Jason Krasley left his job with the Allentown Police Department in Pennsylvania in 2021 and was hired by the Denver-based SafeSport center to look into sensitive cases involving sex abuse and harassment. The center said it conducts multiple interviews and a “comprehensive background check” of potential employees. The center said it was looking into cases Krasley handled to make sure they were dealt with appropriately. Jim Larrañaga steps down at Miami, Bill Courtney takes over to finish season CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Jim Larrañaga has stepped down as Miami’s men’s basketball coach effective immediately. Larrañaga will be replaced by associate head coach Bill Courtney — one of Larrañaga’s best friends for the past three decades or so — for the remainder of the season. The now-former coach says he loves the university but believes it's the right time to step away. Larrañaga says "I’ve tried every which way to keep this going.” Larrañaga joins a long line of prominent college basketball coaches who have left their jobs in recent years citing the changes in the game and the challenge of coaching in the name, image and likeness era. Cowboys shutting down CeeDee Lamb with 2 games to go over receiver's shoulder issue FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys are shutting down CeeDee Lamb with two games remaining after their 2023 All-Pro receiver spent the second half of the season dealing with a sprained right shoulder. The team says additional exams revealed enough damage to keep Lamb off the field Sunday at Philadelphia and in the final game at home against Washington. The team says surgery isn't expected to be required. Dallas was eliminated from playoff contention a few hours before last weekend’s 26-24 victory over Tampa Bay. The Baltimore Ravens’ 31-2 victory over the Houston Texans averaged 24.3 million while Kansas City’s 29-10 win at Pittsburgh averaged 24.1 according to early viewer figures released by Nielsen on Thursday. Nielsen also said there were 65 million U.S. viewers who tuned in for at least one minute of one of the two games. The NBA’s five-game slate averaged about 5.25 million viewers per game across ABC, ESPN and its platforms, according to the league and Nielsen. Pat Riley says the Miami Heat will not trade Jimmy Butler ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — If Jimmy Butler wants a trade, the Miami Heat have no plans to make him happy. Heat President Pat Riley — in a rare move — spoke out to address rumors Thursday, saying the team has no plans to trade Butler. It’s a clear sign that, if necessary, the team will be willing to let Butler leave as a free agent and get nothing in return. Riley says in a release distributed by the team "we usually don’t comment on rumors, but all this speculation has become a distraction to the team and is not fair to the players and coaches.” Penn State offensive coordinator Kotelnicki's creativity has the Nittany Lions humming in the CFP Penn State's offense is thriving under first-year offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki. Haaland penalty failure and Fernandes red card pile on woes for City and United in Premier League Erling Haaland’s failure from the penalty spot and Bruno Fernandes’ latest red card have compounded the woes of Manchester City and Manchester United on another tough day for the two Premier League giants. City dropped more points in its improbably poor run of form by drawing 1-1 at home to Everton. Haaland had a spot kick saved by England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. The defending champions have only won one of its last 13 games in all competitions. City is languishing in seventh place while United is 14th after a 2-0 loss at Wolverhampton. Fernandes was sent off in the 47th. First-place Liverpool beat Leicester 3-1 in foggy conditions at Anfield and leads by seven points. Simona Halep withdraws from Australian Open qualifying because of knee and shoulder pain MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep has pulled out of Australian Open qualifying and a tuneup tournament in Auckland, New Zealand, because of pain in her knee and shoulder. At least 65 million tune in for Netflix NFL Christmas Day games. NBA holiday ratings also skyrocket

Predicting Rams final three games after huge win in Week 15 | Sporting NewsS ides at Christmas so often flounder in the chaos that comes with tradition. “Turkey with all the trimmings” means you have to have roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips, sprouts, stuffing and pigs in blankets as a minimum, and they all end up being deeply average. I could go on and on about why I don’t cook turkey in my house, but the thought of doing a big “set-piece” meal on C-day is definitely a big reason. Truthfully, it is hard to cook that many things well at the same time; home kitchens aren’t made for it, and neither are we, the cooks. So give yourself a break and choose two or three knockout sides. Aim for a range of textures – one crisp, one creamy, one juicy – and methods (you don’t have to roast everything) , and you won’t go back to boring again. Sherry-braised parsnips with chorizo Parsnips are so often confined to the realms of roasting but, like every other starchy root, they have a lot more to offer. Their toffee sweetness is their strength, so it’s a good idea to pair them with deeply savoury things such as dry sherry and chorizo. Ovens are already at breaking point on Christmas Day, so it’s nice to have a stove-top option, too. Prep 15 min Cook 50 min Serves 6 225g good-quality chorizo , sliced 2 shallots , peeled and diced 50g unsalted butter 3 garlic cloves , peeled and sliced 3 sprigs rosemary , leaves picked and finely chopped 800g parsnips , peeled and cut into even-sized chunks 300ml dry sherry 350ml hot chicken stock Salt and black pepper Zest of 1⁄2 lemon 1-2 tbsp sherry vinegar 1 