As the US yields on climate leadership, China rises to fill the voidATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons are back in first place in the NFC South and again in control of their playoff hopes. Rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. showed the poise in his first NFL start the Falcons will need to take advantage of their opportunity to end a six-year playoff drought. Powered by a big-play defense that produced two pick-6s, a solid starting debut by Penix and two rushing touchdowns by Bijan Robinson, the Falcons cruised past the hapless New York Giants 34-7 on Sunday. On Sunday night, the Falcons (8-7) received the assist they needed when Tampa Bay lost at Dallas . Because the Falcons swept the Buccaneers, they hold the tiebreaker advantage if they remain tied atop the division. The Falcons have games remaining at Washington on Sunday night and at home against Carolina to close the regular season. If Atlanta wins both games, it would win the division and have a home playoff game. The Falcons are assured of their best record since a 10-6 finish under coach Dan Quinn in 2017, their most recent playoff season. Quinn is in his first season as Washington’s coach and has led the Commanders (10-5) to three straight wins, including Sunday’s 36-33 victory over Philadelphia. Penix, the No. 8 overall pick in this year’s NFL draft, was promoted after coach Raheem Morris benched Kirk Cousins. Penix completed 18 of 27 passes for 202 yards with one interception on a pass that should have been caught by tight end Kyle Pitts. Penix is not a dual-threat quarterback, but he showed the ability to escape pressure in the pocket that Cousins lacks following his 2023 Achilles tendon injury. The left-hander’s superior arm strength also was immediately obvious. Robinson’s production provided a safety net for the offense which helped make for a smooth transition to Penix. Robinson had scoring runs of 2 and 4 yards. Robinson has rushed for 10 touchdowns this season. He’s the first Atlanta player with 10 more more rushing touchdowns since Devonta Freeman during the 2016 Super Bowl season. Robinson ran for 94 yards on 22 carries and had 103 yards from scrimmage. His 11th game this season with at least 100 yards from scrimmage are the most for the Falcons since Warrick Dunn’s 11 in 2005. Morris said Robinson deserves to be considered with Philadelphia’s Saquon Barkley in discussions regarding the league’s top running backs. “Bijan has been outstanding all year in the things that he’s able to do,” Morris said. “He’s special. If it wasn’t for this other guy out in Philly, he’d get a lot more recognition across the league. But that guy is having a special year, and Bijan’s not far behind him.” With kicker Younghoe Koo on injured reserve and watching from the sideline, Riley Patterson was wide left on his first field-goal attempt from 43 yards. Patterson rebounded to make attempts from 52 and 37 yards. Jessie Bates III and Matthew Judon each had a pick-6 to highlight a day of big plays for the defense. Arnold Ebiketie had his fifth sack of the season and added a fumble recovery. Kaden Ellis added a strip-sack. He also has five sacks this season, including sacks in four consecutive games. It is the longest streak for Atlanta since Patrick Kerney had sacks in five straight games in 2001. There was some thought that a change at quarterback could be good news for Pitts, who often seemed to be missing in action with Cousins running the offense. After all, a tight end often is a natural target for quick passes from a rookie making his first start. Instead, Pitts had a poor start to the Penix era when he bobbled his first pass from the left-hander, creating an interception by cornerback Cor’Dale Flott. Pitts caught a 7-yard pass on his only other target. For the season, Pitts has 41 catches for 543 yards and three touchdowns. There will be much interest in this week’s injury report after WR Drake London (hamstring) was hurt in the second half. Morris provided an optimistic postgame outlook on London. CB Antonio Hamilton (quad) did not return after leaving the game in the first half. 8: Bates has four interceptions and four forced fumbles. His combined eight forced turnovers lead the NFL. The game against Jayden Daniels and the Commanders is a reminder Penix was only the fourth of six quarterbacks selected in the first round of the NFL draft. Daniels, from LSU, was the No. 2 overall pick behind Caleb Williams by Chicago. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

