The Central Reserve Police Force's (CRPF) timely intervention during a "terror attack" in Manipur's Jiribam district prevented the loss of several lives, Chief Minister N Biren Singh told NDTV on Thursday. Mr Singh said "10 Kuki terrorists" tried to enter a relief camp in Jiribam's Borobekra where 115 internally displaced people were living, but the CRPF foiled their plan. All the 10 were shot dead in a gunfight with the central forces on November 11 in Borobekra, a village on the interstate border with Assam. One CRPF soldier was injured. "If the CRPF was not deployed, the lives of many civilians would have been lost. The Kuki terrorists came with rocket launchers, AK 47, and many sophisticated weapons. They attacked the (police) camp , and killed two people on the spot," Mr Singh told NDTV. "They were trying to enter Borobekra relief camp where 115 Meitei civilians were living. But due to the timely intervention by the CRPF, the lives were saved. Otherwise that scenario could have been different. It's very unfortunate that eight innocent people were killed. The two died in the attack, and six including three small children were kidnapped and mercilessly killed. It is an intolerable crime," the Chief Minister said. Civil society groups and leaders of the Kuki tribes have claimed the 10 men were "village volunteers". The police have, however, called them "militants" and showed assault rifles and a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launcher as recovered from them. A bullet-ridden vehicle of the security forces was shown as one of the targets of the "militants". At least two dozen suspected Kuki militants had split into two groups before launching the attack in Borobekra, police sources had told NDTV. While one group took six Meitei hostages, the other group of 10 men vandalised and set fire to houses, and killed two senior citizens from the Meitei community. These 10 were later shot dead in the encounter with the CRPF, police sources have said. The six hostages were from the same family - a woman, her infant child, her two-year-old son, her mother, her sister and her sister's daughter - all were killed in captivity by suspected Kuki militants. Their bodies were dumped into a river . Days before the Borobekra attack, a mother of three from the Hmar tribe was allegedly raped and killed by suspected Meitei militants during a night attack on a village in Jiribam. Mr Singh said the Manipur cabinet's resolution was placed "after a lot of thought", adding the Centre sent more forces to catch the "militants". "You can't deal with Kuki militants without the forces. The operations have already started . This was the demand," he added. The Manipur cabinet has sought to declare the militants involved in the Jiribam terror attack of taking hostages and killing them as an unlawful organisation, or a terror group. He expressed confidence that the Centre would look into the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, or AFSPA, by keeping in mind the "pulse of the people of Manipur" and will surely do something about it. The AFSPA, which gives sweeping powers to the security forces to operate in "disturbed areas" without fear of court proceedings, was reimposed in six police station areas of Manipur's valley region. Protests had also broken out in the valley areas when the partially decomposed bodies of the six hostages were found. The Chief Minister told NDTV that vandalism that happened during the protests was carried out by vested interests and rivals. "The people came out to protest in shock after hearing about the killings of the six innocent women and children. They were simply rallying and appealing to the government and MLAs, not involved in the violence. The arsonists stole many things from the houses they targeted. It was not the public. They were peacefully protesting, rallying. The troublemakers were the defeated group, politically desperate group, politically motivated gang, who looted and attacked homes. No one from the public attacked the MLAs' houses. The public was in the bazaar, protesting," Mr Singh said in the state capital Imphal. The Chief Minister said that in one MLA's house, some 600 people came and spoke to him, and after agreeing to their demands of bringing justice in the Jiribam terror attack case, the group of people left. "Another group of 200 or so people came. These were the ones who created trouble. We have identified them. There is video evidence. Most wore masks, but we know them. They have stolen gold, cash, even eight paddy bags from an MLA's house. What's all this?" Mr Singh said. On the much controversial War on Drugs campaign, the Chief Minister said at least 500 acres of poppy cultivation has been detected in Kangpokpi district, which sprang up fast as the security forces are tied up with other priority tasks. "Due to the present crisis, security has been tied up in some areas and cannot go out. Taking advantage of this, six villages in Kangpokpi are cultivating a huge amount of illegal poppy. Earlier, the forces used to go in the morning and evening to destroy illegal poppy cultivation. At least 500 acres are being cultivated," Mr Singh told NDTV. "We have asked the Chief Secretary to send forces to destroy the poppy farms in Kangpokpi before they can be harvested. They want to destroy the youth of Manipur by making them addicted to drugs, they want to harm India. They are using many strategies to invade India," he said. The Kuki tribes have often criticised Mr Singh for allegedly singling out the community and branding them as a people who encourage drug trafficking, even though many members of other communities have been arrested in narcotics cases. To bring peace in Manipur, Mr Singh said, the Centre had called both sides and started talks. "From the state government's side, we sent MLAs, leaders to Guwahati, Kolkata, Delhi for talks. Political dialogue, negotiations, interactions, these are the things that will help bring peace," he said. He faulted the media for allegedly not reporting the whole picture from Manipur, where he said trouble is confined to two-three districts, and not the entire state where people from different communities are living together in peace. "Differences between communities have been there for a long time. After my government came, I launched the go-to-hills campaign, go-to-village, meet with people from different communities, bring them together, we honoured every community, and constructed a museum of everyone's culture and traditions," the Chief Minister said. "The Sangai ethnic park has the model of houses of every tribe to show oneness... we are all proud Indians, we are all proud Manipuris, and almost succeeded except for the present scenario with this one community. But other communities are living together. Go to Imphal and see. There are churches, temples, masjids. Trouble is happening only in one-two districts, not the whole Manipur. The national media needs to be aware of all this," he said. When violence broke out in May 2023, temples were razed and set on fire in many hill areas, while churches in the valley areas also suffered the same fate. To a question about the National People's Party (NPP) withdrawing support to his government, Mr Singh told NDTV he is not worried. "The Congress has only five leaders. They won only five seats after 15 years... There's nothing to worry about. Whether the NPP withdraws or not, there is enough of a majority. Those who want to give an excuse at a time when the state is going through hardships, let them be. For example, if a lifeguard runs away when an incident is about to happen, let him run away. I am here to save everyone," he said. There are many villages of the Kuki tribes in the hills surrounding the Meitei-dominated valley. The clashes between the Meitei community and the nearly two dozen tribes known as Kukis - a term given by the British in colonial times - who are dominant in some hill areas of Manipur, has killed over 220 people and internally displaced nearly 50,000. The general category Meiteis want to be included under the Scheduled Tribes category, while the Kukis who share ethnic ties with people in neighbouring Myanmar's Chin State and Mizoram want a separate administration carved out of Manipur, citing discrimination and unequal share of resources and power with the Meiteis.

