International artists visited againMr Bayrou, 73, a crucial partner in Macron’s centrist alliance, has been a well-known figure in French politics for decades. His political experience is seen as key in efforts to restore stability as no single party holds a majority at the National Assembly. Mr Macron’s office said in a statement that Mr Bayrou “has been charged with forming a new government”. During the handover ceremony, Mr Bayrou said that “no one knows the difficulty of the situation better” than he does. “I’ve taken reckless risks all along my political life to raise the issue of debt and deficits in the most important elections,” he said. France is under pressure from the European Union’s executive body and financial markets to reduce its colossal debt, estimated to reach 6% of its gross domestic product this year. “I know that the risks of difficulties are much greater than the chances of success,” Mr Bayrou said, adding that he hopes to lead the country towards a “needed reconciliation”. “I think this is the only possible path to success,” he said. The new prime minister is expected to hold talks with political leaders from various parties in the coming days in order to choose new ministers. Former prime minister Michel Barnier resigned last week following a no-confidence vote prompted by budget disputes in the National Assembly, leaving France without a functioning government. Mr Macron in an address to the nation vowed to remain in office until his term ends in 2027. Mr Macron’s centrist alliance does not have a majority in parliament and Mr Bayrou’s Cabinet will need to rely on moderate lawmakers from the left and the right to be able to stay in power. Some conservatives are expected to be part of the new government. Mr Macron’s strategy aims at preventing far-right leader Marine Le Pen from holding “make or break” power over the government. Ms Le Pen helped oust Mr Barnier by joining her National Rally party’s forces to the left to pass the no-confidence motion last week. Mr Bayrou’s appointment is also in line with Mr Macron’s efforts to build a non-aggression pact with the Socialists so that they commit not to vote against the government in any future confidence motion. Mr Bayrou leads the centrist Democratic Movement, known as MoDem, which he founded in 2007. In 2017, he supported Mr Macron’s first presidential bid and became a weighty partner in the French president’s centrist alliance. At the time, he was appointed justice minister, but he quickly resigned from the government amid an investigation into the MoDem’s alleged embezzlement of European Parliament funds. Mr Bayrou this year was cleared in the case by a Paris court, which found eight other party officials guilty and sentenced the party to pay a fine. Mr Bayrou became well known to the French public when he was education minister from 1993 to 1997 in a conservative government. He was three times a candidate for president: in 2002, 2007 and 2012.Pa. broadband authority gives laptops to libraries, nonprofits for public use

A whopping Rs 640 crores will be splurged in the two days of the IPL 2025 players auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. So, expect some madness. Auctions always do that. However, what will truly stand out this time is the ruthlessness of the process. Assembly Election Results Live Updates Maharashtra Election Results Jharkhand Election Results Bypoll Election Results It’s expected to be a market-driven, or rather need-driven, exercise with no place for emotions. This auction will highlight how the IPL has evolved into a market-driven brand proposition, with return on investment (ROI) as its guiding principle. Players will be picked with two clear objectives — assembling a squad capable of winning eight games to make the playoffs and building a strong brand. For instance, picking Rishabh Pant for a hefty price will not just be a cricketing move, it will also be a strategic brand call. Any team Pant joins will see a significant boost in its brand value, which will bring in sponsors; and in the IPL, it all adds up. All the teams have been ideating for days now and have excel sheets ready with clearly defined plans A, B and C. Despite all the efforts, two teams will have a bad season and end up 9th and 10th in the points table. That’s the harsh reality. Emotions have always played a role in the IPL auctions. With some of India’s richest people in the room, it is only natural that egos will come into play -- and that’s where things usually go wrong. However, this auction is expected to be different. It will not be about egos. It will be about team balance and brand. After 18 years, the teams seem to have a better understanding of cricket and the needs of their teams. They are better prepared to stick to the plans and make tough decision under pressure. You need to be extremely focused to get it right”. Venky Mysore, CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders, put it well, “We