VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) — Valparaiso hired longtime Marietta coach Andy Waddle as its new football coach, athletic director Laurel Hosmer announced Monday. Waddle is scheduled to be formally introduced on campus Wednesday. He spent the last 12 seasons turning around the Division III program located in Southeastern Ohio. There, he went 55-61 after inheriting a winless team. He led the Pioneers to their first 8-0 start last season and matched the 1920 squad's school record with a 13-game winning streak that started in 2023. In 2024, Marietta made its first postseason appearance since 1973. Waddle went 16-5 over the past two seasons and produced seven winning records over the last eight seasons. The Pioneers had only two winning seasons in the previous 20 years. “I think there is a great group of young men on the (Valparaiso) roster, and we’re excited to invest in those student-athletes and continue to add more high-quality people and football players to the program,” Waddle said of the program located in Indiana's northwest corner. “I think Valpo is not only an outstanding fit for me professionally, but also an outstanding fit for me and my family.” Waddle spent eight seasons working with the defense as an assistant for his alma mater, Wittenberg, where he was an all-conference defensive back. He also has coached at Mansfield University in Pennsylvania and at Maryville College in Tennessee. “His experience building success and winning culture as a head coach, passion for developing student-athletes on and off the field and high character made it clear he was the right leader for our football program,” Hosmer said in a statement. The move comes two weeks after Hosmer announced the school would not give Landon Fox a contract extension after his deal expired. Fox was 21-42 in six seasons at Valparaiso. ( MENAFN - APO Group) The government will enhance support for the Kenya Navy to boost its ability to safeguard the country's maritime borders. President William Ruto said this will include investing in advanced technologies and modernising the navy's fleet. He said the government will also bolster the skills and operational capacity of navy personnel. “Our singular focus will be on maintaining a high state of readiness to ensure that we respond swiftly and effectively to an increasingly dynamic security environment,” he said. Speaking during the Kenya Navy's 60th anniversary at the Kenya Navy Base, Mtongwe, in Mombasa County, he commended the navy for its unwavering commitment to safeguard the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity. “The strategic importance of the Kenya Navy cannot be overstated. It serves as a deterrent to external aggression, a safeguard of our sovereignty and a defender of our territorial integrity,” he said. He noted that, even though the navy is the youngest branch of the Kenya Defence Forces, its track record is one to be proud of. “As Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, I am immensely proud of KDF's achievements as an institution, and particularly of the Kenya Navy,” he said. The President said the Navy has been instrumental in unlocking Kenya's immense untapped potential in the blue economy. “By investing in maritime infrastructure and enhancing its security, we not only improve our naval capabilities but also create opportunities for wealth generation and job creation,” he said. President Ruto commended the synergy between the navy and the Kenya Coast Guard Service, which formed the cornerstone of Kenya's National Maritime Defence Strategy. He stated that the two institutions protect the country's coastline, combat illegal activities, secure maritime resources and safeguard sea lanes of communication and trade. “Their collaboration exemplifies the spirit of multi-agency synergy and the whole-of-government approach that is essential to our national security,” he said. President Ruto, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, called on members of the disciplined forces to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and excellence. “By working together as one team, we will overcome any challenge, transcend every obstacle, navigate the uncertainties of the future and continue to make the Kenya Navy a source of pride for our nation,” he added. During the colourful event, President Ruto unveiled a commemorative book, 'Kenya Navy at 60'. Chief of the Defence Forces Charles Kahariri said the Kenya Navy has continued to defend Kenyan waters and maritime interests since its establishment. “This has earned the Kenya Navy admiration both at home and abroad,” he said. Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya said Kenya Navy's contribution to the blue economy has boosted the actualisation of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda. “Our efforts in protecting our maritime ecosystems and promoting the sustainable use of maritime resources contribute to the prosperity of our nation,” he said. Meanwhile, streams of refugees crossed back into Syria from neighbouring countries, hoping for a more peaceful future and looking for relatives who disappeared during Mr Assad’s brutal rule. There were already signs of the difficulties ahead for the rebel alliance now in control of much of the country. The alliance is led by a former senior al-Qaida militant, who severed ties with the extremist group years ago and has promised representative government and religious tolerance. The