NEW YORK — Greg Gumbel, a longtime CBS sportscaster, has died from cancer, according to a statement from family released by CBS on Friday. He was 78. "He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten," his wife Marcy Gumbel and daughter Michelle Gumbel said in a statement. In March, Gumbel missed his first NCAA Tournament since 1997 due to what he said at the time were family health issues. Gumbel was the studio host for CBS since returning to the network from NBC in 1998. Gumbel signed an extension with CBS last year that allowed him to continue hosting college basketball while stepping back from NFL announcing duties. In 2001, he announced Super Bowl XXXV for CBS, becoming the first Black announcer in the U.S. to call play-by-play of a major sports championship. David Berson, president and CEO of CBS Sports, described Gumbel as breaking barriers and setting standards for others during his years as a voice for fans in sports, including in the NFL and March Madness. "A tremendous broadcaster and gifted storyteller, Greg led one of the most remarkable and groundbreaking sports broadcasting careers of all time," said Berson. Gumbel had two stints at CBS, leaving the network for NBC when it lost football in 1994 and returning when it regained the contract in 1998. He hosted CBS' coverage of the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics and called Major League Baseball games during its four-year run broadcasting the national pastime. In 1995, he hosted the World Figure Skating Championships and the following year hosted NBC's daytime coverage of the Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta. But it was football and basketball where he was best known and made his biggest impact. Gumbel hosted CBS' NFL studio show, "The NFL Today" from 1990 to 1993 and again in 2004. He also called NFL games as the network's lead play-by-play announcer from 1998 to 2003, including Super Bowl XXXV and XXXVIII. He returned to the NFL booth in 2005, leaving that role after the 2022 season. "Like all who knew and loved him, I too am saddened by his death, yet also so very grateful to have known him in my life," Clark Kellogg, a CBS Sports college basketball game and studio analyst, said in a statement. "What a gift to be touched by such a good man and partner." Gumbel, the older brother of sportscaster Bryant Gumbel, grew up in Chicago and graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1967 with a degree in English. He won local Emmy Awards during his long career and was the recipient of the 2007 Pat Summerall Award for excellence in sports broadcasting. Outside of his career as a sportscaster, he was affiliated with the March of Dimes for three decades, including as a member of its board of trustees. He also was a member of the Sports Council for St Jude's Children's Research Hospital for 16 years. Police had to use pepper spray to break up the players, who threw punches and shoves in the melee that overshadowed the rivalry game. Ohio State police said in a statement “multiple officers representing Ohio and Michigan deployed pepper spray.” Ohio State police will investigate the fight, according to the statement. After the Ohio State players confronted their bitter rivals at midfield, defensive end Jack Sawyer grabbed the top of the Wolverines' flag and ripped it off the pole as the brawl moved toward the Michigan bench. Eventually, police officers rushed into the ugly scene. Ohio State coach Ryan Day said he understood the actions of his players. “There are some prideful guys on our team who weren't going to sit back and let that happen,” Day said. The two Ohio State players made available after the game brushed off questions about it. Michigan running back Kalel Mullings, who rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown, didn't like how the Buckeyes players involved themselves in the Wolverines' postgame celebration. He called it “classless.” “For such a great game, you hate to see stuff like that after the game," he said in an on-field interview with Fox Sports. “It’s just bad for the sport, bad for college football. But at the end of the day, you know some people got to — they got to learn how to lose, man. ... We had 60 minutes, we had four quarters, to do all that fighting.” Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said everybody needs to do better. “So much emotions on both sides," he said. "Rivalry games get heated, especially this one. It’s the biggest one in the country, so we got to handle that better.” