Blue Jays remain in the running to sign 4-time All-Star free agent | Sporting NewsVancouver-based bookkeeping service Bench Accounting has announced its sudden closure, potentially putting hundreds of staff out of work. The company that has described itself as North America’s largest bookkeeping service for small businesses says on its website in a “notice of closure” dated Friday that the platform is “no longer accessible.” The statement acknowledges that the closure is “abrupt and may cause disruption,” and says the firm is committed to helping customers “navigate through the transition.” Bench has previously said it had more than 600 employees and had received investor funding of US$113 million. It said it moved to Vancouver and changed its name to Bench in 2013, having started out in 2012 as 10sheet Inc in the U.S. Calls to Bench’s Vancouver office went to voice mail and did not immediately receive a response. But the company’s former CEO and co-founder Ian Crosby released a statement on social media on Friday, saying he was “very sad” about the closure. Crosby, who said he was ousted by the company’s board about three years ago, said there was a lesson in the fate of the company. “I hope the story of Bench goes on to become a warning for VCs (venture capitalists) that think they can ‘upgrade’ a company by replacing the founder. It never works,” he said. The University of British Columbia Sauder Business School alumni said he had been avoiding speaking publicly about Bench since his exit, but wanted to make a statement in light of the company’s demise. He said that in 2021 he had been battling with some board members over their strategy for a “new direction” that he thought was a “very bad idea.” Rather than continuing to fight with me, they opted to just replace me, thinking that they could run the company better themselves,” he said. “I was totally convinced that their approach would destroy the company. I opted to resign rather than fight.” Other bookkeeping companies were quick to reach out to Bench’s former clients, with rivals such as Acuity and Better Bookkeeping making reference to Bench’s closure in social media pitches. A spokeswoman for B.C.’s jobs ministry said they were looking into a request for comment. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 27, 2024.

Allegheny County Council member Dan Grzybek will introduce a compromise tax-hike proposal Tuesday — one meant to bridge the gap between County Executive Sara Innamorato’s spending plan and a budget with a smaller hike put forward by council. Grzybek’s plan would raise the county millage rate to about 6.39 mills — 1.66 mills more than residents currently pay, or a 35% increase. It would represent an increase over a 1.35 mill proposal introduced by John Palmierie and other council members last week, but is still less than the 2.2 mill increase Innamorato says is necessary to fully fund county services. “I tried to meet in the middle between the 1.35 budget and the county executive’s 2.2 mill budget,” which is “just not going to get the ten votes necessary to pass,” Grzybek said. There was “a lot of confusion” about Palmierie’s proposal, Grzybek said, and a tight timeline left little time for members to discuss the plan or for county budget experts to weigh in. He floated his plan to council members last Wednesday, after consulting with county budget experts. Supporters of Palmieri's proposal contended that a 1.35 mill increase would avert layoffs and service cuts. But “It was pretty immediately clear to me that [the claim] was not going to be true” after rising personnel costs were factored in, Grzybek said. When those costs — which include cost-of-living increases and — were calculated, Grzybek estimated Palmierie’s plan would require officials to dismiss 20 county employees and cut 75 currently vacant positions. Those numbers represent just a small fraction of the county’s more than 6,000 employees. But Grzybek said those jobs should be preserved to maintain county functions. “I tried to make sure that we were cutting the millage as low as humanly possible to make sure that we were limiting the cost on taxpayers ... while making sure that we were fully providing the services that the county has been providing,” Grzybek said. Grzybek’s plan would give $4 million to the county’s Department of Human Services, allowing officials to take advantage of state and federal funding matches that will bring in another $16 million for the department. It would also restore funding to the Allegheny County Police Department and sheriff’s office — spending cut under the 1.35 mill plan — to bring the departments back in line with Innamorato’s initial proposal. Grzybek said the change will allow county police to hire five officers currently in training and keep 12 sheriff’s deputy positions open. Grzybek’s plan still represents nearly $30 million in