And that’s not a bad thing. As much as the five-time defending AFC East champion Bills (12-3) rely on Allen to run what’s still a highly productive offense that’s averaging 31.3 points per outing, a James Cook-led running attack has provided Buffalo an added dimension. Take Buffalo’s 24-21 win over the New England Patriots on Sunday, for example. In a first half in which the defense struggled to get the Pats off the field and Allen went 9 of 17 for 78 yards, Cook injected the necessary spark with a 46-yard touchdown run in helping Buffalo rally from a 14-0 deficit. The touchdown was Cook’s 14th rushing of the season, moving him into a tie for the NFL lead entering Monday. And it was Buffalo’s 29th TD rushing of the season, matching the team record set in 2016. Allen’s passing numbers have dipped — he’s averaging 237 yards per outing, as opposed to 284 in 2020 when he shattered the Bills single-season record. The run game has picked up the slack. Buffalo is averaging 366.5 yards per outing — down slightly from last season (374.5). And yet it hasn’t dented the team’s record. The Bills have 12 wins for the eighth time in team history, and third since 2020. This is the balance coach Sean McDermott not only envisioned, but demanded when changing offensive coordinators midway through last season by replacing Ken Dorsey with Joe Brady. McDermott has always emphasized his belief of games being won at the line of scrimmage. And the Bills have been a different team with Brady overseeing the offense and incorporating six-man fronts to help open holes for the running game. Buffalo’s running attack takes the pressure off Allen having to win games with his arm. It also gives the Bills a ball-control dimension to ease the load from a patchwork and injury-depleted defense, which should be McDermott’s most pressing concern entering the playoffs. The defense — missing four starters including three in the secondary — overcame its depleted ranks against New England with takeaways on the Patriots first three possessions of the second half. The turnover run was capped by cornerback Taron Johnson falling on a loose ball for a touchdown to put the Bills ahead 24-14 with 10:10 left after rookie Drake Maye’s backward pass glanced off the hands of Rhamondre Stevenson. The Bills improved to 24-2 against quarterbacks with 16 or fewer starts since 2019. But that won’t matter much if Buffalo envisions a deep playoff run in an AFC bracket that already includes the experienced likes of Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson and Russell Wilson. Meantime, McDermott has another growing concern on his hands involving a mistake-prone special teams unit. Three weeks ago, in a 44-42 loss to the Rams, Buffalo couldn’t muster a punt block in the final seconds because it only fielded nine players. Against New England, the Patriots caught Buffalo sleeping with a fake punt to convert a fourth-and-1 at its 23. “We got to do a better job there in making sure we get the right grouping on the field,” McDermott said, before acknowledging the decision fell on coordinator Matthew Smiley. A recent health initiative by the health-tech start-up, Knoxxi Health Ghana, at Mallam Market has uncovered concerning health trends among local traders. Over 70% of the traders in the market were found to have various stages of high blood pressure, with many of them unaware of their condition. This revelation came after a month-long community health program, where Knoxxi Health, in collaboration with the Ablekuma North Health Directorate, provided free health check-ups to market women. The program, which benefited over 1,580 women, aimed at promoting wellness and encouraging early detection of health issues, especially non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The results were striking. Only 28.3% of the participants had normal blood pressure, while the remaining 71.7% were affected by hypertension at varying levels, from stage one to crisis stage. Notably, 31.9% had stage one hypertension, 22.9% had stage two hypertension, and 14.9% were in an elevated blood pressure range. Alarmingly, 2.09% of the women were found to be at crisis level hypertension, with the majority of these cases occurring in individuals aged 65 and above. However, some traders aged between 25 and 64 also exhibited signs of crisis-level hypertension. Knoxxi Health’s founder and CEO, Michael Amankwa, described the situation as “alarming,” pointing out that, prior to the screenings, 78% of the women had confidently claimed they were not affected by high blood pressure. This disparity highlights a critical gap in health awareness, especially in underserved communities where market traders often prioritize their livelihoods over regular health check-ups. Beyond hypertension, the health screenings also uncovered concerning levels of blood sugar. While not as alarming as the hypertension findings, over 47% of the traders exhibited fasting blood sugar results indicating possible prediabetes or diabetic conditions, with 15% showing diabetic and prediabetic conditions after meals. The health checks, which were offered at a subsidized fee after the free screening phase, included blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar tests, oxygen levels, body temperature, body mass index (BMI), and mental health assessments. These vital signs were tracked