Late-night hosts Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, and others, along with the usual anti-Trump suspects at NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” were unsuccessful in using their platforms to sway voters away from boosting Trump to a decisive victory in November. Some even raised millions of dollars for Trump’s Democratic opponents, and it didn’t amount to much. The importance of their anti-Trump media barrage was so frustrating for these comedians after Election Day that some resorted to curses and even shedding tears on air. According to a recent study from the media watchdog group Media Research Center, nearly all the political jokes told on each of the five major TV late-night shows at the height of the presidential campaign were anti-Trump. These shows included Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” CBS’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” and NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” The study, published late October, found that out of the 1,463 jokes about both Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris on these five shows from September 3 through October 25, 1,428 of the jokes were targeted at Donald Trump. As MRC analyst Alex Christy noted in his report, “That’s a whopping 40:1 ratio or almost 98 percent to 2 percent.” Even some of the rare anti-Democratic jokes appeared to be softened by hosts. Back when President Biden was still the party’s nominee, NBC’s Meyers tempered a joke about Biden’s age with a disclaimer about Trump’s criminality. “As we made clear on this show repeatedly, there’s no equivalency between a competent 81-year-old who occasionally shows signs of age and a demented 77-year-old criminal who says dead people rigged the election and thinks electric boat batteries will lead to shark attacks,” he said in June. When asked why this anti-Trump offensive didn’t sway the election for Harris, executive editor of MRC Newsbusters, Tim Graham, told Fox News Digital that these hosts were just preaching to the anti-Trump choir and not changing minds. “The so-called comedians on the late-night shows were never going to harm Trump because their audiences are fully stocked with Trump-hating Democrats who want their fix of Trump hatred,” Graham said, adding, “Colbert and Kimmel and the rest sound more like Democrat Senators more than people hired to make you laugh.” The executive editor provided an example of Kimmel bringing out his wife, Molly McNearney, during the Sept. 25 episode of his show to advise Trump to “shut up and go away.” “Go to Mar-a-Lago, spend all day, every day, cheating at golf and masturbating to Newsmax, and let a competent woman take over. That’s my advice. That’s my advice. Thanks for listening,” she said. Throughout the campaign, the longtime sketch show “Saturday Night Live” continued their routine digs at the GOP candidate. In one sketch that took heat from the Trump campaign, the show made light of the assassination attempts against Trump, featuring its Trump impressionist insisting that people love his rallies except when people shoot at them. The line was played for laughs, however, the Trump campaign account called it “disgusting.” The sketch series also got into hot water for having Harris participate in a sketch less than a week ahead of the election. People slammed the vice president and the NBC series for organizing the appearance and not having Trump on as well. FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr accused the last-minute Harris invite of being a “clear and blatant effort to evade the FCC’s Equal Time rule,” adding, “The purpose of the rule is to avoid exactly this type of biased and partisan conduct – a licensed broadcaster using the public airwaves to exert its influence for one candidate on the eve of an election. Unless the broadcaster offered Equal Time to other qualifying campaigns.” The Trump campaign told Fox News Digital in November that no one from “SNL” reached out to them for a Trump appearance ahead of the election. In addition to the onslaught of jokes against Trump and his base, multiple late-night hosts actively campaigned and raised funds for the Democratic presidential campaign. Kimmel threw a Biden campaign fundraiser in Los Angeles last June that raised over $30 million for President Biden. Actors George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and former President Obama were among the attendees. That happened less than three months after CBS’ Stephen Colbert participated in a lavish record-setting fundraiser that brought in $26 million for the Biden campaign. Kimmel also helped compose a DNC fundraising email in September that provided links for recipients to send money to the Harris-Walz campaign. In it, he composed a message, that read, “Sorry to break your cold little heart, Donald, but I endorse Kamala Harris for president. I’ve had the privilege of interviewing our Vice President several times. She is a kind, brilliant, and delightful person who cares very much about our country.” Despite all these efforts on behalf of mainstream comedians to stop Trump, the candidate won a decisive victory over Harris on Nov. 5, prompting her late-night supporters to meltdown in response. “Well, f—. It happened again.” Colbert said during his show following Trump’s victory. “After a bizarre and vicious campaign fueled by a desperate need not to go to jail, Donald Trump has won the 2024 election.” Fallon appeared