KSE-100 posts third-highest gain of 3,370 points KARACHI: Stocks witnessed the third highest gain on Thursday with the KSE-100 surging by 3,370 points amid a significant decline in T-bill cut-off yields. The benchmark index recorded a remarkable increase of 185 per cent; from 40,000 to 112,000 in just 18 months. The KSE-100 index surged by 3,370.29 points or 3.04 per cent to 114,180.51 points against the 110,810.22 points recorded in the previous session. The highest index of the day remained at 114,408.62 points while the lowest level was recorded at 111,308.66 points. CEO of Topline Securities Muhammed Sohail said, “[The KSE-100’s gain of over 3,000 points] marks the best comeback in the Pakistan Stock Market’s 75-year history, tripling in value and showcasing unmatched resilience. He said the KSE-100 index posted its third-highest gain ever, soaring 3,370 points to close at 114,181. “Remarkably, nine of the top 10 largest gains have been recorded in 2024.” he said. In one particularly “cringe-worthy” moment of Kai Trump’s behind-the-scenes video, Trump is seen sending Musk into “an awkward spiral” after he asks him whether a rocket booster can be reused — after it has crashed into Gulf of Mexico in a fireball, the Daily Beast reported . Israel hasn't allowed foreign reporters to enter Gaza except on military embeds. Israel has banned the pan-Arab Al Jazeera network and accused six of its Gaza reporters of being militants . The Qatar-based broadcaster denies the allegations and accuses Israel of trying to silence its war coverage, which has focused heavily on civilian casualties from Israeli military operations. Separately, Israel's military said that a 35-year-old reserve soldier was killed during fighting in central Gaza early Thursday. A total of 389 soldiers have been killed in Gaza since the start of the ground operation more than a year ago. The war began when Hamas-led militants stormed across the border in an attack on nearby army bases and farming communities. They killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted around 250. About 100 hostages are still inside Gaza, at least a third believed to be dead. Israel's air and ground offensive has killed more than 45,000 Palestinians, according to the Health Ministry. It says more than half the fatalities have been women and children, but doesn't say how many of the dead were fighters. Israel says it has killed more than 17,000 militants, without providing evidence. The offensive has caused widespread destruction and driven around 90% of the population of 2.3 million from their homes. Hundreds of thousands are packed into squalid tent camps along the coast, with little protection from the cold, wet winter. Also Thursday, people mourned eight Palestinians killed by Israeli military operations in and around the city of Tulkarem in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. WASHINGTON — The FBI should have done more to gather intelligence before the Capitol riot, according to a watchdog report Thursday that also said no undercover FBI employees were on the scene on Jan. 6, 2021, and that none of the bureau's informants was authorized to participate. The report from the Justice Department inspector general's office knocks down a fringe conspiracy theory advanced by some Republicans in Congress that the FBI played a role in instigating the events that day, when rioters determined to overturn Republican Donald Trump's 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden stormed the building in a violent clash with police. The review, released nearly four years after a dark chapter in history that shook the bedrock of American democracy, was narrow in scope, but aimed to shed light on gnawing questions that have dominated public discourse, including whether major intelligence failures preceded the riot and whether the FBI in some way provoked the violence. The report offers a mixed assessment of the FBI's performance in the run-up to the riot, crediting the bureau for preparing for the possibility of violence and for trying to identify known "domestic terrorism subjects" who planned to come to Washington that day. But it said the FBI, in an action the now-deputy director described as a "basic step that was missed," failed to canvass informants across all 56 of its field offices for any relevant intelligence. That was a step, the report concluded, "that could have helped the FBI and its law enforcement partners with their preparations in advance of January 6." The report found 26 FBI informants were in Washington for election-related protests on Jan. 6, including three who were tasked with traveling to the city to report on others who were potentially planning to attend the day's events. While four informants entered the Capitol, none were authorized to do so by the bureau or to break the law, the report said. Many of the 26 informants provided the FBI with information before the riot, but it "was no more specific than, and was consistent with, other sources of information" that the FBI acquired. The FBI said in a letter responding to the report that it accepts the inspection general's recommendation "regarding potential process improvements for future events." The lengthy review was launched days after the riot as the FBI faced questions over whether it had missed warning signs or adequately disseminated intelligence it received, including a Jan. 5, 2021, bulletin prepared by the FBI's Norfolk, Virginia, field office that warned of the potential for "war" at