spending reductions from Innamorato’s proposal. Much of that reduction comes from scaling back plans to replenish the county’s “rainy day” fund, which the county has drawn on to make up for deficits in recent years. Innamorato’s budget calls for $33 million to be paid back into it; Palmierie’s plan would use just $5 million for that purpose, while Grzybek’s plan suggests $20 million. Grzybek’s proposal, like Palmierie’s, would also keep the homestead exemption at $18,000. Innamorato had proposed a more generous exemption that would leave the first $21,000 of a home’s assessed value untaxed. The homestead exemption has not changed since 2013. Under Grzybek’s plan, the owner of a home assessed at the county’s median value, $110,400, would pay about $590 in property taxes each year, or roughly $12.75 more each month than they currently pay. Under Palmierie’s proposal, the same homeowner would pay about $10 more each month, and under Innamorato’s plan, they would pay about $15 more each month after taking the increased homestead exemption. “For what is a relatively limited cost, I do believe that we're getting a good amount out of” a proposed 1.66 mill increase, Grzybek said. Innamorato administration officials said they agree in principle with Grzybek’s proposal, and added that his proposed millage rate is closer to where they believe the county will end up. But it’s not yet clear if Grzybek’s proposal has the two-thirds supermajority of support required by the Home Rule Charter to approve any change to real estate tax rates, either. Officials indicated other proposals could be introduced before Tuesday’s vote. Council is slated to discuss all three proposals at their Dec. 3 meeting. County law requires annual operating and capital budgets for the next calendar year to be adopted no later than Dec. 6.Food and agriculture will not be on the table in any trade deal talks with US, says Business SecretaryBill Clinton Says He Isn't Surprised Donald Trump Won The Election
Greg Gumbel, a longtime CBS sportscaster, has died from cancer, according to a statement from family released by CBS on Friday. He was 78. “He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten,” his wife Marcy Gumbel and daughter Michelle Gumbel said in a statement. In March, Gumbel missed his first NCAA Tournament since 1997 due to what he said at the time were family health issues. Gumbel was the studio since returning to the network from NBC in 1998. Gumbel signed an extension with CBS last year that allowed him to continue hosting college basketball while stepping back from NFL announcing duties. In 2001, he announced Super Bowl XXXV for CBS, becoming the first Black announcer in the U.S. to call play-by-play of a major sports championship. David Berson, president and CEO of CBS Sports, described Gumbel as breaking barriers and setting standards for others during his years as a voice for fans in sports, including in the NFL and “A tremendous broadcaster and gifted storyteller, Greg led one of the most remarkable and groundbreaking sports broadcasting careers of all time," said Berson. Gumbel had two stints at CBS, leaving the network for NBC when it lost football in 1994 and returning when it regained the contract in 1998. He hosted CBS’ coverage of the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics and called Major League Baseball games during its four-year run broadcasting the national pastime. In 1995, he hosted the World Figure Skating Championships and the following year hosted NBC’s daytime coverage of the Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta. But it was football and basketball where he was best known and made his biggest impact. Gumbel hosted CBS’ NFL studio show, “The NFL Today” from 1990 to 1993 and again in 2004. He also called NFL games as the network’s lead play-by-play announcer from 1998 to 2003, including Super Bowl XXXV and XXXVIII. He returned to the NFL booth in 2005, leaving that role after the 2022 season. “Like all who knew and loved him, I too am saddened by his death, yet also so very grateful to have known him in my life,” Clark Kellogg, a CBS Sports college basketball game and studio analyst, said in a statement. “What a gift to be touched by such a good man and partner.” Gumbel, the older brother of sportscaster Bryant Gumbel, grew up in Chicago and graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1967 with a degree in English. He won local Emmy Awards during his long career and was the recipient of the 2007 Pat Summerall Award for excellence in sports broadcasting. Outside of his career as a sportscaster, he was affiliated with the March of Dimes for three decades, including as a member of its board of trustees. He also was a member of the Sports Council for St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital for 16 years. Associated Press reporter Mike Sisak contributed.
