Aaron Rodgers' days with the Jets could be numbered. On Saturday, NFL insider Dianna Russini reported , "It appears increasingly likely that the four-time MVP, who is banged up, could be placed on injured reserve or possibly benched over the next few weeks. "Some around the league say they won't be surprised if Rodgers is cut in-season," Russini added. (h/t The Athletic) Russini also noted that her "understanding is that Rodgers still wants to play in 2025, just not for the New York Jets." A split would be mutually beneficial, and despite a disappointing 2024 season and having failed to make the playoffs since 2021, Rodgers could still be attractive to QB-needy teams. Here are three potential destinations for the Super Bowl XLV MVP next season: Las Vegas Raiders Rodgers and wide receiver Davante Adams, who was traded from the Raiders to the Jets earlier this season, could trade places. Maybe Adams could give Rodgers, his eight-year Packers teammate, a deal on his $11.4 million Las Vegas mansion . The Raiders (2-8) have struggled to replace former quarterback Derek Carr the past two years, and Gardner Minshew, Aidan O'Connell and Desmond Ridder have all received playing time this season. They've combined to go 241-of-362 (66.6 percent) for 2,098 yards (6.4 yards per attempt), 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Rookie tight end Brock Bowers is a budding star. He has 70 receptions, 703 yards and four touchdowns this season. Underrated wide receiver Jakobi Meyers is also signed through 2025. Per Pro Football Focus data , he's one of four wide receivers with at least 55 targets who haven't been credited with a drop. His 71.4 percent contested catch rate is the second-highest among qualifying players, only trailing Commanders wideout Terry McLaurin. Cleveland Browns The Browns are probably stuck with quarterback Deshaun Watson. Spotrac shared his untenable dead cap hits for the next few seasons, which includes a $118.9 million dead cap hit in 2025 if released following the 2024 season. For the "just cut Deshaun now" crowd: 2024 Dead Cap: $119,942,678 ($93.2M cash) 2025 Dead Cap: $80,770,000 For the "cut Deshaun after 2024" crowd: 2025 Dead Cap: $118,935,000 ($92M cash) 2026 Dead Cap: $53,835,000 For the "cut Deshaun after 2025" crowd: 2026 Dead Cap:... But Watson was one of the league's worst quarterbacks before suffering a season-ending ACL injury (Weeks 1-7), while backup Jameis Winston has made them more competitive, going 2-2 in his two starts. Cleveland averaged 15.6 points and 253.9 yards per game in the first seven games. Over its last four, it has averaged 19.3 points and 360 yards per game. The organization might not rid itself of Watson, but that doesn't mean it has to start him. The Browns would only be able to offer Rodgers backup money, but that's about what he's worth at this point of his career. The distractions could be astronomical, but better to contain that chaos in one franchise than allow it to infect multiple. Minnesota Vikings Rodgers could follow former Packers quarterback Brett Favre's path — although hopefully skipping forays into amateur photography and fundraising — and sign with the Vikings. Favre signed with the Vikings in August 2009 after the Jets released him that April. Injured rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy's progress from knee surgery would influence Minnesota's potential interest. McCarthy suffered his injury during the preseason and had surgery in August. On Nov. 13 , ESPN's Kevin Seifert reported McCarthy underwent a second surgery while noting "he remains on track to return for the 2025 season." The Vikings (8-2) signed 2024 starter Sam Darnold to a one-year, $10 million deal this offseason, and he might receive interest elsewhere after keeping Minnesota competitive in the NFC. If McCarthy doesn't seem like he'll be ready for the start of next season, the Vikings could do much worse than pursuing Rodgers as an insurance policy.World Champion Jennifer Ogg of London, Ont. among inductees in Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame

IN late September and early October, many middle-class communities across the country were giddily discussing one thing that was not about the usual suspects: politics, sports, entertainment or the launch of a new technology product. It was rather about a bond offering from a property developer on a hotel-building spree overseas that carried an unprecedented 8-percent return a year. A recently retired overseas Filipino worker (OFW) couple — he, in the Middle East; she, in the Czech Republic — kept gushing about the 8-percent yearly return from the bond offeror as we were swapping boars (their Anglo-Nubian for my Boer) at their farm-cum-retirement place on Oct. 1. If you were there and were observant enough, you would have known outright where the couple's giddiness was coming from. Register to read this story and more for free . VIENNA - Austria's far-right Freedom Party won a state election in Styria for the first time on Nov 24 in an echo of September's general election and a new show of strength while national coalition talks continue without it. The election in Styria on Nov 24, which is home to Austria's second city, Graz, raises pressure on party leaders currently attempting to forge the country's first three-way government since 1949. It is only the second state which the