the Capitol. The inspector general found the information in that bulletin was broadly shared. FBI Director Chris Wray, who announced this week his plans to resign at the end of Biden's term in January, defended his agency's handing of the intelligence report. He told lawmakers in 2021 that the report was disseminated though the joint terrorism task force, discussed at a command post in Washington and posted on an internet portal available to other law enforcement agencies. "We did communicate that information in a timely fashion to the Capitol Police and (Metropolitan Police Department) in not one, not two, but three different ways," Wray said at the time. Separately, the report said the FBI's New Orleans field office was told by a source between November 2020 and early January 2021 that protesters were planning to station a "quick reaction force" in northern Virginia "to be armed and prepared to respond to violence that day in DC, if necessary." That information was shared with the FBI's Washington Field Office, members of intelligence agencies and some federal law enforcement agencies the day before the riot, the inspector general found. But there was no indication the FBI told northern Virginia police about the information, the report said. An FBI official told the inspector general there was "nothing actionable or immediately concerning about it." A cache of weapons at a Virginia hotel as part of a "quick reaction force" was a central piece of the Justice Department's seditious conspiracy case against Oath Keeper leader Stewart Rhodes and other members of the far-right extremist group. The conspiracy theory that federal law enforcement officers entrapped members of the mob has been spread in conservative circles, including by some Republican lawmakers. Rep. Clay Higgins, R-La., recently suggested on a podcast that agents pretending to be Trump supporters were responsible for instigating the violence. Former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., who withdrew as Trump's pick as attorney general amid scrutiny over sex trafficking allegations, sent a letter to Wray in 2021 asking how many undercover agents or informants were at the Capitol on Jan. 6 and if they were "merely passive informants or active instigators." In North America, Tesla has been opening up the Supercharger network to electric vehicles from other automakers for the better part of the year. Things have been moving slowly, and there are a few reasons for that. First off, earlier this year, and the company had to rebuild it, including hiring back some employees. That has slowed things down. But Tesla also has to take things a bit slower because non-Tesla EVs using the Supercharger network complicate things. We previously reported that the fact many charge ports are located at different locations on the vehicles than on Tesla vehicles, which are already on the back of the driver’s side. It forces those EV drivers to park in a way that blocks another charging stall when plugging in at a Supercharger. Longer cables at Supercharger stations are expected to fix that, but Tesla has been slow to deploy its new V4 stations, which are equipped with much longer cables. Tesla has now released an update on the situation and how it is addressing the situation: These are all great updates. It is frustrating to see on Tesla’s navigation that there are stalls available at the Supercharger station you are going to just to find out that the information is not accurate. In some cases, that can be because there’s indeed a stall where no one is plugged in, but you can’t park there because a non-Tesla EV is blocking it, which is OK as per Tesla’s integration of non-Tesla EVs. It looks like now Tesla is using the data it gets when a non-Tesla EV plugs into a Supercharger to figure out whether it must be blocking the next stall. If that’s the case, that Supercharger will be marked as non-available. It probably should have been done from the start, but I’m happy to see it happening now. Tesla has also disclosed that it is designing and redesigning stations so that it wouldn’t happen in the first place. With Supercharger V4 having longer cables, Tesla now expects to have more longer than shorter cables within the next year and a half. Finally, Tesla also says that it has been encouraging other automakers to place their charge port at the location. I hope the latter point proves successful because I think it’s a no-brainer. The charge port should be at the back of the driver’s side. Some automakers have also been using dual ports, most often with only one DC fast-charging one, on the driver’s side, and another level 2 charge port on the right side, which makes sense, especially for street charging in cities. Netflix's Squid Game Season 1 was one of the biggest hits ever for the streamer. The Korean drama series from Hwang Dong-hyuk pitted those on the lower end of the socio-economic ladder , and deeply in debt, against each other in a twisted win-or-die tournament for a large cash prize. So, in celebration of Season 2, Jung-jae and Seo-hwan sat down with me to reflect on behind-the-scenes moments and important themes from Squid Game 's second installment. 