Jeff Burkhart: The holidays aren’t all fun and gamesGiven that Blue Bloods only ended a couple of weeks ahead of the 2025 TV schedule ’s arrival, it’s understandable that longtime fans may still have all kinds of feelings about the Reagan family no longer being a Friday night mainstay on CBS. The same goes for some of the show’s stars, many of which spoke out against the network’s cancellation decision , and even those who weren’t around since the early days, such as series vet Steve Schirripa, had bittersweet feelings about bowing out with Season 14. One of the most successful ways Blue Bloods gained and maintained its massive audience was through the closeness of the Reagan family, and through the episode-capping meals around Frank Reagan’s dinner table. And the way Schirripa puts it, the cast members were indeed familial in the way they welcomed him into the fold upon the Season 6 arrival of his character, the retired detective Anthony Abetemarco. Speaking with People , Schirripa reflected on the point when he joined the show in a recurring capacity in 2015, saying: It was a very close-knit group, really, a nice group of people. I didn't know anyone, so it’s strange when you're stepping in and everyone knows each other, and you're the new guy. But they treated me like one of them from day one. The actor revealed that he was initially signed on to appear in just two Season 6 episodes, but eventually popped up in a whopping 146 installments after producers inquired about his interest in sticking around. Thankfully, he was indeed interested, and the rest is broadcast history. Of course, things might have gone differently had Steve Schirripa been shunned, or just not felt as welcomed in general by his fellow cast members. But that thankfully wasn’t how it went down, and the Sopranos vet shared that his co-stars’ kindness extended beyond his more limited appearances in early eps, and lasted throughout his entire run. As he put it: I mostly worked with Bridget and Donnie, but I wound up working eventually with everyone at one point, so that was good. I love working with Bridget, she's a terrific, underrated actress who was just wonderful to work with, really smart, and Donnie is a great guy and a lot of fun. After all of his years on Blue Bloods and in the boy band New Kids on the Block, I’d be surprised to hear about Donnie Wahlberg being rude to anybody, so it definitely tracks that he was a gent to work with. And I definitely agree with Steve Schirripa’s opinion that Bridget Moynihan is underrated, and if there’s anything to celebrate about the crime drama’s endgame, it’s the hope that Moynihan lands another equally celebrated role. (Wahlberg, meanwhile, is currently hosting HLN’s Very Scary People , which airs Sunday nights.) Though he may not be seen on the small screen with his former Blue Bloods co-stars, he addressed the fact that he’s already reconnected with a couple of them in the months since filming wrapped up. As he put it: CINEMABLEND NEWSLETTER Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News I just saw Bridget at the Knicks game, and I talked to Will Estes the other day. We keep in touch. Blue Bloods ’ finale quite possibly brought in the biggest viewing audience for any series that ended in 2024 , at least when it comes to broadcast networks. ( Yellowstone ’s series finale nearly doubled the CBS drama’s numbers.) So here’s hoping network execs can figure out a way to bring at least some of these characters back to the small screen in the future, even if a smaller ensemble is required to keep salary costs down. For now, the entirety of Blue Bloods ’ run is available to stream with a Paramount+ subscription , from the early Abetemarco-free years all the way up to the final Regan dinner scene .Stars arrive at the 2024 Royal Variety Performance after Queen pulls out

Saquon Barkley tops 2,000 yards rushing as Eagles beat Cowboys 41-7 to clinch NFC EastDecember 12, 2024 This article has been reviewed according to Science X's editorial process and policies . Editors have highlightedthe following attributes while ensuring the content's credibility: fact-checked peer-reviewed publication trusted source proofread by Steve Lundeberg, Oregon State University Oregon State University researchers have synthesized new molecules able to quickly capture significant amounts of carbon dioxide from the air, an important tactic in climate change mitigation. The study, which focused on titanium peroxides, builds on their earlier research into vanadium peroxides. The research is part of large-scale federal effort to innovate new methods and materials for direct air capture, or DAC, of carbon dioxide, produced by the burning of fossil fuels. Findings of the research, led by May Nyman and Karlie Bach of the OSU College of Science, were published today in Chemistry of Materials . Nyman's team is exploring how some transition metal complexes can react with air to remove carbon dioxide and convert it to a metal carbonate, similar to what is found in many naturally occurring minerals. Transition metals are located near the center of the periodic table and their name arises from the transition of electrons from low energy to high energy states and back again, giving rise to distinctive colors. Facilities that filter carbon dioxide from the air are still in their infancy. Technologies for mitigating carbon dioxide at the point of entry into the atmosphere, such