Qatar tribune qNA London Lord Mayor of the City of London Alastair King emphasized that the state visit of His Highness the Amir of the State of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to the United Kingdom is a celebration of the wonderful relations between Qatar and Britain in the areas of trade, finance, cultural activities and more. In his remarks to Qatar News Agency (QNA), the Lord Mayor of the City of London said that the UK is very pleased to welcome HH the Amir to London, along waited visit that comes at a historic moment, as they prepare to announce the UK-GCC Free Trade Agreement, which they hope will be signed soon. He noted that the agreement will create huge opportunities for both Qatari and British companies. Lord Alastair King indicated that the United Kingdom views Qatar as a very important investment partner and is grateful for the confidence shown in Qatar’s investments in many of its institutions and businesses. He added that the investments are not limited to London only, but extend to several parts of the United Kingdom, as investment opportunities also exist in the southeast of England. He added that he is working to encourage companies in the United Kingdom to launch and look for new markets in places like Qatar. He pointed that Britain has a lot of experience in things like sustainable finance and project finance, noting that he is awaiting Qatari investors to enter some of the unusual technological fields that Britain has. He highlighted that Qatar is looking with interest at these areas, in addition to other areas such as the extraordinary scientific development in the life sciences, adding that there is a wonderful flow of investments in both directions between Qatar and the United Kingdom. He added that London and Doha have very close relations, with a number of Qatari institutions and banks and other institutions based in London, doing a lot of business. It is also great to see British banks well represented in Qatar. Qatari money is invested in other British financial institutions, and there are some other financial institutions in Qatar, which attract some British investment. Speaking about British trade with GCC countries, Lord Mayor of the City of London Alastair King told QNA that the trade between the two sides is expected to grow by 16 percent to around GBP 57 billion. He noted that there are exceptional opportunities in UK-Qatar relations, and the free trade agreement will allow for a lot of investment flows between the two countries. He pointed out that the GCC countries are the UK’s fourth largest trading partner, adding that there are investment opportunities in many different sectors. The Lord Mayor of the City of London said that there is a lot of investment coming from Qatar in terms of green finance, an area where the UK feels it is the market leader, as they have GBP 91 billion of assets under management in green investment funds, and there is Qatari participation in those investment funds, which is very pleasing. He added that they see a huge opportunity to push green investment forward following the signing of the UK-GCC Free Trade Agreement, one example of which is the issuance of green Sukuks on the London Stock Exchange, which he will be discussing with a number of Qatari institutions during his visit to Doha in May 2025. The Lord Mayor of the City of London concluded his remarks to QNA by saying that the meetings with HH the Amir during the visit will create exceptional opportunities to build on commercial relations, and there are several things that they will discuss with His Highness, looking forward to working on how to develop these relations in the field of financial and professional services. Copy 04/12/2024 10CEBU CITY, Philippines—Against all odds, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars defied expectations and claimed third place in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) Season 24 Men’s Basketball Tournament. Despite an undermanned roster, the Jaguars displayed heart, overcoming the favored Benedicto College Cheetahs in a thrilling overtime battle, 70-67, on Tuesday night, December 3, 2024, at the Cebu Coliseum. The Jaguars faced numerous challenges throughout the season, missing key players due to academic woes with a rookie head coach leading them. They faced elimination after a hard-fought loss to the University of Cebu Webmasters, 53-58, on November 29, in the Final Four. However, they rebounded with grit to rewrite their narrative in the battle for third place. READ MORE: CESAFI: UV Baby Lancers salvage third place with win over UC USJ-R shocked the Cheetahs early, controlling the first half with a commanding 16-point lead, 39-23, at halftime. Benedicto College responded in the third quarter, narrowing the gap to four points, 43-47, setting the stage for a tug-of-war final frame. The fourth quarter saw intense back-and-forth action, with three lead changes and deadlocks. In the final moments of regulation, Benedicto’s Allen Angelo Alicando