The ECI continued its performance streak going with smooth conduct of assembly polls in Haryana, Jharkhand and Maharashtra later in the year. After Lok Sabha elections, the opposition was confident for the next set of state elections in 2024, owing to BJP being brusied after poor results. However, the BJP bounced back in spectacular fashion in the assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra, regaining its electoral power. Here are eight elections that changed political landscape of India: Arunachal Pradesh: The incumbent Arunachal Pradesh government of BJP retained their government and bettered their number as they won 46 seats in the 2024 elections , which is 5 more than their numbers in 2019. As the performance of the other parties in the state is concerned, the National People’s Party secured the second position with 5 seats, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) got 3, the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) got 2, the Indian National Congress got just 1, while three seats were claimed by independent candidates. Notably, BJP already won 10 seats unopposed in the state as the opposition failed to field any contestant on all these 10 seats. Sikkim: The ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) increased its tally to 31 seats in the Assembly elections 2024, up from 17 in 2019. In March, the BJP had called off its alliance with the SKM describing it as “corrupt”. On the other hand, the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), which ruled the state for 25 years in a row till 2019, won one seat. In 2019, the party had won 15. This follows the trend of the SDF’s decline from 2009 when it won all seats in the State. Since 2014, when SDF first contested in the elections, the party has unseated the SKM from the Assembly. The BJP contested in 31 assembly seats but failed to win a single one in Sikkim where it had 12 members in the outgoing House. The BJP could secure only 5.18 per cent of the votes in the Himalayan state. The saffron party decided to go alone in the Sikkim Assembly polls after severing its alliance with the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang after the seat-sharing talks broke down on the latter's reluctance to meet the BJP's demand for a respectable number of seats. Andhra Pradesh: It was a landslide victory in the Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly polls as the Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP-BJPJSP alliance routed the YSR Jagan Mohan Reddy regime, winning 165 out of 175 seats. The TDP alone cleared the majority mark with 136 seats, cementing former CM Naidu’s position as he makes his comeback after his party’s crushing defeat in the 2019 assembly polls, months after he was arrested under allegations of being involved in the Skill Development Corporation scam. The BJP won eight seats in the state, an improvement from winning nothing in the 2019 polls. Odisha: It was historic win for BJP in the the that was ruled by Biju Janata Dal for decaded. In the polls, Patnaik's BJD was defeated by the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state elections, dethroning Patnaik after five terms in power. The BJP stormed to power in Odisha, ending the 24-year rule of the BJD, by winning 78 seats in the 147-member assembly. The Patnaik-led party, on the other hand, bagged 51 seats, while the Congress won 14 constituencies, the CPI (M) one. Three Independent nominees also emerged victorious. thE BJD failed to win any of the Lok Sabha seats in the state, with the BJP bagging 20 and the Congress one. Jammu and Kashmir: BJP won 29 seats in Jammu and Kashmir elections surpassing its previous highest tally of 25 seats in the 2014 election. As per Election Commission of India data, BJP secured 25.64 per cent vote share. After a decade, Jammu and Kashmir has elected its representatives for the legislative Assembly. The Union Territory’s people have given a historic mandate to the National Conference (NC)-Congress-CPI(M) alliance, with 49 of the 90 Assembly seats. The last time any party or pre-election bloc crossed the majority mark was in the 1996 Assembly election. Haryana: The BJP on Tuesday won a historic third consecutive term in Haryana after winning 48 of the 90 seats. The win is significant for several reasons, reflecting both the party's strategic positioning and the evolving political landscape in Haryana. The saffron party became the first to achieve a hattrick of wins in Haryana. The achievement not only highlights the party's dominance in the state's politics but also sets a precedent for future elections. BJP has shown once again that it can maintain power over terms and battle anti-incumbency. Jharkhand: The year 2024 in Jharkhand unfolded like a gripping political drama, a narrative filled with suspense, unexpected twists, and electrifying comebacks. The