as at power plants , are more mature. Both types of carbon capture will likely be needed if the Earth is to avoid the worst outcomes of climate change, the scientists say. At present there are a combined 18 active direct air capture plants operating in the United States, Canada and Europe, with plans for an additional 130 around the globe. Challenges to direct air capture include big costs and high energy requirements compared to working with industrial exhausts. Additionally, the atmosphere's concentration of carbon dioxide, four parts per million, is low, challenging the performance of carbon capture materials. "We opted to look into titanium as it's 100 times cheaper than vanadium, more abundant, more environmentally friendly and already well established in industrial uses," said Bach, a graduate student in Nyman's lab. "It also is right next to vanadium on the periodic table, so we hypothesized that the carbon capture behavior could be similar enough to vanadium to be effective." Bach, Nyman and the rest of the research team made several new tetraperoxo titanate structures—a titanium atom coordinated with four peroxide groups—that showed varying abilities to scrub carbon dioxide from the air. Tetraperoxo structures tend to be highly reactive because of the peroxide groups, which are potent oxidizing agents. Related peroxotitanates have been studied for their potential uses in catalysis, environmental chemistry and materials science. However, the tetraperoxotitanates in this study had never been definitively synthesized; Bach was able to use inexpensive materials for high-yield chemical reactions. "Our favorite carbon capture structure we discovered is potassium tetraperoxo titanate, which is extra unique because it turns out it is also a peroxosolvate," Bach said. "That means that in addition to having the peroxide bonds to titanium, it also has hydrogen peroxide in the structure, which is what we believe makes it so reactive." The measured carbon capture capacity was about 8.5 millimoles carbon dioxide per gram of potassium tetraperoxo titanate—roughly double that of vanadium peroxide. "Titanium is a cheaper, safer material with a significantly higher capacity," Bach said. Named for the titans of Greek mythology, titanium is as strong as steel but much lighter. It's non-toxic, does not easily corrode and is the ninth most abundant element in the Earth's crust—found in rocks, soil, plants and even the human body in trace amounts. BERLIN (AP) — Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk caused uproar after backing Germany’s far-right party in a major newspaper ahead of key parliamentary elections in the Western European country, leading to the resignation of the paper’s opinion editor in protest. Germany is to vote in an early election on Feb. 23 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party governing coalition collapsed last month in a dispute over how to revitalize the country’s stagnant economy. Musk’s guest opinion piece for Welt am Sonntag —a sister publication of POLITICO owned by the Axel Springer Group — published in German over the weekend, was the second time this month he supported the Alternative for Germany, or AfD. “The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is the last spark of hope for this country,” Musk wrote in his translated commentary. He went on to say the far-right party “can lead the country into a future where economic prosperity, cultural integrity and technological innovation are not just wishes, but reality.” The Tesla Motors CEO also wrote that his investment in Germany gave him the right to comment on the country’s condition. The AfD is polling strongly, but its candidate for the top job, Alice Weidel , has no realistic chance of becoming chancellor because other parties refuse to work with the far-right party. An ally of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, the technology billionaire challenged in his opinion piece the party’s public image. “The portrayal of the AfD as right-wing extremist is clearly false, considering that Alice Weidel, the party’s leader, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka! Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please!” Musk’s commentary has led to a debate in German media over the boundaries of free speech, with the paper’s own opinion editor announcing her resignation, pointedly on Musk’s social media platform, X. “I always enjoyed leading the opinion section of WELT and WAMS. Today an article by Elon Musk appeared in Welt am Sonntag. I handed in my resignation yesterday after it went to print,” Eva Marie Kogel wrote. A critical article by the future editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Jan Philipp Burgard, accompanied Musk’s opinion piece. “Musk’s diagnosis is correct, but his therapeutic approach, that only the AfD can save Germany, is fatally wrong,” Burgard wrote. Responding to a request for comment from the German Press Agency, dpa, the current editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Ulf Poschardt, and Burgard — who is due to take over on Jan. 1 — said in a joint statement that the discussion over Musk’s piece was “very insightful. Democracy and journalism thrive on freedom of expression.” “This will continue to determine the compass of the “world” in the future. We will develop “Die Welt” even more decisively as a forum for such debates,” they wrote to dpa.

