The Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation filed a claim Thursday in B.C. Supreme Court seeking a return of decision-making, resource and ecological stewardship, said Chief Mike Maquinna, a descendent of the former Chief Maquinna who met British explorer Capt. James Cook in 1776. Crown-authorized forest industry activities approved by the province without the consent of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation have resulted in cultural, economic and environmental impacts, he said at a news conference on Thursday. "Our people, the Mowachaht/Muchalaht, have endured many hardships since first meeting Capt. Cook, who was the explorer who first came into our territory," said Maquinna. "As a result of the explorations of our territory, the natural resources of our lands have been taken. We want to correct rights and wrongs here and hopefully as time goes on this will show that Mowachaht/Muchalaht has been infringed upon since time of contact." Capt. Cook and Chief Maquinna met in March 1776 at the traditional Mowachaht/Muchalaht whale-hunting village of Yuquot, later named Friendly Cove by Cook. The Parks Canada website says Yuquot was designated a national historic site in 1923 as the ancestral home of the First Nation, which was continuously occupied for more than 4,300 years and the centre of their social, political and economic world. The Parks Canada website says the village became the capital for all 17 tribes of the Nootka Sound region. Maquinna said the province has been acting as the sole decision-making authority in the Gold River-Tahsis areas of northern Vancouver Island, especially with regards to the forest resource, without the consent of his nation. Hereditary Chief Jerry Jack said the claim seeks title to about 430,000 hectares of land on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island and an amount of financial compensation to be determined by the court. "It is common knowledge we were here long before Capt. Cook and now we have to go to court and definitively prove that," he said. "I don't like that we have to prove that we owned it before he showed up to my territory, to my beach." The land title case does not make any claims against private land owners, homeowners or recreational hunting and fishing operators, said Jack. Premier David Eby said the B.C. government prefers negotiated land-claims settlements rather than become involved in lengthy, expensive court cases, but the Mowachaht/Muchalaht have the right to take that route. "We have no problem with them doing that," he said at an unrelated news conference in Langley. "We'd rather sit down and find a path forward." The 15-page notice of claim seeks declarations that the First Nation has Aboriginal title to its lands and that B.C.'s Forest Act and Land Act will no longer apply to Mowachaht/Muchalaht lands once title is declared. Jack said the nation decided against pursuing formal treaty talks with the federal and provincial government years ago and has been planning the land title court case "for many decades." I know, I know, it’s the “offseason.” The CME Tour Championship and Tour Championship are behind us. But that doesn’t mean you can ignore the golf. This week, LPGA and PGA Tour pros are teaming up at the Grant Thornton, meaning we will get a ton of good content, like when Disney Channel had those crossover episodes when we were kids. As much as I love watching PGA Tour events and LPGA Tour events on their own, there’s something special about players from each coming together for a week. It’s definitely a competitive atmosphere at Tiburon, but a big part of it leans into bonding and fun. The pros’ personalities are going to be on display in ways we aren’t usually used to over the next few weeks. Team events tend to bring these out, and the Grant Thornton is no exception. Same thing with the PNC Championship. The pros may be at work, but in a “bring-your-kid-to-work” kind of way. It’s more about the shared experience than anything else. So make sure you’re paying attention to social media over the next 10 days or so, because I have a feeling we are going to get some hilarious, wholesome and fun content from both he Grant Thornton and the PNC. (Remember, Tiger’s “big dog” meme originated at the PNC.) This last note really only applies to those who attend the Grant Thornton and/or PNC Championship, but I’ve learned there are few things I enjoy more than being at a Ritz-Carlton golf course, especially near the holidays. There are endless places to explore, and you can’t beat the food or clubhouse. A wholesome press conference My favorite part of Thursday at the Grant Thornton Invitational was Lydia Ko and Jason Day’s press conference. It’s clear the defending champions are giddy to be back, but it’s even more clear how much Day and Ko respect and admire each other. A few excerpts from the transcript: Day: I’ve heard numerous — actually, a lot of stories about how she’s one of the nicest people on the LPGA and obviously I think a lot of people know that by now. Pure class on and off the golf course. Ko: I remember Jessica Korda was like, oh, you’re playing with Jason, right? She was like, you’re playing with the nicest person in the world, you guys are going to be the nicest team. Ko: When I played the Tour Championship a few weeks ago, I was like, man, it would be nice if I had a partner like Jason, it would just make my life a lot easier. Day: I’m a massive fan of Lydia and her game. More so as a person as well, she’s tremendous. Ko: I actually told multiple people this, of all the players I’ve played with, Jason’s game, whether it was ball-striking, with the driver, iron, wedges and putting overall was actually the best player I’ve seen. Environmental and social factors are the main barriers stopping people from taking action on their weight, according to a survey. The latest Time to Talk Public Health survey found that 'too many temptations' was the biggest barrier for people trying to maintain a healthy weight. 29 per cent of respondents chose 'temptations' from a list of 11 barriers, more than any other option. 19 per cent said they don't have enough time, and 17 per cent said their job stops them from taking action. Just seven per cent said a lack of cooking skills, and only five per cent said insufficient knowledge were barriers. 