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Tributes have been paid to a former BBC football commentator dubbed the "voice of Leicester City" following his death at the age of 85. Neville Foulger, a respected journalist for over half a century, was synonymous with a glory period for the Foxes in the late 1990s through to his retirement in 2004. Among those paying tribute was Geoff Peters, now at TalkSport, who was his colleague and friend for many years at BBC Radio Leicester. He said: "He's been a constant throughout my life... he was a real father figure." Mr Foulger, who lived in Barrow upon Soar, also had spells working in Nottingham, Birmingham and Coventry during his career in journalism. His final game working for the Coventry Telegraph was Coventry City's famous 3-2 FA Cup triumph in 1987 before he moved to Leicester to run a press agency. He then went on to report and commentate on football and cricket at BBC Radio Leicester for many years until he retired. Mr Peters recalled how he was employed by Mr Foulger at his news agency when he was 16 and went on to work with him at BBC Radio Leicester in the mid-1990s. They were reunited again in the press box during Leicester City's fairytale Premier League title-winning run in 2016. He added he was moved by the many tributes on social media from those who listened intently to games over the years. "As a boss he was hard but fair... I owe him lots. Today is a sad day," he said. "I learned so much from him, he was a brilliant journalist. He was a very giving, kind, caring person. "He was a wonderful family man - I saw him earlier this year and he really sparkled when he was talking about his family. "My heart is full of so much love that I could spend so much time with him over the years and learn from him." In a statement, Leicester City said: "We are all saddened to hear of the passing of much-loved journalist, Neville Foulger. "Covering countless City games, Nev commentated on some of the club’s greatest moments across several decades. "Nev was known by many generations as the voice of Leicester City, and will be sadly missed by all who knew him." He is survived by his wife Fran, children David and Anne, and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Listen and subscribe to Financial Freestyle on Apple Podcasts , Spotify , or wherever you find your favorite podcasts. Blockchain and Web3 technologies aim to give people the ability to exert more ownership over their content on the internet. For artists and creators, this could actually make it easier for them to profit from their work. On Yahoo Finance’s Financial Freestyle podcast, Chris Lyons , president of Web3 Media at a16z crypto, Andreessen Horowitz’s venture capital crypto fund, broke down blockchain’s eventual integration into everyday life and how this shift can actually make creating content online more profitable. “You're going to start to see brand new social networks that are going to come out where you can actually have 100% ownership of your followers,” he said (see video above or listen below). This embedded content is not available in your region. Lyons used American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat as an example. "Back in the day, [Basquiat] sold a painting for $25,000," Lyons explained. "50 years later, that same piece is now sold for $100 million, and how much was he able to take from that?” Only the original $25,000, Lyons confirmed. "But if that was on [blockchain]," he continued, "what happens now is that there's a smart contract that's already written inside of it, so you can say, 'I'm going to get 10% of every single secondary transaction that's now being sold.'" Lyons theorized that through the integration of blockchain, creators and artists will be able to have a "zero-to-one engagement" with their fans, removing the middlemen that currently take a cut of most online transactions. “New music platforms are going to come out where instead of having to make a million [purchases] for an artist to have a sustainable living, now all you need is 1,000 true fans that can every day buy your CD, buy your merch, buy your tickets — and you can create an actual living off of that,” he said. While blockchain remains unfamiliar to many who aren’t well-versed in cryptocurrency and digital transactions, Lyons suggested it could become as ubiquitous as GPS technology. "I have a theory that I'm basically calling 'hiding the wires,'" he said. "The next generation of blockchain or even AI technologies — you're not even going to really notice or know that you're using them." "You talk about financial freedom," Lyons added, "but we still are in all these systems that are creating centralized ownership, and I think that the only true path forward is decentralization and blockchain.” Every Monday, Financial Freestyle host Ross Mac talks with key guests to discuss their wealth-building journeys and what it takes to build a lasting financial footprint. (AP) — An online spat between factions of Donald Trump’s supporters over immigration and the tech industry has thrown internal divisions in his political movement into public display, previewing the fissures and contradictory views his coalition could bring to the White House. The rift laid bare the tensions between the newest flank of Trump’s movement — wealthy members of the tech world including billionaire Elon Musk and fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and their call for more highly skilled workers in their industry — and people in Trump’s Make America Great Again base who championed his hardline immigration policies. The debate touched off this week when Laura Loomer , a right-wing provocateur with a history of racist and conspiratorial comments, criticized Trump’s selection of Sriram Krishnan as an adviser on artificial intelligence policy in his coming administration. Krishnan favors the ability to bring more skilled immigrants into the U.S. Loomer declared the stance to be “not America First policy” and said the tech executives who have