Read unlimited articles for free today: Already have an account? KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It took until the fourth quarter, when Kansas City was desperately trying to fend off the lowly Las Vegas Raiders, for Chiefs coach Andy Reid to finally make a drastic change to his offensive line. The Chiefs had tried Kingsley Suamataia at left tackle to start the season. When the rookie was getting beaten routinely for pressure and sacks, they switched to second-year pro Wanya Morris, who fared no better at protecting Patrick Mahomes. In the waning minutes of a 19-17 victory Friday — one that wasn’t secure until Las Vegas fumbled away a chance at a winning field goal with 15 seconds left — the Chiefs slid All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney out to tackle. Mike Caliendo entered at guard. And while they didn’t have much chance to work together, the move underscored what’s been a season-long problem. “That was the right thing to do at the time,” Reid said afterward. “It just solidified things.” What is the solution moving forward? Well, the Chiefs signed former Pro Bowl left tackle D.J. Humphries last week, but he’s been with the team for only a few days, and he’s also coming off an ACL tear that sidelined him for the entire offseason. In a perfect world, Humphries would slide into the lineup in time for the Chiefs’ game against the Chargers next Sunday. In a more realistic world, the Chiefs may need to make it through another week or two before he’s ready to contribute, and that would mean putting Morris back into the lineup or keeping Thuney protecting Mahomes’ blind side. “I would tell you it’s disruptive to any offense when the quarterback is hit,” Reid acknowledged, “and not able to get the ball off.” Mahomes had gone 113 straight starts without being sacked five-plus times in a game; Carolina and Las Vegas have done it in consecutive weeks. And along with the sacks have been penalties on Morris and right tackle Jawaan Taylor, which have made it hard for a Kansas City offense that has had to adapt to injuries all season to consistently put together drives. “We have to make sure we clean those things up,” Reid said. “It’s hard to go backwards in this league and win games.” Yet the Chiefs keep doing it. They have won an NFL-record 14 straight one-possession games, including five decided on the final play, this season. That has allowed them to piece together an 11-1 record and already clinch a postseason bye. “You’re not satisfied with where we’re at, even though we’re winning football games,” Mahomes said. “Our goal over these last few games is to prove the team we really are going into the playoffs and play that way in the playoffs.” What’s working The passing game has started to produce — when Mahomes has time to throw — now that DeAndre Hopkins has become more ingrained in the offense. He had four catches for 90 yards against the Raiders, and his mere presence has opened things up for others, including Travis Kelce, who had seven catches for 68 yards. What needs help The Chiefs basically abandoned an unproductive running game against Las Vegas. Isiah Pacheco ran seven times for 44 yards in his return from an ankle injury, but 34 yards came on one carry. Kareem Hunt had 15 yards on his seven attempts. Stock up Two-time All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones had been held without a sack for seven consecutive games, but he managed to bring down Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell twice. That was important given how much trouble the Chiefs have had getting to the quarterback when they aren’t blitzing this season. Stock down The entire Kansas City secondary has struggled for weeks, ever since cornerback Jaylen Watson was lost to a season-ending ankle injury. Nazeeh Johnson, Chamarri Conner and Bryan Cook in particular have been inconsistent in their coverage. Injuries The Chiefs made it through the Raiders game without any injuries. That is the second-longest streak in NFL history behind the Patriots, who made it 11 straight years from 2009-19. Next steps The game against the Raiders on Black Friday means the Chiefs have a couple of extra days to prepare for the Chargers. The Chiefs have beaten them six straight times, including a 17-10 win on Sept. 29 in Los Angeles. