Israel’s campaign has focused largely on Hezbollah’s Shi’ite Muslim heartlands, where its supporters were badly hit. A senior Lebanese official familiar with Hezbollah thinking said the group’s focus would be squarely on securing their return and rebuilding their homes: “Hezbollah is like a wounded man. DETROIT — Steve Yzerman had to do something. After watching his team get booed off home ice in the Red Wings’ final game before the Christmas break Monday night, dropping them into the NHL ’s bottom five after 34 games, it was clear patience in Detroit had run out. And Thursday, Yzerman acted accordingly, firing the team’s third-year head coach,Derek Lalonde, as well as associate coach Bob Boughner, and replacing them with veteran bench boss Todd McLellan and assistant coach Trent Yawney. Advertisement It was a move many fans had called for throughout the team’s disappointing 2024-25 season, as the Red Wings slipped from being a tiebreaker short of the playoffs last season to one of the league’s worst teams in a matter of months. They were underwhelming offensively, porous on the penalty kill and on too many nights, just plain flat. All of these are things McLellan, who has more than 1,100 games of NHL head coaching experience backing him, will be tasked with fixing — starting Friday with a home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs . But while Yzerman, the team’s general manager since 2019, has made that change, it can’t be his last. Not if McLellan is going to have a serious chance at succeeding where Lalonde could not. Because while Lalonde was hardly a perfect coach, the way the Red Wings have fallen flat this season is about much more than coaching. Lalonde is a sharp hockey mind, but at least publicly was a relatively mild-mannered communicator. It’s entirely possible, then, that a new voice and new message can light more of a fire under the Red Wings players. But if a room full of professional athletes truly needs someone else to light their fire for them, that speaks to a much bigger issue. Especially for a team that has made a point of bringing in veteran leadership over the past three offseasons — and given out some cumbersome contracts in the name of doing so. So while swapping Lalonde for McLellan may well give Detroit a spark — as it often does with coaching changes — Yzerman will simultaneously have to look long and hard at his roster and perhaps make change or two there once the NHL’s trade freeze lifts on Friday. As close as the Red Wings got to the playoffs last season, that result now looks more like a mirage year than a building-block season for this franchise. And while Detroit’s farm system still has a few important pieces working their way up the pipeline, glaring long-term questions remain. Advertisement The biggest are at forward. Detroit has long been building around top-line center Dylan Larkin , but increasingly, the crawling pace of the rebuild looks like it will mean Larkin, 28, will be into his 30s by the time the team is in serious contention. That’s not the end of the world — Yzerman didn’t win his first Stanley Cup until he was 32, and Larkin should still be a highly effective player for many more years — but it does mean the team will need a robust core of younger players around him. They have one such young star, Lucas Raymond , tracking toward a potential 80-point season this year at age 22, and another good scoring winger in Alex DeBrincat . From there, though, so much remains to be seen. Recent first-round picks Marco Kasper and Nate Danielson look like playoff-style two-way centermen who will really help the Red Wings, but both have some questions around what their ultimate NHL scoring productivity will be. The team’s 2024 first-round pick, Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, has a big-time shot in a heavy body, but he’s only 19 and has gotten off to a slower-than-hoped offensive start in the SHL. All of Kasper, Danielson and Brandsegg-Nygård look like they will become good NHL players. But to get to where the Red Wings want to go, they’ll need more star power alongside Raymond and Larkin up front. They surely will have to continue to look for that through the draft, but as they’ve seen, that process will not be quick. So while Detroit is making changes, is there a young forward they can trade for whose contributions can come sooner? Trevor Zegras in Anaheim or Dylan Cozens in Buffalo would both fit the bill as young players who have already proven they can hit 60-point offense in the NHL, but have seen their production dip of late. Such a trade could be costly, but you can’t find players as young as those two in free agency, which is largely limited to players aged 27 and older. And frankly, Detroit’s approach in that market is another area Yzerman may need to revisit in the coming months after the way their forays have played out lately. Advertisement After firing their last coach, Jeff Blashill, in 2022, Yzerman sought to give Lalonde a better roster to work with and brought in proven players such as Andrew Copp , Ben Chiarot and David Perron . Then, in 2023, he added to that with J.T. Compher , Justin Holl and Shayne Gostisbehere , and trades for DeBrincat and Jeff Petry . This summer, he signed Vladimir Tarasenko and Erik Gustafsson to multi-year deals. There were a few success stories in that mix, but the majority of those deals have not aged well and Yzerman may now have to try and get out from one (or more) moving forward. Some of that is simply the risk of