Get picks now .In a political moment where voters across the globe are in the mood for change, Premier David Eby’s government, after days of dramatic recounts, was returned to office for a second mandate. Recognizing these are challenging times for incumbents, the premier was quick to announce the reorganization of the government he inherited from former premier John Horgan just two years earlier. Major changes were made to both the organizational structure of the natural resource ministries and the people in charge of it. The new ministry of energy and climate solutions is a smart move, where accountability for all things energy and climate rests with Minister Adrian Dix, a seasoned political veteran with a reputation for getting things done. The new ministry reflects the reality that the world now invests almost twice as much in clean energy as it does in fossil fuels. In 2024, global energy investment is set to exceed US$3 trillion, with US$2 trillion going to clean energy technologies and infrastructure. Spending on renewable power, grids and storage is now higher than total spending on oil, gas and coal, with clean energy employment surpassing that of fossil fuels globally in 2021. Creating a combined energy and climate ministry reflects an important fact: climate and energy are two sides of the same coin. Similarly, the creation of the new ministry of mines and critical minerals acknowledges the province’s mineral wealth and ability to both mine and process these materials in B.C. Helping meet clean-energy-driven demand for critical minerals is a major economic opportunity for the province. Indeed, the global battery market is set to triple in size from US$120 billion in 2023 to US$330 billion in 2030. What’s yet to come, however, are the minister’s mandate letters that will spell out the government’s detailed agenda. It will be tempting to look south of the border at the incoming Trump administration and the political winds of change blowing here in Canada as indicators of where the global economy is headed. But the Eby government must not lose sight of the global picture, where countries around the world are accelerating the deployment of clean energy and technologies. In fact, even the incoming Trump administration is being lobbied by the automotive and fossil fuel industries to keep the U.S. in the Paris Climate Agreement and maintain U.S. President Joe Biden’s clean energy tax credits and EV incentives. Combine this pressure with state-led leadership from California and others, and it’s unclear whether “drill, baby, drill” will indeed become the U.S.’s prevailing economic narrative. Fortunately, the Eby government took some bold first steps in its previous mandate to align B.C.’s economy with this new reality. During his two years as premier, Eby has taken the province’s clean energy future seriously, implementing a number of important changes , such as increasing energy infrastructure investments and providing a credible vision for how the province can best leverage its clean energy advantages. What’s required now is largely the implementation of Eby’s first-term commitments, including the development of an oil and gas emissions cap and support for household clean technologies that help drive down both home energy bills and emissions (often adding cooling to homes that now need it). The new government also needs an action plan to implement the government’s energy strategy, Powering Our Future , to ensure B.C. has sufficient clean electricity for the years ahead. It should prioritize streamlining permitting and regulatory processes for clean energy projects while advancing Indigenous reconciliation and environmental protection. B.C. is poised to prosper. The province’s clean technology sector — currently home to seven of the world’s 100 most promising cleantech firms — will be in high demand as the global market for solar, wind, EVs, batteries, electrolysers and heat pumps is set to rise from US$700 billion in 2023 to more than US$2 trillion by 2035, which is close to the value of the world’s crude oil market in recent years. This, again, is where the world is headed even without further speeding up the clean energy transition. What’s more, analysis from Clean Energy Canada shows that, in a world where Canada and B.C. remain on track to net zero by 2050, over 400,000 clean energy jobs would be created in the province, up from some 83,000 in 2025, representing an annual growth rate of six per cent. Eby has set the province on a path to an affordable, prosperous future, but the journey has only just started. Developments south of the border provide an opportunity for B.C. to step up and fully align its economy with where the global market is headed. Wosk Centre for Dialogue. The Gophers have been working on a couple trick plays during closed practices in recent weeks. Unveiled Saturday, one worked to huge success and one didn’t pan out in a 26-25 loss to No. 4 Penn State. ADVERTISEMENT They busted out a double-reverse pass that resulted in a 21-yard touchdown from Max Brosmer to a wide open Jameson Geers in the first half to take a 17-10 lead at Huntington Bank Stadium. Then in the fourth quarter, the U called a throwback pass from Brosmer to left tackle Aireontae Ersery on second and goal from the 8-yard line. Brosmer intentionally threw it incomplete because Penn State’s All-America candidate, defensive end Abdul Carter, was waiting to make a tackle on the U’s athletic-but-massive lineman. “The reverse pass worked, so it’s a good call,” coach P.J. Fleck said postgame. “We were in the perfect defense for (the throwback pass). We practiced it all week. The only thing that they showed ... was pop (Carter) out. If he doesn’t pop out, there is nobody there. “It just didn’t come together,” Fleck continued. “It came together in practice. I love the call. I loved the look that we put it into. I would call it all over again based on the look that we had.” ADVERTISEMENT Brosmer shared that players were comfortable with the throwback call until Carter spoiled it. “Rather than taking a negative spot (by trying to complete it), we just went onto the next play,” Brosmer said. After the second trick play didn’t work, Brosmer’s third-down pass to Elijah Spencer fell incomplete and the U opted to kick a 26-yard field goal to make it 26-25 with five minutes left. “Kicking the field goal is the smart decision,” Fleck said. Investor Warren Buffett renewed his Thanksgiving tradition of giving by announcing plans Monday to hand more than $1.1 billion of Berkshire Hathaway stock to four of his family's foundations, and he offered new details about who will be handing out the rest of his fortune after his death. Buffett has said previously that his three kids will distribute his remaining $147.4 billion fortune in the 10 years after his death, but now he has also designated successors for them because it's possible that Buffett's children could die before giving it all away. He didn't identify the successors, but said his kids all know them and agree they would be good choices. “Father time always wins. But he can be fickle – indeed unfair and even cruel – sometimes ending life at birth or soon thereafter while, at other times, waiting a century or so before paying a visit,” the 94-year-old Buffett said in a letter to his fellow shareholders. “To date, I’ve been very lucky, but, before long, he will get around to me. There is, however, a downside to my good fortune in avoiding his notice. The expected life span of my children has materially diminished since the 2006 pledge. They are now 71, 69 and 66.” Buffett said he still has no interest in creating dynastic wealth in his family — a view shared by his first and current wives. He acknowledged giving Howard, Peter and Susie millions over the years, but he has long said he believes “hugely wealthy parents should leave their children enough so they can do anything but not enough that they can do nothing.” The secret to building up such massive wealth over time has been the power of compounding interest and the steady growth of the Berkshire conglomerate Buffett leads through acquisitions and smart investments like buying billions of dollars of Apple shares as iPhone sales continued to drive growth in that company. Buffett never sold any of his Berkshire stock over the years and also resisted the trappings of wealth and never indulged in much — preferring instead to continue living in the same Omaha home he'd bought decades earlier and drive sensible luxury sedans about 20 blocks to work each day. “As a family, we have had everything we needed or simply liked, but we have not sought enjoyment from the fact that others craved what we had,” he said. If Buffett and his first wife had never given away any of their Berkshire shares, the family's fortune would be worth nearly $364 billion — easily making him the world's richest man — but Buffett said he had no regrets about his giving over the years. The family's giving began in earnest with the distribution of Susan Buffett's $3 billion estate after her death in 2004, but really took off when Warren Buffett announced plans in 2006 to make annual gifts to the foundations run by his kids along with the one he and his wife started, as well as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Warren Buffett's giving to date has favored the Gates Foundation with $55 billion in stock because his friend Bill Gates already had his foundation set up and could handle huge gifts when Buffett started giving away his fortune. But Buffett has said his kids now have enough experience in philanthropy to handle the task and he plans to cut off his Gates Foundation donations after his death. Buffett always makes his main annual gifts to all five foundations every summer, but for several years now he has been giving additional Berkshire shares to his family's foundations at Thanksgiving. Buffett reiterated Monday his advice to every parent to allow their families to read their will while they are still alive — like he has done — to make sure they have a chance to explain their decisions about how to distribute their belongings and answer their children's questions. Buffett said he and his longtime investing partner Charlie Munger, who died a year ago, “saw many families driven apart after the posthumous dictates of the will left beneficiaries confused and sometimes angry.” Today, Buffett continues to lead Berkshire Hathaway as chairman and CEO and has no plans to retire although he has handed over most of the day-to-day managing duties for the conglomerates dozens of companies to others. That allows him to focus on his favorite activity of deciding where to invest Berkshire's billions. One of Buffett's deputies who oversees all the noninsurance companies now, Greg Abel, is set to take over as CEO after Buffett's death.

Rumeysa Gelgi, who stands 215.16 centimeters (7 feet 0.7 inches) tall, and Jyoti Amge, who measures just 62.8 centimeters (2 feet 0.7 inches), met at the Savoy Hotel, according to a statement from Guinness World Records (GWR) on Wednesday. The height difference between the two women might be a massive 152.36 centimeters (5 feet), but the pair reportedly got on famously. "We do have things in common. We both love make-up, self-care, jewelry and doing our nails," said Gelgi in the statement. "It was difficult for us to make eye contact at times due to our height difference, but it was great," she added. Amge added that she was "so happy" to meet her fellow record holder. Gelgi, a web designer from Turkey, was confirmed as the tallest woman living in 2021. Her height is due to an extremely rare condition called Weaver syndrome. She was only the 27th person in the world to be diagnosed with the syndrome, according to GWR. Gelgi, 27, also holds the records for largest hands on a woman at 24.93 centimeters (9.81 inches); the longest back on a living person (female) at 59.90 centimeters (23.58 inches); and the longest ears on a person (female) at an average size of 9.58 centimeters (3.77 inches). Gelgi has also been featured in a GWR documentary named "Rumeysa: Walking Tall," which follows her on a journey across the U.S., meeting fellow record holders. Amge, an actress and media personality born in India, has a bone growth disorder named achondroplasia that affects the arms and legs. The disorder occurs early in a fetus' development in the womb and affects the cartilage tissue that should become a child's arms and legs. Despite her small stature, she is a big presence on social media and has also appeared on the U.S. television series "American Horror Story: Freak Show" in the role of Ma Petite. This means she is officially the shortest actress ever, GWR said. Amge has also appeared on the Italian TV show "Lo Show Dei Record" on various occasions. GWR editor-in-chief Craig Glenday met with the pair in London and said that the records are about "celebrating differences." "By bringing together these two amazing, iconic women, they can share their perspectives on life with each other and, also, with us," said Glenday in the statement. Both Gelgi and Amge have been named GWR ICONS, a new category introduced for the book's 2025 edition.