sank three clutch free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt, tying the game at 59-all with just 8.1 seconds left. USJ-R had a chance to seal the win, but Rodge Aldrich Balbao’s fumbled the ball in transition, resulting to a turnover. It allowed the Cheetahs a final attempt, but Junil Bulan missed a potential game-winner, sending the contest into overtime. Team captain Elmer Echavez Jr. made his final game in Cesafi memorable, scoring crucial points in overtime to give USJ-R a 63-59 lead. Despite Benedicto College’s efforts, including baskets from AJ Tolipas and Serge Gabines, the Jaguars held on. Balbao redeemed himself with vital free throws, extending their advantage, 65-62. Benedicto College suffered setbacks as exhaustion took its toll—Bulan exited with leg cramps, and key turnovers proved costly. Vince Alfred Manangquil’s free throws widened the gap 67-62, while Alicando’s efforts in the charity stripe to keep the Cheetahs in the game fell short as time expired. Echavez closed his CESAFI career with a stellar double-double of 16 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a block. Balbao and Jay Deiparine contributed 10 points each, while Al James Calizar added 12 points. For Benedicto College, Gabines was the lone bright spot, finishing with 15 points, eight rebounds, a steal, and a block. Ironically, Benedicto College led in almost all facets of the game. They outplayed USJ-R in the interior, 40-30, and converted more points from turnovers, 20-13. The Cheetahs also dominated second-chance points, 19-8, and had the edge in fast-break points, 24-21. WASHINGTON (AP) — The House shut down Democrats' efforts Thursday to release the long-awaited ethics report into former Rep. Matt Gaetz , pushing the fate of any resolution to the yearslong investigation of sexual misconduct allegations into further uncertainty. The nearly party-line votes came after Democrats had been pressing for the findings to be published even though the Florida Republican left Congress and withdrew as President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general. Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., was the sole Republican to support the effort. Most Republicans have argued that any congressional probe into Gaetz ended when he resigned from the House. Speaker Mike Johnson also requested that the committee not publish its report, saying it would be a terrible precedent to set. While ethics reports have previously been released after a member’s resignation, it is extremely rare. Shortly before the votes took place, Rep. Sean Casten, D-Ill., who introduced one of the bills to force the release, said that if Republicans reject the release, they will have “succeeded in sweeping credible allegations of sexual misconduct under the rug.” Gaetz has repeatedly denied the claims. Earlier Thursday, the Ethics panel met to discuss the Gaetz report but made no decision, saying in a short statement that the matter is still being discussed. It's unclear now whether the document will ever see the light of day as lawmakers only have a few weeks left before a new session of Congress begins. It's the culmination of weeks of pressure on the Ethics committee's five Republicans and five Democrats who mostly work in secret as they investigate allegations of misconduct against lawmakers. The status of the Gaetz investigation became an open question last month when he abruptly resigned from Congress after Trump's announcement that he wanted his ally in the Cabinet. It is standard practice for the committee to end investigations when members of Congress depart, but the circumstances surrounding Gaetz were unusual, given his potential role in the new administration. Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., the committee chairman, said Wednesday that there is no longer the same urgency to release the report given that Gaetz has left Congress and stepped aside as Trump's choice to head the Justice Department. “I’ve been steadfast about that. He’s no longer a member. He is no longer going to be confirmed by the Senate because he withdrew his nomination to be the attorney general,” Guest said. The Gaetz report has also caused tensions between lawmakers on the bipartisan committee. Pennsylvania Rep. Susan Wild, the top Democrat on the panel, publicly admonished Guest last month for mischaracterizing a previous meeting to the press. Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing and said last year that the Justice Department’s separate investigation against him into sex trafficking allegations involving underage girls ended without federal charges. His onetime political ally Joel Greenberg , a fellow Republican who served as the tax collector in Florida’s Seminole County, admitted as part of a plea deal with prosecutors in 2021 that he paid women and an underage girl to have sex with him and other men. The men were not identified in court documents when he pleaded guilty. Greenberg was sentenced in late 2022 to 11 years in prison.
