Stocks shook off a choppy start to finish higher Monday, as Wall Street kicked off a holiday-shortened week. The S&P 500 ended 0.7% higher after having been down 0.5% in the early going. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also recovered from an early slide to eke out a 0.2% gain. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite rose 1%. Gains in technology and communications stocks accounted for much of the gains, outweighing losses in consumer goods companies and elsewhere in the market. Semiconductor giant Nvidia, whose enormous valuation gives it an outsize influence on indexes, rose 3.7%. Broadcom climbed 5.5% to also help support the broader market. Walmart fell 2% and PepsiCo slid 1%. Japanese automakers Honda and Nissan said they are talking about combining in a deal that might also include Mitsubishi Motors. U.S.-listed shares in Honda jumped 12.7%, while Nissan ended flat. Eli Lilly rose 3.7% after announcing that regulators approved Zepbound as the first and only prescription medicine for adults with sleep apnea. Department store Nordstrom fell 1.5% after it agreed to be taken private by Nordstrom family members and a Mexican retail group in a $6.25 billion deal. All told, the S&P 500 rose 43.22 points to 5,974.07. The Dow gained 66.69 points to 42,906.95. The Nasdaq rose 192.29 points to 19,764.89. Traders got a look at a new snapshot of U.S. consumer confidence Monday. The Conference Board said that consumer confidence slipped in December. Its consumer confidence index fell back to 104.7 from 112.8 in November. Wall Street was expecting a reading of 113.8. The unexpectedly weak consumer confidence update follows several generally strong economic reports last week. One report showed the overall economy grew at a 3.1% annualized rate during the summer, faster than earlier thought. The latest report on unemployment benefit applications showed that the job market remains solid. A report on Friday said a measure of inflation the Federal Reserve likes to use was slightly lower last month than economists expected. Worries about inflation edging higher again had been weighing on Wall Street and the Fed. The central bank just delivered its third cut to interest rates this year, but inflation has been hovering stubbornly above its target of 2%. It has signaled that it could deliver fewer cuts to interest rates next year than it earlier anticipated because of concerns over inflation. Expectations for more interest rate cuts have helped drive a roughly 25% gain for the S&P 500 in 2024. That drive included 57 all-time highs this year. Inflation concerns have added to uncertainties heading into 2025, which include the labor market's path ahead and shifting economic policies under an incoming President Donald Trump. "Put simply, much of the strong market performance prior to last week was driven by expectations that a best-case scenario was the base case for 2025," said Brent Schutte, chief investment officer at Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Company Treasury yields rose in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.59% from 4.53% late Friday. European markets closed mostly lower, while markets in Asia gained ground. Wall Street has several other economic reports to look forward to this week. On Tuesday, the U.S. will release its November report for sales of newly constructed homes. A weekly update on unemployment benefits is expected on Thursday. Markets in the U.S. will close at 1 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday for Christmas Eve and will remain closed on Wednesday for Christmas.US expected to send £1 billion in weapons to Ukraine before Trump takes office

PONTIAC—Benet’s Daniel Pauliukonis may be the area’s most under-the-radar Division I recruit. The 6-9 senior, signed with SIU, had some nice games last season, and sparkled in club basketball over the summer. His full arsenal of skills was displayed in a 58-44 win against Bloom in the quarterfinals of the 93rd Pontiac Holiday Tournament on Friday . Pauliukonis finished with 20 points and six rebounds. He scored on threes, midrange jumpers, takes to the basket and post moves. “I got off to a good start so that was nice, got in my groove,” Pauliukonis said. “In the second half when they started face-guarding me I set some screens and helped get the other guys open.” Pauliukonis scored 18 in the first half to help the Redwings jump out to a 34-20 halftime lead. Benet stayed in control throughout the second half. “Daniel played great,” Benet coach Gene Heidkamp said. “In the second half, they tagged him. They face-guarded him with Elijah Lovemore. They made a concerted effort to take him out of the game.” Senior Blake Fagbemi had 14 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Redwings. Junior Jayden Wright added 10 points and four assists. Fagbemi and Wright provide Benet with a dynamic, dependable backcourt that complements the size of Pauliukonis and 7-2 junior Colin Stack (nine points, eight rebounds). Gabe Sularski, one of the state’s top juniors, transferred from Benet to Lemont over the summer. The Redwings (12-1) have replaced his offense seamlessly. And unlike some of Benet’s previous successful teams, this group isn’t reliant on three-pointers. “There is more balance,” Heidkamp said. “We have a ways to go defensively. But offensively we have a little bit more balance and diversity. We can score around the rim more. We have guys that can slash and get to the rim.” Sophomore Xavier Martin led Bloom (8-3) with 13 points and Adam Page added 12 points and eight rebounds. Benet will face Simeon in the semifinals on Saturday.Freiburg survives late onslaught to beat Wolfsburg in Bundesliga thrillerHigh school recruiting isn't the only way to build a winner in the transfer portal era
