At least 34 people have been killed by Cyclone Chido in Mozambique since it made landfall there on Sunday, the UN humanitarian agency OCHA said on Tuesday, citing figures from the southern African country's disaster agency. CES 2025 is looming around the corner, and while the annual tech show is usually full of high-tech goodies, this year is going to be especially important for gamers. Nvidia’s Jensen Huang is hosting the big CES keynote this year, so you can expect Team Green to be going big. Likewise, we haven’t seen new graphics cards from AMD, so it’s a very strong possibility that CES is going to usher in an entirely new generation of graphics hardware . CES 2025 officially kicks off on January 7, 2025. However, the real show starts a day earlier, on January 6, when Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang takes the stage for the CES 2025 keynote at 6:30pm PST. CES 2025 will wrap up around January 10. We expect announcements to happen throughout the week, as the hundreds of tech companies all vie for attention. Companies like Intel, AMD, Samsung and Sony all have their own keynotes scheduled, likely brimming with announcements of their own. There’s going to be a lot of stuff. CES, or the Consumer Electronics Show, is an annual tech convention, where tech companies big and small show off concepts and new products for the new year. Unlike some other trade shows, a big part of CES has always been concepts that give a glimpse into the future, rather than just the products we’ll see at our local Best Buy later in the year – though the latter is still a huge part of the show. You can expect everything from gaming laptops to flying cars to make an appearance at CES, though this year we suspect the former is going to be the star of the show. While CES usually has a wide variety of technology on offer, and likely will this year too, the thing we’re most interested in is new GPUs. After all, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang is hosting the big keynote that kicks the event off, and I couldn’t imagine Team Green not taking that opportunity to announce something big. We’re overdue for new graphics cards anyway. Typically, new graphics cards – both from AMD and Nvidia – release on a roughly two-year cycle. Given that the RTX 4090 launched in October 2022 and the Radeon RX 7900 XTX launched in December of the same year, we’re officially overdue for a new generation of graphics cards. It doesn’t hurt that Intel beat both of these companies to the punch with its new graphics card, the Intel Arc B580, either. With the Intel card already out in the wild, and with the company’s disappointing Core Ultra 200S processors already out, it’s less clear what Intel will have to bring to the table. After all, we’re still waiting for Alienware to make its Concept UFO from CES 2020 a reality. Given that it’s been 4 years, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it make an appearance. Beyond PC gaming, though, Sony and Samsung both have major press conferences at the show. While it’s exciting to see Sony at the show, it’s likely that the company is going to focus primarily on their non-gaming segments – think TVs, audio, etc. Likewise, I don’t expect Samsung to announce new phones at the show, though with the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra being nearly a year old at this point, we could be surprised. Like any year, though, there’s no way to predict everything that will be at the show. Carcinogens are substances that can promote cancer development by damaging DNA and causing mutations in cells. Common environmental carcinogens include asbestos, radon, benzene, and certain pesticides. Occupational exposure to these carcinogens in industries such as construction, mining, and manufacturing can pose a significant risk to workers' health.
Imagine you and a few friends are winding down, relaxing around a campfire outside your homes. Sounds peaceful, right? I’m sure many of us have probably experienced something similar. But for some people, this is their reality: Cops pull up and tell everyone to disperse or else they will be searched or possibly arrested. This is the truth behind broken-windows policing. Broken windows is an antiquated type of discretionary policing that legally allows for the disproportionate discrimination and criminalization of minorities, specifically African Americans and the poor. This method should be completely put to rest as scholars have proved that it does not achieve its intended purpose, further marginalizes minorities and is unfruitful for all parties involved. Broken-windows policing was first proposed in 1982 by George Kelling and James Wilson as a solution to prevent serious crime by cracking down on minor crimes and maintaining order. With this tactic comes the discretionary process of deciding what “order” looks like, creating a space to push racialized agendas. With this type of discretionary policing, we can understand how we’ve seen a 700% increase in incarceration from 1972 to 2009, as the Sentencing Project has . It’s not to say that broken-window policing is the primary suspect for this exponential increase, but it is part of a cornucopia of practices like it that comprise what we call our criminal justice system. This policing method led to the implementation of “stop and frisk” searches, which only created further animosity and fractured the bond of trust between the community and law enforcement. Engendering distrust and a weary attitude toward police only leads to more violent crime. The Sentencing Project that in 1970, 30% of prisoners were convicted for a violent crime; in 2022 that percentage rose to 63%. Although broken windows is presented as a way to crack down on crime, and maintain order, it has only further exacerbated the issue. Historically, broken-windows policing has deepened the marginalization of already disadvantaged communities by enabling law enforcement to disproportionately target people of color and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. This approach, which grants police broad discretion to patrol, search and arrest individuals in these communities, raises important questions about its fairness: If minor crimes and disorder are prevalent across all neighborhoods, why is this policing strategy predominantly applied to minority areas? Furthermore, broken-windows policing can be linked to the historical legacy of the Black Codes — laws implemented following the abolition of slavery that systematically restricted the rights and freedoms of African Americans, particularly with regard to their mobility and autonomy. In cities like Baltimore, broken-windows policing has led to the criminalization of behaviors such as “strolling while poor” or “driving while Black.” Not only do these practices reflect the same racial biases embedded within the Black Codes, but they perpetuate a contemporary system of racial control that contributes to what activist Michelle Alexander calls the “New Jim Crow” within the criminal justice system. Broken-windows policing is not just costly for the millions of minorities it affects every year but economically and practically harmful to society at large. This approach to crime erodes trust between law enforcement and communities, requiring additional resources and manpower to manage the increased volume of arrests, paperwork, judicial proceedings and corrections staff. Incarcerating one individual in Maryland costs approximately $14,000 annually, according to . Given the unnecessary arrests driven by broken-windows policing, the financial burden on taxpayers is substantial. This method is both impractical and costly, rendering its continued use indefensible. Eliminating this biased, discretionary, unethical and unproductive policing practice would bring us one step closer to reforming the many backward aspects of America’s criminal justice system. Although advocates for broken windows may argue that it improves the quality of the community and creates a safer space, it has historically and statistically proved that it fails to accomplish those aims. So, the next time you engage in a casual mundane activity, such as a bonfire, in your community — think about how that same practice may be criminalized for someone else.
