Ohio State to host Tennessee in first-round showdown to determine No. 1 Oregon's Rose Bowl matchup
November 30 - A melee broke out at midfield of Ohio Stadium after Michigan upset No. 2 Ohio State 13-10 on Saturday. After the Wolverines' fourth straight win in the series, players converged at the block "O" to plant its flag. The Ohio State players were in the south end zone singing their alma mater in front of the student section. When the Buckeyes saw the Wolverines' flag, they rushed toward the 50-yard line. Social media posts showed Michigan offensive lineman Raheem Anderson carrying the flag on a long pole to midfield, where the Wolverines were met by dozens of Ohio State players and fights broke out. Buckeyes defensive end Jack Sawyer was seen ripping the flag off the pole and taking the flag as he scuffled with several people trying to recover the flag. A statement from the Ohio State Police Department read: "Following the game, officers from multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in breaking up an on-field altercation. During the scuffle, multiple officers representing Ohio and Michigan deployed pepper spray. OSUPD is the lead agency for games and will continue to investigate." Michigan running back Kalel Mullings on FOX said: "For such a great game, you hate to see stuff like that after the game. It's bad for the sport, bad for college football. At the end of the day, some people got to learn how to lose, man. "You can't be fighting and stuff just because you lost the game. We had 60 minutes and four quarters to do all that fighting. Now people want to talk and fight. That's wrong. It's bad for the game. Classless, in my opinion. People got to be better." Once order was restored, officers cordoned the 50-yard line, using bicycles as barriers. Ohio State coach Ryan Day in his postgame press conference said he wasn't sure what happened. "I don't know all the details of it. But I know that these guys are looking to put a flag on our field and our guys weren't going to let that happen," he said. "I'll find out exactly what happened, but this is our field and certainly we're embarrassed at the fact we lost the game, but there's some prideful guys on our team that weren't just going to let that happen." The Big Ten has not yet released a statement on the incident. --Field Level Media Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles. , opens new tab

EL SEGUNDO — Running back J.K. Dobbins declined to talk about his injured knee Thursday. Coach Jim Harbaugh would only say that Dobbins looked “good” in practice. Officially, the Chargers listed Dobbins as questionable to play in Saturday’s game against the New England Patriots. Dobbins has been sidelined for four weeks, placed on injured reserve because of an injury suffered in the first half of the Chargers’ loss Nov. 25 to the Baltimore Ravens. Dobbins remained on injured reserve this week, although the Chargers opened his window to return to the active roster Monday. He could be activated Friday and be in the lineup for Saturday’s game, helping the Chargers defeat the Patriots and clinch an AFC wild-card berth with their 10th victory. Or the Chargers could play it safe and wait to activate Dobbins, their leading rusher with 766 yards and eight touchdowns on 156 carries this season. The Chargers’ regular-season finale is either Jan. 4 or 5 against the Raiders in Las Vegas. The oddsmakers favor the Chargers (9-6) over the Patriots (3-12). Given the significance of the Chargers’ game Saturday against the Patriots, and given the fact that running back Gus Edwards was ruled out of the game because of an ankle injury suffered during their victory Dec. 9 over the Denver Broncos , it would seem imperative to have their best running back on the field in Week 17. If neither Dobbins nor Edwards can play, Harbaugh would turn to rookie Kimani Vidal and second-year running back Hassan Haskins to carry the ball in the most important game of the season for the Chargers. If the weather forecast becomes reality, the ground game could be extra important. As of Thursday afternoon, Saturday’s forecast calls for a high of 42 degrees with a 75% chance of rain in Foxborough, Massachusetts, the suburban Boston site of Gillette Stadium. Last season, the visiting Chargers hydroplaned their way to a 6-0 victory over the Patriots in a game in which their only scores came via two field goals from Cameron Dicker. Quarterback Justin Herbert completed only 22 of 37 passes for 212 yards and the Chargers rushed for just 29 yards. Controlling the ball with an effective running game figures to be critical in the Chargers’ first cold-weather game of the season. It could become all the more significant if the rain arrives as scheduled and the passing game becomes all the more dicey with a slick football and a soggy field. The Chargers did receive a dose of inclement weather earlier this week when a cool mist swept off the ocean during Tuesday’s practice. It was hardly enough to be called rain, though. The temperatures barely dipped below 60 degrees, hardly the stuff of a wintry afternoon in New England. “Most all of us have played in those kinds of games or grew up in that kind of weather,” Harbaugh said. “Bottom line is these guys are young and they’re healthy and their heart pumps warm blood. It pumps it from the arteries to the veins to the tributaries to the capillaries throughout their whole body.” Harbaugh paused. “I might have gotten the order wrong,” he said, laughing. “It’s been well-established that I’m not a doctor. But I know it’s warm blood. Young, healthy, athletic guys are able to generate it.” INJURY REPORT Edwards, linebacker Denzel Perryman (groin) and right guard Trey Pipkins III (hip) were ruled out of Saturday’s game. Dobbins, tight ends Will Dissly (shoulder) and Hayden Hurst (illness) and defensive back Elijah Molden (knee) were listed as questionable to play against the Patriots.
