kijiji toronto THE NHS has issued a "stay home" warning as cases of norovirus surge - and common protection won't work. The contagious stomach bug spreads easily through close contact and eating food prepared by infected people - a stomach-turning prospect as families gathered together for festivities. Cases of norovirus surged by 33.2 per cent in the two weeks between November 18 and December 1, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said. The total amount of infections reported was more than double the number of cases usually seen at this time of year - amounting to an 114 per cent increase. Now the NHS provided an update to social media on Friday. It advised: "Norovirus is a stomach bug that causes diarrhoea and vomiting. "It can be very unpleasant, but usually goes away in about 2 days. If you catch it; stay home, rest and have plenty of fluids." Common symptoms of the dreaded bug include nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Often accompanied with these symptoms is a high fever, headaches, and limb pains. These tend to appear one or two days after infection. The key guidance also stresses the importance of avoiding work or school until those affected are symptom-free for 48 hours. This is especially important without vomiting or diarrhoea due to the contagious nature of the virus in this timeframe. It is also recommended to stay away from hospitals and care homes to prevent any more spreading of the virus. The NHS has also stressed the importance of hand washing with soap and water to stop norovirus from spreading. Alcohol-based sanitisers aren't effective against it, which is important to note. The virus can usually be managed at home with enough rest and hydration. However it's advised to call 111 if you're concerned about a baby under one years old. UKHSA said multiple factors could be behind the surge in norovirus cases, including the increased use of PCR multiplex technology for testing - which is capable of detecting multiple gastrointestinal pathogens in one test - as well as changes to the bug after the Covid-19 pandemic. The health watchdog also noted "the emergence of an unusual norovirus genotype" dubbed GII.17. So far into the 2024/2025 norovirus season, a whopping 89 per cent of samples belonged to norovirus genogroup 2 (GII). Of these, 66.3 per cent of cases were attributed to the GII.17 genotype. "An increase of this variant has also been observed in other counties during 2024 and is being closely monitored," UKHSA noted. "At present there is no indication it leads to more severe illness." The health watchdog said there were probably more norovirus cases than data indicates. "Lab reports represent just a small proportion of total norovirus cases," UKHSA explained. "It has been estimated that for every case of norovirus reported to national surveillance in the UK there are about 288 in the community that go unreported, representing an annual burden of around 3 million cases." Norovirus symptoms tend to inclue nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. But sufferers can also be struck with a high temperature, stomach pain and aching limbs. People can be at risk of dehydration after getting infected with norovirus, especially young children and older or immunocompromised people. If you do get ill it is important to drink plenty of fluids during that time, to replenish those lost through diarrhoea and vomiting. Symptoms tend to strike suddenly but you will usually start to feel better within two or three days. It's important that you stay off school or work until you have not been sick or had diarrhoea for at least two days, as this is when you're most infectious. If you think you have norovirus, stay hydrated, rest, and eat bland foods when you feel better. Wash hands often, disinfect surfaces, and avoid contact with others until 48 hours after symptoms stop. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe or prolonged. When it comes to treatment, focus on staying hydrated with water or electrolyte drinks. Rest as much as possible. Eat bland foods like toast or crackers, rice, pasta. For symptom relief, consult your doctor about over-the-counter options. Symptoms should go away in one to three days. If you or your child experiences the following, you should call 999 or go to A&E: Source: Dr Bruno Silvester Lopes, Lecturer in Microbiology at Teesside University and NHS

J.K. Dobbins and Alohi Gilman are placed on injured reserve by ChargersMEMPHIS, Tenn. - A Tennessee state senator is speaking out again against Shelby County General Sessions Judge Bill Anderson and Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy. Sen. Brent Taylor (R-Memphis) released courtroom audio of the hearing where Anderson released a man accused of shooting his co-worker at the FedEx World Hub last month on his own recognizance. Taylor’s take on Judge Anderson releasing people accused of serious violent crimes is no secret. Taking to the social media platform X, Taylor said he got his hands on audio of the hearing where Judge Anderson released accused gunman and 18-year-old Tyreese Earnest from jail on his own recognizance. RELATED: Emergency appeals filed by District Attorney in multiple violent offender cases, records show “You have an opportunity to do something with your life. You got to wake up, you put yourself in a tough position, but anything in the world you have to do, whether it be here, where you are or wherever