The Kimberley Curling Club (KCC) hosted the 2025 Safetek Profire BC U18 Curling Championships from Dec. 19 to 23. "We were thrilled with how everything went," said KCC general manager Blair Jarvis. "We knew that most teams were travelling a long way to get here and unfortunately they had to deal with some adventures with the snow we had last Wednesday. "We wanted to make sure that we gave them an experience that they would remember, so we spent a lot of time on the ice, we wanted to give them a great social experience off the ice as well and we heard from a number of curlers that it was the most U18 event that they’ve attended and so we’re really proud of that fact." The event had 12 teams competing on the Boys' side and seven Girls teams. On the Boys side of the competition, Team Jaeger out of Kelowna beat out Team Hrynew in the finals and for the Girls, Team Arndt from Vernon beat out Team Rempel to win the gold. With these wins, Team Jaeger has earned a spot at the Canadian Under-18 Curling Championships, which will be held at the Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon, Sask. from Feb. 16-22, 2025. Teams Arndt and Rempel will both be headed to the Nationals. Team Jaeger was made up of coaches Tyler Jaeger and Travis Wielgosz, Lead Brendan Hruschak, Second Noel Wielgosz, Third Spencer Rempel and Skip Owen Jaeger. "We really worked hard this year, this year we really wanted to win," said Skip Owen Jaeger. "We put in a lot of work and it just feels really, really good to win and for all that hard work to pay off. We’re really, really excited, it’s our first National event, first U18 provincial win so we’re really excited." Team Arndt is Coach David Arndt, Lead Alicia Evans, Second Ivy Jensen, Third Bethany Evans and Skip Ava Arndt. "We’re just super excited," said Skip Ava Arndt. "It took us a couple years to get here, but the hard work payed off and we can’t believe it, I don’t think it’s sunk in yet. It’s been a lot of hard work from us and the coaches and the parents. It’s been amazing." Jarvis coached Kimberley's Team Reynolds, who went on to win bronze. "We had set a target of making the playoffs and really happy with how the boys came together," Jarvis said. "They had a couple of games with a tough start and battled back and so the resilience they showed and how they stayed positive, there were a lot of great things we can take away from that. And the bronze medal, we were just thrilled to do that. "We saw Team Jaeger on the boys side and Team Arndt on the girls side as well — if we want to get to that level next year, we have some things to work on and it’s great to see the high level of curling in this province and so I think we’ve come away very motivated as well about what we need to do to get better if we want to be a little higher on the podium next year." Jarvis extended his gratitude to the over 50 volunteers who helped out before, during and after the event, including members of the Cranbrook Curling Club. "We’ll take some of the learnings from this event and apply them to the High School Provincials at the end of February, but we’re really happy with how everything went," he said. "And this is an event for the kids, we want to make sure that they’re going to have an experience that they’ll remember, the teams that had success will obviously remember the things that happened on the ice, but for most kids it will be the experiences they had off the ice. "We had karaoke here on the one night and a bunch of teams were intermingling together and having a great time and those are the experiences that I’m going to take away from this event." Patti Caldwell was head official for the event and Jarvis said she and Ian Milligan worked tirelessly throughout the week. "Patti’s attitude is this is all for the kids and making sure that they have fun and sure it’s a competition, but it’s meant to be fun and we’re going to enjoy this," Jarvis said. "This is a sport that we can enjoy for life and so you want to make sure you’re building positive memories in every aspect." Lindsay Shannon, administrative and event manager at Curl BC, was also on hand for the event, and presented all the awards. "We would just like to thank the Kimberley Curling Club and the City of Kimberley who put on an amazing event here and welcomed all of our athletes who have performed so well," Shannon said.
