Indeed, she believes that Scotland have game changing talent at their disposal. Getting those players into the game and in a position to influence it will at the forefront of Martinez Losa's mind this weekend. Certainly, though, there is no question that it will need to be a vastly improved performance from what was on offer in Leith with Finland easily the more menacing of the two teams. “We do have special players who can turn up for us,” said Cumings . “We all know that we have really talented players in our squad so if that is what it comes to do and it helps us to get over the line then I think we have got it. You have to stand up and be counted.” And Cumings has also revealed that the veterans of the squad who have already experienced World Cups and European Championships are the driver for Scotland to go and do it again. Scotland have not been at a major tournament since the World Cup in France back in 2019 with Cumings determined to sample playing on the biggest stages. “I have said it before, it would mean everything,” she said. “We all want to play for Scotland at a major tournament. It is all of our dreams. There are girls who have done it before. “I would love to achieve that. You sit at home and you watch the games on TV and it hurts to not be there. “The girls have been speaking about how amazing the feeling was when they qualified for the World Cup and just saying, ‘imagine that feeling.’ They have said that it has been the best moment of their careers. I would love to experience that euphoria and that joy of making it.” And the goalkeeper, whose day job is with Rosengard in Sweden, believes that while there will be moments when Scotland will have to struggle in Helsinki, that they have the required mentality to prevail. “You always have to suffer in football,” she said. “It is never just great, great, great in football. It is not a linear experience. There are ups and downs and that is what makes the ups so amazing. “We all still believe that it is in our hands. I fully believe that this is a squad who are capable of going and taking us to Switzerland this summer. “There was a bit of tension within the game on Friday night but I think that is to be expected when you know what is at stake. But the squad as a whole is fairly relaxed. “We all believe in one another and we know that if we keep our focus and play the way that we know we can, then it is entirely possible for us to qualify. It will take a huge effort but we are most definitely capable of getting there.” There was a reprieve of sorts for Martinez Losa’s side yesterday as they were given the afternoon off to spend with families ahead of tomorrow’s flight to Helsinki. So having a day with them was good but we always say that when you have a day off in the midst of a camp like this, that in some ways it feels like you are skipping school. Gaetz, who resigned from the US House of Representatives last week, was recently the subject of an Ethics Committee probe into allegations he had sex with an underage 17-year-old girl. He has denied wrongdoing. The Republican released a statement on X on Thursday saying he believed his nomination was becoming a “distraction” to the new Trump administration. “While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition,” he wrote. “There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I'll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump's DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1. I remain fully committed to see that Donald J. Trump is the most successful President in history. “I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I'm certain he will Save America.” Gaetz’s nomination was an early test of Trump's power over Congress, where his Republican Party will hold majorities in both chambers next year. Gaetz was disliked by many fellow Republicans for having orchestrated the ouster last year of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, throwing the House into chaos for weeks. Republicans in the Senate had bristled at the idea of being asked to vote on Gaetz without seeing the findings of the House Ethics Committee's investigation into the allegations of sexual misconduct. Gaetz earned a reputation as a firebrand and loyal Trump ally during his time in the House and his nomination was viewed as an indication Trump would follow through on his vows to use the Justice Department to exact retribution against his foes. "He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect," Trump wrote on Truth Social. Since Trump's pick, a handful of Republican senators had either directly questioned the pick or said they would want to see the findings of the ethics report on Gaetz, raising questions of whether he could win sufficient votes for confirmation in a chamber where Republicans are expected to hold a 53-47 majority. "There was perhaps some information out there that the president was not aware of when he made the original recommendation," said Republican Senator Mike Rounds. He described Gaetz's withdrawal as the Senate fulfilling its duty to advise presidents on nominations. First Quarter of Fiscal 2025 Continuing Operations Highlights * ** Organic sales represent net sales excluding the impact of foreign exchange rates, acquisitions, and divestitures. A reconciliation of organic sales to comparable net sales is presented in the tables accompanying this release. MILWAUKEE, Dec. 18, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Enerpac Tool Group Corp. (NYSE: EPAC) (the "Company” or "Enerpac”) today announced results for its fiscal first quarter ended November 30, 2024. "We entered fiscal 2025 mindful of a sluggish industrial macro environment,” said Paul Sternlieb, Enerpac Tool Group's President & CEO. "Nonetheless, we believe Enerpac can continue to outperform the market given our global brand leadership, targeted growth strategy, customer-driven innovation, and continuous improvement process to enhance operational efficiency and productivity.” "First quarter fiscal 2025 was essentially in line with our expectations, reflecting our ability to operate in a soft market, while lapping strong growth in the first quarter of fiscal 2024,” said Darren Kozik, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Consolidated net sales for the first quarter of fiscal 2025 were $145.2 million compared to $142.0 million in the prior-year period, an increase of 2.3%. Organic sales, excluding the acquisition of DTA and the impact of foreign currency, decreased 0.8% year-over-year. Service organic revenue growth of 5.6% was offset by a 2.7% decline in product sales. Net sales for Industrial Tools & Services (IT&S) increased 2.3%, driven by the increase in service revenue and the acquisition of DTA. The organic sales decline of 1.0% for IT&S was partially offset by a year-over-year improvement at Cortland Biomedical, which comprises the Other operating segment. Gross profit margin declined 90 basis points year-over-year to 51.4% due to lower sales in the Americas, a higher percentage of service revenue, and a return to normalized margins at Cortland. Selling, general and administrative expenses (SG&A) of $42.3 million were $2.3 million lower year-over-year. SG&A was 29.1% of sales, down from 31.4% in the year-ago