1. What messages about classism and society in this season do you think are most important for viewers to take away? Lee Seo-hwan : Being a player in Season 2, I felt that this season is not really about classism, but it's really about the choices that people make. Choice, in and of itself, becomes very important in Season 2 because we have a voting system. And it may look like a democracy from the outset, but there's a lot of psychological warfare going on behind the scenes. And it's not a vertical, hierarchical situation, but it's horizontal. There are a lot of different sides, people taking sides and being in silos, and when you make a choice, you understand that you have to be responsible for your choice. That is the main theme of this season. Lee Jung-jae: What really stood out for me in Season 2 is that we have to vote for every round, as my friend just said, and the vote becomes as tense as the games themselves. There's so much at stake for the participants, and they want to talk people into siding with them, and if you don't side with me, you become my enemy that I have to kill. There's a lot of tension around that. 2. Do you think that represents the world right now? Lee Jung-jae: I think it's parallel to the political sphere that we see nowadays. It's so polarized, it's just two sides, and they can't come to a compromise. So it feels like, "Is this the right way to go? Is this how politics should be?" Competing with other people is good, but should we not have so much conflict with people? So those are the questions that Squid Game Season 2 deals with, and I think it could provide a lot of food for thought for the viewers. 3. What's an important difference between Season 2 and Season 1 that creates a different feeling or element? Lee Seo-hwan : In Season 2, you see less of the VIPs compared to Season 1. I thought about why director Hwang did it that way. When we don't see the VIPs, the entire drama, the Squid Game Show, becomes more like The Truman Show . The Front Man is like the producer of the Truman Squid Game Show , and we are the viewers who are watching from afar. 4. Jung-jae, in Season 1, your character's main motive was making money. But this season, revenge or retribution is his main motive. How do you feel like your character evolved? Lee Jung-jae: Gi-hun is just an ordinary man. He doesn't have any special abilities. So I question myself, and I think the viewers would question themselves: Can he really bring the people behind the game to justice? Does he have the power? Could he complete his mission of ending the game by creating unity with the participants? Or maybe people would not want to listen to him. They might attack him, and maybe he would be in danger. 5. If you could play any other character in Season 2, who would it be? Lee Jung-jae: I actually want to try playing Gi-hun again. 6. Why is that? Lee Jung-jae: I could really relate to Gi-hun, because after witnessing all the atrocities that happened in the game, he just couldn't turn a blind eye to it. And I think I would have done the same. 7. Seo-hwan, what is your favorite scene that you filmed as Jeong-bae? Lee Seo-hwan: My favorite scene is when I'm talking with Gi-hun about what we did in the past. And I tell him, "Let's grab a soju when we get out of here." That line really tells me that he wants his normal life back, and he knows how precious that life was. We always say this in Korea, "Let's grab a soju." That means, "We'll meet up later," or "I'll see you again." We always say it when we part ways in Korea, but when I was saying the line in the show, it actually brought me to tears. For the first time, Jeong-bae is really noticing that his life is a very precious one, and he wants to return to that life. 8. Why is Jeong-bae's friendship with Gi-hun integral to this season? Lee Seo-hwan: They used to be coworkers, and they protested together for their rights, but they both got fired. So they're not just friends; they're more like comrades, and I'm an ex-Marine too, in the show. So that bond, that bromance, and that loyalty that I feel with Gi-hun, it's something that's very special. And it might sound cheesy, but I could even give up my life for my friend. 9. What was the hardest scene for both of you to film? Lee Seo-hwan: The round and round game. The lights would come on and off quickly. There would be sparks of lights. I have really bad eyesight, so that was quite blinding for me, and it was really slippery on the floor with all that blood. That was the most challenging scene for me to shoot. Lee Jung-jae: I would like to say that all scenes and all cuts were extremely difficult for me [ Laughs ]. 10. NoneMichael Croley | (TNS) Bloomberg News In the old days of 2016, when golfers visited the Dormie Club in West End, North Carolina — 15 minutes from the hotbed of American golf, Pinehurst — they were greeted by a small, single-wide trailer and a rugged pine straw parking lot. That trailer is now long gone. A gate has been installed at the club’s entrance and a long driveway leads to a grand turnaround that sweeps you past a new modern clubhouse that’s all right angles, with floor-to-ceiling glass. Seconds after you exit your car, valets are zipping up in golf carts, taking your name, then your bags, handing you keys to your own golf cart, and then zipping off to drop your luggage in the four-bedroom cottage where you’ll stay. A short walk past an expansive putting green you’ll find the pro shop — and then you’ll see the club’s most elegant feature: its golf course. The changes have all come about because Dormie Club was acquired in 2017 by the Dormie Network, a national group that owns seven private golf facilities from Nebraska to New Jersey. (“Dormie” is a word for being ahead in golf — the names were coincidences.) A key to the network’s success has