handful flat-leaf parsley leaves , roughly chopped Put the chorizo in a cold, large, wide casserole pan with a lid, and as you bring it up to a medium heat, it will release its fat. Once sizzling, cook the chorizo for about three minutes a side, until just crisp and browned, then remove and set aside, keeping the fat in the pan. Add the shallots and butter, and fry for about five minutes, until translucent. Add the garlic and rosemary, cook for a minute, then add the parsnips and fry for a couple of minutes, turning them often and making sure they are evenly coated. Pour in the sherry, bring to a simmer and reduce by half. Add the stock, return the chorizo to the pan and season generously. The parsnips will not be completely covered in the braising liquid, and that’s fine. Cover with a lid, turn the heat down low and simmer for 20-25 minutes, turning the parsnips a few times. (Their thin, pointy ends might soften quicker than the other pieces, so check and lift out if they are done.) Take off the lid for the final five minutes of cooking. When the parsnips are knife tender, turn off the heat, check the seasoning and stir in the lemon zest and a couple of glugs of sherry vinegar. Pile the parsnips and chorizo on a platter, stir the chopped parsley into the sauce and drizzle all over. Make ahead Do this up to two days ahead, but don’t add the vinegar and herbs until you have reheated the parsnips and are about to serve. Swaps Waxy potatoes, celeriac, swede or turnip would all work beautifully instead of parsnips. To make this vegetarian, leave out the chorizo and add a couple of tablespoons of olive oil and a teaspoon of smoked paprika with the garlic, and switch the chicken stock for veg stock. Roast potatoes with chilli, basil and garlic Everyone says it, but I don’t care: my mum makes the best roast potatoes. I learned from her the cornerstones of my roast potato philosophy, which are: fully boil, not parboil; lots of salt and lots of oil; and they take as long as they take – you work for the potatoes, the potatoes don’t work for you. Roasties are not an exact science – ovens behave differently, and have cold and hot spots, potatoes have different sugar contents and cook at different rates, and some people like crunchy small bits, while others like a crunchy-fluffy hybrid. As a rough guide, though, they should take about an hour and 20 minutes in the oven, so long as nothing else is going in and out. Prep 15 min Cook 2 hr Serves 6 2kg maris piper (or yukon gold) potatoes , peeled and cut into large, even-sized chunks 600ml vegetable oil Flaky sea salt 20g fresh basil leaves , shredded 2 garlic cloves , peeled and very finely chopped 2 red chillies , very finely diced Put the potatoes in a large pan and cover with cold water. Salt the water generously – it should be salty like soup – bring to a boil, then simmer over a medium heat for 20 minutes, or until the thickest potatoes are tender. Some will start to crumble, but that’s OK. Drain, gently shake in the colander to fluff up the edges, then transfer to a couple of trays and leave to cool and steam-dry completely. Heat the oven to 230C (210C fan)/450F/gas 8). Divide the oil between two or three large, deep roasting trays and heat in the oven for 10-15 minutes, until shimmering. Working with one tray at a time, carefully lay some of the cooled potatoes in the hot oil, turn to coat, sprinkle with salt, then pop back in the oven and repeat with the remaining tray(s) and potatoes; don’t overcrowd the potatoes, or they will steam rather than roast. After 20 minutes, again working with one tray at a time, turn over the potatoes. Repeat every 20 minutes, lifting out any potatoes that are deep golden and cooked to your liking as you do so. Drain the cooked roasties on kitchen paper, then transfer to a platter. Scatter over the basil, garlic and chilli while the potatoes are still hot, toss and serve. Make ahead Boil and cool the potatoes up to 24 hours ahead, and store uncovered in the fridge so they dry out and don’t sweat. You can also roast them up to six hours before dinner and reheat – they hold well. Swaps Leave out the dressing, or switch the basil for parsley and the chilli for lemon zest, for a more mellow take. Cavolo nero, leek and brussels sprout gratin I am not a huge brussels sprouts gal, but in this gratin with fragrant leeks, soft cavolo nero and plenty of cheese and cream, they are pretty irresistible. I also love the idea of bunging three types of vegetables into one dish – it follows that weird Christmas rule of having loads of different vegetable sides, but requires a lot less work and oven space. Prep 15 min Cook 1 hr 2 0 min Rest 10 min Serves 6 1 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp butter 450g leeks (about 3 medium ones), washed, trimmed and thinly sliced 400g brussels sprouts , hard ends trimmed and any dark/damaged leaves removed, the rest finely shredded 300g cavolo nero , stems removed and discarded, leaves roughly chopped 900ml double cream 70g parmesan , finely grated Nutmeg 1 tsp salt 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper 2 tbsp dijon mustard 1 bunch fresh tarragon , leaves stripped and chopped 2 garlic cloves , peeled and grated Put the oil and butter in a large saucepan on a medium heat. Add the leeks, saute for about five minutes to soften, then add the sprouts and cavolo nero, and stir in a tablespoon of water. Cover the pan and leave to cook, stirring every so often, for 10 minutes, until the veg are soft. Meanwhile, heat the oven to 200C (180C fan)/390F/gas 6. Mix the cream with half the parmesan, then add a good grating of nutmeg, the salt, pepper, mustard, tarragon and garlic. Drain any excess liquid from the vegetables, then spoon them into a baking dish – I use a large, round, cast-iron one. Pour the cream mixture over the veg in batches, stirring slightly and letting it settle and disperse evenly as