The new agreement prevents military families from needing to seek prior authorization from the insurance provider for services, such as lab work or specialty visits. With five military installations and tens of thousands of veterans in El Paso County, the Colorado Springs hospital sees numerous patients who would have been impacted by the change. Last year, Children’s Hospital Colorado cared for 15,000 TRICARE patients, 10,300 of whom received services in southern Colorado, according to officials. The hospital shared the good news with impacted families on Christmas Eve. "Our patients are at the center of everything we do, and it was important to us to work with TriWest to achieve improvements in the new contract that will help us maintain access to care," said Greg Raymond, president of Children’s Hospital Colorado’s Southern Region in a written response to questions. Colorado Sens. John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet urged TriWest and Children's Hospital to come to an agreement last week to preserve care for those families when negotiations broke down. The potential loss of coverage stemmed from a disagreement over the Defense Health Agency cutting TRICARE reimbursement rates last year for children’s hospitals around the nation. Children's Hospital Colorado estimated at the time the it would see around $17 million cut from its Tricare reimbursements each year because of the changes that lowered reimbursements for outpatient services, according to a lawsuit the hospital filed against the Department of Defense. The TRICARE cuts have reduced outpatient reimbursements by 60%, amounting to losses of $2.4 million per month, said Greg Raymond, president of the hospital network's southern region that's based in Colorado Springs. He spoke to the Gazette for an earlier story . The nonprofit pediatric health system has lost money at its Colorado Springs location since it opened in 2019, but TRICARE's changes have deepened those losses, officials said. At $2.5 million a month, the hospital system would lose $30 million in a year. The hospital has discussed making substantial changes, such as cutting services as a result of lost revenue in the past. But it has not yet made any changes or made decisions about changes, Raymond said, in response to Gazette questions Tuesday. The hospital lost its case against the DOD in April with a judge ruling in favor of the governments' change in reimbursement. The new methodology focuses on hospitals' actual costs — rather than their historic reimbursements, Colorado Politics reported previously . The newly reached agreement will allow Children's Hospital Colorado to maintain care, the news release said. Brian Thompson, 50, was shot around 6:45 a.m. as he walked alone to the New York Hilton Midtown from a nearby hotel, police said. The shooter appeared to be “lying in wait for several minutes” before approaching Thompson from behind and opening fire, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. Police had not yet established a motive. “Many people passed the suspect, but he appeared to wait for his intended target,” Tisch said, adding that the shooting "does not appear to be a random act of violence.” Surveillance video reviewed by investigators shows the shooter emerging from behind a parked car, stopping and pointing a gun at Thompson’s back, holding it with two hands and firing multiple times from several feet away. He is now. And who knows? Maybe for a lot longer than expected. Winston entered Cleveland football folklore on Thursday night by leading the Browns to Pittsburgh Steelers, who had their five-game winning streak stopped. Winston’s performance at Huntington Bank Field, which transformed into the world’s largest snow globe, not only made him an instantaneous hero in the eyes of Browns fans but added another wrinkle to the team’s ever-changing, never-ending quarterback conundrum. In his fourth start since Deshaun Watson’s season-ending Achilles tendon injury, Winston made enough big plays to help the Browns (3-8) get a victory that should quiet conjecture about coach Kevin Stefanski’s job. Some wins mean more than others. In Cleveland, beating the Steelers is as big as it gets. But beyond any instant gratification, Winston has given the Browns more to consider as they move forward. Watson’s future with Cleveland is highly uncertain since it will still be months before the team has a grip on whether he’s even an option in 2025, his fourth year since signing a $230 million, fully guaranteed contract that has proven calamitous. Ghana's opposition leader John Mahama officially won the country's election on Monday, easily defeating the ruling party candidate after voters punished the government's economic management and high living costs. Mahama won 56 percent of the votes in Saturday's presidential ballot, compared to the ruling party candidate and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who secured 41 percent, the electoral commission said announcing official results. The landslide comeback for former president Mahama ended eight years in power for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under President Nana Akufo-Addo, whose last term was marked by Ghana's worst economic turmoil in years, an IMF bailout and a debt default. "These eight years have witnessed some of the darkest periods of our governance," Mahama told crowds of supporters blowing horns and whistles in his party office in Accra. "This mandate also serves as a constant reminder of what fate awaits us if we fail to meet the aspirations of our people." Bawumia, a former central banker, had already quickly conceded defeat on Sunday, acknowledging Ghanaians wanted change after the government failed to shake off widespread frustration. Speaking to MSNBC on Wednesday, the Judiciary Committee member said he expects "very, very serious questions" to be asked of Kash Patel, who Trump has nominated to lead the FBI. Patel reportedly has an "enemies list" and the assumption is that he intends to use the FBI to settle his "grievances," The New York Times reported on Tuesday. Whitehouse said Democrats will likely want to know more about what Patel has "threatened to do to individual named people." He predicted it's "going to be pretty hard to explain."