eurosceptic, Russia-friendly Freedom Party (FPO) has ever won, the first having been Carinthia, the fiefdom of then-FPO leader Joerg Haider in his heyday in the late 1990s and early 2000s. “There’s been a landslide in Styria. I didn’t expect such a resounding result,” the FPO’s deputy leader in Styria, Mr Stefan Hermann, told national broadcaster ORF. A projection by pollster Foresight for ORF and news agency APA showed the FPO first on 35 per cent and the ruling conservative People's Party (OVP) second on 26.7 per cent. The estimate, based on a count of 95 per cent of votes cast, had a margin of error of 0.4 percentage points. It is the first time since World War Two that neither the OVP nor the Social Democrats (SPO) have won in the state bordering Slovenia where actor Arnold Schwarzenegger was born. The FPO will need a coalition partner to secure a majority in Styria's state assembly and form a government. Nationally, FPO leader Herbert Kickl continues to lambast efforts to form what he calls a “coalition of losers” by the parties that came second, third and fourth in September’s election. He argues that since the FPO came first he should have been tasked with forming a government. The FPO secured 29 per cent of the vote in September's election, meaning it needed a coalition partner to govern. Mr Alexander Van der Bellen, an 80-year-old former leader of the left-wing Greens, said in October that since no other party was prepared to govern with the FPO under Mr Kickl, he had to task Chancellor Karl Nehammer of the OVP as leader of the second-placed party with forming a government. Mr Nehammer is in coalition talks with the leaders of the SPO and liberal Neos. Styria's OVP Governor Christopher Drexler said the main issue raised by voters was why Mr Van der Bellen gave Mr Nehammer rather than Mr Kickl the task of forming a government, suggesting many voters backed the FPO in protest. “National politics dominated this election,” he said in a speech to supporters. Read 3 articles and stand to win rewards Spin the wheel nowA COMPLAINT about a “rough” haircut was logged as a “hate” incident by cops. In the barmy case, the upset punter blamed an argument about Ukraine for a bad trim. Other so-called non-crime hate incidents logged by police include a German woman upset about being likened to a rottweiler. It comes as the cash-strapped Met faces axing 2,000 cops who could catch real criminals, and only opening stations from 9am-5pm. Last night Essex Police dropped a hate probe into journalist Allison Pearson over a year-old post — but only after putting her through 12 days of anguish. Meanwhile, a customer contacted cops to say his barber was “aggressive and rough” because he spoke Russian. Similar bizarre cases saw officers called over a neighbour in a hedge dispute who said it was homophobic to brand him “Leonard”. As Britain’s biggest police force faces axing 2,000 cops, Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: “The police should not waste any valuable time on incidents like this. "There is plenty of real crime they should be preventing and solving. Aggressive haircut is not a police matter “An aggressively-administered haircut is not a police matter. "The police should only spend time investigating or recording actual criminal allegations or incidents where there is a real and imminent risk of criminality subsequently occurring. “The Government needs to urgently update the guidance to ensure this is the case. “This nonsense undermines confidence in policing.” A staggering 13,000 non-crime hate incidents (NCHIs) were recorded in the year to June. These are cases where no criminal offence has been committed, but the person reporting an incident feels it was motivated by hostility or prejudice. The Lithuanian haircut “victim” claimed he was targeted because he spoke Russian. A City of London Police log of the incident, seen by The Sun, said: “Barber asked him about the present situation in Ukraine, victim stated that all conversations with the barber were fine, but he stated that the barber was aggressive and rough whilst he was cutting his hair. “The victim believes this was because he spoke Russian and is a hate incident.” Ex-Met detective Peter Bleksley said: “This is ridiculous and shows how disconnected police are from what the public want. “No wonder there is a crimewave in this country. The guidelines suggest you should only intervene in cases like this where there is fear of escalation — who ever had a fear of escalation after a bad haircut?!” It was unclear if City of London Police spoke to the hairdresser. A force spokesman said: “The report was made online and later withdrawn.” Essex Police logged 96 NCHIs in a year, including one where the “suspect has told two men to stop kissing”. Wiltshire cops investigated an incident where a person in the street said others were mocking the length of their hair. The rottweiler “racial abuse” complaint was made to Cambridgeshire Police from a woman in a parking dispute with a neighbour. A person in South Yorkshire said they were the victim of homophobic abuse in a row over a privet hedge when a neighbour called him a “Leonard”. In West Yorkshire cops recorded a case where a person with Blue Badge disabled parking claimed Facebook posts referred to her being physically active. In 2021, a man was investigated for “racial hatred” for whistling the Bob the