This week, we’re helping a Lubbock, Texas elementary class that needs fairy tale books, and a kindergarten on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation that needs a printer. We hope that readers who support quality public school education will help by sharing or supporting our featured projects. The Inoculation Project is an ongoing, volunteer effort to crowdfund science, math, and literacy projects for public schools in low-income neighborhoods. As always, our conduit is DonorsChoose , a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation that facilitates tax-deductible donations to specific, vetted projects in public schools. It’s the time of year to remind you that, if you like helping DonorsChoose and feel you could use some more tax-deductible donations in 2024, but don’t have a lot of time to choose projects right now, you can always make a lump donation as an account credit. Such a donation, in any amount, goes into your DonorsChoose account, and you can use funds from it any time during the next year to apply to projects of your choosing. One year after you make the donation, if there is anything left unapplied, DonorsChoose will apply it to projects on their “urgent” list. 📚 Go to this link to do this, or to see answers to common questions. [Hey, I need to tell you that a breakfast I had scheduled for much earlier is now at just the time this diary posts, so I may not respond or update here right away — but I will!] We had a busy week last week! This project was #1a, which is not a thing, except when super-generous people complete both regular projects early enough that I know there will be more folks coming along wanting to participate. Mrs. Arias’s elementary school in Lubbock, Texas is lacking in fairy tales, and she needs some for her classroom library. W e have a 2x matching grant available, from one of the favorite authors we’ve seen in our projects: T he Mo & Cher Willems Foundation thanks teachers and donors for their work getting more new books into the hands of new readers! [ Looks like this matching grant money has run out . It took us a long way, on this and the previous project! We will certainly be able to complete this project — it’ll just take a bit longer.] Resources: Help me give my students the wonder of fairy tales as they begin their reading journey! Economic need: An Equity Focus School; n early all students from low‐income households. Location: Hodges Elementary School, Lubbock, Texas Total: $252.58 Still Needed: $ 232.58 $158.16 Project description by Mrs. Arias: Our elementary school serves a diverse student population, many of whom face socioeconomic challenges that limit their access to quality literature at home. Fairy tales have long been cherished for their timeless appeal and their ability to foster imagination, critical thinking, and cultural understanding. Unfortunately, our library’s collection of fairy tale picture books is outdated and insufficient to meet the needs of our young readers. We are seeking funding to curate a vibrant collection of fairy tale picture books that will inspire, educate, and engage our students. They will help us support classroom instruction by aligning with literacy and social studies curricula. Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! I’m recycling last week’s video, the trailer from an interesting 2005 Terry Gilliam fantasy that reimagined the Brothers Grimm as con men who get more than they bargained for. x x YouTube Video Then, we have a new project #2 this week that I will call a “longer-term” project. However, in my experience, once donors at large notice Reservation projects we’ve taken up, they do not remain open long. We’ll see, but of course, every project we can help to get completed is a good thing. If it doesn’t happen that way, there’s plenty of time for us to work on this. [Sunday: See what I mean?] Ms. Carnacito is a never-before-funded teacher with a kindergarten class in a South Dakota town on the Rosebud Reservation , home of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe of the Sicangu Lakota people. A reliable color printer would be a welcome resource for her classroom. Resources: Help me give my students an Epson EcoTank printer to create vibrant learning materials and colorful student projects, enriching their educational experience in our low-income kindergarten classroom. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; n early all students from low‐income households. Location: Todd County Elementary School, Mission, South Dakota Total: $246.07 Still Needed: $ 245.07 Completed, thank you! Please consider project #1 above. Project description by Ms. Scarlet Kristy Carnacito: In our kindergarten classroom, our days are filled with learning, exploration, and creativity. However, many of our activities rely heavily on visuals to help our students understand concepts and express their creativity. Having access to a reliable color printer with an EcoTank system would transform the way I can support my students. A color printer will allow us to print vibrant teaching materials, such as alphabet cards, story prompts, and visual aids that make learning more engaging. It will also enable my students to showcase their artistic creations, create class books, and take home colorful projects to share with their families. The EcoTank system will ensure that ink is affordable and sustainable, making this a long-term resource for our classroom. Your support will help me bring more color, creativity, and opportunity into the lives of my kindergartners. Project Goals: Enhance visual learning by providing colorful teaching materials. Encourage creativity and self-expression through printed student projects. Create lasting classroom resources to support current and future students. Why This Matters: Many of my students lack access to resources at home that support their education. By bringing a color printer into our classroom, I can ensure that every child has the tools they need to thrive and succeed. Your contribution will make a lasting impact on these young learners and their futures. Thank you for helping us print brighter tomorrows! Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! This short review’s language is a bit stilted, but it does a good job reviewing the features that make this printer a desirable choice. x x YouTube Video Both our original projects from last week were completed! Many thanks to our readers, both regular and new! Project #1, 4th Graders Love Novels! : Mrs. Wilson wanted her Nevada 4th-graders to be able to read a prizewinning novel about a character with learning disabilities. She writes: Our 4th graders are so excited to read this awesome novel, Fish in a Tree! Using various types of fiction and nonfiction is a great way for us to build our love of reading. Plus, who doesn’t love an awesome smelly bookmark to keep our places? Thank you again for your generosity! Project #2, Class Library : Ms. Drish is a never-before-funded Iowa teacher who is also new to teaching this year. She needed our help to improve her classroom library . She writes: Thank you so much for giving to my classroom and students! They will appreciate it so much and I as well! They will use these books everyday in their classroom library. Once again thank you so much. I am so beyond grateful and appreciative! You all are amazing and wonderful people! DonorsChoose has developed the designation Equity Focus Schools to describe some schools that submit projects. They meet two criteria: at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial, and at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need. Loren Eiseley’s adapted Star Thrower storyWASHINGTON D.C., DC — Jimmy Carter, the longest-lived American president died Sunday – more than a year after entering hospice care – at his home in the small town of Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife, Rosalynn, who died at 96 in November 2023, spent most of their lives. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden are among the many Americans mourning the loss Sunday. “Today, America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian,” they said in a statement . “He saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe. He was a man of great character and courage, hope and optimism. We will always cherish seeing him and Rosalynn together.” Their statement continued to recognize the work Carter did for the country and encouraged "young people" in the country to study Carter and his life if they're in "search of what it means to live a life of purpose and meaning." Businessman, Navy officer, evangelist, politician, negotiator, author, woodworker, citizen of the world — Carter forged a path that still challenges political assumptions and stands out among the 45 men who reached the nation’s highest office. The 39th president leveraged his ambition with a keen intellect, deep religious faith and prodigious work ethic, conducting diplomatic missions into his 80s and building houses for the poor well into his 90s. “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights and unselfish love,” said Chip Carter, the former president’s son, in a statement . “My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.” President Carter is survived by his children — Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosalynn, and one grandchild, according to the Carter Center . “We will miss them both dearly, but take solace knowing they are reunited once again and will remain forever in our hearts,” said Jill and Joe Biden. “To the entire Carter family, we send our gratitude for sharing them with America and the world.” President-elect Donald Trump took to his social media website Truth Social to offer the family his condolences and remember Carter. "The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude," he said. "Melania and I are thinking warmly of the Carter Family and their loved ones during this difficult time. We urge everyone to keep them in their hearts and prayers." In a statement issued Sunday, former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama said Carter’s beloved Maranatha Baptist Church “will be a little quieter on Sunday's” but added that the late former president “will never be far away — buried alongside Rosalynn next to a willow tree down the road, his memory calling all of us to heed our better angels.” Noting the “hundreds of tourists from around the world crammed into the pews” to see the former president teach Sunday school, as he did “for most of his adult life,” the Obamas listed Carter’s accomplishments as president. But they made special note of the Sunday school lessons, saying they were catalysts for people making a pilgrimage to the church. “Many people in that church on Sunday morning were there, at least in part, because of something more fundamental: President Carter’s decency.” Former Vice President Al Gore praised Jimmy Carter for living “a life full of purpose, commitment and kindness” and for being a “lifelong role model for the entire environmental movement.” Carter, who left the White House in 1981 after a landslide defeat to Ronald Reagan. concentrated on conflict resolution, defending democracy and fighting disease in the developing world. Gore, who lost the 2000 presidential election to George W. Bush, remains a leading advocate for action to fight climate change. Both won Nobel Peace Prizes. Gore said it is a testament to his "unyielding determination to help build a more just and peaceful world” that Carter is often “remembered equally for the work he did as President as he is for his leadership over the 42 years after he left office.” During