period. Adjusted SG&A expenses, excluding one-time costs associated with the acquisition of DTA, were $42.2 million as compared to $41.1 million in fiscal 2024. The prior-year period adjusted SG&A excluded ASCEND and restructuring charges. As a percentage of sales, adjusted SG&A held flat at 29.0%. Operating profit increased 9% year-over-year to $31.1 million, with an operating profit margin of 21.4%, up from 20.2% in the first quarter of fiscal 2024. Adjusted operating profit decreased 3.6% to $31.3 million, with an adjusted operating margin of 21.5%, down from 22.8% in the year-ago period. First quarter fiscal 2025 net income and diluted EPS were $21.7 million and $0.40 respectively, compared to $18.3 million and $0.33, respectively, in the year-ago period. First quarter adjusted EBITDA was $34.3 million compared to $34.9 million in the year-ago period. Adjusted EBITDA margin declined 100 basis points year-over-year to 23.6% driven by lower gross margins coupled with the inclusion of DTA. Net cash provided by operating activities was $8.6 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2025 as compared to a use of $6.7 million in the prior-year period. Cash flow from operations was higher than the prior year, the benefit of higher net earnings, lower annual incentive compensation payments made in the first quarter compared to the prior year, and the absence of payments related to discontinued operations. IT&S Results Comparisons First quarter fiscal 2025 net sales for IT&S were $140.1 million, an increase of 2.3% year-over-year with organic sales down 1.0%. The decline in organic sales was driven by a 3.0% decrease in product sales, partially offset by a 5.6% increase in service revenue. The segment's operating profit margin increased approximately 110 basis points to 27.1% as the prior-year period included ASCEND and restructuring costs. Adjusted operating profit margin declined 90 basis points to 27.2%, driven by sales mix and the inclusion of DTA's results. DTA Acquisition On September 4, Enerpac completed the acquisition of DTA, a producer of automated on-site horizontal movement products, to complement its Heavy Lifting Technology product portfolio. "With the integration well underway, we are capitalizing on the opportunity to leverage Enerpac's global sales network and expand DTA's sales outside of Europe,” added Sternlieb. Cash decreased from the end of fiscal 2024 primarily due to the acquisition of DTA in the first quarter of fiscal 2025. Outlook "With the first quarter results roughly as anticipated, we are maintaining our full-year fiscal 2025 guidance, including total revenue and adjusted EBITDA growth of 5% at the midpoint of our guidance,” concluded Sternlieb. The Company is projecting a net sales range of $610 million to $625 million in fiscal 2025. JACKPOT — Jackpot Combined School officials announced the school has received two grants totaling $61,565 from the state of Nevada Office of Science, Innovation and Technology. The school, which received a Developing STEM School rating earlier this year from the Governor’s Office of Science and Technology, was awarded the grants to raise the its rating, according to an announcement on Wednesday. The rating can be raised to an Established or Model STEM School by integrating STEM into lessons, the school culture and the community. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. “This funding allows us to create unique opportunities for our students to learn STEM concepts through hands-on, real-world applications,” Principal Stormi McCarthy said. Jackpot Combined School staff celebrate their designation as a Developing STEM school during a ceremony in March. The first grant, a $25,000 award, will fund the Skill Struck STEM learning platform and teacher professional development, according to an announcement from the Elko County School District. The learning platform includes the launch of a student-run school store in which students will manufacture and sell products, gaining practical experiences in entrepreneurship and financial literacy, the district said. The second grant of $36,565 will support the Jackpot Community Greenhouse Project, which aims to build a commercial-grade greenhouse and provide related materials and professional development. The greenhouse will serve as a year-round outdoor classroom where students will cultivate plants, conduct research and collaborate with local industry partners, the district said. Students will gain skills in landscape design, plant science and problem-solving while addressing real-world challenges. Both initiatives align with the school’s strategic goals of improving STEM education, fostering community partnerships and preparing students for careers, according to the district. The Philippines surged 31 places in the 2024 United Nations (UN) e-Participation Index (EPI), rising to 49th from 80th in 2022 amid enhanced digital governance. The EPI evaluates how governments leverage digital tools to empower citizens, promote transparency, and encourage active participation in governance. The Philippines’ progress in the EPI is also mirrored in the 2024 UN E-Government Development Index (EGDI), where the country rose to 73rd place from 89th in 2022, advancing 16 spots. Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Ivan John Uy described the milestone over the weekend as a testament to the government’s efforts to enhance digital transformation. "This milestone underscores our dedication to making government services more accessible, transparent, and participatory for every Filipino," Uy said. The DICT credited the improvement to the eGov Super App, its flagship platform integrating national and local government services. The app offers various services, including business registration, tourism information, job creation tools, travel declarations, and e-commerce features. According to DICT Undersecretary David Almirol, the eGov Super App aggregates existing systems using Single Sign-On and API integration, allowing seamless access to government services while maintaining compatibility with current agency systems. He said the DICT is also working with the Departments of Foreign Affairs and Tourism and the Bureau of Immigration to incorporate the Philippine eVisa Portal into the app, simplifying the visa application process for tourists and supporting the country’s tourism sector. The eGov Super App is an online one-stop shop and also facilitates local government services, such as applying for permits, certifications, and clearances. Partnerships with agencies like the Department of Health, Department of Labor and Employment, Philippine Health Insurance Corp., and Professional Regulation Commission have expanded their offerings to include resume-building tools for job seekers, eKonsulta for health benefits, and a unified travel declaration system for travelers. Almirol said the DICT is planning further collaborations with other agencies to integrate new features like citizen reporting modules, a job matching system, artificial intelligence bots, and tools to empower start-ups. To date, the DICT has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with over 50 government agencies to advance the Philippines’ digital governance and global standing.

(AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau returned home Saturday after his meeting with Donald Trump without assurances the president-elect will back away from threatened tariffs on all products from the major American trading partner. Trump called the talks “productive” but signaled no retreat from a pledge that Canada says unfairly lumps it in with Mexico over the flow of drugs and migrants into the United States. After the leaders’ hastily arranged dinner Friday night at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, Trudeau spoke of “an excellent conversation” but offered no details. Trump said in a Truth Social post later Saturday that they discussed “many important topics that will require both Countries to work together to address.” For issues in need of such cooperation, Trump cited fentanyl and the “Drug Crisis that has decimated so many lives as a result of Illegal Immigration," fair trade deals "that do not jeopardize American Workers” and the U.S. trade deficit with its ally to the north. Trump asserted that the prime minister had made “a commitment to work with us to end this terrible devastation” of American families from fentanyl from China reaching the United States through its neighbors. The U.S., he said, “will no longer sit idly by as our Citizens become victims to the scourge of this Drug Epidemic.” The Republican president-elect has threatened to impose a 25% tax on all products entering the U.S. from Canada and Mexico as one of his first executive orders when he takes office in January. U.S. customs agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border last fiscal year, compared with 21,100 pounds at the Mexican border. On immigration, the U.S. Border Patrol made 56,530 arrests at the Mexican border in October alone and 23,721 arrests at the Canadian border between October 2023 and September 2024 — and Canadian officials say they are ready to make new investments in border security. Trudeau called Trump after the Republican's social media posts about the tariffs last Monday and they agreed to meet, according to a official familiar with the matter who was not authorized to publicly discuss detail of the private talks. The official said other countries are calling Canadian officials to hear how about how the meeting was arranged and to ask for advice. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, after speaking with Trump on the telephone, said Thursday she was confident a tariff war with Washington would be averted. At the dinner that was said to last three hours, Trump said he and Trudeau also discussed energy, trade and the Arctic. A second official cited defense, Ukraine, NATO, China, the Mideast, pipelines and the Group of Seven meeting in Canada next year as other issues that arose. Trump, during his first term as president, once called Trudeau “weak” and “dishonest,” but it was the prime minister who was the first G7 leader to visit Trump since the Nov. 5 election. "Tariffs are a crucial issue for Canada and a bold move was in order. Perhaps it was a risk, but a risk worth taking,” Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University in Montreal. Trudeau had said before leaving from Friday that Trump was elected because he promised to bring down the cost of groceries but now was talking about adding 25% to the cost of all kinds of products, including potatoes from Prince Edward Island in Atlantic Canada. “It is important to understand that Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he plans on carrying them out. There’s no question about it,” Trudeau said. “Our responsibility is to point out that he would not just be harming Canadians, who work so well with the United States, but he would actually be raising prices for Americans citizens as well and hurting American industry and business,” he added. The threatened tariffs could essentially blow up the North American trade pact that Trump’s team negotiated during his first term. Trudeau noted they were able to successfully renegotiate the deal, which he calls a “win win” for both countries. When Trump imposed higher tariffs as president, other countries responded with retaliatory tariffs of their own. Canada, for instance, announced billions of new duties in 2018 against the U.S. in a response to new taxes on Canadian steel and aluminum. Canada is the top export destination for 36 U.S. states. Nearly $3.6 billion Canadian (US $2.7 billion) worth of goods and services cross the border each day. About 60% of U.S. crude oil imports are from Canada, and 85% of U.S. electricity imports are from Canada. Canada is also the largest foreign supplier of steel, aluminum and uranium to the U.S. and has 34 critical minerals and metals that the Pentagon is eager for and investing in for national security. Canada is one of the most trade-dependent countries in the world, and 77% of Canada’s exports go to the U.S. ___ Gillies reported from Toronto. In conclusion, the phrase "moderately loose" encapsulates a nuanced and adaptive approach to economic policy that is set to define the outlook for the coming year. iPhone Photography: The SECRET to Perfect Exposure Every Tim

By Nate Raymond (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Democrats and Republicans clinched a late-night deal on Wednesday that clears the way for votes on a group of President Joe Biden's nominees for federal trial courts in exchange for not pushing forward with four nominees to serve on appellate courts, leaving vacancies that Republican President-elect Donald Trump can fill. The deal, described by a spokesperson for Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Thursday, was reached after Senate Republicans launched a campaign to try to stall and prevent Democrats from fulfilling their plan to confirm as many life-tenured judges as possible before Trump takes office in January. Senate Republicans had previously said they had votes to block at least two of the four appellate court nominees, including Adeel Mangi, who would have become the first Muslim federal appellate judge if confirmed to the Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The deal was sure to disappoint progressive advocates who have been pushing Democrats to fill as many judicial vacancies as possible following the Nov. 5 election, which handed the White House to Trump and control of the Senate to Republicans. "Willingly gifting Donald Trump the chance to appoint judges more committed to political agendas than the rule of law is doing a dangerous disservice to the American people," Maggie Jo Buchanan, the director of the progressive legal group Demand Justice, said in a statement. Since the election, the Senate has confirmed eight of Biden's judge picks, bringing the total number of confirmed judicial nominees to 221. The Democratic-led Senate on Thursday confirmed one more, Sharad Desai, to serve as a trial court judge in Arizona. Republicans at Trump's urging had tried to put procedural roadblocks in place to slow down the process and peel away votes in a Senate that Democrats narrowly control 51-49. But several Republican senators have missed votes to confirm judges. Under the deal, the Senate will vote on confirming seven nominees to district court judges who Schumer had already teed up when it returns from its post-Thanksgiving recess in exchange for no longer pursuing the confirmation of the four nominees to higher-level appellate courts. The Senate will also take up consideration of five other district court nominees who whose nominations were advanced on Thursday by the Senate Judiciary Committee. "The trade was four circuit nominees -- all lacking the votes to get confirmed -- for more than triple the number of additional judges moving forward," a Schumer spokesperson said in a statement. The other appellate nominees were Ryan Park, up for a seat on the Richmond, Virginia-based 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals; Julia Lipez, who was nominated to the Boston-based 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals; and Karla Campbell, who was nominated to the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. wowjili login Stormont minister Maurice Morrow told an official he would not raise the issue with the Northern Ireland Executive, despite similar measures being considered in England and Wales. A file on planning arrangements for the jubilee celebrations reveals a series of civil service correspondences on how Northern Ireland would mark the occasion. It includes a letter sent on January 11 2001 from an official in the Office of the First Minister/Deputy First Minister (OFMDFM) to the Department of Social Development, advising that a committee had been set up in London to consider a programme of celebrations. The correspondence says: “One of the issues the committee is currently considering is the possibility of deregulating liquor licensing laws during the golden jubilee celebrations on the same lines as the arrangements made for the millennium. “It is felt that the golden jubilee bank holiday on Monday 3 June 2002 is likely to be an occasion on which many public houses and similar licensed premises would wish to stay open beyond normal closing time.” The letter said a paper had been prepared on the issue of extending opening hours. It adds: “You will note that paragraph seven of the paper indicates that the devolved administrations ‘would need to consider deregulation separately within their own jurisdictions’. “I thought that you would wish to be aware that this issue is receiving active consideration for England and Wales and to consider whether anything needs to be done for Northern Ireland.” Some months later a “progress report” was sent between officials in OFMDFM, which again raised the issue of licensing laws. It says: “I spoke to Gordon Gibson, DSD, about Terry Smith’s letter of 12 January 2001 about licensing laws: the matter was put to their minister Maurice Morrow (DUP) who indicated that he would not be asking the NIE (Northern Ireland Executive) to approve any change to current licensing laws in NI to allow for either 24 hour opening (as at the millennium) nor a blanket approval for extended opening hours as is being considered in GB. “In both cases, primary legislation would be required here and would necessitate consultation and the minister has ruled out any consultation process.” The correspondence says individual licensees could still apply for an extension to opening hours on an ad hoc basis, adding “there the matter rests”. It goes on: “DSD await further pronouncements from the Home Office and Gibson and I have agreed to notify each other of any developments we become aware of and he will copy me to any (existing) relevant papers. “Ministers may well come under pressure in due course for a relaxation and/or parity with GB.” The document concludes “That’s it so far...making haste slowly?” Emails sent between officials in the department the same month said that lord lieutenants in Northern Ireland had been approached about local events to mark the jubilee. One message says: “Lord lieutenants have not shown any enthusiasm for encouraging GJ celebrations at a local level. “Lady Carswell in particular believes that it would be difficult for LLs to encourage such activities without appearing political.”