aligned themselves with Trump were doing so to enrich themselves. Much of the debate played out on the social media network X, which Musk owns. Loomer’s comments sparked a back-and-forth with venture capitalist and former PayPal executive David Sacks , whom Trump has tapped to be the “White House A.I. & Crypto Czar.” Musk and Ramaswamy, whom Trump has tasked with finding ways to cut the federal government , weighed in, defending the tech industry’s need to bring in foreign workers. It bloomed into a larger debate with more figures from the hard-right weighing in about the need to hire U.S. workers, whether values in American culture can produce the best engineers, free speech on the internet, the newfound influence tech figures have in Trump’s world and what his political movement stands for. Trump has not yet weighed in on the rift, and his presidential transition team did not respond to a message seeking comment. Musk, the world’s richest man who has grown remarkably close to the president-elect , was a central figure in the debate, not only for his stature in Trump’s movement but his stance on the tech industry’s hiring of foreign workers. Technology companies say H-1B visas for skilled workers, used by software engineers and others in the tech industry, are critical for hard-to-fill positions. But critics have said they undercut U.S. citizens who could take those jobs. Some on the right have called for the program to be eliminated, not expanded. Born in South Africa, Musk was once on an a H-1B visa himself and defended the industry’s need to bring in foreign workers. “There is a permanent shortage of excellent engineering talent,” he said in a post. “It is the fundamental limiting factor in Silicon Valley.” Related Articles National Politics | Should the U.S. increase immigration levels for highly skilled workers? His tough immigration policies, including his pledge for a mass deportation, were central to his winning presidential campaign. He has focused on immigrants who come into the U.S. illegally but he has also sought curbs on legal immigration , including family-based visas. As a presidential candidate in 2016, Trump called the H-1B visa program “very bad” and “unfair” for U.S. workers. After he became president, Trump in 2017 issued a “Buy American and Hire American” executive order , which directed Cabinet members to suggest changes to ensure H-1B visas were awarded to the highest-paid or most-skilled applicants to protect American workers. Trump’s businesses, however, have hired foreign workers, including waiters and cooks at his Mar-a-Lago club , and his social media company behind his Truth Social app has used the the H-1B program for highly skilled workers. During his 2024 campaign for president, as he made immigration his signature issue, Trump said immigrants in the country illegally are “poisoning the blood of our country” and promised to carry out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history. But in a sharp departure from his usual alarmist message around immigration generally, Trump told a podcast this year that he wants to give automatic green cards to foreign students who graduate from U.S. colleges. “I think you should get automatically, as part of your diploma, a green card to be able to stay in this country,” he told the “All-In” podcast with people from the venture capital and technology world. Those comments came on the cusp of Trump’s budding alliance with tech industry figures, but he did not make the idea a regular part of his campaign message or detail any plans to pursue such changes.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Charlotte Hornets will be without point guard LaMelo Ball for at least two weeks because of a strained left calf. Ball felt discomfort in his calf after Wednesday night’s loss to the Miami Heat and did not play against the New York Knicks on Friday. The team said he will be reevaluated on Dec. 11, which is two weeks from the date of the original injury. Ball has been hot for the Hornets, averaging 40.3 points in his last four games. He is averaging a career-best 31.1 points and 4.7 3-pointers per game for the season, which ranks second in the NBA. He also is averaging 5.4 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 1.1 steals in 18 starts. Ball has had a history of injury problems, mostly to his ankles, since coming to the league as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft. The only Hornets player to ever receive a max contract extension, Ball has played in just 202 games with 182 starts in five seasons. The team also said guard Tre Mann’s lower back soreness has been diagnosed as a disk irritation. His absence from the lineup began on Nov. 23 against Milwaukee. He will continue his rehabilitation and be reevaluated in two weeks. “They are competitors and they want to be out there on the court to compete and hoop, but they also want to be out there for their teammates,” Hornets coach Charles Lee said prior to Saturday night's game against the Atlanta Hawks. "I just walked past ’Melo as I was coming in here to do media, and he’s like, ‘I’m going to take care of everything I need to do on this return to play program and I’m going to attack it with the right mindset.’ I have all the confidence in the world in our performance staff and in those guys.” AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA
U.S. president-elect Donald Trump says he told Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky during a Christmas Day visit that he should run for prime minister of Canada. “I just left Wayne Gretzky, ‘The Great One’ as he is known in ice-hockey circles,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform Wednesday afternoon. “I said, ‘Wayne, why don’t you run for prime minister of Canada, soon to be known as the governor of Canada — you would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign.’ He had no interest,” Trump wrote. His comment about being governor of Canada refers to Trump repeatedly suggesting the country become a U.S. state, which Ottawa insists is a joke. Trump added that it would be “fun to watch” if Canadians launched a movement to get the retired hockey player to seek office. The Canadian Press has tried to contact Gretzky through his agents. Experts have said that Ottawa is rightfully focused on the prospect of damaging tariffs under the looming Trump presidency instead of pushing back on rhetoric about annexing or purchasing Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau leads a minority government that could be toppled by a confidence vote next year, following the surprise resignation of finance minister Chrystia Freeland. Trump also expressed Christmas greetings to Trudeau, again referring to him as a governor and claiming that Canadians would see a tax cut of more than 60 per cent if the country became an American state. “Their businesses would immediately double in size, and they would be militarily protected like no other country anywhere in the world,” Trump wrote in a post that also alluded to his desire to annex Greenland and the Panama Canal. Gretzky has previously backed Conservative politicians, such as former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Patrick Brown during his run for the party leadership. During the 2015 federal election, Conservative leader Stephen Harper interviewed Gretzky in front of hundreds of supporters as the Tories unsuccessfully sought re-election. At the event, Gretzky told Harper he thought he had been an “unreal prime minister” who had been “wonderful to the whole country.” Gretzky later said he always follows a prime minister’s request, regardless of political stripe, noting he had once hosted a lunch for former Liberal prime minister Pierre Trudeau.Holland & Barrett set to open new high street store in BrentwoodLONDON — A woman who claimed mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor "brutally raped and battered" her in a Dublin hotel penthouse was awarded nearly 250,000 Euros ($257,000) on Friday by a civil court jury in Ireland. Nikita Hand said the Dec. 9, 2018, assault after a night of partying left her heavily bruised and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. McGregor testified that he never forced the woman to do anything against her will and said she fabricated the allegations after the two had consensual sex. His lawyer had called Hand a gold digger. The fighter, once the face of the Ultimate Fighting Championship but now past his prime, shook his head as the jury of eight women and four men found him liable for assault after deliberating about six hours in the High Court in Dublin. He was mobbed by cameras as he left court but did not comment. He later said on the social platform X that he would appeal the verdict and the "modest award." Hand's voice cracked and her hands trembled as she read a statement outside the courthouse, saying she would never forget what happened to her but would now be able to move on with her life. She thanked her family, partner, friends, jurors, the judge and all the supporters that had reached out to her online, but particularly her daughter. "She has given me so much strength and courage over the last six years throughout this nightmare to keep on pushing forward for justice," she said. "I want to show (her) and every other girl and boy that you can stand up for yourself if something happens to you, no matter who the person is, and justice will be served." The Associated Press generally does not name alleged victims of sexual violence unless they come forward publicly, as Hand has done. Under Irish law, she did not have the anonymity she would have been granted in a criminal proceeding and was named publicly throughout the trial. Her lawyer told jurors that McGregor was angry about a fight he had lost in Las Vegas two months earlier and took it out on his client. "He's not a man, he's a coward," attorney John Gordon said in his closing speech. "A devious coward and you should treat him for what he is." Gordon said his client never pretended to be a saint and was only looking to have fun when she sent McGregor a message through Instagram after attending a Christmas party. He said Hand knew McGregor socially and that they had grown up in the same area. She said he picked her and a friend up in a car and shared cocaine with them, which McGregor admitted in court, on the way to the Beacon Hotel. Hand said she told McGregor she didn't want to have sex with him and that she was menstruating. She said she told him "no" as he started kissing