And that’s inconvenient timing, considering Joe Biden’s team, fresh off a foreign trip, must shift quickly into legacy mode. When the president awkwardly, and to tepid applause this week in Angola, touted the domestic infrastructure law he helped craft, it seemed clear his legacy was on his mind. But the effectiveness of any coming sales pitch will likely be hamstrung by his pardon of son Hunter Biden , who was convicted on federal gun charges and had pleaded guilty on federal tax evasion charges. The move — which he’d previously said he wouldn’t make — has been slammed by Republican lawmakers and more than a few Democrats and its rationale lambasted by a federal judge. Karine Jean-Pierre, the president’s top spokesperson and chief image defender, told reporters, as she has so many times over the years, that they simply should not trust their lyin’ eyes — and ears. “One of the things that the president always believes is to be truthful to the American people. That is something that he always truly believes,” she said Monday, while en route to Africa aboard Air Force One, of Biden’s about-face Biden returned to Washington early Thursday morning from his multiday Angola visit, and there was no daily press briefing scheduled as travel-weary staffers, including Jean-Pierre, got some needed rest. She could return to the lectern in the White House briefing room as early as Friday. But the pardon drama has created a complication — for both the president and press secretary. After all, Biden on numerous occasions told interviewers and shouting White House press corps members that he would not pardon his troubled son. The former two-term vice president and longtime senator did so for over a year with very non-politician answers — meaning, he was both concise and clear. One example came on June 6 in France , when ABC News anchor David Muir asked Biden if he had ruled out a pardon for his son. “Yes,” Biden replied, without adding a qualifier that might be useful down the road if he reversed himself. The same goes for Jean-Pierre, who had also fielded many questions about a possible pardon. At one September 2023 briefing, this was her reply to the Hunter leniency question: “I’ve answered this question before. It was asked of me not too long ago, a couple weeks ago, and I was very clear, and I said, ‘No.’” Fast- forward to June of this year, and this was Jean-Pierre’s response to a similar query: “No. No. It’s a no. It will always be a no. Biden will not pardon his son Hunter.” Press secretaries are responsible for protecting the sitting president, spinning circumstances in his favor and deflecting blame elsewhere. Jean-Pierre’s answers were, at the time, rather refreshing because they were so clear and unequivocal. Then came Sunday’s sudden pardon. “The charges in his cases came about only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election. Then, a carefully negotiated plea deal, agreed to by the Department of Justice, unraveled in the courtroom — with a number of my political opponents in Congress taking credit for bringing political pressure on the process,” Biden said in an evening statement. “No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son – and that is wrong.” The Donald Trump-appointed federal judge overseeing Hunter Biden’s tax case in California strongly disagreed, stating that the president was guilty of too much revisionist history. “But two federal judges expressly rejected Mr. Biden’s arguments that the Government prosecuted Mr. Biden because of his familial relation to the President,” Judge Mark C. Scarsi, wrote in a Tuesday order responding to Hunter Biden’s notice to the court of the pardon. “And the President’s own Attorney General and Department of Justice personnel oversaw the investigation leading to the charges. In the President’s estimation, this legion of federal civil servants, the undersigned included, are unreasonable people,” Scarsi wrote, adding that “nowhere does the Constitution give the President the authority to rewrite history.” A former adviser to Barack Obama’s two successful presidential campaigns, Spencer Critchley, said he believed “Biden made the right decision, but gave the wrong explanation, and that this is likely to be how history will judge it.” “Under normal circumstances, I’d say he should have stuck with his commitment to stand clear of the justice system, however, the point this time is not to overturn past decisions, but to prevent the coming authoritarian abuses of the justice system, promised by Donald Trump and his appointees,” Critchley said in a statement Thursday. “Trump has been closely following the authoritarian playbook and dismantling the institutions of democracy. That includes turning justice into a weapon, which he has specifically promised to wheel against Hunter Biden, among many others. As the old dictator’s motto goes, ‘For my friends, anything. For my enemies, justice.'” Trying to ‘break Hunter’ But Biden’s statement went in a different direction, a parental one. It contained three sentences that the father in chief opted for months against sharing with the country, which