In addition to the decrease in temperatures, the cold front is also expected to bring a change in weather patterns, with some areas experiencing gusty winds, cloudy skies, and even the possibility of precipitation. This shift in weather conditions may come as a surprise to some, especially after a long and hot summer season, but it serves as a reminder that the seasons are changing, and fall is upon us.

Officials have missed several obvious facemask penalties this season, including two in a three-week span during Thursday night games. “When we see it, because I see it like yourselves and the fans, I have an opportunity to see it from a different angle and see it from a slow-mo,” NFL executive Troy Vincent said Wednesday at the league’s winter meetings. “When you think about the position of where the officials are, things are happening so fast. Sometimes the facemask can be the same color as the gloves. There’s a lot happening. Concerning? Yes, because that’s a big miss. That’s a big foul. That’s why we would like to consider putting that for the membership to consider putting that foul category that we can see, putting that (penalty flag) on the field to help. There is a frustration, and we believe that is one category we can potentially get right.” Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold was grabbed by his facemask and brought down in the end zone to end Minnesota’s comeback attempt against the Rams on Oct. 24. But there was no call. On Oct. 3, officials missed a facemask on Buccaneers running back Bucky Irving while he ran for 7 yards late in the fourth quarter. Tampa Bay instead was called for holding on the play, got forced out of field-goal range and Kirk Cousins rallied the Falcons to an overtime victory. “That is one this year, the facemask seems like it was the obvious one” Vincent said. “That keeps showing up.” Vincent also cited hits on a defenseless player, tripping, the fair catch, an illegal batted ball, an illegal double-team block, illegal formations on kickoffs and taunting as other areas that warrant consideration for replay assist. Current rules only allow replay assist to help officials pick up a flag incorrectly thrown on the field, or in assisting proper enforcement of a foul called on the field. The NFL’s Competition Committee will review potential recommendations for owners to vote on for expanding replay assist. Low blocks Vincent was emphatic about the league’s desire to eliminate low blocks that could lead to serious injuries. “The low block below the knee needs to be removed from the game,” Vincent said. “You look at high school, you look at college, too. Every block should be above the knee, but below the neck. All the work that we’ve done for the head and neck area, all the things that we’ve taken out of the game, this is the right time for us to remove the low block out of the game. Be consistent with high school. Be consistent with college. Every block should be above the knee and below the neck.” Onside kicks The league will consider changes to the onside kick after dramatically overhauling the kickoff rule on a one-year basis. “We need to look at that. That’s a dead play,” Vincent said of the onside kick’s low success rate. “That is a ceremonial play. Very low recovery rate. When we look at the kickoff and maybe where the touchback area should be during the offseason, we need to revisit the onside kick.” Options include giving the team an opportunity to run one play to gain a certain number of yards to keep possession. Commanders in RFK Stadium The Washington Commanders’ search for a new stadium site includes options in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, and work has escalated on one in particular. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and controlling owner Josh Harris met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill last week about the RFK Stadium site in Washington, which requires a bill getting through Congress to transfer the land to the District government before anything else can happen. “I think there’s a bipartisan support for this,” Goodell said, adding he’d like to see it get to a vote soon. “We hope that it will be addressed and approved so that it’s at least an alternative for the Commanders if we go forward. I grew up in Washington, and I know would be exciting for a lot of fans.” Expanding schedule The NFL continues to discuss a potential 18-game season, but would need approval from the players’ union. “We are doing analysis I would say, but we are not finalizing any plans at this point,” Goodell said. “They’ll share that analysis with the players’ union, which would need to agree to any change.” ___ AP Sports Writer Stephen Whyno contributed. ___ AP NFL:Orlando City 1, Atlanta 0The success story of these Wall Street funds has sent shockwaves through the global investment community, sparking both intrigue and admiration for their unparalleled foresight and strategic acumen. The Darnold-Jefferson connection is thriving for the surging VikingsSANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) — Two people were rescued and a third swam to safety after a California pier under construction partially collapsed and fell into the ocean Monday as the state's central coast was pounded by heavy surf from a major storm expected to bring hurricane-force winds to the seas off the Pacific Northwest, authorities said. Residents were warned to stay away from low-lying areas near the beaches around the Santa Cruz Wharf, about 70 miles (112 kilometers) south of San Francisco, as the storm rapidly gained strength. “You are risking your life, and those of the people that would need to try and save you by getting in or too close to the water,” the National Weather Service's Bay Area office said on the social platform X. Lifeguards rescued two people from the water, officials with Santa Cruz Fire Department said. No one had serious injuries, Mayor Fred Keeley said. The mayor said the section of the wharf that collapsed had been damaged over time. The structure was in the middle of a $4 million renovation following destructive storms last winter. “It’s a catastrophe for those down at the end of the wharf," said David Johnston, owner of Venture Quest Kayaking, who was allowed onto the pier to check on his business. Tony Elliot, the head of the Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation Department, estimated that about 150 feet (45 meters) of the end of the wharf fell into the water around 12:45 p.m. It was immediately evacuated and will remain closed indefinitely. Some of the wharf’s pilings are still in the ocean and remain “serious, serious hazards” to boats, the mayor said. Each piling weighs hundreds of pounds and is being pushed by powerful waves. Gov. Gavin Newsom's has been briefed and the state's Office of Emergency Services is coordinating with local officials, his office said. Forecasters warned that storm swells will continue to increase throughout the day. “We are anticipating that what is coming toward us is more serious than what was there this morning,” the mayor said. Ocean swells along California's central coast could reach 60 feet (18 meters) as the Pacific storm gains strength through Monday, the weather service said. “A rapidly developing storm will bring hurricane force winds to the areas well offshore of the Pacific Northwest tonight,” the weather service's Ocean Prediction Center said on X. The end of the pier that broke off had been shut down during renovations. The portion, which included public restrooms and the closed Dolphin restaurant, floated about half a mile (0.8 kilometers) down the coast and wedged itself at the bottom of the San Lorenzo River. Those who fell into the water were two engineers and a project manager who were inspecting the end of the wharf, officials said. No members of the public were in the area. Building inspectors were now looking at the rest of the Santa Cruz Wharf’s structural integrity. Monday's collapse came about a year after the Seacliff State Beach pier just down the coast was battered beyond repair by a heavy winter storm. Further up the West Coast, dangerous surf conditions and waves up to 30 feet (9.1 meters) were expected from the central Oregon coast up through southwestern Washington. Winds could peak near 80 mph (130 kph) and a high surf warning in effect until 10 p.m. Monday night, forecasters said. In a post on X, the National Weather Service office in Portland, Oregon, said “it will likely go down as some of the highest surf this winter.” ___ Dazio reported from Los Angeles.