The world stands at the dawn of a “third nuclear age” in which Britain is threatened by multiple dilemmas, the head of the armed forces has warned. But alongside his stark warning of the threats facing Britain and its allies, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin said there would be only a “remote chance” Russia would directly attack or invade the UK if the two countries were at war. The Chief of the Defence Staff laid out the landscape of British defence in a wide-ranging speech, after a minister warned the Army would be wiped out in as little as six months if forced to fight a war on the scale of the Ukraine conflict. The admiral cast doubt on the possibility as he gave a speech at the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi) defence think tank in London. Moscow “knows the response will be overwhelming”, he added, but warned the nuclear deterrent needed to be “kept strong and strengthened”. Sir Tony added: “We are at the dawn of a third nuclear age, which is altogether more complex. It is defined by multiple and concurrent dilemmas, proliferating nuclear and disruptive technologies and the almost total absence of the security architectures that went before.” He listed the “wild threats of tactical nuclear use” by Russia, China building up its weapon stocks, Iran’s failure to co-operate with a nuclear deal, and North Korea’s “erratic behaviour” among the threats faced by the West. But Sir Tony said the UK’s nuclear arsenal is “the one part of our inventory of which Russia is most aware and has more impact on (President Vladimir) Putin than anything else”. Successive British governments had invested “substantial sums of money” in renewing nuclear submarines and warheads because of this, he added. The admiral described the deployment of thousands of North Korean soldiers on Ukraine’s border alongside Russian forces as the year’s “most extraordinary development”. He also signalled further deployments were possible, speaking of “tens of thousands more to follow as part of a new security pact with Russia”. Defence minister Alistair Carns earlier said a rate of casualties similar to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine would lead to the army being “expended” within six to 12 months. In comments reported by Sky News, Mr Carns, a former Royal Marines colonel, said Russia was suffering losses of around 1,500 soldiers killed or injured a day. “In a war of scale – not a limited intervention, but one similar to Ukraine – our Army for example, on the current casualty rates, would be expended – as part of a broader multinational coalition – in six months to a year,” Mr Carns said in a speech at Rusi. He added: “That doesn’t mean we need a bigger Army, but it does mean you need to generate depth and mass rapidly in the event of a crisis.” Official figures show the Army had 109,245 personnel on October 1, including 25,814 volunteer reservists. Mr Carns, the minister for veterans and people, said the UK needed to “catch up with Nato allies” to place greater emphasis on the reserves. The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said Defence Secretary John Healey had previously spoken about “the state of the armed forces that were inherited from the previous government”. The spokesman said: “It’s why the Budget invested billions of pounds into defence, it’s why we’re undertaking a strategic defence review to ensure that we have the capabilities and the investment needed to defend this country.”SEOUL — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has vowed continued support for Russia’s war in Ukraine during a meeting with Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, according to state media reports Saturday. The discussions signal deepening military and strategic ties between the two nations amid growing global concerns. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim and Belousov reached “a satisfactory consensus” on enhancing their countries’ strategic partnership and defending their sovereignty against what they described as imperialist aggression. Kim reiterated North Korea’s support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine, calling it a defensive measure against NATO’s eastward expansion and U.S.-led attempts to weaken Russia. “North Korea will invariably support the policy of the Russian Federation to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity from the imperialists’ moves for hegemony,” KCNA quoted Kim as saying. Reports from the U.S., South Korea, and Ukraine indicate that North Korea has sent over 10,000 troops to Russia, with some already deployed on the frontlines in Ukraine. Additionally, North Korea is alleged to have shipped artillery, missiles, and other weapons to bolster Russia’s depleted stockpiles. Both countries have denied these claims, although they have not formally addressed the troop movements. South Korea and its allies fear that in return for its support, North Korea may receive advanced weapons technologies from