By MARC LEVY HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Democratic Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania conceded his reelection bid to Republican David McCormick on Thursday, as a statewide recount showed no signs of closing the gap and his campaign suffered repeated blows in court in its effort to get potentially favorable ballots counted. Casey’s concession comes more than two weeks after Election Day, as a grindingly slow ballot-counting process became a spectacle of hours-long election board meetings, social media outrage, lawsuits and accusations that some county officials were openly flouting the law. Republicans had been claiming that Democrats were trying to steal McCormick’s seat by counting “illegal votes.” Casey’s campaign had accused of Republicans of trying to block enough votes to prevent him from pulling ahead and winning. In a statement, Casey said he had just called McCormick to congratulate him. “As the first count of ballots is completed, Pennsylvanians can move forward with the knowledge that their voices were heard, whether their vote was the first to be counted or the last,” Casey said. The Associated Press called the race for McCormick on Nov. 7, concluding that not enough ballots remained to be counted in areas Casey was winning for him to take the lead. As of Thursday, McCormick led by about 16,000 votes out of almost 7 million ballots counted. That was well within the 0.5% margin threshold to trigger an automatic statewide recount under Pennsylvania law. But no election official expected a recount to change more than a couple hundred votes or so, and Pennsylvania’s highest court dealt him a blow when it refused entreaties to allow counties to count mail-in ballots that lacked a correct handwritten date on the return envelope. Republicans will have a 53-47 majority next year in the U.S. Senate. Follow Marc Levy at twitter.com/timelywriterThe NFL has fined Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II $11,255 for unnecessary roughness against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 11. Surtain was flagged late in the third quarter for inadvertently grabbing Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts' facemask on a tackle. The penalty was actually offset due to an illegal formation on Atlanta. The Falcons ended up punting on the drive, and the Broncos routed them to a 38-6 final score. Surtain obviously didn't mean to grab Pitts' facemask, but fair or unfair, the NFL is cracking down hard on any contact with a player's head or face. Fortunately for Surtain, he just received a four-year, $96 million contract extension from Denver back in September. Sutain won't dwell on this fine for long, if at all. He and the Broncos have bigger things to worry about, like staying in the AFC playoff picture. Denver currently holds the No. 7 and final wildcard spot, but the Indianapolis Colts are hot on it's heels, just one game back. The Broncos need to take care of business this week against the Las Vegas Raiders - as well as next week against the Cleveland Browns - before a huge Week 14 showdown against the Colts. Denver is hot, winners of four of it's last five games, and were an eyelash away from beating the Kansas City Chiefs two weeks ago. Tiger Woods could not offer much of a timetable Tuesday on PGA Tour negotiations with the Saudi backers of LIV Golf or his own future as a player. Woods is the tournament host of the Hero World Challenge this week, and that's his only role at Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas. He has played the holiday tournament only once since 2019, missing this year while recovering from a sixth surgery on his lower back. “I'm not tournament sharp yet, no. I'm still not there,” Woods said. “These are 20 of the best players in the world and I'm not sharp enough to compete against them at this level. So when I'm ready to compete and play at this level, then I will.” A big part of his time is occupied by PGA Tour business matters. Woods was appointed to the PGA Tour board a year ago with no term limits, and he also is on the board of the commercial PGA Tour Enterprises. There has been movement on negotiations for the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia to become a minority investor in PGA Tour Enterprises — the tour already has a $1.5 billion investment from Strategic Sports Group and a player equity program. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan played in the Dunhill Links Championship on the European tour with the PIF governor, Yasir Al-Rumayyan. Monahan also played golf with President-elect Donald Trump, who had said he could fix golf's mess in about 15 minutes. “I think all of us who have been a part of this process would have thought it would have happened quicker than this,” Woods said. He suggested any deal still would have required Justice Department approval. “But things are very fluid, we’re still working through it, it’s happening daily,” Woods said. “From a policy board standpoint or from an enterprise standpoint, things are moving and they’re constructive.” In the meantime, Bloomberg reported last week the European tour is talking with PIF separately, leading to suggestions of a shared schedule in which players from the European tour and LIV Golf could play on each circuit. “We all want to get past this and to do what’s best for the tour and in trying to do that, there’s going to be ... some eggs are going to be knocked over and it’s going to be a little bit difficult at times,” Woods said. “But in the end we’re going to get a product that’s better for all the fans and all the players that are involved and