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Advertisement AdvertisementHARTFORD, Conn. — The UConn women’s basketball team remained ranked No. 2 in the AP Top 25 poll for the fifth straight week and continued receiving first-place votes after winning the Baha Mar Women’s Championship. The Huskies earned seven of a possible 32 first-place votes entering Week 5, coming in behind No. 1 UCLA with 25. UConn recorded its second ranked win of the season over No. 18 Ole Miss, 73-60, in the Bahamas on Wednesday, and the team also handled Oregon State 71-52 at the tournament to improve to 6-0. UConn star Paige Bueckers was also named Big East Player of the Week for the second time this season for her performance at the Baha Mar Women’s Championship. The redshirt senior averaged 26 points, five assists, 3.5 rebounds and two steals per game across the Huskies’ pair of wins, shooting 66.7% from the field and 55.6% from 3-point range. She currently has the highest field goal percentage in the country among players averaging 22 points or more. After hosting Holy Cross at Gampel Pavilion on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET, SNY), UConn is headed into a gauntlet of ranked opponents beginning with No. 22 Louisville on Saturday in the Women’s Champions Classic at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Huskies then travel to South Bend, Indiana on Dec. 12 to face Notre Dame, which dropped seven places to No. 10 after losses to both TCU and Utah in Week 4. The Irish still have an elite ceiling with a statement win over No. 6 USC on their resume, and No. 9 TCU skyrocketed into the top 10 for the first time in program history with the upset. Duke also made its season debut in the top 10 at No. 8 after beating No. 11 Oklahoma last week. The Huskies will face No. 20 Iowa State at Mohegan Sun Arena in the Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase on Dec. 17, and the Cyclones have also looked less than their best over the past two weeks. They entered the season ranked No. 8 but plummeted after a loss to Northern Iowa on Nov. 20, and No. 3 South Carolina routed them 76-36 last Thursday. UConn then concludes its loaded slate on Dec. 21 with a sold-out home showdown against USC, a rematch from last year’s Elite Eight. AP Top 25 women’s basketball poll: Week 5 ©2024 Hartford Courant. The choppy market continues as prices move sideways. Solana (SOL), one of the top altcoins, struggles to break above the $200 resistance. At the same time, Ripple (XRP) hovers around $2, with no clear trajectory. Meanwhile, DTX Exchange (DTX) , a new DeFi crypto, enters whale radars. Its bridge between traditional and decentralized finance and its one-stop platform for all trading needs contribute to the rising demand, alongside its massive growth prospects. As its launch date approaches, experts have hailed it as the best new crypto to invest in. DTX Exchange (DTX): Whales Double Down as Launch Approaches DTX Exchange (DTX) enters whale radar as the presale gathers steam and prepares to launch. With up to a 40% gain at the listing price of $0.20, scheduled for Q1, it might outperform top crypto coins like Solana (SOL) and Ripple (XRP) within this timeframe. Moreover, industry experts project a 5,000% gain after listing on Tier-1 exchanges, positioning it among the best altcoins to invest in. At the current price of $0.14 in the seventh round of the ICO, it is a steal, contributing to early funding rocketing past $10.6 million. In addition to its growth prospects, its innovative blend of the best elements of CEX and DEX drives huge demand. It will combine a user-friendly trading platform with decentralized principles like wallet-based trading and non-custodial storage solutions. Additionally, users will be able to trade thousands of asset classes across ETFs, stocks, forex and crypto via a single wallet—the first of its kind. Solana (SOL): Another Bounce Above $200? Solana (SOL), alongside the wider crypto market, trades downward. Sellers made another attempt to drag down prices on Thursday as it declined sharply from $200 to $187. This substantial decline in the Solana price reflects the overall market sentiment—largely cautious. However, the remaining days in the year promise to be explosive, the same as Q1. Technical indicators like the 200-EMA ($175) and 200-SMA ($167) suggest a comeback is underway, potentially reclaiming the elusive $200. Invst_Informant, a crypto expert, predicts a final target between $475 and $520 for Solana (SOL) this cycle, placing it among the top altcoins to invest in. Meanwhile, Mathew, another expert, suggests a retrace toward $170 followed by a bounce above $200. Despite the imminent comeback and upswing, SOL’s upside potential is limited compared to new altcoins like DTX Exchange. Ripple (XRP) Eyes a Rebound The payment-based cryptocurrency Ripple (XRP) also trades downward. It reflects broader bearish sentiment and indicators like the Average Directional Index (14) and the MACD Level (12, 26) suggest further downsides aren’t out of the question. On the other hand, indicators like the XRP price retailing above the 30-EMA ($2.1) and 50-EMA ($1.85) hint at a comeback, positioning it among the best cryptos to invest in. At the same time, key industry experts anticipate a bounce. Retailing above $2.1, Maxi, a top analyst, predicts Ripple (XRP) might trade between $7 and $13 this