Gore’s time in the White House, President Bill Clinton had an uneasy relationship with Carter. Former President Bill Clinton and his wife former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, remember Carter as a man who lived to serve others. “Hillary and I mourn the passing of President Jimmy Carter and give thanks for his long, good life. Guided by his faith, President Carter lived to serve others — until the very end," they said in a statement . The statement recalled Carter's many achievements and priorities, including efforts “to protect our natural resources in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, make energy conservation a national priority, return the Panama Canal to Panama, and secure peace between Egypt and Israel at Camp David." After he left office, the Clinton statement said, Carter continued efforts in "supporting honest elections, advancing peace, combating disease, and promoting democracy; to his and Rosalynn’s devotion and hard work at Habitat for Humanity — he worked tirelessly for a better, fairer world,” the statement said. Biden issued an official state funeral to be held in Washington D.C. for James Earl Carter, Jr., 39th President of the United States, 76th Governor of Georgia, Lieutenant of the United States Navy, graduate of the United States Naval Academy, and favorite son of Plains, Georgia, who gave his full life in service to God and country.

President-elect Donald Trump said the world owed Carter "a debt of gratitude." Former President Jimmy Carter died on Sunday at the age of 100. World leaders responded with an outpouring of support, celebrating Carter's legacy as a humanitarian . Carter served as president from 1977 to 1981 but is perhaps most known for his work after his presidency. Carter championed human rights and pushed for peace in various corners of the world. In 1982, he founded The Carter Center to focus on such issues and played an active role with Habitat for Humanity until the end of his life. President Joe Biden said the "world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian." "With his compassion and moral clarity, he worked to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil rights and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless, and always advocate for the least among us," Biden said in a statement. "He saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe." Biden said that the love Carter shared with his late wife, Rosalynn Carter , was "the definition of partnership" and that their leadership was "the definition of patriotism." Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer wrote on X that Carter led an "extraordinary life" that touched countless people's lives through his vision and generosity. May he rest in peace." Related stories Today, we honor President Carter’s lifetime of service and his commitment to leaving the world better than he found it. Bernie Sanders said on X that Carter would be remembered as a "decent, honest and down-to-earth man" for both his time as president and his later humanitarian work. "He will be sorely missed," Sanders wrote. US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg also shared a tribute to the former president on X, writing that Carter's "leadership, intellect, and moral example ennobled our country, during and ever since his presidency." "We urge everyone to keep them in their hearts and prayers."The safety of TikTok users “is at the core of the platform”, one of the social media giant’s executives has said as it announced 175 million people now use the platform each month. Christine Grahn, TikTok’s head of European public policy, said users needed to feel safe in order to properly use a platform, and this was a key factor for the company. She was speaking as the shortform video giant held its European Safety Forum in Dublin, where the company discussed upcoming new safety features, including looking into ways of using new machine learning technology to better spot under-13s trying to join the service, and announced plans to add more age restrictions to some facial effects and provide more information to younger users on how an effect might alter their appearance if applied. “If people don’t feel safe, they are not going to bring their authentic selves to the platform and express themselves, and that means that we don’t have the platform that we’re hoping to create,” Ms Grahn told the PA news agency. “In order for us to achieve the best result, which is, at the end of the day, safety for our users, we have everything to gain from working with partners of various sorts. “We adapt our products based on the research that comes out of that work, and we also work with academic partners to integrate their experience. “The end result is going to be so much better if we work together as a society to address societal issues rather than trying to do so in silos.” Richard Collard, associate head of policy for child safety online at the NSPCC, said it was “encouraging” to see TikTok looking to tackle age-related online safety issues. “Given the well documented risks and harmful content that proliferates on some social media platforms, it’s vital that tech companies do everything in their power to ensure the youngest children are not accessing their sites,” he said. “However, age limits only work if they are meaningfully enforced. It’s encouraging to see TikTok recognising this challenge and taking responsibility by using technology to help them uphold their own terms and conditions and keep children safer. “This is just the tip of the iceberg. Other social media sites must step up and find effective ways to assess the ages of their users. “Ofcom and the Government also have an important role to play in compelling tech bosses to deliver age-appropriate experiences for all their users.” Despite