come in with a very conscious strategy. We want to add particular skillsets to the side and not simply go by names. Team balance is the key and that’s what we will aim to do again in the auction”. At the auction, some of cricket’s sharpest minds will be at the helm, strategizing for their franchises. If it is Stephen F leming and MS Dhoni for Chennai Super Kings and Mahela Jayawardene for Mumbai Indians, it will be Zaheer Khan for the Lucknow Super Giants and Ashish Nehra for Gujarat Titans. Each franchise knows that not every buy will go their way. With 10 teams now in the fray, this has become the norm. The challenge is to maintain composure. It is tough to back off when the need is urgent. Desperation leads to mistakes. Unlike smaller auctions, which are all about who is available and less about cricketing pedigree, the talent pool in the mega auction is enormous. At the end of the two-day mega auction, every team will walk away with matchwinners in their ranks. After that it will be all about which team plays the best cricket. You can do only so much at the auction table. The final act is always performed on the 22 yards, where the game is ultimately decided. Stock futures declined early Friday after major averages posted solid gains so far this holiday week. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 120 points. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures dipped 0.3% each. These moves follow thin trading action in Thursday's regular session . The 30-stock Dow eked out a narrow gain for its fifth winning day, while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite ended the session just below the flatline. The three major U.S. indexes are in the green week to date after posting strong back-to-back gains at the start of the shortened holiday week. The S&P 500 is up 1.8% so far this week. The broad market index posted its best Christmas Eve performance since 1974 on Tuesday, according to Bespoke. The Dow has gained 1.1% this week, and a run-up in megacap tech stocks has pushed the Nasdaq Composite 2.3% higher. Although trading has been muted this week, investors hope stocks will surge into the new year, spurred by the so-called "Santa Claus rally ." This refers to the market's tendency to rise in the final five trading days of the year and the first two in January. "The nation is experiencing a collective sigh of relief after navigating through a contentious election cycle and unusual market dynamics to end 2024 with strong year-to-date gains," said Todd Ahlsten, chief investment officer at Parnassus Investments. "Looking ahead to 2025, the markets are expected to broaden and improve." In December, the Nasdaq is on pace for a 4.2% advance, lifted by a jump in Tesla and Alphabet shares, as well as by a rally in Apple that's brought the iPhone maker closer to a $4 trillion market cap. The S&P 500 is toting a nearly 0.1% gain on the month. The Dow is on pace for its worst month since April, with a roughly 3.5% decline. Stocks in Europe edged higher on Friday, with the pan-European Stoxx 600 index up 0.2% at 8:25 a.m. London time. Friday is the first full trading session for major European indexes after closures over the Christmas holiday. Investors were reacting to disappointing economic data out of China, with official figures showing industrial profits in the world's second biggest economy contracted for the fourth consecutive month in November . Mining stocks were among those in negative territory, while autos and healthcare stocks led gains. — Chloe Taylor The S&P 500 is likely to end next year near 7000, or nearly 16% above where the index closed Thursday, according to a forecast reiterated by Capital Economics chief markets economist John Higgins between last week's Fed meeting and Christmas. The London-based researcher is sticking with the projection even though "we think Fed policy will be a bit less accommodative than we had previously projected," and a selloff in bonds drove last week's weakness in stocks. The sanguine view is based on a belief that "the 10-year TIPS yield – which is typically used as a proxy for this risk-free component because equities are 'real' assets – won't end next year higher than it is now," Higgins wrote. "What's more, we still aren't expecting a major deficit-financed fiscal expansion in the U.S. that could bring out the bond vigilantes and drive up Treasury term premia substantially from still-low levels by the standards of the past," Capital Economics said. In addition, forward 12-months earnings per share for the S&P 500 "will continue to grow a bit next year." — Scott Schnipper Stock futures were marginally lower Thursday evening shortly after 6 p.m. ET. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 22 points, hovering just below flat. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures each dipped less than 0.1%. The three major U.S. indexes have posted strong gains during this holiday-shortened trading week. — Pia Singh