her but he eventually pinned her to a bed and she couldn't move. McGregor put her in a chokehold and later told her, "now you know how I felt in the octagon where I tapped out three times," referring to a UFC match when he had to admit defeat, she said. Hand had to take several breaks in emotional testimony over three days. She said McGregor threatened to kill her during the encounter and she feared she would never see her young daughter again. Eventually, he let go of her. "I remember saying I was sorry, as I felt that I did something wrong and I wanted to reassure him that I wouldn't tell anyone so he wouldn't hurt me again," she testified. She said she then let him do what he wanted and he had sex with her. A paramedic who examined Hand the next day testified that she had never before seen someone with that intensity of bruising. A doctor told jurors Hand had multiple injuries. Hand said the trauma of the attack had left her unable to work as a hairdresser, she fell behind on her mortgage and had to move out of her house. Police investigated the woman's complaint but prosecutors declined to bring charges, saying there was insufficient evidence and a conviction was unlikely. McGregor, in his post on X, said he was disappointed jurors didn't see all the evidence prosecutors had reviewed. He testified that the two had athletic and vigorous sex, but that it was not rough. He said "she never said 'no' or stopped" and testified that everything she said was a lie. "It is a full blown lie among many lies," he said when asked about the chokehold allegation. "How anyone could believe that me, as a prideful person, would highlight my shortcomings." McGregor's lawyer told jurors they had to set aside their animus toward the fighter. "You may have an active dislike of him, some of you may even loathe him – there is no point pretending that the situation might be otherwise," attorney Remy Farrell said. "I'm not asking you to invite him to Sunday brunch." The defense said the woman never told investigators McGregor threatened her life. They also showed surveillance video in court that they said appeared to show the woman kiss McGregor's arm and hug him after they left the hotel room. Farrell said she looked "happy, happy, happy." McGregor said he was "beyond petrified" when first questioned by police and read them a prepared statement. On the advice of his lawyer, he refused to answer more than 100 follow-up questions. The jury ruled against Hand in a case she brought against one of McGregor's friends, James Lawrence, whom she accused of having sex with her in the hotel without consent. REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) – Icelanders are electing a new parliament Saturday after disagreements over immigration, energy policy and the economy forced Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson to pull the plug on his coalition government and call an early election. This is Iceland’s sixth general election since the 2008 financial crisis devastated the economy of the North Atlantic island nation and ushered in a new era of political instability. Opinion polls suggest the country may be in for another upheaval, with support for the three governing parties plunging. Benediktsson, who was named prime minister in April following the resignation of his predecessor, struggled to hold together the unlikely coalition of his conservative Independence Party with the centrist Progressive Party and the Left-Green Movement. Iceland, a nation of about 400,000 people, is proud of its democratic traditions, describing itself as arguably the world’s oldest parliamentary democracy. The island’s parliament, the Althingi, was founded in 930 by the Norsemen who settled the country. Fierce weather in the sub-Arctic nation threatened to hamper some voters getting to polling stations on Saturday, with heavy snow blocking roads in many areas. The weather could also delay the delivery of ballot boxes to counting centers after polls close at 10 p.m. (2200GMT). Here’s what to look for in the contest. Voters will choose 63 members of the Althingi in an election that will allocate seats both by regional constituencies and proportional representation. Parties need at least 5% of the vote to win seats in parliament. Eight parties were represented in the outgoing parliament, and 10 parties are contesting this election. Turnout is traditionally high by international standards, with 80% of registered voters casting ballots in the 2021 parliamentary election. A windswept island near the Arctic Circle, Iceland normally holds elections during the warmer months of the year. But on Oct. 13 Benediktsson decided his coalition couldn’t last any longer, and he asked President Halla Tómasdóttir to dissolve the Althingi. vhttps://twitter.com/BreitbartLondon/status/1797368452119761236 “The weakness of this society is that we have no very strong party and we have no very strong leader of any party,” said Vilhjálmur Bjarnason a former member of parliament. “We have no charming person with a vision ... That is very difficult for us.” The splintering of Iceland’s political landscape came after the 2008 financial crisis, which prompted years of economic upheaval after the country’s debt-swollen banks collapsed. The crisis led to anger and