Absent from the schedule is the Shriners Children's Open in Las Vegas. After the Ryder Cup next September at Bethpage Black, the PGA Tour events resume with the Sanderson Farms Championship on October 2-5. The PGA Tour's Japan stop, the Baycurrent Classic, will be October 9-12 at Yokohama Country Club followed by the Black Desert Championship on October 23-26 in Utah. Those ranked 51st and beyond will take FedEx Cup points into the fall to try and accumulate eligibility points for the 2026 campaign. Three PGA Tour Challenge season events will be played next December -- the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas hosted by Tiger Woods, the LPGA-PGA mixed-team Grant Thornton Invitational and the PNC Championship parent-child event. Tour commissioner Jay Monahan also announced Tuesday that the PGA is searching for a new chief executive officer whose job would be to grow the business side of the operation in light of the $1.5 billion investment in PGA Tour Enterprises by Strategic Sports Group, a set of team sports owners. js/bb
Kate Middleton's Aspinal of London bag has 20% off in Black Friday saleRussian state news agencies say ousted Syrian leader Bashar Assad is in Moscow and given asylum DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Russian state news agencies are reporting that ousted Syrian President Bashar Assad has arrived in Moscow with his family and has been given asylum. The agencies cited an unidentified Kremlin source. The Associated Pres was not immediately able to verify the reports but has contacted the Kremlin for comment. Assad reportedly left Syria early Sunday. Syrians have been pouring into streets echoing with celebratory gunfire after a stunning rebel advance reached the capital, ending the Assad family’s 50 years of iron rule. The fall of Bashar Assad after 13 years of war in Syria brings to an end a decades-long dynasty BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian President Bashar Assad has fled the country. Assad’s departure on Sunday brings to a dramatic close his nearly 14-year struggle to hold onto power in a brutal civil war that became a proxy battlefield for regional and international powers. Assad’s exit stood in stark contrast to his first months as Syria’s unlikely president in 2000, when many hoped he would be a young reformer after three decades of his father’s iron grip. But faced with protests of his rule that erupted in March 2011, Assad turned to his father's brutal tactics to crush dissent. A long stalemate was quickly broken when opposition groups in northwest Syria launched a surprise offensive late last month. Who is Abu Mohammed al-Golani, the leader of the insurgency that toppled Syria's Assad? BEIRUT (AP) — Abu Mohammed al-Golani, the militant leader who led the stunning insurgency that toppled Syria’s President Bashar Assad, has spent years working to remake his public image and that of his fighters. He renounced longtime ties to al-Qaida and depicts himself as a champion of pluralism and tolerance. The extent of that transformation from jihadi extremist to would-be state builder is now put to the test. The 42-year-old al-Golani is labeled a terrorist by the United States. He has not appeared publicly since Damascus fell early Sunday. But he and his insurgent force, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, stand to be a major player in whatever comes next. Trump says he can't guarantee tariffs won't raise US prices and won't rule out revenge prosecutions WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump says he can’t guarantee his promised tariffs on key U.S. foreign trade partners won’t raise prices for American consumers. And he's suggesting once more that some political rivals and federal officials who pursued legal cases against him should be imprisoned. The president-elect made the comments in a wide-ranging interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” that aired Sunday. He also touched on monetary policy, immigration, abortion and health care, and U.S. involvement in Ukraine, Israel and elsewhere. Trump often mixed declarative statements with caveats, at one point cautioning “things do change.” Trump calls for immediate cease-fire in Ukraine and says a US withdrawal from NATO is possible WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump is pushing Russian leader Vladimir Putin to act to reach an immediate cease-fire with Ukraine. Trump describes it as part of his active efforts as president-elect to end the war despite being weeks from taking office. Trump also said he would be open to reducing military aid to Ukraine and pulling the United States out of NATO. Those are two threats that have alarmed Ukraine, NATO allies and many in the U.S. national security community. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says any deal would have to pave the way to a lasting peace. The Kremlin's spokesman says Moscow is open to talks with Ukraine. The hunt for UnitedHealthcare CEO's elusive killer yields new evidence, but few answers NEW YORK (AP) — Police don’t know who he is, where he is, or why he did it. As the frustrating search for UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killer got underway for a fifth day Sunday, investigators reckoned with a tantalizing contradiction: They have troves of evidence, but the shooter remains an enigma. One conclusion they are confident of, however: It was a targeted attack, not a random one. On Sunday morning, police declined to comment on the contents of a backpack found in Central Park that they believe was carried by the killer. South Korean prosecutors detain ex-defense chief over martial law imposition SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean prosecutors have detained a former defense minister who allegedly recommended last week’s brief but stunning martial law imposition to President Yoon Suk Yeol. Local media say that ex-Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun voluntarily appeared on Sunday at a Seoul prosecutors’ office, where he had his mobile phone confiscated and was detained. A law enforcement official says Kim was later sent to a Seoul detention facility. Kim's detention came a day after Yoon avoided an opposition-led bid to impeach him, with most ruling party lawmakers boycotting a floor vote to prevent a two-thirds majority needed to suspend his presidential powers. Trump's return may be a boon for Netanyahu, but challenges abound in a changed Middle East TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is jubilant about President-elect Donald Trump's return to the White House. Trump's first term policies skewed heavily in favor of Israel, and he has picked stalwart Israel supporters for key positions in his administration. But much has transpired since Trump left office in early 2021. The turmoil in the Middle East, the lofty ambitions of Netanyahu’s far-right governing coalition and Netanyahu’s own personal relationship with the president-elect could dampen that enthusiasm and complicate what on the surface looks like a seamless alliance. A farming project in South Africa is helping deaf people build skills and find jobs JOHANNESBURG (AP) — In South Africa, where the general unemployment rate is over 32%, deaf people face even steeper hurdles. Unlike their counterparts who can hear and speak, they must struggle to communicate in sign language while trying to gain opportunities for jobs and skills development. Now a deaf entrepreneur who quit her job at one of the biggest banks in the country has created an organization where the deaf can be trained in agriculture, develop their skills and earn a sustainable living. The farming sector is emerging as a solace for those with disabilities who also face the dire levels of unemployment in Africa’s most developed economy. First 12-team College Football Playoff set, Oregon seeded No. 1 and SMU edges Alabama for last spot SMU captured the last open spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff, bumping Alabama to land in a bracket that placed undefeated Oregon at No. 1. The selection committee preferred the Mustangs (11-2), losers of a heartbreaker in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game, who had a far less difficult schedule than Alabama (9-3) of the SEC but one fewer loss. The first-of-its-kind 12-team bracket marks a new era for college football, though the Alabama-SMU debate made clear there is no perfect formula. The tournament starts Dec. 20-21 with four first-round games. It concludes Jan. 20 with the national title game in Atlanta.Getting smart about car insurance can provide cost savings and peace of mind
As someone who tests smart-home technology, I have a house full of robots and sensors. In fact, there’s always a stack of boxes of things waiting to be tested In my home. Despite my access to all of this fun tech, there are still some items that I’d love to add to my daily routine. If you’re still trying to figure out what to get the tech lover in your life, here are my suggestions. A scrolling ring If you have a Kindle or TikTok habit, you know all too well the hand cramping that comes from having to hold and flip through with your thumb. There is a solution—the scrolling ring. A heated neck massager There’s this neck massager that looks like a scarf you stretch around you, and put your arms through. I want one. I can see how the pressure from your arms would help the massager get right up against your neck to really dig in and work out your bound-up muscles. Super Mario Bros. brick lamp I’ve been obsessed with this Super Mario Bros. question mark light up brick. It attaches to the wall or wherever else you’d like to stick it, and yes, you can actually punch it, and yes, it will make that deeply satisfying sound effect from the classic game. Desk vacuum cleaner My desk is where everything goes—mail, projects, books, gloves and my purse—and so it often needs a cleaning. I love this cordless vacuum cleaner that I can keep nearby and grab as needed to vacuum my keyboard and mousepad if I need to, without needing to clear away pens and cords.GREEN BAY, Wis. Mariah Carey shut down rumors that her new Christmas video was generated by artificial intelligence, claiming bad lighting and red lipstick were to blame for the odd visuals. Carey, who filmed a Christmas-themed video thanking her fans, had commenters questioning if the video was actually real with one user writing, “that is AI for sure!!” Another chimed in, “Definitely AI. It’s always something off with the eyes.” The clip, which celebrated the 30th anniversary of her album, “Merry Christmas,” was made for Spotify Wrapped, and shown to users who counted Carey as one of their most-listened artists. Carey responded to the backlash from the video, saying it was the red lipstick and lighting throwing viewers off. “Bad lighting and a red lip have you all thinking this is AI?? There’s a reason I’m not a fan of either of those things,” she wrote on X. The owner, Edith Stone Lentini, received rental request for the home for Oct. 28 about a Halloween party for 14-15 year olds. “My