you do so. Sprinkle the remaining parmesan on top, cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes,. Lift off the foil, cook for another 20 minutes, then remove and leave to rest for 10 minutes before serving. Make ahead Assemble and keep this in the fridge for up to two days. Bring to room temperature before baking. Cook the gratin up to 24 hours before and reheat, covered, at 200C (180C fan)/390F/gas 6 for 30-40 minutes. Swaps Leave out any of the vegetables and make up their weight with more of the others. I love making this with savoy cabbage and slow-cooked onions, too. Rosie Mackean’s book, Good Time Cooking: Show-Stopping Menus for Easy Entertaining, is published by Pavilion Books at £26. And if you’re not quite on track, don’t sweat it — the experts we spoke to offered actionable tips to help you close the gap. You might have a general idea of how much money you need to save for retirement . A few quick calculations can give you an estimate, but to truly appreciate where you stand, you’ll need to dive into the numbers. Here’s how to get started. A good rule of thumb to estimate your retirement savings goal is the Rule of 25 . Simply multiply your desired annual retirement income by 25. The result is roughly how much you’ll need to save before hitting retirement. For example, if you plan to spend $50,000 a year, you’ll need about $1.25 million to make it a reality. The Rule of 25 is based on the idea that withdrawing 4% annually from your retirement savings should last you about 30 years. While it’s not an exact science by any means — health care costs and lifestyle changes can skew the numbers, for example — the Rule of 25 can be a good starting point to figure out how much you need to save. Fidelity Investments, a behemoth in the retirement planning space, offers savings guidelines to help you determine if you’re on track . —By age 30: Save 1x your annual salary —By age 40: Save 3x your annual salary —By age 50: Save 6x your annual salary —By age 60: Save 8x your annual salary —By age 67: Save 10x your annual salary For example, if you earn $60,000 annually, you should aim for $600,000 in savings by age 67. But like the Rule of 25, Fidelity’s guidelines offer a 10,000-foot look at retirement goals, and they’re not customized to your situation. Maybe you earned a low salary in your 20s, but you’re working hard in your 30s to make up for it. Use these estimates as a benchmark — but don’t get discouraged if you’re lagging behind. Now it’s time to zoom in a little. To get a clearer snapshot of your progress, use an online retirement calculator. These tools factor in your age, current savings, income and lifestyle goals to estimate whether you’re on track. You’ll get a more refined estimate without crunching the numbers yourself. Bankrate’s retirement calculator even lets you input different rates of return on your investments and accounts for estimated annual salary increases. Having a general savings goal is nice, but to avoid falling short in retirement, you’ll need more than a ballpark figure. Experts recommend creating a retirement budget to get an up-close-and-personal look at how much you’ll really need once you leave the workforce. First, estimate how much you’ll spend per month in retirement. While some costs will increase, like health care, others will likely decrease, like dining out and commuting. “Estimating expenses can be challenging for some people, so as a starting point, I often use your net take-home pay,” says Jeff DeLarme, a certified financial planner and president of DeLarme Wealth Management. For example, if you receive a direct deposit of $2,500 every two weeks from work, use $5,000 as your estimated monthly spending in retirement. “Assuming this was enough to pay the bills while working, we can use $5,000 a month as a starting budget to plan for,” says DeLarme. Next, map out your sources of income in retirement. Social Security is the largest income stream for most retirees, but don’t neglect other inflows, such as: —Workplace retirement accounts, like 401(k)s —Personal retirement accounts, like a traditional or Roth IRA —Pensions —Annuities —Selling your home or business —Rental income —Inheritance “If there’s a gap between your expected expenses and income, you’ll have a good idea of how much you need to save,” says Mike Hunsberger, a certified financial planner and owner of Next Mission Financial Planning. From there, you can adjust your savings and investment strategy accordingly. For something as important (and complex) as retirement planning, it pays to speak with a professional. Financial advisers can analyze your savings, investments and retirement goals to create a personalized plan. Advisers use special planning software that account for more variables than an online calculator, giving you a much more precise, granular look at your financial life in retirement. Many financial advisers can also help you optimize your tax strategy, which can potentially save you thousands of dollars over time. Make sure the adviser you hire is a fiduciary , meaning they’re legally obligated to prioritize your interests over their own. A fiduciary won’t push investments to earn a commission or recommend products that aren’t aligned with your needs. A certified financial planner is one of the most well-recognized designations for fiduciaries. You can use Bankrate’s adviser matching tool to find a certified financial planner in your area in minutes. Maybe you did the math and realized you’re not quite where you need to be. Don’t panic if you’re behind schedule. Here are five strategies experts recommend to help you catch up on your retirement savings . Cutting expenses now frees up more cash to invest in your retirement accounts. Evaluate your budget and identify areas where you can cut costs, like dining out, streaming subscriptions or shopping. Don’t rule out bigger lifestyle changes