Russia, including air defense systems and assistance in developing nuclear missile capabilities. South Korean national security adviser Shin Wonsik recently stated that Russia appears to have supplied North Korea with air defense missile systems, military technologies, and economic aid. The growing partnership between the two nations follows the June signing of a treaty requiring mutual military assistance if either country is attacked. This agreement, considered their most significant defense pact since the Cold War, underscores the strategic alignment between Moscow and Pyongyang. Belousov’s visit also included a meeting with North Korean Defense Minister No Kwang Chol and a banquet, where he emphasized the importance of their partnership in resisting imperialist aggression. — Agencies < Previous Page Next Page >

Pat Bryant dashed in to score off Luke Altmyer’s 43-yard pass early in the third quarter as Illinois (9-3, 6-3 Big Ten) struck for touchdowns just over 4 minutes apart early in the third quarter to open a 28-10 lead in what had been a tight game. Bryant's 10th receiving touchdown tied a school record. Altmyer, who threw for 170 yards, had a TD himself on a keeper from the 1-yard line early in the second quarter. David Olano added a field goal in the fourth to cap Illinois' scoring. Laughery, a sophomore running back, rushed for a career-best 172 yards and topped 100 for the first time. He entered with only one TD this season and two for his career. He had a career-long 64-yard run for a score early in the second half. Coach Bret Bielema said he wasn't surprised by Laughery's explosive performance as the Gibson City, Illinois product rounded back into form after being hampered by a hamstring injury earlier this season. “I thought today would be a day that could happen,” Bielema said. “Today some of those turned into big home run hits we've kind of been waiting on all year.” Laughery said he's been prepping for this kind of game, when he carried the ball 12 times for an average of 14.3 yards. “Finally, the opportunity was there,” said Laughery, who got the game ball. “You know you gotta' hit one and it came together today.” He credited the Illini offensive line with opening space for his breakout performance. “Those guys were covering them (Northwestern's defense) all day long,” Laughery said. “It was awesome running behind the looks we were getting” Northwestern’s Devin Turner intercepted Altmyer twice, including for a 13-yard touchdown return late in the first quarter. Thomas Gordon caught Jack Lausch's 15-yard TD pass with a minute left, then the Wildcats added a two-point conversion to complete the scoring. Northwestern (4-8, 2-7 Big Ten) didn’t pack it in as hosted its second game this season at Wrigley Field, this time on a breezy sunny day with game-time temperature of 20 degrees. It looked like the Illini might run away after Bryant’s 10th receiving touchdown 4:52 into the third. He entered tied for the Big Ten lead. But Luke Akers kicked his second field goal of the game, a 34-yarder, with 5:35 left in the third quarter to cut it to 28-13. Lausch led the Wildcats on their next possession and finished it with an 11-yard touchdown toss to A.J. Henning to narrow the Illini lead to 28-20. Then Mac Resetich intercepted Lausch’s pass 50 seconds into the fourth quarter. Laughery powered up the middle for 31 yards and his third TD about two minutes later to quell the Wildcats' momentum. Story continues below video Northwestern dominated in possession time — 34:32 to 25:28 —and plays — 90 to 53. The margin was even more pronounced in the first half, but the Wildcats settled for a 13-yard touchdown return on Turner’s second pick of the game with 2:14 left in the first quarter and Akers’ 21-yard field goal that opened the scoring 6:29 in. Illinois led 14-10 at the half on Laughery’s 30-yard TD run midway through the first quarter and Altmyer’s keeper 1:39 into the second. Akers missed wide to the right on a 44-yard attempt as time ran out in the half. Both teams’ leading pass receivers were injured. Northwestern’s Bryce Kirtz was knocked out of the game in the first quarter with a lower-body injury after two receptions that upped his total yards to 598. Illinois’ Bryant went to the locker room with about 5 minutes left in the first half after Turner collided with him as he plucked his second interception. Bryant returned, however, for the second half. Illinois: Is in line for a prestigious bowl game appearance and a chance to tie the school record of 10 wins, most recently set during their 2001 Sugar Bowl season. “We wanted to put ourselves in a good position on this day to get to nine wins and see where it can go,” Bielema said. “Just a fun day overall. I don't know what the future holds. It think we're a team that can play with anybody in the country.” Northwestern: Finished its second season under coach David Braun at 4-8 overall and 2-7 in the Big Ten. The Wildcats dropped their final three and five of the last six. Illinois