cycle. CaptainJackTurner, also a crypto analyst and trader, believes the altcoin might top around $20 and $30, provided BTC doesn’t fall below $92,000. Despite this, DTX Exchange’s projected 5,000% gain by Q1 is a more appealing alternative. DTX Exchange (DTX): A Better Crypto Alternative to Solana (SOL) and Ripple (XRP) Amid the underwhelming performances of Solana (SOL) and Ripple (XRP), whales have turned to DTX Exchange (DTX). This new altcoin is primed for more than a 40% gain by the launch date and a 5,000% rally in Q1 2025—a new DeFi project not to miss. Primed to transform the $10 billion global trading scene, it is a solid crypto contender. Developed by a committee of YFFN language experts, HFC Planning and Design, and Vincent Design Inc., the app provides users with an interactive platform to learn the Nation’s stories, words and teachings. “It’s a wonderful resource for the young people,” said YFFN councillor Louisa Constant. “They are loving it at home. There have been so many downloads by the younger generations. It’s wonderful work.” The project began about a year ago with funding from the Heritage Canada’s Indigenous Languages Program. A second phase later this year will expand the content available for users. “York Factory came to Vincent Design in December last year and had this idea, a very loose idea, for an app they wanted for language learning,” said Jordan Dysart, software developer for Vincent Design Inc., an Indigenous-led Winnipeg design creative agency. In the following months the groups met and gathered information and resources to be used in the platform. “The intention with this language app is we really wanted to tie the app and experience to the community, and in this is their work,” said Dysart. “We want to highlight them as a community. York Factory Language Committee is trying to inspire youth and language learners to continue on and provide tools so that it makes it more accessible to learn about history, culture, local stories, and landmarks.” Dysart said each area throughout the western communities that speak Cree have “slight differences” in their dialect. When users launch the app, they will be presented with an illustration of a map which represents the community. Important landmarks and cultural gathering sites throughout the community are highlighted including an explanation or an image with a Cree title and a Cree word describing it. There is also an option for users to play an audio file of the words. The app’s Learning Path takes users through eight modules of lessons that introduce basic grammar and phrases in the context of cultural traditions including spring goose camp, winter carnival and sewing. “(Then) you can explore some of the other features that we’ve created,” Dysart said. “One where you can learn these curated progressions ... in full on phrases of the Cree language. The next category of that learning chapter is something that goes and pulls translations directly from the dictionary that we have saved on the device and it pulls and shuffles a certain amount of words directly from the dictionary.” These words can be chosen by selecting the user’s skill level. And then, if they want to use them again, they can choose to use the audio files to hear the words. Dysart explained these options offer a more diverse learning experience aside from just reading the words. “They can use the audio recognition as well (to test their progress),” he added. The Syllabics section of the app provides users with audio, recorded by the committee, that explains each symbol’s meaning. In addition, Inineemowin provides local Knowledge Keeper’s stories, children’s stories, community stories and historical photographs. Dysart used his own Cree heritage and prior experience with language revitalization initiatives to provide a unique fusion of tradition and technology for the app. His personal connection to the work made the development of the Indigenous language learning app a significant milestone for Vincent Design Inc. “This is an area that’s very important to me,” Dysart said. “I’m a Cree man from northern Manitoba, very close to York Factory. It’s been such a wonderful process and we’re so excited to have this out. There is so many lessons and memories that are drafted in the language and as language develops it develops around the environment that it’s spoken in. Inside jokes or comments around the campfire, if you’re in the Rockies it’s going to be different in the Prairies.” Once the app had been developed, Dysart was able to have a ‘focus group’, which actually consisted of his grandparents, try it out. “It was really cool to see my grandparents playing on the app,” said Dysart adding they were testing the various translations and showed a lot of interest with the differences to their own dialect. The Inineemowin app is available on the App Store or Google Play.