either, especially if retirement is rapidly approaching. Housing is the biggest monthly expense for most people. Getting creative here can help amplify the amount you can sock away, says Joseph Boughan, a certified financial planner and managing member at Parkmount Financial Partners. It can also reduce your expenses in retirement, so you may not need to save as much as before. “Downsizing can be a great way to cut expenses,” says Boughan. “This can even free up cash if you don’t end up needing all that money for a new home.” Moving somewhere with lower property taxes or income taxes can also help bring your retirement plan back in line. And if you’re a renter, making tough short-term decisions, like taking on a roommate or moving to a lower cost-of-living area, can free up hundreds of dollars a month for your retirement. “Everyone’s plan is unique, so exploring all the options is important,” Boughan says. Joe Conroy, a certified financial planner and owner of Harford Retirement Planners, recommends taking a “retirement test drive” as you near your target date. “Start to live on what income you think you can afford in retirement and stash all the extra income into savings and investments,” says Conroy. “If you can make it through each month, you’re ready for retirement. If you run short, then adjust your plan accordingly.” Working a little longer can be a game-changer for your retirement nest egg. Not only does it give you more time to save, it also gives your investments room to grow. “Working longer or even just part time for a few years early in retirement is one of the best ways to reduce the amount of money you need to save,” says Hunsberger. Postponing retirement can also boost your Social Security benefits . “You can claim as early as 62, but your benefits will be reduced significantly,” says Hunsberger. Meanwhile, each year you delay claiming Social Security benefits beyond your full retirement age , your monthly check will increase by 8%, though this benefit maxes out at age 70. So waiting can really pay off. It may seem obvious, but if you’re behind on retirement savings, you’ll need to boost your contributions as much as possible. Here are a few ways to make saving for retirement easier: —Increase your contribution rate: Allocate a larger portion of your paycheck to a workplace retirement plan. Even bumping up your contributions by 1% or 2% can make a huge difference down the road. —Take advantage of your employer match: Don’t leave free money on the table. Many employers will chip in between 3 and 5% depending on your plan, so make sure you’re contributing enough to take advantage of the benefit. —Use “unexpected” money to catch up: If you get a raise or bonus at work, funnel part of it directly into your 401(k). And if you get a refund at tax time, siphon some of it off to beef up your IRA. If you’ve been investing in low-risk, low-return investments, you may not be keeping up with inflation, let alone growing your nest egg. Reallocating part of your portfolio to stocks or low-cost growth exchange-traded funds (ETFs) is one way to get your money working harder. Higher-risk investments like stocks carry more volatility but also offer higher potential returns. Work with a financial adviser or use a robo-adviser to strike the right balance between growth and your personal risk tolerance. Contribution limits for 401(k) plans and IRAs are higher for people over 50. For 2025, employees aged 50 and up who participate in most 401(k) plans or the federal government’s Thrift Savings Plan can save up to $31,000 annually, including a $7,500 catch-up contribution . But thanks to SECURE 2.0 , a sweeping retirement law, a new higher catch-up contribution limit of $11,250 applies for employees ages 60 to 63. So, if you’re in this age group, you can squirrel away a whopping $34,750 a year during the final stretch of your career. Of course, you’ll need a big salary (think six figures) in order to take full advantage of such massive contribution limits. But if you can afford it, these catch-up allowances can put your plan back on track, especially if you struggled to save much early in your career. There’s no GPS to gauge your progress on the road to retirement. If you’ve veered off course or aren’t sure where to start, begin by getting a quick estimate of how much you’ll need before mapping out a retirement budget. And if you’re behind, don’t panic — adjusting your spending, boosting your contributions and speaking with a financial adviser can help you catch up. ©2024 Bankrate.com. The five “EU Green Deal” projects for airports – Stargate, OLGA and TULIPS – and ports – PIONEERS, Magpie – gathered in the Skyhall at Brussels Airport and in the Queen Elisabeth Hall in Antwerp for the Seas to Skies Conference. This two-day event, held on December 3rd and 4th, 2024, brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators to exchange experiences on how to accelerate the green transition of Europe’s ports and airports. The Sea to Skies Conference showcased the collective efforts of the five EU Green Deal projects, demonstrating how they are working together to drive innovation and sustainable practices. These projects are co-funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency. By fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing, Seas to Skies has empowered participants to commonly address the pressing challenges facing the two sectors and propose unified solutions not only within the consortium for each individual project, but also across the projects and sectors. The projects presented at the conference highlighted the tangible benefits of a sustainable approach. These pioneering initiatives are already making a significant impact by reducing emissions, enhancing energy efficiency, and improving the overall environmental performance of ports and airports. Speaking on the sidelines of the conference, Herald