3 ace pizza
3 ace pizza It’s always a historic occasion when an Australian makes it to Formula 1, and Jack Doohan’s fast-tracked debut will be no exception. Doohan, 21 years old, will be the 19th Australian to enter a grand prix and 16th to start a race. The Gold Coast native will also be Australia’s first grand prix driver to hail from Queensland. The son of 500cc motorcycle world champion Mick Doohan, he’s worked hard to crack the premier class in four-wheel motorsport. That effort will culminate in him hitting the track on Friday for first practice in a car with his name on the side of it. Every F1 qualifying session and race LIVE in 4K on Kayo. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer. But getting to F1 is one thing. Staying there is another challenge entirely. Doohan will have little time to soak up his achievement. The hard work starts now. THE OPPORTUNITY Remarkably Doohan will be the fourth driver to be drafted in mid-season this year, following in the footsteps of Oliver Bearman at Ferrari and Haas, Franco Colapinto at Williams and Liam Lawson at RB. His will arguably be the most surprising debut of the lot, coming with the unexpected departure of Esteban Ocon with one round remaining. Ocon was already set to depart Alpine at the end of the year after a rollercoaster partnership with the French team. His highs have been outstanding. Ocon has scored the Renault-owned team’s two best results since its return to F1 in 2016 — victory at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix and second place in Sao Paulo last month. But his lows have been damaging. He had several on-track altercations with Fernando Alonso over their two seasons together, and he inevitably came to blows with childhood rival Pierre Gasly too. The nadir was this year’s Monaco Grand Prix, where Ocon crashed into his teammate at Portier on the first lap while both were running in the points. He took himself out of the race, but mercifully an ensuing red flag allowed Gasly to restart back in the top 10, from where he scored a point. Then team principal Bruno Famin was so incensed he appeared prepared to sack him on the spot, though he was eventually talked down. PIT TALK PODCAST: McLaren and Ferrari will take the constructors championship down to the first this weekend in Abu Dhabi after a stalemate in Qatar. Meanwhile, at Alpine, Jack Doohan is preparing to make his shock F1 debut in place of the ousted Esteban Ocon ahead of his first full-time season in 2025. But it was clear the relationship was on the rocks. Team and driver announced they wouldn’t be renewing ties into 2025, and Ocon sealed a deal with Haas. The end of that relationship has now been hastened by several factors. One is Ocon’s underperformance in the second half of the season. He’s been qualifying more than a quarter of a second slower the Gasly since the break, equating to around three places on the grid, and he’s scored points just once since the mid-season break, that being his excellent second place in Brazil. It’s a situation that’s bred suspicion, and Ocon has several times hinted — without saying outright — that his underperformance is due to the team, either accidentally or wilfully, given the suddenness and sharpness of his downturn. The second is his request to join Haas in a post-season test. Haas is Alpine’s chief rival for sixth in the championship, a battle that could be worth as much as $15 million. Alpine owes it no favours. With Doohan obviously available to step up immediately, Alpine was motivated to start its next chapter early. Ocon was given a proposition: race in Abu Dhabi and forgo the test or quit the team and get a head start at Haas. It wasn’t a pleasant situation, particularly as it seems to have been put to him just hours before the start of the race in Qatar, according to Autosport . “This is not how I wanted it to end,” he wrote on social media. But Ocon was also motivated to start the next chapter of his career and quit the team. Doohan got his chance. THE THREAT That might be all there is to the story — Alpine wanting to get its protégé a head start for 2025 when it hopes there’ll be more to fight for with a more consistently competitive car. But there are rumours about Alpine’s driver management plans that have refused to fade away. In recent months there have been reports that Alpine has taken an interest in Williams rookie Franco Colapinto. Colapinto’s sudden debut was spectacular. Often a close match for teammate Alex Albon and scoring points in just his second race — his predecessor, Logan Sargeant, hadn’t scored all year — the Argentine immediately turned heads in the paddock. What’s more, because Williams had already signed Carlos Sainz for 2025 — for whom Alpine was also bidding — Colapinto has no drive for next season. Red Bull also reportedly made a play for the 21-year-old but wanted to buy him outright, for which Williams was rumoured to have demanded US$20 million (A$31 million). Alpine, however, is said to have been prepared to take him on loan. With Gasly already signed up on a long-term deal, Doohan was in the gun. But Colapinto’s form has since waned. He wasn’t the only driver to crash heavily in the treacherous wet of Brazil, but his qualifying smash in Las Vegas was a totally unforced error, taking off some of his sheen. An anonymous weekend in Qatar saw Red Bull withdraw its interest, but while Alpine’s enthusiasm is also said to have cooled, it reportedly hasn’t ruled him out entirely. That’s not least because, along with obvious speed, Colapinto also brings with him considerable sponsorship, especially with the prospect of a potential Argentine Grand Prix to follow should he establish himself in the sport. It’s music to the ears of a team that announced this year it would shutter its decades-old engine department to save money. And so Doohan’s early promotion takes on a different meaning. Perhaps it’s not simply a head start. It could also be an evaluation. Alpine management has long talked up Doohan’s prospects as a Formula 1 driver, having been impressed by his speed, commitment and professionalism. But Alpine management has been in a state of upheaval for more than a year now, and while Doohan was confirmed for 2025 only a few months ago, Colapinto wasn’t an option then. And before you wonder whether Alpine could be so ruthless with one of its own juniors before he’s barely had a chance to drive, remember that Ocon is the only race winner and the longest tenured driver in the team’s modern history and still got the flick without the dignity of a farewell race. Sentiment doesn’t come into it. THE CHALLENGE So what will it take for Doohan to pass his first test? While no-one will expect him to match Gasly this weekend, he won’t be allowed too much slack either. He won’t be measured against just his teammate; he’ll also be compared to the other rookie debutants this year. Bearman scored points for seventh in his sudden call-up for Ferrari halfway through the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix weekend at one of the sport’s most challenging tracks. Colapinto’s success as a mid-season debutant is clear, the Argentine demonstrating both speed and racecraft. Lawson, notwithstanding his five grands prix last year, has also done extremely well, finishing ninth in his comeback race in the United States despite starting from the back of the grid with an engine penalty. He’s been a match for teammate Yuki Tsunoda. “I think the problem is you’ve got the benchmark that Bearman set [at Jeddah], which was phenomenal,” Alpine team principal Oliver Oakes said, per Autosport . “And I mean this in a nice way, as he’s hugely talented, but you had Kimi [Antonelli, Mercedes’s reserve driver] with the sort of pressure in Monza [where he crashed in FP1]. “I think at the end of the day Jack’s just got to take it as he finds it. I think he’s professional enough to handle it. “I think as well, once you ease into the weekend, FP1, FP2, you can build up to it as well.” He’ll also carry with him the added pressure of knowing Alpine is hoping to cement sixth in the constructors championship, a battle it leads by five points over Haas and by 13 points over RB. That said, Ocon’s car has finished just once in the points since the end of July, so it would be hard to argue a non-scoring finish by the Australian would make the switch a mistake. Nonetheless, he’ll need to show by the end of the weekend that he’s not out of his depth. He needs to perform capably enough that Colapinto would look like nothing more than a needlessly messy sideways move at best. If he can hold his seat to next year — which, even amid these rumours, is surely highly likely — the threat will rapidly recede. Not only will he be able to quickly close the experience gap to Colapinto, but he’ll be the only one of the two on the grid, absorbing all the spotlight while Colapinto battles for relevance from the sidelines. If you’re only as good as your last race, Doohan’s advantage will be that he’s the only one racing. THE PREPARATION Doohan will arrive in Formula 1 well prepared to take on the sudden challenge, having been an active and engaged Alpine reserve driver since 2022, after finishing a closer runner-up in the 2021 Formula 3 championship. He was then in with a shout for the 2022 F2 crown before a late-season collapse, much of which was owed to an atrocious run of luck. He was subsequently declared a favourite for the 2023 championship, but an undetected cracked chassis for the first five rounds killed his chances — though even then he finished third and only 35 points off the lead, scoring the most points of any driver in the final five rounds. He took a gamble at the end of last year to forgo a racing program, turning down chances to race in different categories to instead fully devote himself to Alpine. He’s been embedded in the team every weekend. For the European rounds he’s also been on the simulator on Friday night, working on a testing program in parallel with the practice sessions, and then flying to the track in time for track action on Saturday. His sim work was considered instrumental to the team’s strong weekend in Monaco earlier in the year and has underpinned the development program that eventually turned the car good late this year. Between races he’s undertaken a private testing program comprising 5000 kilometres in previous-spec Alpine cars to keep him sharp and fit, complementing the two FP1 sessions he’s had this year in Canada and Great Britain as well as the four practice appearances over the past two seasons. “I think the program has been, I dare say, well planned for him,” Oakes said. “I think although the team doesn’t get much credit from the [Oscar] Piastri situation, they obviously are pretty good with young drivers and preparing them. “And I think Jack’s been on that same path. He’s been with me quite a bit in the garage. “He listens to the intercom with me, and Flav [Briatore, executive adviser], giving us his two pennies as well, so I’m sure he’s ready for it.” What he hasn’t done in the last 12 months, however, is feel the pressure of a qualifying lap or the tension of a race start. He hasn’t had to nail a racing pit stop or manage a tyre stint while also competing with other cars. These are the things that could trip him up this weekend, and these are the things to which he must show himself capable of quickly reacclimatising. THE RECORD Along with the Hungaroring and Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi was one of Doohan’s strongest tracks during his Formula 2 years. His first visit in 2021 was just his second race in F2. He qualified an astounding second and just 0.213 seconds slower than pole-getter Oscar Piastri, who shortly afterwards won the championship. He scored points in the second sprint, and though he crashed out of the feature race, a statement had been made. On his return in 2022 he started fifth for the feature race and was setting up for a grandstand victory on the alternative strategy when his front-left wheel fell off, forcing him into retirement. But there would be no stopping him on his final visit, in 2023. He qualified on pole, rose from 10th to sixth in the reverse-grid sprint race and then converted for an emphatic victory in the Sunday feature, promoting him to third in the championship. He should have no trouble finding his way around this circuit, in other words. Alpine, on the other hand, has a less impressive history at the traditional season-closing race. Since returning to the sport in 2016 the French team has collected just seven scoring finishes across either car in Abu Dhabi. Only twice has it got both cars into the points, in 2020 and in 2021. It’s never finished better than sixth, having done so twice, in 2017 and 2018. Last year both drivers failed to score and finished more than a minute off the lead. But Alpine is on the up this season and has a reasonable chance of scoring points. Its average gap to pole over the last five races places it at the head of the midfield, coinciding with what’s turned out to be a season-changing upgrade brought to the United States Grand Prix. Gasly has cracked Q3 three times since then, with an average qualifying result of 8.8. The team has also scored 46 of its 59 points since bringing the upgrade, albeit its double podium in Brazil contributed 35 of those. Scoring points is a tall ask for the Doohan at his first grand prix, when blowing off the cobwebs after a year off the grid will be the priority. But if he’s to pull out a big result, he may have arrived in just the right place at exactly the right time.