The president of the Manitoba Teachers’ Society won’t seek re-election following a first term marked by infighting and low morale across the union’s operational ranks. Shortly after the final bell rang for winter break, Nathan Martindale took to social media to announce he will carry out his two-year appointment that ends in the spring and step away from labour relations after that. “After many conversations with my family and deep reflection on their needs, I have made the decision to not run for a second term as MTS president,” he wrote in a post uploaded to Facebook Friday. Martindale, a special education resource teacher in Winnipeg, has spent the last 12 years in full-time union roles. Since the turn of the century, all of his predecessors — including former presidents James Bedford, Norm Gould, Paul Olsen, Pat Isaak, Brian Ardern and Jan Speelman — have served two consecutive terms. Bedford told the he does not know details, aside from surface-level ones, but his friend and former colleague’s departure, as well as other recent high-profile exits from MTS, suggests “something’s gone badly off the rails.” Between 2011 and 2017, Martindale represented colleagues in the Winnipeg Teachers’ Association. He later joined the union’s governing board better known as “PX” — internal shorthand for the MTS provincial executive. “I have often been required to be out of town, as well as attend numerous evening and weekend obligations, all of which have taken me away from my family,” he wrote on his personal social media page. “With the ongoing needs of my family, including supporting my child with Type 1 diabetes, I know it is now time to prioritize being present for them.” “With the ongoing needs of my family, including supporting my child with Type 1 diabetes, I know it is now time to prioritize being present for them.” Martindale first assumed an interim president role on Feb. 24, 2023 — the day of Bedford’s mid-term retirement — before he won an internal election that spring. Per union bylaws, PX members are each elected to serve a two-year appointment. The president and vice-president are eligible for re-election for one additional term. Other members can serve up to three consecutive terms. Martindale was not made available for an interview on the subject. His office indicated the union leader is not taking any reporter calls over the holidays. Among many congratulatory comments and messages of thanks that users made on his post, Bedford wrote that it was an honour to work alongside Martindale. His original comment — which has since been edited — also stated, “It is unfortunate that you will likely be replaced by someone less caring, less experienced, and less dedicated to representing all members.” It was liked by a number of union representatives, including Jonathan Waite from the Seine River Teachers’ Association, PX member Sean Giesbrecht and Chris Darazsi, president of the local in the River East Transcona School Division. Lise Legal, president of the Pembina Trails Teachers’ Association, replied with a demand for Bedford’s “beyond disrespectful” sentence be deleted. The public exchange was made against the backdrop of a third-party probe into the union’s embattled headquarters on Portage Avenue. Bedford said he made the comment out of frustration that his “extraordinarily dedicated” successor is leaving and “a great team” is falling part. The union’s work environment became “highly political” during his tenure from 2019 to 2023, he added. MTS hired a consulting firm at the start of the school year raised by staff members who are in charge of servicing more than 16,600 public school teachers. Three different people have assumed the executive director role — the non-partisan counterpart to Martindale, and senior leader in charge of managing members of Teamsters Local Union 979 — over the last 13 months. Teamsters Canada spokesman Christopher Monette, who has been critical of MTS leaders for failing to provide a harassment-free work environment and viewing staff as “adversaries,” declined to weigh in on internal politics Monday. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. “MTS has made efforts over the past months to address workplace concerns. While encouraging, we believe it is too early to provide a final assessment and will reserve further comments for now,” Monette said in an email. He noted that Teamsters continues to pursue outstanding grievances related to workplace issues that will be brought to an arbitrator in the new year. Martindale’s lengthy social media post touted negotiating the first provincewide collective agreement for teachers, navigating the classroom complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic and joining the Manitoba Federation of Labour as highlights during his time at MTS. He also acknowledged the union’s success in “slamming the door” on Bill 64, controversial Progressive Conservative proposed legislation that sought to eliminate Manitoba’s elected school boards in 2021. maggie.macintosh@freepress.mb.ca Maggie Macintosh reports on education for the . Helping to drown out the noiseMore than 18,000 people expressed interest in standing as candidates in Mexico’s first ever judicial elections in 2025, the federal government announced Monday. Arturo Zaldívar, coordinator of