Unocoin Exchange Lists Morpheus' MOR As Part of Wider AI EmbraceVast Updates Shareholders at Annual General Meeting on Significant Progress Towards Delivering ...Key Syria rebel, Murhaf Abu Qasra becomes defence minister in interim govt DAMASCUS: Syria’s new rulers have appointed Murhaf Abu Qasra, a leading figure in the insurgency which toppled Bashar al-Assad, as defence minister in the interim government, an official source said on Saturday. Abu Qasra, who is also known by the nom de guerre Abu Hassan 600, is a senior figure in the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group which led the campaign that ousted Assad this month. He led numerous military operations during Syria’s revolution, the source said. Syria’s de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa discussed “the form of the military institution in the new Syria” during a meeting with armed factions on Saturday, state news agency Sana reported. Abu Qasra during the meeting sat next to Sharaa, also known by the nom de guerre Abu Mohammed al-Golani, photos published by Sana showed. Prime Minister Mohammed al-Bashir said this week that the defence ministry would be restructured using former rebel factions and officers who defected from Assad’s army. Bashir, who formerly led an HTS-affiliated administration in the northwestern province of Idlib, has said he will lead a three-month transitional government. The new administration has not declared plans for what will happen after that. Earlier on Saturday, the ruling General Command named Asaad Hassan al-Shibani as foreign minister, Sana said. A source in the new administration told Reuters that this step “comes in response to the aspirations of the Syrian people to establish international relations that bring peace and stability”. Shibani, a 37-year-old graduate of Damascus University, previously led the political department of the rebels’ Idlib government, the General Command said. Minorities reassured Sharaa hosted Lebanese Druze leader Walid Jumblatt on Sunday in another effort to reassure minorities that they would be protected. Sharaa said no sects would be excluded in Syria in what he described as “a new era far removed from sectarianism”. “We take pride in our culture, our religion and our Islam. Being part of the Islamic environment does not mean the exclusion of other sects. On the contrary, it is our duty to protect them,” he said during the meeting with Jumblatt, in comments broadcast by Lebanese broadcaster Al Jadeed. Agencies

Mary Magdalene may have been identified among the 300 tangled figures depicted in Michelangelo’s celebrated Sistine Chapel masterpiece after a centuries-long hunt. Sara Penco, an Italian art restorer, said her research suggested that a blonde woman in The Last Judgment artwork, who is depicted kissing a wooden cross held by a figure said to be Jesus Christ, was the famous female disciple. “I am firmly convinced that this is Mary Magdalene ... the intimacy with the cross, the yellow dress and the blonde hair but also the whole context in which Michelangelo places this figure to underscore her importance,” Penco told a media conference in Rome on December 10. Art experts have long tried to identify the wide-eyed woman who appears in the far right-hand corner of the fresco on the wall behind the Vatican chapel’s altar. However, Penco, who specialises in Renaissance and baroque art, said her research should finally put an end to the mystery. She said: “The fresco was screaming that something was missing. Michelangelo was an expert painter, he was very cultured, he was someone who knew the dynamics of the church very well, he knew the gospels, and he could not have forgotten her.” Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican in Rome. Credit: Eric Nathan / Alamy Stock Photo Mary Magdalene, according to the gospel, was one of Christ’s loyal disciples who accompanied him as he spread his message. Once portrayed as a repentant prostitute, she is now widely regarded as a saint by Catholic and other Christian faiths. Penco, who consulted various studies by scholars and theologians before conducting her own research, said the gospel often describes Mary Magdalene at the moment of Christ’s redemption, and she was fundamental in how salvation could be achieved. She said: “The cross-bearer is looking in the direction of Mary Magdalene, it is as if he is estranged from the composition looking towards the woman peacefully holding the wood and the cross.” Her findings will be published this week in the 240-page book Mary Magdalene in Michelangelo’s Judgement. Professor Yvonne Dohna Schlobitten, from the Gregorian University Department of History and Cultural Heritage in Rome, has endorsed the claim. She wrote in the book’s forward: “With great intuition, Sara Penco has discovered something that defines the being of art. “We can clearly see how iconography and theology are linked in Penco’s reasoning to form a vision: the woman kissing the cross has an important role, even if she appears hidden on the edges of the image.” The Last Judgment, which took Michelangelo Buonarroti four years to complete, attracts more than 5 million visitors to the Sistine Chapel every year. Painted between 1537 and 1541, it depicts the Second Coming of Christ and the Apocalypse and shows human souls and angels, many of them naked, either ascending to heaven or descending into hell. Last month, new research claimed Michelangelo may have depicted a woman suffering from breast cancer in his fresco of a biblical flood on the chapel’s ceiling. Coote was sacked earlier this month after the emergence of a video in which he made derogatory remarks about Liverpool and their former manager Jurgen Klopp. Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) said that a thorough investigation had concluded he was “in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable”. “Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us and we remain committed to his welfare,” PGMOL’s statement on December 9 added. Coote had the right to appeal against the decision but PA understands the Nottinghamshire referee has decided not to. The video which triggered PGMOL’s investigation into Coote’s conduct first came to public attention on November 11. In it, Coote is asked for his views on a Liverpool match where he has just been fourth official, and describes them as “s***”. He then describes Klopp as a “c***”, and, asked why he felt that way, Coote says the German had “a right pop at me when I reffed them against Burnley in lockdown” and had accused him of lying. “I have got no interest in speaking to someone who’s f****** arrogant, so I do my best not to speak to him,” Coote said. Later in the video, Coote again refers to Klopp, this time as a “German c***”. The Football Association opened its own investigation into that video, understood to be centred on that last comment and whether Coote’s reference to Klopp’s nationality constituted an aggravated breach of its misconduct rules. The investigation by PGMOL which led to Coote’s contract being terminated is also understood to have looked at another video which appeared to show Coote snorting a white powder, purportedly during Euro 2024 where he was one of the assistant VARs for the tournament. European football’s governing body UEFA also appointed an ethics investigator to look into the matter.Shenzhen, China, Nov. 22, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- This Black Friday, 3i is offering an exclusive opportunity to bring home cutting-edge cleaning technology at an exceptional value. Read more about AxarquiaThe extraordinary power struggle between Chicago Public Schools, the teachers union and Mayor Brandon Johnson continued after school board members attended ongoing teachers contract negotiations for the first time in 12 years. The unusual move to have members of the Board of Education at the bargaining table Monday came days after Johnson’s handpicked board voted to terminate CPS Chief Executive Officer Pedro Martinez at a special meeting on Friday. A lawyer representing Martinez responded by sending a cease and desist email to board members saying their presence at negotiations usurped Martinez’s role as the the current CEO. “We are writing to demand that the Board Member Defendants immediately cease and desist with any such actions, which unlawfully infringe on and interfere with Mr. Martinez’s authority, as CEO, to act as the sole representative of the Board in these negotiations,” Martinez’s lawyer William Quinlan of the Quinlan Law Firm LLC wrote. The decision to bring the board into negotiations was made public on social media by Jackson Potter, CTU vice president. “Today, for the first time since 2012 when Board president David Vitale joined bargaining to close the deal, we have Board of Education members present helping both sides land an agreement,” Potter wrote on X Monday afternoon. Friday’s meeting marked the end of a contentious chapter in CPS history but opened the door to more uncertainty. Because the school board fired Marinez without cause, the CEO will remain in his role for six months, “during which time the Chief Executive Officer’s duties and responsibilities shall be modified by the Board,” according to the resolution that passed 6-0. That has led to much confusion as to how Johnson and his board members would interact with the outgoing CEO and how he would respond. Members of the Chicago Teachers Union have been pushing for a resolution to a new, 4-year contract by Christmas, ahead of the inauguration of President-elect Donald J. Trump. Some financial analysts say the new board could saddle taxpayers with a fiscally irresponsible contract to reward the union — which funded Johnson’s mayoral campaign. “I think there’s this reputation right now that the mayor is driving the district to overspend, and if that’s the case, there will be less appetite from other politicians to bail (the district) out,” said Marguerite Roza, school finance expert and director of Georgetown University’s Edunomics Lab in a recent interview with the Tribune. “These are self-inflicted wounds.” Monday afternoon, school board President Sean Harden, and board members Frank Thomas and Olga Bautista left the Chicago Teachers Union headquarters near the United Center where negotiations were ongoing and declined comment on how Martinez’s duties would be modified. “Not at this point,” said Thomas, before getting into his car. Harden called Monday’s meeting “incredibly important work.” He said the board members present wanted to make sure “as leaders that the team at the table negotiating understands the importance