crestfallen at the election results, slamming Trump with a sarcastic dig during his show. “Yep, Trump returning to the White House is a huge, historic comeback for someone who literally never went away,” he said. Kimmel told his audience the Wednesday after Election Day, “It was a terrible night last night.” While going through a long list of how many different things Trump’s victory is “terrible” for, the ABC host became emotional and started crying. Meyers told his viewers the day after Trump’s win that something in his “brain broke a little bit last night,” and “The Daily Show” correspondent Ronny Chieng told Comedy Central viewers that if any of them are dual citizens, they need to travel to the other country because of America’s “turn towards fascism.”Listen, I know is ~technically~ supposed to be all about for your loved ones or splurging on a spendy appliance while it's at its lowest price of the year. From Boeing to bots, rebrands and the Budget – test your city wits with our fiendish festive financial quizCountry Christmas traditions from back in the daySaquon Barkley has become the Shohei Ohtani of the NFL. There's no better home run hitter playing football right now. Barkley had touchdown runs of 72 and 70 yards for the Philadelphia Eagles in a 37-20 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night. He now has five runs of 50-plus yards this season and is on pace to break Eric Dickerson's single-season record of 2,105 yards set in 1984. Barkley's historic performance against the Rams — his 255 yards set a team record — captivated a national audience and turned him into a fan favorite for the AP NFL MVP award. He's not the betting favorite, however. Josh Allen has the best odds at plus-150, according to Bet MGM Sportsbook. Two-time MVP Lamar Jackson is next at plus-250 followed by Barkley at plus-400. Running backs have won the award 18 times, including three-time winner Jim Brown, who was the AP's first NFL MVP in 1957. Quarterbacks have dominated the award, winning it 45 times. Only three players who weren't QBs or RBs have been MVP. It takes a special season for a non-QB to win it mainly because the offense goes through the signal caller. Quarterbacks handle the ball every offensive snap, run the show and get the credit when things go well and the blame when it doesn't. Adrian Peterson was the most recent non-QB to win it when he ran for 2,097 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Minnesota Vikings in 2012. Playing for a winning team matters, too. Nine of the past 11 winners played for a No. 1 seed with the other two winners on a No. 2 seed. The Vikings earned the sixth seed when Pederson was MVP. Barkley is a major reason why the Eagles (9-2) are leading the NFC East and only trail Detroit (10-1) by one game for the top spot in the conference. Does he have a realistic chance to win the MVP award? Kicker Mark Moseley was the MVP in the strike-shortened 1982 season when he made 20 of 21 field goals and 16 of 19 extra points in nine games for Washington. If voters once selected a kicker, everyone has a chance, especially a game-changer such as Barkley. Defensive tackle Alan Page was the MVP in 1971 and linebacker Lawrence Taylor won it in 1986. Running back Christian McCaffrey finished third in voting last year and wide receiver Justin Jefferson placed fifth in 2022. The Offensive Player of the Year award and Defensive Player of the Year award recognize the best all-around players on both sides of the ball, allowing voters to recognize non-QBs if they choose. Wide receivers and running backs have won the AP OPOY award seven times over the past 11 seasons. McCaffrey was the 2023 winner. The AP's new voting format introduced in 2022 also gives non-QBs a better opportunity to get MVP recognition. Voter submit their top five picks for each award, with a weighted point system. Previously, voters made one choice for each award. A nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league vote for MVP and seven other awards. The awards are based on regular-season performance. The Chiefs (10-1) and Bills (9-2) already are in position to lock up postseason berths right after Thanksgiving. Kansas City clinches a playoff berth with a win over Las Vegas on Black Friday and a loss by Miami on Thursday night, or a win plus a loss by Denver on Monday night. Buffalo can wrap up a fifth straight AFC East title with a victory over San Francisco on Sunday and a loss by the Dolphins. It's not a given that the Dallas Cowboys will be looking for a new head coach after this season. Owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday on local radio that Mike McCarthy could end up getting a contract extension. "I don't think that's crazy at all. This is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has been there and done that. He has great ideas. We got a lot of football left," Jones said. McCarthy led the Cowboys (4-7) to three straight 12-win seasons, but they went 1-3 in the playoffs and haven't reached the NFC championship game since winning the Super Bowl 29 years ago. Injuries have contributed to the team's struggles this season, but Dallas was just 3-5 before Dak Prescott was lost for the rest of the season. The Cowboys upset Washington last week and their next four games are against teams that currently have losing records. If they somehow end up 9-8 or even 8-9, Jones could make a case for keeping McCarthy. Be the first to know Get local news delivered to your inbox!