rebel command said they would not tell women how to dress. “It is strictly forbidden to interfere with women’s dress or impose any request related to their clothing or appearance, including requests for modesty,” the command said in a statement on social media. Nearly two days after rebels entered the capital, some key government services had shut down after state workers ignored calls to go back to their jobs, the UN official said, causing issues at airports and borders and slowing the flow of humanitarian aid. Rebel leader Ahmad al-Sharaa, who was known by his nom de guerre Abu Mohammed al-Golani, also met with Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi Jalali for the first time. Mr Jalali stayed in Syria when Mr Assad fled and has sought to project normalcy since. “We are working so that the transitional period is quick and smooth,” he told Sky News Arabia TV on Monday, saying the security situation had already improved from the day before. At the court of Justice in Damascus, which was stormed by the rebels to free detainees, Judge Khitam Haddad, an aide to the justice minister in the outgoing government, said that judges were ready to resume work quickly. “We want to give everyone their rights,” Mr Haddad said outside the courthouse. “We want to build a new Syria and to keep the work, but with new methods.” But a UN official said some government services had been paralysed as worried state employees stayed at home. The public sector “has just come to a complete and abrupt halt,” said Adam Abdelmoula, UN resident and humanitarian co-ordinator for Syria, noting, for example, that an aid flight carrying urgently needed medical supplies had been put on hold after aviation employees abandoned their jobs. “This is a country that has had one government for 53 years and then suddenly all of those who have been demonised by the public media are now in charge in the nation’s capital,” Mr Abdelmoula told The Associated Press. “I think it will take a couple of days and a lot of assurance on the part of the armed groups for these people to return to work again.” In a video shared on a rebel messaging channel, Mr al-Sharaa said: “You will see there are skills” among the rebels. The Kremlin said Russia has granted political asylum to Mr Assad, a decision made by President Vladimir Putin. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on Mr Assad’s specific whereabouts and said Mr Putin did not plan to meet with him. Damascus was quiet Monday, with life slowly returning to normal, though most shops and public institutions were closed. In public squares, some people were still celebrating. Civilian traffic resumed, but there was no public transport. Long lines formed in front of bakeries and other food stores. There was little sign of any security presence though in some areas, small groups of armed men were stationed in the streets.

The Centre, through the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), is looking at ₹4,000 crore project where it intends to rewrite the country’s maritime history, with a strong push on highlighting the historic town of Lothal (now a UNESCO world heritage site) in Gujarat as the pivot to such trade activities. The city of Lothal will be pushed as an international tourist destination with additional investment going in towards infrastructure upgrade apart from setting up a maritime heritage complex. The infrastructure upgrade will include star-hotels from international brands, theme parks and so on, apart from a push towards promoting the inland waterways network. Components of the National Maritime Heritage Complex include a maritime museum — highlighting ancient shipbuilding, navigation techniques, and India’s role in the maritime Silk Route; waterfront development — area dedicated to preserving and displaying ancient and modern maritime technologies, including reconstructions of ancient vessels; research and education — a hub for research on maritime archaeology, history, and conservation; cultural & heritage attraction — along the trade network spanning the Indian Ocean, connecting India to Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. “We will set up the National Maritime Heritage Complex in Lothal — home to the world’s first man-made dock. Around ₹4,000 crore will be spent in developing the maritime complex and setting up allied infra that include a maritime facility, hotels to support the push as a tourist spot, theme parks and so on. Apart from government investments, we are expecting substantial PPP (public private partnerships) in setting up the supporting infra,” Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways told businessline . The PPP investments are expected to be to the tune of ₹3,000 crore-odd, sources said. Some of the hotel majors have already expressed interest to invest into complex. Phase 1A of the project — that involves setting up of galleries highlighting India’s maritime trade across States — is already underway and is expected to be completed around September 2025, Sonowal said. “By end 2029, the entire Maritime Heritage Complex project should be up and ready,” he added. According to Professor Vasant Shinde, eminent archaeologist and Advisor, NMHC, Lothal, the infrastructure upgrade, will also include a Lighthouse Museum, an open aquatic gallery, coastal State Pavilions, theme-based parks including a monument theme park, Naval theme park, Climate change theme park, Amusement park, Nature