By ERIC TUCKER WASHINGTON (AP) — A ninth U.S. telecoms firm has been confirmed to have been hacked as part of a sprawling Chinese espionage campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans, a top White House official said Friday. Biden administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies , as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. But Anne Neuberger, the deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, told reporters Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks. The update from Neuberger is the latest development in a massive hacking operation that has alarmed national security officials, exposed cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the private sector and laid bare China’s hacking sophistication. WASHINGTON (AP) — Deaths from starvation will likely pass famine levels in northern Gaza as soon as next month owing to Israel's “near-total blockade” of food and other aid, the U.S.-created global food-crisis monitor said on Tuesday. The finding by the Famine Early Warning System Network appeared to expose a rift within the Biden administration over the extent of starvation in northern Gaza, with the U.S. ambassador to Israel, Jacob Lew, disputing part of the data used in reaching the conclusion and calling the stepped-up famine warning “irresponsible." Northern Gaza has been one of the areas hardest-hit by fighting and Israel's restrictions on aid throughout its 14-month war with Hamas militants. Israel at one point increased the number of aid deliveries it permitted into northern Gaza under pressure from President Joe Biden. But the U.N. and aid groups say Israel recently has blocked almost all aid again. Only nine U.N. trucks have been able to bring in food and water over the past 2 1/2 months, Oxfam says. Israel says it has been operating in recent months against Hamas militants still active in northern Gaza. It says the vast majority of the area’s residents have fled and relocated to Gaza City, where most aid destined for the north is delivered. Experts from the National Institute of and History (INAH) are inspecting the site and believe it to be dated from either the Epiclassic period - from 650-950 CE - or the later Late Postclassic period which accepted to be from 1350 to 1519 CE. The site was under the control of the “Metzca lordship”, which INAH says had a “multi-ethnic imprint”. Boffins also believe settlements in the area go back around 14,000 years. “This archaeological record provides valuable insights into the human occupation of the Sierra Alta region, particularly in the Barranca de Metztitlán area, where historiography traces settlements back 14,000 years,” the INAH said in a report. The pyramid is around 42 metres long and 11 metres high. Further excavation could be tricky, however, with the pyramid’s base lying beneath the highway. South Sudan's President Salva Kiir held an urgent meeting of top security brass on Friday after a shootout at the home of powerful former spy chief Akol Koor, who was sacked almost two months ago amid rumours of a coup plot. Gunfire erupted on Thursday evening in the capital Juba, sparking concerns about the stability of the world's youngest country that is already plagued by power struggles, ethnic infighting and a deep economic malaise. The shooting around the home of Koor, who was fired by Kiir in early October and placed under house arrest, caused panic among local residents before it was contained after about an hour. Following the meeting, South Sudan People's Defence Forces (SSPDF) spokesman Lul Ruai Koang said the incident took place after a "misunderstanding" between security forces attempting to relocate the ex-head of the National Security Services. Koang said Koor had now agreed to the relocation "with his dear wife, one bodyguard, and a cook" elsewhere in the city. He would be provided with additional army protection at his new residence, but Koang emphasised he was not under "their (army) detention." He said four people, two civilians and two soldiers, had been killed during the confrontation. The meeting convened by Kiir included the heads of defence, police, national security and military intelligence. A source in the presidency press unit said Koor was also present. The Sudans Post newspaper quoted a security official as saying the meeting had "resolved all outstanding tensions" and that the spy chief and his family "have been assured of their safety". In an alert to its staff on the ground on Thursday, the United Nations in South Sudan had said the shooting was linked to the arrest of the former spymaster and advised people to take cover. Koang told AFP that Koor "remains at his house", and denied claims circulating on social media that he had fled to the UN compound in Juba. There was a heavy deployment of military forces around his home in the Thongpiny district, an AFP correspondent said, but traffic has resumed and people were going about their daily business. Police spokesman John Kassara said the situation was now calm but that Thongpiny remained sealed off and residents "should remain vigilant". Koor became head of the feared National Security Services (NSS) after South Sudan's independence in 2011 but was sacked in October leading to widespread speculation he had been planning to overthrow Kiir. After his dismissal from the NSS, Koor was appointed governor of Warrap State, Kiir's home state, but