Ruijters, Deputy Director-General at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport, remarked: “Airports and ports are vital hubs for passengers and freight across our trans-European transport network. Through Horizon 2020, we are contributing €125 million to five innovative projects aimed at accelerating the deployment of sustainable fuels and electromobility in aviation and shipping. These projects will help reduce transport emissions and improve air quality at 12 airports and 8 ports across 13 Member States.” “These five projects are leading the way in developing sustainable solutions for the entire ecosystems of ports and airports. The scale of EU funding allocated to the projects demonstrates our commitment to the low-carbon and digital transport transition. We are proud today to see the achievements so far, and the successful collaboration between the project partners, researchers, industry, and SMEs. This will prove inspirational for other ports and airports across Europe and reap benefits for businesses and society at large,” said Paloma Aba Garrote, Director, European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). The MAGPIE consortium commented: “It is important for there to be an exchange of knowledge and lessons learned between the European Green Deal projects, as this not only helps MAGPIE to disseminate its solutions but also allows us to adapt them based on external input. It also encourages us to consider the scalability and reproducibility of our demonstrators in different contexts. This exchange, the Seas to Skies Conference, also allowed us to see that our visions for the projects and especially for European ports align well. Lastly, it allows us to realize that we are approaching the energy transition in ports and in its surrounding transports in a very holistic manner, considering non-technological solutions and monitoring various aspects including social acceptance as well as focusing on the technological solutions. The Port of Rotterdam as MAGPIE project coordinator is looking forward, together with the project partners, to the next two years in which demonstrations will be completed.” “After 3 years of extensive work, OLGA project has already progressed many tasks, among the around 30 tasks carried out in the project, aiming to improve the environmental performance at airports in a holistic manner. These innovations are intended for local use and scalable deployment across European airports and beyond. With a focus on replicating these results across Europe, such conferences fostering collaboration among the five H2020 Green Airports and Green Ports projects are proving vital to exchanging best practices and addressing challenges early, ensuring a unified approach to greener aviation. The discussions held over these two days confirm our motivation to successfully complete the tasks ongoing in the remaining two years”, expressed the OLGA consortium after the event. Inge De Wolf, Project Coordinator for PIONEERS stated: “The support from the European Commission for the H2020-funded PIONEERS project is pivotal in advancing our shared commitment to achieving net zero emissions as stated by the European Green Deal. Innovation is at the heart of our sustainable transition, and through collaborative efforts and dedicated funding, we can pioneer and ensure a sustainable future for our ports, our industry, and future generations. I am proud to announce that the PIONEERS consortium successfully implemented 13 demo pilots during the last year in the ports of Antwerp-Bruges, Barcelona, Constanta and Venlo, marking significant strides in our journey towards reducing global greenhouse gas emissions in port ecosystems.” “From Stargate, we were very happy to co-organise this Seas to Skies conference and to host our fellow Green Deal projects for the aviation and maritime sectors at Brussels Airport’s Skyhall,” explained Charlotte Verreydt, Project Manager of Stargate at Brussels Airport. “After realising various projects and demonstrations in the past 3 years, such as electrification of ground handling equipment, testing a taxibot and automated shuttle and hydrogen solutions, this conference is a perfect place to exchange on our results, learnings, innovations and challenges ahead. By fostering collaboration, dissemination and exchanges with CINEA, and the other projects, I am convinced we will make a greater impact and accelerate the industry’s transition to become more sustainable. I was personally pleased to see that we are all aligned on the same objectives and with an equivalent drive to have a concrete impact and ensure our legacy. This is key to our success.” Fokko Kroesen, Project Coordinator for TULIPS added: “After two years, the TULIPS project has successfully contributed to shaping the energy transition necessary to balance energy supply and demand at our lighthouse airport. Additionally, we have extended these efforts to regional airports, addressing unique challenges from varied energy infrastructures. Our demonstrations of hydrogen equipment and liquid hydrogen storage solutions have been pivotal in showcasing technologies needed to achieve emission reduction goals. These solutions are essential components of the broader portfolio of measures required to meet these targets. The Seas to Skies Conference, involving five collaborative projects, highlighted significant dissemination and partnership development progress. The crosslinks between initiatives underscore the potential for enhanced synergy, laying a promising foundation to scale solutions during the remaining project period.” Source: Port of Antwerp-Bruges

