BEAVER CREEK, Colo. (AP) — As the situation stands, snowboarder/ski racer Ester Ledecka has two Olympic races on the same day in 2026, at nearly the same time and in Italian mountain towns hours apart. The Czech Republic standout simply can’t make both starting gates. So she may have a big decision to make on Feb. 8, 2026 — race in the women's downhill at the Milan-Cortina Games or go for a three-peat in snowboarding’s parallel giant slalom. Unless, of course, her lobbying efforts pay off. Ledecka said she's going through her country's Olympic committee to reach out and see if one of the events can be switched. The Winter Games schedule was just recently released. “It’s like someone has broken your dream,” the 29-year-old Ledecka said after a training run in Beaver Creek as she prepares for a World Cup downhill and super-G this weekend. “So please change it. Please, please, please. It’s my biggest dream to do both. I can create a great show for people.” Ledecka is the rare athlete to do both winter sports at such a gold medal-winning level. Nearly seven years ago, Ledecka was a surprise winner in the super-G at the Pyeongchang Games — from bib No. 26, no less. A week later, she captured gold in the parallel GS (PGS). At the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, she defended her PGS crown along with finishing fifth in the super-G, 27th in the downhill and fourth in the Alpine combined. To amend an Olympic schedule would not be unprecedented. Before the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, the International Olympic Committee and the governing body for track and field accommodated a request from Allyson Felix to go for a 200-400 double. She earned a silver in the 400. In 1996, the schedule was shifted so American sprinter Michael Johnson could run in the 200 and 400 at the Atlanta Games. He won gold in both. “I would appreciate it,” said Ledecka, who started skiing at 2 years old and snowboarding three years later. “They’re fighting (for it) right now.” The current schedule has snowboarding parallel giant slalom holding a qualifying round from 9 a.m. to 11 on Feb. 8 in Livigno, Italy. The final is set for 1 p.m. Meanwhile, the women's downhill is set to take place in Cortina at 11:30 a.m. It's about a 4-hour drive between the two events. For now, she's leaning toward snowboarding. Only because a few days later she could ski race in a super-G. “I was quite sad about that fact,” Ledecka said of the conflict between events. "We'll see. It’s still quite far away.” Ledecka has 88 World Cup starts in skiing, with 10 podium finishes and four wins. She has 63 World Cup starts in snowboarding, featuring 39 podium finishes and 25 wins. “I don’t know how she does it,” said American ski racer Jacqueline Wiles, who dabbled in snowboarding as a kid. “It’s absolutely insane.” Ledecka enjoys both sports for different reasons. In skiing, it's for the speed. For snowboarding, it's the execution of a turn. It's not always easy splitting her time between the two sports, fitting in training around events. She won a PGS race on Nov. 30 in China before arriving in Beaver Creek. After this, it's off to St. Moritz, Switzerland, for more ski racing. She's currently traveling with eight snowboards and 20 pairs of skis. “You cannot believe how stacked the ski room is right now,” Ledecka cracked. “I really admire my tech guy and how he's handling it all. I’m very happy to have my team help me do this, my dream, of going from the snowboard World Cup to the ski World Cup. I'm having a lot of fun.” Notes: Lara Gut-Behrami of Switzerland had the fastest time in the second training run Thursday. Italians racers Sofia Goggia and Federica Brignone were both within a second. ... Lindsey Vonn is not expected to forerun before the third and final training session Friday. The 40-year-old Vonn still plans on testing out the course before this weekend's races on the Birds of Prey course. ___ AP skiing: https://apnews.com/hub/alpine-skiing Pat Graham, The Associated PressTarke added seven rebounds for the Tigers (4-2). Tomiwa Sulaiman scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Christian May scored nine. The Bears (3-5) were led in scoring by Wynston Tabbs with 19 points. Kameron Hobbs had 13 points and Ahmarie Simpkins finished with nine points, three steals and two blocks. Towson went into halftime leading Morgan State 35-26. Tarke scored 14 points in the half. Towson used a 7-0 run in the second half to build an 11-point lead at 58-47 with 5:51 left in the half before finishing off the win. TORONTO (AP) — Canada’s most populous province may bar American-made alcohol in addition to restricting electricity exports to Michigan, New York and Minnesota if U.S. President-elect Donald Trump imposes sweeping tariffs on all Canadian products, a senior official said Thursday. The official in Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s government said that it’s contemplating restricting Ontario’s liquor control board from buying American-made alcohol. Ontario is also considering restricting exports of critical minerals required for electric vehicle batteries and preventing U.S.