The court was told the mother concealed the baby’s presence from her siblings by hiding her in the drawer of her divan bed, and kept her secret from her partner, who often stayed at the house. Rachel Worthington, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said the child did not respond to her own name when found, and had been left alone for long periods to “fend for herself” without enough food. The court was told the girl was severely malnourished, to the point she looked like a seven-month-old baby and not a three-year-old child, and had been fed with milky Weetabix through a syringe. She also had a cleft palate and several other medical issues which her mother had not sought treatment for. The offences covered a period from early 2020 to early 2023, when the girl was discovered after a visitor to the home heard a noise upstairs and found her on the bed. A social worker was called to the house after the discovery, and described her “overwhelming horror” at what she saw on entering the bedroom. The child was found with matted hair, deformities and rashes. The fifth season of ABC's "Shark Tank" was particularly long — 29 episodes deep. Episode 25 premiered on April 18, 2014, to 6.77 million viewers, according to ratings measured by Nielsen. The first of the week's four pitches was for Ilumi, a smart lightbulb company. Watching the segment is an exercise in how much has changed over a decade, if just how much the price of smart lightbulbs has dropped since the episode was shot. Ilumi's bulbs were close to $100 each, though the company was positioned more as a maker of lighting systems than a singular bulb company, aiming for the high-end market. Ultimately, the ilumi founders would make a deal with Mark Cuban after fielding offers from multiple sharks. This is a case where loyal viewers may be aware that the deal formally closed, as it was the subject of a "Shark Tank Update" segment two seasons later. However, there have been some twists and turns since then. The company still exists, but one of the two co-founders left. Both the name and the mission have changed. By all appearances, the Ilumi name looks like it's on life support, but the rebranded company, Meshtek, seems like it's still going strong after a pivot to specialized Bluetooth technology and other internet-of-things device manufacturers. Swapnil Bora and Corey Egan entered the tank seeking $250,000 for 15% of ilumi, their Bluetooth-connected smart lightbulb business. They demonstrated the smart lightbulb features that we have all become familiar with, from color options to custom routines, before describing how they met while pursuing their MBAs. During that time, they started working on ilumi, and, in the process, won the University of Texas at Dallas's Business Idea Competition, netting a $5,000 prize that they invested back into their business. After explaining that they hadn't hit the market yet, the price point of the bulbs was revealed: $289 for a three-pack of bulbs, with Bora claiming that the bulbs each last up to 20 years and Egan saying that they're aiming for more of a high-end market where the price wasn't an issue and their product was viewed more as a lighting system than a brand of lightbulbs. Barbara Corcoran opted out first, thinking people would not want to control their lights with smartphones or tablets and that the price was too high. Lori Greiner followed, feeling that there were too many competitors to invest without finalized patents. Robert Herjavec, though, offered $350,000 for 35 percent, while Mark Cuban undercut him at 25 percent, and Kevin O'Leary went for 15 percent of licensing deals. Cuban briefly pulled out when Egan wanted to hear the other Sharks' offers, but after Egan asked for a "24 second shot clock" reprieve, they made a deal. Usually, with Mark Cuban deals, the best source to use to determine if the deal closed after the post-shooting due diligence process is the listing of his "Shark Tank" investments on his official website , but Ilumi isn't listed on that page. However, we know that the deal closed because ilumi got an official Shark Tank Update segment during season seven in the episode that opened with the pitch for SmartPlate . In that segment, Cuban joined Swapnil Bora and Corey Egan at the January 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas , where they explained that since the production of their "Shark Tank" episode, ilumi had gone from pre-revenue to $2 million in sales with a pretty extensive network of retail partners. "This isn't a lightbulb company," explained Cuban during the recap segment. "This is a Bluetooth mesh networking company that will be able to control any type of device without having to use the internet." As 2016 rolled on, ilumi seemed intent on following through