The panel said that the legislation is an important and necessary step to protect children. Scanlan and Marshall, a host with the American Principles Project, were on the panel alongside U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala.; U.S. Rep. Mary Miller, R-Ill.; Terry Schilling, president of the American Principles Project; and Sarah Parshall Perry, senior legal fellow at the Heritage Foundation. “We all know by now that so-called gender affirming care is anything but caring,” Tuberville said. “It is pure insanity and has caused irreversible damage to countless children. This isn’t about politics, this is about good and evil.” Scanlan is an ambassador for Independent Women's Voice and a former collegiate swimmer at the University of Pennsylvania. Swimming for the Quakers, she and teammates endured being not only on the same team but in the same locker room as a swimmer who for the first three years swam on the men's team. “I was a swimmer at the University of Pennsylvania and the administration, the university and the NCAA said , ‘Here's a man who wants to swim on your team, please accept him,’” she explained during the panel. “This entire situation really made all female athletes feel isolated and alone, and like they know where to go.” Scanlan said that it wasn’t just competing that isolated the female athletes. “Eighteen times per week, my teammates and I were forced to undress next to a 6-foot-4, fully-intact male,” Scanlan said. “As a female athlete, this was just something I couldn't even imagine. It was something I never imagined would happen to me when I went off to college.” The STOP Act is one of a few beginnings. U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., has proposed legislation seeking to protect women’s spaces on all federal property nationwide. This would include bathrooms, locker rooms and prisons. Scanlan said this shows that public opinion is on the side of her and the panel. “This is really the first time we're seeing more of these people in power stepping up and actually doing the right thing and saying enough is enough” she said. “Now, we are looking at entire teams that are feeling empowered to be able to boycott ... or object to competing against males. It's widespread.” A notable case of that is San Jose State, where Blaire Fleming's participation has led to seven opponents forfeiting rather than playing a women's team that includes a man saying he is a woman. U.S. markets will be closed Wednesday for Christmas. Wall Street has several economic reports to look forward to this week, including a weekly update on unemployment benefits on Thursday.
1. Is it ok to assume Liverpool are there for the long run now? Five games, five wins in the Champions League under Arne Slot. Top of the table at home, by eight points, and in Europe by two. A victory over Real Madrid for the first time in 15 years, a stunning penalty save from Caoimhin Kelleher (against Kylian Mbappe of all people) - and nobody talking about Jurgen Klopp anymore. Could things get any better for Liverpool? This was a night when the Merseyside giants proved they are serious Champions League contenders for 2025, and well ahead of schedule in their development under a new manager. But Curtis Jones was also excellent in midfield, outshining Jude Bellingham, as was young Conor Bradley, standing in for Trent Alexander-Arnold at full-back. The team mixed Klopp-style intensity and pressing with a calm and attractive playing style when on the ball; a wonderful mix that is being developed far more quickly than anyone could have predicted. This Liverpool team is already looking the real deal. 2. Where does this result leave Carlo Ancelotti? It seems almost crazy to talk about legendary manager Carlo Ancelotti being under pressure given everything he has achieved with the La Liga giants in his latest spell – which began with a Champions League Final victory over Liverpool in 2022. But when you are behind Barcelona in La Liga and 24th in the Champions League table, tongues start to wag. Ancelotti's trophy haul since 2021 has included two La Liga titles, two Champions Leagues, two Supercopa de Espana, one Copa del Rey, two UEFA Super Cups and a FIFA Club World Cup. But recent form, despite bringing in Mbappe in the summer, has left the Italian in trouble, especially as it has included heavy home defeats against Barca in La Liga and AC Milan in Europe. Recent reports suggested Xabi Alonso is being considered as a possible replacement, and although Ancelotti has since insisted any issues with the board have since been resolved, this result – and performance - could bring the rumours back into focus. At any other club in the world you would read the stories, raise an eyebrow and ignore it. But Real, and Florentino Perez, have a history of making big decisions about the removal of popular and successful managers. So, although Ancelotti has a contract until 2026, there are still plenty of pundits predicting he may not last the distance. Defeat at Anfield, and an underwhelming performance in which Mbappe once again failed to impress, not least when seeing his penalty saved by Kelleher, will heighten the tension. Los Blancos have put everything into signing the former PSG star, and they can not afford for him to fail. Real are now sit in the very last play-off place in the Champions League – and in danger of missing out on qualification all together. So don't rule anything out. 3. How does this result shape Sunday’s big game for Liverpool against Manchester City? With Liverpool sitting eight points clear of nearest rivals City after only 11 games, Sunday’s clash between the two has huge significance – and their performance against Real will leave Arne Slot’s men as strong favourites. The fixture becomes even bigger when you consider City’s run of six matches without a victory all competitions – the longest in Pep Guardiola’s managerial career. It’s a run that include a 4-0 home humbling by Spurs as well as Premier League defeats at Bournemouth and Brighton, a 4-1 reverse at Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League, and a last-16 defeat at Tottenham in the League Cup. City also threw away a three-goal lead, at home, against Feyenoord in midweek to draw 3-3, leaving them 17th in the Champions League table after tonight’s results. It would be typical Guardiola to lead his team back to form with victory at Anfield, but that looks a long, long shot given the style and substance of Liverpool’s performance in Europe. The only cloud was a late injury to influential Ibrahima Konate, one of Liverpool’s players of the season so far, who appeared to hobble off the pitch with only three days to go until City arrive on Merseyside.