distrust of the parties that had traditionally traded power back and forth, and prompted the creation of new parties ranging from the environment focused Left-Green Alliance to the Pirate Party, which advocates direct democracy and individual freedoms. “This is one of the consequences of the economic crash,” said Eva H. Önnudóttir, a professor of political science at the University of Iceland. “It’s just the changed landscape. Parties, especially the old parties, have maybe kind of been hoping that we would go back to how things were before, but that’s not going to happen.” Like many Western countries, Iceland has been buffeted by the rising cost of living and immigration pressures. Inflation peaked at an annual rate of 10.2% in February 2023, fueled by the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While inflation slowed to 5.1% in October, that is still high compared with neighboring countries. The U.S. inflation rate stood at 2.6% last month, while the European Union ́s rate was 2.3%. Iceland is also struggling to accommodate a rising number of asylum-seekers, creating tensions within the small, traditionally homogenous country. The number of immigrants seeking protection in Iceland jumped to more than 4,000 in each of the past three years, compared with a previous average of less than 1,000. Repeated eruptions of a volcano in the southwestern part of the country have displaced thousands of people and strained public finances. One year after the first eruption forced the evacuation of the town of Grindavik, many residents still don’t have secure housing, leading to complaints that the government has been slow to respond. But it also added to a shortage of affordable housing exacerbated by Iceland ́s tourism boom. Young people are struggling to get a foot on the housing ladder at a time when short-term vacation rentals have reduced the housing stock available for locals, Önnudóttir said. “The housing issue is becoming a big issue in Iceland,” she said.

And Ohio State linebacker Jack Sawyer, who had an interception in the game, ripped the Michigan flag away from the Wolverine players before tensions finally calmed down. “I don’t know all the details of it, but I know these guys are looking to put a flag on our field and our guys weren’t not gonna let that happen,” Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said after the game. “I’ll find out exactly what happened, but this is our field. We certainly were embarrassed of the fact that we lost the game, but there’s some prideful guys on this team that weren’t just gonna let that happen.” Police used pepper spray, according to multiple reports, with members of both teams getting hit. Several Michigan players were shown on the Fox broadcast rubbing their eyes in obvious discomfort. “For such a great game, you hate to see stuff like that after the game,” Michigan running back Kalel Mullings said. “That’s just bad for the sport, bad for college football. But at the end of the day, some people gotta learn how to lose. “You can’t be fighting and stuff just because you lost a game. All that fighting, we had 60 minutes, we had four quarters to do all that fighting. And now people want to talk and fight, that’s wrong. It’s just bad for the game. Classless, in my opinion. People gotta better.” Saturday’s game marked Michigan’s fourth-straight in the famed rivalry, though they entered this edition unranked and as massive underdogs with Ohio State ranked No. 2 in the country. Michigan now sits at 7-5, while Ohio State is 10-2. As the fracas finally began to settle down, Michigan defensive lineman Mason Graham could be heard shouting “Ohio State p—y’s in the Buckeyes’ direction.” Michigan edge rusher Chibi Anwunah was escorted away by security after being pepper sprayed. Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore also waved goodbye to Ohio State fans in the final seconds of the game. “Unnecessary gesture by the Wolverines,” Fox play-by-play man Gus Johnson said of the postgame incident. “They won the game, no need to be disrespectful.” Wolverines quarterback David Warren threw for just 62 yards and two interceptions, but Mullings rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown and Michigan’s defense stifled the Buckeyes offense throughout the game. Ohio State quarterback Will Howard struggled, throwing for 175 yards, one touchdowns and two interceptions. Buckeyes kicker Jeyden Fielding also missed two short field goals, while Michigan kicker Dominic Zvada drilled both his attempts. -This story was originally published in The New York Post and reproduced with permission.