operating in free agency, but the low success rate speaks to a potential need for additional voices in the player personnel and pro scouting departments, too. The Red Wings never formally replaced Mark Howe as director of pro scouting when he retired, for example. Those kind of changes and hirings may take longer, and be lower-profile, than firing a coach. But make no mistake, the roster in Detroit — and the way it was assembled — are the biggest reasons the Red Wings are where they are today. Yzerman stepped into an exceedingly difficult situation five and a half years ago. Success — let alone fast success — was never a given, no matter how much hope his arrival brought. But he’s now fired two coaches without a playoff appearance, and inevitably that puts him even more in the spotlight as general manager. His next moves are going to be more scrutinized than any to this point. The decision to move on from Lalonde had begun to feel inevitable, and doing it in-season as opposed to waiting until the summer could give Yzerman’s team a short-term boost. That seems to be the calculation. But if the Red Wings are serious about fixing their issues in a long-term sense, they can’t stop here. The NBA's five-game Christmas lineup was the league's most-watched in five years, with the games averaging about 5.25 million viewers per game across ABC, ESPN and its platforms, the league said Thursday based on Nielsen's preliminary numbers. It's an 84% rise over the NBA's Christmas numbers from 2023. The Los Angeles Lakers’ 115-113 victory over the Golden State Warriors — a game pitting Olympic teammates LeBron James and Stephen Curry — averaged 7.76 million viewers and peaked with about 8.32 million viewers toward the end of the contest, the league said. Those numbers represent the most-watched NBA regular season game in five years. “I love the NFL,” James said in his televised postgame interview Wednesday night. “But Christmas is our day.” The NBA said all five Christmas games on its schedule — San Antonio at New York in Victor Wembanyama's holiday debut, Minnesota at Dallas, Philadelphia at Boston, Denver at Phoenix and Lakers-Warriors — saw year-over-year viewership increases. Wednesday's numbers pushed NBA viewership for the season across ESPN platforms to up 4% over last season. President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to extend his signature Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, a 2017 law that revised the tax code and provided some sweet breaks to favored constituents. Many of those provisions are set to expire at the end of 2025 and, given the GOP’s control of Congress and the White House, the pressure will be on to act fast. Failure to extend the measures would mean increases for most taxpayers in 2026, and they would have no one to blame but Trump & Co. During his campaign, the president-elect teased additional giveaways, vowing to eliminate taxes on tips, which doesn’t make much sense, as well as Social Security income. Apparently, all kinds of ideas are on the table, which makes the complex job of rewriting tax law even more challenging. Throughout the 2000s, the U.S. has lived far beyond its means, as both major parties embraced deficit spending. Extending the Trump tax cuts will jack up the deficit by something like $5 trillion through fiscal 2035. Sweetening the pot with additional goodies would add still more to the tab. We send our best wishes to the much-ballyhooed Department of Government Efficiency, to be run by tech bosses Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. We’re all for eliminating waste, fraud and abuse. But given governmental instincts for self-preservation, experience teaches us to keep expectations modest. That leaves the national debt at $36 trillion and counting, threatening to increase inflation, raise interest rates, weaken the dollar and reduce the government’s capacity to make strategic investments. It’s disappointing to see the GOP , which always claimed to be the party of fiscal discipline when Democrats were in power, freeze out its deficit hawks when it controls the nation’s wallet. Trump has nominated some smart people for his economic team, including Scott Bessent for Treasury secretary, and we’re hopeful that grown-up thinking will prevail. Other Trump nominees could work against that, however. Consider Billy Long, a former GOP congressman from Missouri, whom Trump has proposed to head the Internal Revenue Service. The colorful Long is a professional auctioneer who went into business peddling a fraud-plagued tax credit after leaving public office. During his tenure, he joined other opportunists in scoring cheap political points by demonizing the IRS and pushing attention-getting tax ideas, evidently for effect . Exhibit A is Long’s effort to scrap the federal tax code, and the IRS along with it, while replacing the lost revenue with a regressive national sales tax. That would raise the cost of goods and services by anywhere from 30 to 44 cents for every dollar spent. It doesn’t take a political genius to recognize that raising the cost of a $1 item to as much as $1.44 would never work. Yet Long pushed for it, and now this unserious nominee is in line to run one of the most serious government agencies. Rather than promising to tear down the IRS for the sake of sound bites, the GOP needs to get real about change. This agency that everyone loves to hate will be crucial to carrying out its tax plan in 2025 and beyond. And, as Bessent and some of the better Trump