daughter wants to throw a little Halloween party for her and her friends and I was wondering if that’s possible,” the AirBnB rental request message read, obtained by the Nantucket Current . “I would be there to monitor the kids and it would just be a fun get together.” After ignoring the “sketchy” request, a police officer called her one night informing her a rager was being thrown at the house. Police told Lentini that the high schoolers broke in through an unlocked window, and threw the party despite the ignored request. The teenagers took extraordinary caution, however: rolling up the white rug, taking all the pictures off the walls, moving furniture aside and more. “As much as I’m upset about this, they did take care of the house,” Lentini told the Nantucket Current. “The most damage was just sticky floors. They even put ‘do not enter’ tape around the TV stand.” The house rents for $5,500 a week in the summer, and was worth an estimated $2.3 million. Photos of the home can be seen on realtor.com , with the last sale in 2012 for $1.3 million. Scouted selects products independently. The secret to the Tenuto Mini is the three robust motors that deliver powerful vibrations on key erogenous zones at the head or base of the penis. Some suggested he had a tryst with influencer Breckie Hill, a claim Hill seemingly confirmed when she re-posted a TikTok about their speculated romance. Keoghan, however, made no mention of Hill in his statement. “The messages I have received no person should ever have to read them. Absolute lies, hatred, disgusting commentary about my appearance, character, how I am as a parent, and every other inhumane thing you can imagine,” the actor wrote , accusing trolls of “Knocking on my grannies door. Sitting outside my baby boys house intimidating them.” Keoghan, who has a young son, also pleaded with social media users to think of his child before they post about him. “I need you to remeber (sic) he has to read ALL of this about his father when he is older,” he said. We were trying to figure out the diagnosis, but according to the doctors, they are sure that he has some sort of blood disease causing all kinds of problems,” said Jase, 55. He added, “And he has early stages of Alzheimer’s. A Friday night NBA game between the San Antonio Spurs and the Sacramento Kings culminated in a tense moment after Spurs’ power forward Zach Collins was ejected from the game and flipped off a referee in anger. Collins was called for a hard foul on Kings’ star Domantas Sabonis and proceeded to protest the referee’s decision. This led to him receiving a technical foul, his second in just two quarters, prompting his removal from the game—but not before Collins gave the ref a piece of his mind by giving him the finger. Collins was then seen being consoled by his coaches before he headed off to the locker room. The Spurs ultimately lost 140-113, but the viral moment rippled across the internet. The Sporting News reported that Collins could receive a fine for the gesture, and social media commentators seemed to agree. “Welp there’s a suspension and a fine,” wrote one commentator on X . Another added, “Enjoy your 1 game suspension.” While other fans questioned the referee’s call after two other players, including Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant , faced similar ejections. “I like how all ejection in 3 games are against the Kings,” a commentator added . Take a look at his reaction lol pic.twitter.com/vlRymXD9IM New York Police Department officials confirmed Friday they believe the man who fatally shot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Midtown hotel on Wednesday morning has since fled the city, but they are continuing to search for evidence related to the crime—and the man responsible. Multiple news sources now report that authorities have found a backpack in the southern part of Central Park that they believe may have belonged to the as-yet unidentified shooter . The backpack was found along a possible escape route the suspect may have taken as he cycled through the park after the “targeted” attack on 50-year-old Thompson, as he was set to attend a meeting with United Healthcare investors. It has been sent, unopened, to a forensics lab for testing, according to CNN . Other evidence that the police have found so far include a burner phone, water bottle, a Starbucks coffee cup and even a candy wrapper.
Gus Malzahn is resigning as Central Florida's head coach to become Florida State 's offensive coordinator, a person familiar with the hire told The Associated Press on Saturday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Seminoles have not confirmed Malzahn's move, which is pending a state background check. ESPN first reported the decision. The Knights made official that Malzahn is leaving in a statement released a day after UCF (4-8) concluded its season with a 28-14 loss to Utah. “We would like to thank Coach Malzahn for his contributions to our football program over the past four seasons, including our transition into the Big 12 Conference," the school said. "We appreciate his professionalism and dedication to our student-athletes throughout his tenure at UCF and wish he and his wife, Kristi, the very best in their future endeavors.” Malzahn finished with a 28-24 mark in four years at UCF, the last two ending with losing records after joining the Big 12. He coached at Auburn for eight seasons before being fired in 2020. Malzahn replaces offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Alex Atkins, who was fired Nov. 10 