Builder tune at his neighbour. Officers in Bedfordshire recorded it as an NCHI, which can remain on file for six years and, in some cases, be disclosed to a prospective employer. Another barmy case saw a swimming teacher in West Yorkshire probed after a mother said her son had been allowed to bang his head against the side of the pool “due to his ethnicity”. Retired Sussex Det Chief Supt Kevin Moore told The Sun: “It is no good police complaining they have insufficient resources when they are wasting valuable time recording, then potentially investigating, such ridiculous matters. “It is high time His Majesty’s Inspectorate stepped in to stop the recording of non-crime hate incidents. Either a matter is a crime or it is not. If it isn’t then police should not be involved.” Reform MP Lee Anderson added: “Our police have lost control of our streets, and now their bosses have lost control of their minds. “Police should be investigating proper crimes not people who have hurt someone’s feelings. I long for the days when we had respect for our boys in blue.” Exclusive By Mike Sullivan BRITAIN’S biggest police force is set to lose 2,000 officers as a result of swingeing budget cuts. And 400 civilian staff jobs could go as the Met slashes £450million from annual finances. Some London police stations will reduce opening hours to the public from 9am to 5pm. The 12.8 per cent reduction from this year’s £3.5billion budget is worse than “eye-watering” cuts feared by Met boss Sir Mark Rowley. Figures for the new budget are due to be announced at 11pm tonight by the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime, alongside some of the tough measures that must be taken. Matt Cane, of the Police Federation, warned: “As we have said time and again, cuts have consequences. These will clearly have a significant impact on the Met’s ability to police London.” And retired Met Chief Supt Simon Ovens warned the cuts could mean the final straw for officers considering other careers. The Met is already projected to be down to 32,750 officers by March from its operating strength of 35,415. The loss of an additional 2,000 cops during the incoming financial year from April would put the force back to 2013 levels. Sir Mark said last week he was “deeply troubled” by talks over the annual settlement. He said the capital’s spending on policing per head of population was already lower than cities such as New York and Sydney. This week Home Secretary Yvette Cooper promised a crackdown on shoplifting, phone theft and anti-social behaviour. She pledged £500million for more cops, though did not specify if the figure included inflation rises. The Met said: “We maintain a productive dialogue with the Mayor and Home Office. No final decisions have been made.”W hen Kenyan police arrived in Haiti as part of a U.N.-backed mission earlier this year to tackle gang violence, hopes were high. Coordinated gang attacks on prisons, police stations and the main international airport had crippled the country’s capital and forced the prime minister to resign, plunging Haiti into an unprecedented crisis. But the crisis has only deepened since the international policing contingent arrived. The main international airport closed for the second time this year after gangs opened fire on commercial flights in mid-November, striking a flight attendant. Gunmen also are attacking once-peaceful communities to try and seize control of the entire capital, taking advantage of political infighting that led to the abrupt dismissal of the prime minister earlier this month. Now, a new prime minister is tasked with turning around a nation that sees no escape from its troubles as Haitians wonder: How did the country reach this point? Bloody coups, brutal dictatorships and gangs created by Haiti’s political and economic elite have long defined the country’s history, but experts say the current crisis is the worst they’ve seen. “I’m very bleak about the future,” said Robert Fatton, a Haitian politics expert at the University of Virginia. “The whole situation is really collapsing.” You Might Be Interested In HAITI-Three killed, several wounded during pre-Carnival celebration REGIONAL – CARICOM calls for political parties to act responsibly in Haiti HAITI – Protests choke communities in Haiti as aid, supplies dwindle The government is anemic, the U.N.-backed mission that supports Haiti’s understaffed police department lacks funding and personnel, and gangs now control 85% of the capital. Then, on Wednesday, another blow. Doctors Without Borders announced it was suspending critical care in Port-au-Prince as it accused police of targeting its staff and patients, including threats of rape and death. It’s the first time the aid group has stopped working with new patients since it began operating in Haiti more than 30 years ago. “Every day that we cannot resume activities is a tragedy, as we are one of the few providers of a wide range of medical services that have remained open during this extremely difficult year,” said Christophe Garnier, mission director in Haiti. Lionel Lazarre, deputy spokesman for Haiti’s National Police, did not return messages for comment. Neither did officials with Kenya’s mission when asked about the surge in gang violence. In a recent statement, the Kenyan-led mission said it was “cognizant of the road ahead that is fraught with challenges.” But