nominees surely recognize, the GOP has a precious opportunity to bring about reform, if its more credible leaders are willing to put in the work instead of voicing fantasies about eliminating essential government services. The complexity of the federal tax code imposes an estimated $546 billion in annual costs on the U.S. economy, including billions of hours in lost productivity and out-of-pocket compliance costs, according to the center-right Tax Foundation. ... If the incoming Trump administration wants its tax-change plans to be carried out effectively, it should retire its anti-IRS rhetoric and give the agency the tools it needs to get the job done. Honda, the second largest Japanese automaker and Nissan, the third largest, have announced that they would be merging the two companies. The whole process would be complete by 2026. Nissan as the larger shareholder will have a majority in the combined board post-merger. Nissan is the largest shareholder in the smaller Mitsubishi carmakers. Mitsubishi said that it would be considering being a part of the megamerger. The Honda-Nissan merger would create the third largest automaker in the world after Toyota and Volkswagen. In a press conference held on Friday, the chief executives of all the three companies, Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi, announced the merger plan and explained the reasons for the decision. Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe said, “The rise of Chinese automakers and new players has changed the car industry quite a lot. We have to build up capabilities to fight with them by 2030, otherwise we’ll be beaten.” That is a candid confession from the Japanese automakers who have dominated the global car scene for more than half-a-century, and literally broke the monopoly of American and European carmakers. The merger move can be seen as the Japanese showing enough alacrity in the face of the changing situation, and responding to it. The merger is expected to yield combined sales of $191 billion and a profit of $19 billion. The merger has ramifications for Honda’s and Nissan’s international tie-ups. French automakers Renault said that it would discuss with Nissan the changes brought about by the merger. Honda’s Mibe said that Nissan’s arrangements with Renault would continue and so would Honda’s with the American carmaker General Motors. There are two challenges that the two Japanese auto majors have to face after the merger. It is the production of electric vehicles (EVs) or hybrids because that is the future because of the pressure to curb carbon emissions. America’s Tesla and China’s BYD are seen as the lead players, and in Japan there are smaller car manufacturers who have displayed agility with the new technologies needed to make the EVs. Honda and Nissan want to move into the EV market in a big way and with a strong base. Meanwhile, Honda has made it clear that the merger with Nissan was not because of the losses that Honda was making. As a matter of fact Honda has recovered from its losses and its two-wheelers are still dominating the market. The carmakers, especially the fossil-fuel dependent vehicle manufacturers, are moving out of their comfort zones of producing the petrol- and diesel-run cars. It is not the case that Tesla and BYD will make the other car manufacturers redundant. The demand for cars will continue, and in place of ICE vehicles, it will now be EVs, and neither Tesla nor the Chinese EV-makers can meet the global demand on their own. So there is time for the car manufacturers to switch to the new technology of EVs and keep their share of the global car market. Tesla and Chinese EV-makers have shown what the future looks like. The others have no other option but to change and adapt. It should not come as a surprise that major changes are taking place in the way industries are being run. They have run in a certain way for the last 150 years, based on fossil fuels like coal and oil. The crisis of climate change has made it necessary to change the mode of production, especially the energy sources that were in use till now. Clean and renewable energy is the demand of the day. There are many countries, governments and industries which are still resistant to the idea of decarbonising the economy, but it cannot be resisted for too long. Switching to green energy is inevitable. And the carmakers are moving in the right direction.

Walmart said it will phase out the terms "diversity, equity and inclusion" (DEI) and "Latinx," end supplier diversity programs, shutter a racial equity center and pull out of a prominent gay rights index. The announcement comes in the wake of similar moves by a string of prestige brands -- from Ford, John Deere and Lowe's to Harley-Davidson and Jack Daniel's -- reflecting a backlash against so-called political correctness in American public life. The rightward shift is credited in part for populist Donald Trump's White House comeback and for laying the groundwork for a 2023 Supreme Court ruling ending affirmative action in college admissions. DEI initiatives aim to right historical discrimination but conservatives have long criticized them as unfairly targeting white people, particularly men, as well as being performative "virtue-signaling." Anti-DEI activist Robby Starbuck, who lobbied Walmart before its announcement, celebrated the "biggest win yet for our movement to end wokeness in corporate America" and noted that the company's stock had risen 2.1 percent. "Our movement is a force in the market.