Uxbridge resident Kendal Lahari beat out some highly regarded competition to win the $20,000 Mad Barn Indoor Eventing Challenge at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Lahari, 37, rode her horse, Audacious, to a clear round to defeat four-time American eventing Olympian Boyd Martin and Canadian Olympian Jessica Phoenix, another Uxbridge native. Only four of the 10 riders in the event cleared the course with no faults and Lahari posted the fastest time. There also was celebrity in the course itself: it was designed by Capt. Mark Phillips, Princess Anne’s first husband. Eventing is a combination of dressage, show jumping and cross-country, but since the Royal competition was held indoors, the course was a combination of show jumping and cross-country obstacles. Although the event was called a $20,000 challenge, Lahari said her winner’s slice of the prize money only amounted to $6,000. Over a cup of coffee in a viewing room overlooking the indoor ring at their farm, Lahari was full of praise for Audacious, an 11-year-old male standing 16 hands three inches tall. She has been riding him and training him for eight years and says he loves to perform in front of crowds. Despite the fact that it was her first-ever title in the Mad Barn event, Lahari has an impressive resumé. To start with, all the riders in the Mad Barn event were there by invitation, based on their past records. Lahari has been riding competitively since she was 11 years old and has represented Canada at various equestrian meets. She was a member of the Canadian team at the Nations Cup last year. She said she has been invited to the event for 12 years, adding that only high performance riders get invited. Currently, she is working to make the Canadian team for the World Equestrian Games in 2026. “You have to meet the qualifications, but also show consistency in results,” she said. The event at the Royal was her last competition of the year. She starts up again in January, with competitions on most weekends through to October. She spends the first four months of the year riding the circuit in Florida. When she is not riding competitively, Lahari trains both horses and young riders. She is well suited for the role, having started riding when she was just five years old. For Lahari, eventing was almost a foregone conclusion: her mother, Gwen, represented Canada in eventing years ago and has been her coach.Luke Williams feels Swansea ‘lost grip’ on game despite sealing victory at Derby

World Cup selection drives US sevens star Maher's move to Bristol

Idaho State men's head basketball coach Ryan Looney said before this season began, his goal for the Bengals’ “money games” against Power Conference schools is to come back a better team. If the second half of Wednesday night’s game against the Big Ten’s UCLA is any indication, it was mission accomplished. No, the Bengals didn’t win, nor did it ever really feel like they were going to contend for that matter. But they put together probably their best offensive half of the season, considering the opposition, while losing 84-70. It was the most points UCLA has given up at home this year by a wide margin – the previous high was 50 to Rider. And the Bengals, who had been in an early-season shooting slump, rose up to shoot 55% from the field in the second half, after hitting just 32% and trailing 41-27 at halftime. Unfortunately for ISU, the Bruins, now 4-1, were pretty hot from the field themselves. They shot 57% for the game, including a red hot 64% from 3-point range (9-of-14). Tyler Bilodeau, a 6-foot-9-inch transfer forward who scored only three points for Oregon State against the Bengals last season, lit it up from outside Wednesday. He was 4-for-4 from distance, and wound up with 20 points. Meanwhile, Sebastian Mack, a powerful 6-3 guard, made a living at the free throw line for the Bruins, hitting 15-of-16 foul shots on his way to 21 points. His backcourt mate, Eric Dailey, Jr., added 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting. So UCLA had plenty of firepower to put the game away. What was encouraging for the Bengals, however, is how well they performed offensively against a team that was holding opponents to 51.8 points a game, and forcing 19 turnovers a contest. ISU forward Isaiah Griffin was the Bengal offense in the first half, scoring the team’s first 12 points. He wound up with 16 total on 5-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Then in the second half, guard Dylan Darling, struggling from beyond-the-arc, starting take the ball inside and wound up with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Guard AJ Burgin came off the bench to hit three 3s on the way to 11 points, and redshirt freshman Jaedyn Brown had his best game as a Bengal, hitting a pair of treys and finishing with 10 points. As a team, the Bengals only turned the ball over 12 times versus the Bruins’ full-court, man-to-man pressure. ISU was outrebounded for the first time this season, 25-23. But it still had more offensive rebounds, 10-8, than UCLA, which was playing before a sparse crowd of 4,029 fans in historic Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins, who used to be the “gold standard” in college basketball decades ago, haven’t played before a home crowed larger than 5,108 fans so far in their four home games this season. The Denver Broncos had a bit of drama going on this offseason between them and their best offensive player, Courtland Sutton. If you remember correctly, Sutton wanted a new deal with a bit more money, and in a way, he got that. He wanted more guaranteed money, and they gave him that, along with some incentives. In other words, the Broncos set out some target goals of stats that, if he reached them, would grant him more money. Well, after a great start to the season for Sutton, who is looking elite in 2024, it's safe to say he will need the help of his rookie quarterback Bo Nix even more. He's just six yards from securing an additional $250 thousand and 321 yards from claiming the entire $1.5 million bonus that he initially signed on for with the extension the Denver Broncos gave him. Sutton already unlocked $500 thousand by eclipsing 500 receiving yards. The Broncos have a tough schedule coming up against some decent pass defenses. But, it seems like they are going to be very capable of getting the passing game going, especially when it comes to getting Sutton the ball. The Broncos are one of the hottest teams on offense the last few weeks. They dominated the Atlanta Falcons and really were in control the whole time against the Las Vegas Raiders. With a game against the Cleveland Browns next, the Broncos should be in good shape. Jake Paul could reportedly get his wish and face Conor McGregor in a blockbuster boxing bout in 2025. The Problem Child has long campaigned for a fight with the UFC legend since entering the paid ranks in 2020. Earlier this year, the ex-Disney actor accused McGregor of being 'scared' to face him inside the squared circle. His X-rated rant towards the Notorious came as a result of a war of words between the two men after McGregor labelled the American as a 'little dweeb' . But now the pair could settle their differences in the ring - which could take place in either July, August or September next year. That's according to ESPN reporter Salvador Rodriguez, who has stated that an offer is 'on the table'. He also declared that the dust-up could be held in India. McGregor hasn't fought since 2021 after breaking his leg in his defeat to Dustin Poirier in their trilogy bout. Meanwhile Paul has been heavily active in recent years - competing nine times in the time McGregor has been absent. His record stands at 11-1, with his most recent fight coming against boxing legend Mike Tyson in November as he eased to a points victory . But Jake isn't the only member of the Paul family that has been linked with a fight against McGregor. McGregor recently announced on social media that he was in talks to face Jake's brother - and WWE star - Logan in an exhibition contest. Taking to social media, McGregor denied rumours of a fight with UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria, before addressing news of another possible bout. He posted on X: "The rumours of a bout with [Topuria] are