on what Cuban said in their update, focusing in press releases on their MeshTek branding. Eventually, in 2019, the company was renamed MeshTek Labs, marking its move into the larger "internet of things" market while leveraging its expertise in Bluetooth mesh networking. It's under that name that it's on Cuban's investment list, solving that mystery. When Bora was named Meshtek CEO in 2019, Cuban even lent a quote to the press release, saying MeshTek would "revolutionize how devices are controlled with edge computing and how connectivity will impact daily business activities." MeshTek is still alive and well as a Bluetooth mesh networking company specializing in "internet of things" devices, but the ilumi brand looks like it's more or less dead. As of this writing, there is nothing currently available to order from the ilumi website ; though the website still touts that ilumi products are now available in Best Buy, there are no relevant hits for a search for ilumi on BestBuy.com . Ilumi's official blog has also not been updated since September 2017 despite being updated on a regular basis up to that point. You can still get an ilumi lightbulb at Amazon for $49.99 , but that appears to be long-unsold stock and user reviews are mixed. On the other hand, MeshTek Labs appears to be doing fine. The most recent MeshTek press release in the Gale General OneFile news database (previously InfoTrac) is from November 2023 , and the official company blog is still up-to-date, albeit with less frequent posts than the ilumi blog had in its heyday. Going by the website and most recent press releases, it looks like the company turned into exactly what Mark Cuban predicted, with Meshtek now collaborating with companies that license its Bluetooth mesh technology. As far as the ilumi/MeshTek founders go, their LinkedIn pages indicate that one has left the company. Swapnil Bora is still the CEO of MeshTek, but he assumed that role because cofounder Corey Egan left that post in June 2018, eventually joining Meta in May 2020. Egan's still listed as a co-founder and a member of the board of directors, but he's exited entrepreneurship, working for Meta as a product manager. So far as Meshtek is concerned, if the company blog is any indication, then the company is continuing to make deals with other companies to push Bluetooth mesh networking forward for internet-of-things devices as an alternative to Wi-Fi. The most recent MeshTek press release, from November 2023 , dovetails with this, announcing a partnership with decorative lighting company Minleon USA to bring MeshTek's technology to Christmas lights and the like. "MeshTek's and Minleon's collaboration is leading to a rapid increase of transformative lighting installations that were once cost-prohibitive and complex," said Mark Cuban in the release. " The ability to control and manage hundreds and thousands of devices within millions of sqft area using Bluetooth is a milestone unsurpassed in an everchanging Technological World. This also gives us an idea of what Mr. Patel, who owns a charitable foundation called Fight with Kash which among other things funds defamation lawsuits, and a clothing line which sells a variety of merchandise with his logo ‘K$H’, stands for — unabashedly brazen and unapologetically loyal to the incoming U.S. President. Mr. Patel, who was born in 1980 to Indian immigrant parents (who first moved to Canada from East Africa in the 1970s and then to the U.S.) started his career as a public defender in the State of Florida, following which he joined the U.S. Justice Department as a counter-terrorism prosecutor. A member of the Republican party, he was then appointed to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) in 2017. He worked as senior aide to Devin Nunes, the chair of the HPSCI and a staunch Trump supporter. Mr. Patel rose up the ranks within Mr. Trump’s inner circle when he scathingly criticised the FBI’s investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. Presidential election. He, along with Mr. Nunes, authored the ‘Nunes memo’ which accused the FBI of being politically motivated in its investigation. The release of the memo was vehemently criticised by the Justice Department as exposing intelligence secrets. From then on, Mr. Patel rose swiftly through administrative ranks. In 2019, he became a member of the National Security Council and was later appointed Chief of Staff to the interim Defence Secretary. President Trump in his last months in office wanted to promote Mr. Patel to deputy FBI director but then Attorney-General William Barr opposed it, writing in his memoir that he told the then White House Chief of Staff that such an appointment would be ‘over my dead body’. After Mr. Trump’s first presidential term, Mr. Patel continued