The president-elect also survived two assassination attempts . A bullet grazed his ear and killed a rallygoer during the first assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania. Trump is the first president to win another term after losing his reelection bid since Grover Cleveland in 1892. He also is the oldest person to assume the presidency, and the first person convicted of a felony to win the job. Trump's victory also is notable because of the political realignment he has brought. He made gains with younger voters and Hispanic voters . Trump is expected to celebrate the honor by ringing the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange Thursday and unveiling the magazine cover, Politico reported citing three sources. Trump also was named Person of the Year in 2016 after winning his first White House bid. Time did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the 2024 award. Time unveiled the Person of the Year short list earlier this week. It includes Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris, Kate Middleton, Elon Musk and Benjamin Netanyahu. Time named professional basketball player Caitlin Clark Athlete of the Year on Tuesday. Pop star Taylor Swift was named Person of the Year in 2023.

Cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin will help drive modernisation of Australia’s financial system, Treasurer Jim Chalmers has declared while revealing the re-election of Donald Trump has already forced a rethink of the emerging sector’s importance. Chalmers said while there were legitimate concerns such as the use of crypto by criminal elements, the possible advantages from the creation of new investment opportunities should not be curtailed by overzealous regulation. Cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin have attracted even more interest since the re-election of Donald Trump. Credit: Bloomberg Cryptocurrencies, which encompass digital currencies that are effectively policed by investors rather than authorities such as governments or central banks, were already one of the world’s fastest-growing investment opportunities before Trump’s election victory in November. Trump has promised to be a “crypto president” by loosening regulation around products, creating a stockpile of bitcoin – the value of which has surged by a third since November – and making it easier for crypto investors to gain access to traditional banking systems. In Australia, broad investment in cryptocurrencies is still well short of traditional sectors such as equities and property, but there is growing interest, particularly among younger people. Chalmers said he believed crypto, and the infrastructure surrounding it, could be a key feature of an improved financial system. “I think crypto has a role to play, and it’s part of modernising and innovating in our financial system,” he said. “We need to make sure there are appropriate protections and guard-rails, but we need to make sure we don’t overdo that and stomp on part of the industry which, I think, will be important in the industry.” Last month, RBA governor Michele Bullock, who previously headed up the bank’s payments arm, was less bullish than Chalmers about cryptocurrency and said she didn’t see a role for it in the economy. “I don’t really see a role for it in, certainly in the Australian economy or payments system,” she said. Governments, central banks and policymakers around the world are watching Trump’s policy agenda with particular interest, given he has promised to impose wide-scale tariffs , deport millions of undocumented workers and possibly intervene in official interest rate settings . Chalmers said Trump’s approach to crypto was also uppermost in the government’s mind. “Of the list of changes in policy emphasis we expect from the incoming Trump administration, this is one of the ones we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about,” he said. “We think about trade and tariffs, we think about financial regulation, we think about deregulation more broadly. We think about the energy transformation, and we think about crypto.” The government is planning to introduce legislation next year that would create licensing arrangements for businesses that offer digital assets such as crypto and stablecoin – a type of cryptocurrency pegged to the value of another currency or commodity. The licensing is in part due to growing crypto-related scams that were estimated last year to have cost Australians about $180 million in losses. AUSTRAC this month warned that it believed specialist crypto ATMs were being used by criminal organisations in South-East Asia to launder the money of Australian-based criminals. Treasurer Jim Chalmers believes cryptocurrencies will drive modernisation and innovation across the nation’s financial system. Credit: Alex Ellinghausen Chalmers said regulations around crypto had to balance security issues for potential investors in the asset class against being overly onerous. “Our interest here is to recognise it’s legitimate, it’s important, it’s growing,” he said. “We need to make sure that people are protected, but we don’t want to overdo it in a way that stifles an industry we believe in. “Obviously, the multinational crime element of it is something people are focused on with good reason, but I think we would be doing ourselves a disservice if we overfocused on the downside and didn’t sufficiently focus on the upside.” One of the downsides is the use of crypto by criminals attracted to the way its underlying technology makes it difficult to track major financial transactions. In some cases, criminals have demanded ransom payments in crypto. This masthead can also reveal that cryptocurrency assets are increasingly being seized by the Australian Federal Police as part of their inquiries. Between July and November this year, the AFP had collected more than $20 million worth of crypto. Over the same period, more than $28 million in cash was seized by the AFP’s criminal asset confiscation taskforce. All seized cash goes into an account used for community safety programs. The AFP has collected $62 million in crypto since the middle of 2019. The value of that crypto may be growing. Once the AFP collects it, the agency does not track the ongoing value of the crypto (which is managed by the Australian Financial Security Authority). Since July 1 this year, the value of bitcoin has soared from $US63,352 to $US97,742. As recently as December 17, bitcoin had reached $US106,470. By WYATTE GRANTHAM-PHILIPS NEW YORK (AP) — Sneaking a little ahead of line to get on that plane faster? American Airlines might stop you . In an apparent effort to reduce the headaches caused by airport line cutting, American has rolled out boarding technology that alerts gate agents with an audible sound if a passenger tries to scan a ticket ahead of their assigned group. This new software won’t accept a boarding pass before the group it’s assigned to is called, so customers who get to the gate prematurely will be asked to go back and wait their turn. As of Wednesday, the airline announced, the technology is now being used in more than 100 U.S. airports that American flies out of. The official expansion arrives after successful tests in three of these locations — Albuquerque International Sunport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Tucson International Airport. The initial response from customers and American employees “has exceeded our expectations,” Julie Rath, American’s senior vice president of airport operations, reservations and service recovery, said in a statement. She added that the airline is “thrilled” to have the technology up and running ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday . American got lots of attention when it unveiled its gate-control testing last month. Analysts say that isn’t surprising. It’s no secret that line cutting in airports hits a nerve. Whether intentional or not, just about every air traveler has witnessed it, noted Henry Harteveldt, an airline industry analyst with Atmosphere Research Group. It can add to frustrations in what can already be a tense environment, with particular anxiety around passengers wanting to sit together or rushing for some overhead bin space. Harteveldt doesn’t see American’s recent move as “shaming” customers who cut the line. “What it is intended to do is bring order out of chaos,” he said. “And I hope it will defuse any potential flare ups of anger (from) people who simply think they’re entitled to board out of turn .... It’s just not fair.” Harteveldt added that he thinks this change will enhance the experiences of both customers and gate agents. Others say more time will tell. Seth Miller, editor and founder of air travel experience analysis site PaxEx.aero, said he can see the benefits of more orderly and universal gate-control enforcement, particularly for airlines. But he said he isn’t “100% convinced this is perfect for passengers” just yet. Families, for example, might be booked on several different reservations across more than one group, he said. Airlines typically have workarounds for that, and American noted Wednesday that customers traveling with a companion in an earlier group can simply have a gate agent “override the alert” to continue boarding. Still, Miller said, “you have to go through the extra hoops.” And a difficult customer still might choose to hold up the line and argue when they’re not allowed to board, he added. But Harteveldt said he was happy to learn that American’s alert is “not a bellowing sound that can be heard throughout the terminal,” or accompanied by your name read over a loudspeaker, noting that this is important to avoid feelings of shame. Expanding this technology just a week before peak Thanksgiving travel could be “both good and bad,” Harteveldt adds. On one hand, the tech could help significantly improve the boarding process during such a busy time, he said, but airport employees might also have appreciated more time to prepare. Both Miller and Harteveldt said they wouldn’t be surprised if other carriers soon follow American’s lead. Headaches over airport line cutting are far from new. While maybe not to the extent of American’s new tech, Miller noted he’s seen gate agents from other airlines ask people to leave a line and wait for their group. Harteveldt added that he’s been to some airports in Asia and Europe with “sliding doors” that ensure passengers are in the right group before boarding a plane. The more than 100 airports that American is now using its gate-control technology in are all spoke, or non-hub, locations — including Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The airline says it expects to further expand to its hubs and other airports in the coming months.5 wild