false. "I am in preliminary agreements with the Ambrani family to face Logan Paul in a boxing exhibition in India. "I have agreed. I will then seek my return to the Octagon." Just two hours after his claim, Jake responded by stating McGregor had initially contacted him over a possible meeting. He said: " Now it all makes sense why Conor McGregor & his management team have been desperately trying to get MVP to negotiate for a fight between us . "As we told them privately & I’m now saying it publicly... "The only way we’re willing to explore me vs Conor in a pro boxing/MMA fight is if Dana White/UFC are at the table directly or make it clear they are ok with discussions. "Conor is washed. Needs the Paul’s. Logan by however he wants." Jake and Dana White have been embroiled in a bitter feud for a couple of years now and the UFC president has previously declared he would never work with him or his brother. Given that McGregor still has two fights left on his deal with the UFC, the expectation would be that MMA's premier promotion would have to grant him permission to compete against Logan so it remains to be seen whether that fight can logistically happen. “First of all, I would never do business with those guys, just no, it's not what I do," White told ESPN three years ago. “I’m not gonna f****** loan them a guy, for f****** what? "There’s no way. You’ve got plenty of f****** goofballs out there that you can muster up to get in there and play these games that these guys are playing. I’m not your guy."New Report Highlights Piana's Continued Momentum in Leading Sustainability Practices and Successfully Shrinking its Environmental Footprint CARTERSVILLE, Ga. , Nov. 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Piana Technology , the 442-year-old Italian-made textile company renowned for its innovations in the fiber and nonwovens markets, proudly announced it has published its 2023 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report. What happens when 'The Simpsons' join 'Monday Night Football'? Find out during Bengals-CowboysRodgers: Jets 'my first option' if I play in 2025KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It took until the fourth quarter, when Kansas City was desperately trying to fend off the lowly Las Vegas Raiders, for Chiefs coach Andy Reid to finally make a drastic change to his offensive line. The Chiefs had tried Kingsley Suamataia at left tackle to start the season. When the rookie was getting beaten routinely for pressure and sacks, they switched to second-year pro Wanya Morris, who fared no better at protecting Patrick Mahomes . In the waning minutes of a 19-17 victory Friday — one that wasn't secure until Las Vegas fumbled away a chance at a winning field goal with 15 seconds left — the Chiefs slid All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney out to tackle. Mike Caliendo entered at guard. And while they didn't have much chance to work together, the move underscored what's been a season-long problem. “That was the right thing to do at the time,” Reid said afterward. “It just solidified things.” What is the solution moving forward? Well, the Chiefs signed former Pro Bowl left tackle D.J. Humphries last week, but he's been with the team for only a few days, and he's also coming off an ACL tear that sidelined him for the entire offseason. In a perfect world, Humphries would slide into the lineup in time for the Chiefs' game against the Chargers next Sunday. In a more realistic world, the Chiefs may need to make it through another week or two before he's ready to contribute, and that would mean putting Morris back into the lineup or keeping Thuney protecting Mahomes' blind side. “I would tell you it's disruptive to any offense when the quarterback is hit," Reid acknowledged, “and not able to get the ball off." Mahomes had gone 113 straight starts without being sacked five-plus times in a game; Carolina and Las Vegas have done it in consecutive weeks. And along with the sacks have been penalties on Morris and right tackle Jawaan Taylor, which have made it hard for a Kansas City offense that has had to adapt to injuries all season to consistently put together drives. “We have to make sure we clean those things up,” Reid said. “It's hard to go backwards in this league and win games.” Yet the Chiefs keep doing it. They have won an NFL-record 14 straight one-possession games, including five decided on the final play, this season. That has allowed them to piece together an 11-1 record and already clinch a postseason bye. “You're not satisfied with where we're at, even though we're winning football games,” Mahomes said. “Our goal over these last few games is to prove the team we really are going into the playoffs and play that way in the playoffs.” What’s working The passing game has started to produce — when Mahomes has time to throw — now that DeAndre Hopkins has become more ingrained in the offense. He had four catches for 90 yards against the Raiders, and his mere presence has opened things up for others, including Travis Kelce, who had seven catches for 68 yards. What needs help The Chiefs basically abandoned an unproductive running game against Las Vegas. Isiah Pacheco ran seven times for 44 yards in his return from an ankle injury, but 34 yards came on one carry. Kareem Hunt had 15 yards on his seven attempts. Stock up Two-time All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones had been held without a sack for seven consecutive games, but he managed to bring down Raiders quarterback Aidan O'Connell twice. That was important given how much trouble the Chiefs have had getting to the quarterback when they aren't blitzing this season. Stock down The entire Kansas City secondary has struggled for weeks, ever since cornerback Jaylen Watson was lost to a season-ending ankle injury. Nazeeh Johnson, Chamarri Conner and Bryan Cook in particular have been inconsistent in their coverage. Injuries The Chiefs made it through the Raiders game without any injuries. Key number 10 — The Chiefs have qualified for the playoffs for 10 consecutive seasons. That is the second-longest streak in NFL history behind the Patriots, who made it 11 straight years from 2009-19. Next steps The game against the Raiders on Black Friday means the Chiefs have a couple of extra days to prepare for the Chargers. The Chiefs have beaten them six straight times, including a 17-10 win on Sept. 29 in Los Angeles. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Dave Skretta, The Associated Press

The scrapping of the motion is expected to intensify protests calling for Yoon’s ouster and deepen political chaos in South Korea. Some tech industry leaders are pushing the incoming Trump administration to increase visas for highly skilled workers from other nations. GOP majorities in Congress will try to make that happen National Politics | Exhausted by political news? TV ratings and new poll say you’re not alone The heart of the argument is, for America to remain competitive, the country needs to expand the number of skilled visas it gives out. The previous Trump administration did not increase the skilled visa program, instead clamping down on visas for students and educated workers, increasing denial rates. Not everyone in corporate America thinks the skilled worker program is great. Former workers at IT company Cognizant recently won a federal class-action lawsuit that said the company favored Indian employees over Americans from 2013 to 2022. A Bloomberg investigation found Cognizant, and other similar outsourcing companies, mainly used its skilled work visas for lower-level positions. Workers alleged Cognizant preferred Indian workers because they could be paid less and were more willing to accept inconvenient or less-favorable assignments. Question: Should the U.S. increase immigration levels for highly skilled workers? Caroline Freund, UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy YES: Innovation is our superpower and it relies on people. Sourcing talent from 8 billion people in the world instead of 330 million here makes sense. Nearly half our Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or their children. Growing them also relies on expanding our skilled workforce. The cap on skilled-worker visas has hardly changed since