is headed to a bowl game. Northwestern opens its 2025 season at Tulane on Aug. 30. INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The 2024 Big Ten Football Championship Game weekend is set to bring in at least $20 million for the city of Indianapolis. With over 70,000 fans headed to the city, the economic boost won’t just stem from the game’s ticket sales. Sam Reel, communications and marketing manager of Indiana Sports Corp , said, “They’re spending money at restaurants and bars around the city. That’s kind of the cumulative total of all of these people coming into the city.” The game between the Oregon Ducks and the Penn State Nittany Lions is set to begin at 8 p.m. Saturday at Lucaas Oil Stadium, but fans on Thursday were already making their way to Indianapolis. Oregon fans were also offered new nonstop flights to Indy between Friday and Sunday . “Obviously, with Oregon, the Indianapolis Airport Authority have added more flights so they get to experience that low barrier that the Indianapolis Airport obviously provides,” Reel said. “Penn State as well coming in. So, we are seeing more kind of national travel than we might some years.” Once those fans arrive in Indy, they will have several events to attend at the Indianapolis Convention Center next to the stadium. The Big Ten Fan Fest will kick off at 4 p.m. Friday and run until 9 p.m. The fest will include interactive games, guest appearances, food, drink and live entertainment. Anyone with tickets to the championship game can attend the fest for free. Fans who want to attend but do not have tickets to the game can purchase passes for the fest online . Also at the Convention Center, fans can attend the first Big Ten Takedown starting at 5 p.m. Friday. The event is a wrestling dual between Indiana University and Illinois University. Just outside the Convention Center, fans will find Tailgate Town, where they can also enjoy and purchase several Indy iconic foods. “Indianapolis has a lot for you to do that you might not know about,” Reel said. “Obviously, Mass Ave (cultural district) has a great opportunity, but then down here in the downtown core, there’s going to be restaurants with Big Ten signage. Oregon’s having some local events and Penn State as well.” One of those local restaurants gearing up for some big earnings is the Slippery Noodle Inn, located near Lucas Oil Stadium. The bar’s co-owner Sean Lothridge said, “Typically on a Colts Sunday, we’ll run about 1,500 people through the door here, so it will probably be around that level, so we expect this to be like a really busy Colts game.” The bar will also roll out some specialty drinks to bring fans in. “We’re doing some fun themed cocktails for one of the schools. We’re going to cater to them a little bit, but both teams are welcome here and we’ll have a lot of fun.”
Aston Villa return to winning ways by blowing away BrentfordGameStop’s shares jumped on Thursday after a cryptic post from meme stock influencer Keith Gill , who shot to notoriety after his online personas and bullish bets on the video game retailer sparked a trading frenzy among mom-and-pop investors. Gill posted a picture resembling a Time magazine cover from 2006 with a computer screen on social media platform X. Following his post, GameStop’s shares spiked and traded as high as $30.87. The stock closed up 6% at $28.63. Known as “Roaring Kitty” on YouTube and “DeepF***ingValue” on Reddit’s popular WallStreetBets, Gill was a key figure in the so-called “Reddit rally,” in which GameStop stock surged 1,600% at one point in January 2021, crushing hedge funds that had bet against the videogame retailer. Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, noted that this is characteristic of a pattern that has evolved in the trading of GameStop: the stock’s price will rally, then when it settles down a bit or retreats, Gill’s “Roaring Kitty” persona tends to emerge with a social media post. “We’ve seen that pattern again recently; the stock was at $21 earlier in November but then rallied to $30 or so around Thanksgiving, only to give back most of those gains over the last couple of days.” On Thursday, about 300,000 GameStop options contracts had changed hands by 2:14 p.m., at about 1.5 times the usual pace, according to data from options analytics firm Trade Alert. The stock’s 30-day implied volatility — how much traders expect the shares to move around over the short term — jumped to a 3-week high of 132%, up from 93% in the previous session, data showed. Contracts betting on the shares finishing above $30 by Friday were the most actively traded options, with some 32,000 of them traded by late afternoon. ‘Animal spirits’ Gill resurfaced on social media earlier in 2024 , after a three-year hiatus leading to a deluge of excited messages from his followers, many of whom have likened the social media phenomenon to a David who took on Wall Street’s Goliaths and won. “The re-emergence of the popularity of meme stocks tends to follow any general resurgence in