North Korean hackers aren’t giving up on their fake job scams, it seems, as experts found they have added more variants, diversifying the tools used in the campaign that’s now almost three years old. Cybersecurity researchers from NTT Security Japan revealed a North Korean threat actor engaged in a campaign dubbed “Contagious Interview”. The campaign has been extensively covered by multiple researchers, and most media. The crooks would create a fake job opening, as well as a number of fake social media accounts. Then, they would target software developers, or other high-profile individuals (such as people working in the aerospace, defense, or government sectors), and offer exciting and lucrative new job opportunities. OtterCookie The campaign was first spotted in 2022, and is believed to be operated by Lazarus Group - a known state-sponsored threat actor from North Korea. In the latest report, NTT Security Japan claims to have seen the group deploying more than the usual malware variants - BeaverTail and InvisibleFerret. This time, they’re using malware called OtterCookie. This one is capable of reconnaissance (grabbing system information, for example), data theft (cryptocurrency wallet keys, images, documents, and other high-value files), and clipboard poisoning. Lazarus is known for targeting primarily web3 (blockchain) businesses, and stealing cryptocurrency. The novel technology is valuable for the criminals, since the stolen money is almost impossible to recover. This group was seen targeting multiple businesses in the past, running away with hundreds of millions of dollars in different cryptos. It is also best known for running fake job campaigns, targeting not just businesses, but also individual software developers. Its operatives were observed creating fake personas and applying for positions, but also using the fake identities to approach professionals. In all scenarios, the crooks would try to deploy infostealing malware and grab their sensitive data.None
Jimmy Carter, the 39th U.S. president, has died at 100Rugby Don't miss out on the headlines from Rugby. Followed categories will be added to My News. All Blacks legend TJ Perenara has come clean on his decision to use his final haka for New Zealand to make a big statement on the nation’s controversial Treaty Principles Bill. The 89-cap player, who represented New Zealand for the final time in the match after signing a three-year deal with Japanese rugby team Black Rams Tokyo, led the haka for the 64th time before the All Blacks’ 29-11 win over Italy on the weekend. Watch selected NRL, AFL, SSN games plus every F1 qualifying session and race live in 4K on Kayo. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer. Perenara launched into an impassioned haka, stating: “toitū te mana o te whenua, toitū te mana motuhake, toitū te tiriti o Waitangi.” That translates to “forever the strength of the land, forever the strength of independence, forever the Treaty of Waitangi.” Saturday’s haka has made waves. Photo by Francesco Scaccianoce/Getty Images The Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 and brought peace between the Maori and European settlers and established New Zealand as a colony. February 6, the anniversary of the signing, is known as Waitangi Day and is New Zealand’s national day. But the right-libertarian ACT Party, who are part of a coalition with the National Party and New Zealand First to form government, have tabled the Treaty Principles Bill, which aims to redefine the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. The bill aims to offer New Zealanders a binding referendum seeking to more narrowly define the treaty’s principles in legal documents, with ACT leader David Seymour telling parliament it would address a situation where Maori are “afforded different rights than other New Zealanders”. Critics say the real aim is to unravel education and other programs for Maori citizens. Mr Seymour said the bill was a good thing and would be a “democratisation of the Treaty”. Maori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi previously accused the government of “waging war on our existence as Maori and on the fabric of this nation” and compared ACT Party to the KKK. The bill has been controversial to say the least with an estimated 42,000 demonstrators marching on the nation’s capital of Wellington to protest the bill. Around 40,000 protesters marched on Wellington. Photo by Joe Allison/Getty Images The bill is expected to fail, with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon allowing the bill to come to parliament as part of the parties’ coalition deal, but his party is believed to be unlikely to vote for its passage. Mr Luxon recently called the bill “divisive” and there was “no need for it”, while the opposition Labour Party called it “a waste of money” with “no support from any other party in parliament”. Speaking after the match against Italy, Perenara said the first line he had spoken had meant “this haka is for