been its ability to find clubs ripe for acquisition, with outstanding golf courses and existing on-site lodging or the room to build it, says Zach Peed, president of the company and its driving force. After investing in Arbor Links Golf Club in Nebraska City, Nebraska, in late 2015, Peed believed he saw an opening in the golf market: a new model of hospitality for traveling professionals who wanted a pure golf experience that eschewed the pools and pickleball courts of their home clubs. His clubs would become dream golf-only getaways for avid players and their pals. “Dormie Network’s concept was sparked by having played competitive golf in college, combined with an element of experiencing and understanding hospitality,” says Peed. “It made sense to blend the two to create golf trips that had more value than just playing golf. We want genuine hospitality to help create unforgettable memories and new friendships.” Part of that formula has been in the lodging strategy; in North Carolina, 15 four-bedroom cottages now are a short golf cart ride from the main clubhouse. In each, golfers all have their own king-size bed and en suite bathroom. A large common room is dominated by a flatscreen television along with a well-stocked bar and snacks. That ability to be both social, or tucked away in your room, extends to the expansive new clubhouse, where a high-ceilinged bar area with blond wood creates an inviting space for dining and drinking, and several hideaway rooms allow for more private diners with just your group. So far, their commitment to hospitality has been helping them expand in both membership and club usage in the increasingly competitive market for traveling golfers. Major players such as Bandon Dunes, Pinehurst Resort, and the Cabot Collection have created — or renovated — a new paradigm where golfers get dining and lodging that’s as showcase-worthy as the courses they play. Comfortable sheets and options beyond pub food aren’t luxuries anymore, but staples for many group trips. Dormie has answered that call by focusing on both the big details and the small ones, like having the dew wiped off each golf cart at dawn outside guest cottages before the day begins or having a tray of cocktails delivered to golfers as their final putt falls on the 18th green. These touches may seem over-the-top, but they stand out in a world where golf travel is increasingly popular — and expensive — after the pandemic lockdowns. Since 2020 there has been an explosion in participation in the sport, with new golfers picking up the game and avid golfers playing more: According to the National Golf Foundation, a record 531 million rounds were played in 2023, surpassing the high of 529 million set in 2021. Supreme Golf, a public golf booking website, reports in its latest analysis that the average cost of a tee time has increased to $49 in 2024 from $38 in 2019, a 30% increase. Those cost increases are also on par (pun intended) with the costs of private clubs and initiation fees during that same period, where membership rosters that were dwindling pre-COVID now have waitlists 50 to 60 people deep, according to Jason Becker, co-founder and chief executive officer of Golf Life Navigators, which matches homebuyers with golf course communities. “There’s been an absolute run on private golf. If we use southwest Florida as an example, where there are 158 golf communities, this time last November, only five had memberships available,” he said. That inability to find a club close to home has pushed avid golfers to look farther afield, choosing national memberships at clubs that require traveling, usually via plane, to play. Dormie has capitalized on this growing segment, offering two types of memberships: First, a national membership, where members pay an initiation fee and monthly dues just as they would at a local club, but instead of one club they have access to seven. The second option is a signature membership for companies, “which allows businesses to use our properties for entertainment needs and requires a multiyear commitment,” Peed says. The network also offers a limited number of regional memberships for those living within a certain distance of one of its clubs. Dormie Network declined to provide the cost of memberships or monthly dues and wouldn’t give membership numbers, but the clubs are structured to lodge roughly 60 golfers, max, on-site at any given property at any time. The total number of beds across the network’s portfolio of properties has increased from 84 in 2019 to 432 today. It saw a jump from 10,000 room nights in 2019 to 48,000 in 2023. This September, Dormie opened GrayBull in Maxwell, in Nebraska’s, Sandhills region. Dormie Network tabbed David McLay Kidd to build the course, who also built the original course at Oregon’s famed Bandon Dunes. Kidd says of the property GrayBull sits on, “It’s like the Goldilocks thing: not too flat, not too steep. It’s kind of in a bowl that looks inwards, and there are no bad views.” That kind of remote destination, where the long-range views are only Mother Nature or other golf holes, is what drives many traveling golfers these days. Peed says his team leaned on years of knowledge from Dormie’s acquisitions as they built GrayBull, which started construction in 2022. “We had an understanding of how our members and guests use the clubs that allowed us to take a blank canvas in the Sandhills of Nebraska and combine all of the greatest aspects of each Dormie property into one.” ©2024 Bloomberg L.P.