Congress Parliamentary Party chief Sonia Gandhi on Friday described former prime minister Manmohan Singh ’s death as a “deeply personal loss,” calling him her “friend, philosopher and guide” who transformed India with his wisdom and compassion. The tribute came as the Congress Working Committee (CWC) convened a special meeting to mourn the passing of the party’s only Prime Minister outside the Nehru-Gandhi family to complete two full terms in office. “In Dr Manmohan Singh’s passing, we have lost a leader who was the epitome of wisdom, nobility and humility, who served our country with all his heart and mind. A luminous and beloved guiding light for the Congress party, his compassion and vision transformed and empowered the lives of millions of Indians,” said Gandhi, who had backed Singh for the prime minister’s post in 2004 after declining to take the position herself. Highlighting Singh’s far-reaching impact across the political spectrum, Gandhi emphasised his unique ability to bridge divides. “He was loved by the people of India for his pure heart and fine mind. His advice, wise counsel and views were eagerly sought and deeply valued across the political spectrum in our country. Respected and admired by leaders and scholars all over the world, he was hailed as a statesman of immense wisdom and stature,” she added. The timing of Singh’s death created a poignant contrast for the Congress party —the CWC had met just 24 hours earlier in Belagavi to mark the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s appointment as Congress president and to plan a major campaign against the BJP. The mood shifted dramatically as the committee reconvened to honour Singh’s memory on Friday. Gandhi’s tribute captured the personal dimension of Singh’s leadership. “He was so gentle in his manner but so resolute in his deeply held convictions. His commitment to social justice, secularism, and democratic values was deep and unwavering,” she said, adding that spending time with him meant “coming away enlightened by his knowledge and sagacity, moved by his honesty and integrity, and awed by his genuine humility”. “He leaves a void in our national life that can never be filled,” Gandhi concluded in her emotional tribute. “We in the Congress Party, and the people of India will forever be proud and grateful that we had a leader like Dr Manmohan Singh whose contributions to India’s progress and development are immeasurable.” Earlier in the day, Gandhi, along with party general secretary KC Venugopal and others, paid their last respects to Singh at his official residence. In a comprehensive resolution, CWC traced Singh’s journey from an economist to the architect of India’s economic liberalisation. “ With unmatched foresight, he initiated a series of reforms that not only saved the nation from a balance-of-payments crisis but also opened the doors to global markets. Through his policies of deregulation, privatisation, and the encouragement of foreign investment, he laid the foundation for India’s rapid economic growth,” the resolution stated. The committee highlighted Singh’s decade-long tenure as Prime Minister, noting that “he led the country with a sense of calm determination and exceptional wisdom.” The resolution detailed Singh’s numerous landmark initiatives, including the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), Right to Education, the historic Indo-US Civil Nuclear Deal, National Food Security Act, and the Land Acquisition Act. CWC also highlighted his contribution to social justice through the 93rd Constitutional Amendment, which advanced opportunities for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and OBCs through Article 15(5).

(AP Photo/Stephanie Scarbrough) PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens was a full participant in practice on Monday, opening the door for him to return from a three-game absence on Wednesday when Pittsburgh hosts the Kansas City Chiefs. Pickens hasn't played since tweaking his hamstring earlier this month. The Steelers (10-5) have struggled to generate much in their passing game with their leading receiver watching from the sideline in sweatpants. Though Monday's practice was a walkthrough, Pickens said he felt good and hopes he'll be able to face the two-time defending Super Bowl champions. The 23-year-old was going through post-practice drills on Dec. 6 when he felt his hamstring tighten up, forcing him to miss the first games of his three-year career. Pittsburgh has gone 1-2 in his absence, including back-to-back losses to Philadelphia and Baltimore in which Russell Wilson passed for just 345 yards while missing one of the NFL's top downfield threats. Wilson is encouraged by the way the sometimes mercurial Pickens — who has been flagged and fined multiple times this season for infractions ranging from facemasks to unsportsmanlike conduct — has remained engaged. “He’s been great in the midst of his little trial here over the past few weeks,” Wilson said. “And so we’re excited to have him back if that’s the case fully and let him do his thing.” Safety DeShon Elliott (hamstring) and defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi (groin) were also listed as full participants on Tuesday. Neither veteran has played since getting hurt against Cleveland on Dec. 8. While Pickens, Elliott and Ogunjobi could be available as Pittsburgh tries to hold off Baltimore for the AFC North lead, cornerback Joey Porter (knee) and WR Ben Skowronek (hip) are likely out after missing practice for a second straight day. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl The Associated Press See a typo/mistake? The leaders of the Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, Revolutionary Socialist Party and All India Forward Bloc on Monday demanded resignation of Union home minister Amit Shah over his remarks on B.R. Ambedkar in Parliament last week. In a statement, issued after a meeting of coordinator of the CPI(M) politburo Prakash Karat, CPI general secretary D. Raja, CPI(ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, RSP general secretary Manoj Bhattacharya and AIFB general secretary G. Devarajan, the Left leaders also opposed “one nation, one election” (ONOE), and said they would conduct a nationwide campaign against it. The parties also decided to step-up Left intervention on political and people’s issues. The Left parties also demanded the withdrawal of the amendment to the “conduct of election rules”, whereby the right of public inspection of electronic documents such as CCTV camera and video footage is annulled. “The meeting noted that consequent to the disrespectful and derogatory comments on Dr B.R. Ambedkar by Shah in the Rajya Sabha, there has been widespread anger and protests across the country,” the statement said.Stunning rally in Big Tech drives Nasdaq to 20,000
Saquon Barkley has become the Shohei Ohtani of the NFL. Get local news delivered to your inbox!