The NBA warned players to safeguard valuables against "well-organized, sophisticated" transnational crime rings, according to a memo obtained by NBC News on Friday, matching a similar caution issued earlier this week by the NFL . Security officials with two of the world's most prominent professional sports leagues are on edge following a series of brazen home break-ins that've targeted some of their sports' most well known players. Leon Newsome, the NBA's senior vice president and chief security officer, told league presidents and general managers that league officials have been briefed by FBI agents, who warned that "professional athletes and other high-net-worth individuals" are increasingly being hit by "transnational South American Theft Groups (“SATGs”)." "These SATGs are reportedly well-organized, sophisticated rings that incorporate advanced techniques and technologies, including pre-surveillance, drones, and signal jamming devices," according to Newsome. "The SATGs are primarily focused on cash and items that can be resold on the black market, such as jewelry, watches, and luxury bags. The FBI reported that, in most of the incidents, the homes were equipped with alarm systems that were not activated. The FBI also reported that the homes were all unoccupied and, in most cases, no dogs were present." The NBA memo did not name any victims. But the missive was sent this week, in the wake of recent reported burglaries of Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis , Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley Jr. and Kansas City Chiefs teammates Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce . Earlier this week, the NFL told players to be mindful about publicly sharing any information about their whereabouts, homes and luxury items they might own. "The homes of professional athletes across multiple sports leagues have become increasingly targeted for burglaries by organized and skilled groups," the NFL memo said. "It is important for players to maintain situational awareness, practice social media safety and implement home security measures to reduce risk of becoming a target."Penguins prospect Tanner Howe named to Canada's IIHF World Junior Championship rosterJaishankar, Blinken review advancement of US-India partnership

NEW DELHI: In July 2008, then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rose in Parliament to defend his embattled government in the face of a no-confidence motion. “Whatever I have done in this high office, I have done so with a clear conscience and the best interests of my country and our people at heart,” he said. The motion fell, and Singh completed two full terms in office. Sixteen years later, political and ideological boundaries collapsed as leaders united in tribute to Singh. Allies, opponents, world leaders, intellectuals, sportspersons and millions of common Indians paid homage to the two-time prime minister and former finance minister on Friday, hailing him as a “visionary” and an “outstanding statesman”. Flags flew at half-mast across the national capital on a gloomy, overcast day and scores poured into Singh’s 3, Motilal Nehru Road residence, where his body was kept in state. His wife Gursharan Kaur and other family members stood by his body, which was draped in the Tricolour, as people of all hues, including President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi paid their last respects. Sonia Gandhi, who heads the Congress Parliamentary Party, called him her “friend, philosopher and guide”. “A luminous and beloved guiding light for the Congress party, his compassion and vision transformed and empowered the lives of millions of Indians,” she said. Several, including Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, left notes in a condolence book in the drawing room of his house, where he spent the final decade of his life after moving out of the official prime minister’s residence in 2014. Tributes also poured in from across the globe, as former presidents, prime ministers and diplomats recollected their interactions with the soft-spoken economist, who died aged 92 of age-related ailments. Social media was awash with images of Singh in his unmistakable powder-blue turban as people celebrated his transformative effect on the Indian economy after he broke the shackles of the Licence Raj as finance minister in 1991 and lay down social security measures for India’s poorest classes as prime minister between 2004 and 2014. Singh’s body will be taken from