Disney will pay US$43.25 million to settle a class action from roughly 9,000 female employees in California accusing the company of pay discrimination, reports The Hollywood Reporter . Under the deal, Disney will retain experts to address “significant pay differences” using a model commissioned by lawyers representing the women, they said in a statement. The lawsuit, filed in 2019, centred on claims from female workers employed by Disney since 2015, who said they’re being paid less than their male counterparts for substantially similar work. It was brought by LaRonda Rasmussen , a longtime product development manager at Walt Disney Studios, and Karen Moore , who has spent over two decades as a senior copyright administrator for Disney’s Hollywood Records. At the time, Disney denied allegations of pay bias across numerous corporate divisions in the class action seeking up to $300 million. Sinclair is a longtime Liberal party member and runs Perth agency Ammo Marketing, which helped build both Zempilas’ Churchlands campaign website and Liberal leader Libby Mettam’s website. He confirmed to WAtoday that his agency was behind the Sodali & Co polling but that it was commissioned by an Ammo Marketing client and was provided only to them – not Zempilas. “We outsourced to Sodali on behalf of our client,” he said. “We do work for a range of conservative groups around WA and need to respect client expectations to keep their work confidential. Just as any professional firm would.” The polling, leaked to Seven West Media’s The West Australian , triggered a failed challenge of Mettam on Tuesday. Zempilas emphatically denied that he knew about the poll and that he only found out about its existence a week ago by reading about it. Zempilas deferred questions to Sinclair. Speaking after the leadership challenge on Tuesday afternoon, Zempilas said he had been told a name but that it was not his information to share. The news was announced on the same day that Paul Webster , who was editor of The Observer until earlier this month, wrote a lengthy denunciation of the proposed sale, which he said was based on “two false premises”: that the newspaper’s operation poses a financial risk to The Guardian and that Tortoise Media could sustain the brand in print. A Guardian and Observer staff strike over the proposed sale is set for early next month. Rayner, who has reviewed restaurants for The Observer for 25 years, said last month that he had been shortlisted for columnist of the year in the BSME Awards “in the same month that The Guardian has told me they will terminate all our contracts if they can sell The Observer to Tortoise”. Tortoise and Guardian News and Media have previously assured Observer staff that their jobs will be safe if the sale goes ahead. In an unlikely feud, the tension between the under pressure KIIS FM host and soon to depart ABC host has boiled over. Sammy J poked the bear so to speak when he had a little dig after the latest radio ratings, saying that he’d “beat Kyle again”. Sandilands said: “There’s some guy at the ABC in Melbourne who quit, but he was saying some weird shit like: ‘I beat Kyle Sandilands’ and ‘I’m the first thing he thinks about’. “I have never even heard of him and he thinks that he is in my mind. What a deluded flog. I don’t know who you are dog ... Bro no one knows who you are.” On Tuesday morning Sammy J posted to his socials, addressing the matter. “I’m getting so many calls from the media that I thought it would be best to put this out there — won’t be making further comment,’’ he wrote. “To describe this as a “feud” is incorrect and offensive to both myself and Mr Sandilands. He and I both agree on facts: “I will have better ratings than him for all eternity “He can’t stop thinking about me “He needs music and ads plus multiple co-presenters to prop him up but I can host a radio show all on my own cos I’m a big boy “I trust this settles the matter. It was me, the host I was working with, the breakfast producers and their host, Alan Jones , writes Stephanie Coombes in The Australian . We were a small group and had a few obligatory social events with clients. If I was conspicuous, it was because I was the only woman on that trip, and the only producer not working on breakfast. Despite this – and to my immense amusement – Jones introduced himself to me no less than four times in just three days. Every interaction went the same way. Jones, thinking I was a client or perhaps a fan, would go to shake my hand. He was smiling then, full of charm. I would take his hand and tell him, again, that I was from 2GB. In an instant, the beatific expression fell from his face like a meat pie dropped on concrete. Suddenly all jowls and scorn, he’d walk away without another word. For Alan Jones, women – especially young women – were completely below his notice. I could never muster any energy to be offended. I found these interactions to be funny, so I filed them away as fodder for future dinner parties. In fact, if I felt anything towards Jones at that time, it was pity. Nevertheless, when Squid Game was released on September 17, 2021, it became an instant worldwide phenomenon. The story of a divorced gambling addict called Gi-hun ( Lee Jung-jae ), who enters a secret contest with 455 other hapless players for the chance of winning a 45.6 billion won ($50.4 million) prize, struck a collective human nerve. It is dark, gripping, violent and an unapologetic portrayal of the lengths people would go to escape their class struggle. Indeed, Squid Game altered the course of people’s lives. The manager who greenlit the show now leads Netflix content for all Asia (excluding India). In 2023, Netflix pledged to spend $US2.5 billion in Korea over four years, double the amount it had spent in the seven years before that. Weeks out from the premiere of the hugely anticipated second season on December 26, can the man who is its writer, director and producer do it again?