market enthusiasm and animal spirits,” said Art Hogan, market strategist at B. Riley Wealth Management. “Whenever markets are at or near all-time highs, that particular part of the speculative side of stocks tends to pop up again.” The meme stock rally in 2021 was set off by Gill’s posts on WallStreetBets subreddit about the gains he had made on his investments in the highly shorted firm. The rally spread to other highly shorted stocks including AMC Entertainment as Reddit users banded together to squeeze bearish hedge funds, costing them billions in losses and drawing scrutiny from US regulators. The entire episode inspired Craig Gillespie’s 2023 movie “Dumb Money.” Other so-called meme stocks also traded higher on Thursday after Gill’s post. Shares of Unity Software closed up 5%, while cinema chain AMC, another darling of retail investors from 2021, climbed 6%. “It wouldn’t surprise me if the faithful haven’t been distracted by other things. Crypto has stolen GameStop’s thunder recently,” Sosnick said. The video game retailer’s stock is up around 76% so far this year. Meanwhile, bitcoin has surged more than 130% and surpassed the $100,000 mark earlier on Thursday, fueled by optimism over easing regulatory headwinds, in what is a stunning rally for the world’s largest cryptocurrency.Bears interim coach Thomas Brown insists he's focused on task at hand and not what his future holds

During their first three-game winning streak of the campaign, the Kings have often had their “A” game, and if last season’s series with the Dallas Stars was any indicator, they’ll need it again when they welcome the green and white on Wednesday. After being outscored 13-3 in a clean sweep of the three-game set last season, the Kings will face the Stars for the first time in 2024-25. Described recently as being simultaneously prone to playing down to lesser opponents and incapable of rising to the occasion consistently against top teams, the Kings have quieted doubters. After a highly convincing win over the delight of the early season, the Winnipeg Jets, they tallied two victories in two days over the .500-ish Ducks and Ottawa Senators . Overall, they’ve outscored opponents 11-4 during their surge. “We’ve just got to keep rolling and keep building in the right direction. We’re getting better,” Kings forward Trevor Moore said. “We’re playing really good defensive hockey right now, goals are starting to come and we have some confident guys.” The Kings also quieted another narrative, one based largely on two poor third periods in San Jose, the last of which condemned them to a 7-2 loss to the Sharks on Nov. 25. Against both Ottawa and the Ducks, they entered the final frame tied, pulling away to reaffirm their status as one of the NHL’s most prolific teams in the closing stanza. “That third period in San Jose was obviously not up to our standard, and we’ve obviously done a good job rebounding from that,” Moore said. Among their six injured players, goalie Darcy Kuemper seemed closest to making his return. Drew Doughty continued to have a longer timeline. Another two-time Stanley Cup champ, Trevor Lewis, will be stuck on 999 games for another four to six weeks, Jim Hiller told reporters Tuesday. Lewis has 101 career goals and 232 career points as he sits on the precipice of what’s now a deferred milestone. Of the 267 forwards with 1,000 or more NHL games played, there are only 49 with fewer goals than Lewis has total points. There are but three forwards in league history with 1,000 games played who have actually recorded fewer points than Lewis. Two were outright enforcers with authoritative nicknames like “The Chief” (Craig Berube) and “The Don” (Donald Brashear). Another, Steve Staios, had over 1,000 career penalty minutes, too. Today, Staios is the general manager of the Senators, Berube coaches the Toronto Maple Leafs and Brashear is still playing at age 52 in a Quebecois minor league. Only the sandpaper-laden fourth-liner Cal Clutterbuck (293 points) and longtime Detroit penalty kill specialist Kirk Maltby (260 points) joined Lewis among other 1,000-game forwards who didn’t penetrate the 300-point barrier. In addition to being a mainstay on the PK, Lewis has proven a popular teammate that’s also a willing extension of the coaching staff, giving him value that overflows from the playing surface onto the bench, into the dressing room, during film sessions and even aboard the team plane, as Hiller explained. “(Lewis) just does so much for our team. He’s a really hard guy to replace,” Hiller concluded. Heading into Dallas, 37-year-old Kings captain Anže Kopitar has eight points in his past five games. The Stars’ own ageless wonder, Joe Pavelski, retired this past offseason, but veterans Matt Duchene and currently injured Tyler Seguin ranked Nos. 1 and 3 in team scoring. Though he’s had a relatively slow start to the season, Arcadia native Jason Robertson has five goals and 12 points in his past seven games against the Kings, six of which were Dallas victories.