it noted that ongoing joint patrols and operations have secured certain communities and forced gangs to change the way they operate. Andre Francois Giroux, Canada’s ambassador to Haiti, told The Associated Press on Saturday that his country and others have been trying to bolster the Kenyan-led mission. “They’ve done miracles, I think, considering all the challenges that we’ve been facing,” he said. “What we have to keep in mind is that it’s still very much in deployment mode,” Giroux said. “There are not even 400 on the ground right now.” A spokesman for Haiti’s new prime minister, Alix Didier Fils-Aime, did not return messages for comment. In a statement Thursday, his administration said authorities were strengthening security along the capital’s main roads and had formed a special security council. “The prime minister renews his commitment to find lasting solutions to current problems,” it said. The statement was issued just days after gangs launched a pre-dawn attack Tuesday around an upper-class community in Haiti’s capital, forcing residents armed with machetes and guns to fight side-by-side with police to repel gunmen. At least 28 gang members were killed, but not before some reached an area near an upscale hotel long considered safe. “It tells you that there is no functioning authority in Haiti,” Fatton said. A main concern in the ongoing crisis is the temporary closure of the main international airport in Port-au-Prince. It means critical aid is not reaching those who need it the most in a country where nearly 6,000 people are starving and nearly half of the more than 11 million inhabitants are experiencing crisis levels of hunger or worse. Gang violence also has left more than 700,000 people homeless in recent years. “We are deeply concerned about the isolation of Port-au-Prince from the rest of Haiti and the world,” said Laurent Uwumuremyi, Mercy Corps’ country director for Haiti. The aid group helps people including more than 15,000 living in makeshift shelters, but persistent gang violence has prevented workers from reaching a growing number of them in the capital and beyond. Basic goods also are dwindling as the suspension of flights has delayed imports of critical supplies. “Before, there were some neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince that we considered safe that the gangs had never reached, but now they are threatening to take over the control of the entire capital,” Uwumuremyi said. At least 150 people were reported killed in the capital and 20,000 forced to flee their homes in the second week of November alone. Overall, more than 4,500 people were reported killed in Haiti so far this year, the U.N. said. Jimmy Cherizier, a former elite police officer who became a gang leader known as Barbecue, warned that a gang coalition known as Viv Ansanm will keep attacking as they demand the resignation of a transitional presidential council tasked with leading the country along with the new prime minister. The council also is supposed to organize general elections for the first time in nearly a decade so voters can choose a president, a position left empty since President Jovenel Moise was killed at his private residence in July 2021. The U.S. and other countries pushed for a U.N. peacekeeping mission in Haiti at a U.N. Security Council meeting this week. Only about 400 officers from Kenya have arrived, along with a handful of police and soldiers from other countries — way short of the 2,500 personnel slated for the mission. “This is not just another wave of insecurity; it is a dramatic escalation that shows no signs of abating,” Miroslav Jen─ìa, U.N. assistant secretary general for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas, said Wednesday at the meeting. But Russia and China oppose a U.N. peacekeeping mission, leaving many to wonder what other options are left for Haiti. Giroux, the Canadian ambassador, said his country supports a peacekeeping operation “when the time is right.” “Everybody is looking at a peacekeeping mission as a silver bullet,” he said, adding that even if that were to happen, it wouldn’t be able to deploy for another six to 12 months. “We need to be realistic.” Giroux said he is hopeful that some 600 Kenyans will arrive in Haiti in upcoming weeks, but added that “none of this matters if the political elite doesn’t get its act together.” The nine-member transitional presidential council has been marred by accusations of corruption and infighting and was criticized for firing the previous prime minister. “I’m at a loss for any short-term solution for Haiti, let alone any long-term solutions,” Fatton said. “The gangs have seen that they shouldn’t be afraid of the Kenyan mission.” He said one option may be for the government to negotiate with the gangs. “At the moment, it is perceived as utterly unacceptable,” he said. “But if the situation deteriorates even more, what else are you left with?” SOURCE: The Associated Press