year began like a Bollywood thriller with Chief Minister Hemant Soren's mysterious disappearance from Delhi sparking widespread speculations. This prompted JMM to elect Champai Soren, a loyal aide of JMM supremo Shibu Soren, who earned the sobriquet 'Jharkhand's Tiger' for his contribution to the long fight for the creation of a separate state in the 1990s, as party leader. Champai ascended to the chair of the state's chief minister in February and the ruling JMM-led alliance proved its majority. In a stunning comeback, Hemant Soren's JMM-led alliance in November stormed to power for a second consecutive term, winning 56 seats in the 81-member assembly, despite an all-out blitz by the BJP-led NDA which managed only 24 seats. Maharashtra: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has scripted a landslide victory in Maharashtra. It has won (leading) in over 130 seats on its own while the Mahayuti alliance got 225 seats - way more than the required halfway mark of 145. This was in stark contrast to BJP's big setback during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Just six months back, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP had an ambitious target of 400 plus seats. But the party failed terribly and the saffron party could not even cross the majority mark, winning only 240 seats in the Lok Sabha, down from 303 in 2019. Barbara Corcoran is not always on the hunt for intimate time with husband Bill Higgins . The Shark Tank star recently discussed why she and her husband—who tied the knot on Valentine’s Day in 1988—have separate bedrooms and how rarely the pair have sex. "I think there's something to be said about your own private space,” Barbara said during the Dec. 2 episode of The Jamie Kern Lima Show . “I lead a very busy life. I have a huge family that I'm always entertaining. I have very sincere, active friends and so what I need more than anything else is a respite, and my husband is not relaxing." In fact, the real estate mogul—who shares kids Tom , 30, and Kate , 19, with the retired Navy captain—shared that Bill is full of excitement. “He has more ideas in his head that make no sense,” Barbara continued. “For me to come up with the energy at the end of a day to listen to them and to nod and contribute to the conversation, I run a little short." “Better I go to my room, and have an hour to myself,” she added. “If I go to the living room, my husband follows me. I go to my bedroom, he doesn't dare come in.” And when it comes to having intimate moments together, the millionaire investor laughed and explained they only happen on her terms. “I have to invite him into my bedroom,” Barbara shared, “and I like it that way. He's never invited me back 'cause he knows I'll never come into his bedroom. I have to invite him into my bedroom." Explaining that Bill also thinks their arrangement “makes sex better,” she noted, “I like it ‘cause it’s a short thing.” Despite the space Barbara imposes on her marriage, though, she is quick to share how much she loves spending time with Bill. "My idea of a special night with my husband is a good game of Scrabble,” she said. “He'll often say to me S or S, and I'll say, 'Scrabble,' 'cause the first S means sex, and I say, 'No, Scrabble.' I love beating him at Scrabble, and he loves beating me at Scrabble.” “That's a great night,” she added. “That and a glass of wine for me makes a great night. Because I go to my bedroom." "I really want to clarify," Chelsea said on an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in October 2023. "I want to go on the record that that is not why our relationship ended." "We did have a lot of threesomes‚ and that, while that's private it's already out there," she continued, "so I'm gonna double down on that and just say that we didn't break up because I left him for the masseuse. That didn't happen." Heidi Klum The America's Got Talent judge has something NSFW behind her closet doors—and she calls it her "sex closet." "It's a big closet. "There is nothing intimate about it," he said on an episode of Club Shay Shay in August 2024. "Nothing. So, like, it's really embarrassing." And looking back to his role in 2015's Trainwreck , he was not prepared for the kind of scenes he would be filming with costar Amy Schumer . "Amy is an angel," he continued. "She made the environment so comfortable, and then when I got the part, eventually they were like, 'Yeah, it's a sex scene and we want you to do elaborate and crazy stunt sex, and all those lines you had? We're probably not going to use them, we're just going to do this stunt sex scene.'" Shailene Woodley Despite describing herself as a "very sexual person," Shailene has shared she has some serious "beef" with porn , naming it the "junk food" of pleasure. "The way that sex is presented on the surface in this country is so fabricated," she said on the She