66 per cent of respondents said they are heavier than they want to be, with 88 per cent of these people intending to take action on their weight. The findings highlight the need to make it easier for people to make healthy choices. They follow a 2023 Public Health Wales survey which showed strong public support in Wales (57 per cent) for government action to make the food we buy healthier. Dr Ilona Johnson, consultant in public health at Public Health Wales, said: "These findings are helpful as we can see that many people in Wales recognise they may be above a healthy weight, and are either intending to, or are already, taking action to change this. "However, people are also highlighting the challenges, saying that it is not about intention or willpower, and that our modern-day living environment can make it difficult to reach or be a healthier weight. "They want to take action on their weight, but they feel their environment is working against them because they are surrounded by high energy food that is low in nutrients." Chiapas Gov. Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar said on his social media channels that the findings came as the result of a raid in the city of La Concordia, near Mexico 's border with Guatemala . He said four people connected to the case had been arrested with weapons and drugs. The state prosecutor’s office said in a statement that the raid took place in two different properties. The first site had three bodies in three graves and in the second, eight graves with 12 bodies. “It is worth mentioning that for these operations technological tools such as drones and geo-radars were used, in addition to aerial overflight, ground search, field forensics, back-excavation and drills,” it said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement, first reported by the New York Post, was subject to a successful physical. Soto’s deal is the largest and longest in Major League Baseball history, topping Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million, 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a deal signed last December. That agreement included $680 million in deferred payments and is valued at just under $46.1 million for baseball’s luxury tax. Soto’s agreement, struck with a team controlled by MLB’s wealthiest owner in Steve Cohen, does not include deferred money, the person said. Its length tops Fernando Tatis Jr.’s $340 million, 14-year contract with San Diego that runs through 2034. A four-time All-Star at age 26, Soto is the most accomplished free agent at that age since shortstop Alex Rodriguez agreed to a record $252 million, 10-year contract with Texas in December 2000 at age 25. Soto was 19 when he made his major league debut with Washington in 2018 and helped the Nationals win the World Series the following year, when he hit .282 with 34 homers and 110 RBIs. He turned down Washington’s $440 million, 15-year offer in 2022 and was traded that August to San Diego . Following the death of Padres owner Peter Seidler , Soto was dealt to the Yankees in December 2023 and helped New York reach the World Series for the first time since 2009. Soto batted .288 with 41 homers, 109 RBIs and 129 walks, hitting second in the batting order ahead of Aaron Judge to power an offense that led the major leagues with 237 homers. He hit a go-ahead homer in the AL Championship Series opener against Cleveland and a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the 10th inning that won the pennant against the Guardians in Game 5. Interest in Bluesky exploded after Donald Trump’s re-election to the White House, especially in Europe where concerns about Elon Musk’s tenure and shift politically rightwards drew a wave of disquiet. As an alternative to Twitter (or ‘X’), Bluesky is growing, although its peak interest currenlty only a fraction of Twitter’s current interest. As an expert explains, Bluesky may not be sufficiently differentiated from Twitter and this similarity is probably going to hinder the micro-blogger’s growth. Politically there are differences, with Bluesky being left-leaning and Twitter a right wing platform is attracting tremendous interest from across the globe, including in the UK and the US where Google searches for the service exploded in mid-November. In terms of ownership, Bluesky is classed as a U.S. public benefit corporation. Marketing expert Toni Marino has considered why users are shifting: “The spike in interest in Bluesky arrived after Donald Trump’s re-election to the White House at the start of November. Harris voters wanted a platform that would allow them to connect with other left-leaning users and escape what they see as a right-wing, Musk-led takeover of Twitter.” Marino continues, considering the two platforms from the U.S. context: “However, we need to put Bluesky’s rise in context. While the platform is growing, it is still small fry compared to Twitter. US searches for the service are around 10 percent of those for Twitter in most states, even during the last election month, meaning Bluesky still has a long way to go if it wants to compete. Twitter has an established user base and an audience who know and love the platform. It is difficult to imagine a usurper replacing it outright because it is so embedded in the culture.” Marino does not mention Europe or the UK, where Blusky has been growing more rapidly. Driven by strong growth from outside of the U.S., Bluesky is growing rapidly and is currently picking up around one million new sign-ups a day. Moving on to how Blusky might grow, Marino sees coming up with something distinctive as the key: “If Bluesky is to compete with Twitter, it will need to differentiate itself somehow. Donald Trump’s Truth Social did this by leaning more into right-wing politics. Bluesky could do the same–providing an outlet for left-wing views.” Bluesky was created in 2019 as a research project within Twitter led by then-CEO Jack Dorsey. It eventually severed ties with Twitter and became an independent company following Musk’s acquisition. This evolution is one reason why the two platforms have a similar design and function. Marino also thinks: “Bluesky could also do what Snapchat did to Instagram by adding new and innovative features. When Snapchat launched Stories, Instagram was forced to respond. You could see something similar playing out here.” In his closing view, Marino considers finance: “If Bluesky is to succeed, it will need to find a way to monetize its content, something Twitter finds a struggle to this day.