SMU has plenty to play for when it closes the regular season against California on Saturday afternoon in Dallas. The Mustangs (10-1, 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who checked in at No. 9 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday, would like to send their seniors off the right way. They would also like to complete a perfect regular season before appearing in the ACC title game in their first year in the conference. Most importantly, they want to continue to strengthen their playoff case. "You've got the College Football Playoff, so every game matters. That's what's so cool about it now. The regular season is important," SMU coach Rhett Lashlee said. "We'd like to finish well in everything we do, particularly on Saturday, to finish off the regular season, continue our momentum into the following week. Hopefully, continue to show the committee and others that we're worthy of continuing to play this year." The Mustangs are a worthy playoff team to date. Kevin Jennings has established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the country, throwing for 2,521 yards with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also has rushed for 315 yards and four TDs. Brashard Smith has been another standout, rushing for 1,089 yards and 13 TDs. Defensively, the Mustangs rank tied for 14th in the country with 20 takeaways. "Obviously they've had a phenomenal season," Cal coach Justin Wilcox said of SMU. "As soon as you turn the tape on, it doesn't take very long to see why their record is what it is. They're very, very good really in every phase of the game - extremely explosive and quick and fast. They've got a dominant D-line. We've got a lot of challenges in front of us and our guys are excited for that." Cal (6-5, 2-5) is coming off an emotional win, defeating rival Stanford 24-21 on Saturday to secure a bowl berth. The Golden Bears will appear in consecutive bowls for the first time since 2018-19 and are now looking to clinch their first winning season since 2019. SMU is not overlooking Cal, as all five of the Golden Bears' losses have come by one score. "You'd be hard-pressed to find a better 6-5 team in America," Lashlee said. "I think you can conservatively say they very, very easily could be 9-2." Cal is led by quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who has thrown for 3,004 yards with 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. Tight end Jack Endries leads the team with 555 yards receiving, while wide receiver Nyziah Hunter has caught a team-leading five touchdowns. Defensively, Cal has the ACC's top scoring defense (20.7 points per game) and is tied with Clemson for the ACC's best turnover margin (plus-13). Defensive back Nohl Williams is the star of the group -- he leads the country with seven interceptions. Even though oddsmakers are heavily favoring SMU, Cal is going into the game with a simple mindset. "Our task at hand is to make the best bowl game right now," Mendoza said. "And the way to do that is to go into Dallas, give it our best and ruin SMU's season." Saturday will mark the first conference meeting between these ACC newcomers, and just the second meeting between the programs all time. SMU won a 13-6 game back in 1957. --Field Level MediaAP Trending SummaryBrief at 4:13 p.m. EST
HALIFAX — A day after Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston led the Progressive Conservatives to a massive majority win, the Liberals were licking their wounds and wondering why their party was almost wiped off the political map. On Wednesday morning, once all the ballots were counted, the incumbent Tories had secured 43 of the 55 seats in the legislature, an increase of nine. The NDP won nine seats, an increase of three, and the Liberals fell to only two seats, a dozen less than when the campaign started. One Independent candidate held her seat — a first for the province. Liberal Leader Zach Churchill, a 40-year-old former cabinet minister, lost his seat after a long, see-saw battle with his Tory rival in the riding of Yarmouth — Churchill's hometown on Nova Scotia's southwestern shore. The Liberals had to give up their role as official opposition and the party barely held on to official party status. "At the end of the day, this falls on my shoulders," Churchill said afterwards. "This loss belongs to me and me alone." But it would be wrong to blame Churchill for his party's collapse at the polls, says Tom Urbaniak, a political science professor at Cape Breton University in Sydney, N.S. "Zach Churchill was dealing with a damaged Liberal brand — damaged in large part by the current standing of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau," Urbaniak said in an interview Wednesday, adding that Houston took advantage of that weakness. "(Churchill) was portrayed as Justin Trudeau's junior protege. And that stuck with some Nova Scotians." Throughout the campaign, Houston and his Tory colleagues tried to link Trudeau — whose Liberals are trailing the federal Tories by about 20 points in the polls — with Churchill, a well-spoken career politician who was elected to lead the provincial party in July 2022. "We know Zach Churchill defends his federal cousins at every turn,” provincial Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Kent Smith said in a statement early in the campaign. “Once again, when Zach Churchill had the choice to stand up for Nova Scotians or stand with Justin Trudeau, he chose Trudeau.” Churchill was also hobbled by a relatively low provincial profile, Urbaniak said. Despite the fact that he had held the riding of Yarmouth for the past 14 years and served in the cabinet of former Liberal premier Stephen McNeil, Churchill failed to leave much of an impression on the electorate, he said. Part of the problem was that McNeil, who