After receiving no offers coming out of high school, it only took one start for Trevelin Queen to prove he belongs on the NBA stage. The Orlando Magic have been riddled with unfortunate injuries this season. Paolo Banchero has been sidelined since late October with a torn right oblique. Coincidentally, Franz Wagner went down with the same injury in early December. Moe Wagner will be out for the rest of the season with a season-ending knee injury. The Magic started the year out with hope and optimism, but since the past week, they’ve been looking for answers offensively as it seems the team cannot catch a break. Queen had started for the first time this season, and did not disappoint for his team down the stretch. Queen came up with 17 points, three steals, a block on a three-point attempt and three assists, one of which was to the corner for a game-clinching three pointer by rookie Tristan da Silva. Against the defending champions with their backs against the wall, this might’ve been the most impressive Magic win this season so far. Cole Anthony didn’t hold back in the postgame interview when asked about Queen’s much needed performance. https://x.com/OrlandoMagic/status/1871388764796567647 “(Trevelin’s) been waiting for his moment, and he’s doing it now,” Anthony said. Queen was not just a cinderella story in the game, his performance was needed, and it will be needed for the near future if the Magic want to keep their season in tact. As someone who found poise during the game, Queen credited everyone that’s been apart of this long, patient project. “My teammates believe in me, the coaching staff believes in me, my family believes me and I believe in myself,” Queen said. Trevelin Queen’s Career Has Required Much Patience Queen has been traveling his whole life, basketball included. After not getting any offers to play college basketball out of high school in Maryland, he attended Marin, a public community college near San Francisco. For his sophomore year, he transferred to the New Mexico Military Institute. After being named to the All-Western Junior College Athletic Conference, he transferred to New Mexico State where he won the Western Athletic Conference MVP. After going undrafted in 2020, Queen spent some time with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the G League team of the Houston Rockets where he won a G League MVP along with a championship and G League Finals MVP. He bounced around but finally ended up with the Orlando Magic on a two-way contract and has had that role since 2023. There has been growing public concern over the recent weeks, about happenings in Arugam Bay (AB). This analysis adds to the discourse. Democratic states are obliged to protect all people within its borders, whether citizens or non-citizens. Non-citizens include tourists on short stays, subject to the law of the land they visit. Informed sources report that Jewish places of prayer have been set up for Israeli tourists in AB. Though few would object to people at prayer, this raises a concern. Why would tourists on short stays want this, when they can pray in their rooms? A likely answer links two possibilities. Some of these tourists are here to stay longer and have been permitted to do so. And, the authorities have turned a blind eye to the construction or designation of a Jewish place of prayer for Israelis. The stringent regulations governing the establishment of new places of prayer or worship for our own citizens, makes this favour even more puzzling. If the law has been bent to confer some Israelis with undisclosed, preferential treatment, new questions surface. Was this due to corruption in our system or external political pressure? Corruption is no doubt endemic in the system, but US reaction to two recent global initiatives by Sri Lanka, tips the balance towards the latter. The shocking entitlement to interfere in our affairs, repeatedly demonstrated by the current US Ambassador and the indissoluble marriage between the US and her proxy Israel, add weight to the swing. A sudden, even controversial, travel advisory issued to her citizens by the US (promptly repeated by some of its allies), came soon after Sri Lanka signed a UN resolution along with 123 other nations, demanding that Israel end its unlawful occupation of Palestinian territory, within 12 months. Sri Lanka had also around this time, applied for and gained a level of interim membership with BRICS, not the best friend of the US and her allies. Given the sequence of these incidents, the travel advisory could be seen as a warning; a nudge. Unless we behave; cooperate with US foreign policy, which coddles Israel, our gradually improving tourist industry will suffer another set-back. There is a lesson here. Nations hit by economic bankruptcy like Sri Lanka, are prone to sell their sovereignty, in exchange for pseudo, dressed up, stability. If any, tasked to protect our own sovereignty, have been part of such hidden currents, we will have to deal with not one, but two sets of predators, to regain our independence. Some reports that IDF personnel who have been active agents of genocide in Gaza, are among the AB ‘tourists’, could turn the Israeli presence into a time bomb. Wherever and in whatever condition segments of the Israeli fighting machine are present, there the Mossad will be; gathering and hunting. One of our former governments is claimed to have bought arms from Israel and invited their personnel to train our forces during our protracted ethnic war. The Israeli agents invited over then, had ample opportunity to study our fractious ethno-political relations and explore the strategic locations on our coasts, not the least AB. This ethnic war then, brought death and untold suffering to thousands of civilians, especially Tamils. Today, our hurt and humiliated Tamil community still waits for closure. But for this to happen, the protective cordon of racist patriotism will have to be dismantled. Caught up today with a much more mysterious Israeli presence in AB, Sri Lanka should note what the whole world knows. Any who stand in the way of Israel’s policy of occupation are punished harshly. This explains ongoing genocide in Gaza, how the Secretary General of the UN was swiftly deemed persona-non grata and why the life sustaining UN agency, UNRWA, currently faces shut down. While our impending geo-political crisis is hugely complicated, an immediate step in this tough task is to review all preferential treatment of Israelis on our soil. The commendable political will demonstrated in signing the UN resolution on Israel’s occupation of Palestine, has a moral sequel. Till the genocide of the Palestinians end, Israelis who have played a part in the genocide should be on notice for prosecution wherever they go, including Sri Lanka. Drawn into deep and dangerous currents, by design or default, our best chance for a dignified nation is to look beyond party politics to our wisest legal and diplomatic minds. In the meantime we are to beware those who fly over, with bag loads of smiles, gifts and advice. They are far from the angels they pretend to be. With peace and blessings to allThe man in question, eager to make a positive change in his life, decided to sign up for the challenge and paid the hefty registration fee of $20,000. The Kansas City Chiefs picked up a road victory — but in true 2024 form, they didn’t make it easy on themselves. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes led a game-winning drive inside the last two minutes, lifting the Chiefs to a 30-27 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. The Panthers, entering the game at 3-7, tied it at 27 with a touchdown and two-point conversion with 1:46 remaining. But that was too much time for Mahomes. His biggest moment was a scramble, as he sprinted 33 yards down the sideline to the Panthers 22 with 39 seconds left to put the Chiefs into field-goal range. Recently signed kicker Spencer Shrader put through the 31-yard field goal as time expired. This one was close because of KC’s inability to stop a before-the-game struggling Carolina pass offense. The Panthers, behind previously benched QB Bryce Young, dissected the Chiefs secondary. Young completed 21 of 35 passes for 262 yards, while Carolina averaged a healthy 5.8 yards per play. KC also got almost no pass rush for a second straight week — a reason for concern as the team prepares for the season’s most important games ahead. Mahomes, meanwhile, played one of his best games of the season, completing 27 of 37 passes for 269 yards with the three scores. The Chiefs led 20-9 at halftime thanks to their efficient offense. Mahomes took advantage of his few possessions then, completing 19 of 24 passes for 207 yards before the break with a pair of touchdown passes to tight end Noah Gray. KC scored on all four drives, including a 14-play, 92-yard march late in the second quarter. Young went 10 for 18 for 177 yards before the break, as Carolina averaged 8.6 yards per pass and 7.5 yards per play. The Chiefs (10-1) will play at home against the Las Vegas Raiders at 3 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 29. ©2024 The Kansas City Star. Visit kansascity.com . Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.