Those who have been reading or listening to my commentaries in recent months will note that I have a pretty bleak view of the immediate future. The New Zealand economy is struggling to grow, the economy of our major export market is not doing much better, we have wars in the Middle East and Europe, and we have the prospect of an even more protectionist United States from January 20. Yet back home the political oxygen is being absorbed by debate on a bill in Parliament that we all know is not going to make it further than Select Committee, and whether public servants should be allowed to work from home. My wish for the year ahead is for a more mature political discourse which focuses on what really matters. So, what really matters? we need to focus on productivity. Our performance is very poor. We have been growing our economy by growing our population or by printing more money. We need to work smarter, invest more in technology, invest more in up-skilling our workforce, and reduce the drag caused by our inferior infrastructure and excessive regulation at central and local government levels. Some good decisions have been taken in the infrastructure space but we have a long way to go. we need to reverse the disturbing performance trend in our education sector. When I was appointed chair of Education NZ in 2011, New Zealand was sitting at No 5 in the OECD PISA rankings. Now we are struggling to stay in the top 20. Our vocational education sector has been through an unsuccessful reform and is now about to be reformed again. And our universities are struggling also. It is no wonder that so many our best school leavers are voting with their feet. Of course, our education system and our productivity performance our linked. To put it simply, how can you grow productivity strongly, if a big chunk of your workforce struggle to read or understand basic mathematics? and also linked to the first two wishes, is a serious debate about how we prepare, as an economy and society for some inevitable disruptions that are coming fast at us down the railway line. We are inevitably going to become more automated at our ports and airports, our trucks, courier vans and taxis will be driverless, and many jobs in manufacturing and service industries will be undertaken by robots. This is not science fiction. I was served by a robot after placing my order on my cellphone at one of my favourite restaurants last year – DinTaiFung (鼎泰豐) Taipei 101 Branch. Wellington lawyer Peter Cullen had several trips in driverless taxis in the US recently. What is going to happen to all those workers who are going to be disrupted by these technologies? And while we are on the topic of disruption, where is the debate in New Zealand about the impact that precision fermentation is going to have on dairy and meat markets globally? It is now cheaper to produce dairy proteins in an urban factory than on the farm. This is not science fiction either. The world’s biggest dairy companies are investing in this technology – Nestlé, Danone and even Fonterra are investors. This is going to be a very real part of the future of dairy and meat. It might solve our greenhouse gas emission problems but what impact will this have on the New Zealand farming model? There is some media coverage, and Radio NZ have covered it in the last year, but most policy thinkers don’t know what I am talking about when. I raise the topic. and linked to the above too, I want us to start grappling with what will fill the gap in our exports should dairy and meat indeed get disrupted. Our services exports have to grow. There is potential low hanging fruit with tourism and international education, but on the former we seem intent on pricing ourselves out of certain markets. And on the second, we have yet to be able to recover to pre-Covid levels even though our major competitors (Australia and Canada) are trying to reduce their international student numbers. We need to focus more on internationalising our professional services companies, the screen sector, our software and other high-tech industries, just to name a few. But I really can’t see any strategy to achieve this. To do this we are going to need to do even better at attracting investment, particularly from very wealthy entrepreneurs. There is also a disruption coming at us in the energy space. Wind, solar, and geothermal, and more investment in batteries will play a bigger role in our future. There may be potential biofuel, methanol, and hydrogen/ammonia opportunities for New Zealand also. Short term, however, we need to keep the lights on. To do this we need natural gas to be available as we transition away from coal. There is actually plenty or resource. We just need to give companies the confidence to keep investing in new wells. Better regulation in this sector is essential. We need a more mature, less partisan, and better informed debate on this also. and most obviously for an old trade policy hand, I hope that President Donald Trump does not implement the tariff plans that he outlined during the campaign and since he was elected. They would be bad for the US, bad for New Zealand and bad for the global economy.

Suddenly, the whole space will feel a little more inviting — like it's asking you to grab a blanket and stay awhile. Heads up: this listing is only for the pillow *covers*. If you need inserts, too, you can get 'em here ! Promising review : "I bought two packs so I could cover four pillows. It is so much cheaper than buying new pillows every time you want to update your colors. These are a beautiful orange color for fall and everyone thinks they are brand new cushions. Little tip: buy the cover that is just under the actual pillow dimensions, so you have a fuller cushion. My cushions measure 18 x 18 inches, and I bought the 16 x 16 covers. I had to fold them in half to place them inside the covers and then once zipped I fussed with the cushion as opposed to trying to force them in and risking ripping the zipper. It worked perfectly! With many scents to choose from — from smoke and musk to fruity and sweet — you're bound to find one that gives your bedroom a signature fragrance. Lulu Candles is a US-based small business that specializes in scented candles and perfumes. Promising review : "I was staying over at a friend's house and sitting next to her coffee table. She had this candle on the table and even though it wasn't lit I could smell it, and it was so delicious that I instantly went online to find it and bought it for myself! If this came in a perfume I would buy enough to last the rest of my life. I don't know how to even explain the scent but if you are an amber/patchouli/vanilla fan, this is absolutely for you. The jasmine adds an unbelievable freshness without a flowery scent . I even bought the shampoo and conditioner which I will probably use as more of a body wash and shaving cream but that is how desperate I am to get this scent on me! " — Melissa I.