policy and government in the administration led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, thanked 18,447 people for registering their interest in participating in the judicial elections scheduled to be held on June 1, 2025. Zaldívar, a former Supreme Court justice who resigned in late 2023 to join Sheinbaum’s presidential election campaign team , noted that the registrations were made on an “executive power” website. Mexico’s Congress and the judiciary also accepted registrations, as they — in addition to an “executive power” committee headed up by Zaldívar — will select candidates to contest the judicial elections. The Congress received more than 11,900 registrations while the judiciary received over 3,800. Some would-be judges likely submitted registrations to the federal executive, the Congress and the judiciary. A total of 881 judges, including nine Supreme Court justices, are set to be elected by popular vote next year. Mexico’s inaugural judicial elections will take place as a result of the enactment of a controversial judicial reform that was approved by Congress in September . Sheinbaum said that the registration process for judicial aspirants — which began on Nov. 5 and concluded at midnight Monday — was “a complete success.” “[It was] something unprecedented, historic,” she said. A second round of judicial elections is scheduled to be held in 2027. Critics of the judicial reform argue that the direct election of judges will politicize the judiciary, but Sheinabum and other government officials reject claims that Mexico’s courts will lose their independence. The president asserts that a judicial overhaul via the election of judges is necessary to eliminate corruption and other ills from Mexico’s justice system. Zaldívar said that 10,862 men, 6,101 women and 106 people who identify as nonbinary successfully registered their interest in contesting next year’s judicial elections. An additional 1,378 people made errors when submitting their registrations and will therefore not be considered by the executive’s candidate evaluation committee. Zaldivar said that 480 people “aspire” to become Supreme Court (SCJN) justices. But just 27 will ultimately be selected to contest the election to win one of nine positions on the bench of Mexico’s highest court. More than 10,000 people registered their interest in contesting federal district judge elections, while over 5,000 want to stand as candidates in circuit court elections. The remainder of those who registered on the federal government website want to become electoral judges or magistrates with the Judicial Discipline Tribunal. Minerva Martínez Garza, an academic and former president of the Nuevo León Human Rights Commission, is among those hoping to win a position on the SCJN. She told the Associated Press that the election of judges will help Mexico’s justice system overcome “the legitimacy crisis” it suffers. “We need a justice system that provides results,” Martínez said, adding that the recently-enacted judicial reform will help to eradicate corruption in the judiciary and favor a more rapid delivery of justice. “This change is profound,” she said. Sergio Méndez Silva, a legal official with the Fundación para la Justicia (Foundation for Justice), a Mexico City-based non-governmental organization, has a different view about the direct election of judges. “One doesn’t choose a doctor for an operation based on popularity,” he said, explaining that a surgeon is chosen because of his or her “technical knowledge, expertise and skill.” “... The same thing [should] apply for a judge,” Méndez said. He expressed concern about the makeup of the executive, congressional and judicial committees that will assess the qualifications and experience of those vying to become judges, asserting that people aligned with the ruling Morena party are among their members. Of the 11 current SCJN justices, just three — all of whom are widely seen as sympathetic to Morena’s agenda – intend to contest the 2025 judicial elections . Over the next three weeks, the federal executive’s candidate evaluation committee will look at the qualifications and experience of those who expressed interest in becoming judges to determine whether they comply with the “formal requirements,” Zaldívar said. Among the requirements are the following: Lawmakers had proposed setting a minimum age of 35 for judges but ultimately decided against that requirement. Zaldívar said that the executive’s evaluation committee will be looking for people who are “honest, qualified” and “committed” to delivering “the justice we all expect” as well as “building a better justice system.” “It’s clear that the one we have now doesn’t satisfy the yearnings and legitimate demands of the people of Mexico,” he said. Zaldívar said that the “most suitable” candidates will be selected by Dec. 14. Those “finalists” will participate in a public interview