US sex-abuse watchdog fires investigator after learning of his arrest for stealing drug money DENVER (AP) — The U.S. Center for SafeSport abruptly fired one of its investigators last month after learning he’d been arrested for stealing money confiscated after a drug bust he was part of during his previous job as a police officer. At least 65 million tune in for Netflix NFL Christmas Day games. NBA holiday ratings also skyrocket LeBron James is going to have to make room for the NFL. Wednesday’s doubleheader on Netflix set records as the most-streamed NFL games in U.S. history, with numbers nearly five times more than the NBA. The Nittany Lions are one of a handful of Power Four schools averaging 200 yards per game rushing and receiving heading into their College Football Playoff quarterfinal against Boise State. Penn State has one of the most unique offensive weapons in the country in tight end Tyler Warren. Warren has 92 receptions this season and has become a threat out of the backfield, rushing for 197 yards and two touchdowns. Organizers say two sailors have died in Sydney to Hobart yacht race amid wild weather conditions SYDNEY (AP) — Organizers said that two Sydney to Hobart sailors have died at sea amid wild weather conditions that forced line honors favorite Master Lock Comanche to withdraw among mass retirements. The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, which administers the yacht race, has said that one sailor each on entrants Flying Fish Arctos and Bowline were killed after being struck by the boom, a large horizontal pole at the bottom of the sail. The race will continue as the fleet continues its passage to Constitution Dock in Hobart, with the first boats expected to arrive later on Friday or early Saturday morning. Thursday's news represents the latest interruption of her comeback from a drug suspension. Halep posted on social media that she was feeling poorly after participating in an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi. The 33-year-old Romanian said she is planning to next enter the Transylvania Open in her home country, where play begins Feb. 3. Halep was granted a wild-card entry for qualifying in the Australian Open last week. Mahomes throws 3 TDs as Chiefs clinch AFC's top seed by breezing past the skidding Steelers 29-10 PITTSBURGH (AP) — Patrick Mahomes passed for 320 yards and three touchdowns and the Kansas City Chiefs locked up the top seed in the AFC for the fourth time in seven seasons with a 29-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The two-time defending Super Bowl champions raced to an early 13-point lead and were never really threatened by the Steelers (10-6). Pittsburgh has dropped three straight to see its chances of capturing the AFC North take another hit. Travis Kelce caught eight passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. Kelce also became the third tight end in NFL history to reach 1,000 receptions, joining Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten.PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts remained in the NFL's concussion protocol on Monday, limiting his ability to practice this week for the Philadelphia Eagles and casting doubt on his availability for Sunday's game against Dallas. If Hurts can't play, the Eagles would turn to backup Kenny Pickett — who suffered a rib injury and couldn't protect a big lead in a 36-33 loss to Washington — with third-stringer Tanner McKee on deck. The Eagles (12-3) need to win one more game over the final two to clinch an NFC East title and one of the conference's top two seeds. Coach Nick Sirianni gave no additional health update on Hurts but did say the QB who led the Eagles to 10 straight wins before he was forced out with the head injury wouldn't need much time this week to get ready against the Cowboys, if he was cleared. “Jalen knows how to prepare,” Sirianni said. “He knows how to get himself ready. He's a true pro." The Eagles are 9 1/2-point favorites over the division rival Cowboys (7-8), per BetMGM Sportsbook. Sirianni said the Eagles would lean on the medical staff on a daily basis to know where Hurts — who threw two touchdown passes and ran for a pair of scores in the first meeting against Dallas in November — was in his recovery from the head injury. Hurts was ruled out early at Washington after his head slammed against the ground on one run and he was hit in the helmet by Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu at the end of another. “He's always done a good job of protecting himself both as a passer and a runner,” Sirianni said. “Any time you lose one of your best players, you wish they'd do something else or not take that hit." Hurts shook off a sluggish start over the first four games and has thrown 18 touchdowns against just five interceptions to turn the Eagles into Super Bowl contenders. “Every time there's a player out,” Sirianni said, “there's an adjustment to be made.” What’s working Saquon Barkley and the running game. Barkley was held to 41 yards after the first quarter but 150 yards is 150 yards and he still has a shot at NFL history. Barkley leads the NFL with 1,838 yards rushing and is 268 yards away from passing Eric Dickerson and his 2,105 yards for the Los Angeles Rams in 1984 for the season mark. Barkley is 162 yards shy of becoming the ninth player in NFL history with 2,000 yards rushing in a season. What needs help Backup QB. Pickett was 14 of 24 for 143 yards in relief, throwing a touchdown pass to A.J. Brown and an interception. Pickett played his first meaningful football in a year. The Eagles use McKee as the emergency QB, but the sixth-round pick in the 2023 draft could be in the mix if Hurts sat out against Dallas. Pickett is from New Jersey and said when he was acquired from Pittsburgh that he had “great memories” of going to games at Lincoln Financial Field with his dad and grandfather since he was 5. The chance to run out of the home team tunnel — which he could get Sunday if he's the starting QB — left him absolutely delighted. Pickett, a first-round pick out of Pitt in 2022, went 14-10 as a starter for the Steelers. “I was impressed by Pickett, honestly," Washington coach