of this time.” “We want to be here to show our support, make sure things move forward,” Harden said. “There’s no pause in activities. We’re stabilized. Taking care of business as it should be.” Chicago Board of Education board member Frank Thomas leaves the Chicago Teachers Union Center after a meeting on Dec. 23, 2024. (Terrence Antonio James/Chicago Tribune) In September, Martinez refused to take out a $300 million high-interest loan — asked for by the mayor — that the CEO said would saddle the district in debt. The teachers contract expired in June, and the loan would in part cover a new contract with proposals for higher raises and staffing levels. The bargaining team has ramped up negotiations in recent weeks, and is currently meeting six times a week. Board members Harden, Thomas and Bautista were appointed by the mayor after the previous board resigned en masse under pressure to oust Martinez for not taking out the loan. The mayor is a former teacher and CTU organizer. Under the Illinois School Code, the superintendent of a school district “shall negotiate contracts with all labor organizations which are exclusive representatives of educational employees employed under the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Act.” The CPS CEO negotiates collective bargaining agreements “on behalf of the board” and submits tentative agreements to the board for “adoption and approval,” according to district protocol. Though the board and the CEO have a collaborative relationship, it is uncommon for board members to be involved in negotiations. Martinez — like other district superintendents — typically doesn’t attend negotiations because he relies on his team of employees with specialties to do so. He did not attend bargaining conversations on Monday. The district did not immediately respond to a request for further comment. The last time a school board president stepped into negotiations, as noted by Potter on X, was David Vitale in 2012 . Then-school board President Vitale, an executive in banking and then trading, maintained a presence in teachers contract negotiations as they were coming to a close during a 7-day strike.A battle in court between Martinez and the members of the board is also ramping up, with a hearing for a temporary restraining order over the CEO’s firing on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m at the Richard J. Daley Center in the Loop.

Left-hander Max Fried agrees to $218 million, 8-year contract with Yankees, AP source says DALLAS (AP) — A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that Max Fried and the New York Yankees have agreed to a $218 million, eight-year contract, the largest deal for a left-handed pitcher in baseball history. New York made the move two days after outfielder Juan Soto left for a pending $765 million, 15-year contract with the rival Mets. Fried, who turns 31 in January, gets the fourth-highest contract among pitchers behind the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Yankees’ Gerrit Cole and Washington’s Stephen Strasburg. Fried broke the mark for lefties set by David Price at $217 million. Mbappe, Vinicius and Bellingham all on target in Real Madrid's 3-2 win over Atalanta Real Madrid’s big stars turned on the style to revive the Spanish giant’s faltering Champions League title defense. Galacticos Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham all scored in a 3-2 win at Italian league leader Atalanta. It was only Madrid’s third win in the competition’s revamped league phase and leaves the 15-time champion in the unseeded playoff positions in 18th place. In contrast Liverpool leads the way after maintaining its perfect record in Europe this season after a 1-0 win against Girona. Mohamed Salah scored his 50th Champions League goal to seal it for Liverpool. Analysis: After Juan Soto's megadeal, could MLB see a $1 billion contract? Probably not soon For the second straight Major League Baseball offseason, a norm-shattering contract has been the talk of the winter, with Juan Soto agreeing with the New York Mets on a $765 million, 15-year deal that’s the richest in baseball history. It comes almost exactly one year after the Los Angeles Dodgers forked out a princely sum of $700 million on a 10-year, heavily deferred deal for two-way Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani. The way it’s going, a contract approaching $1 billion doesn’t seem out of the question. But several factors are working against it — at least in the near future. Joe Burrow's home broken into during Monday Night Football in latest pro-athlete home invasion ANDERSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio (AP) — Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow’s home was broken into during Monday Night Football in the latest home invasion of a pro athlete in the U.S. Authorities said Tuesday no one was injured in the break-in, but the home was ransacked. Deputies weren’t immediately able to determine what items were stolen. Both the NFL and NBA issued alerts to players following prior break-ins, urging them to take precautions. The homes of Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were broken into in October. In the NBA, Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley Jr. had their homes broken into. Woods won it five times in