this was abruptly revoked by the president before he took the oath of office. Koang said there had been a "misunderstanding" between two security services forces present at Koor's residence when a third unit arrived for the relocation. "That was the start of the armed confrontation that you heard," he said. Four people, two servicemen and two civilians, were killed in the incident, he said, and two civilians were wounded. Koor's sacking came just two weeks after Kiir again postponed by two years, to December 2026, the first elections in the nation's history. The delay has exasperated the international community, which has been pressing the country's leaders to complete a transitional process, including unifying rival armed forces and drawing up a constitution. The NSS was at the centre of controversy in July when parliament approved amendments to legislation allowing the agency to continue to arrest -- without a warrant -- anyone accused of offences against the state, raising alarm among rights groups and South Sudan's international partners. The country has struggled to recover from a brutal civil war between forces loyal to Kiir and his now deputy Riek Machar from 2013 to 2018 that killed about 400,000 people and drove millions from their homes. Arkansas receiver Andrew Armstrong said Tuesday that he is entering the NFL Draft. Later in the day, a school spokesman told reporters that Armstrong will skip the Razorbacks' bowl game. The destination isn't yet known. Armstrong led the Southeastern Conference in both receptions (78) and receiving yards (1,140) but caught just one touchdown in 11 games this season. South Korea is a very neat and clean country, but in public spaces, trash cans are few and far between. Soon after our arrival in 2023, when I noticed this, I was told why: it’s a holdover from the pro-democracy riots of the 1980s, when students would hurl trash cans at the police. There is an undercurrent of toughness, even confrontation, in the politics of the Republic of Korea. Our introduction to this came by way of the Korean medical system when, in February last year, the government announced it would increase the number of slots for admission to medical schools. The medical profession erupted in outrage, residents and interns walked out, and even as professors had to scramble to fill in the gap, the profession as a whole supported the strike. The government reacted with increasing fury, at one point threatening to draft the striking residents and interns into the army to force them to go back to their posts. Public opinion was vehemently opposed to the strike, which was perceived to be merely in support of maintaining the wealth and status of doctors, in a society that has one of the lowest doctor-per-capita ratios in the developed world. The strike continues to this day; in the hospital, our family visits, oncology has ceased admitting new patients, and waiting times for many services are long. What this suggested to me was that public opinion can be ignored, even flouted, by a committed, even selfish, minority, when the stakes are high enough—and the institutions, even when supported by public opinion, can be thwarted as a result. For all his protestations to the contrary—it was symbolic, he said—President Yoon Suk-yeol of South Korea was serious about martial law. But he, as he himself claimed in his speech announcing his surprise move, felt his back was to the wall because his Cabinet kept being impeached, his budget was being slashed, his wife was facing perpetual investigations, so that he felt incapable of governing: not least, though he didn’t mention it, because his party had lost the midterms, reducing him to the status of a lame duck president. Observers would later point out that part of the reason the confrontation between the President and the opposition was so ferocious is that the leader of the opposition himself faces multiple investigations and that a snap presidential election would enable that leader, Lee Jae-myung, to avoid electoral disqualification. The problem (for Yoon, as it turned out) was he was up against a society and even a political system allergic to the idea of emergency rule. Our Supreme Court likes to quote the old maxim that “when the guns speak, the law falls silent,” and any martial law worthy of the name requires not just meticulous planning, but ruthless execution by an emboldened military. Two stories best illustrate the military response to being ordered to shut down the legislature and lock up lawmakers, take over the media, and pursue a conspiracy theory alleging the opposition rigged the midterms that the ruling party lost. The special forces supposed to chopper into the National Assembly were delayed 40 minutes because they had to wait for permission to enter a no-fly zone because the Air Force didn’t know martial law was going on. The delay party explains how assemblymen got the chance to hold an emergency session that voted down martial law; soldiers sent to raid the National Election Commission “all took a long walk or had instant ramen at convenience stores, then sauntered back after martial law was lifted.” A British news report put it best: martial law, it said, lasted half an hour longer than the film “Parasite.” Having not only failed, but spectacularly so, it seemed impossible for President Yoon to avoid impeachment. But he did, for reasons similar to the