AROUND 445 former members of the communist terrorist organization (CTG) and their supporters completed the three-day peace sustainment forum (PSF), marking a historic milestone toward peace and development in Marilog District. The 27th Infantry Battalion organized the forum, which took place at Marilog Central Elementary School from November 15 to 17, 2024, with assistance from the municipal authorities. The PSF brought together 35 former rebels (FR), 67 Militiang Bayan (MB), and 343 members of underground mass organizations (UGMO) from 12 Marilog barangays. According to Capt. Eddie Rey Navales, the 27th IB's civil-military operation officer, the event was a major turning point because these people had returned to the folds of the government, leaving the CPP/NPA/NDF and condemned its philosophy. Navales also explained that the program highlighted the NPA's exploitation strategies and CTG indoctrination. The participants also gained knowledge about government services and programs that disproved the NPA’s claims. As a signal of the attendees' rejection of the NPA's deceit, the PSF ended with a peace demonstration and the symbolic burning of the NPA flag. A former NPA member highlighted the NPA’s decades of deception as she described her horrific experiences under the terrorist group. Meanwhile, 1003rd Deputy Brigade commander, Col. Michael Banua, highlighted the PSF's effectiveness as a psychological deterrent to terrorist recruitment and underlined its importance as a critical step towards community peace and prosperity. He then urged all the participants to defend and support the government's efforts to bring about peace. The PSF was a joint effort of the City Government of Davao, the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP)-Davao, the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR)-Davao, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-Davao, Police Station 12, PNP-Davao, Davao City Police Office, City Social Welfare Development Office, City Health Office, Department of Education-Davao City Division, and Laquihon Agro-Environmental Consultancy Services as they demonstrated the "whole-of-nation approach" to putting an end to local insurgency and armed struggle by providing lectures, pledging assistance, and proposing ways to enhance living conditions. LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Allowing two kickoff return touchdowns and missing an extra point all in the final few minutes added up to the Washington Commanders losing a third consecutive game in excruciating fashion. The underlying reason for this slide continuing was a problem long before that. An offense led by dynamic rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels that was among the NFL's best for a long stretch of the season put up just nine points and 169 yards for the first three-plus quarters against Dallas before falling behind 20-9 and teeing off on the Cowboys' conservative defense. “We just couldn’t really get it going,” said receiver Terry McLaurin , whose lengthy touchdown with 21 seconds left masked that he had just three catches for 16 yards through three quarters. “We’ve got to find a way to start faster and sustain drives, and that’s everybody: the whole coaching staff and the offensive players just going out there and figuring out ways that we can stay on the field.” This is not a new problem for Washington, which had a season-low 242 yards in a Nov. 10 home loss to Pittsburgh and 264 yards four days later in a defeat at Philadelphia. Since returning from a rib injury that knocked him out of a game last month, Daniels has completed just under 61% of his passes, after 75.6% over his first seven professional starts. Daniels and coach Dan Quinn have insisted this isn't about injury. The coaching staff blamed a lack of adequate practice time, but a full week of it before facing the Cowboys did not solve the problem. It is now fair to wonder if opponents have seen enough film of offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury's system to figure it out. “I think teams and coordinators are going to see what other teams have success against us and try to figure out how they could incorporate that into their scheme," Daniels said after going 12 of 22 for 80 yards passing through three quarters in the Dallas game. "We’ve been in third and longer a lot these past couple games, so that’s kind of where you get into the exotic pressures and stuff like that. We’ve just got to be better on first and second downs and stay ahead of the chains.” Daniels has a point there, and it predates this losing streak. The Commanders have converted just 36% of third-down opportunities (27 for 75) over their past seven games after 52% (31 for 60) in their first five. That challenge doesn't get any easier with Tennessee coming to town Sunday. The Titans, despite being 3-8, have the second-best third-down defense in the league at 31.6%. The defense kept the Commanders in the game against Dallas, allowing just 10 points until the fourth quarter and 20 total before kickoff return touchdowns piled on to the other side of the scoreboard. Even Cooper Rush's 22-yard touchdown pass to Luke Schoonmaker with five minutes left came after a turnover that gave the Cowboys the ball at the Washington 44. The defense spending more than 35 minutes on the field certainly contributed to fatigue as play wore on. The running game that contributed to a 7-2 start has taken a hit, in part because of injuries to top back Brian Robinson Jr. The Commanders got 145 yards on the ground because Daniels had 74 on seven carries, but running backs combined for just 57. Daniels could not say how much the rushing attack stalling has contributed to the offense going stagnant. “You’ve got to be able to run the ball, keep the defense honest,” he said. "We got to execute the plays that are called in, and we didn’t do a good job of doing that.” Linebacker Frankie Luvu keeps making the case to be first-year general manager Adam Peters' best free agent signing. He and fellow offseason addition Bobby Wagner tied for a team-high eight tackles, and Luvu also knocked down three passes against Dallas. Kicker Austin Seibert going wide left on the point-after attempt that would have tied the score with 21 seconds left was his third miss of the game. He also was short on a 51-yard field goal attempt and wide left on an earlier extra point. Seibert, signed a week into the season after Cade York struggled in the opener, made 25 of 27 field goal tries and was 22 of 22 on extra points before injuring his right hip and missing the previous two games. He brushed off his health and the low snap from Tyler Ott while taking responsibility for not connecting. “I made the decision to play, and here we are,” Seibert said. “I just wasn’t striking it well. But it means a lot to me to be here with these guys, so I just want to put my best foot moving forward.” Robinson's sprained ankle and fellow running back Austin Ekeler's concussion from a late kickoff return that led to him being hospitalized for further evaluation are two major immediate concerns. Quinn said Monday that Ekeler and starting right tackle Andrew Wylie are in concussion protocol. It's unclear if Robinson will be available against Tennessee, which could mean Chris Rodriguez Jr. getting elevated from the practice squad to split carries with Jeremy McNichols. The Commanders still have not gotten cornerback Marshon Lattimore into a game since acquiring him at the trade deadline from New Orleans. Lattimore is trying to return from a hamstring injury, and the secondary could use him against Calvin Ridley, who's coming off a 93-yard performance at Houston. 17 — Handoffs to a running back against Dallas, a significant decrease from much of the season before this losing streak. Don't overlook the Titans with the late bye week coming immediately afterward. The Commanders opened as more than a touchdown favorite, but after the results over the weekend, BetMGM Sportsbook had it as 5 1/2 points Monday. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl( MENAFN - Jordan Times) As global attention converges on Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the 16th session of the conference of the Parties to the United Nations convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP16), the urgency to combat land degradation and desertification takes center stage. For the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region, where degraded lands and water scarcity are acute challenges, UNCCD COP16 provides a pivotal platform to showcase transformative solutions that are not only innovative but also essential for sustainable development and climate resilience. Sustainable land restoration and management Land degradation in the NENA region threatens food security, rural livelihoods and ecosystem health. Alarmingly, the proportion of degraded land has risen from 40 per cent to 70 per cent in recent decades, with 5 million hectares lost between 1990 and 2020. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have less than 1 per cent arable land. At UNCCD COP16, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is highlighting the urgent need for sustainable land restoration practices as a pathway to revitalise degraded landscapes, improve soil health and protect biodiversity. Through integrated land management approaches, FAO is enabling countries to address the immediate impacts of land degradation and establish long-term resilience to climate challenges. These efforts underline the role of agrifood systems as central solutions to combat climate crises and achieve land degradation neutrality, aligning with FAO's Regional Priority Framework on greening agriculture, water scarcity and climate action. Enhancing drought resilience and combating desertification Droughts have caused $70 billion in economic losses across Africa over the past 50 years, with increasing severity and frequency impacting NENA's water and food systems. Agriculture consumes 85 per cent of the region's renewable water resources, yet 60 per cent of the water supply originates from outside its borders, complicating resource management. With temperatures projected to rise by up to 4.8°C by the end of the century, these challenges are expected to worsen. At UNCCD COP16, FAO is focusing on strengthening drought resilience by promoting advanced technologies, early warning systems, sustainable water conservation practices, and leveraging digitalisation and artificial intelligence. These tools enable smarter resource management, enhance predictive capabilities for drought monitoring, and support the efficient allocation of water resources. These efforts align with FAO's Regional Initiative on Water Scarcity for the Near East and North Africa, which works to optimize water use efficiency and ensure sustainable water management across the region. Empowering women and youth in land governance A sustainable future for NENA hinges on the inclusion of women and youth in land governance. Systemic inequalities mean that despite their critical roles in agriculture and natural resource management, women own less than 7 per cent of agricultural land in the region and face barriers to accessing resources and decision-making roles. Similarly, youth struggle with limited access to land and financial services, exacerbating their vulnerability to environmental challenges. At UNCCD COP16, FAO highlights its initiatives to empower women and youth by providing them with tools, training and a platform for participation in governance processes. Inclusive governance not only addresses systemic inequalities but also strengthens agrifood systems, ensuring they are resilient, equitable, and better equipped to meet the challenges of land degradation and climate change. Strengthening urban-rural linkages for sustainable food systems Rapid urbanisation is transforming the NENA region, with 73 per cent of its population projected to live in cities by 2050. This demographic shift increases demand for food and natural resources, straining rural agricultural systems and urban infrastructure. At UNCCD COP16, FAO is addressing this challenge by showcasing strategies that strengthen urban-rural linkages by integrating rural producers into urban food systems. These efforts promote access to nutritious food while reducing environmental impacts and fostering sustainable development. Water management: Securing resources for future generations Water scarcity remains one of the most critical challenges in the NENA region. Most NENA countries have less than 1,000 cubic meters of water per capita annually and rely heavily on desalination and groundwater extraction, leading to unsustainable pressure on resources. At UNCCD COP16, FAO is advocating for collaborative solutions to address water scarcity, including water-saving technologies, improved irrigation systems, and integrated resource management. These approaches are essential to sustaining agricultural productivity while safeguarding water resources for future generations. Scaling up innovation, policy, and financing The scale of transformation needed to combat land degradation and