DETROIT — After being titled American Youth Football and Cheer state champions over the weekend, the Detroit City Lions youth teams have set their eyes on Naples, Florida, to bag the national championship. But there is a major hurdle in their way, which could break their young hearts. 7 News Detroit reporter Faraz Javed is raising the voices of over 30 kids, asking for your help to make their dreams come true. These twenty-nine little warriors are loud and proud of their nine-and-under Detroit City Lions Youth Club's football team. Darien Vanpalt plays right tackle and is laser-focused on his goal. "To protect the quarterback," said Darien. And that would be Kayden Buskins. "What's that feeling like leading a team?" asked Faraz. "Sometimes it be a lot of pressure... Like I don't yell at them, I would be like, ay, you doing good, but you can improve on this and that," said Kayden. This past weekend, the Little Lions beat teams from Milwaukee, Chicago, and Cleveland to win the AYF Midwest Regional Championship, which was held in Detroit for the first time. "Win downtown Detroit at Corner Ball Park. How exciting is that? For now, Detroit is the limelight that this is a great city, great people here, great talent," said co-founder Devon Buskins. Buskins created this club 5 years ago to provide at-risk young boys and girls with much-needed sports programs and academic services. After bagging this cup, Devon is even more determined to continue the mission. "With that grit on our back that we were not going to give up, and our kids are special. They've fought all year round," said Devon. That also includes the club's ten-and-under cheer team, who also bagged this year's AYF Midwest Cheer Championship and are also Florida-bound for the finals. "But there is a hiccup?" asked Faraz. "Yes, major! It's financial," said Devon. Devon says that football is an expensive sport to pursue, and the club doesn't have the budget to cover the cost of the trip. "It kind of hurts me. Saddens me to see my son not, possibly, be able to go on a trip because of financial issues," said Darrin. Darien's dad has a pet grooming business, and Darrin says things have just not been the same. "You have to put in extra hours, to work extra hard, and sometimes it's just not enough to cover everything, like sports because you have to make sure home is taken care of first and everybody eats," said Darrin. Devon says nearly every parent that's part of the club is struggling to raise $720 per kid, especially during the holidays. "My family started this organization out of our pockets because we believe not only in our kids but all kids. And all kids need a chance. And that's why organizations, and companies and individuals that can donate should donate to Detroit City Lions. We are one of the most diverse youth club organization, grass-rooted. Last year we serviced 3900 kids," said Devon. "Just in case you cannot raise the money, are you saying their dreams will be crushed?" asked Faraz. "There is a huge possibility. Give a dollar, a quarter, it adds up, and create an experience for these young people that they may never get again," said Devon. "You got to do what you got to do to win," said Kayden. Stove Top Stuffing, an instant boxed stuffing mix that is popular to have with Thanksgiving dinner, contains two ingredients, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), that are “known human carcinogens and may cause other health problems,” Dr. Neha Pathak, MD, who serves on the Medical Team for WebMD explained to the New York Post . The product is banned in the United Kingdom, the European Union, and Japan. Pathak explained that “these types of preservatives” are banned due to the “cancer risk.” “A lot of countries have much stricter rules around what’s allow[ed] in food,” Pathak told the outlet. Is it fertility, is it early menstruation? Tottenham return to Southampton on Sunday for the first time since Antonio Conte’s explosive post-match rant, but current boss Ange Postecoglou has not lost any of his determination to succeed at the club. Conte’s last public act as Spurs head coach after a 3-3 draw at St Mary’s in 2023 was to launch a furious tirade against his own “selfish” players who he claimed “don’t want to play under pressure” before he seemed to turn on the board as he questioned the club’s ongoing trophy drought. Eight days later Conte had left Tottenham by mutual consent after a whirlwind 16-month period, with Postecoglou his eventual permanent successor. Postecoglou has been in charge of the Premier League club for two months longer than the Italian, but managed 12 fewer matches and is currently in the middle of an injury crisis which has resulted in a drop in form, with Spurs only able to claim one victory from their last eight fixtures. However, when Postecoglou