success of the Korean doctors: stubborn discipline born of self-interest. The Korean Constitution requires a two-thirds majority or 200 out of 300 assemblymen, to impeach. The President’s party, though diminished, retains 108 seats–eight more than is needed to deny the passage of an impeachment motion. If party disciple would hold, then impeachment would fail—over and over. On the day of the impeachment vote, he dangled an offer his party couldn’t refuse: he would, he said, recede from governance and share it with his party. But he would remain in office. Galeazzo Ciano, Benito Mussolini’s son-in-law and foreign minister, famously observed, “Victory has a hundred fathers but defeat is an orphan.” For the President’s party, the last time impeachment happened, the then ruling party helped throw their leader overboard—and themselves got massacred in the next election. The lesson then is a ruling party gains nothing by joining an impeachment bandwagon: as one administration lawmaker, Yun Sang-hyeon bluntly puts it: “We are getting criticized now, but people forget quickly. We saw it after the Park Geun-hye impeachment. Give it a year and they will vote for us again.” They would deny the opposition a victory, and still manage to hold on to power. BOSTON — Forty years ago, Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie rolled to his right and threw a pass that has become one of college football’s most iconic moments. With Boston College trailing defending champion Miami, Flutie threw the Hail Mary and found receiver Gerard Phalen, who made the grab while falling into the end zone behind a pair of defenders for a game-winning 48-yard TD. Maternal and infant mortality rates were high, as were contagious diseases that spread between people and animals. Combined with the devastation of two World Wars—and the Spanish Flu pandemic in between—the leading causes of death changed significantly after this period. So, too, did the way we diagnose and control the spread of disease. Starting with reforms as part of Roosevelt's New Deal in the 1930s, massive-scale, federal interventions in the U.S. eventually helped stave off disease transmission. It took comprehensive government programs and the establishment of state and local health agencies to educate the public on preventing disease transmission. Seemingly simple behavioral shifts, such as handwashing, were critical in thwarting the spread of germs, much like discoveries in medicine, such as vaccines, and increased access to deliver them across geographies. Over the course of the 20th century, life expectancy increased by 56% and is estimated to keep increasing slightly, according to an annual summary of vital statistics published by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2000. Death Records examined data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to see how the leading causes of death in America have evolved over time and to pinpoint how some major mortality trends have dropped off. According to a report published in the journal Annual Review of Public Health in 2000, pneumonia was the leading cause of death in the early 1900s, accounting for nearly 1 in 4 deaths. By the time World War I ended in 1918, during which people and animals were housed together for long periods, a new virus emerged: the Spanish Flu. Originating in a bird before spreading to humans, the virus killed 10 times as many Americans as the war. Many died of secondary pneumonia after the initial infection. Pneumonia deaths eventually plummeted throughout the century, partly prevented by increased flu vaccine uptake rates in high-risk groups, particularly older people. Per the CDC, tuberculosis was a close second leading cause of death, killing 194 of every 10,000 people in 1900, mainly concentrated in dense urban areas where the infection could more easily spread. Eventually, public health interventions led to drastic declines in mortality from the disease, such as public education, reducing crowded housing, quarantining people with active disease, improving hygiene, and using antibiotics. Once the death rates lagged, so did the public health infrastructure built to control the disease, leading to a resurgence in the mid-1980s. Diarrhea was the third leading cause of death in 1900, surging every summer among children before the impacts of the pathogen died out in 1930. Adopting water filtration, better nutrition, and improved refrigeration were all associated with its decline. In the 1940s and 1950s, polio outbreaks killed or paralyzed upward of half a million people worldwide every year. Even at its peak, polio wasn't a leading cause of death, it was a much-feared one, particularly among parents of young children, some of whom kept them from crowded public places and interacting with other children. By 1955, when Jonah Salk discovered the polio vaccine, the U.S. had ended the "golden age of medicine." During this period, the causes of mortality shifted dramatically as scientists worldwide began to collaborate on infectious disease control, surgical techniques, vaccines, and other drugs. From the 1950s onward, once quick-spreading deadly contagions weren't prematurely killing American residents en masse, scientists also began to understand better how to diagnose and treat these diseases. As a result, Americans were living longer lives and instead succumbing to noncommunicable diseases, or NCDs. The