MD podcast in September 2024, "and it’s such a performance instead of true intimacy, vulnerability and connection." "Pleasure is so important, and we just rip each other off of it because I think we don't necessarily even know what’s possible," she continued. It's not that way for everybody." Lisa Rinna After spending decades with husband Harry Hamlin , Lisa got candid about how aging has affected their sex lives. "I do think that desire levels change for a man," the actress told Cosmopolitan in January 2024. "That's just the natural evolution of life. So it's figuring out how to coexist without taking that personally as a woman. I think that it's almost more about companionship and about creating space for the ebb and flow of sexuality." "We really have great sex together, and we always have," she continued. "It's just that maybe it doesn't happen quite as often as it did when you're in your 30s and in your 20s, I would say. And I think that's normal." Zoe Saldaña & Marco Perego-Saldaña Zoe and her husband Marco have created a code word to talk about sex around their kids. "And we're like, 'No, we're not going to do that.'"GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Defending the run has been one of the Green Bay Packers’ weaknesses over the last several years. Not so much lately, though. Green Bay limited San Francisco to 16 carries for 44 yards in a 38-10 rout of the 49ers on Nov. 24, with two-time All-Pro Christian McCaffrey gaining 31 yards on 11 attempts. Four nights later, the Packers beat Miami 30-17 by holding the Dolphins to 39 yards on 14 carries. It was the first time since 1995 — and only the second time since 1950 — that the Packers had allowed fewer than 45 yards rushing in back-to-back games within the same season. “I think we’re playing harder and harder each week,” first-year defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley said. “And that’s how you play good defense.” That defense needs to be at its best Thursday as the Packers (9-3) close a stretch of three games in 12 days by visiting the NFC North-leading Detroit Lions (12-1), who have the NFL’s highest-scoring offense thanks in part to a rushing attack featuring the speedy Jahmyr Gibbs and the physical David Montgomery. “Gibbs is a great running back,” defensive lineman Kenny Clark said. “I really think the offense really starts with him, honestly. He can do everything — receive, in-and-out runner, can do stretch, duo plays. We’ve got to have all hands on deck with Gibbs. And then Montgomery, he’s a great complement to him. He can do everything, also.” The Lions were the first team since the 1975 Miami Dolphins to rush for at least 100 yards and a touchdown in each of their first 11 games. The streak ended on Thanksgiving when the Lions rushed for 194 yards but didn’t have a touchdown on the ground in a 23-20 victory over the Chicago Bears. Green Bay outrushed Detroit 138-124 in the Packers’ 24-14 loss to the Lions on Nov. 3 at Lambeau Field. Montgomery rushed for 73 yards while Gibbs ran for 65 yards and a touchdown. Gibbs has 973 yards this season, which ranks fourth in the NFL. Montgomery ran for a combined 192 yards and four touchdowns in the Lions’ two games against the Packers last season. Green Bay’s run defense has come a long way since. The Packers have allowed 106.6 yards rushing per game this season, which ranks eighth in the league. The Packers haven’t closed a season in the top 10 in run defense since 2016 and have finished outside the top 20 in four of the last six years, including 26th in 2022 and 28th in 2023. “I think Haf’s doing a good job of mixing up the fronts and some of the coverages, but really it’s ultimately about tackling, swarming, getting many hats to the football,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. “And our guys have really embraced that style of play.” The Packers are yielding 4.2 yards per carry to rank seventh in the league after finishing 22nd or worst in that category each of the last three seasons. They haven’t closed a season ranked in the top 10 in yards allowed per carry since 2017. Hafley says the improvement starts up front. “The interior part of our D-line has done such a good job these last few games,” Hafley said. “They really have. They’re hard to block. They’re staying in their gaps. They’re tearing off of blocks, and it’s the same thing with those defensive ends. They’re setting edges, they’re forcing the ball back inside, they’re getting off blocks and then we’re tackling and we’re running to the ball and there’s multiple people to the ball. “And when you turn on our tape right now and when you freeze it, you see that. You see a lot of guys around the football. And then you’re not afraid, right? Like if I have an open-field tackle and I know eight other guys are coming, I’m going to take my shot because I know if I miss, it’s going to