following a 52-3 loss at Notre Dame. The Seminoles rank 131st out of 134 in total offense and scoring offense, averaging 15.8 points a game heading into Saturday night's rivalry game against Florida. The Seminoles (2-9) have dropped significantly since going 13-1 last season and winning the Atlantic Coast Conference championship. The Knights, meanwhile, struggled mightily in Malzahn's fourth season — most of it because of quarterback issues. Four players took snaps from center as the Knights finished 2-7 in conference play. It was the program's worst record since going 0-12 in former coach George O’Leary’s final season in 2015. Florida State coach Mike Norvell fired Atkins, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller and receivers coach Ron Dugans amid the Seminoles' season-long skid. A production assistant on the second season of “Arcane” has slammed an A.I. version of the show’s trailer in a post on X. @Lordupe shared the video and wrote that the cartoon “doesn’t add anything concrete or artistic.” “I’m profoundly opposed to this kind of approach. Our artists have worked hard for years to produce the most beautiful shots possible, to me it’s a huge lack of respect,” he wrote. “The framing is identical and the ‘realistic’ aspect doesn’t add anything concrete or artistic.” I’m profoundly opposed to this kind of approach. It appears that the company has since deleted its video. In October, “Superman” director James Gunn for a fan-made A.I. trailer that aired on France 2. Gunn shared the post from the French news channel and captioned it, “ .” The director previously ripped into an A.I.-generated image that purportedly showed actor David Corenswet as Superman — before any official photos had been shared. “Let’s see. Can the man on the left take a photo holding an amorphous black blob while looking through an eyeball on the front of his cap? Can the man on the right’s torso grow out of his right hip and can he be stupid enough to wear his pants with the drawstring in the back?” Gunn wrote. “Are David Corenswet’s hands made of wax without any bones or veins? And might Superman’s trunks be knitted with yarn? Ask yourself these questions and I’m certain you’ll be able to answer the question on your own.” “Arcane” ended with its second season, which was . The second installment in the show featured a battle that saw the rise of some of the Champions and the deaths of others. Several characters died, including Vander (who had previously died twice, but this time for good), Ambessa, Jayce and Viktor. Though the show was always planned to run two seasons, there have been hints that a few spin-offs could be in the works — and the series finale seemed to show that there are two strong possibilities. One possible spin-off could follow Vi and Cait’s travels via airship, and a second could focus on Mel, who is heading back home after the battle. Created by Christian Linke and Alex Yee, “Arcane” is set in the “League of Legends” universe and draws from the popular video game franchise. The show, which took six years to make, follows the story of Vi and Jinx, two sisters who are trapped between their beliefs and technology as they navigate two cities: Piltover and Zaun. Is Outlook down? Thousands of Microsoft 365 users report outage issuesThis is the third Netflix special from Ronny Chieng , although curiously, his first two specials are not currently available for streaming on the platform?!? Is it because Chieng currently co-stars in the new Hulu series, Interior Chinatown ? That cannot possibly explain why Netflix is keeping The Daily Show comedian’s back catalog in hiding. Especially because his stand-up has been so incisive. And it continues apace here. RONNY CHIENG: LOVE TO HATE IT : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT? The Gist: Ronny Chieng, familiar to fans of The Daily Show as well as of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (he jokes in this hour about one such awkwardly-timed encounter when he was recognized for his role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ), filmed his third Netflix special in Honolulu. Hawaii has a special place in his heart, and not just because he filmed the Disney+ series, Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. , there. Chieng relates how he not only has encountered people who politically side with MAGA on the islands, but also how he has adapted to maintain friendships with them despite their political and philosophical differences. He similarly takes a deep dive into the dark side of men’s self-help influencers online. And he makes fun of himself for the responsibility he was given in helping his wife’s fertility treatments, all while reflecting on what he might be like if he becomes a parent, or if he becomes anything like his own parents. What Comedy Specials Will It Remind You Of?: Quite a few stand-ups have filmed specials in Hawaii. Among recent entries to the field, hours from Jo Koy ( Comin’ In Hot ), Gabriel Iglesias ( Aloha Fluffy ), and Anjelah Johnson ( Mahalo & Goodnight ). But Chieng’s sensibility onstage as an immigrant with astute political observations on America shares a lot more with his former co-worker at Comedy Central: Trevor Noah. Memorable Jokes: Chieng opens by making fun of his friends and classmates for how becoming parents has made them look older and uglier, joking that having kids means you’ve given up on your own hopes and dreams. “I’m still trying here!” he exclaims. And yet, he and his wife are still preparing for the possibility of parenthood, which