risk of chronic diseases increased with age and, in some cases, was exacerbated by unhealthy lifestyles. Cancer and heart disease shot up across the century, increasing 90-fold from 1900 to 1998, according to CDC data. Following the post-Spanish Flu years, heart disease killed more Americans than any other cause, peaking in the 1960s and contributing to 1 in 3 deaths. Cigarette smoking rates peaked at the same time, a major risk factor for heart disease. Obesity rates also rose, creating another risk factor for heart disease and many types of cancers. This coincides with the introduction of ultra-processed foods into diets, which plays a more significant role in larger waistlines than the increasing predominance of sedentary work and lifestyles. In the early 1970s, deaths from heart disease began to fall as more Americans prevented and managed their risk factors, like quitting smoking or taking blood pressure medicine. However, the disease remains the biggest killer of Americans. Cancer remains the second leading cause of death and rates still indicate an upward trajectory over time. Only a few types of cancer are detected early by screening, and some treatments for aggressive cancers like glioblastoma—the most common type of brain cancer—have also stalled, unable to improve prognosis much over time. In recent years, early-onset cancers, those diagnosed before age 50 or sometimes even earlier, have seen a drastic rise among younger Americans. While highly processed foods and sedentary lifestyles may contribute to rising rates, a spike in cancer rates among otherwise healthy young individuals has baffled some medical professionals. This follows the COVID-19 pandemic that began in 2020. At its peak, high transmission rates made the virus the third leading cause of death in America. It's often compared to the Spanish Flu of 1918, though COVID-19 had a far larger global impact, spurring international collaborations among scientists who developed a vaccine in an unprecedented time. Public policy around issues of safety and access also influences causes of death, particularly—and tragically—among young Americans. Gun control measures in the U.S. are far less stringent than in peer nations; compared to other nations, however, the U.S. leads in gun violence. Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens (around 2 in 3 are homicides, and 1 in 3 are suicides), and deaths from opioids remain a leading cause of death among younger people. Globally, the leading causes of death mirror differences in social and geographic factors. NCDs are primarily associated with socio-economic status and comprise 7 out of 10 leading causes of death, 85% of those occurring in low- and middle-income countries, according to the World Health Organization. However, one of the best health measures is life expectancy at birth. People in the U.S. have been living longer lives since 2000, except for a slight dip in longevity due to COVID-19. A gate has been installed at the club’s entrance and a long driveway leads to a grand turnaround that sweeps you past a new modern clubhouse that’s all right angles, with floor-to-ceiling glass. Seconds after you exit your car, valets are zipping up in golf carts, taking your name, then your bags, handing you keys to your own golf cart, and then zipping off to drop your luggage in the four-bedroom cottage where you’ll stay. A short walk past an expansive putting green you’ll find the pro shop — and then you’ll see the club’s most elegant feature: its golf course. The changes have all come about because Dormie Club was acquired in 2017 by the Dormie Network, a national group that owns seven private golf facilities from Nebraska to New Jersey. A key to the network’s success has been its ability to find clubs ripe for acquisition, with outstanding golf courses and existing on-site lodging or the room to build it, says Zach Peed, president of the company and its driving force. After investing in Arbor Links Golf Club in Nebraska City, Nebraska, in late 2015, Peed believed he saw an opening in the golf market: a new model of hospitality for traveling professionals who wanted a pure golf experience that eschewed the pools and pickleball courts of their home clubs. His clubs would become dream golf-only getaways for avid players and their pals. “Dormie Network’s concept was sparked by having played competitive golf in college, combined with an element of experiencing and understanding hospitality,” says Peed. “It made sense to blend the two to create golf trips that had more value than just playing golf. We want genuine hospitality to help create unforgettable memories and new friendships.” Part of that formula has been in the lodging strategy; in North Carolina, 15 four-bedroom cottages now are a short golf cart ride from the main clubhouse. In each, golfers all have their own king-size bed and en suite bathroom. A large common room is dominated by a flatscreen television along with a well-stocked bar and snacks. That ability to be both social, or tucked away in your room, extends to the expansive new clubhouse, where a high-ceilinged bar area with blond wood creates an inviting space for dining and drinking, and several hideaway rooms allow for more private diners with just your group. So far, their commitment to hospitality has been helping them expand in both membership and club usage in the increasingly competitive