La Crosse community rallies behind single mother, saves homeThe Liberal government is pulling out the federal wallet to put more money into people's pockets over the holidays , but its recently announced affordability measures create winners and losers. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday that the federal government will remove the goods and services tax on a slew of items for two months, starting Dec. 14. But in provinces where the provincial and federal sales taxes are blended together into a harmonized sales tax, Canadians will get a larger break. The federal government also plans to send $250 cheques to Canadians who were working in 2023 and earned up to $150,000. That means Canadians who were not working in 2023, including those who were receiving social assistance or were in retirement, will not be sent a cheque in April. Trudeau says the federal government has already stepped up to help the most vulnerable Canadians and that it is now time to give a hand to workers. __ This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 22, 2024.
With the debut of the new Precision Agricultural program, Flint Hills Technical College anticipates the new program will fill a hole in technical agricultural education in Emporia. The new Precision Agriculture program would have taken longer to debut, according to Kim Dhority, Dean of Academic Affairs, without the $672,288 grant recently obtained from the Patterson Family Foundation. The Patterson Family Foundation is a Kansas City nonprofit that focuses on investing in rural communities through monetary support. They reached out with interest to FHTC concerning their new Precision Agriculture program and CDL license training, and FHTC submitted a grant proposal outlining all new equipment and ideas for the program. To Dhority’s surprise, FHTC was approved for every one of their proposed ideas. Dhority said, “We basically got everything that we needed. It was pretty exciting when we heard back because we figured they would cut some things out and they didn’t.” Precision Agriculture is a relatively new field in agricultural education. It focuses on more technology-centric aspects of farming, such as crop science, analyzing data, and working with a GPS system. “Precision agriculture is dealing more with the GPS systems that are included in modern day equipment,” Dhority said. “Back when my dad bought a tractor, that was not even considered.” Dhority said that FHTC first became aware of a need for more advanced agricultural education during an agricultural summit hosted in Emporia several years ago. Many of Kansas’ leading agricultural experts and farmers attended and were surprised that FHTC did not teach an agricultural program. According to Dhority, “It was a matter of research to find out, ‘What do we need to include in this?” FHTC’s Precision Agriculture program will launch in August of 2025. Dhority said that the college plans to eventually dedicate a separate space for the program, but for now it will be hosted in currently unused classrooms. FHTC is considering land in several places for a new building, including land next west of its Southern Campus 3701 W 6th Ave. No plans have been finalized yet. Precision Agriculture’s plan sent to the Patterson Family Foundation outlined the use for a greenhouse to study crop science. The greenhouse will be funded through the grant, and Dhority wants to hold off on finalizing details of the greenhouse until an instructor is hired. Dhority said, “It’s going to be their program. Let them be part of that process and that person will spend this Spring semester working on those kinds of things, working on finalizing curriculum, what equipment we want to purchase, having that all in place.” FHTC is currently on the hunt for a Precision Agriculture Instructor and hopes to fill the role by the beginning of January. The only requirements for the job are an Associate’s Degree and at least two years of related job experience in an agricultural field. Dhority stated, “We like people to be dynamic, so it’s not just going to be ‘come in and here’s your curriculum,’ and you teach it. They’re going to be responsible for that curriculum.” The program offers two possible routes - a one-year certificate and an Associate’s. The incoming class will be capped at 20 students, a relatively normal amount for FHTC. Dhority believes a wide variety of students will be interested in enrolling due to the program’s focus on both agriculture and technology. “As we get going and we start talking about some of the technical side of things, we're going to see some of those people that maybe are computer programmers or network type students that are going to go, ‘Wait a minute, this is the route that I want to go down,” Dhority said. The Precision Agriculture program was approved by the Kansas Board of Regents but has yet to be approved by the Higher Learning Commission, which accredits most colleges in the U.S. An accreditation with HLC would allow FHTC to provide financial aid to students in that program and let students transfer into other programs. Once approval is granted, the proposed program must then be approved by the Federal Department of Education. According to Dhority, many farmers in the area volunteered their equipment to be used for class assignments and offered students the chance to test out their skills by working on their farms. FHTC excels in offering their students opportunities to learn in a hands-on environment and sees this as a way to give back to the community. “We kept hearing from business and industry, ‘Why didn't we have an agricultural program? Why don't we have an agricultural program? Why is there no agriculture?” Dhority said. “If you look at our surrounding area, we are an agricultural community. That’s what pushed us to go in this direction. My hope is that we have other programs that come out of this program.”