and analyzed using Knoxxi Health’s digital platform, which collects data, provides actionable insights, and offers real-time health tips to the participants. The platform does not diagnose diseases but helps individuals monitor their health and take timely actions based on the data collected. One of the most significant findings from the initiative was the traders’ reluctance to seek medical help despite knowing their health was at risk. Many expressed concerns about missing out on profits by leaving their stalls for medical consultations. As a result, Knoxxi Health worked closely with the Ablekuma North Health Directorate to dispatch medical doctors to the market, ensuring that urgent cases received attention on-site. The program also highlighted the potential of technology in healthcare, as Knoxxi Health’s digital solutions enabled continuous monitoring and early intervention. By analyzing trends in vital signs, the platform helps healthcare professionals identify risks before they escalate into serious health conditions. She noted that the use of technology in monitoring health metrics allows for early intervention and more effective management of NCDs. The two companies said they had signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday and that smaller Nissan alliance member Mitsubishi Motors also had agreed to join the talks on integrating their businesses. Honda will initially lead the new management, retaining the principles and brands of each company. Government regulators close investigation into Ford Focus recalls Government safety regulators are closing an investigation into two previous recalls of the Ford Focus after determining that Ford Motor Co. has satisfied its concerns. Ford recalled around 1.5 million Ford Focus sedans from the 2012-2018 model years in 2018 because they could lose power. The issue was a malfunctioning canister purge valve and software that didn’t adequately detect when it was stuck open. Ford fixed the software in two separate recalls, but after cars continued to stall, the government opened an inquiry last year. Earlier this fall, Ford offered to replace the canister purge valve on all of the vehicles, satisfying regulators' concerns. A deadly stampede at a soccer match killed at least 56 people in Guinea's second city N'Zerekore, the junta-controlled government said Monday. The events at Sunday's match, which were initially reported as clashes between fans, were triggered after a player was sent off at the end of the game, witnesses said. The match in the southeastern city was the final of a tournament organized in honor of Guinea's junta leader, Mamady Doumbouya, who seized power in a 2021 coup and has installed himself as president. The opposition has accused the junta of using sport for political ends. Witnesses said fans invaded the pitch following the referee's decision, with some attacking the stand designated for officials, prompting the intervention of security forces. "Protests of dissatisfaction with refereeing decisions led to stone-throwing by supporters, resulting in fatal stampedes," said a government statement which was read out on national television. "Hospital services have put the provisional death toll at 56, with several others injured," it added, describing the incident as a "tragic event". "The government assures the public that investigations will be carried out to establish who is responsible for this unfortunate event", the statement said. Young people also set fire to a police station overnight, according to public television. Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah condemned the "incidents that marred the match between the teams of Labe and N'Zerekore", in a post on Facebook. "The government is following the situation and reiterates its call for calm so as not to impede hospital services from aiding the injured," he added. Doctors told AFP on Sunday that dozens had died. Videos circulating on social media, which AFP was unable to immediately verify, showed scenes of chaos in the street outside the match and numerous bodies lying on the ground. Local media reported that hospital wards and a morgue were overwhelmed by the injured and dead. Such tournaments and other public gatherings have become common in the West African nation, in what is widely seen as a campaign to promote Doumbouya's candidacy in any future presidential election. The military seized power by force in September 2021 by overthrowing civilian President Alpha Conde. Under international pressure, the junta pledged to hand power back to a civilian government by the end of 2024 but has since made clear it will not. Several of Doumbouya's aides have recently expressed their support for his possible presidential bid. One of the last remaining dissident voices in Guinea, the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC), published a statement expressing its "indignation" at the tragedy in N'Zerekore. It said it held the junta chief and his government "directly responsible for this disaster, which cost the lives of innocent citizens, including many children". "This demonstrates the cynical use of sport by the junta, exploiting these images of mobilization for political ends," the statement added. The pro-democracy movement called on Guineans "to mobilize calmly and resolutely to demand an end to this regime from December 31, 2024".