conservation park etc. Rewriting History A senior historian told businessline that India is pushing itself as a “soft power” while making a concerted effort to “record and rewrite an aspect of history that has been ignored the British narratives.” Lothal is one of the ancient cities in Indian and was an important centre of trade and craftsmanship during the Harappan Civilisation (also known as the Indus Valley Civilisation), around 4,000 to 5,000 years ago. The city was strategically situated along the coast and had a dockyard, suggesting that it was a major hub for maritime trade. Archaeological findings at Lothal include well-planned streets, a dockyard, bead-making workshops and artifacts such as pottery, jewellery and seals, which indicate the city’s role in trade networks extending to Mesopotamia and other parts of the ancient world. “The National Maritime Heritage Complex is expected to boost tourism in the region,” Minister Sonowal said. Sites like Byet Dwarka (located off the coast of the Saurashtra region in Gujarat) — also considered as another ancient port town and a religious site — could also get a fillip if the maritime heritage project picks up. World leaders have offered their condolences following the death of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter , who died Sunday at the age of 100. The 39th American president led consequential foreign policy initiatives that still endure today, including a Middle East peace deal between Israel and Egypt, the normalization of relations with China that the Richard Nixon administration initiated, and the signing of treaties that gave Panama eventual control of the Panama Canal from the U.S. Video above: President Biden speaks about the death of former President Jimmy Carter In 2002, Carter was awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development." But Carter was widely criticized for his handling of the 1979 Iran hostage crisis , in which dozens of American citizens were held captive for 444 days by Iranian revolutionaries who had stormed the U.S. embassy Tehran, angered by the United States' support of Iran's authoritarian ruler Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. His presidency will be remembered for the historic Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, and it was that lifelong dedication to peace that saw him receive the Nobel Peace prize. Motivated by his strong faith and values, President Carter redefined the post-presidency with a remarkable commitment to social justice and human rights at home and abroad. Whether supporting elections around the world and spreading healthcare solutions through the Carter Center or still building homes with Habitat for Humanity into his nineties, Jimmy Carter lived his values in the service of others to the very end. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time." Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban: "The memory of President Jimmy Carter will always be cherished in Hungary. By returning the Holy Crown to the people of Hungary at the end of the 70's, he gave freedom loving Hungarians hope in a hopeless time. I would like to express my deepest condolences to the Carter family and the American people." Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: "Jimmy Carter's legacy is one of compassion, kindness, empathy, and hard work. He served others both at home and around the world his entire life — and he loved doing it. He was always thoughtful and generous with his advice to me. My deepest condolences to the Carter family, his many loved ones, and the American people who are mourning a former president and a lifelong humanitarian. May his selfless service continue to inspire us all for years to come." Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva: "Jimmy Carter was a senator, governor of Georgia, and president of the United States. Above all, he was a lover of democracy and a defender of peace. In the late 1970s, he pressured the Brazilian dictatorship to release political prisoners. Later, as a former president, he continued to campaign for the promotion of human rights, peace, and the eradication of diseases in Africa and Latin America. Carter achieved the feat of having a job as a former president, over the decades, that was as important or even more important than his term in the White House. He criticized unilateral military actions by superpowers and the use of killer drones. He worked with Brazil to mediate conflicts in Venezuela and to help Haiti. He created The Carter Center, a world reference in democracy, human rights and dialogue. He will be remembered forever as a name that defended that peace is the most important condition for development. My condolences to his family, friends, co-religionists and compatriots at this time of farewell." Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel: "Condolences to the people and government of the United States, especially to the family and loved ones of President James Carter. Our people will remember with gratitude his efforts to improve relations, his visits to Cuba and his statement in favor of the freedom of the (Cuban) Five."FORMER Tyrone GAA star and Trillick senior football manager Jody Gormley has died aged 53. He had been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer earlier this year. His brother Damian confirmed the news on social media on Monday evening. He said: "It is with profound sadness that I announce my brother Jody passed away peacefully this evening." His club Trillick St Macartans posted an emotional tribute on their Facebook page , saying the entire community was “devastated”. A spokesperson said: "The words cannot describe the heartache our club is feeling right now. "Jody was a true red from a young age, playing from underage to senior level. To then managing our senior team to an historical double in 2023. "Jody played for our club from a young age and has been involved in a number of teams throughout his playing career. “He played for Tyrone and won a number of accolades including two u21 All Irelands in 1991 and 1992. “Jody played in the famous 1995 All-Ireland final and scored the only other point bar Peter Canavan’s scores. “Jody was one of a kind and when returned to Trillick brought an aura with him like no other. “Throughout his time with Trillick as player and more recently as a manager he has made an impression on everyone - coaches, players and club members of all levels in a short period of time. "A lot of people will have learnt a lot from him and how to hold themselves. Jody truly is an inspiration, forever our hero and forever a red. "Our most sincere and heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with Jody’s family, his wife Deidre, daughters Áine and Niamh and son James. His mother Shiela, brothers Damian and Eoin and sister Anita.” Gormley initially played for Tyrone between 1995 and 1998, helping his county win the Ulster Championship in his debut season, where they lost to Dublin in the All-Ireland Final. After moving to London in 1999 for work, Gormley played for the county team for two years before returning to his native county for a short stint in 2002. Following his retirement, Gormley went on to manage Down and Antrim's senior football teams. Following his diagnosis of terminal liver cancer, Gormley said he had “no fear whatsoever of dying”. Speaking to BBC NI’s GAA Social podcast last month, he said: "I have no fear of dying. "No fear of dying whatsoever. I’ve felt blessed my entire life. "The sadness is the people you’re leaving behind." Though Gormley expressed his pain of not getting to see his son play for Trilick before he would pass. He continued: "I’ll not get to see him play and I’ll not get to see my family grow up and mature. "That’s not scary but sad really. That’s the reality. "When you peel it all back, it’s the people close to you that you’re not going to have those experiences with. "That is the genuine sadness, there’s no being tough around that, that’s the reality." "I think it’s important, for me anyway, to show that even if you’re facing the ultimate challenge that you can be resilient. "It’s important for my family to show strength of character and the people around me. ‘It’s an opportunity for me to show that yeah just because you have a terminal illness doesn’t mean your life is over. "I intend to go out with a bang, I’m not going to lie down in the corner. "People need different role models and I suppose in my role in my life as a teacher and a coach, I’ve had that role. "This an opportunity to show that you can keep on going and if somebody finds something of use in it it’s worthwhile." Podcast host Thomas Niblock paid tribute to Mr Gormley following his death. He posted to X: "Jody Gormley died this evening. Life is so unfair. "I hope his family can take some comfort, in knowing that he was stunning human being. He was the best of us.”SOUTHBURY – Dorothy Judson Winship Gagnon died Monday, Nov. 25, 2024, at her son’s home in Southbury. She was born to Prentice and Vera Judson in Bethlehem in 1925, and she recently celebrated her 99th birthday on Oct. 23. Dorrie was the beloved sister of six siblings (who all predeceased her) and was the one to give care where needed, nursing her mother, mother-in-law, husband, and many others over the years. She leaves her dearest sister-in-law Joan Judson of Woodbury. Dottie married Anson Winship in 1949 and made her home in Southbury until his passing. Hard work was second nature on the family dairy farm, milking cows and operating farm equipment to harvest corn and hay. Horses were a pleasure and saddling up for an evening ride a rare treat. She loved to travel to national parks in a Volkswagen camper. A good mystery would keep her reading until deep into the night, and a sewing basket was never far away, always stitching to mend or create something new. It didn’t take much to bring her joy, be it an extra pinch of salt or a candy found. Later in life she married Joseph A. Gagnon and lived in Meriden, where his family became her family. They loved spending winters in Florida and made many friends in the years at Central Park RV. At Joe’s passing she moved to Vermont, where she relaxed and enjoyed the beauty of the Green Mountains. She might be found riding her golf cart at End of the Road Farm with Anne and Dave, or at the Old Schoolhouse Camp with Walt and Pat, enjoying a lively card game, one of her greatest pleasures. She will be very sadly missed by all who knew her, especially her children Anne (David) Kehmna, Walter (Pat) Winship, daughter-in-law Martha Winship, nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her son Peter Winship. Friends may gather at the Southbury location of Munson Lovetere Funeral Home, 235 Main St. North, on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a short service at 1 p.m. A private burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