everyone in Aotearoa”, revealing his intent was to unite the country back home. “We’ve been away from home and seen the unity and the unification of our people back home, all people of Aotearoa and paying homage to us as people, and showing unification together as one,” Perenara said. “And like we, countries go through tough times. People go through tough times, families go through tough times. “And for us to pay homage to the unification of all of us is something that wanted to do and that we wanted to do, which was important.” However, questions were also asked after the Waitangi chant was kept off the All Blacks social media accounts. See in the video player above. The Aoteroa Liberation League tweeted: “All Blacks are erasing the beginning of this haka where TJ says “toitū te mana o te whenua, toitū te mana motuhake, toitū Te Tiriti o Waitangi” – a great example of how corporations are happy to commercialise te ao Māori while erasing Māori political aspirations.” Perenara said he didn’t intend the haka to be political or divisive. “Stand and pay respect to our whenua (country), which is our whenua, mana motuhake, which is our sovereignty, everyone’s sovereignty,” Perenara explained. “Te Tiriti o Waitangi, stand tall, stand proud and stand on Te Tiriti o Waitangi. So uniting us all as people. “I know some people might see or try and make it political or divisive, but for us, unity and being together is important, especially as Maori.” All Blacks skipper Scott Barrett said the team were aware and supportive of Perenara’s plan. “As the leader, they get the opportunity to say something,” Barrett explained. “He said he was going to lead, and say a wee mihi. It was a message of unity, and that’s what he said.” It’s the last time Perenara will lead the haka for the All Blacks. Photo by Dave Rowland/Getty Images All Blacks coach Scott Robertson said Perenara had discussed his haka plan before the match. “TJ when he got the right to call (the haka), there’s a part of it at the start he gets in his own words to call it,” Robertson told reporters. “And he’s decided to say that and he has done it with the aspect of unity. It’s his right to say that.” “He said it’s sign of unity. Everyone is across it. He gets his chance to call that and the rest of the team gets to do the haka.” But the move has been criticised as well with Mr Seymour questioning why Perenara was against the bill. “I congratulate TJ on his long All Blacks career and wish him well in Japan,” Mr Seymour said. “I hope he reads the bill at treaty.nz. It says that we all have nga tikanga katoa rite tahi – the same rights and duties. And all New Zealanders have tino rangatiratanga, the right to self-determine, not only Māori. “The challenge for people who oppose this bill is to explain why they are so opposed to those basic principles of equal rights.” More Coverage Aussie sevens star crowned world’s best Martin Gabor ‘Numb arm’: Wallabies’ nervous wait on $5m man Originally published as ‘Message of unity’: New Zealand divided over All Blacks’ haka detail Join the conversation Add your comment to this story To join the conversation, please log in. Read morePublished 2:48 pm Monday, November 25, 2024 By Associated Press WASHINGTON — Special counsel Jack Smith moved to abandon two criminal cases against Donald Trump on Monday, acknowledging that Trump’s return to the White House will preclude attempts to federally prosecute him for retaining classified documents or trying to overturn his 2020 election defeat. The decision was inevitable, since longstanding Justice Department policy says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution. Yet it was still a momentous finale to an unprecedented chapter in political and law enforcement history, as federal officials attempted to hold accountable a former president while he was simultaneously running for another term. In court filings, Smith’s team emphasized that the move to abandon their prosecutions was not a reflection of the merit of the cases but a recognition of the legal shield that surrounds any commander in chief. “That prohibition is categorical and does not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the Government’s proof, or the merits of the prosecution, which the Government stands fully behind,” the prosecutors wrote in one of their filings. Smith’s team said it was leaving intact charges against two co-defendants in the classified documents case — Trump valet Walt Nauta and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira — because “no principle of temporary immunity applies to them.” Steven Cheung, Trump’s incoming White House communications director, welcomed the decision to drop the prosecutions against the president-elect, describing it as a “major victory for the rule of law.” “The American People and President Trump want an immediate end to the political weaponization of our justice system and we look forward to uniting our country,” Cheung said in a statement. Trump has long described the