might have explained his paternal plight. “There has been an effort to break Hunter — who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution,” Biden said. “In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me — and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough.” California Gov. Gavin Newsom, one of Biden’s top allies, said this week that he “took the president at his word” that he would not pardon his son, adding: “So by definition, I’m disappointed and can’t support the decision.” The White House is also yet to clearly explain why Biden made such a dramatic about-face. Nor have his aides spoken to why the country should still believe his declaration in the pardon announcement that “for my entire career I have followed a simple principle: just tell the American people the truth.” The irony of the current situation is as undeniable as it is surreal. After all, it was the president, Jean-Pierre and the rest of Team Biden who spent four years telling the country about the dangers of Trump’s many false statements and lies. The tarnished credibility raises questions about Biden’s forecast of the American people’s thinking about his reversal: “They’ll be fair-minded.” Whether or not that proves true is up to history. The results of last month’s presidential election suggest an electorate that had some Biden fatigue. Whenever the president or Jean-Pierre next take questions from a jilted press corps, there likely will be pointed questions about whether the White House has been truly “fair-minded” with reporters and, more importantly, the people. Not just about Hunter Biden’s case, but on a myriad of issues. The stunning reversal has clearly allowed Republicans to pounce, another self-inflicted wound to wrap a presidency colored by them. Some GOP lawmakers contended on social media that Biden’s volte-face justified their claims of a dishonest and corrupt administration and family. Several GOP sources said Trump — who faced 91 criminal charges and whom media outlets and independent fact-checkers have cited for thousands of false statements since entering the political arena — has a chance to flip yet another script on Democrats. “President Trump’s bold leadership and direct communication style bring a unique energy to governance. ... But just because Kelce and Swift are in the limelight seemingly all the time, it doesn’t mean they’re exempt from some of the team rules the Chiefs have implemented for all of their players leading up to game days. Chariah Gordon, the fiancée of Chiefs receiver Mecole Hardman, recently told People.com that there are eight rules the team has for all of its players to follow, but there are three in particular that apply to Kelce and Swift’s relationship specifically. The first is an 11 p.m. curfew for all players the night before; no exceptions. The NFL CBA states that players can be penalized for curfew violations, which fall under “conduct detrimental to the team.” The second rule is that all significant others, even wives, must stay in separate rooms the night before games. While they are allowed to stay in the same hotel, players have to sleep solo — something Gordon said the team is really strict about. The third rule is that all players must get directly onto the team plane after away games and no significant others are allowed to tag along. Become a Member Corky Lee was affectionately known as Asian America’s “unofficial photographer laureate.” Put together by his family and friends after his untimely death from COVID-19, Corky Lee’s Asian America: Fifty Years of Photographic Justice (2024) is, in essence, a retrospective, presenting his works in roughly chronological order, interspersed with essays from loved ones, colleagues, and even the subjects of his images. Lee began photographing in the 1970s while working as a young community activist in New York City’s Chinatown. Unsurprisingly, the book is, in one dimension, an ode to the neighborhood, not as a tourist destination but as a lived-in community and hotbed of social justice movements. From the start, Lee’s motives were social. He took photos of everything and everyone, from everyday people dancing, lifting weights, or simply standing outside their favorite restaurants, to Asian American icons like Yuri Kochiyama and Yo-Yo Ma. But what he loved photographing more than anything was social justice in action. He captured, among other moments, incidents of police brutality, the pain of the South Asian community post-9/11, and the rampant spread of hate crimes against Asians during COVID-19. The result in Corky Lee’s Asian America is a stunning glimpse into the fight for racial justice over the last half-century — one many Americans haven’t seen. Mainstream news sources did not capture Chinatown landlord-tenant disputes or protests for a neighborhood health center, as Lee did. It did not focus on Asian American opposition to the Vietnam War, as Lee did in a particularly arresting photo of activist Grace Lee Boggs holding a megaphone at a rally in front of the Washington Monument. His work was not merely photojournalism but also art in its