the computer age started. With AI on the horizon, attracting and building talent is more important than ever. Kelly Cunningham, San Diego Institute for Economic Research YES: After years of openly allowing millions of undocumented entrants into the country, why is there controversy over legally increasing somewhat the number having desirable skills? Undocumented immigration significantly impacts lower skill level jobs and wages competing with domestic workers at every skill level. Why should special cases be made against those having higher skills? Could they just not walk across the border anyway, why make it more inconvenient to those with desirable skills? James Hamilton, UC San Diego YES: Knowledge and technology are key drivers of the U.S. economy. Students come from all over the world to learn at U.S. universities, and their spending contributed $50 billion to U.S. exports last year. Technological advantage is what keeps us ahead of the rest of the world. Highly skilled immigrants contribute much more in taxes than they receive in public benefits. The skills immigrants bring to America can make us all better off. Norm Miller, University of San Diego YES: According to Forbes, the majority of billion-dollar startups were founded by foreigners. I’ve interviewed dozens of data analysts and programmers from Berkeley, UCSD, USD and a few other schools and 75% of them are foreign. There simply are not enough American graduates to fill the AI and data mining related jobs now exploding in the U.S. If we wish to remain a competitive economy, we need highly skilled and bright immigrants to come here and stay. David Ely, San Diego State University YES: Being able to employ highly skilled workers from a larger pool of candidates would strengthen the competitiveness of U.S. companies by increasing their capacity to perform research and innovate. This would boost the country’s economic output. Skilled workers from other nations that cannot remain in the U.S. will find jobs working for foreign rivals. The demand for H-1B visas far exceeds the current cap of 85,000, demonstrating a need to modify this program. Phil Blair, Manpower YES: Every country needs skilled workers, at all levels, to grow its economy. We should take advantage of the opportunity these workers provide our employers who need these skills. It should be blended into our immigration policies allowing for both short and long term visas. Gary London, London Moeder Advisors YES: San Diego is a premiere example of how highly skilled workers from around the globe enrich a community and its regional economy. Of course Visa levels need to be increased. But let’s go further. Tie visas and immigration with a provision that those who are admitted and educated at a U.S. university be incentivized, or even required, to be employed in the U.S. in exchange for their admittance. Bob Rauch, R.A. Rauch & Associates NO: While attracting high-skilled immigrants can fill critical gaps in sectors like technology, health care and advanced manufacturing, increasing high-skilled immigration could displace American workers and drive down wages in certain industries. There are already many qualified American workers available for some of these jobs. We should balance the need for specialized skills with the impact on the domestic workforce. I believe we can begin to increase the number of visas after a careful review of abuse. Austin Neudecker, Weave Growth YES: We should expand skilled visas to drive innovation and economic growth. Individuals who perform high-skilled work in labor-restricted industries or graduate from respected colleges with relevant degrees should be prioritized for naturalization. We depend on immigration for GDP growth, tax revenue, research, and so much more. Despite the abhorrent rhetoric and curtailing of visas in the first term, I hope the incoming administration can be persuaded to enact positive changes to a clearly flawed system. Chris Van Gorder, Scripps Health YES: But it should be based upon need, not politics. There are several industries that have or could have skilled workforce shortages, especially if the next administration tightens immigration as promised and expected. Over the years, there have been nursing shortages that have been met partially by trained and skilled nurses from other countries. The physician shortage is expected to get worse in the years to come. So, this visa program may very well be needed. Jamie Moraga, Franklin Revere NO: While skilled immigration could boost our economy and competitiveness, the U.S. should prioritize developing our domestic workforce. Hiring foreign nationals in sensitive industries or government-related work, especially in advanced technology or defense, raises security concerns. A balanced approach could involve targeted increases in non-sensitive high-demand fields coupled with investment in domestic STEM education and training programs. This could address immediate needs while strengthening the long-term STEM capabilities of the American workforce. Stay ConnectedOpenAI, one of the world’s most valuable startups, originally began in 2015 as a nonprofit focused on AI research. But as the cost of achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI)—AI that could surpass human intelligence—soars, the company is shifting gears to attract more funding. On December 26, OpenAI announced in a blog post that it plans to set up a public benefit corporation ( PBC ) for its commercial operations, while keeping its nonprofit arm focused on charitable initiatives. Key changes in structure The proposed transformation will enable OpenAI’s existing for-profit division to function as a Delaware PBC “with ordinary shares of stock.” This shift is designed to attract the substantial investments required for the company’s ambitious projects. “The hundreds of billions of dollars that major companies are now investing into AI development show what it will really take for OpenAI to continue pursuing the mission,” OpenAI’s board explained . They emphasized the need for “conventional equity” to secure funding at this scale. OpenAI’s latest $6.6 billion funding round at a valuation of $157 billion hinged on whether the company could restructure its corporate model to remove a profit cap for investors. The board highlighted the importance of aligning its structure to sustain both its nonprofit goals and the for-profit capital needed to advance AI technologies. The nonprofit arm will retain a significant stake in the PBC, with its valuation determined by independent financial advisors. This structure aims to balance OpenAI’s mission-driven goals with the flexibility to raise capital effectively. | Financial landscape and market position OpenAI has experienced exponential growth, achieving the $157 billion valuation within two years of launching its groundbreaking chatbot, ChatGPT. Recent McKinsey research suggests that generative AI could contribute between $2.6 trillion and $4.4 trillion annually to the global economy, reflecting the immense potential of AI technologies. But despite generating $3.7 billion in revenue this year, OpenAI anticipates losses of $5 billion , underscoring the need for additional capital to sustain its trajectory.Scientists predict 60% chance of radio blackouts after sun unleashes solar flare toward EarthDouble Diversions Are The Flight Disruptions No One Wants