leads into a chunk about fertility treatments and his role in that. Much of this is well-trodden ground for men in comedy, but Chieng still gets enjoyment from us and himself out of what the fertility process says about the American healthcare system, as well as what it says about men and their sexual habits. Besides, it leads to a funny sight gag where Chieng attempts to bring his semen sample back to the lab, only to be recognized by a Shang-Chi fan. Chieng digs a bit deeper when he weighs in on how something as simple as wanting to learn how to lift weights can lead straight men down an algorithmic rabbit hole on YouTube, where they’re eventually served up videos by Jordan Peterson and Andrew Tate, and then get primed up to riot within a matter of weeks. “That’s not even an exaggerated timeline,” Chieng claims. “Every man in this room has lost a buddy to the algorithm. We all now someone who lost their f—ing mind on that men’s self-help, Andrew Tate masculinity, YouTube self-help algorithm.” He notes how even the richest people behind the algorithms fall victim to this, and how he himself isn’t immune to it, either. “We’re on a razor’s edge to being a piece of shit,” Chieng says. “An Instagram post could push it either way.” Filming this before the elections, Chieng also reminds us that the people who support Donald Trump “have a point, but you don’t have the vocabulary to describe your reality because you didn’t read enough,” and he counts some of the ways in which America has lost touch with its own greatness, going farther and further into detail than you’d expect a comedian to do. If only he could figure out how to talk to Baby Boomers like his parents, though, and get them to see through all of the scams and misinformation out there. Our Take: Whereas too many comedians today may see our divisions and look to take advantage of them for their own self-interested profit motive, Chieng speaks with a refreshing awareness and astuteness about how Americans are divided but perhaps not in as many ways as we’re led to believe. His bits about social media algorithms and influencers and socio-economic trends demonstrate a savviness and sophistication that not only make him a great correspondent for The Daily Show , but also would serve the show well were they ever to promote him as a permanent anchor for the late-night satire. And then there’s his increasing self-awareness about his place within his own family. It’s at once brutal, and at its core, quite touching to witness Chieng go after his parents and their generation for not only being out of touch with technology but also for leaning into stereotypes about parents who would rather their children become lawyers or doctors than comedians. Stand-up comedy, Chieng says onstage, is and was “the only thing I ever wanted to do my whole life,” and he adds: “you guys are cheering because you know this is way better than having kids.” And yet he realizes he might become his own parents should he ever have a kid who wants to go into comedy. Which might not turn out to be a bad thing, as Chieng reveals in a closing story how much he discovered about his own relationship with his father after his father suddenly died on Christmas Eve in 2018. It leads to some bittersweet moments, even if in the end, Chieng can claim victory in a long-running sibling rivalry. He’s also winning these days in comedy, too. Our Call: STREAM IT. My colleague Jason Zinoman over at The New York Times proclaimed this the best comedy special of 2024. I haven’t finished compiling my annual Top 10, so I’m not as willing to commit to that just yet, but I can safely say that Chieng’s observational comedy ranks quite high compared to his comedy peers these days, of any generation. Sean L. McCarthy works the comedy beat. He also podcasts half-hour episodes with comedians revealing origin stories: The Comic’s Comic Presents Last Things First .
Online criminals have stolen $950,000 that was earmarked for the rehabilitation of public housing in Marin City, the Marin Housing Authority said. The money was part of $3 million the county loaned to the housing agency in March for the work at Golden Gate Village. “We are actively working to identify funding sources to replace what was lost,” said Kimberly Carroll, director of the Marin Housing Authority. Carroll vowed that the theft would not prevent the Marin City project from proceeding. “We won’t stop the forward process of our renovation,” Carroll said. “We can’t. That has to continue.” She also provided assurances that the breach would have no effect on the people living in apartments the authority oversees. “We want to assure our clients and stakeholders that no services will be impacted,” Carroll said, “and there will be no reduction in the funding or resources dedicated to our programs.” Jason Balderama, a county technology official, has started working as consultant for the housing authority to coordinate the investigation and advise on how to strengthen its internet defenses. Balderama has enlisted the assistance of the California Cybersecurity Integration Center and the federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, as well as submitting a report to the FBI. “It’s an ongoing investigation,” Balderama said. “They’re still trying to determine if they can pinpoint the exact root cause.” Carroll said investigators suspect the criminals used a “phishing” attack to gain access to several email accounts belonging to the agency’s employees, including hers. Phishing is an online scam in which attackers use