its efforts on safety, concerns have been raised in the US and elsewhere about the platform’s possible links to China – TikTok’s parent company is the China-based ByteDance – and critics have raised concerns TikTok could be pressured into handing over data to the Chinese government. TikTok remains banned from government devices in the UK, and its future in the US remains uncertain over a law that requires the site to be sold by ByteDance by January or face being banned in the United States – although it is unclear if president-elect Donald Trump will uphold these plans when he takes office in the same month. In response to these concerns, TikTok has repeatedly denied it does or ever would share data with the Chinese government, and has begun a £10 billion scheme to move its European user data to data centres in Europe to further enhance its security credentials. The scheme also includes independent oversight by a British cybersecurity firm, NCC Group, something Ms Grahn hailed as “unprecedented”. “We’re very proud of this industry-leading data security project, that aims to keep our users even more secure,” she told PA. “There’s a number of different parts in this project, but maybe one of the most interesting is this unprecedented third-party external oversight by British cybersecurity company NCC Group. “They are continuously monitoring the security gateways that surround the European enclave where we store European TikTok user data.” She added: “From our perspective, this has been a massive undertaking – 12 billion euros over the course of 10 years – and we are quite proud of the fact that we’re building out this model, and we do see it to be truly industry leading. “I think some of the aspects of this will also be industry-wide challenges, but we’re happy to be on this journey and we’re quite proud of the progress that we’ve made so far.”
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The president of South Korea early Wednesday lifted the martial law he imposed on the country hours earlier, bending to political pressure after a tense night in which troops surrounded parliament and lawmakers voted to reject military rule. President Yoon Suk Yeol, who appeared likely to be impeached over his actions, imposed martial law late Tuesday out of frustration with the opposition, vowing to eliminate “anti-state” forces as he struggles against opponents who control parliament and that he accuses of sympathizing with communist North Korea. Analysis by The Sun suggests at least 482 were admitted as female in a year despite having prostate, testicle or penis issues. They included 263 who suffered hyperplasia in the prostate — a non-cancerous enlargement of the gland that cannot occur in biological women as they do not have prostates. Another 85 had prostate cancer and 48 had “disorders of male genitals”. Figures cover the year to March at hospitals in England and Wales. NHS rules allow trans patients to have their gender changed on databases but kept off patient records. One GP insisted: “There’s pressure on staff not to offend patients. “But the fact they are recorded as women in the statistics is ridiculous.” Tory MP Sir John Hayes said: “You cannot change biology. “It is an immutable fact that these conditions only appear in biological men.” He added: “The fact the NHS is pandering to this is nonsense.” The NHS said: “These statistics report the gender registered by patients and therefore include trans women, with further patient details included in their health records.”Alabama flips RB Jace Clarizio from Michigan State
The British Government has announced the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, which will be required for Grenadians travelling to the United Kingdom, starting 8 January 2025. This new measure applies to all nationals who previously did not need a visa to enter the UK. It is part of efforts to enhance border security by pre-registering travellers’ details and credentials before their arrival. In a recent interview with Resident British High Commissioner Victor Clark it was emphasised that the ETA is not a visa and does not replace existing visa requirements. Individuals who previously needed a visa to enter the UK will still require one. The ETA is designed as a quick and streamlined online process, requiring applicants to have a valid passport and debit or credit card to complete the form. The application process for the ETA takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. Applicants are required to provide contact details, passport information, upload a digital photograph, and answer a series of questions. These questions are similar to those found on a landing card and include details about the purpose of the visit and planned activities in the UK. Once submitted, the application is processed within 3 working days, although responses may be provided sooner, due to the automated nature of the system. The ETA costs £10 and remains valid for 2 years. However, it is tied to the specific passport used during the application. If the passport expires within the 2-year period, the ETA will also expire, necessitating a new application with the new passport. Travellers can use the ETA multiple times for short stays, tourism, or business visits, provided these do not exceed 6 months. The ETA cannot be used for long-term stay or purposes outside of the stated categories. High Commissioner Clark urged Grenadians to familiarise themselves with the process and apply well in advance of their travel date to ensure a smooth journey. While last-minute applications are allowed, there is no guarantee of receiving a response in time. Travellers are advised to submit their ETA applications at least one to 2 weeks before their departure. It is important to note that having an ETA does not guarantee automatic entry into the UK. Standard