process after which some of them will be selected as candidates via sortition , or selection by lottery. The official said that the response from Mexico’s lawyers to the call to register as judicial election candidates was “amazing.” “The results are spectacular, they exceeded all expectations, which demonstrates the interest of the people of Mexico in this process,” he said. “... It’s a historic event because for the first time we’re going to elect judges in Mexico, it’s an event that will completely transform our democratic, social and political life,” Zaldívar said. With reports from Infobae , Reforma , El Financiero and AP( MENAFN - Jordan Times) Located in the hills of northern Amman, Theodor Schneller School (TSS) stands as a minaret of hope and opportunity. Founded in 1959 with the laying of its cornerstone by his majesty Late King Hussein, TSS has become a pioneering institution in Jordan's educational Field. It combines academic and vocational training, offering a variety of programs in many fields such as automotive mechanics, carpentry and blacksmithing. Moreover, TSS embraces inclusivity, creating a nurturing environment for orphans and underprivileged students and setting a model for its commitment to social responsibility. Bridging the Gap, vocational education in Jordan in the face of rising unemployment rates among university graduates in Jordan, TSS appears as a critical solution. Many graduates struggle to secure jobs aligned with their academic qualifications, while technical and vocational sectors face a shortage of skilled workers. This reality underscores the necessity of vocational education as a strategic approach for bridging the gap between education outputs and labor market demands. Vocational education: A global perspective Globally, vocational education has gained significant traction. The fourth industrial revolution and increasing reliance on technology have fueled the demand for technical and industrial specialists. Vocational careers often offer sustainable employment and competitive wages, making them an attractive choice for young people seeking promising career paths. Fields such as electrical engineering, technical mechanics and renewable energy solutions are seeing growing demand, both locally and internationally. TSS: A Role Model for Vocational Excellence TSS stands for the potential of vocational education to drive economic growth and social equity. By equipping students with practical skills and hands-on training, the school does not only enhance productivity but also empowers young individuals to build a stable and prosperous future. Its unique model bridges the gap between education and employment, making it a cornerstone of Jordan's Vocational Education efforts. The way forward: The success of TSS highlights the need for greater investment in vocational education across Jordan. Updating curricula, improving infrastructure and providing advanced training for teachers are essential steps to replicate the school's success nationwide. Moreover, fostering partnerships between educational institutions and industries is critical to ensure that the skills are aligned with real-world market needs. Theodore Schneller School's story is not just about the success of an institution but also about a nation's commitment to empowering its youth through practical education. In a world where traditional academic paths often do not guarantee employment, TSS proves that vocational education is not just an alternative - it is a necessity. Jordan's vocational education journey begins here, but the path forward promises even greater achievements. TSS is a shining example of what is possible when education meets opportunity paving the way for a brighter future for Jordan's youth. Two places separate Edinburgh rivals Hearts and Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership table heading into gameweek 19's Boxing Day derby at Tynecastle Park. HMFC returned to winning ways before Christmas and aim for consecutive Premiership wins for the first time this season against an opponent chasing three league victories on the trot. © Imago Hearts have had an inconsistent league campaign as the midway point approaches, with Neil Critchley 's men failing to win consecutive matches. While Critchley inherited the Jam Tarts' erratic performances and results after taking charge in October, following Liam Fox 's interim spell, the Englishman has yet to find the modus operandi to secure wins consistently to rise in the standings. Hearts' latest victory, a 2-1 triumph over St Johnstone, was the club's second in three, with success before Christmas either side of a 1-0 loss at Kilmarnock. The Gorgie Boys have another chance to record back-to-back victories on Boxing Day; playing at home, where they have secured six points from the last two against Dundee FC and St Johnstone, bodes well for their prospects. Victory over their capital