get some peace that the game desperately needs.” As for his own future, Woods was not certain. He was not asked if he planned to play in two weeks at the PNC Championship with his son, Charlie. It's a 36-hole event hosted by the PGA Tour Champions, so Woods could ride in a cart. He has played it each of the last four years. He looked back at 2024 as a lost year, primarily because of his ailing back that began to spasm as the year went on. Woods had set a goal of playing a big tournament once a month through the majors season, but that fell apart early when he missed The Players Championship in March. He set a Masters record by making his 24th consecutive cut, but then only played at the next three majors and was gone by the weekend at each of them. He had a microdiscectomy in September to alleviate pain down his legs, but he had no idea how often he could play in 2025. “Whether my commitment going forward is once a month, yeah, I could say that all over again,” Woods said. "But I truly don’t know. I’m just trying to rehab and still get stronger and better and feel better, really give myself the best chance I can going into next year. “This year, I had to toss it away and I wasn’t as sharp as I needed to be and I didn’t play as much as I needed to going into the major championships and I didn’t play well at them,” he said. “Hopefully next year will be better. I’ll be physically stronger and better. I know the procedure helped and hopefully that I can then build upon that.”Roofing Chemicals Market which was USD 119 Billion in 2022 is expected to reach USD 218.63 Billion by 2030 and is expected to undergo a CAGR of 7.90% 11-21-2024 09:08 PM CET | Advertising, Media Consulting, Marketing Research Press release from: Data Bridge Market Research Private Ltd "Global Roofing Chemicals Market, By Type (Asphalt/Bituminous, Acrylic Resin, Epoxy Resin, Styrene, Elastomers), Application (Membrane Roofing, Elastomeric Roofing, Bituminous Roofing, Metal Roofing, Plastic (PVC) Roofing) - Industry Trends and Forecast to 2030. You’ve got to hand it to the Nobel Prize in Literature committee: its citations are masterpieces of brevity and precision. Entire lifetimes of tireless, painstaking effort, thousands of pages written over decades, are summed up in a statement of around 20 words. The work of Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk , the 2018 Nobel Laureate, is a case in point. The hallowed Swedish academy awarded her the prize “for a narrative imagination that with encyclopedic passion represents the crossing of boundaries as a form of life”. That’s 18 words, if you’re counting. These qualities are richly in evidence across her varied output, which includes not only the novels for which she is principally known, but short stories, poetry and non-fiction. The Empusium – her first novel since The Books of Jacob , the 900-page opus that clinched her the Nobel – marks the latest instalment in this unique writer’s journey across boundaries, driven by her insatiable curiosity about the human condition and the physical world. Review: The Empusium: A Health Resort Horror Story – Olga Tokarczuk, translated by Antonia Lloyd-Jones (Text Publishing) The Empusium’s premise is both ingenious and intriguing. It is best summed up in the novel’s subtitle: “A health resort horror story.” Taking as its departure point Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain (1924) – a canonical example of Mitteleuropean proto-existentialism – The Empusium is a deft new take on the novel of ideas and convalescence. It provides not only a feminist reworking of Mann’s themes, but a trip into the mythic and phantasmagorical, with a detour into murder mystery thrown in for good measure. It is September 1913 and the young engineering student Mieczyslaw Wojnicz has just arrived at a sanitorium in Görbersdorf (then part of Germany, now in west Poland), where he is to be treated for tuberculosis. Our hero stays in the quaint Guest House for Gentleman, situated high in the Silesian mountains and surrounded by deep forest. There he undergoes various cures and sits about drinking, sometimes to the point of semi-stupefaction, the magic-mushroom infused liqueur Schwärmerei , which he and the other guests are encouraged to imbibe in copious amounts. It is the perfect scenario for Tokarzcuk’s narrative. She weaves together a complex tapestry of philosophical musings, misogynistic early 20th-century beliefs, and a mysterious series of bloody, ritualistic murders. In keeping with the homosocial norms of the time, Wojnicz’s companions in convalescence are all men. Principal among them are a Catholic traditionalist named Longin Lukas, a social humanist named August August, and a theosophist named Walter Frommer. When the men aren’t getting sauced on Schwärmerei , undergoing their treatments, taking mountain walks, or tucking into generous meals of roast meat, salted herring and blackberry compote, they talk and talk. Their musings often circle back to the topic of women, the discussions ranging greatly in their degree of chauvinism. It is usually the German Catholic who can be relied on to champion patriarchy at its regressive worst. “Woman,” Lukas opines, drawing on Darwin, is like an evolutionary laggard. While man has gone on ahead and acquired new capabilities, woman has stayed in her old place and does not develop. This is why a woman is handicapped, incapable of coping on her own... On and on it goes. Women are deemed public property because they bear children. Women have a duty to satisfy male desire because, if deprived of “the means of relief”, men would fall ill. Even the sanatorium’s doctor gets