market for traveling golfers. Major players such as Bandon Dunes, Pinehurst Resort, and the Cabot Collection have created — or renovated — a new paradigm where golfers get dining and lodging that’s as showcase-worthy as the courses they play. Comfortable sheets and options beyond pub food aren’t luxuries anymore, but staples for many group trips. Dormie has answered that call by focusing on both the big details and the small ones, like having the dew wiped off each golf cart at dawn outside guest cottages before the day begins or having a tray of cocktails delivered to golfers as their final putt falls on the 18th green. These touches may seem over-the-top, but they stand out in a world where golf travel is increasingly popular — and expensive — after the pandemic lockdowns. Since 2020 there has been an explosion in participation in the sport, with new golfers picking up the game and avid golfers playing more: According to the National Golf Foundation, a record 531 million rounds were played in 2023, surpassing the high of 529 million set in 2021. Supreme Golf, a public golf booking website, reports in its latest analysis that the average cost of a tee time has increased to $49 in 2024 from $38 in 2019, a 30% increase. Those cost increases are also on par (pun intended) with the costs of private clubs and initiation fees during that same period, where membership rosters that were dwindling pre-COVID now have waitlists 50 to 60 people deep, according to Jason Becker, co-founder and chief executive officer of Golf Life Navigators, which matches homebuyers with golf course communities. “There’s been an absolute run on private golf. If we use southwest Florida as an example, where there are 158 golf communities, this time last November, only five had memberships available,” he said. That inability to find a club close to home has pushed avid golfers to look farther afield, choosing national memberships at clubs that require traveling, usually via plane, to play. Dormie has capitalized on this growing segment, offering two types of memberships: First, a national membership, where members pay an initiation fee and monthly dues just as they would at a local club, but instead of one club they have access to seven. The second option is a signature membership for companies, “which allows businesses to use our properties for entertainment needs and requires a multiyear commitment,” Peed says. The network also offers a limited number of regional memberships for those living within a certain distance of one of its clubs. Dormie Network declined to provide the cost of memberships or monthly dues and wouldn’t give membership numbers, but the clubs are structured to lodge roughly 60 golfers, max, on-site at any given property at any time. The total number of beds across the network’s portfolio of properties has increased from 84 in 2019 to 432 today. It saw a jump from 10,000 room nights in 2019 to 48,000 in 2023. This September, Dormie opened GrayBull in Maxwell, in Nebraska’s, Sandhills region. Dormie Network tabbed David McLay Kidd to build the course, who also built the original course at Oregon’s famed Bandon Dunes. Kidd says of the property GrayBull sits on, “It’s like the Goldilocks thing: not too flat, not too steep. It’s kind of in a bowl that looks inwards, and there are no bad views.” That kind of remote destination, where the long-range views are only Mother Nature or other golf holes, is what drives many traveling golfers these days. To me, mods represent some of the best work happening in video games. I don’t just say this because these additions have allowed me to introduce anime boys to Stardew Valley or put Margaret Thatcher’s grave in Skyrim , but because modding has become a central part of gaming culture and development. In some cases, these fan-made add-ons can make a game playable or introduce vital quality-of-life fixes for major AAA titles . Other times, a mod can change a game so that its romance system, gender markers, or character design options are more inclusive. If you can imagine a change in a game, it’s possible a mod could bring it to life. Modders — who are developers in their own right — have worked on games like Stardew Valley’ s 1.6 update and Starfield . So why don’t they get their due at The Game Awards ? Fan-made work — which modding falls into — used to have an award category at The Game Awards. Called “Best Fan Creation,” this accolade ran from 2014 to 2016. Why does it no longer exist? Polygon reached out to Game Awards creator and host Geoff Keighley and we have yet to hear back from him, but here’s what we do know: Keighley ran into some trouble the final year the award ran. In 2016, Keighley announced the nominations for “Best Fan Creation,” and they included two projects that used Nintendo IP: a Metroid fan project called AM2R and Pokémon Uranium . Initially, fans celebrated the inclusion of these ambitious fan-run projects. However, in the end, Keighley cut both nominations from the final show without giving any comment as to why. Since then, there has been no similar category. Polygon reached out to Nintendo for comment and will update this story when we hear back. The idea that Nintendo intimidated Keighley out of celebrating fan creations isn’t entirely out of the question. The renowned Japanese developer and publisher has cultivated a reputation of being extremely litigious when it comes to fan-made