own right. His favorite of his own works was a revision of Andrew Russell’s historic 1869 photograph of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad , which leaves out the Chinese laborers who built most of the western railways. In his 2014 revision, Lee gathered 250 Asian Americans of all ages, including descendants of the original railroad workers, at Promontory Point in Utah; they stand together before two trains facing each other, their expressions ranging from morose to neutral to joyous as the sparse Great Basin landscape stretches on behind them. Daily Weekly Opportunities Readers might understandably criticize the book for focusing on the Chinese American story within the greater Asian American narrative, especially while boasting such a sweeping title . But though Lee started off photographing what he knew — he once told his loved ones that Chinatown was “part of [his] soul” — he worked to broaden his focus. He knew, as his fellow social activists did, that the fates of different Asian American groups are tied together. He photographed Japanese Americans celebrating their Obon Buddhist festival, the Filipino American community’s Flores de Mayo festival, Sikh Americans holding a candlelight vigil in New York after 9/11, and many other instances of a diverse Asian America. Some might also wonder if the book is a little overly didactic. The editors provide extensive sociohistorical context, which at times comes across as dry, such as discussion about the United States census in the introduction to Lee’s photographs from the 1980s and 1990s. Yet that educational bent resonates with Lee’s goals: He was, as his friend, professor Mae Ngai, writes, an “activist-photographer.” People of Asian descent have lived in this country for almost as long as it’s existed, and yet the primary Asian American condition is still invisibility — Corky Lee’s Asian America renders them visible . Authorities charged Chelsea O'Donnell with two counts of felony possession of methamphetamine along with the felony charge of possession of narcotic drugs, according to court records viewed by Fox News Digital. She was also charged with two counts of possession/illegally obtaining prescription drugs and resisting or obstructing an officer. Chelsea also now faces two felony charges of bail jumping. Actor Keanu Reeves has said he joined the cast of Sonic The Hedgehog 3 as he is “a big fan” of the series. Reeves, 60, plays Shadow in the latest film adaption of the Sega video game, which will see Sonic, Knuckles and Tails battle him to protect the planet. Speaking at the movie’s London premiere on Tuesday, the Canadian star said: “I’m a big fan, I mean, I really enjoyed the first two films. “I really liked the character of Shadow, so I was really excited to try to be a part of it.” The Matrix actor went on to speak about the differences between voice acting and appearing on screen. He added: “It’s fun to play pretend, I love acting, so it’s fun to try and inhabit another character. “There’s an intensity to doing voice work and specificity, it’s kind of more like doing, it’s its own thing, because it’s kind of like theatre, but no audience. “So it’s like doing radio, and it’s just fun.” Canadian-American actor Jim Carrey co-stars as villain Doctor Eggman, a role he told the PA news agency it was “great” to be playing again. The launch of its own line of foundation models marks Amazon’s latest push to strengthen its position against forerunners Microsoft, Google, Meta and OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Until now, Amazon’s AI offerings through its AWS cloud service had largely been limited to providing access to models from other companies, including Anthropic, an AI startup it backs. Even if Google, Microsoft and OpenAI have taken the lead on AI, AWS remains the market leader in cloud computing, which is needed to power AI tools and products. “Inside Amazon, we have about 1,000 Gen AI applications in motion, and we’ve had a bird’s-eye view of what application builders are still grappling with,” said senior vice president Rohit Prasad, who is leading the company’s AI efforts. “Our new Amazon Nova models are intended to help with these challenges,” he added. The Amazon Nova family includes six AI models handling tasks from text creation to video generation. The company said the models are at least 75 per cent cheaper than comparable offerings available on AWS servers and faster than similar models. The initial lineup includes Nova Micro for fast text processing, Nova Lite for basic multimedia tasks, and Nova Premiere, set for an early 2025 release, for complex reasoning. Supporting 200 languages, the models can be customised using customers’ proprietary data – a feature Amazon hopes will attract enterprises developing specialised AI applications. Two dedicated models target creative content: Nova Canvas for image generation and Nova Reel for video creation. Amazon emphasised built-in safety measures for the new offerings, which will be available through AWS’s Bedrock service, with usage guidelines detailing specific use cases and limitations.