investigations as politically motivated, and he has vowed to fire Smith as soon as he takes office in January. Now he will re-enter the White House free from criminal scrutiny by the government that he will lead. The election case brought last year was once seen as one of the most serious legal threats facing Trump as he tried to reclaim the White House. He was indicted for plotting to overturn his defeat to Joe Biden in 2020, an effort that climaxed with his supporters’ violent attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. But the case quickly stalled amid legal fighting over Trump’s sweeping claims of immunity from prosecution for acts he took while in the White House. The U.S. Supreme Court in July ruled for the first time that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution, and sent the case back to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan to determine which allegations in the indictment, if any, could proceed to trial. The case was just beginning to pick up steam again in the trial court in the weeks leading up to this year’s election. Smith’s team in October filed a lengthy brief laying out new evidence they planned to use against him at trial, accusing him of “resorting to crimes” in an increasingly desperate effort to overturn the will of voters after he lost to Biden. The separate case involving classified documents had been widely seen as legally clear cut, especially because the conduct in question occurred after Trump left the White House and lost the powers of the presidency. The indictment included dozens of felony counts accusing him of illegally hoarding classified records from his presidency at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, and obstructing federal efforts to get them back. He has pleaded not guilty and denied wrongdoing. The case quickly became snarled by delays, with U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon slow to issue rulings — which favored Trump’s strategy of pushing off deadlines in all his criminal cases — while also entertaining defense motions and arguments that experts said other judges would have dispensed with without hearings. In May, she indefinitely canceled the trial date amid a series of unresolved legal issues before dismissing the case outright two months later. Smith’s team appealed the decision, but now has given up that effort.

user found an odd serial number on her breadstick - and the chain paid up for the mistake. In a recent video posted on , the user shared a photo of one of the chain restaurant’s famous unlimited breadsticks. “Guys why is there letters on my Olive Garden breadstick,” text across the screen read. The photo showed a half-eaten breadstick with parts of a serial number printed across it as if the TikTok user didn’t discover the number until after they started eating. The video went on to receive over four million views after first being posted on November 17. Many people were quick to turn to the comments to express their concerns or provide an explanation for why there would be various numbers and letters printed on the breadstick. “They’re from frozen bags so the label must’ve like gotten on that one,” one commenter suggested. Another commenter, who claimed to be someone who worked at Olive Garden, wrote, “It’s from the plastic bag they come in, and when they sit in the freezer for a while, that can happen.” The restaurant also left a comment telling TikToker to contact their customer service department immediately. “We are concerned to see this. Can you please send an email to social@olivegarden.com with your full name and the location you went to?” the comment read. Lee was reviewing FOB Sushi Bar in Seattle, Washington, when he applauded the “unique way” the food was being prepared. He then got into his car and began eating a box of nigiri and sashimi while he rated it on a scale from one to 10. At the 1:50 minute mark, however, he picked up a piece of sashimi with his chopsticks, only for fans to point out what appeared to be a “worm” moving on it just seconds before he put it in his mouth. Enough fans commented on the food, prompting the restaurant to issue a response. They posted their statement on Instagram that read: “The movement observed in the fish may result from natural elasticity or the pressure of chopsticks when applied to its structure.” “Rumors like this can harm small businesses, so we’re addressing it head-on. Thank you for trusting us and supporting FOB Sushi,” they captioned the post. The sushi restaurant has since closed indefinitely after Lee posted a follow-up video revealing that another customer was hospitalized after eating FOB sushi’s food. “I don’t believe in tearing down any business but at the same time, people’s health are on the line. If somebody’s saying they’re in the hospital and there’s something’s moving in food, I absolutely think there’s accountability that should be taken,” Lee said.Irv Wilson Dies; Prolific Producer In Golden Era Of TV Movies Was 93