his residence to the Congress’s Akbar Road headquarters at 8am on Saturday, where the public will be allowed to pay their condolences. At 9.30am, a funeral procession will proceed to Nigambodh Ghat. There, he will be laid to rest with full State honours at 11.45am. The Union cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi met at 11am and paid tributes to “an eminent statesman, renowned economist and a distinguished leader” who “left his imprint on our national life.” The Centre had on Thursday declared a week of national mourning. Separately, in a video eulogy, Modi remembered Singh as a remarkable human being whose journey from Partition-era displacement to India’s highest office embodied the nation’s resilient spirit. “His humility, gentleness, and intellectualism became the hallmark of his parliamentary life. I remember that earlier this year when his term in the Rajya Sabha came to an end, I said that his dedication as a parliamentarian was an inspiration to all. Despite his age, he would attend important sessions in a wheelchair and fulfil his parliamentary duties,” Modi said. He later laid a wreath at Singh’s residence and offered condolences to his wife, Kaur. Union ministers Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, Rajnath Singh and Hardeep Puri also visited the residence, as did BJP chief JP Nadda. Chief ministers MK Stalin (Tamil Nadu), Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu (Himachal Pradesh) and Revanth Reddy (Telangana) also reached Delhi to pay their respects. Vice-president Jagdeep Dhankhar met Singh’s family and “acknowledged his enduring legacy”, his office said in a statement, while former president Ram Nath Kovind called Singh “a modern reformer for the Indian economy”. A raft of foreign leaders and statesmen articulated their memories of the Cambridge- and Oxford-educated technocrat and underscored the efforts Singh made to establish India as a force on the global stage. Singh was “a remarkable man” who made a “major personal contribution to strengthening friendly ties” between the two countries, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a statement. “As Prime Minister and when serving in other high-ranking positions, he accomplished a lot in promoting India’s economic development and asserting its interests on the world stage. He also made a major personal contribution to strengthening friendly ties between our two countries by elevating them to the level of a special privileged strategic partnership... I had the occasion of talking with this remarkable man several times. We will cherish the memory of him,” he said. French President Emmanuel Macron said “India has lost a great man” and France a true friend. “He had devoted his life to his country. Our thoughts are with his family and the people of India,” Macron said on X. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim offered a moving tribute to his former Indian counterpart, calling him, “my mitra (friend), my bhai (brother)”. “During the years of my incarceration, he extended a kindness that he didn’t have to — one that was neither politically expedient nor, as one can imagine, appreciated by the Malaysian government at that time... He offered scholarships for my children, particularly my son, Ihsan. Although I had declined the gracious offer, such a gesture undoubtedly showed his extraordinary humanity and generosity,” said Ibrahim, who was imprisoned between 1999 and 2004, and then from 2015 to 2018. United States secretary of state Antony Blinken called Singh “one of the greatest champions of the bilateral strategic partnership”. “Dr Singh was one of the greatest champions of the US-India strategic partnership, and his work laid the foundation for much of what our countries have accomplished together in the past two decades,” he said. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake called him “a visionary leader”. Tributes also arrived from the leaders of Afghanistan, Maldives, Mauritius, and Nepal, underscoring the indelible footprint that Singh’s legacy left on southeast Asia in particular. Former Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper said he was saddened to learn of the passing. “He was an individual of exceptional intelligence, integrity, and wisdom. Laureen and I wish to convey our condolences to all his family and friends,” Harper said. Several business leaders hailed Singh’s legacy that snapped government control of business and allowed private enterprises to flourish. Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said the nation lost one of its tallest leaders and finest economists. “His most defining contribution — the epochal 91 reforms spurred a multi-decadal economic boom and more importantly reshaped the calculus of possibilities for India and Indians,” Birla said in a statement. Indian industry, economy, and entrepreneurs in particular, owe a debt of gratitude to the liberalisation reforms that were ushered in the early 90s under Manmohan Singh’s leadership, Bharti Enterprises Founder and Chairman Sunil Mittal said. Economists across the world also paid their respects to a luminary in their field, who was also deputy chief of the erstwhile Planning Commission and governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Former World Bank chief economist Kaushik Basu said Singh’s modesty came from “a deep sense of courage and self-confidence.” “He was a combination of sharp intellect, innate modesty and personal integrity, which is rare in politics,” the former chief economic advisor to the Indian government told news agency PTI. Gita Gopinath, first deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), credited Singh with “significantly enhancing the economic prospects for hundreds of millions of Indians”. “His visionary reforms inspired countless young economists like me. Rest in peace, Dr Manmohan Singh,” she said. Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar led the sporting world in paying homage. “Dr Manmohan Singh ji’s demise is a profound loss for India. His contributions to our nation shall always be remembered. My prayers are with his family and loved ones as we mourn his passing away,” he said on X.For Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce , 2024 was a year full of personal, professional and romantic highs. The couple — who began dating in summer 2023 — started and ended 2024 on positive notes. Kelce, 35, and the Kansas City Chiefs took home their second consecutive Super Bowl title in February, while Swift, 35, ended her record-breaking Eras Tour in December. “It can be very lonely at the top,” a source exclusively told Us Weekly earlier this month. “This tour was one of the best [for Taylor] because Travis brightened it up.” Between Kelce’s football games and Swift’s historic shows, the pair also enjoyed plenty of adorable date nights and public shout-outs, including new music from Swift allegedly documenting their romance. While the source told Us that “Taylor does feel like Travis is The One,” the couple are reportedly not looking to take any drastic steps forward in their relationship heading into the new year. “Taylor and Travis are eager to spend quality time together because [that’s when] the little nuances about someone’s personality and habits come into play,” the insider shared. “They will learn so much about each other.” Scroll down for a roundup of Swift and Kelce’s biggest 2024 moments: After the Chiefs defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in a New Year’s Eve, Swift and Kelce rang in 2024 by sharing a midnight kiss at a party in Kansas City. “ It was fun ,” Travis said of the get-together on his and brother Jason Kelce ’s “New Heights” podcast. “It was cool, man, to have all the friends and family [there]. I think I had over 50, 55 people come in for this one.” On January 28, Swift traveled to Maryland to cheer on the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game against the Baltimore Ravens. After Travis’ team secured their Super Bowl spot, Swift congratulated him down on the field with a kiss . As Travis prepared for the Super Bowl, Swift scored two wins at the 2024 Grammy Awards for her 10th studio album, Midnights . “ She’s unbelievable ,” Travis told reporters at a Super Bowl press conference . “She’s rewriting the history books herself. I told her I’ll have to hold up my end of the bargain and come home with some hardware too.” Travis did uphold his “end of the bargain” by helping the Chiefs win Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers. Swift traveled all the way from Tokyo to watch her boyfriend’s big game, sitting alongside her and Travis’ families and some of her celebrity friends, including Blake Lively and Ice Spice . In another sweet PDA moment, Swift celebrated Travis and the Chiefs’ second consecutive Super Bowl victory with a post-game kiss on the field. Travis later made his first-ever appearance on Swift’s social media in a funny TikTok video she posted from a Super Bowl afterparty . Travis later joined Swift in Australia when she hit the road again for The Eras Tour . In addition to trading friendship bracelets and handing out guitar picks at her shows, the couple enjoyed a fun day out at the Sydney Zoo . Travis continued to spend his NFL off-season supporting Swift at a number of herinternational concerts, including two of her Singapore shows . Swift was spotted running into the athlete’s arms and kissing him backstage after once again changing her “Karma” lyrics from “guy on the screen” to “guy on the Chiefs.” In more social media footage from the shows, Travis gave the tour’s cast and crew their props by high-fiving them backstage. Shortly after the pair were spotted packing on the PDA at Coachella , Swift released her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department . Swifties quickly theorized that several songs on the record were about her romance with Travis , including “The Alchemy” and “So High School.” “Truth, dare, spin bottles / You know how to ball, I know Aristotle,” she sings in “So High School” refrain. “Brand new, full throttle / Touch me while your bros play Grand Theft Auto .” Travis’ close friend Harry Clark seemingly confirmed that “So High School” was about Travis by sharing an Instagram Story pic of himself playing the video