-based companies from the government’s procurement process, the official said on condition on anonymity because the functionary wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about the potential measures. Ford confirmed on Wednesday evening that Ontario is contemplating restricting electricity exports to Michigan, New York State and Minnesota. He reiterated that on Thursday and said it would make electricity unaffordable for Americans. “It’s a last resort,” Ford said. “I don’t think President-elect Trump wants that to happen. We’re sending a message to the U.S. If you come and attack Ontario, you attack livelihoods of people in Ontario and Canadians, we are going to use every tool in our tool box to defend Ontarians and Canadians. Let’s hope it never comes to that.” Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tax on all products entering the United States from Canada and Mexico unless they stem the flow of migrants and drugs. Ontario powered 1.5 million homes in the U.S. in 2023 and is a major exporter of electricity to Michigan, Minnesota and New York. “That’s OK if he that does that. That’s fine,” Trump told CNBC when asked about Ford’s remarks on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. “The United States is subsidizing Canada and we shouldn’t have to do that,” Trump said. “And we have a great relationship. I have so many friends in Canada, but we shouldn’t have to subsidize a country. We’re subsidizing more than a $100 billion a year. We shouldn’t have to be doing that.” The CNBC reporter said off camera that Trump told him that they hope they can work something out with Canada. The premier of the oil rich Canadian province of Alberta ruled out cutting off oil exports. “Under no circumstances will Alberta agree to cut off oil and gas exports,” Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said. “Instead, we’re taking a diplomatic approach and we’re meeting with our allies in the U.S. We’re making the case for Alberta oil and gas to be part of the solution to energy affordability and energy security.” Canada supplies more oil to the U.S. than any other country. About 60% of U.S. crude oil imports are from Canada, and 85% of U.S. electricity imports as well. Canada also has 34 critical minerals and metals the Pentagon is eager for. Nearly 3.6 billion Canadian dollars ($2.7 billion) worth of goods and services cross the border each day. Canada is the top export destination for 36 U.S. states. Canada has promised more border security spending to address Trump’s border concerns. Ford said that will include more border and police officers, as well as drones and sniffer dogs. Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who along with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently had dinner with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, his private club in Florida, said they plan to share details of those border plans with the incoming Trump administration in the coming days. Alberta’s government is creating a new sheriff patrol unit to shore up security at the border. It will be supported by about 50 sheriffs, 10 cold weather surveillance drones and four drug detection dogs. Alberta Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis said a two-kilometer (1.2-mile) deep zone along the border with Montana will be deemed critical infrastructure, so sheriffs can arrest without a warrant anyone found attempting to cross illegally or trafficking illegal drugs or weapons. At the Mar-a-Lago dinner, Kristen Hillman, Canada’s ambassador to the U.S., said that Washington’s trade deficit with Canada was also raised. Hillman said the U.S. had a $75 billion trade deficit with Canada last year but noted a third of what Canada sells into the U.S. is energy exports and prices have been high. Trudeau said this week that U.S.-imposed tariffs would be “absolutely devastating” for the Canadian economy, but it would also mean real hardship for Americans. Canada imposed duties in 2018 against the U.S. in a tit-for-tat response to new taxes on Canadian steel and aluminum. Canadian officials have said that it’s unfair to lump Canada in with Mexico. LeBlanc said that illegal migration from Canada to the U.S. is only 0.6% of the total, and fentanyl from Canada is 0.2% of the total of U.S. seizures. Quebec Premier Françoise Legault said that Trump told him in Paris last week that he doesn’t want to see anymore illegal immigration coming from Canada. Quebec is a major supplier of electricity to the U.S. Legault noted Trudeau’s plan to strengthen border security. “I prefer that than starting a war and stopping sending energy to the United States,” Legault said. Newfoundland Premier Andrew Furey said he had a call with New England governors this week and said there is a significant degree of concern on both sides of the border. “We hope it is just bluster,” Furey said. “We are preparing as if it is not. There will be no winner in a trade war.” Advertisement AdvertisementMilan coach Fonseca slams referee after defeat by Atalanta