desertification requires robust policy frameworks, innovative technologies and substantial financial investment. At UNCCD COP16, FAO is calling for financing mechanisms that prioritise agricultural communities, ensuring resources reach those most affected by environmental challenges. A key initiative highlighted at COP16 is the Regional Investment Framework for Integrated Development and Ecosystem Restoration Solutions in the Near East and North Africa. This framework promotes integrated approaches to land restoration, uniting public and private sector investments to support large-scale, sustainable projects that enhance food security, promote greening agriculture, improve livelihoods and build resilience to climate change across the region. By integrating agrifood systems into regional and global strategies, FAO is enabling transformative actions that address land degradation while driving progress toward sustainable development and resilience. A call to action The challenges faced by the NENA region are emblematic of a global crisis that demands immediate and collective action. Through its interventions at UNCCD COP16, FAO is reaffirming its commitment to solutions that prioritise sustainability, inclusivity, and resilience. The abovementioned Regional Investment Framework is central to this effort. By fostering partnerships, empowering communities, and leveraging innovative approaches, FAO is addressing the NENA region's unique challenges while setting a precedent for global action against land degradation and desertification. As we advance, the outcomes of UNCCD COP16 will drive transformative change, shaping a future where sustainable land management and agrifood systems foster resilience and prosperity. Let us seize this moment to ensure that no region, no community, and no individual is left behind in the fight for a sustainable planet. The Prince of Wales will feature in a new documentary about the Earthshot Prize , an environmental initiative which he founded four years ago. William will appear in a special introduction to The Earthshot Report on BBC One , which hopes to offer a “dose of urgent optimism” by showcasing the environmental solutions around the world which have been inspired by the competition. The prince founded the Earthshot Prize four years ago to discover and scale up groundbreaking solutions to repair the planet, with a £50 million prize fund spanning 10 years. In a trailer on the Earthshot Prize’s social media account, the prince stands in a forest holding an umbrella. “Our planet needs our help and every year counts,” he says, adding: “So what have we achieved in 2024?” William, who this week will take part in the state visit of the Emir of Qatar , Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and his wife, Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim Al Thani, will appear in a special introduction to the documentary. The documentary will be hosted by Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham, a supporter of the initiative. “Join us in a special look back at the year, exploring the game-changing solutions on our journey to a sustainable future,” she says in a voiceover. At the Earthshot awards ceremony earlier this month, William said the prize was a “collaborative movement for change”. Prince William took the chance to pay tribute to Kate , who wasn’t in Cape Town for the glittering ceremony as she eases herself back into public duties following her cancer recovery. “She’s been...amazing...this whole year. I know she will be really keen to see tonight be a success,” he said. “I now invite you to join the movement for climate innovation that’s happening around the world,” William added. “Because that’s why we’re here. To champion the dreamers, the thinkers and the innovators from every walk of life, who share an ambition to build a better, more sustainable world. “We’ll do everything we can to support them and help speed their solutions to scale. Because when they succeed, we all succeed. When they thrive, we all thrive.” The documentary will feature interviews with Earthshot finalists including Notpla, Amazon Sacred Headwaters, Restor and Mukuru Clean Stoves. It will share the personal stories behind their ideas. Hannah Jones, chief executive of the Earthshot Prize, said: “At a time when there is so much pessimism about the environment, The Earthshot Report is the dose of urgent optimism we need. “We are proud to be able to amplify the inspiring stories of Earthshot innovators and showcase the growing global movement of climate creativity they are leading. “We are honoured to collaborate with the BBC and PBS to bring these compelling stories of Earthshot innovators and entrepreneurs to millions of people across the globe.” The Earthshot Report will be shown on BBC One and iPlayer at 5pm GMT on Sunday December 15 and on PBS at 8pm ET on Wednesday December 18.

Developing nations call $300b COP29 climate deal ‘an insult’Meaningful internet access goes beyond having easy and everyday access to broadband internet and digital devices. Equally important is whether Canadians can use their digital access for their benefit. That depends on their ability to acquire and apply the skills necessary to navigate the online world. Many adults across the country face daily challenges with accessing and finding what they need online, reflecting a three-tiered digital divide . This divide describes differences in how people get connected, how they regularly use online resources and obtain what they need. Regular and consistent access to devices and internet connections can certainly foster digital skills. But this knowledge is incomplete and unequally distributed without formal learning and opportunities for practice in supported and safe digital spaces. Differing portraits of digital access Government and telecommunication companies have focussed on the broadband infrastructure divide, arguing that when the whole country is connected people will figure out how to navigate online by themselves. But research shows this isn’t the case . The differences between living with seamless and digital access can be illustrated through storytelling grounded in research . With a colleague, I developed composite (fictional) profiles of two adults, Eva and Sandra, based on a review of research related to digital access, statistical analysis of data from the Canadian Internet Use Survey , and interviews we conducted with teachers and adult learners. Hardware, printer, financial, IT inequities Eva has seamless internet access and easily engages with daily tasks in digital spaces at home, in transit and at her place of employment, using hardware and software supplied and managed by an IT department. She responds to emails on the bus, using her unlimited, employer-paid 5G data talk-and-text plan, and renews her licence plate online. At work, she prints, signs, scans and returns a form. By contrast, Sandra spends a big chunk of her day navigating digital hurdles to accomplish what might be considered quick and easy tasks. They include bus trips to the local library for internet access and a local supply store to print and scan a form. To save time and her phone’s data plan — which she pays for out of her tight household budget — Sandra must stay at the library to accomplish other tasks requiring technology. She checks her college application and searches for a solution to her back pain. A lack of privacy, a noisy environment, extra costs and a lack of assistance are just a few of the barriers she must contend with. It’s not all about broadband As a PhD student, I have researched inequities in digital access since before the pandemic when it was not a mainstream topic. During the pandemic, many of us experienced difficulties when in-person services were no longer available . If we had reliable ways to reach the “outside” world by going online , we saw how crucial this was. But even when people have access to devices and internet connections, this knowledge is incomplete and unequally distributed without formal learning and opportunities for practice in supported and safe digital spaces. Many adults go to adult education programs to learn and practice their digital skills — whether in adult literacy or settlement language training programs serving immigrants. These programs help adults develop functional literacy and language skills that help them to get further education, apprenticeship training, certification and employment. As I saw myself over a fifteen-year period working in this field prior to my doctoral research, these programs are well positioned to offer digital learning opportunities as part of adult upgrading, vocational, language and literacy skills curriculums. Programs can be tailored to meet specific community literacy needs — for example, for Indigenous or Deaf learners , and can be offered in both official languages. Digital learning skills, places to use them Digital technologies have been an integral part of many adult education programs for years . Guided and facilitated by instructors, students are expected to: participate using digital devices, to use an email address to communicate, to complete online forms, and to work collaboratively online. Some adult education programs have hired people to work as digital navigators who help adult learners or their teachers with learning or teaching online access. Yet many adult education programs must currently reapply for operational financing each year . Sustained federal funding needed Recently, I co-authored a paper published by the Institute of Research on Public Policy with Christine Pinsent-Johnson, a policy and research specialist. We argue that to meaningfully address digital divides, Employment and Social Development Canada should work with provincial and territorial governments to provide sustained, core funding to provincial and territorial adult education programs. (A French version of this paper is also available , which I discussed recently on Radio Canada ). These key adult education programs help Canadians acquire needed digital literacy skills for further education, apprenticeship training, certification and employment. Regular funding would stabilize operations, facilitate long-term planning and reduce administrative costs. It would do that particularly by ensuring predictable support for equipment purchases, IT infrastructure and software licensing. National platform to share best practices Additionally, we advocate for the creation of a national platform for educators to share learning materials and best practices. A similar platform for the federally funded settlement language programs could serve as a model. Beyond this platform, we call for a cross-sectoral network to co-ordinate programs aimed at enhancing digital skills and access for underserved communities. Such initiatives can connect provincial organizations with similar missions, leverage existing partnerships and forge new collaborations. They can serve as vital hubs for integrating informal and formal digital skills learning. One example is a not-for-profit organization like AlphaPlus , where I worked as a technology coach and researcher some years ago. This organization supports adult literacy programs in Ontario with professional development, and guides good practices for building digital technology capacity to support adult learners, for example, around AI . With regular funding and a mandate to co-ordinate efforts in digital skills development, such organizations could take on a much larger role supporting adult education programs. A more consistent and sustained approach is needed to support and connect similar efforts across the country to ensure equitable access to digital resources and learning opportunities across diverse Canadian communities. Such an approach will help citizens acquire the digital literacy skills and experience they need to participate meaningfully and effectively in Canadian society and the labour market.

