Douglas lost his job as the general manager on Tuesday, six weeks after the head coach was replaced following a 2-3 start. The Jets have gone 1-5 under interim coach Jeff Ulbrich so owner Woody Johnson sent Douglas packing. Rodgers has played more like a 40-year-old quarterback coming off an Achilles tendon injury than a four-time NFL MVP. He's expressed a desire to play another season. The big question is whether the Jets will want him back. Maybe they'll decide to take one more shot at a playoff run with Rodgers while having him mentor a rookie quarterback. Or, they could start fresh. There are significant contract ramifications either way. Rodgers is slated to make a non-guaranteed $37.5 million in 2025 with a dead cap hit of $49 million as his salary cap total goes from $17.1 million to $23.5 million. The Jets could spread the dead money over two years by releasing Rodgers with the use of post-June 1 designation. He has a no-trade clause in his contract so they would need his permission to make a deal. If Rodgers doesn't retire and New York's new regime wants a clean slate, here are potential destinations for the future first-ballot Hall of Famer: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS: This could only happen if Brock Purdy's shoulder injury is more significant than is known. Rodgers is a native of northern California and grew up a Niners fan. Returning home to help San Francisco win its sixth Super Bowl has to be attractive. MINNESOTA VIKINGS: Sam Darnold has been more than a stopgap, helping the Vikings (8-2) to an impressive start. J.J. McCarthy is the future, however, and Darnold will be a free agent after the season. If the Vikings fall short of a Super Bowl and Rodgers shows over the final six weeks that he can play championship football, this could be a fit. The Vikings could let McCarthy sit and learn for another year, especially coming off a knee injury that required a second surgery earlier this month. NEW YORK GIANTS: Rodgers wouldn't have to move. The Giants will need a quarterback after benching Daniel Jones and eventually releasing him. They could draft a quarterback in the first round and have him learn behind Rodgers for a season. That'll depend on which pick New York ends up with because it's a thin draft class. Unlike the Jets, the Giants (2-8) haven't made any coaching or GM changes yet. If it's status quo with GM Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll, one year with Rodgers isn't unrealistic. LAS VEGAS RAIDERS: They also need a quarterback. Brock Bowers could set an NFL record for most catches by a tight end if he had Rodgers next season. The Raiders (2-8) are aiming for a high pick to get a shot at a quarterback of their choice. New minority owner Tom Brady believes rookie quarterbacks need time to develop and learn. The seven-time Super Bowl champion would have to be in favor of having Rodgers start and tutor a youngster. TENNESSEE TITANS: If Will Levis doesn't prove over the final seven games that he can be a No. 1 quarterback, the Titans (2-8) will be in the QB market and likely have a high draft pick. FEARS about the bird flu are growing due to a pet food recall after a housecat died from eating a product that tested positive for the virus. An Oregon -based pet food company issued a warning about its raw frozen cat food in 12 states after the pet's death. Northwest Naturals announced they were recalling one batch of its two-pound Feline Turkey Recipe food on Tuesday after the product tested positive for the virus on Tuesday. The product is sold in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin. The people in the dead cat's household are now being closely monitored for symptoms of the bird flu strain H5N1 , but there have been no human cases linked to the pet food yet. “We are confident that this cat contracted H5N1 by eating the Northwest Naturals raw and frozen pet food,” Oregon Department of Agriculture State Veterinarian Dr. Ryan Scholz said in a news release . READ MORE RECALLS "This cat was strictly an indoor cat; it was not exposed to the virus in its environment, and results from the genome sequencing confirmed that the virus recovered from the raw pet food and infected cat were exact matches to each other.” Northwest Naturals confirmed to The U.S. Sun that no other sick pets have been reported due to the infected product. The recalled pet food is packaged in two-pound plastic bags that have expiration dates of May 21, 2026, and June 23, 2025. Officials say customers who bought the recalled food should throw it away immediately and get a refund. Oregon has had one confirmed human case of the bird flu this year, but it was spread by poultry farms and culling operations, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The person fully recovered after being mildly ill, the Oregon Health Authority confirmed last month. More than 60 people across eight states have been infected with the bird flu this year, according to the CDC. Just last week, a man in Louisiana was hospitalized with the first severe case of H5N1. The man, who is over 65 years old, likely caught the virus from sick birds in his backyard, the CDC said in a statement. The H5N1 strain of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza virus, also known as the bird flu, infected dozens of humans in 2024. As of December 26, 2024, there have been 65 confirmed total reports of humans with the bird flu. People have been exposed to the virus in the following states: California Colorado Iowa Louisiana Michigan Missouri Oregon Texas Washington Wisconsin 39 people were exposed to the virus via cattle, while 23 exposures were due to poultry farms and culling operations. One person was exposed to the virus due to his backyard flock, while the sources of two other cases were unknown. Backyard flocks can be infected by infected droppings from wild birds flying over them. Manmohan Singh did all that. And it was his political sense that helped Singh in cultivating relationships with those who exercise power, grabbing each opportunity that came his way, pushing when possible and retreating when he smelt danger, knowing the big picture always, offering that as a rationalisation while making compromises, and using the combination of understated manner, quiet humility, non-threatening persona, and sheer brilliance to be