Dan Quinn said Monday. "I thought he threw the ball with good accuracy to the right spots. He’s a nice athlete (who can) move, so I can see why they would want him in that system. I thought he got outside and had good scramble ability. Wasn’t surprised they didn’t run the sneaks to go through that.” Stock up Zack Baun. The linebacker barely caused a ripple on the transactions wire in March but has been arguably the MVP of the defense. He forced a fumble in the third quarter that set up a score, one of five turnovers for the Eagles. He also had two tackles for losses. Stock down The No. 1 seed. The Eagles all but cost themselves a shot at the top spot in the NFC and a bye with the late-game collapse in Washington. The Eagles will clinch the division with a victory over the Cowboys or Giants and most likely will finish with the No. 2 seed. They are one game behind both the Detroit Lions (13-2) and the Minnesota Vikings (13-2) in the NFC standings. Eagles fans can still chant, “We're No. 1!” but it's a long shot. To clinch the No. 1 seed, the Eagles need to beat Dallas and the Giants. And the Lions need to lose their last two games against San Francisco (6-9) and Minnesota. And the Vikings needs to lose to Green Bay (10-4) and beat the Lions in Week 18. Should the status quo remain, the Eagles would host Washington in a playoff game. Injuries Beyond Hurts, edge rusher Josh Sweat left with an ankle injury and defensive tackle Jordan Davis limped off in the second quarter. ... Pickett said he had his ribs X-rayed and would undergo further testing. Sirianni had no update Monday on Pickett's condition. Key number 1,000 — Brown became the first Eagles receiver to top 1,000 yards in three straight seasons since Mike Quick from 1983-85. Next steps The Eagles can clinch the division and a home playoff game with two lightweights left on the schedule, both at home. The Eagles play Dallas on Sunday in a game bumped to a 1 p.m. kickoff and end the season against the New York Giants. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

Top 10 Best Direct-to-Consumer Brands in India 2025Adding to alarm over U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s immigration plans, his “ border czar ” told The Washington Post in an interview published Thursday that the administration plans to return to detaining migrant families with children. Tom Homan, who served as acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during Trump’s first term, said that ICE “will look to hold parents with children in ‘soft-sided’ tent structures similar to those used by U.S. border officials to handle immigration surges,” the Post summarized. “The government will not hesitate to deport parents who are in the country illegally, even if they have young U.S.-born children, he added, leaving it to those families to decide whether to exit together or be split up.” Since Trump beat Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris last month, migrant rights advocates have reiterated concerns about the Republican’s first-term policies — such as forced separation of families — and his 2024 campaign pledges, from mass deportations to attempting to end birthright citizenship , despite the guarantees of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Homan — who oversaw the so-called “zero tolerance” policy that separated thousands of migrant kids from their parents — said: “Here’s the issue... You knew you were in the country illegally and chose to have a child. So you put your family in that position.” Harris and President Joe Biden have come under fire for various immigration policies, but their administration did stop family detention — and when it was reported last year that the White House was weighing a revival of the practice, 383 groups urged the president to keep the pledge he made when he took office “to pursue just, compassionate, and humane immigration policies.” Under Biden, the government ended mass worksite immigration raids and — eventually — the “ Remain in Mexico ” policy that stopped asylum-seekers from entering the United States. Homan told the Post that the next Trump administration should bring them back. Less than a month before Trump’s inauguration, Biden is now facing pressure to “use the power of the pen to protect those seeking sanctuary from the coming deportation machine that will crush the human rights of our immigrant neighbors and those who have dreams of finding refuge here,” as Amnesty International USA executive director Paul O’Brien put it earlier this month. The Post reported that “of all the border hard-liners in the incoming administration, Homan is perhaps the most cognizant of the limits of the government’s ability to deliver on promises of mass deportation — and the potential for a political backlash.” Those hard-liners include dog-killing Republican South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Homeland Security; family separation architect Stephen Miller, the president-elect’s homeland security adviser and deputy chief of staff for policy; and Caleb Vitello, the next acting ICE director whom Miller previously tried to install at the Office of Refugee Resettlement. “We’re going to need to construct family facilities,” Homan told the newspaper. However, he also said: “We need to show the American people we can do this and not be inhumane about it... We can’t lose the faith of the American people.” Critics of the next administration have suggested that — although Trump won the Electoral College and the popular vote last month — pursuing the GOP immigration policies, including “ concentration camps ” for migrant families, will anger the public. “Decent people all over the world will hate this country... and they should,” media columnist and Brooklyn College professor Eric Alterman said on social media in response to the Post ’s reporting. Author and New York University adjunct associate professor Helio Fred Garcia said: “Trump’s next border czar previews performative cruelty. In the first term it included kidnapping of children from their parents and returning the parents to their home countries, with no record of which kids came from which parents. A crime against humanity.” Lee Gelernt, an ACLU attorney who has argued many major immigration cases, told the Post that “the incoming administration has refused to acknowledge the horrific damage it did to families and little children the first time around and seems determined to once again target families for gratuitous suffering.” “The public may have voted in the abstract for mass deportations,” he added, referring to the November election, “but I don’t think they voted for more family separation or unnecessary cruelty to children.”TheRealReal Stock Hits 52-Week High at $4.66 Amidst Strong Growth