emails, text messages or phone calls to trick people into revealing sensitive information such as their usernames and passwords. “It’s unfortunately a very common occurrence,” Balderama said. He said some of the housing agency’s email accounts were particularly vulnerable because they lacked “two-factor authentication,” a security procedure that combines two forms of identification to guard against unauthorized access. In addition to the typical username and password, it adds a second factor, sometimes a code sent via text message. Carroll said the scammers managed to gain access to six email accounts belonging to housing authority employees. Then, using the emails to pose as employees, they hijacked two large payments meant for Burbank Housing, the agency’s development partner for the Marin City project. Burbank is overseeing pre-development work for the project, determining what repairs need to be made to the 300 residences at Golden Gate Village. The housing authority has a $1.4 million contract with Burbank for the work. “The bad actors probably accessed our email accounts in July,” Carroll said. “But we didn’t find out until September.” Carroll said the $950,000 in payments to Burbank were dispatched in two large tranches. The first one went out in late August. “We sent it out to them,” she said. “We followed all of our protocols. We never heard from Burbank that they didn’t get the money until about three weeks later.” Carroll said Burbank notified the housing authority it hadn’t received the August payment on Sept. 16, about two or three days after the agency had dispatched the second tranche. “That was gone in a flash,” she said. Burbank Housing could not be reached for comment. Balderama said the odds are long that authorities will identify the thieves or recover the funds. He said the perpetrators might be based in the United States, or they could be located in any number of countries, including India, China and Russia. “It’s so easy to get private VPN service that the threat actors can make it look like they’re coming from basically anywhere,” Balderama said, referring to virtual private networks. A VPN shields its users from identification by encrypting their data and masking their internet protocol addresses. Carroll said the housing authority still has about $1.6 million left with which to move forward with the rehabilitation of Golden Gate Village. “We may have a conversation with the county to see if we would be able to borrow additional funds to help get us through if we need that,” Carrol said. Marin County Executive Derek Johnson, however, said there has been no discussion of the county shouldering any of the $950,000 loss. “Marin Housing Authority is assuming full responsibility and has committed to looking for alternative sources to recover the $950,000,” Johnson wrote in an email. “We anticipate MHA will be able to repay the $3 million loan as planned.” Earlier this month, following Johnson’s recommendation, the Board of Supervisors approved spending $500,000 for an organizational and operational assessment of the Marin Housing Authority, the Marin County Community Development Agency and the Marin County Department of Public Works. At the time, Johnson said he envisioned the county providing the housing authority assistance with finance, personnel and information technology. Both Johnson and Carroll said Monday that the plan for the assessment was formulated before the discovery of the $950,000 theft. “This breach underscores the need for the agency to undergo an organizational assessment to make sure it’s utilizing resources in the most efficient way, and also has the organizational structure, security, systems, and procedures in place to deliver high quality service and achieve its mission,” Johnson wrote. The crime was the largest theft of Marin public funds since Eric Faulks, a former county official, embezzled $1.9 million from the rental assistance program. Faulks pleaded guilty to four counts of grand theft and began serving a six-year prison sentence in November 2022. Since 2020, two Marin County Civil Grand Jury reports have examined the level of internet security preparedness in the county. The first came after the county experienced at least five hacks from July 2017 through August 2018. The fifth attack concluded with the hacker conning the county’s finance office into wiring $309,000 to the hacker’s bank accounts. The county managed to recover approximately $63,000. After the 2020 report, Marin County created what is now known as the Marin Security and Privacy Council (MSPC). Originally formed to provide internet security information and best practices to Marin’s municipalities, the council has been expanded to include nonprofits and other private organizations. The Marin Housing Authority became a MSPC member prior to the recent attack. “It is up to each MSPC member organization to use the information, best practices and recommendations as they see fit,” Balderama said. “Now that I am acting as a cybersecurity consultant for MHA, I am working with them to ensure that the resources and best practices shared through the MSPC are being actively implemented.” The second grand jury report was released earlier this year. Its recommendations include having the county hire three new employees to bolster internet security. The grand jury said two should be “system-engineering” positions responsible for conducting security risk assessments and implementing security solutions for public agencies.Has Red Sweep historically benefited equity markets?
