A health care advocacy group is railing against President-elect Donald Trump’s selection of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for health and human services secretary, saying it will be “dangerous” to the health of the American people. During a news conference Friday in front of Portland City Hall, several speakers affiliated with the nonprofit Protect Our Care, which advocates to protect the Affordable Care Act, Medicare and Medicaid, decried Kennedy’s false rhetoric questioning the safety and efficacy of vaccines, among other conspiracy theories. “His message is, ‘We are going to make eradicated diseases great again,’ ” said Mark Gallagher, a leader of Protect Our Care Maine. Vaccines have stopped or slowed the spread of infectious diseases such as measles, mumps, polio, pertussis, chickenpox and influenza, and saved millions of lives. The quick development of COVID-19 vaccines saved millions of lives worldwide during the pandemic. Kennedy has falsely claimed that vaccines cause autism, and cast doubts about the safety of vaccines during testimony before the Maine Legislature in 2015. He also has spread myths that the 1918 influenza pandemic was caused by vaccine research, among other things. Trump’s nominees must be confirmed by the Senate, and Maine’s senators, Republican Susan Collins and independent Angus King, have not yet taken a stand on specific nominees, according to their offices. “I think you are going to do some unbelievable things,” Trump said, praising RFK Jr. during a recent event at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. “If you like health and you like people that live a long time, it’s the most important position.” Kennedy, in defending his nomination, said on the X social media platform that “there’s a generational opportunity to bring together the greatest minds in science, medicine, industry, and government to put an end to the chronic disease epidemic.” “Together we will clean up corruption, stop the revolving door between industry and government, and return our health agencies to their rich tradition of gold-standard, evidence-based science,” Kennedy wrote. “I will provide Americans with transparency and access to all the data so they can make informed choices for themselves and their families.” But Dr. Patricia Hymanson, a retired physician and former state lawmaker, said Kennedy has “embraced radical conspiracy theories” about science and medicine. Hymanson also called out Kennedy for wanting to pause scientific research into new medications. “He will sabotage science and hurt people,” said Hymanson, speaking on behalf of the Maine Medical Association, which represents physicians. “We are calling on our entire federal delegation to stop this nomination. We cannot have an unqualified person who has never led undermining decades of progress to keep Mainers healthy.” Kennedy has advocated for removing fluoride from public drinking water supplies, considered by health experts as one of the most important advancements in public health during the 20th century. He has also attacked the Food and Drug Administration, which is tasked with protecting the food supply, safety of medications and approving new drugs and vaccines. “If you work for the FDA and are part of this corrupt system, I have two messages for you. 1. Preserve your records. 2. Pack your bags,” Kennedy said on social media in October. Kennedy made an appearance in 2015 before the Maine Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee, w here he repeated debunked claims about vaccines as lawmakers were debating a vaccine bill. Maine lawmakers eventually passed a bill that eliminated religious and philosophic exemptions for school-required vaccinations. Since the law went into effect, Maine’s kindergarten vaccination rates have improved and are among the best in the nation. Matthew Felling, a King spokesperson, said in a written statement that the senator “will review and consider all nominations when the next administration formally sends them to the Senate in 2025 – though he acknowledges that some of those mentioned thus far do not appear to have the requisite background or experience for the important posts in question.” We invite you to add your comments. What Is The Administrative State?TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Bucky Irving isn’t choosy. The rookie running back relishes any opportunity he gets to contribute to the success of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have rebounded from a tough stretch to climb back into a tie for first place in the NFC South. Irving leads NFL rookies in rushing with 732 yards, averaging 5.5 yards per carry while sharing the workload with starter Rachaad White and third-stringer Sean Tucker, who have combined to ease some of the burden on quarterback Baker Mayfield. A fourth-round draft pick out of Oregon, Irving is coming off rushing for a season-best 152 yards and a touchdown in last week’s 26-23 overtime win over the Carolina Panthers. He had another 33 yards receiving, giving him a rookie-leading 1,017 total yards from scrimmage through 12 games. The Bucs (6-6) on Sunday host the Las Vegas Raiders (2-10), who have an outstanding newcomer of their own with Brock Bowers on the verge of breaking the league's record for catches by a rookie tight end. Bowers leads all players, regardless of position, with 84 receptions. He's fourth with 884 yards receiving and second behind Irving among rookies with 895 total yards from scrimmage. “I don’t really like taking all the credit. It’s those guys up front,” Irving said, deferring to Tampa Bay’s improved offensive line. “I think I have to do something special for those guys for Christmas because they’re getting the job done.” The Bucs are eighth in the NFL in rushing at 137.2 yards per game. They’ve gained 100-plus yards on the ground in nine of 12 games after only doing it nine times in 34 games over the past two seasons. Irving, whose ability to make defenders miss and accelerate in the open field, has provided a spark to an offense that sputtered without injured wide receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin during a four-game losing streak. It doesn’t seem to bother the rookie that he still sits behind White on the depth chart. The starter had a 38-yard run in overtime to set up the winning field goal last week. Coach Todd Bowles continues to stress that the Bucs, tied with Atlanta for the NFC South lead, need both Irving and White to be successful. “In our room, all our success is one,” said Irving, who in the past two weeks became the first rookie since Miles Sanders in 2019 to string together consecutive games with 150-plus yards from scrimmage. “If I’m having success,’’ Irving added, “everybody in the room is having success.” Tampa Bay’s porous secondary figures to be tested by Bowers, the first tight end to lead the league in catches after Week 13 since Todd Christenson in 1986. The first-round draft pick out of Georgia needs three receptions to break Sam LaPorta’s season record (86 in 2023) for catches by a tight end. He’s 116 yards away from joining Mike Ditka (1,076 in 1961) and Kyle Pitts (1,026 in 2021) as the only rookie tight ends to finish with 1,000-plus yards receiving. “I thought he was one of the best tight ends coming out in a long time – not just this draft, but in a long time,” Bowles said. “He’s living up to expectations. He can play wideout, he can play tight end, he can do some fullback, he can run jet sweeps,” the Bucs coach added. “They do a lot of things with him and he’s a very talented guy.” The last time the Raiders went against Mayfield was two seasons ago when he came off a plane to play for the Los Angeles Rams. Despite having minimal time with the playbook and just one brief practice, Mayfield rallied the Rams to a 17-16 victory on a 23-yard touchdown pass with 10 seconds left. Raiders coach Antonio Pierce was the team’s linebackers coach at the time. “He plays the game kind of like Brett Favre, who I played against in (the) league,” Pierce said. “He’s very fiery. He’ll do whatever it takes to make a play. The play’s never dead with him. You’ve got to keep your eyes on him and then stay in coverage, so that’ll be a challenge.” Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell didn’t look as though he had missed nearly six weeks because of a broken thumb when he almost led Las Vegas to a victory at Kansas City last week. He completed 23 of 35 passes for 340 yards and two touchdowns in the Raiders’ 19-17 loss to the Chiefs. But O’Connell had a hard time looking at the positives given how close the Raiders came to beating the two-time defending Super Bowl champions. “Definitely some good plays, but it just stinks more than anything,” O’Connell said. “It was just a really hard loss. Even sometimes when you have a game right after, it’s easier to move on. But we had a longer week this week and so kind of really got to sit in it and it’s no fun.” AP Sports Writer Mark Anderson in Las Vegas contributed to this report. NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl
On the Road Don't miss out on the headlines from On the Road. Followed categories will be added to My News. Shocking dash cam footage has captured the moment a cyclist was nearly crushed by a truck. Video of the incident in Melbourne’s Docklands was shared to social media on Monday, showing a large truck turn in front of a cyclist before appearing to run over the man’s leg. The footage goes on to show the drive who caught the incident on camera pursue the truck to a nearby traffic light, beeping their horn to get the truckie’s attention, before it drives away. The truck begins to turn. Picture: Dash Cam Owners Australia The cyclist decided to stop. Picture: Dash Cam Owners Australia In the video, the cyclist appears to be riding in a bike lane at the corner of Montague St and Lorimer St and moves to continue straight. He is forced to stop and get off the bike when a large truck overtakes him before turning left into a slip lane. The cyclist attempts to move to the side of the road but does not have much time before it appears the rear trailer wheels collide with his leg. The cyclists pulled to the side of the lane. Picture: Dash Cam Owners Australia He appeared to be clipped by the trailer wheels. Picture: Dash Cam Owners Australia Commenters online spoke about seeing other dangerous incidents at this intersection, with one saying they’d nearly been run over there themselves. Some were divided over who was in the wrong, wondering if the truck driver noticed the cyclists. “Truckie probably had no idea it even happened,” one wrote. Others questioned why the cyclist pulled up where he did in the slip lane: “Couldn’t have picked a worse place to pull up if he tried”. But many leapt to the cyclist’s defence saying he had the right of way and appeared to have already been ahead of the truck before it turned. “From looking at that footage that truck was going to squash him if he kept on going too,” one wrote on Reddit. “The driver is completely oblivious.” Victoria Police confirmed the cyclist, a 58-year-old Port Melbourne man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The truck driver, 75, from Clyde North, was spoken to by police and investigations continue. The driver who captured the dash cam footage said they had provided a statement to police. It's time for 'Trumpian realism' - and the return of diplomacy to Washington Game