a row, and three straight times on another occasion. Scheffler won seven times on the PGA Tour against only the strongest fields. He also won the FedEx Cup. He also won the Masters green jacket and an Olympic gold medal. Sasaki helped Japan win the 2023 World Baseball Classic and has a fastball clocked at 102.5 mph. Cubs Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg says cancer has returned, spread CHICAGO (AP) — Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg says the prostate cancer he thought had been eliminated by radiation has returned and spread. The Chicago Cubs great made the announcement on Instagram on Tuesday. Sandberg announced in January that he had metastatic prostate cancer and in August said he was cancer-free after chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Sandberg was the National League MVP in 1984 and a 10-time All-Star during 15 seasons for the Cubs from 1982 to 1997, with 282 home runs and 344 stolen bases. After his playing career, he served as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies from 2013 to 2015, going 119-159. Nolan Arenado open to switch from third base to first and leaving Cardinals for a team he approves DALLAS (AP) — Nolan Arenado is open to a trade from the St. Louis Cardinals, at age 33 wanting to be on a World Series contender. Agent Joel Wolfe says “it’s like his biological clock is ticking and if the team’s not winning it’s driving him crazy every day.” An eight-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove third baseman, Arenado is open to a switch to first base. He hit .272 with 16 homers and 71 RBIs this year, his poorest season in a decade. St. Louis acquired Arenado from Colorado ahead of the 2021 season. Maybe that shouldn't be surprising For the first time in 36 seasons, the Cleveland Cavaliers are atop the NBA at the 25-game mark. They’re 21-4, even after having come back to earth a bit following a 15-0 start. The Cavs are just one of the surprise stories that have emerged as the season nears the one-third-done mark. Orlando is off to its best start in 16 years at 17-9 and having done most of that without All-Star forward Paolo Banchero. And Houston is 16-8, behind only the Cavs, Boston, Oklahoma City and Memphis so far in the race for the league’s best record. The life and ways of a grammar Nazi

The Israeli military says it has killed a militant who took part in the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel and who it says was employed by the World Central Kitchen charity in the Gaza Strip. or signup to continue reading The official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that three employees of World Central Kitchen were killed when an Israeli strike targeted a civilian vehicle in Khan Younis, in the enclave's south. The military did not offer any evidence and Reuters could not independently verify the man's identity and whether he took part in the attack on Israel last year. There was no immediate comment from World Central Kitchen on the Israeli statement. Hamas did not immediately comment. Medics in the enclave said that a total of five people were killed in the strike, which they said targeted a vehicle east of Khan Younis. In a later attack in Khan Younis, medics said at least nine Palestinians were killed when an Israeli air strike hit a car near a crowd receiving flour, a vehicle that was used by security personnel tasked with overseeing aid deliveries into the Gaza Strip. The Israeli military rejects allegations that it deliberately targets civilians in its Gaza campaign, accusing Hamas of operating from civilian facilities and using civilians as shields, which the group denies. Overall, at least 32 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes across the enclave overnight and into Saturday, Gaza medics said. Among those, at least seven died in an Israeli strike on a house in central Gaza City, according to a statement from the Gaza Civil Defence and WAFA early on Saturday. Meanwhile leaders of Hamas were expected to arrive in Cairo on Saturday for ceasefire talks with Egyptian officials, days after Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire in Lebanon, two officials of the group told Reuters. The visit is the first since the United States announced earlier this week it would revive efforts in collaboration with Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey to negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza. The Hamas delegation is expected to meet with Egyptian security officials to explore ways to reach a ceasefire deal with Israel that could secure the release of hostages in return for Palestinian prisoners. Progress before now has been limited in a series of on-off talks over months. Hamas is seeking an agreement that would end the war while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that the war will end only when Hamas is eradicated. Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip has killed at least 44,382 people and displaced nearly all of the enclave's population at least once, Gaza officials say. Vast swathes of the Gaza Strip lie in ruins. The conflict was triggered 13 months ago when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israeli communities, killing about 1200 people and capturing 250 hostages, according to Israeli officials.