How the stock market defied expectations again this year, by the numbersRussia shares higher at close of trade; MOEX Russia Index up 1.39%Kyiv says fatalities among its soldiers since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022 have reached 43,000, a rare estimate much lower than a figure offered by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. The toll was revealed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a statement on the social media platform X on Sunday, hours after Trump claimed that Ukraine’s had “lost” 400,000 soldiers. Still, it’s unclear if Trump was referring to wounded troops as well as those killed. Zelenskyy said there had been 370,000 cases of “medical assistance for the wounded” on the battlefield, including light or repeat injuries. About half of the Ukrainian soldiers wounded in action have later returned to service, he said. In a Truth Social post on Sunday, the morning after a meeting in Paris with Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump provided an estimate of casualties for both Ukrainian and Russian troops in the almost three-year old war. “Close to 600,000 Russian soldiers lay wounded or dead,” Trump said. Russia’s defense ministry doesn’t publish casualty estimates. Trump called for an “immediate ceasefire” followed by negotiations, adding that Zelenskyy “would like to make a deal” to end the war. While Ukraine’s government doesn’t deny it seeks peace, it has repeatedly stressed the necessity of obtaining meaningful guarantees from its allies, led by the U.S. “When we talk about an effective peace with Russia, we should first of all talk about effective guarantees of peace,” Zelenskyy said in Sunday’s X post. The war “cannot simply end with a piece of paper and a few signatures,” Zelenskyy said. “A ceasefire without guarantees can be reignited at any moment.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also responded to Trump’s social media post, repeating Moscow’s message that it’s open to talks but referring to “conditions” outlined in July by Putin. That included “taking account the realities emerging ‘on the ground,” Peskov said, at a time Russian forces have been making steady advances through parts of eastern Ukraine. The updated fatality estimate from Zelenskyy implies that about 12,000 service members have died since February, when Ukraine’s leader officially estimated the death toll at 31,000. In an interview with Japan’s Kyodo News published on Dec. 1, Zelenskyy denied reports that as many as 80,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed. The Wall Street Journal reported the figure in September, citing sources it didn’t identify. (With assistance from Áine Quinn.) ©2024 Bloomberg L.P. Visit bloomberg.com. Three of them were from Karnataka and two from Maharashtra. We are soldiers, and our lives are dedicated to the nation.” Later in the day, Sepoy Marigond’s remains were transported to Mahalingapur in Rabkavi taluk, where his final rites were conducted with full military and state honours. Subedar Tirukannavar’s remains were laid to rest in his village, Panta Balekundri. His wife, Nanda, received the Tricolour draped over his coffin. Lance Naik Anoop Poojari’s mortal remains were flown to Mangaluru airport before being transported to Kundapur. They were kept for public viewing at the Bijadi Padu government school grounds. BJP MPs Brijesh Chowta and Kota Srinivasa Poojary received the remains at the airport earlier in the day. At the War Memorial in Belagavi, Siddaramaiah offered floral tributes to Subedar Tirukannavar and Sepoy Marigond. Addressing the media, he said, “The lives and careers of soldiers are of the highest honour. It is deeply saddening that soldiers from our state have been martyred in an accident. I pray for the peace of their souls and share in the grief of their families.” He also assured that the state government would provide all necessary support to the bereaved families. The accident occurred when the soldiers’ vehicle, travelling from Nilam Headquarters to Balnoi Ghora Post, veered off the road and fell into the gorge. Brigadier Mukherjee confirmed that a quick reaction team (QRT) from the regiment immediately reached the site to carry out rescue and relief operations.

Kwadwo Baah had to be pulled away by Watford manager Tom Cleverley after his manic celebrations sparked a post-match free-for-all against Portsmouth. Hornets striker Baah was sent off after goading the 2,000 visiting fans following the final whistle as Rocco Vata’s 95th-minute winner broke Pompey’s hearts in a 2-1 win. As a deputation of Portsmouth players rushed to confront Baah, Cleverley ran 40 yards to usher him away before referee Geoff Eltringham showed the fiery German a second yellow card. Angry Pompey manager John Mousinho was scathing of Baah’s antics, saying: “If one of my players did that, he would be in serious danger of never playing for Portsmouth again.” And he was equally unimpressed by Eltringham’s handling of a feisty second half, where Watford ’s equaliser from a controversial penalty ignited the home side’s fightback. Mousinho groaned: "I tried to get an explanation from the fourth official and didn't get much of one. I thought the referee's performance, particularly in the second half, was well below the standard we need at this level. "At the time I thought it was no penalty because the referee didn't give a penalty. I don't know how it has been given. I'm furious because we need more. I'm just lost for words about how we have to deal with this every single week. After the penalty, the referee allowed eight players to surround our keeper and [Paddy] Lane gets punched in the face and nothing happens.” Cleverley took exception to Mousinho’s comments but gave Baah a rocket afterwards, saying: “I want us to win with humility and dignity. If there’s a bad taste in the mouth it’s because he now serves a suspension. You can’t go over to supporters in a hostile environment and do that. “I will deal with him internally but, until the final whistle, there was one group of players who kept their heads and to hear John has been commenting on my players is disappointing.” As Cleverley’s unbeaten home record since taking over as Watford boss stretched to 17 games, he delivered only their fifth win in 21 games on Boxing Day. Pompey went in front after 10 minutes, Zak Swanson punishing James Morris’s poor clearance with a crisp, low finish. The Hornets were level 12 minutes after the break when Freddie Potts brought down Baah on the edge of the box and Eltringham only pointed to the spot after an exhaustive conference with his assistant. Edo Kayembe buried the penalty high beyond Nicolas Schmid, and both players were booked for push-and-shove in the afters. Portsmouth appeared to be holding on for a deserved point until Watford sub Moussa Sissoko charged into the box, Schmid parried and Vata slid the loose ball into an empty net from eight yards.