projects and mods of its games. Nintendo’s legal team has issued widespread DMCA takedowns on modding sites and has even taken action against YouTubers who use modded Nintendo games in streams. Looking back, the idea that leadership at Nintendo would let an award show platform fan work does seem almost laughable. But now we’re left with the current unfortunate circumstances. The Game Awards now excludes all the stellar — and completely legal — work that’s happening in the larger game modding scene. Today, we have to make do with the nebulous category of “Best Community Support,” which appears to focus on the community managers of teams rather than the fan communities themselves. There are plenty of developers and publishers that do support modding. Bethesda Softworks doesn’t just approve the use of mods in its games, but has even attempted to monetize modders’ work with the Creation Club . Modding often plays such a central role in the legacy of Bethesda’s games that it’s a running joke within the community that the developers may release rougher games with the understanding that modders will go and fix all the main problems themselves . Bethesda isn’t alone in its support for modding. In the case of Baldur’s Gate 3 — which won the coveted Game of the Year Award in 2023 — the team at Larian Studios updated the game so that it’s as easy to edit and add new content as possible. With Stardew Valley , creator Eric Barone has not only worked to make the game as amenable as possible to modding, but hired some of these creators as developers on his team for later updates. While it might be difficult to navigate which kinds of modding work are or aren’t OK to recognize on a national platform, I think it’ll only get harder for Keighley to ignore the fan-made parts of the game development sphere. The initial buzz of the “ metaverse ” might sound like a dull hum two years after tech CEOs and game developers popularized the term, but user-generated content continues to play a major role in the larger gaming industry. This year, Epic Games tinkered with fan-made Fall Guys maps, and Roblox’s Dress to Impress — while not a fan game — was made for the YouTube-like platform and became a viral hit that brought new audiences to Roblox. User-generated content is pretty trendy right now, but there is also a practical reason to recognize modders: It’s hard work. This year, Barone released the most modder-friendly version of Stardew Valley , and what I witnessed of its modding community was nothing short of incredible. I spoke to people who distributed and shared detailed documentation, teachers who could mentor new developers, and community members who managed Discord servers with hundreds of active users. To me, these kinds of efforts genuinely encapsulate some of the best and brightest work happening in games — something that Keighley seems to be all about. So while I understand why an award category like “Best Legally Sanctioned Fan Made Creation” might be a bit wordy, it would definitely be worth it to give these creators the recognition they deserve. The president-elect wrote that he would direct the department to pursue the death penalty “as soon as I am inaugurated,” but was vague on what specific actions he may take and said they would be in cases of “violent rapists, murderers, and monsters.” He highlighted the cases of two men who were on federal death row for slaying a woman and a girl, had admitted to killing more and had their sentences commuted by Biden. On the campaign trail, Trump often called for expanding the federal death penalty — including for those who kill police officers, those convicted of drug and human trafficking, and migrants who kill U.S. citizens. “Trump has been fairly consistent in wanting to sort of say that he thinks the death penalty is an important tool and he wants to use it,” said Douglas Berman, an expert on sentencing at Ohio State University’s law school. “But whether practically any of that can happen, either under existing law or other laws, is a heavy lift.” Berman said Trump’s statement at this point seems to be just a response to Biden’s commutation. “I’m inclined to think it’s still in sort of more the rhetoric phase. Just, ‘don’t worry. The new sheriff is coming. I like the death penalty,’” he said. Most Americans have historically supported the death penalty for people convicted of murder, according to decades of annual polling by Gallup, but support has declined over the past few decades. About half of Americans were in favor in an October poll, while roughly 7 in 10 Americans backed capital punishment for murderers in 2007. Before Biden's commutation, there were 40 federal death row inmates compared with more than 2,000 who have been sentenced to death by states. “The reality is all of these crimes are typically handled by the states,” Berman said. A question is whether the Trump administration would try to take over some state murder cases, such as those related to drug trafficking or smuggling. He could also attempt to take cases from states that have abolished the death penalty. Berman said Trump's statement, along with some recent actions by states, may present an effort to get the Supreme Court to reconsider a precedent that considers the death penalty disproportionate punishment for rape. “That would literally take decades to unfold. It’s not something that is going to happen overnight,” Berman