one of India’s most important post-Independence leaders. This lack of electoral success, or broader mass appeal, was widely considered his biggest weakness but it was also his biggest strength. His experience and credibility as a reformer, his track record as a man of integrity, his personal story from a village in what is now Pakistan through Punjab to Oxbridge to the Delhi School of Economics to North Block may have all been factors in Sonia Gandhi’s decision to pick him as the PM in 2004 — but, arguably, the biggest factor was that Singh did not have a mass base and he wasn’t an operator in the corridors of power and this allowed the family to trust him. Singh ran with the opportunity Gandhi provided in his first term. He politically reinvented himself from being the man who ushered in the reforms to the man who now spoke of reforms with a human face. He knew that Gandhi’s heart lay in social welfare, and perhaps resisting his own impulses, Singh presided over the passage of rights-based legislations even as he ensured robust growth rates. Strategic reset with the West Singh decided that like he would stake it all for reforms in 1991, he would stake it all for the civil nuclear deal with the US — for he saw it as not just a nuclear deal but the beginning of India’s strategic reset with the West in general and US in particular which, in turn, would help India build capabilities in a variety of domains. Singh dared the Left to withdraw support, dared Gandhi to either remove him or come on board, flirted with political operators who opened channels with Samajwadi Party, and eventually had his way, saving both the deal and the government -- a remarkable political feat. It was a combination of his past economic record, growth, inclusive social policies, tactical compromises, foreign policy projection, electoral gambits (including the farm loan waiver), the politics of “secularism” which ensured substantial Muslim consolidation that saw Singh lead Congress to its best ever performance in 2009 elections since 1984. Incidentally, the party hasn’t since improved his record. But that is when the story shifted. A challenging second term The challenges inherent in having two centres of power — 10 Janpath and what was then 7 Race Course Road; Sonia Gandhi and PM Singh — became more apparent in the second term. Suddenly, Singh began looking weak and a man who was holding the office but not exercising power. The baggage of the first term — in terms of arbitrary allocation of resources in exchange for possible benefits from cronies by members of alliance partners — came to public light. Singh began looking compromised, with his biggest asset of integrity under question. The contradictions within his own government — between the two most senior ministers; between Congress and allies; within allies — became a subject of everyday debate. And the man who was feted for having no ambition came across as someone who would tolerate anything for the sake of power, taking away his moral authority. The dip in the economy and spike in prices took away his other USP, of a credible economic manager, with the wider electorate while his government’s decision to impose policies such as retrospective taxation eroded Singh’s appeal with international capital. Singh’s inability to recognise that new forms of media, including social media, were changing how politics was conducted left his government way behind in the public sphere. His inability to manage new forms of mass mobilisation exemplified by the anti-corruption movement led by Arvind Kejriwal eroded both the government’s authority and political legitimacy. His inability to address the increasing grievances of corporate India, which had, for all of the party’s rhetoric, been a part of the Congress coalition, left him without powerful backers. And his inability to stand up to Rahul Gandhi — who tore an ordinance agreed upon by the cabinet in a direct affront to prime ministerial authority — left Singh, at the very end of his political life, appear like an almost forlorn figure. The end of a political journey All of this coincided with the rise of Narendra Modi and his political genius in combining the idea of development, the projection of strength, the subtext of Hindutva, the promise of a clean government to offer an alternative. Building that alternative involved discrediting Singh and his record entirely for the competitiveness of Indian elections leaves no space for nuance. The Bharatiya Janata Party carried out the political demolition job on Singh effectively, destroying the Congress electorally, and reshaping India by coming to power in 2014. But it won’t be a surprise if Modi himself recognises that he has built on the legacy left behind by Singh. Be it the need to deregulate sectors, reduce the overwhelming role of the State in private enterprise, and encourage and embrace the private sector or build a digital identity that could overcome the perennial challenge of welfare delivery; be it the strategic embrace of the West and the recognition that deeper ties with Washington are critical for India to develop and deal with its geopolitical challenges or the realisation that connectivity in the wider subcontinent and improvement of border infrastructure are key for security, India’s current PM and last PM have more in common that their supporters would like to admit. And in that itself lies Manmohan Singh’s finest political legacy. His 1991 reforms trusted Indian citizens over the Indian State, liberated mind sets and created unprecedented opportunities. His prime ministerial stint was a part of the post-1991 continuum where, despite their differences, all governments have sought to champion a mix of economic reforms and welfare internally and closer ties with the West while retaining strategic autonomy externally. Manmohan Singh, along with his old boss PV Narasimha Rao, his predecessor Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his successor Narendra Modi can be safely described as a part of the quartet who have shaped the India of today in more critical ways than anyone else in the last five decades. For a Sikh boy who saw the ravages of Partition and rose from nothing to lead the world’s largest democracy, it was a life lived well, lived fully, lived with dignity, and lived with tremendous public impact.