in on the act. According to Dr Semperweiss, mothers can be particularly dangerous, infecting their children “with excessive emotionality, which eventually leads to all sort of illnesses and feebleness of spirit”. Woynicz, our sensitive, mild-mannered young hero, does not join in this chorus, and not only for reasons of a moderate temperament or illness. He also harbours a secret that puts him at odds with the norms of the time. His gentler masculinity offers welcome relief from all this pernicious hairy-chested posturing. It becomes evident in his friendship with the seriously ill art student Thilo, with whom he strikes up a caring, tender relationship – one that provides great comfort to Thilo as his condition becomes increasingly critical. Horror and myth The subtitle promises horror, but readers expecting a riff on contemporary gore will be disappointed. While there are some blood-and-guts moments – for example, the exploding duck-heart soup served up to Wojnicz in a country inn – Tokarczuk’s take on the horror genre is mainly in terms of atmospherics. In a setting that is all mountains, deep forest and villages, she draws inspiration from sources reminiscent of Grimm’s fairy tales and medieval Gothic, with a dash of Grand Guignol and a bigger dash of Greek myth. Tokarczuk excels at the creepy and the unsettling, as evidenced in the Tuntschi that Wojnicz stumbles upon in his solitary walks in the forest. The Tuntschi are female sex “puppets” assembled from forest debris by men who work in the woods. They make these doll-like figures with twigs, stones and leaves, complete with fully functioning nether regions fashioned from moss where they find sexual relief. According to legend, the mistreated dolls can come to life and seek revenge on their abusers. The novel is populated by other mythical female entities, who pop up from time to time. They appear as an omniscient agency that watches the goings on in the sanatorium, though their relationship to the main action is ambiguous. As mystical beings, they bear witness to the machinations of poor misguided humanity from on high, but they intermittently crash the narrative, somewhat like the Eumenides (the Furies of ancient Greek myth) in T.S. Eliot’s play The Family Reunion . There is also a reference to the Empusa : the entity that gives the novel its title. This shapeshifting female figure with a leg of bronze, also drawn from Greek mythology, is referred to as a monster. Taken together, these various female – sometimes beyond gendered – forces constitute an alternate realm, a world beyond the world, which looms in and out of view like a set of movable clues in a detective story. Tokarczuk seems to be suggesting they represent a kind of world-in-waiting, a vitalist dimension of human experience and potential that will only be liberated once we overcome our prejudices and learn to tolerate difference. A fascinating duality The novel’s multi-layered, multi-genre story is rendered in what is often first-rate prose. Tokarczuk displays a Nabokovian facility with language. Her writing is rich, yet also disciplined and restrained, full of striking imagery, inventive metaphors and poetic observations. Describing the main sanatorium building, she writes: “the sharp, pseudo-Gothic turrets reminded Wojnicz of a gramophone needle, extracting concealed sounds from the record of the sky.” The novel’s setting is a place she knows well: Tokarczuk grew up in its vicinity. It shows in her vivid evocations of the sharpness of the mountain air, the light on the lakes, the earthy scent of the forest floor when her characters go hiking and mushroom picking. The Empusium is a hard book to classify. That is part of its design and charm. Tokarczuk has stated that she is resistant to genre practices and categorisations, seeing them as complicit in the standardising effects of the publishing industry and barriers to creative expression. However we might read her attitude, it is clear she is determined to dismantle the guardrails of genre and to follow her own instincts. Her quirky, ebullient imagination thrives in this environment of self-mandated risk-taking. Underlying her freewheeling approach is a clarity of vision, oriented towards social justice and compassion for humanity. The way she assembles disparate elements always has a purpose, both political and aesthetic. She is not an iconoclast for its own sake, but always seeks some higher understanding, some fresh new angle, on an issue of importance. Above all, The Empusium abundantly demonstrates that there is a fascinating duality in Tokarczuk’s grasp of the world. Her sensibility values both mythos and logos, the liminal and the defined, the sharp focus and the blur. It helps that she is such an accomplished writer. In lesser hands, a novel constructed along these lines could easily fall apart. With one hand, Tokarczuk confidently guides the reader through the scenes and settings of her finely etched narrative; with the other, she gently ushers us into themes of near-cosmic indeterminacy, the main impetus driving the imagination of this vital, necessary writer.