said. Before one of Trump's rallies on Aug. 20, his prepared remarks released to the media said he would announce he would ask for the death penalty for child rapists and child traffickers. But Trump never delivered the line. One of the men Trump highlighted on Tuesday was ex-Marine Jorge Avila Torrez, who was sentenced to death for killing a sailor in Virginia and later pleaded guilty to the fatal stabbing of an 8-year-old and a 9-year-old girl in a suburban Chicago park several years before. The other man, Thomas Steven Sanders, was sentenced to death for the kidnapping and slaying of a 12-year-old girl in Louisiana, days after shooting the girl's mother in a wildlife park in Arizona. Court records show he admitted to both killings. Some families of victims expressed anger with Biden's decision, but the president had faced pressure from advocacy groups urging him to make it more difficult for Trump to increase the use of capital punishment for federal inmates. The ACLU and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops were some of the groups that applauded the decision. Biden left three federal inmates to face execution. The Q&A has been edited for length and clarity. QUESTION: What are the biggest issues you hear from parents about technology, anything new that hasn't been talked about as much? I'm not sure it hasn't been talked about, but what I hear the most from parents is that they are extremely stressed about the ubiquity of technology in their children's lives and they don't know what to do about it. Whether it's the massive social pressure to get kids their own phones, or the fact that kindergartners are handed tablets on their first day of school, it can feel almost impossible for parents to do what they intrinsically know is better for their kids—which is to be outside in the world as much as possible and not parked in front of a screen. But parents cannot possibly bear the entire responsibility of keeping children off screens and keeping them safe online because the problems are baked into society and into the design of the products. Parents and kids face a polycrisis—multiple crises happening at the same time which creates an effect even more devastating than each one would be individually. At a time when children should be building their social skills and attention span, they are increasingly interacting with the world through technology that can impede the development of both—and on platforms without adequate safeguards. Social media companies relentlessly target our kids with hidden algorithms that exploit their emotions for profit, and I don't think there's a real understanding of just how pervasive that exploitation is. Q: Is Australia's ban on social media for kids under 16 the right move by a government? Why/why not? Australia's social media ban for children under 16 puts the responsibility of compliance where it should be—on tech platforms, not parents. With more than half of teenagers spending nearly five hours a day on social media platforms and our heart-breaking national youth mental health crisis , it's unconscionable that governments around the world, including here in the U.S., have failed to pass meaningful social media regulation since the days when AOL still distributed CD-ROMs by snail mail. Much like the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) would do here in the U.S, Australia's ban represents a crucial first break in the long-standing logjam on any type of internet regulation and I applaud Australia's legislators and Prime Minister Albanese for having the courage to stand up to Big Tech. Big Tech is personalizing content to pull our kids into a world where addiction, anxiety, and even depression are side effects. To keep them on the app longer, children are shown more and more extreme content, leveraging the mountains of data they are collecting on our kids, with no common-sense safeguards or basic protections every parent expects. They are making billions while having the nerve to say it's the parents ' job to make their products safe for our kids? It's time for governments to step in and force Beg Tech to take responsibility for the effects of their products. Big Tech has spent more than $51 million this year alone to prevent KOSA from passing. Q: What are the reasons that teens should wait until 16 to be on social media? A: Today's youth spend nearly 9 hours on screens daily and it's not healthy or safe for their hearts and minds. For example, Meta in September acknowledged taking action on 12 million pieces of suicide and self-harm content on Facebook and Instagram this year—just between April and June. Our kids' compulsion to check their phones is exposing them to unsafe content and displacing critical, real-world experiences they need to properly develop socially, emotionally and academically. Q: Won't kids just get around the restrictions, as they always do? A: Every other industry is safeguarded. From toys to food to buildings to cars, we have regulations in place to keep children safe. Why should social media products be any different? Kids may try to get around the restrictions—just like they do for alcohol, tobacco or drugs—but nobody is saying that because they try, we should give them unfettered access to them. Parents cannot possibly bear the entire responsibility of keeping children safe online, because the problems are baked into the design of the