be, ‘Bang, bang, bang,’ we’ve got three or four other guys there, and we’re starting to play faster.” Green Bay's defense has the Lions’ attention. “They’ve been playing well,” Detroit coach Dan Campbell said. “I mean, they have, really, all season, and nothing has changed.” AP Sports Writer Larry Lage contributed to this report. Patrica Brown Peckham, 90, was born in Blantyre, Lanarkshire County, Scotland, on Friday, November 9, 1934 to William and Annie Brown. She was of Lithuanian (surname Mayuskas) and Irish (surname Murphy) decent. She was predeceased by her husband of nearly 20 years, Jim Peckham, her parents and her beloved siblings Billy (and wife May), and Eileen (and husband Jimmy) of Cambuslang and Bothwell, respectively. Patsy, as she was known to her family, was a stunningly beautiful woman, and was both a print and runway model in London, England before marriage to her first husband in Hong Kong, China, where her daughter was born. She gave up the glamor of modeling and world travel to be a wife and mother, and was dedicated to her adopted United States on arriving in Dallas, Texas in the late 1950s. On moving to Argyle in the early 1970’s with her new husband, Jim Peckham, she became very active in the community, serving as President of the Republican Women’s Club and on the Denton County Historical Commission where she was instrumental in the contracting for and building of the All-War Veteran’s Memorial on the Courthouse Square in Denton. She was a prolific letter-to-the-editor writer and had hundreds of them published in the Denton Record-Chronicle and Dallas Morning News. She was stunned to hear that her letters were part of the discussion in a political science course at NTSU. As a British Subject, she had to decline to act as a poll worker in a local election and was embarrassed to tell anyone why, so in 1987 she worked to become an American Citizen, an accomplishment that was one of her greatest sources of pride. She was sharp and politically opinionated to the last - watching and commenting on daily events - finding community with those who agreed with her or would engage her in debate. She was most proud however of her children, Pam Riley of Orange, Charles Peckham (Veronica) of Houston, and Jamie Peckham of Aubrey. Her stepson and his wife, Sam and Diane Peckham, were very kind to her and she was most appreciative of them. Her grandchildren are Heather Swartz, Charles Henry Peckham, Kincaid Peckham, and Katheleen Peckham. She also has three great-grandchildren, Korban and Geoffrey Swartz and Peyton Kristian Vaughn. Special thanks to her neighbors, Susan and Garry O’Neal, whose care and kindness in her last days made her transition peaceful. Thanks too to Michelle and other attentive staff of Concho Hearts of Pilot Point whose care and compassion was beyond words. As a Roman Catholic, thank you to the clergy and staff of St. Mark’s of Argyle for providing last rites. There will be a memorial remembrance in Blantyre, Scotland when her ashes are spread at her parents’ resting place.Trump offers a public show of support for Pete Hegseth, his embattled nominee to lead the Pentagon
HUMBOLDT, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee man was convicted Thursday of killing two men and wounding a third in a shooting at a high school basketball game three years ago. Jadon Hardiman, 21, was found guilty in Gibson County of charges including second-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons offenses, district attorney Frederick Agee said in a statement. He faces up to 76 years in prison at sentencing in April. Hardiman, of Jackson, attended a basketball game between Humboldt and North Side high schools on Nov. 30, 2021. Then 18, Hardiman entered the Humboldt gymnasium's crowded concession area and pulled a semi-automatic .40 caliber handgun, prosecutors said. He fired three shots at Justin Pankey, a 21-year-old former Humboldt basketball player. Pankey was hit one time and died within seconds, Agee said. A second bullet hit Xavier Clifton, a former North Side student and basketball player, who was standing in the concession line. Clifton was shot in the neck and paralyzed. He died in March 2022. A third shot struck another man in the back of the head. He survived. “Many people were placed in fear of imminent bodily injury by Hardiman’s shooting, as shown by video footage of their fleeing into the gym, into bathrooms, and other areas of the school,” Agee said. Hardiman ran away and drove to Jackson, disposing of the murder weapon along the way, the district attorney said. The U.S. Marshals Service contacted his family, and he was arrested the next day. Agee said the shooting "frightened every adult, student, and child present, who were only there to support their team and enjoy a good game.” Hardiman's lawyer did not immediately return a call seeking comment.HUMBOLDT, Tenn.