served as premier from 2013 to 2021, rarely let his ministers spend much time in the limelight. "Stephen McNeil, at times, ran a one-person government," the professor said. "The premier made the big decisions .... That came back to hurt Zach Churchill." As well, Houston's decision to call an early election also stung the Liberals and the NDP, both of which were still nominating candidates when the campaign started. On another front, the Liberals in southwestern Nova Scotia were hurt by the fact that residents in several fishing communities had long complained about what they said was the federal Liberal government's failure to stop the illegal fishing of lobsters and baby eels. "The perceived federal mismanagement was a factor in some ridings," Urbaniak said, pointing to the Acadian riding of Clare, which had been held by the Liberals for the past 31 years. Liberal candidate Ronnie LeBlanc, a local fisherman, lost the riding to rookie Tory candidate Ryan Robicheau on Tuesday night by more than 1,000 votes. During the campaign, Churchill promised to establish an inquiry into illegal fishing, but voters on the South Shore were unimpressed. The Tories won all nine ridings in the region. It was Churchill's first election as leader. On Tuesday night, he declined to say if he would stay in the role. Neither Churchill nor Houston were available for an interview Wednesday. As for the NDP, party leader Claudia Chender said she was looking forward to taking on the large Tory majority. "I think what we take away from being the official Opposition is that people are looking for a strong voice and they are looking for a different voice,” said Chender, a 48-year-old lawyer. It was also her first election as leader. She said her priorities include pushing for more protection for renters, and reducing the number of people still seeking a doctor. The three additional seats won by the NDP are all in the Halifax area, part of the party’s traditional power base. Chender said the election results showed her party has room to grow, particularly along the South Shore and in Cape Breton. “In many ridings across this province there were tight two- or three-way races and we are building,” she said. “I think that work has started and will continue.” This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 27, 2024. Michael MacDonald, The Canadian PressCharlotte who is currently eight months pregnant, was in the house with her two year old Alba when a group of masked intruders entered their Sunderland home, it is alleged. Big Win for JMM-Congress, BJP's 'Infiltrator' Bogey That Failed: 5 Key TakeawaysThe Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum (PDP-GF) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of manipulation of the recent Edo State governorship election, describing it as a “rape of democracy.” The governors, in a meeting held at the Plateau State Government House in Jos, Plateau State on Saturday and chaired by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, issued a resolution that called for urgent reforms to safeguard the sanctity of the electoral process in Nigeria. The meeting was attended by key figures from across the party, including members of the National Working Committee (NWC), the Board of Trustees (BOT), the National Assembly Forum, Former Governors’ Forum, Former Ministers’ Forum, and other prominent party leaders. In a communique released after the meeting, they strongly condemned the alleged Edo election manipulation in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC), despite the PDP candidate, Asue Ighodalo, winning the majority of lawful votes. The governors urged the judiciary to act decisively to protect Nigerian democracy, calling for legal interventions to reverse any electoral outcomes that were the result of “institutional sabotage.” They also called on the National Assembly to review Nigeria’s electoral laws to prevent such manipulation in the future, urging a reform of the electoral system to ensure that the will of the people is upheld. “The Forum notes with concern the rape of democracy in Edo Governorship elections. It is clear to everyone with conscience that Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) manipulated results in favour of the APC candidate when in fact majority of lawful votes were won by the PDP candidate, Mr. Asue Ighodalo,” the PDP governors said. “The Forum calls on the judiciary to save Nigerian democracy and the National Assembly to look into our electoral laws to make it difficult for institutional sabotage of the will of the people,” the communique added. It revealed that the governors are still examining the documents in Ondo Elections governorship election “where the APC manipulated results after openly buying votes.” The Forum expressed deep concerns about what it described as “seeming divisions” within the party. However, it reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining unity and cohesion within the PDP, stating its determination to uphold the party’s role as the best platform for democratic governance in Nigeria. The governors also acknowledged the internal challenges faced by the party, including leadership disputes and ongoing litigations. The PDP governors agreed to postpone the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, originally scheduled for the same date, in solidarity with their colleague