As I’m sure many of us can relate, “brain rot” is a term related to consuming excessive amounts of low-quality online content, especially on social media. The actual definition is “the supposed deterioration of a person's mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging.” It’s a word – not technically a word, actually two words – first used by author Henry David Thoreau in 1854 in his book Walden . Brain rot speaks to both the addictive and irresistible popularity of social media, as well as what it does to our cognitive abilities. It can also refer to the content itself. “It demonstrates a somewhat cheeky self-awareness in the younger generations about the harmful impact of the social media that they’ve inherited,” Casper Grathwohl, president, Oxford Languages, said in a news release. Last year’s winning word was “rizz,” which means romantic appeal or charm, and is an online evolution of the word charisma. If you hadn’t noticed yet, clearly the internet is taking over our lives. This year, there were six contenders for word of the year including demure, slop, dynamic pricing, romantasy, and lore. Demure was also related to social media because it was part of a sarcastic online trend where women would say “very mindful, very demure,” in situations that were not really so. Slop — a word I had never heard in this context — also relates to technology. Oxford University Press defines it as “art, writing, or other content generated using artificial intelligence, shared and distributed online in an indiscriminate or intrusive way, and characterized as being of low quality, inauthentic, or inaccurate.” Oh boy, there’s a lot of slop out there. I think we’ve all recently seen the effects of dynamic pricing, the fourth-word candidate for this year, with this weekend’s Taylor Swift concerts and their effect on hotel and Airbnb accommodations, and Uber and Lyft ride-sharing. Dynamic pricing is when the pricing changes, very quickly, based on demand, something that only became possible with the rise of the internet. The fifth contender was lore – the background information necessary to understand someone or something. As a journalist, I’m a big fan of lore, specifically trying to keep it truthful and accurate. The final word is romantasy, which is a book genre combining romance and fantasy, also a word that arose out of BookTok, a subspace of TikTok, another social media application. All these words reflect a growing trend of words emerging first on social media and then being used offline, in real life. Social media shows no signs of fading from our daily life. On the contrary, a survey conducted by Leger DGTL , a digital agency that combines research and marketing, found that 63 per cent of Canadians use Facebook at least once a day. Among people with a Facebook account between the ages of 16 and 24, the prime use of Facebook is to search for people or accounts, for people between the ages of 25 and 44, the prime use is to buy or to sell something and for those older than 45, the prime use is to interact with people and content. That’s just Facebook, an older social media, that isn’t super popular among young people. For people aged 16 to 24, Instagram is the one platform they would keep if they could only keep one, the survey found. Other interesting tidbits: people use TikTok to learn things, like cooking or repairs, while YouTube is used both for simple entertainment and for learning how to do things. The survey was conducted among 4,004 respondents, online – of course – among the general population between Aug. 5 and 17, 2024. Meanwhile, Australia has banned social media use for anyone under the age of 16, in a bid to increase online safety. Personally, I think that like everything else, it’s all about balance. Managing a healthy use of social media means setting boundaries for yourself and others in terms of your use and how much of your life you want to share. There have been noted tragic examples of the ruin the internet can bring, such as the story of Amanda Todd , a teenage girl who took her own life after being sexually extorted online. In addition, social media companies are owned by billionaires or foreign countries – we need to be careful about the information we share with them and how much control we give them over our lives. Over this coming holiday, I’m going to try to limit social media and the associated brain rot, in favour of spending time talking and laughing with family, playing games, eating delicious foods and getting as cozy as possible. Several members of Donald Trump's incoming US administration have received threats including bomb alerts, the FBI said Wednesday, with one nominee reporting a pipe-bomb scare sent with a pro-Palestinian message. The President-elect's picks for UN ambassador and head of the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as his former choice to be US attorney general, said they were among those who had received the threats. "The FBI is aware of numerous bomb threats and swatting incidents targeting incoming administration nominees and appointees, and we are working with our law enforcement partners," the agency said in a statement. Lee Zeldin, Trump's pick to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, said his home was targeted with a pipe bomb threat sent with a "pro-Palestinian themed message." The former congressman from New York said he and his family were not home at the time. Matt Gaetz, who dropped out as Trump's pick to be attorney general after facing opposition over sexual misconduct allegations, reposted Zeldin's message on X and said: "Same." Scott Turner, the nomine for Housing Secretary and a retired NFL player, and Trump's pick for Labor Secretary, meanwhile also said they had also received bomb threats at their homes. Fox News Digital quoted unidentified sources saying that John Ratcliffe, Trump's nominee to head the CIA, and Pete Hegseth, the defense secretary pick, were additionally targeted. Sylvania Mowers hasn't changed since Gary, who was a qualified auto electrician, took over the business from his father-in-law, who opened the shop in the 1970s. What appears to customers as a huge jumble of mowers, whipper snippers, leaf blowers and other garden equipment is to Gary a well-ordered delivery line. He gets through "70-80 jobs a week", which trade reps find difficult to comprehend. "When people drop them in, I get their name their phone number and put a date on it," Gary said. "There's pretty much an order here. I know this pile needs to be done, that pile needs to be done...I just keep on going." Gary said his approach to the appearance of his shop had always been, "If it ain't broke don't fix it". "I've put new flooring down, it gets wrecked. Everyone is bringing their mowers in, they are all dirty, oil leaks everywhere... It just works, people have been happy, I'm happy." Gary has never had to worry about marketing. "It's all word of mouth," he said. The phone number on the front of the shop tells a story. When phone numbers went to eight numbers, he simply wrote 9 in front of the old one. "There will be no shop like mine, ever," he said. "It's a great business if someone was willing to take it on. But, there's no one willing to do that, there are no young ones coming through.