The National Economic Council, on Thursday, urged state governments to key into the programmes of the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit to address food insecurity. NEC also approved the winding down of the ad-hoc committee on flood, erosion, drought, and desertification, chaired by the governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, transferring its duties to a task force on flood, erosion, drought and mitigation agencies. The council took the decision at its 147th meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja. In a presentation to the council, the Technical Assistant to the President on Agriculture (Office of the Vice President), Marion Moon and the coordinator of the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit highlighted the strategy proposed by the unit to collaborate with sub-nationals in addressing food insecurity and unlocking Nigeria’s agricultural potentials across the country. Moon said the PFSCU priorities, especially in agri-business, will enhance delivery mechanisms and expedite action in attaining targets enshrined in the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the various aspirations of the respective state governments. In its resolution, NEC commended the presentation by the unit’s coordinator and urged state governments to key into the initiative. The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, who briefed State House correspondents after the meeting, said Moon was asked to present a summary of its key achievements at the next council meeting in January 2025. Edun explained, “There was a resolution whereby the Council noted the presentation and the prayers and requested that the unit prepare a summary of its key achievements to present to the next council meeting. “The issue of food security is a worldwide phenomenon. Food insecurity affects, to one extent, over 30 per cent of the world. “The major micro reforms that Mr President has implemented have successfully stabilised important parts of the economy and changed the whole economic incentive framework from rent-seeking to one of now looking to produce in agriculture to manufacture for exports.” Meanwhile, Ododo who is the chairman of the NEC Ad-hoc Committee updated the council on the committee’s activities, noting that the implementation of some of its recommendations, especially the provision of financial support to states and disbursement of funds to line ministries and agencies of government to address flood and related disasters across the country. Ododo prayed that the council approve the winding down of the committee’s activities and the transfer of its duties to the Taskforce on Flood, Erosion, Drought and Desertification. Related News NEC approves RMAFC’s new funding plan, legislative amendments NEC to review state police reports today Nigeria's food security top priority, says minister The council noted the prayers of the committee, commended the chairman and members for discharging their tasks dutifully and approved its recommendations for the disbursement of the balance of funds approved for MDAs for flood mitigation and related activities. Council members were also briefed on the World Bank collaboration on Human Capital Opportunity for Prosperity and Equality, known as the HOPE Project. The World Bank team told attendees that the HOPE-SOP provides an opportunity to boost human capital by tackling both upstream and downstream challenges. The Secretary of NEC, Vitalis Obi, told journalists that the presentation focused on addressing governance and service delivery constraints in basic education and primary health care, among others. The expected outcomes include an enhanced allocation, utilisation and transparency of federal and state funds at facility levels for health and basic education; improved focus on foundational service constraints at facilities (ANC-4, DPT3, mCPR, use of technology); improved foundational literacy & numeracy through structured pedagogy programs to reduce learning poverty (currently at 80; increased access to basic education and primary healthcare services at facility level through community-based management approaches, among others. Having approved the HOPE-GOV and HOPE-PHC in September 2024, the World Bank says it will grant the green light to HOPE-EDU in March 2025 An expression of Interest letter is a pre-requisite for program participation, as a few states have submitted theirs. Also, interested states are to submit their EOIs to the Finance Ministry with copies to sectoral Ministries and the World Bank. Obi said the Council noted the importance of the presentation on human capital development, noting that the programmes under the HOPE initiative are result-driven and would benefit all sub-nationals given the quantum of the challenges across the country. Speaking earlier, the Vice President, Kashim Shettima noted that the programme is a golden opportunity for states to reposition healthcare delivery and the education sector in the various domains and urged all state governments to key in and nominate focal persons to assist in driving the programmes in their areas. Shettima also described the World Bank’s HOPE Project as a significant opportunity for Nigeria. “This initiative promises to strengthen our basic education and primary healthcare systems, ensuring that we expand our human capital indices in ways that create lasting impacts. “Through targeted strategies, we can address long-standing inequalities and position our workforce to compete in a rapidly evolving global economy,” he noted.