it is, you have a chance to become a real man,” Anderson told Tyreese Earnest, according to the audio recording. According to investigators, Earnest and two others are accused of ambushing a coworker when he got to his vehicle in the FedEx Hub Employee parking lot last month. RELATED: Three men arrested in shooting of fellow FedEx employee, records show “I'm going to give you a chance to get your act together. But I'm going to watch you like a hawk in every court hearing. I'm going to have in the courtroom this week after what you had done, the fact that I know if I see one negative, one negative, he didn't call it anything like you supposed to,” Anderson told Earnest, according to the audio. Investigators identified Earnest as the shooter from surveillance video. A judicial commissioner set bail for Earnest at $200,000. That bail was later erased to nothing after Judge Anderson reviewed the case and decided to release Earnest on his own recognizance. RELATED: Man accused in FedEx parking lot shooting released on his own recognizance In his post, Taylor called out Mulroy for failing to not aggressively argue for a high bond for Earnest. FOX13 reached out to the DA’s office about the authenticity of the recording. A spokesperson confirmed it is real but incomplete. The statement said the recording was delayed and much of the prosecution’s argument is not captured. The DA's statement is below: "While the audio is authentic, it is incomplete, and failing to acknowledge that is highly misleading. Here's what happened: During the bail hearing, the prosecutor argued against the ROR and advocated for maintaining the bond. She specifically cited: the violent nature of the crime, the potential loss of life, the strength of the case, and the risk of flight. Unfortunately, a delay in activating the court recorder — an occasional issue in General Sessions Court, which is not a court of record — resulted in much of the argument not being captured. This context is important to clarify. The prosecutor is a seasoned attorney with over a decade of military prosecutorial experience. It is disappointing that narratives are being formed without consulting our office, as this undermines the work of our more than 100+ prosecutors who do this work every day. Misrepresenting their efforts is a disservice to the community." Anderson also released on their own recognizance, also known as ROR, the other two suspects connected to the shooting: twin brothers Jamarcus and Jamarion Odell. All three were given rules that must be followed or they return to jail with their bail doubled. “I only need one thing and you're going right back. And this time that you have now, it's going away. It's going to be doubled. So it's going to be $400,000 if you don't follow the rules. I don't know what this case is about yet, but I also realize when this case comes up for hearing, it continues to make no sense to me,” Anderson told Tyreese Earnest in audio recording. Below are some of the posts Sen. Taylor made Saturday on the social media platform X: "I have obtained the audio (link in comments) for the hearing where so-called Judge Anderson unacceptably granted a ROR to dangerous criminal Tyreese Earnest. Frankly, this whole bond hearing involving Judge Anderson and DA Mulroy’s office (expletive) me off! It highlights what is so wrong with our justice system in Shelby County. I recommend turning on alerts for my social media posts as I will be posting a series of informative explanations on what went wrong in this hearing. I know this hearing is long, but I also recommend listening to it for yourself to assess whether what the DA’s office is saying occurred actually happened. This grave injustice is made worse by misrepresentations from DA Mulroy, and the public should be outraged by his disingenuousness. In today’s post, I’d like to address the Assistant District Attorney’s failure to aggressively argue for a high bond to protect our community. Despite DA Mulroy stating “the DA’s office opposed lower bond and ROR”, the ADA in this case was as weak as a kitten’s meow. I never heard the Assistant District Attorney ask for a high cash bail and was not nearly forceful enough in fighting for bail. The ADA would have been just as effective sitting in the audience watching the proceeding as a spectator. Please don’t take my word for it, listen for yourself! I do not know what it will take for DA Mulroy to stop hiring defense attorneys, public defenders, and kids right out of law school as prosecutors and instead hire and train aggressive prosecutors! Our public and crime victims need aggressive prosecutors and not progressive prosecutors. At this time I don’t know who the ADA was at the hearing, but what we can hear is very different than what DA Mulroy presented to the public. Shelby County has a Judge Anderson and DA Mulroy problem. This lack of honesty from our community’s top prosecutor is unacceptable, and I am madder than a mosquito at a wax museum about it. To Make Memphis Matter, we need a well-trained and aggressive team of attorneys fighting for our community’s safety in the DA’s office. Unfortunately, it appears we have Restorative Justice Schemers like Decarcerate Memphis and Just City running our criminal justice system. I plan to change that!" FOX13 reached out to Mulroy's office on Saturday following Sen. Taylor's social media posts and his office issued the following the statement: "At the Tyrese Earnest