Tottenham Hotspur Player Ratings vs Manchester City Tottenham Hotspur inflicted a third straight Premier League defeat to reigning champions Manchester City in what was a sensational performance by Ange Postecoglou’s men in his 50th league clash as Spurs boss. Manchester City had opportunities to go ahead but it was Tottenham who struck first in the 13th minute thanks to James Maddison’s excellent finish. The English international, whose future at the club has been called into question , doubled the lead seven minutes later to give the visitors a healthy cushion. A shell-shocked Manchester City were unable to come to terms with Tottenham’s energy and a former star of their drive home the result in the second half. Pedro Porro scored the visitors third in the 52nd minute to condemn the champions to yet another defeat. The loss gives Tottenham a shot in the arm in their aim to finish in the top four while severely denting City’s chances of a fifth straight league crown. Substitute Brennan Johnson added further wounds to Guardiola’s side by scoring a fourth in injury time. Here is how we think Tottenham Hotspur players fared in the game against Manchester City in the Premier League at home. GK | Guglielmo Vicario: (8/10) The Italian struggled with the national team in the international break but made an excellent stop to deny Erling Haaland in the first half when the game was yet scoreless. He also rose to the occasion in the second half, denying Ilkay Gundogan and Haaland to further frustrate the hosts. The performance should act as a much-needed confidence booster for the Spurs goalkeeper. RB | Pedro Porro: (7/10) The Spaniard’s stock has risen in recent times and he initially struggled to keep Savinho quiet. However, he readjusted his approach and improved as the game went on. A thunderous strike saw him score the visitors’ third of the night in what was yet another excellent outing for the full-back. CB | Radu Dragusin: (7/10) The Romanian has been subject to some criticism in recent months and his performance on the night will hardly be counted as a vintage one. However, he stood tall when needed and largely kept the Man City attackers at bay. CB | Ben Davies: (7/10) The senior-most figure in the Spurs backline, the Welshman made excellent use of his experience. Davies might not have been spectacular but help keep Phil Foden quiet and was at hand to deal with any trouble. His organisational skills also frustrated Man City on the night. LB | Destiny Udogie: (6/10) Not the Italian’s best night but he kept pushing and was not afraid to run up and down the flank when needed. Udogie made way for Djed Spence in the 90th minute. CM | Pape Matar Sarr: (5/10) He lost the ball a couple of times and also picked up a yellow card in the second half. However, Sarr’s physicality gave Tottenham a presence in the middle of the park and helped the visitors retain control in the middle of the park. CDM | Yves Bissouma: (6.5/10) An early yellow card put him on thin ice but Bissouma made his case in Rodrigo Bentancur’s absence. Bissouma put in a fighting performance and deserves credit for doing the dirty work in a key role. CM | James Maddison: (8/10) The birthday boy certainly upped the ante and showcased his best on a night when his team needed him. He times his run for the first goal while showcasing immaculate coolness to dispatch his side’s second of the night. Maddison petered off as the game went on as Spurs aimed to see out the result. RW | Dejan Kulusevski: (6/10) The Swede has been Tottenham’s best performer this season and once again found himself among the assist-makers on the night. He had Josko Gvardiol’s number and often led the Croatian in his wake. Speaking ahead of the game, Kulusevski was hopeful of making a difference and it is good to see him make good on that promise. LW | Son Heung-min: (6/10) A rather quiet night for the Spurs’ skipper, who is often Man City’s tormentor in chief. He singed Ederson’s gloves with a shot in the first half before earning himself an assist for Maddison’s second. He was taken off for Brennan Johnson in the second half. ST | Dominic Solanke: (6.5/10) The Englishman might not have gotten on the scoresheet but his ability to hold up the ball and bring his teammates into play remains a potent weapon. Solanke also secured himself an assist on the night. Substitutes: Brennan Johnson: (6/10) The Welshman came on for Son in the second half and scored his side’s fourth in the final minute of stoppage time. Djed Spence: (NA) A late substitute for Destiny Udogie as Tottenham sought to see the game out. Lucas Bergvall: (6/10) A late substitute for Pape Matar Sarr as Tottenham sought to see the game out. He also frustrated Manuel Akanji enough to secure the latter a yellow card. Timo Werner: (NA) A late substitute for Maddison, Werner provided the assist for Brennan Johnson’s coup de grace.