game Grand Theft Auto . Swift incorporated TTPD into her Eras Tour setlist beginning with her Paris shows, which Travis attended . In true Swift fashion, fans noticed that the new section of the show featured several nods to Travis , including bleachers and stadium lights graphics on the stage during “So High School” and Swift and her dancers mimicking Travis’ touchdown moves in the choreography. “It was fun, it was a blast,” Travis said of the Paris shows on the “New Heights” podcast. “I had a blast at Tay’s show. Her new rendition of The Eras Tour , I suggest everybody go see it. It has her new Tortured Poets Department [album], a handful of those songs in the new show, which means there’s a new segment and new lights and new dancing, new everything to the f—ing show. I suggest everybody get out there and see [her]. It is absolutely unbelievable .” Swift’s London Eras Tour shows were full of surprises, including Swift and Travis taking a backstage selfie with Prince William and his two eldest kids, Prince George, 11, and Princess Charlotte, 9. The photo marked the first time Swift posted Travis on her Instagram feed. Travis followed-up the photo by joining Swift and her dancers on stage at Wembley Stadium during the “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” intro skit. He sported a black morning suit and top hat to help Kameron Saunders and Jan Ravnik get ready to perform the number. “ I’m still cracking up /swooning over @killatrav’s Eras Tour debut 🥰,” Swift captioned an Instagram slideshow featuring pics and clips of Travis’s cameo. “Never going to forget these shows.” Travis gave his girlfriend a sweet — and hilarious — shout-out after winning a karaoke competition at the 5th Annual American Century Championship golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, California. “Taylor, this is for you,” he said in social media footage after scoring his victory, pretending to burst into tears. “I love you guys.” Swift and Travis enjoyed a break from touring and football by hosting a get-together at the singer’s Rhode Island mansion. Celebrity attendees included Jason, 37, and his wife, Kylie Kelce , 32, Lively, 37, Ryan Reynolds , Bradley Cooper , Gigi Hadid , Zoë Kravitz , Channing Tatum and Patrick and Brittany Mahomes . “It has felt wonderful to be grounded back home again,” a source exclusively told Us of the party. “It’s been grounding to see friends and family and spend quality time with everyone, chat and get downloaded on everyone’s worlds because she has been so busy and disconnected.” Swift re-entered her football era by attending the Chiefs’ season opener game against the Ravens and was spotted leaving the match holding Travis’ hand . She even planted a kiss on his cheek in a post-game snap shared by Chariah Gordon . The duo enjoyed another sporting event together later that month, attending the men’s singles final between Taylor Fritz and Jannik Sinner at the 2024 US Open . Not only were they photographed kissing one another, but they were spotted jamming to Darkness’ hit song “I Believe in a Thing Called Love.” That same month, Swift took home seven wins at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. In her speech for Video of the Year, she gave Travis a heartfelt shout-out . “I would finish a take and I’d say cut and we’d be done with that take, I would always just hear someone cheering ‘woo’ from across the studio where we were shooting it, and that one person was my boyfriend, Travis,” she said at the time. Swift added: “Everything this man touches turns to happiness and fun and magic, so I wanna thank him for adding that to our shoot because I’ll always remember that.” Swift and Kelce joined Lively and Reynolds, 48, for a double date in New York City. Fans noticed that their outfits subtly coordinated with one another, as she was carrying a black Dior saddle bag and Travis sported a shirt with a horse design. Ahead of The Eras Tour ’s final leg, Travis attended what would be his last show in Indianapolis. The city marked Swift’s final U.S. stop before traveling to Canada for her last batch of concerts. “I’ll tell you what, man, the American crowds, they did not disappoint,” Travis told Jason on the “New Heights” podcast. “I heard that it was a lot more rowdy this time around, knowing she was coming back to stop through America one last time before the tour was over with. I’ll tell you what, man, that thing was rocking.” You have successfully subscribed. However, he became the fastest tight end in NFL history to reach 12,000 career receiving yards during the Chiefs’ game against the Los Angeles Chargers that same day. He congratulated Swift on the end of her tour on the “New Heights” podcast, stating, “Shout-out to everybody that was a part of that show. Obviously, it’s her music, her tour and everything, but that was a full production, man. That thing was the best tour in the world because of a lot of people, but mostly because of Taylor.” Less than a week after her final Eras Tour performance, Swift giggled at a fan’s blanket which read “Go Taylor’s Boyfriend” during a visit to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.