Scotland’s last remaining greyhound racetrack should be demolished, say campaignersWhat's New Netflix's holiday thriller Carry-On has captivated audiences with its portrayal of airport security, centering on a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agent who is coerced into allowing a dangerous package onto a flight. While the film has been a major hit, becoming Netflix 's most-watched film in the U.S. in December, it takes some creative liberties with TSA protocols and airport security procedures. Newsweek reached out to Netflix by email for comment. Why It Matters Carry-On debuted on Netflix on December 15 as part of the platform's holiday season releases. The film stars Taron Egerton as Ethan Kopek, a dedicated but conflicted TSA agent. The plot follows Kopek as he navigates a high-stakes situation when a stranger coerces him into compromising airport security to save his partner. The film has quickly become a global sensation, claiming the No. 1 spot on the platform's global top 10 chart with an impressive 42 million views in its first week of release, marking the biggest opening for Netflix this year. What To Know While Carry-On captivates audiences with its thrilling plot, it takes significant creative liberties with TSA procedures and airport security operations. Jessica Mayle, a spokesperson for the TSA, highlighted some of these inaccuracies, noting the compromises that were made to produce one of the year's biggest hits. No, TSA Doesn't Play 'Contraband Bingo' The movie shows TSA officers playing "Contraband Bingo." Mayle denied this. She told Newsweek : "We have never heard about anyone playing checkpoint bingo—and certainly not with things permitted in carry-on baggage. TSA highlights unusual prohibited items on social media, but such games are not part of our operations." Opting Out of Scans Comes With Consequences The film suggests passengers can refuse scanner screenings with few consequences. Mayle clarified this: "All passengers must be screened before entering the sterile area of the airport. In the rare instances passengers refuse, they are denied access." A Single Officer Breaching Security? Unlikely A single compromised officer causes a major security breach in the movie. Mayle addressed this, explaining: "Given TSA's layered approach to security, with intelligence and risk analysis as a basis, it is unlikely the scenarios the movie presented could evade the TSA airport security apparatus at the nation's airports." Holiday Accessories and Chants: A Local Call TSA officers are depicted wearing holiday accessories and chanting during shifts. "There are no rules on holiday accessories and chants, and permitting them would be a local leadership decision," Mayle said. Student IDs at the Airport? Possible But Delayed A scene depicts a student using a student ID as identification. "In the event someone arrives at the airport without acceptable identification—whether lost, stolen or otherwise—they may still be allowed to fly," Mayle said. "The TSA officer may ask the person to complete an identity verification process, including collecting information such as name and current address to confirm their identity, though this will cause delays for the individual." Security Breaches Would Prompt Immediate Action The film portrays a security breach while the airport continues normal operations. "TSA is always operating at a high level of security, and employees are in a constant state of vigilance," Mayle said. "The agency maintains a risk-based, intelligence-driven approach that includes multiple layers of security, both seen and unseen." Despite the movie's dramatized liberties, Mayle appreciates that Carry-On captured aspects of TSA officers' dedication and teamwork while calling attention to their essential role in keeping travelers safe. "The film ultimately portrayed our front-line workforce in a good light, even if the main character did not make the best decisions initially," she said. What People Are Saying Carla Hay, film critic, on Rotten Tomatoes: " Carry-On is a preposterous but entertaining thrill ride about an airport security agent caught up in a deadly terrorist plot involving a smuggled carry-on suitcase. The movie doesn't take itself seriously and has well-cast heroes and villains." T.J. Fixman, the film's writer, to The New York Times : "We just tried to capture all the little inconveniences that just become big ones. I have actually been stuck behind someone who only brought their school identification, something we show in the movie." What Happens Next Through its social media and outreach efforts, the TSA plans to use the attention generated by the film to emphasize the importance of accurate security protocols and encourage travelers to stay informed.COSTA MESA, Calif. , Dec. 13, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Automatic, a leading fintech firm specializing in facilitating seamless connections between used independent car dealerships and lenders, today announced a strategic partnership with MeridianLink, Inc.