This stark contrast between their fates highlighted the fleeting nature of success and the unpredictability of life in the entertainment industry. Money manager Vanguard has tapped Canadian Joanna Rotenberg, formerly an executive at BMO and Fidelity Investments, to lead a new division for advice and wealth management. Cole Burston/The Globe and Mail Ms. Rotenberg’s hiring is part of a restructuring led by Vanguard’s new chief executive officer, Salim Ramji, who is also Canadian. Mr. Ramji was hired from rival BlackRock Inc., where he ran the index investing business, and he is now putting his imprint on Vanguard, which manages US$10-trillion in assets. Historically, Vanguard was known for creating low-cost, exchange-traded funds that track major stock indexes and it has a strong following from do-it-yourself investors. In 2015, the company created a new business called Vanguard Personal Advisor Services to give investment advice to clients with assets of US$50,000 or more. That business has grown over the past nine years to manage US$900-billion, and Vanguard is now carving it out as a stand-alone division. Ms. Rotenberg most recently worked for Fidelity Investments, joining the U.S. wealth management giant in 2021 when it was transitioning away from being a company that was best known for actively managed mutual funds and star stock-pickers. Wealth management has evolved dramatically over the past two decades and Fidelity wanted to focus more on individual investors who have much more market knowledge than they used to. However, Fidelity divided the personal investing business into two units in 2023 – one for self-directed customers and another for retail investors who want advisory services – and Ms. Rotenberg left shortly after . In Canada, she is well-known on Bay Street, having worked at Bank of Montreal for 11 years, where she led the wealth management division and also held the roles of chief marketing officer and head of strategy. Before that, she spent nearly a decade at consulting giant McKinsey & Co., where she was a partner.A Dream Written with a Single Hand - Soul Card Game "Deal Your Soul! Another key focus of the meeting was the importance of bolstering domestic consumption and reducing reliance on foreign markets. With global trade tensions on the rise and increasing protectionism threatening traditional export markets, China must pivot towards a more consumption-driven economy to ensure long-term stability and growth. This will require policies that promote household income growth, consumer confidence, and the development of domestic industries to meet the needs of Chinese consumers.Winston's performance in snowy win over Steelers adds new layer to Browns' quarterback conundrum CLEVELAND (AP) — Shortly after doing a face-down snow angel, firing a few celebratory snowballs and singing “Jingle Bells” on his way to the media room, Jameis Winston ended his postgame news conference with a simple question. Tom Withers, The Associated Press Nov 22, 2024 2:58 PM Nov 22, 2024 3:05 PM Share by Email Share on Facebook Share on X Share on LinkedIn Print Share via Text Message in the second half of an NFL football game, Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024, in Cleveland. The Browns won 24-19. (AP Photo/Sue Ogrocki) CLEVELAND (AP) — Shortly after doing a face-down snow angel, firing a few celebratory snowballs and singing “Jingle Bells” on his way to the media room, Jameis Winston ended his postgame news conference with a simple question. “Am I a Brown yet?” he asked. He is now. And who knows? Maybe for a lot longer than expected. Winston entered Cleveland football folklore on Thursday night by leading the Browns to a 24-19 win over the division rival Pittsburgh Steelers, who had their five-game winning streak stopped. Winston's performance at Huntington Bank Field, which transformed into the world's largest snow globe, not only made him an instantaneous hero in the eyes of Browns fans but added another wrinkle to the team's ever-changing, never-ending quarterback conundrum. In his fourth start since Deshaun Watson's season-ending Achilles tendon injury, Winston made enough big plays to help the Browns (3-8) get a victory that should quiet conjecture about coach Kevin Stefanski's job. Some wins mean more than others. In Cleveland, beating the Steelers is as big as it gets. But beyond any instant gratification, Winston has given the Browns more to consider as they move forward. Watson's future with Cleveland is highly uncertain since it will still be months before the team has a grip on whether he's even an option in 2025, his fourth year since signing a $230 million, fully guaranteed contract that has proven calamitous. It's also possible the Browns will cut ties with Watson. They signed Winston to a one-year contract to be Watson's backup. But the unexpected events of 2024 have changed plans and led to the possibility that the 30-year-old Winston could become Cleveland's full-time QB or a bridge to their next young one. So much is unclear. What's not is that Winston, who leaped into the end zone on fourth-and-2 for a TD to put the Browns ahead 18-6 in the fourth quarter, is a difference maker. With his larger-than-life personality and the joy he shows whether practicing or throwing three touchdown passes, he has lifted the Browns. A man of faith, he's made his teammates believe. Winston has done what Watson couldn't: made the Browns better. “A very, very authentic person,” Stefanski said Friday on a Zoom call. “He’s the same guy every single day. He's the same guy at 5 a.m. as he at 5 p.m. He brings great energy to everything he does, and I think his teammates appreciate that about him.” Winston, who is 2-2 as a starter with wins over the Steelers and Baltimore Ravens, has a knack for inspiring through fiery, preacher-like pregame speeches. But what has impressed the Browns is his ability to stay calm in the storm. “He doesn’t get rattled,” said Myles Garrett, who had three sacks against the Steelers . “He’s just tuned in and focused as anyone I’ve seen at that position. Turn the page. There was a turnover, came back to the sideline, ‘Love you. I’m sorry. We’re going to get it back.’ He was already on to the next one, ‘How can we complete the mission?’ “I have a lot of respect for him. First was from afar and now seeing it on the field in front of me, it’s a blessing to have someone who plays a game with such a passion and want-to. You can’t ask for a better teammate when they take those things to heart and they want to play for you like we’re actually brothers and that’s what we have to attain. That brotherhood.” What's working Winston has done something else Watson couldn't: move the offense. The Browns scored more than 20 points for just the second time this season, and like Joe Flacco a year ago, Winston has shown that Stefanski's system works with a quarterback patient enough to let plays develop and unafraid to take shots downfield. What needs help The conditions certainly were a factor, but the Browns were a miserable 1 of 10 on third down, a season-long trend. However, Cleveland converted all four fourth-down tries, including a fourth-and-3 pass from Winston to Jerry Jeudy with 2:36 left that helped set up Nick Chubb's go-ahead TD run. Stock up RT Jack Conklin. Garrett outplayed Steelers star T.J. Watt in their rivalry within the rivalry partly because Conklin did a nice job containing Pittsburgh's edge rusher, who was held without a sack and had one tackle for loss. Conklin has made a remarkable comeback since undergoing reconstructive knee surgery last year. Stock down Owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam. Their desire to build a dome is well intended, but an indoor game could never come close to matching the surreal setting of Thursday night, when snow swirled throughout the stadium and covered nearly all the yard lines and hash marks. “It was beautiful,” Winston said. Injuries WR Cedric Tillman is in the concussion protocol. He had two catches before taking a big hit on the final play of the third quarter. Key numbers 9 — Consecutive home wins for the Browns in Thursday night games. Three of those have come against Pittsburgh. The "small essay" incident, where Dong Yuhui was accused of plagiarism and misconduct in one of his writings, initially shook the foundations of his business empire. Many questioned his integrity and credibility, and there were fears that his business would crumble under the weight of the scandal. However, instead of succumbing to the pressure, Dong Yuhui took a different approach. He publicly apologized for his actions, took full responsibility, and vowed to make amends.