who recently lost his wife. The Forum advised the NWC to convene the NEC by the first week of February 2025, following a period of consultations with key stakeholders. The resolution was made with a focus on addressing the party’s existential issues and ensuring that the party presents a united front going into the 2025 general elections. “Between November and February, we will address the existential problems confronting the Party, with a deliberate timeline of activities to resolve leadership issues and ongoing litigations,” the Forum noted. The PDP governors also expressed serious concern over the economic hardship Nigerians are currently facing, which they attributed to the policies of the APC-led federal government. The Forum called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently review both macroeconomic and fiscal policies to address the welfare and well-being of Nigerians. “The Forum empathizes with Nigerians who are groaning under the oppressive economic hardship foisted on the nation by the policies and decisions of the APC-led Federal Government,” the communique read. “We call on President Bola Tinubu to urgently review these policies to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians and to provide hope for a better future.” Despite the challenges facing Nigeria, the Forum reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to the country’s development. The governors promised to continue implementing policies that would help alleviate economic hardship and promote national progress. They also expressed gratitude to the government and people of Plateau State for hosting the meeting, highlighting the state’s visible progress in areas such as social services, tourism, and transportation. “We commend the Government of Plateau State for its visible and laudable transformation in social services, tourism, and transportation,” the statement said. “We believe this progress gives Nigerians hope for a brighter future under the leadership of the PDP after 2027.” The Forum expressed empathy for Governor Eno Bassey of Akwa Ibom State, who had recently lost his wife, extending its condolences to him and his family, praying for strength and fortitude during this difficult time. The Forum also extended its condolences to Plateau and Jigawa States over recent tragedies. The PDP governors expressed their sympathies for the devastating fire at the Katako Market in Plateau, which destroyed millions of Naira worth of property. The PDP governors commiserated with Jigawa State following the tragic tanker explosion that claimed many lives and left several others injured. Labourers, commuters bear consequences of PTI protest leading to security lockdown Authorities block major roads with shipping containers to bar PTI convoys from entering capital Daily wage labourers and commuters suffered the consequences of a security lockdown in Islamabad on Sunday which was placed to block access to the convoys of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters heading to the federal capital for a "do-and-die" protest. The blockade of arterial roads and disruption of mobile and internet services brought unwanted consequences for daily wage labourers including those who run online taxis in the federal capital. The residents of Islamabad lamented the road closures, as they faced difficulties in reaching the desired destination particularly hospitals for medical emergency. Highways leading to Islamabad have been blocked in a bid to stop the PTI protesters from entering the federal capital. Most major roads of the city have also been blocked by the government with shipping containers and large contingents of police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in riot gear. Gatherings of any sort have been banned under legal provisions, the Islamabad police said in a statement. Global internet watchdog NetBlocks said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that live metrics showed WhatsApp messaging services had been restricted ahead of the protests. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, is expected to lead the largest convoy into Islamabad, calling on people to gather near the entrance of the city's red zone, known as "D Chowk". Islamabad's red zone houses the country's parliament building, important government installations, as well as embassies and foreign institutions' offices. "Imran Khan has called on us to remain there till all our demands are met," he said in a video message on Saturday. The PTI's demands include the release of all its leaders, including Khan, revoke the passage of the 26th Constitutional Amendment and return of the "stolen" mandate in the February 8 election. Khan has been in jail since August last year and, since being voted out of power by parliament in 2022, faces a number of charges ranging from corruption to instigation of violence. He and his party deny all the charges. "These constant protests are destroying the economy and creating instability ... we want the political leadership to sit together and resolve these matters," Muhammad Asif, 35, a resident of Islamabad said in front of a closed market. The last protest in Islamabad by PTI in early October turned violent with one policeman killed, dozens of security personnel injured and protesters arrested. Both sides accused the other of instigating the clashes. Similarly, citizens