Changer: Trump Card - Erdogan &Turkey by Erbil Gunasti is available here By ERBIL GUNASTI Published: 17:25 EST, 2 December 2024 | Updated: 18:16 EST, 2 December 2024 e-mail View comments According to Secretary of State Antony Blinken , America is in a ‘much stronger geopolitical position today than it was four years ago’. Few outside Biden’s increasingly bizarre bubble will agree with that thought– or could possibly agree because this claim is, to use a technical term, a truck-load of tosh. Ever since he arrived in the Oval Office in January 2017, Biden and his advisers have assumed with the neocons that America is ruler of the world and that its president is king - which defies all logic, of course. From Afghanistan to Gaza , the Donbas to Damascus, the certainties that held the post-war world together are fast unraveling. And with Biden in the White House , the limits of American power have been brutally exposed. That’s why, for all the many contradictions about what his true position might be when he takes office in January, I’m confident that Donald Trump will change things for the better. According to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, America is in a ‘much stronger geopolitical position today than it was four years ago’ A car burns after an airstrike next to a hospital in Idlib, Syria. A push by Islamist rebels has brought fresh chaos to the region Whatever he says about ‘America First’ (and which president is not America First) the bigger point is this: Trumps knows there are limits to US power. Aside from Biden and Blinken, does anyone honestly believes that Washington can fight Putin, defend Taiwan, protect Europe, restrain China and settle the Middle East all at the same time? Trump understands that America must pick its battles wisely. Merely by accepting the harsh realities of power, he is ahead. There is more to Trump than that, of course. Like the predecessors he so much admires, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, he knows there is a place for personal diplomacy - threats if necessary. Last week, Trump raised the specter of an all-out trade war with the BRICS grouping of middle ranking powers – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – should they dare to establish an alternative global currency and threaten the primacy of the Dollar. Is he serious? Who knows – that’s part of the point. But the intervention acknowledges another key reality: the world has changed. The rise of China with its multi-billion dollar trade and investment programs means other nations no longer feel obliged to do whatever Washington says. Former ‘client states’ are restive, all too aware that past US promises of prosperity came to nothing. There will be no let-up in Iranian aggression so long as India and China buy Russian and Iranian oil – in the teeth of US sanctions. There is little America and Europe can do about Russia so long as China and the ‘global south’ refuse to condemn Putin’s bloodshed. It might seem a statement of the obvious but after the last four years, it needs saying: diplomacy matters. Whatever we think about Russia's Putin and Xi of China, it is surely better to meet them face-to-face and attempt to build some rapport, as Trump did last time he was in office. He had warm relations with India’s President Narendra Modi, too. It has even been suggested that his advisers at Mar-a-Lago have opened back-channel negotiations with the Iranians. Turkey is another power worth throwing into the mix – is already in the mix, in fact. While other currencies suffer under the threat of US trade sanctions, readers of the financial pages might have noticed that the Turkish Lira is gaining ground. That’s because Trump admires Recep Tayyip Erdogan, president of Turkey. It’s understood the two men have already held discussions via intermediaries – and about time. Under the Biden regime, Turkey, a key player in its region and a huge manufacturer of drones and other weaponry, has been allowed to grow closer to Russia. Given the sensitivity of Turkey's location between Europe, Russia and the Middle East, and bearing in mind its vast network of oil and pipelines, this counts as a mistake. The last few days have seen a fresh outbreak of Islamist inspired fighting in Syria – more sparks flying in a tinder-dry region. Yet there will be no peace deal without Turkey, which already controls much of northern Syria, including a 30-mile buffer zone on its border. It is likely that Turkey will have much to say about the future of Israel, as one of the few powers capable of bridging the gulf between Jerusalem and Gaza. Whatever we think about Russia's Putin and Xi of China, it is surely better to meet them face-to-face and attempt to build some rapport, as Trump did last time he was in office President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey has a good relationship with Donald Trump - and the Turkish Lira has strengthened since Trump's re-election How to re-establish influence in Africa, a continent fast spinning out of control thanks in part to Russian meddling? How to persuade the BRICS nations to take a more positive view of the West? Or to address the world migration crisis and much else besides? America needs help with all these things – from Turkey, from India, Mexico, China, Canada, Venezuela and the EU. It will have to learn to give a little in return and maybe even take a risk or two. There will certainly be losers – I would hate to be Ukrainian right now. But the alternative is pretending with Anthony Blinken and Pangloss that all has been for the best in the best of all possible worlds. And that the past four years have been a roaring success. They haven’t. It’s time to bring this fantasy to an end.