BOSTON (AP) — Forty years ago, Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie rolled to his right and threw a pass that has become one of college football’s most iconic moments. With Boston College trailing defending champion Miami, , who made the grab while falling into the end zone behind a pair of defenders for a game-winning 48-yard TD. Flutie and many of his 1984 teammates were honored on the field during BC’s game against North Carolina before the second quarter on Saturday afternoon, the anniversary of the Eagles’ Miracle in Miami. “There’s no way its been 40 years,” Flutie told The Associated Press on the sideline a few minutes before he walked out with some of his former teammates to be recognized after a video of The Play was shown on the scoreboards. It’s a moment and highlight that’s not only played throughout decades of BC students and fans, but around the college football world. “What is really so humbling is that the kids 40 years later are wearing 22 jerseys, still,” Flutie said of his old number. “That amazes me.” That game was played on national TV the Friday after Thanksgiving. The ironic thing is it was originally scheduled for earlier in the season before CBS paid Rutgers to move its game against Miami, thus setting up the BC-Miami post-holiday matchup. “It shows you how random some things are, that the game was moved,” Flutie said. “The game got moved to the Friday after Thanksgiving, which was the most watched game of the year. We both end up being nationally ranked and up there. All those things lent to how big the game itself was, and made the pass and the catch that much more relevant and remembered because so many people were watching.” There’s a statue of Flutie winding up to make The Pass outside the north gates at Alumni Stadium. Fans and visitors can often be seen taking photos there. “In casual conversation, it comes up every day,” Flutie said, when asked how many times people bring it up. “It brings a smile to my face every time we talk about it.” A week after the game-ending Flutie pass, the Eagles beat Holy Cross and before he flew off to New York to accept the Heisman. They went on to win the 49th Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day. “Forty years seem almost like incomprehensible,” said Phalen, also standing on the sideline a few minutes after the game started. “I always say to Doug: ‘Thank God for social media. It’s kept it alive for us.”’ Earlier this week, current BC coach Bill O’Brien, 55, was asked if he remembered where he was 40 years ago. “We were eating Thanksgiving leftovers in my family room,” he said. “My mom was saying a Rosary in the kitchen because she didn’t like Miami and wanted BC to win. My dad, my brother and I were watching the game. “It was unbelievable,” he said. “Everybody remembers where they were for the Hail Mary, Flutie pass.” ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. A year ago at this time, he was in the process of putting together the most efficient season of his NFL career with a personal best 105.9 passer rating en route to leading the NFL with 36 touchdown passes and the Cowboys to a 12-5 regular season for the third year in a row. Now, Dallas is 5-7, after Prescott suffered a season-ending hamstring injury that required him traveling up to New York for surgery. On Tuesday, Prescott celebrated the small victory of being able to drive again for the first time since the procedure in November. "I feel good. Still on the crutches. I'll be on the crutches for a little bit longer but starting to walk a little bit more with my weight," Prescott told CBS Sports on Tuesday. "Getting to drive today, that's something new. So that's a step. It's a little goal in the process but yeah, start starting to be able to do more, which is fun for me and now I can start collecting my small victories." The next major item of his recovery check list is simply being able to drop his crutches for both a few physical therapy exercises and then eventually full-time weight-bearing on his own. Despite suffering the second season-ending injury of his career to his lower body -- his gruesome ankle fracture in 2020 and the hamstring tear in 2024 -- Prescott doesn't see much of stylistic change to the way he plays the quarterback position going forward. He's looking to get back to his 2023 play after registering an 86.0 passer rating, the lowest of his nine-year career, while throwing for 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions and completing 64.7% of his passes, the second-lowest completion percentage of his career. "I don't think it will change much," Prescott said of his injury. "I think I honestly this rehab being such a hamstring, a runner's injury, the fact of me feeling 100% is going to take a lot of running and a lot of me getting confidence back and using my legs. I think just with that rehab naturally coming back next year adding on to the passing game, everything I'm gonna work on with my accuracy, I know I'll play much better than I did this year. I think you'll see a lot more of what you saw last year, if not even using my legs a tad bit more and not particularly on quarterback running plays, but just within the passing game and to keep us ahead of the chains." So when might Prescott return? Well, thanks to him opting to get the surgery done right away instead of fighting through rehab to get back this season, Dak could be back for the start of Dallas' offseason program. "My plan is to start OTAs and start the offseason no restrictions, full go," Prescott said. That's part in getting this jump on this surgery that we thought was inevitable anyways. At that point, just doing everything I can to be the best quarterback and leader of this team to help this team come in next year with the best outfit that we can." Going to bat for Mike McCarthy and free agency help Any head coach-starting quarterback relationship in the NFL is going to be a deep one, at least for successful partnerships. Prescott's with Cowboys head coach and offensive play caller Mike McCarthy's is no different in terms of football, but their friendship also extends beyond work. Prescott allowed McCarthy to hold his baby girl