being a Trump loyalist as well as a decrier of intelligence bureaucracies. His experience within the Justice Department had made him deeply suspicious of the FBI and other intelligence agencies. He has repeatedly stated that these agencies are controlled by the ‘deep state’ — a term used to refer to allegations that actors within bureaucracy control and run the government. He authored a book called Government Gangsters, which is part memoir and part tirade against the ‘deep state’, and lists out individuals who are enablers of the system such as President Joe Biden, William Barr, Hilary Clinton etc. Massive upheaval He has stated in his book that top officials of the FBI need to be fired and the organisation be given a massive upheaval and reorganisation. He has been a vocal proponent for reform within the FBI stating that the organisation’s footprint has gotten too big. “I’d shut down the FBI. Hoover Building on Day 1 and reopen it the next day as a museum of the ‘deep state,’” Mr. Patel said in an interview. “And I’d take the 7,000 employees that work in that building and send them across America to chase down criminals.” He has vowed to go after journalists who leaked intelligence reports and the officials who facilitated such leaks. In an interview with Steve Bannon last year, he stated “We’re going to come after the people in the media who lied about American citizens, who helped Joe Biden rig presidential elections. We’re going to come after you...we’re putting you all on notice.” Mr. Trump has repeatedly vowed to go after his political enemies and institutions which conducted investigations on him after his Presidential term in 2020. Having Mr. Patel — a man who has appeared with him for hearings, testified for him and is also now serving on the board of the parent company of Truth Social, Mr. Trump’s social network — at the helm of the FBI could give the President-elect access to potential and ongoing investigations. Cowher was the head coach in Pittsburgh for 15 seasons, and he brought Pittsburgh to two Super Bowls with a victory in Super Bowl XL. It is safe to say the former coach knows a thing or two about having a successful team in Pittsburgh, and Cowher recently appeared on KDKA and gave his thoughts on the 2024 team. "They still have to play the Eagles, they still have to play the Chiefs. Those will be great litmus tests for them to see where they are." Cowher said. "I think they go as far as they need to go. I don't see a weakness. Think they can stay healthy, I don't see that they can't match up on any given Sunday against anybody in the AFC or even anybody in the NFC to be quite frank with you." The former coach doesn't see much of a weakness in the current Steelers. Going into the season, most fans would have said that the offense would be a clear weakness for the team, but the group is currently top 10 in scoring on the 2024 season. The offense looks the best it has in years with Wilson at quarterback, and it is the reason the Steelers should be able to compete with any team in the NFL. Wilson has been playing like one of the best quarterbacks in the league since taking over the starting role earlier in the year. The new-look offense for the Steelers paired with the stifling defense makes them a dangerous team. Pittsburgh has two big games against the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs later in the 2024 season, and those games will be able to give fans a good idea of what to expect from Pittsburgh once the postseason comes around. The Steelers have already beaten five teams that are expected to make it to the postseason in the Atlanta Falcons, Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens and Washington Commanders. The Steelers are currently undefeated against teams with a winning record, but with the Chiefs and Eagles each making it to the Super Bowl in 2022 those two contests are the biggest games on the schedule for the Steelers. Steelers' Russell Wilson Is The Biggest Deciding Factor In How Far Pittsburgh Can Go In 2024 The Steelers may not have a clear weakness, but the team's success relies on the play of Wilson . Wilson has been good for the most part, but he has had some games where he shows his age. During the Steelers' Week 12 loss to the Cleveland Browns, Wilson was often stagnant in the pocket which allowed the Browns defense to get to the quarterback and ultimately win the game. The veteran has gotten more comfortable within the offense as the weeks continue to go by, and if he is able to be successful then the Steelers have a chance to go far. They should be able to compete with the Chiefs and the other top teams in the AFC. The Steelers have not won a playoff game since the 2016 season, but that unfortunate streak should be able to come to an end in 2024.
