The primary focus will be on sustainable development and economic competitiveness, in line with the country’s national priorities and the Qatar National Vision 2030. Login or signup to continue reading While exit polls on Sunday put Social Democrat Ciolacu, 56, comfortably ahead on 25 per cent, the identity of his opponent in the second-round runoff was uncertain. Centre-right candidate Elena Lasconi, 52, was on 18 per cent in exit polls, followed closely by two hard-right candidates, Calin Georgescu, 62, and George Simion, 38, on 16 per cent and 15 per cent respectively. Exit poll data does not capture the preferences of hundreds of thousands of Romanians who live and vote abroad. Simion, who opposes military aid to Ukraine, is particularly popular with diaspora voters. Romania's president has a semi-executive role that gives him or her control over defence spending - likely to be a difficult issue as Bucharest comes under pressure to uphold NATO spending goals during Donald Trump's second term as US president while trying to reduce a heavy fiscal deficit. Lasconi told supporters after exit polls were released that she was optimistic about making the runoff on December 8. "But as you can see, the results are very tight, let us wait until tomorrow's results to rejoice." Campaigning focused largely on the soaring cost of living, with Romania having the EU's biggest share of people at risk of poverty. Lasconi, a former journalist, joined the Save Romania Union (USR) in 2018 and became party head this year. She believes in raising defence spending and helping Ukraine, and surveys suggest she would beat Ciolacu in a runoff. But if Simion or Georgescu comes second, analysts say Lasconi is likely to urge her supporters to vote for Ciolacu to prevent a hard-right victory. Georgescu has made pro-Russian and anti-NATO comments. Australian Associated Press DAILY Today's top stories curated by our news team. Also includes evening update. CARACAS (AP) — Six Venezuelan government opponents who have sheltered for months at the decried Sunday that local police and intelligence agents were stationed outside of it for hours. The move prompted the U.S. government to call it a serious violation of international law and Argentina’s Foreign Ministry to describe it as an act of harassment. Most of the opponents belong to the Vente Venezuela party led by . It denounced what it called “a new siege by hooded officials” that began Saturday night and extended into Sunday. The incident occurred hours after Machado called for a massive mobilization on Dec. 1, prompting Venezuela’s minister of the interior to accuse the political leader of being part of a new conspiracy attempt against the government of President Nicolás Maduro. Vente Venezuela said in a statement that the diplomatic headquarters remains without electricity and is surrounded by “regime vehicles” that are preventing traffic from circulating in the area. It said communication signals also were scrambled. Argentina’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement late Saturday that the deployment of armed troops and the closing of streets in the vicinity “constitute a disturbance of security.”. It also called on the international community to condemn the incident, which the U.S. did. On Sunday, the U.S. Embassy in Venezuela posted on X that the U.S. “strongly condemns the acts of harassment against asylum seekers.” “The deployment of armed forces and blockades seriously violate international law,” it said. “We demand that the Venezuelan regime respect its international obligations, cease these intimidating actions and guarantee safe passage for asylum seekers.” Diplomatic relations between the two countries have been broken since 2019. The opposition members entered the embassy in March after the Venezuelan Attorney General’s Office issued arrest warrants and accused them of promoting alleged acts of violence to destabilize the government. In August, Argentina’s request to guard its embassy after the Venezuelan government ordered the expulsion of Argentine diplomatic personnel following statements by its president, Javier Milei, that he would not recognize “another fraud” in Venezuela after the y. A month later, Venezuela revoked Brazil’s authorization to guard the embassy, alleging it had evidence of the use of the facilities “for the planning of terrorist activities and assassination attempts.” Brazil and Argentina have rejected those accusations. Kuwait Times inspires future journalists during school visitHome | ANC North West brushes off suggestions structures are dysfunctional The ANC in the North West says the party is functioning well despite many branches in the province not being in good standing. 60% of ANC branches in the North West are not in good standing. The terms of office of many Branch Executive Committees (BEC) have expired. The SABC has reliably learnt that in Bojanala, the party’s biggest region in the province, with a total of 153 branches, fewer than ten branches are in good standing. Interim structures are currently leading many branches. PEC member and Spokesperson Tumelo Maruping says plans were made to ensure functionality. “The guidelines that we have issued as the ANC Provincial Executive Committee was that branches that have lapsed since the last national conference must turn the BEC (Branch Executive Committees) into the BTT (Branch Task Team). Where the BEC does not exist, we then instructed them to establish a task team which will lead to a BBMG. The BBMG is where the BEC gets to nominate a BEC,” he says. Meanwhile, political analyst Thabang Motswaledi says the situation is worrying. “It clearly shows you about the kind of leadership that is in the party. The ANC still struggles to find resonance among the people. The (North West) is still one of the provinces that is still the stronghold of the African National Congress. So, therefore, this tells a story, to say the ANC needs to actually look in the mirror and at self,” says Motswaledi.