Whether they know it or not, an estimated nine million Canadians routinely share their private financial information through a process known as “screen scraping.” Under this practice, consumers relinquish their bank login details to any number of tech service providers – few of which are subject to Canadian banking regulations – granting them broad permission to harvest their financial data for use in their products and services (fintech apps or accounting software, for example). For years, major financial institutions and ambitious fintech companies alike have criticized the process. Fintech companies, especially, have been urging Ottawa to move decisively on a safer, more modern alternative – namely, a “consumer-driven banking” or “open banking” framework built on a secure application programming interface (API) to transmit confidential information. Such a framework promises to kick open the door to a new era of transparency, security and consumer control around the sharing of sensitive financial information. To be sure, it’s a door that’s already wide open in Australia, Brazil, Britain and throughout Europe, and soon will be in the United States, as all of these places have enacted varying degrees and types of open-banking frameworks in recent years. In the coming weeks, Canada is slated to finally follow suit, having pledged in its last federal budget to release its draft open-banking legislation before year-end. Many industry watchers hope and expect this would allow for the direct transmission of information to replace screen scraping, putting an end to a practice that, despite its myriad flaws, has fuelled a Canadian fintech ecosystem valued at more than US$300-billion. Recently The Logic reported that the federal government plans to go a step further, not just introducing open banking but actively cracking down on screen scraping in tandem. This dual-pronged approach is a no-brainer. This outdated and insecure method of data transmission needs to go in order to protect Canadians and our financial system, boost trust, and accelerate the adoption of open banking in Canada. But while the move to phase out screen scraping is great news, the real question is how – and how fast – Ottawa will make this transition as it rolls out open banking. Speaking at an event in Gowling WLG’s office in May, Julien Brazeau, an associate assistant deputy minister in the Finance Department and one of the architects behind Canada’s future open-banking legislation, signalled that if Ottawa goes down that path, it would be taking a thoughtful, gradual approach to phasing out screen scraping. But if this practice is indeed so fraught with privacy, cybersecurity and legal risks, why does Ottawa not insist on an outright ban from the start? There are a few important reasons for this. First, Canada’s open-banking legislation is expected to be narrow in scope initially, limited to only certain types of data – particularly those related to deposit accounts, payment products, investment products, lines of credit and mortgages. In addition, fintechs receiving these data will initially not be permitted to edit it on banks’ servers, which would prevent functionalities such as payment initiation or account creation. For products and services reliant on data or functionality outside that initial scope, pulling the screen-scraping rug out suddenly is certain to hamper innovation. It’s important, then, that Canada’s screen-scraping phase-out at least be in lockstep with the scope of open banking’s phase-in. Second, as Canada begins to cautiously test the waters of open banking, screen scraping still offers a viable safety net in the event this transition encounters unexpected challenges. For example, if newly implemented APIs are found to be vulnerable to data breaches or other security risks, screen scraping may provide a necessary temporary workaround. Finally, a very large question of accreditation looms over Ottawa’s strategy. In a preview into Canada’s consumer-driven banking strategy released as part of the federal budget, the government promised to include an accreditation process to “ensure that only those who meet certain requirements can participate in a data sharing ecosystem.” For the time being, it also ruled out tiered accreditation, which would impose varying requirements for different levels of access. Will the accreditation rules be too rigid or onerous? It remains to be seen. What is certain is that the approach to accreditation must lend itself to a strategic phase-out of screen scraping. If the compliance burden proves overbearing, it’s likely that many – particularly smaller players with fewer resources – may simply choose not to opt in, which would jeopardize the adoption of open banking in Canada. The success of open banking will ultimately depend on Ottawa’s ability to balance progress with pragmatism as it works to make screen scraping an obsolete practice.