The poet, author and painter had not lived in South Africa for decades, leaving in the early 1960s to settle in Paris, where he became a global voice against apartheid. What was intended to be a short and secret trip back in 1975 led to him spending seven years in jail, two in solitary confinement, after he was betrayed and arrested. French president Francois Mitterrand helped secure his release in 1982 and he returned to France to become a citizen. He travelled back to South Africa regularly, according to his daughter Daphnee Breytenbach, who confirmed his death to AFP. "My father, the South African painter and poet Breyten Breytenbach, died peacefully on Sunday, November 24, in Paris, at the age of 85," she said. "Immense artist, militant against apartheid, he fought for a better world until the end." Breytenbach was born in the small Western Cape town of Bonnievale in 1939 at a time when Afrikaans was emerging with a distinct identity as a language, having been derided as "kitchen Dutch". When in 1964 Breytenbach published his first volume of poetry -- "Die ysterkoei moet sweet", or The Iron Cow Must Sweat -- Afrikaans was not just ascendent but had given the name "apartheid" to South Africa's brutal system of racial segregation. With Afrikaners in power, their language became ever more associated with the regime. "I'd never reject Afrikaans as a language, but I reject it as part of the Afrikaner political identity. I no longer consider myself an Afrikaner," he said in an interview with The New York Times the following year. In his language and politics, Breytenbach pushed back against the strictures of the country in which he was born. He travelled around Europe in his early 20s, eventually settling in 1962 in Paris, where he met his wife, Yolande Ngo Thi Hoang Lien, who was born in Vietnam and raised in France. She was refused a visa to visit South Africa in the late 1960s as she was considered "non-white" by the apartheid system. Breytenbach returned to the country in the early 1970s on a false passport to deliver money to the anti-apartheid struggle and meet white activists. But he was discovered and sentenced to nine years in prison, serving seven. Of his more than 50 books, most are in Afrikaans. His acclaimed 1984 prison memoir, "The True Confession of an Albino Terrorist", is in English. In the book, he recalls the horrors of hearing fellow inmates being hanged, often for political crimes. "Very often –- no, all the time really –- I relive those years of horror and corruption, and I try to imagine, as I did then with the heart an impediment to breathing, what it must be like to be executed. What it must be like to be. Executed," he wrote. His path crossed once, briefly, with another famous inmate. Nelson Mandela was for a time transferred from Robben Island to Pollsmoor prison in Cape Town, where Breytenbach was serving his time. The writer was tasked with preparing new prison clothes for the future president. Breytenbach eventually turned to painting to portray surreal human and animal figures, often in captivity, with his art displayed in Johannesburg, Brussels, Amsterdam, Hong Kong and Paris. His literature gathered several prizes, including the international Zbigniew Herbert International Literary Award (2017), the Mahmoud Darwish Literature Prize (2010) and the Van der Hoogt prize for Dutch literature (1972). "His poems are rich in metaphors and are a complex mixture of references to Buddhism, Afrikaans idiomatic speech, and memories of the South African landscape," according to the Hague-based Writers Unlimited foundation. For all his activism, when democracy arrived in 1994, the older and gray-bearded Breytenbach did not return to embrace the new South Africa. He wrestled with the failings of the democratic government, even with Mandela, despairing at what he called in Harpers magazine in 2008 the "seemingly never-ending parade of corrupt clowns in power at all levels". Breytenbach also taught at the University of Cape Town, the Goree Institute in Dakar and New York University. zm-gs-br/lhd/js

President Joe Biden and president-elect Donald Trump issued statements Sunday, and both said Carter was a president who worked to better Americans’ lives. “He was a man of great character and courage, hope and optimism,” Biden and First Lady Jill Biden said in a statement. “We will always cherish seeing him and Rosalynn together. The love shared between Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter is the definition of partnership and their humble leadership is the definition of patriotism.” Trump said Carter dealt with “enormous responsibility” that only other presidents could relate to. “The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans,” Trump said in a post to Truth Social. “For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude.” ‘One of my heroes’ Fellow Georgia politicians, including Democratic Sens. Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, issued passionate statements following the news Sunday. Warnock referred to the Plains native as “one of my heroes.” “His leadership was driven by love, his life’s project grounded in compassion and a commitment to human dignity,” Warnock said. “For those of us who have the privilege of representing our communities in elected office, Jimmy Carter is a shining example of what it means to make your faith come alive through the noble work of public service.” Ossoff said Carter’s work “changed the lives of many across our state, our country, and around the world.” “The State of Georgia and the United States are better places because of President Jimmy Carter,” Ossoff said. Former Sen. Sam Nunn, from Georgia, lauded Carter for his “spine of steel and intrepid focus and determination.” “Colin Powell and I had front row seats to these unique Carter traits in Haiti in 1994,” he said in a statement. “I will never forget nervously watching President Carter negotiate every word of the Haitian military’s peaceful turnover of authority, while the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne prepared to land on the roof of the military headquarters, where we were finishing the agreement.” Brad Raffensperger, Georgia secretary of state, said Carter devoted his life to serving the U.S. “As a true servant-leader, he devoted his post-presidency to spreading the very best of American ideals across the globe,” Raffensperger said in a statement Sunday. “His commitment to peace, democracy, and human rights has left an indelible mark on the world.” The Democratic Party of Georgia’s Chair, Rep. Nikema Williams, said Carter “leaves one of the greatest legacies of humanitarianism in history.” “My husband Leslie and I named our son Carter after our 39th president because he showed us that ordinary Georgians can do extraordinary things,” Williams said. “He was one of the greatest public servants of our time – and he was also a peanut farmer from Plains, Georgia. From a southwest Georgia town of a few hundred people to the Oval Office, President Carter went from sowing crops to sowing the seeds of peace around the world.” Georgia Lt. Gov. Ines Owens said Carter “represented small towns like Plains, Georgia and never forgot where he and his family came from.” Georgia’s Carter had ‘calm spirit and deep faith’ Major national lawmakers outside the Peach State offered their thoughts too, including GOP Sen. Mitch McConnell. McConnell said Carter’s “calm spirit and deep faith seemed “unshakable” during difficulties in his presidency. “President Carter lived a truly American dream,” McConnell said. “A devoutly religious peanut farmer from small-town Georgia volunteered to serve his country in uniform. He found himself manning cutting-edge submarines hundreds of feet beneath the ocean. He returned home and saved the family farm before feeling drawn to a different sort of public service. And less than 15 years after his first campaign for the state Senate, his fellow Americans elected him leader of the free world.” Chuck Schumer, the Democratic Senate majority leader, called Carter “one of our most humble and devoted public servants.” “President Carter’s faith in the American people and his belief in the power of kindness and humility leave a strong legacy,” Schumer said. “He taught us that the strength of a leader lies not in rhetoric but in action, not in personal gain but in service to others.” ©2024 The Charlotte Observer. The Eagles are looking to clinch the NFC East title while completing a rare sweep of the rival Dallas Cowboys on Sunday in Philadelphia. The Eagles (12-3) will have to play without starting quarterback Jalen Hurts, who sustained a concussion during last weekend's 36-33 loss at Washington that snapped their team-record 10-game winning streak. He was ruled out on Friday after missing practice all week. Backup quarterback Kenny Pickett suffered a rib injury against the Commanders, but he was a full participant at Thursday's practice and was limited on Friday. Pickett is expected to start, with Tanner McKee his backup on Sunday as Philadelphia tries to sweep Dallas for the first time since 2011. Meanwhile, the Cowboys (7-8) are clicking with their own QB2 at the controls. Cooper Rush has guided Dallas to wins in four of the last five games, throwing nine touchdown passes and just one interception in that span. The Cowboys are in the unfamiliar position of playing spoiler, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020. Two more wins would give Dallas its fourth straight winning season under fifth-year coach Mike McCarthy. "It's hard to win games in this league. It's definitely an end goal just to have a winning season," Cowboys right guard Brock Hoffman said. "... But definitely where we've been at on this journey, take it week by week, win these last two games, have a winning season, and it's definitely a big boost going into next season." The Eagles cruised to a 34-6 win over the Cowboys in Arlington, Texas, in the first meeting in Week 10, with Hurts throwing two touchdown passes and rushing for two scores. Rush finished with just 45 yards on 13-of-23 passing. Pickett replaced a woozy Hurts in the first quarter against Washington and finished the drive with a touchdown pass to A.J. Brown. "I thought it was so cool for our guys to have the confidence in (Pickett) to just hop in there and handle a third down, handle another completion, throw a third-down touchdown in the red zone," Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore said Tuesday. "I thought that was a really cool moment." A sixth-round pick out of Stanford in 2023, McKee has yet to appear in a regular-season game. "I feel like I've always been preparing to be the starter and preparing to play, and so my preparation is going to stay the same," McKee said Tuesday. "And you know, I'm obviously excited for any opportunity that I do get, but we're going to take it day by day for those guys." No matter who plays QB, the Eagles likely will lean heavily on Saquon Barkley. With a league-leading 1,838 rushing yards, he needs 268 in the last two games to break Eric Dickerson's 1984 NFL single-season record of 2,105. Philadelphia's injury report Friday also included the team ruling out wide receiver Britain Covey (neck), who also returns punts, and running back Will Shipley (concussion), a contributor on kickoff return duty. Linebacker Nakobe Dean (abdomen) is doubtful after limited participation on Friday, while defensive end Bryce Huff (wrist) was a full participant and listed as questionable. He would need to be activated from injured reserve to play on Sunday. The Cowboys have shut down star wideout CeeDee Lamb for the rest of the season because of a sprained right shoulder. Also ruled out for Sunday are cornerbacks Kemon Hall (hamstring) and Amani Oruwariye (foot). Guard TJ Bass (thigh) is doubtful, while those with questionable status are wide receivers Jalen Brooks (knee) and Jalen Tolbert (finger), offensive tackles Chuma Edoga (toe) and Asim Richards (ankle), linebackers Eric Kendricks (calf) and Nick Vigil (foot), and safety Donovan Wilson (knee). --Field Level Media Get any of our free daily email newsletters — news headlines, opinion, e-edition, obituaries and more. The Cooper Companies: Fiscal Q4 Earnings SnapshotKing and PM honour former US president Jimmy Carter after his death aged 100