bail hearing, the prosecutor clearly argued for keeping the bond amount the same and against any ROR. Unfortunately, the court failed to record the majority of the state’s argument at the hearing’s very beginning. This happens on occasion because General Sessions is not a court of record, and court staff must turn the recorder on, which sometimes includes a lag. Nonetheless, the ADA, a veteran with over a decade of experience as a military prosecutor, noted the violent nature of the crime; the fact that someone could have died; the strength of the prosecution’s case; the serious prison time the defendant was facing; and thus the significant risk of flight, all of which counseled against ROR. Had the senator taken the time to consult with us before making his public statement, we could have explained this to him. People without courtroom experience can confuse a professional tone with a lack of passion. Lawyers know that, unlike on TV, a vociferous argument can sometimes be counterproductive. Bottom line: There is no stronger response to a bail decision than a writ to appeal it, which we began drafting immediately. Senator Taylor’s criticism of our office’s advocacy is ill-informed and unfair." CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD Trending stories:

The outcome of the Maharashtra and Jharkhand election has been both along expected lines and at the same time shocking. In Maharashtra, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance has pulled off a stunning victory that far overshot the predictions. The BJP itself has won the largest number of seats, so it is no longer entirely dependent on the allies to form the government but whom it will still take along. As for the other parties, the election has thrown up an interesting outcome: the breakaway factions of Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have bagged several times more seats than the parent parties. So, the rebels like Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar now effectively take over as the authentic leaders of Shiv Sena and the NCP while Udhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar now head the rumps of these organizations. Going forward, Thackeray and senior Pawar are likely to become irrelevant to Maharashtra politics and, in turn, to national politics. Congress, on the other hand, has been decimated in the state. The second successive loss for the party after Haryana and abysmally poor performance in J&K have left the party reeling. It is difficult to explain as to what happened in just four months after the general elections, in which the party had staged a comeback of sorts. It is almost as if the Congress gets its act together in spasms and then goes back into the complacent mode. In general elections, it was Maharashtra that along with Uttar Pradesh, had played a crucial role in stopping the BJP juggernaut short of an absolute majority. Now Maharashtra has given the saffron party most of the seats in the Assembly polls. What it shows is that the BJP has been quick to learn its lessons and tailor its election strategy to the aspirations of the voters. The BJP is also a 24×7 party. It’s already vaunted election machinery keeps working while other parties are fast asleep. More so, the Congress whose top leaders take a political sabbatical after every election. And if the Rahul Gandhi-led party and the larger opposition fail to dissect what went wrong in Maharashtra and then act on it, it bodes ill for their future.

RJ Thompson scored 23 points -- including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 56 seconds left -- as Charleston Southern shocked host Miami 83-79 on Saturday afternoon. Miami entered the game as a 23.5-point favorite. Charleston (2-7) won its first game of the season away from home after losing its previous six road or neutral-court contests. The Buccaneers also got 21 points from Thompson Camara and 20 points and 11 rebounds from Taje' Kelly. Camara match his previous career point total. Miami (3-4), playing at home for the first time in two weeks, lost its fourth straight game. Brandon Johnson led Miami with 23 points and freshman Austin Swartz scored a career-high 15. Swartz entered the game averaging just 2.3 points For the first time this season, Miami was without Nijel Pack, who has a lower-body injury. Pack leads the team in scoring (15.2) and assists (4.7). With Pack out, five-star freshman Jalil Bethea made his first start and had six points. The game featured quite a contrast in coaches. Miami's Jim Larranaga, 75, has won 743 games in 41-plus seasons. Charleston Southern's Saah Nimley, 31, is in his full first season as a head coach. He was named interim coach in November 2023. In the first half, Miami raced to a 17-10 lead. However, Charleston Southern posted an 11-0 run to grab a 21-17 advantage. The Hurricanes lost control late in the first half as Miami's Johnson hit a 3-pointer and was hit with a technical foul for taunting. Later in the first half, Larranaga was also hit with a technical. By the end of the half, the Buccaneers led 45-37. Camara led Charleston Southern with 16 first-half points on 6-for-7 shooting, including 4-of-5 on 3-pointers. Johnson scored 12 for Miami in the opening half, all on 3-pointers. In the second half, Charleston Southern stretched its lead to 13. Miami rallied as the clock wound down. With 38 seconds left, Miami called a timeout while trailing 81-79. With 15 seconds left, Swartz missed a 3-pointer and the Buccaneers got the rebound. Daylen Berry made two free throws with 11 seconds left to ice the game. Up next, Miami will host No. 19 Arkansas on Tuesday night as part of the ACC/SEC Challenge. Charleston Southern will return home to face Tennessee-Martin on Tuesday night. --Field Level Media