M.J. after training camp practices in Oxnard, California while chatting with his family, and Prescott went with McCarthy to the head coach's family home in Pittsburgh ahead of the team's Week 5 showdown with the Steelers . Given his MVP-caliber season in 2023, McCarthy's first as his Cowboys play caller, and the numerous injuries to himself, cornerback DaRon Bland (foot stress fracture), edge rusher DeMarcus Lawrence (foot), edge rusher Micah Parsons (high ankle sprain), right guard Zack Martin (ankle/shoulder), cornerback Trevon Diggs (groin/knee) and wide receiver Brandin Cooks (knee) just to name a few, Prescott plans to go to bat to Jerry and Stephen Jones on McCarthy's behalf to try and get him a new Cowboys coaching contract after his initial, five-year deal expires at season's end. Dallas went 12-5 in all three seasons of McCarthy's five-year tenure that Prescott finished the year upright. "Obviously I'm going to make that case first and foremost everything that he's had to battle," Prescott said. "This year being a contract year on top of hell, it just being a contract year and the pressure that that has going into that into the offseason and now carrying into the season and then on top of that, right, the injury bug has hit us large in part. ... I'm going to push and be in the corner and pushing for Mike to get a second contract... and just the opportunity to do things more with a healthy team. I'm all for it. It's been tough, and [I] feel helpless in the sense of not being able to help him in a year knowing how big this is, being able to get out there to play well to get victories and even in the games that we played, not being able to play as well or get victories, was very frustrating." Prescott also doesn't believe his new deal will hamper the Cowboys being aggressive to reinforce the roster through free agency, but if he is asked to restructure his deal to add an impact teammate, he would be willing to do it. Jerry Jones repeatedly spoke about his salary cap management this past offseason and how he felt he needed to earmark money for Prescott and All-Pro wide receiver CeeDee Lamb , whom he re-signed to a four-year, $136 million extension. The Cowboys spent an NFL-low $20.13 million in free agency this past offseason, according to OverTheCap.com, which was just over $10 million fewer than the perpetually cap-strapped New Orleans Saints ($30.925 million). "Yeah I don't think my contract is going to withhold us from making any moves or doing anything that we need to in free agency," Prescott said. "However, if that big chess piece or big piece comes up, that will require that or does require that, yeah the way that my contract is structured and the way that I believe in this team, I don't think that would be a problem at all to to move things around to make that happen." Looking back on "definitely one of the toughest" years of Prescott's nine-year career The 2024 calendar year has been, to use Prescott's categorization, a rollercoaster. His individual performance in addition to Dallas winning the NFC East resulted in Prescott being named the 2023 second team All-Pro quarterback and the 2023 NFL MVP runner-up, but the finish to 2023 was marred by a 48-32 wild card round playoff defeat against the Green Bay Packers . This year also brought Prescott a public, months-long contract negotiation between himself and Jerry Jones before Prescott signed a four-year, $240 million extension hours before Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns . That made him the NFL's highest-paid player with an average annual salary of $60 million. He and his partner Sarah Jane also had their first child together in the spring, a daughter named Margaret Jane, and they announced their engagement in October. That came before Prescott suffered his season-ending hamstring injury in Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons . He also categorized 2024 as "definitely one of the toughest" of his NFL career. "It's been a roller coaster, all the highs and then just throwing a couple of lows in there," Prescott said. "For me, it's about counting my blessings and not the trials that I'm going through and facing ... They're all worth it when you come home and you see Margaret Jane and Sarah Jane and you get to be home. You forget about all that and take that perspective in and get to be a father and a fiancé for a second. .... It's about for me about trying to just stay level and not ride quite the highs and the lows as much." Prescott spoke with CBS Sports in promoting his partnership with DICK's Sporting Goods to decorate a Dallas location in an effort to help local youth sports organizations through DICK'S Sports Matter philanthropy grants. The Cowboys quarterback entered a Texas-wide store decorating competition against Team USA Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Simone Biles (Houston) , San Antonio Spurs point guard Chris Paul (San Antonio) , and University Of Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers (Austin) to help raise money for local area youth sports. "It's to represent this great city of Dallas as we did flip the Denton DICK's Sports into the Blue and Silver Christmas theme. More importantly, it's about getting a victory against those other three cities ... excited for my part in it," Prescott said. "It was all awesome, so being able to be a part of this in a philanthropic effort, giving back to the Sports Matter grant, $100,000 for the youth sports is awesome, and [I] didn't take a moment for granted."British Journalism Awards winners 2024: Channel 4 News named best news provider, Caroline Wheeler is journalist of the year
