From the 44-point victory over Fairleigh Dickinson University cementing Auriemma’s legacy with win No. 1,217, to the 60-plus former players who returned to Storrs on a Wednesday night in mid-November to the live goat they had at the game to honor the Greatest Of All Time, everything about the night felt perfectly scripted. Azzi Fudd managed to steal some of the spotlight away from Geno and CD by making her first appearance in a game in more than a year and receiving one of the loudest cheers of the night as she checked into the game with 3:39 to play in the first quarter. “I thought everybody was here for Azzi Fudd Night,” Auriemma said. “I was pretty excited to be part of Azzi Fudd Night.” All joking aside, Auriemma is incredibly excited by the return of Fudd, and the fans were justified in excitedly showering her with love and acknowledgment. The redshirt junior elevates the Huskies from a really good young contender into arguably the favorite to win this year’s national championship. She’s one of the best shooters in the country, and when she is healthy she can carry a team like she did the first six games of her sophomore season when she averaged 24.0 points. “It is going to be slow going in the beginning, but she changes our team,” Auriemma said. “She makes us better. Not that others can’t, but I think we would have the makings of what makes a really, really competitive team, a team that can compete for a championship.” Auriemma’s rationale is that she completes the triangle of greatness that has always allowed the Huskies to win multiple champions at a time. “You have to have great inside play, you have to have a really good wing player, and you have to have a really, really good guard,” Auriemma said. “When you look at the best teams I have had whether it was Renee (Montgomery), Maya and Tina (Charles) or Sue and Dee and they had too many with Asjha (Jones), Tamika (Williams) and Swin (Cash) or whether it was Stewie (Breanna Stewart) and (Morgan) Tuck and Moriah (Jefferson) we had all three. “I think Azzi makes us whole,” Auriemma said. “She gives us the three things we need. It is not going to show itself this week, next week or maybe the whole month of November, but when we get her fully acclimated, we are a different team.” It will take time. Fudd played only 12:27 and finished with four points on 1-for-4 shooting including three missed 3-pointers. But after rehabbing the torn ACL in her knee for the past year, she overcame the biggest hurdle which was simply getting back on the court. “I was looking at the schedule, and I wanted to wait at least a year after surgery until I came back,” Fudd said. “After talking to the doctors, (strength and conditioning coach Andrea) Hudy and (athletic trainer) Janelle (Francisco) and with the tough games coming up, this was the best game that would give me enough time to prepare and get myself back into game mode with everyone else. “I chose this game with the staff and doctors and didn’t realize this was the big 40th and most winningest celebration. It happened perfectly, and I am so grateful to have played in this game and been part of it. “It felt incredible. I had a lot of nerves. I am glad the game is over. The first-game jitters are hopefully done with.” On a night when so many were at Gampel to honor the past, Fudd gave them all reason to dream about the future while she enjoyed a long-awaited opportunity to just enjoy being in the present no matter what the results were. So much of her career has been in flux. She’s missed more games (73) than she has played (43), and prior to Wednesday night, she had played only 17 games with Paige Bueckers. She said she clearly had some anxiety, but Bueckers helped her work through that. One second after Fudd subbed into the game, Bueckers ran an out of bounds play to get Fudd a 3-point attempt. She missed it, but on the very next possession the Huskies got her the ball again, she was fouled, went to the free throw line and sank her two shots. “I was nervous but so excited and happy to be out there,” Fudd said. “I was talking to Paige about it earlier. I just wanted to play. I was nervous for this, nervous to not play well. She said, ‘It doesn’t matter as long as you are out there. You can miss, you can air ball, you can do whatever, but you are out there playing.’ “So I took that to heart. I could have made all my shots. I could have missed all my shots. Small's layup with under 2 minutes left in OT gave West Virginia a 79-75 lead. After a Gonzaga miss, Sencire Harris hit two free throws to make it a six-point lead. With 27.1 seconds left, Harris made a steal and scored on a dunk for an eight-point lead, putting the game out of reach. Amani Hansberry scored a career-high 19 points and Toby Okani added 10 for West Virginia (3-2). Braden Huff scored 19 points and Khalif Battle 16 for Gonzaga (5-1). Gonzaga showed its depth, outscoring the West Virginia bench 30-2. West Virginia’s only loss was by 24 points at Pitt, but the rebuild under Darian DeVries is showing promise. Gonzaga turned it over at midcourt late in regulation when Tucker DeVries poked it away from Nolan Hickman and raced the other way before getting fouled. DeVries made two free throws with 5.9 seconds left to tie it at 71-all. Battle inbounded the ball and got it back, but lost control on a drive as time expired. The shorter Mountaineers outrebounded Gonzaga 42-36 and shot 50% in the second half, battling the Zags to a draw in the paint. Nembhard had 12 assists and just one turnover in 43 minutes, but was 1 of 10 from the field. West Virginia will play Louisville on Thursday in the winner's bracket.