Lululemon Athletica Inc.'s chief executive is confident his company is well on its way to addressing some of the concerns customers and analysts had earlier in the year about a lack of newness in the brand's product assortment. After reorganizing the retailer's product team and introducing a new reporting structure, Calvin McDonald said Lululemon is on track to reach historical levels of newness by the first quarter of its fiscal 2025. "I feel good about the quality and quantity of newness the teams have planned and I believe we are well positioned for spring," he said on a Thursday call with analysts. Newness — how fresh a brand's products and styles appear to consumers — is one of the key ways retailers draw in customers. To give the impression of newness, apparel companies often experiment with colours, prints, patterns and silhouettes. Some also partner with celebrities or other brands to launch product lines that attract shoppers. Lululemon's efforts to boost newness have so far focused on new detailing applied to some of its Define jackets and the release of its velvet Scuba hoodies, satin running tights and shorts and waffle knit apparel. "The guest is responding very well to that," McDonald said. In August, he conceded that Lululemon's womenswear division had struggled with “reduced newness,” which impacted conversion rates — typically the percentage of people who visit a store and make a purchase before leaving. Lululemon's product assortment this year has focused largely on its staples — yoga pants, scuba hoodies and sports bras — while the company also saw continued success with its belt bags. However, there were some missteps. When Lululemon outfitted Team Canada at the Olympic Games in Paris, the uniform was criticized for resembling uncooked bacon or looking like it had been blood-spattered. Lululemon also paused sales of its Breezethrough product line of tights and other activewear in June. Many of the line’s pieces featured a long V-shaped waistband in the front and Y-shaped seam in the back that some consumers complained was unattractive and produced a “whale tail” look. Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData, said in a note to investors that he feels many of the newness issues "have largely been corrected." "Across the third quarter the women’s range felt fresh and interesting and there was more than enough to grab the attention of shoppers," he said, adding it had improved the company's conversation rate and average basket size, a measure of how much consumers spend. "In our view, Lululemon deserves praise for the quick course correction." Some of that correction was reflected in Lululemon's third-quarter results, which were released Thursday and showed the brand earned US$351.9 million in its latest quarter as its revenue rose nine per cent. The Vancouver-based retailer, which keeps its books in U.S. dollars, said its third-quarter net income compared with US$248.7 million a year prior. Its diluted earnings per share for the period ended Oct. 27 amounted to US$2.87 compared with US$1.96. Lululemon's third-quarter revenue totalled US$2.4 billion, compared with US$2.2 billion a year ago. McDonald said the results "exceeded our expectations" and reflected strength the company has seen in its shorts, skirts and leggings in seasonal colours. Saunders felt it was a "solid quarter," in part because Lululemon's comparable sales increased by four per cent overall and its international revenue increased by "a stellar" 33 per cent in overall terms. McDonald said that the company will enter Italy next year using a company-owned model, but will also expand to Denmark, Belgium, Turkey and the Czech Republic under a franchise model. In the latest quarter, however, there was weakness in the Americas, where Lululemon's comparable sales fell by two per cent. "There is much more competition in the US market and our data clearly show that even relatively loyal Lululemon consumers are shopping around more widely," Saunders said. "This problem isn’t going to disappear over time, if anything it is going to intensify." Shoppers, he said, had become "more constrained and pickier" because of inflation and high interest rates. "While most Lululemon shoppers are far from being hard-pressed, they are still impacted by inflation and have modestly reduced the volume of things they buy," Saunders said. He felt Lululemon should respond by leaning into categories like menswear, which Lululemon has increasingly been expanding through new styles and even partnerships with NHL teams. In more recent months, the company also introduced a range of Disney apparel. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 5, 2024. Tara Deschamps, The Canadian Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Kaapo Kaako scored a power-play goal with 24 seconds left, and the New York Rangers stopped a five-game slide by topping the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 on Saturday. Artemi Panarin, Vincent Trocheck and Mika Zibanejad also scored for the Rangers, who got their first win since a 4-3 victory at Vancouver on Nov. 19. Adam Fox had two assists, and Jonathan Quick made 25 saves. With Montreal’s Kirby Dach serving a four-minute, high-sticking penalty, Kaako got his fourth goal of the season. The Canadiens trailed 3-1 after two periods. But Cole Caufield scored his 14th goal 4:16 into the third and Nick Suzuki tied it at 14:07. OTTAWA—Key annual reports about the federal government’s finances are unusually late this year, prompting concerns that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals are showing a troubling lack of transparency around public spending. Appearing at a House of Commons Committee on Tuesday, Parliamentary Budget Officer Yves Giroux said the delays have put MPs in a “very uncomfortable” and “difficult” position. Giroux questioned the current practice of allowing the government to control when to publish these reports, which include the annual audited and the . The reports are usually published before the end of October, and show spending from the 2023-23 fiscal year that ended in March. The government also has not released a fall economic statement, a practice that usually happens in October or November to provide a budgetary update partway through the fiscal year. The situation leaves parliamentarians facing decisions on billions of dollars of proposed public spending without knowing the true state of the country’s finances, including the size of the budget deficit, Giroux said. For instance, MPs voted last week to approve the Liberal government’s proposal to temporarily remove the federal sales tax on a host of consumer goods, from beer and candy to diapers and Christmas trees, a move expected to cost more than $1 billion. “It’s not the way to have sound management of public funds,” Giroux said in French. Later, in English, he told MPs the delayed fiscal reporting “negatively impacts your capacity to make or suggest trade-offs when it comes to spending and revenues.” Giroux’s predecessor as Parliamentary Budget Officer, Kevin Page, is also expressing concern about a “significant delay” in producing the reports. Both of them, he said, are typically published before the end of October. “You need this level of transparency,” Page told the Star. “There’s no documents, and the government should be held accountable.” Robert Asselin, a former adviser to prime ministers Paul Martin and Trudeau who is now at the Business Council of Canada, said it is possible the government is hesitant to publish the numbers because they failed to meet their own targets for fiscal constraint. These include pledges to restrict the 2023-24 deficit to $40 billion, cap the spending shortfall at one per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) by 2026, and ensure that the government’s ratio of debt to GDP gets smaller each year going forward. “There’s no real precedent on being that late on reporting on how the government of Canada is spending its money,” Asselin said. “This is Canadians’ money at the end of the day. They should know how the government is spending it.” Asked Tuesday about the delayed reports, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland repeatedly refused to explain why they have not been published. She denied, however, that they have not been released for political reasons, such as to delay releasing bad news about government overspending. “They’ll be published this year,” Freeland said, adding that the government also intends to table a fall economic statement. Bill Matthews, a top-level bureaucrat at the federal Treasury Board, said the “final version” of the Public Accounts is currently with the auditor general’s office, “and we are collaborating to finalize” that report. Later at the committee, Giroux raised questions about whether the government will be able to stick to its self-imposed fiscal targets. Earlier this fall, his office published a that predicted the government blew past its promise to limit the deficit with an estimated $46.8-billion shortfall last fiscal year. On top of the overall deficit level, Giroux said Tuesday the Liberals’ commitment to a declining debt-to-GDP ratio “will be at high risk this year” — especially if the almost $6 billion in new spending from the sales tax holiday and $250 cash handouts the government has promised coincide with Parliament’s failure to pass legislation to hike capital gains taxes, a move that is expected to raise $19 billion over five years. The House of Commons has been paralyzed for weeks over a Conservative effort to push the government to disclose documents relating to alleged corruption at a green technology agency. “That would mean that some revenues, several billion dollars that the government was or is banking on this fiscal year, probably won’t happen if that legislation is not passed,” Giroux said. On Tuesday, Freeland did not say whether the government has maintained its budgetary targets, but insisted that Ottawa remains in a “strong fiscal position.” For Asselin, from the business council, the delayed fiscal reports make him suspect the “numbers are not great.” It also raises questions about a government that appears to be “improvising” in the face of various significant challenges, he said. “After nine years in office, not being able to be timely on budget release and fiscal update release — I think it’s not a great sign of how the government is organized and how it functions.”Robbins LLP Urges V Stockholders with Large Losses to Contact the Firm for Information About ...