rivals Hibs would take them above their visitors in the standings, a result that would end the visiting club's two-match winning run. © Imago David Gray 's men have scored or conceded three goals or more in their last six Premiership matches, although the Hibees have only been on the wrong end three times: the 4-1 loss to Dundee, the 3-3 draw with Aberdeen and the 3-0 loss at Celtic. That reverse at the home of the defending champions is mollified when the results preceding it (a 3-0 win at Motherwell) and 3-1 victories over Ross County and Aberdeen are considered. Nevertheless, getting the better of their fellow Edinburgh outfit will please supporters, who aim to celebrate three Premiership victories on the trot for the first time since December 2023, when Hibs defeated Kilmarnock (1-0), Dundee (2-1) and Aberdeen (2-0). The ongoing run is the away side's longest winning streak in 12 months, highlighting the broader inconsistency in performances and results over an extended period. It remains to be seen if that changes on Boxing Day, with four of the previous five match-ups between the clubs ending in score draws and Hearts winning the other at the end of 2023. © Imago Although Frankie Kent and Calem Nieuwenhof are doubtful for Hearts, the pair of Gerald Taylor and Stephen Kingsley are not expected to play any part in the Edinburgh derby . Blair Spittal and Lawrence Shankland have each netted three goals, accounting for six of the Gorgie Boys' 20 goals, and the attackers aim to add to their tally. The pair also lead for big chances created, six for Shankland and five for Spittal, highlighting their importance to the home side's attacking game plan. Hibs will check if the trio of Marvin Ekpiteta , Rudi Molotnikov and Mykola Kuharevich are available to play on December 26; Kieron Bowie is ruled out for the visitors. Nicky Cadden has been involved in four goals and an assist this term, one shy of the team's top-ranked Martin Boyle , who has six goal involvements. With Josef Bursik now playing backup to Jordan Smith between the sticks, the Englishman could be overtaken by Hearts' Craig Gordon for clean sheets (both goalkeepers have two shutouts before round 19). Hearts possible starting lineup: Gordon; Forrester, Oyegoke, Rowles, Penrice; Boateng, Devlin; Drammeh, Shankland, Spittal; Wilson Hibernian possible starting lineup: Smith; O'Hora, Bushiri, Iredale; C. Cadden, Triantis, Newell, N. Cadden; Campbell; Youan, Boyle Although Hearts have claimed four wins in the previous 10 derbies, only one of those victories has come in the previous 12 months. Another Edinburgh derby stalemate is anticipated on Thursday, with both sides finding the back of the net at Tynecastle Park. Regional restrictions may apply.) Ticket Cost: $73.91 The Warriors will be playing the full four quarters on Monday, but they're expected to have things wrapped up well before that. They will challenge the Brooklyn Nets at 10:00 p.m. ET at Chase Center. The Warriors will be looking to keep their five-game home win streak alive. The Warriors are headed into this one after the oddsmakers set last week's over/under low at 229.5, but even that wound up being too high. They fell 104-94 to the Spurs on Saturday. Golden State was up 77-60 in the third but couldn't hold on to the lead. Even though they lost, the Warriors were working as a unit and finished the game with 29 assists (they're ranked second in assists per game overall). That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now racked up at least 27 assists in eight consecutive contests. Meanwhile, the Nets must've known the odds they were up against on Sunday, but they decided it wasn't going to be the story of the game. They secured a 108-103 W over the Kings. The Nets can attribute much of their success to Cameron Thomas, who scored 34 points along with six assists. Thomas had some trouble finding his footing against the 76ers on Friday, so this was a step in the right direction. Golden State's defeat dropped their record down to 12-4. As for Brooklyn, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 7-10. Monday's matchup is shaping up to be a scrappy game: The Warriors have crashing the boards this season, having averaged 49.2 rebounds per game (they're ranked second in rebounds per game overall). It's a different story for the Nets, though, as they've been averaging only 38.4. Given the Warriors' sizable advantage in that area, the Nets will need to find a way to close that gap. The Warriors beat the Nets 109-98 in their previous matchup back in February. Do the Warriors have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Nets turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough. Golden State is a big 12.5-point favorite against Brooklyn, according to the latest NBA odds . The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 12.5-point spread, and stayed right there. The over/under is 224.5 points.