border control checks will still apply upon arrival. If an ETA application is unsuccessful, travellers can apply for a visa, which involves a more detailed and rigorous process. For more information about the ETA and application guidelines, Grenadians can visit the official UK Government website at www.gov.uk . Travellers are encouraged to stay informed and prepared for this new travel requirement. The dialogue, titled “Partnering for Healthier Food Systems & Nutrition: SMEs and Food Regulators in Focus,” aimed to address critical challenges in regulatory compliance, innovation, and collaboration to improve nutrition and food safety in Pakistan. The N4G Summit is a global platform dedicated to mobilizing financial, political, and community action to combat malnutrition and ensure healthier food systems worldwide. This Stakeholder Dialogue is a crucial initiative to connect local challenges and solutions with the global discourse, contributing actionable insights to the summit’s agenda. The dialogue brought together diverse participants, including representatives from Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), regulatory bodies, and nutrition experts. The event began with a welcome address by Sarim Mehmood, CEO and Founder of Fruit of Sustainability, followed by opening remarks from Mr. Faiz Rasool, Head of Policy & Advocacy at GAIN Pakistan, who provided an overview of Pakistan’s malnutrition landscape and emphasized the role of SMEs in transforming food systems. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha, Director General of the Punjab Agriculture Food & Drug Authority (PAFDA), delivered special remarks highlighting the regulatory landscape in Pakistan and opportunities for fostering innovation and compliance. Participants were then divided into thematic focus groups to discuss key issues: Regulatory compliance and fostering innovation. Building SME capacity for sustained growth. Strengthening collaboration between SMEs and food regulators.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Right when the Los Angeles Rams' offense has dropped into a disconcerting slump, their defense has held three straight opponents under 10 points for the first time in decades. Although the Rams (10-6) are closing in on an NFC West title and another playoff berth with a five-game winning streak, the way they're doing it makes their postseason prospects quite unpredictable. The methodology has been strange, but the results are not: After holding off Arizona 13-9 on Saturday night, Los Angeles has won nine of 11 and is very close to claiming its fourth division title and sixth playoff berth in coach Sean McVay's eight seasons. “I’m proud of this group and the way they battled back,” Matthew Stafford said. “A lot of people doubted us, and a lot of people wrote us off at 1-4. To be able to sit here with our record what it is right now, I feel proud of this group.” The Rams hadn't held three straight opponents to single-digit scoring since 1975, but rookie coordinator Chris Shula's defense has done it with a strong front and a little luck on the back end, including the last-minute interception by Ahkello Witherspoon on a pass that deflected off star Arizona tight end Trey McBride's head at the goal line. Kyler Murray threw it before McBride was probably ready because Shula had called a zero blitz on first down at the Los Angeles 5. “I want to make more plays to make sure they don’t have to do as much as they did (against Arizona), but I’m proud of them,” Stafford said of the Rams' defense. "It’s awesome to watch where they were in training camp to where they are now. Shula is doing a hell of a job. We all knew he would. Those guys are playing hard for him.” But the Rams have scored more than 21 points just once during their five-game winning streak, their longest since their Super Bowl championship season in 2021. They’ve managed only three touchdowns in their last three games while scoring fewer than 20 points each time out, although that stretch includes games played in the rain (San Francisco) and in subfreezing temperatures (New York Jets). Against the Cardinals in Inglewood's ideal weather, the Rams’ offense still produced one TD, a season-worst 12 first downs and only 257 total yards — 139 fewer than Arizona. The running game struggled again, as it often does when all five starting offensive linemen aren't healthy, while the entire roster aside from Puka Nacua combined for just seven receptions for 60 yards — a surprising number for a McVay offense. “I don’t think there’s one thing I can point to,” McVay said Sunday. “I could go on and on about some of the things, starting with me, but then also about our execution in terms of getting connected in the run game, targeting the right way, making sure that the ball is going where it should go, and guys that I know are capable of playing the way that we’ve seen. If they do that, then I know that it’s not as far as sometimes it can feel like. But ultimately, we’ve got to do it.” What's working The young front four remains the strength of the defense. Jared Verse had a tremendous game on the edge against Murray and Arizona's running game, while fellow rookie Braden Fiske and second-year pros Kobie Turner and Byron Young all recorded sacks. What needs help The Rams again failed to establish the running game despite never trailing Arizona. Kyren Williams got his second-fewest carries of the season (13, with just five in the second half), while rookie Blake Corum was barely involved. Los Angeles' 3.9 yards per rush is the second-lowest mark in the NFL even though Williams began Sunday third in the league with 1,299 yards. Stock up Witherspoon not only made the game-saving interception, but the eight-year veteran who went unsigned until September also has seized the starting cornerback job