products, and so we need policies that hold Big Tech accountable for ensuring their products are safe. Q: What is your ultimate goal with MAMA? A: Just like Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the genesis of this movement is fury and anger at the injustice of young people being robbed of their lives just because they happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. I want to direct that energy into cultural change —we can't continue to tout the benefits of technology without having an open and real-time discussion about its significant, and widespread harms and without ensuring that powerful corporations, just like Big Tobacco, are forced to make their products as safe as possible for humans. The Bell Capital Cup continued Saturday with even more teams making their debut appearances. The U13 AA Karawanken Bears from Austria were on the ice at the Nepean Sportsplex early Saturday morning. The team also consists of players from Slovenia and Croatia. It was a full-day trip for the players and their parents, who came out in support, but for Skyler Furey, the trip isn't unfamiliar. Furey's parents were both born in Canada but now live in Austria where he also resides. While his parents were unable to make the trip to Ottawa, his grandfather, who lives in the city, was at the game supporting him. "It's nice to come back to Canada once in a while," Furey said. "We battled really good and it was a tough game." The Bears defeated the Cumberland Jr. Grads 5-3. A few hours later, the Greater Bay Tigers stepped onto the ice. The team consisting of players from Hong Kong, Southern China and Taiwan, got their first taste of action in the tournament. Most of the players arrived in the city days before the event due to travel times. Tigers owner Gregory Smyth says he cherishes being able to come back to Canada and see his team competing against the best. "It's an eye opener, to see how good the hockey is," Smyth said. "We're competitive too, and I think that's probably an eye opener for some of the local teams here as well because these kids can skate, shoot and pass. They did well today." Smyth says the team has enjoyed the festivities during the opening ceremonies at Hockey Fest and are treating the boys to a couple of World Junior games in the city, including Canada versus the United States on New Years Eve. More international teams also got underway today including many from the United States and the defending Division A champions from Slovenia, who played a friendly game in Rockland. Brenda Suddeth began fostering and rescuing animals with the Humane Society of Cherokee County, where she volunteered for over 15 years. At the time, HSCC had limited space for cats, and she decided to take on the responsibility of rescuing cats and kittens, including getting them spayed and neutered and socializing them. This led her to get a rescue license from the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture. “I was called one cat and one dog short of crazy,” Suddeth said. Despite a breast cancer diagnosis, she never stopped caring for animals, but she had to slow down during her treatment. Now in remission, Suddeth continues her efforts, but she now takes on more of a “networking” role, connecting people to other rescues or individuals who can help animals. “I get a lot of cruelty calls, about animals that need help,” Suddeth said. “And I have a page on Facebook, where people will reach out.” She does not work alone, but has several friends and a handful of volunteers who help her. “I would get a load of puppies, foster them, and find a rescue to adopt the puppies out,” Suddeth said. Suddeth said she used to help transport animals to metropolitan cities like Tulsa or Oklahoma City, or even sometimes to other states, like Kansas. Now, she lets other volunteers handle the long drives, while she makes arrangements. “It’s really getting hard now to get animals moved,” Suddeth said. “I get on Facebook, I network, and get ahold of rescues, and help arrange transport for them.” Another way Suddeth uses social media is to help individuals in emergencies find food or other supplies they may need for their animals. She said some may need help with vet costs. “A lot of people will donate to fund these efforts,” Suddeth said. She described the rescue work as like having a job she doesn’t get paid for. “Sometimes I get 15 calls a day, and that will mean I spend all day on my phone trying to find help for those animals,” she said. In addition to cats and dogs, Suddeth said she’s also received calls about horses, and she said she does the best she can. Throughout the winter season, Suddeth said, she receives donations of doghouses she is able to give out to those in need. She also gives out flea and tick medication for dogs all year. Suddeth said she has rescued over 60 cats and fostered over 40 puppies in her 22 years of rescue work. Many cats still live in her home, where she has a cat room, and an enclosed “catio” for them. “They are like kids. They make messes and knock stuff over,” Suddeth said. “I raised six kids, and they are like raising kids all over again.” Outside of her rescue work, Suddeth said, she enjoys shopping at thrift stores. “I just like to look at stuff, and see what other people have discarded,” she said.

Rodgers acknowledged he has “a little MCL” issue in a knee, but added: “I've had a lot worse. I lucked out.