of Lahore — the provincial capital of Punjab — faced the same restrictions as strict security measures were taken in view of the former ruling party's protests. An Islamabad-based health journalist, Muhammad Waqar Bhatti, shared videos of a major road blocked by heavy shipping containers. He said that several roads were closed for traffic, including Margalla Avenue connecting GT Road to Islamabad, GT Road leading to Rawalpindi and GT Road to Taxila. Bhatti expressed fears that any cardiac or stroke patients may lose his life as all roads leading to health facilities were closed. An X user, MZR (@MZRAWAZ), shared a photo showing him sitting in a car while trying to take his ailing father to a hospital. He wrote: "I know how I managed to take my father to hospital today. He was on emergency Oxygen already. I don't know how many like me were in such troubles." All major roads, including the motorway, enabling access to the provincial capital were closed to traffic, bringing difficulties for daily wagers, online transporters, as well as tourists. A woman told Geo News that he arrived in Lahore for a tour, but she found nowhere to go as all markets and key destinations were closed. Another man said he was worried about finding a route to the airport after witnessing road blockades in Lahore. A large number of citizens, who wanted to travel to other cities from Lahore, headed towards the railway station due to the closure of bus terminals, Geo News reported. However, the schedule of trains has also been disrupted due to the protests. Many travellers complained that they got no confirmation from the officials regarding the exact departure time. It is pertinent to mention here that public gatherings have been banned in Islamabad for two more months and in Rawalpindi till November 26. Similar restrictions were announced in Punjab for three days starting from Saturday under Section 144. Prairie View fires football coach Bubba McDowellTEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Caleb McCullough was there for the dark times at Arizona State, when the losses piled up and the cloud of an NCAA investigation was hovering over the program. The senior linebacker opted to stick around, believing in coach Kenny Dillingham's vision for a better future. It came sooner than anyone outside the program expected. "I’m doing whatever I can to win,” McCullough said. “I’m not really a stat player. This is my last year of college and my main goal is just to win.” The Sun Devils are doing just that, becoming one of college football's biggest surprises along the way. Picked to finish last in its first Big 12 season, Arizona State (8-2, 5-2 Big 12) now controls its destiny for a spot in the conference title game. The 21st-ranked Sun Devils have already clinched their first bowl berth since 2021, the year they were last ranked in the AP Top 25 before this week. Arizona State has taken down two ranked teams this season, 27-19 over then-No. 16 Utah on Oct. 11 and 24-14 at then-No. 20 Kansas State last weekend. The Sun Devils will play their biggest home game in recent memory against No. 14 BYU on Saturday , the first home game between ranked teams in Tempe since 2014. Beat the Cougars and Arizona State can clinch a spot in the Big 12 Championship on Dec. 7 in Arlington, Texas, with a win over rival Arizona in the regular-season finale. “It means a lot to these guys to come in here with that chip on their shoulder and do something that really nobody thought we could do,” Dillingham said. Arizona State faced adversity on and off the field when Dillingham arrived in 2023. After winning eight games in 2021, the Sun Devils went 3-9 the following year while under investigation by the NCAA, a combination that led to the firing of Herm Edwards during his fifth season here. Dillingham had success as Oregon's offensive coordinator and brought the requisite enthusiasm of being a young — he was 32 at the time — first-time head coach returning to his alma mater. Despite rallying the community around the program, Dillingham fell into hard luck his first season in the desert. The Sun Devils were decimated by injuries, particularly at quarterback, and never recovered, finishing 3-9 for the second straight season. But Dillingham had the pieces in place. He proved to be adept at finding the right players through the transfer portal, landing former Sacramento State running back Cam Skattebo two years ago and former Michigan State quarterback Sam Leavitt prior to this season. The hard-running Skattebo has been one of the nation's best running backs and Leavitt has been a perfect fit for Arizona State's offense, making good decisions while extending plays with his legs. The portal success extends across Arizona State's roster and Dillingham has sprinkled in solid recruiting classes while convincing key players to remain, a combination that's meshed into a team that could crash the College Football Playoff if the pieces fall just right. “We were a three-win team twice,” Dillingham said. “We were under NCAA sanctions. Most head coaches, to be brutally honest, get fired if you take a job under sanctions. You don’t survive. You’re hired to be fired. That’s the nature of the beast and right now we’re sitting here at 8-2, and I couldn’t be prouder." Dillingham's vision for a better future, one the rest of the country didn't see coming, is here and now.