from Cobie Durant, who didn't play on defense against the Cards despite being healthy again. McVay said Witherspoon's play during Durant's brief injury absence resulted in the change. Stock down Cooper Kupp had one catch against Arizona, and he has just 12 receptions in the past five games, matching the least productive five-game stretch of his eight-year career. Stafford has said the Rams need to get their Super Bowl 56 MVP more involved, and Kupp says he's healthy — yet it isn't happening. Injuries McVay believes the Rams stayed healthy outside of a stinger for rookie safety Kam Kinchens, but they felt the absence of RT Rob Havenstein, who injured his shoulder last week during an unpadded practice. Backup Joe Noteboom committed three holding penalties and got beaten repeatedly. Key number 4 — Stafford's consecutive games without taking a sack. That's the longest streak of his 16-year career, yet he has only one 200-yard passing game in that stretch. Next steps The Rams began Sunday preparing as if they'll play the Seahawks (9-7) next Saturday, although the game could happen a day later. McVay won't show his cards, but if the Rams have clinched, they seem likely to rest several regulars for the playoffs. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/NFL Greg Beacham, The Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — Juan Soto appears on a timetable to decide on where to sign either before or during baseball’s winter meetings in Dallas, which run from Dec. 8-12. with the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays, a person familiar with the negotiations said last week, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because details were not announced. Soto’s agent, Scott Boras, asked teams to submit initial offers by Thanksgiving, a second person familiar with the talks said, also on condition of anonymity because it was not announced. Soto is the top player available among . A four-time All-Star, Soto finished third in AL MVP voting after hitting .288 with 41 homers, 109 RBIs and 129 walks. He has a .285 career average with 201 homers, 592 RBIs and 769 walks over seven major league seasons. Soto turned down a $440 million, 15-year offer from Washington in 2022, prompting the Nationals to trade him to San Diego, which then dealt him to the Yankees last December. Soto then combined with Aaron Judge to lead New York to the World Series, . In his pitch to teams, Boras highlighted that Soto joined Mickey Mantle as the only players with seven RBIs in a World Series at age 21 or younger when he was with Washington, and at 20 became the youngest player with five postseason homers. Soto’s .906 postseason OPS through age 25 topped Mantle (.900) and Derek Jeter (.852). How much money will Soto get? Soto is likely to seek a record contract, topping Shohei Ohtani’s with the Los Angeles Dodgers last December. That might not mean Soto gets more than $700 million, though. Because Ohtani’s deal included $680 million in deferred money payable through 2043, it can be valued by different methods. For instance, Ohtani’s contract is valued at $46.1 million per season ($461 million total) under MLB’s luxury tax system, which used a 4.43% discount rate. The players’ association uses a 5% rate, which puts Ohtani’s contract at $43.8 million per year. For MLB’s regular payroll calculations, a 10% discount rates values Ohtani’s deal at just $28.2 million. Which means if Soto gets even $462 million without deferred payments, there’s an argument that his deal is the most valuable in MLB history. By average annual value, pitchers and are tied for second in baseball history at $43.33 million as part of contracts they signed with the New York Mets, deals that expired at the end of the 2024 season. In terms of total value, Ohtani surpassed outfielder through 2030. MLB’s longest contract is outfielder through 2034. How could MLB’s luxury tax factor into team’s bids on Soto? The Mets, Yankees, Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies all are likely to enter 2025 having paid luxury tax for three straight years, putting them at the highest rate: a 50% surcharge on payroll between $241 million and $261 million, 62% from $261 million to $281 million, 95% from $281 million to $301 million and 110% for each dollar above $301 million. Toronto may have dropped below the initial tax threshold this year, pending final figures next month. If the Blue Jays did fall under, their rates next year would reset to 20%, 32%, 62.5% and 80% for the four thresholds. The winter meetings would be a fitting place for Boras to announce a record deal If Soto reaches or announces an agreement at the winter meetings in Dallas’ Hilton Anatole, it would be a familiar location for a big Boras deal. Alex Rodriguez’s record $252 million, 10-year contract with the Texas Rangers was announced in December 2000 at what then was called the Wyndham Anatole Hotel. A-Rod’s deal more than doubled MLB’s previous high, a $121 million, eight-year contract between pitcher Mike Hampton and Colorado that was announced just two days earlier. “In two days, we’ve doubled a new highest salary,′′ said Sandy Alderson, then an executive vice president in the commissioner’s office. ”I don’t like the exponentiality of that.” Rodriguez was 25 at the time of the agreement with Texas, a free agent before entering his likely prime, like Soto. Besides Soto, which free agent hitters are available? Third baseman Alex Bregman, first basemen Pete Alonso and Christian Walker, and outfielders Anthony Santander and Teoscar Hernández are among the significant bats available to pursue and likely would interest some of the teams who fail to sign Soto. Bregman and Alonso, like Soto, are represented by Boras. ___ AP MLB:Healthcare Laboratory Informatics Market Set for Exceptional Growth in the Forecast 2024-2032