The on Monday followed a string of legal victories by conservative groups that have filed an onslaught of lawsuits challenging corporate and federal programs aimed at elevating minority and women-owned businesses and employees. The retreat from such programs crystalized with the election of former President Donald Trump, whose administration is certain to make dismantling diversity, equity and inclusion programs a priority. Trump’s incoming deputy chief of policy will be his former adviser , who leads a group called America First Legal that has aggressively challenged corporate DEI policies. “There has been a lot of reassessment of risk looking at programs that could be deemed to constitute reverse discrimination,” said Allan Schweyer, principal researcher the Human Capital Center at the Conference Board. “This is another domino to fall and it is a rather large domino,” he added. Among other changes, Walmart said it will no longer give priority treatment to suppliers owned by women or minorities. The company also will not renew a five-year commitment for a racial equity center set up in 2020 after the police killing of George Floyd. And it pulled out of a . Schweyer said the biggest trigger for companies making such changes is simply a reassessment of their legal risk exposure, which began after that ended affirmative action in college admissions. Since then, conservative groups using similar arguments have secured court victories against various diversity programs, especially those that steer contracts to minority or women-owned businesses. Most recently, the conservative Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty won a victory in a case against the U.S. Department of Transportation over its use of a program that gives priority to minority-owned businesses when it awards contracts. Companies are seeing a big legal risk in continuing with DEI efforts, said Dan Lennington, a deputy counsel at the institute. His organization says it has identified more than 60 programs in the federal government that it considers discriminatory, he said. “We have a legal landscape within the entire federal government, all three branches — the U.S. Supreme Court, the Congress and the President — are all now firmly pointed in the direction towards equality of individuals and individualized treatment of all Americans, instead of diversity, equity and inclusion treating people as members of racial groups,” Lennington said. The Trump administration is also likely to take direct aim at DEI initiatives through executive orders and other policies that affect private companies, especially federal contractors. “The impact of the election on DEI policies is huge. It can’t be overstated,” said Jason Schwartz, co-chair of the Labor & Employment Practice Group at law firm Gibson Dunn. With Miller returning to the White House, rolling back DEI initiatives is likely to be a priority, Schwartz said. “Companies are trying to strike the right balance to make clear they’ve got an inclusive workplace where everyone is welcome, and they want to get the best talent, while at the same time trying not to alienate various parts of their employees and customer base who might feel one way or the other. It’s a virtually impossible dilemma,” Schwartz said. A recent survey by Pew Research Center showed that workers are divided on the merits of DEI policies. While still broadly popular, the share of workers who said focusing on workplace diversity was mostly a good thing fell to 52% in the October survey, compared to 56% in a similar survey in February 2023. Rachel Minkin, a research associated at Pew called it a small but significant shift in short amount of time. There will be more companies pulling back from their DEI policies, but it likely won’t be a retreat across the board, said David Glasgow, executive director of the Meltzer Center for Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging at New York University. “There are vastly more companies that are sticking with DEI,” Glasgow said. “The only reason you don’t hear about it is most of them are doing it by stealth. They’re putting their heads down and doing DEI work and hoping not to attract attention.” Glasgow advises organizations to stick to their own core values, because attitudes toward the topic can change quickly in the span of four years. “It’s going to leave them looking a little bit weak if there’s a kind of flip-flopping, depending on whichever direction the political winds are blowing,” he said. One reason DEI programs exist is because without those programs, companies may be vulnerable to lawsuits for traditional discrimination. “Really think carefully about the risks in all directions on this topic,” Glasgow said. Walmart confirmed will no longer consider race and gender as a litmus test to improve diversity when it offers supplier contracts. Walmart says its U.S. businesses sourced more than $13 billion in goods and services from diverse suppliers in fiscal year 2024, including businesses owned by minorities, women and veterans. It was unclear how its relationships with such business would change going forward. Organizations that that have partnered with Walmart on its diversity initiatives offered a cautious response. The Women’s Business Enterprise National Council, a non-profit that last year named Walmart one of America’s top corporation for women-owned enterprises, said it was still evaluating the impact of Walmart’s announcement. Pamela Prince-Eason, the president and CEO of the organization, said she hoped Walmart’s need to cater to its diverse customer base will continue to drive contracts to women-owned suppliers even if the company has no explicit dollar goals. “I suspect Walmart will continue to have one of the most inclusive supply chains in the World,” Prince-Eason wrote. “Any retailer’s ability to serve the communities they operate in will continue to value understanding their customers, (many of which are women), in order to better provide products and services desired and no one understands customers better than Walmart.” Walmart’s announcement came after the company spoke directly with conservative political commentator and activist Robby Starbuck, who has been going after corporate DEI policies, calling out individual companies on the social media platform X. Several of those companies have subsequently announced that they are pulling back their initiatives, including , Harley-Davidson, and . Walmart confirmed to The Associated Press that it will better monitor its third-party marketplace items to make sure they don’t feature sexual and transgender products aimed at minors. The company also will stop participating in the Human Rights Campaign’s annual benchmark index that measures workplace inclusion for LGBTQ+ employees. A Walmart spokesperson added that some of the changes were already in progress and not as a result of conversations that it had with Starbuck. RaShawn “Shawnie” Hawkins, senior director of the HRC Foundation’s Workplace Equality Program, said companies that “abandon” their commitments workplace inclusion policies “are shirking their responsibility to their employees, consumers, and shareholders.” She said the buying power of LGBTQ customers is powerful and noted that the index will have record participation of more than 1,400 companies in 2025. Make that eight goals in two games since the international break for Arsenal after its 5-1 hammering of Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League on Tuesday, tying the English team’s heaviest ever away win in the competition. Odegaard is back in Arsenal’s team after missing two months with an ankle injury . In that time, Mikel Arteta’s attack stuttered, with a 2-0 loss to Bournemouth and a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle dropping the Gunners well off the pace in the Premier League. There was also a 0-0 draw at Atalanta in the Champions League as well as a 1-0 loss to Inter Milan last month, when Odegaard made his comeback from injury as an 89th-minute substitute. Since then, Arsenal hasn’t lost and the goals have returned. After a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday came the cruise in Lisbon — and Odegaard was at the heart of everything as Sporting’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end. “He’s an unbelievable player,” Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka said of Odegaard. “The day he returned, there was a big smile on my face. You can see the chemistry we have. I hope he stays fit for the rest of the season.” Odegaard was involved in the build-up to Arsenal’s first two goals against Sporting — scored by Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz — and was fouled to win the penalty converted by Saka in the 65th to restore Arsenal’s three-goal lead at 4-1. Odegaard was seen flexing his leg after that but continued untroubled and was substituted in the 78th minute. The last thing Arteta would want now is another injury to Odegaard as Arsenal attempts to reel in first-place Liverpool in the Premier League. Liverpool is already nine points ahead of fourth-place Arsenal after 12 games. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer
