Bryan Nelson’s daily commute is short, very short — about the 30 seconds it takes to move between his kitchen table and the woodworking studio that consumes the garage of the southwest Arlington home he shares with his wife, Audrey, a sales rep for a major electronics component distributor. “Stand back,” he says, using a compressor to blast the shop detritus out of his beard and off of his clothes so he can walk back into the house. Nelson, 63, a longtime avocational woodworker who specializes in crochet hooks, turned to the lathe full time in 2013 after losing his management job at a local company. Except for the occasional dumpster find, he buys wood from international vendors. Nelsonwood What: Bryan Nelson is an Arlington woodworker who specializes in crochet hooks. This interview has been edited for content, grammar and clarity. Scott Nishimura: How much of what’s in your home have you built? Bryan Nelson: Everything but the kitchen table and the clock (hanging on a wall). Everything else in here that’s wood I’ve made. The kitchen cabinets. This table. The TV cabinet. Nishimura: Where did you start to learn woodwork? Nelson: I took a shop class in junior high school. It scared the heck out of me. I made one bowl. Nishimura: Do you still have the bowl? Nelson: Yes. I keep my morning meds in it. Nishimura: You started with bowls. How did you make the move into crochet hooks? Nelson: I had a niece (in 2014) who requested a crochet hook. She thought they were great, so I started turning them, and it really took off. It overwhelmed my whole business. Nishimura: You promote the ergonomic design of your hooks. Tell us about that. Nelson: This design helps those who have hand and wrist pain, enabling them to crochet longer and have less pain compared to a smaller metal hook. Nishimura: How many woods do you work with? Nelson: About 120 — 95 for a hook. Nishimura: Customers can buy hooks ready to sell from your site. Can a buyer fully customize a hook? Nelson: Yes. There’s all kinds of different combinations. They pick a body, rings, endwoods. If you think of all the combinations, there’s thousands of different combinations. Nishimura: How long does it take to generate a hook? Nelson: A solid wood hook, 25 minutes. Combination, 45 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes. Nishimura: Do you know how many you’ve done over time? Nelson: I’ve never really thought about it. Nishimura: Do you crochet? Nelson: My mom taught me to do crochet, but it’s been a long time. Nishimura: Tell me about your work day. Nelson: I get up when I want. I spend six hours in the shop turning wood. Then it’s another hour inside, packaging and shipping. The postman picks it up. She stops and honks. I’ve got her trained really well. Nishimura: How do you sell? Nelson: My website nelsonwood.net and Etsy . Etsy is mainly a lead generator, and the prices are cheaper on my site. Nishimura: Do you do your own social media? Nelson: I post a picture or a reel (on Instagram) at least five times a week. I do everything. Nishimura: Is your business seasonal? Nelson: I work year-round, but once you get to the end of the year, it can triple. Nishimura: How much competition do you have? Nelson: You’ve got big wigs in the business, and then there’s a hodgepodge of guys doing smaller stuff, just copying (competitors’ quality work). Nishimura: What have you learned over time about surviving as a craftsman? Nelson: I have a dollar amount I want to make each month. The most important thing is to charge for your work. In response to the recent incident where several individuals were sent to the hospital from a local bathhouse, the authorities have issued an official statement addressing the situation. The incident occurred at a popular bathhouse in the city, where a number of patrons began experiencing symptoms of dizziness, nausea, and fainting. Emergency services were called, and the affected individuals were promptly transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
During her appearance on Podcast and Chill with MacG this week, DA Federal Council Chair Helen Zille addressed what she described as “manufactured truths” around her “colonialism” tweet. Among other interesting topics, such as uncovering the story of Steve Biko’s death as journalist, she also shared her views on the country’s various presidents since 1994. Podcast host, Macgyver Mukwevho aka MagG, started his deep-dive interview on a jovial note with a quip about his recent snorkeling experience in Mauritius. Helen Zille sets record straight on 2017 tweet MacG then went on to bring up “Godzille’s” controversial tweet in 2017 that not everything about colonialism was negative. According to him, her tweet was understood to imply that “life was better under apartheid”. An indignant Zille clapped back, promising the podcast host “a million rand” if he could prove that she actually tweeted those exact words. ‘Even under Zuma, the country was better than under apartheid’ “The country was much better after apartheid and even under Jacob Zuma, the country was better than under apartheid,” she stated. Zille has previously weighed in on the country under Zuma’s reign, pointing out that the former president and Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) party leader wasn’t solely responsible for state capture. Obviously that means a hell of a lot was negative, but let’s keep the stuff that wasn’t.” She added that things like formal education, hospitals, hot water, science and electricity generation were all legacies. “I was saying take what you inherit from the past, even if a lot of the past was bad, and take what you can build on and make it better.” When asked by MacG to rate South Africa’s democratically elected presidents, Zille answered that “the guy I got on best with, was the worst president”. Really wrong’,” she told MacG in reference to Zuma’s “thoughtfulness”. Zuma ‘worst president’; Mbeki ‘strongest’ – Zille In a News24 opinion piece when Zuma was incarcerated at the Estcourt Correctional Facility for contempt of court in 2021, Zille reflected on her “arch political opponent” being “unfailingly warm and humane in his treatment” of her personally. Despite praising his “kindness”, she rated the “traditionalist” Zuma as the country’s “worst president”, with Thabo Mbeki – who “doubled the economy’s growth in his 10 years” – as the “strongest president”. Stuck on an island: Mbeki or Ramaphosa? Zille chose Mbeki when asked by the popular podcast host who she would rather be stuck on an island with: President Cyril Ramaphosa or Mbeki? She explained her choice by saying: “We could have a tough debate. Thabo has courage of his convictions and is deeply intellectual... We had very interesting conversations when he was president and I was head of the DA.” Mandela ‘brilliant’ as ‘Saint Nelson’ She emphasised that every president needs to be viewed in context, stating that Nelson Mandela’s role was to be “Saint Nelson”. “We needed a Mother Theresa-type of figure who would just rise above everything and bring us together.