was asked if he would jump ship in the wake of making remarks like Conte did in March, 2023, he said: “Look, I don’t think it’s fair to comment. “Antonio is a world-class manager and has his own way of doing things, his own reasons for doing that. “I am here, I am in for the fight. During a Labour away day ahead of the last election, the party’s candidates were put through their paces as parliamentary debaters. The topic chosen, assisted dying , was a deliberately intractable issue designed to test their analytical skills. Yet just months later, scores of new MPs find themselves having to make a very real decision over changing the law. “I’m genuinely the most back and forth on this that I’ve been on anything,” said one new MP who has found themselves on either side of the debate over recent months. Like so many, with the issues so finely balanced in their mind, a single conversation can sway their thinking. “I had a conversation during the election campaign with a woman whose husband was on a [syringe] driver for 12 days,” the MP said. “I can honestly say that conversation really changed my mind and put me in the pro camp. But the challenge for the people who are pro is whether they can convince everybody that this bill is narrow enough. I don’t know what they could do prior to Friday to get that over.” All MPs are now grappling over how they will vote in Friday’s once-in-a-generation decision on the assisted dying bill brought forward by Labour backbencher Kim Leadbeater. They talk of being bombarded with campaign material from the pro and anti campaigns, as well as being swayed by personal stories of friends, family and constituents. However, Labour MPs involved in that pre-election debate practice say it could never have prepared them for the real thing, as discussing the principle of assisted dying has given way to assessing the merits of the specific bill now before them. “The general public get to say whether they’re pro or against it as a principle,” said a Labour MP. “The MPs in the grey area now are the ones asking: ‘How would this work?’ We’re trying to think of it pragmatically.” MPs across the political divide said that there had been a large amount of lobbying in their inboxes, but they are taking very different approaches to reaching their final decisions. Some said they were talking at length to their colleagues to thrash out the issues. Others said they were keeping their thoughts to themselves. While new MPs find themselves thrown into a major ethical debate only months into their career, Friday’s free vote on the issue has been no easier for some veteran MPs. John McDonnell, the former shadow chancellor who entered parliament in 1997, said he had thought about the issue for decades – but had only very recently switched in favour of backing the bill. “I’ve been in parliament 27 years now,” he said. “This has become a recurring debate every few years. It’s a hardy perennial that comes back. “Up until now, I was unsure and opposed previous attempts at assisted dying. I was concerned, as everyone is, to make sure that we get it right and that there’s safeguards in place. “I’ve been trying to talk to as many organisations as possible. I’ve read everything that’s come into my inbox. I’ve tried to interrogate the proposals as much as possible that Kim and others put forward. And so now, for the first time, I’ve come to the view that, yes, I’ll support an assisted dying bill. I think the safeguards that Kim has put forward are pretty strong. But again, if there are other improvements that could be made, I’m open minded to looking at those. OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Asked if there was any special meaning to playing on Christmas for a second straight season, Lamar Jackson paused for several seconds before answering. That said it all. “I mean, it is,” he finally replied, trying to be diplomatic. “That means we're good, but at the same time, I do want to celebrate at home sometimes with my family now. I don't want to be playing on Christmas all the time — not all the time.” That sentiment seemed common among the Baltimore Ravens players this week as they prepared for their second consecutive Christmas road game. Jackson and his teammates will face the Houston Texans on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, the Kansas City Chiefs play at Pittsburgh. Games on Christmas aren't new to the NFL. The Miami Dolphins famously beat the Chiefs in a playoff game on Dec. 25, 1971 — a double-overtime classic that still holds the record for the NFL's longest game. In 2020, New Orleans running back Alvin Kamara tied an NFL record with six touchdowns in a game when the Saints beat Minnesota on Christmas. Lately, however, the league has been much more aggressive about scheduling games on Christmas. There were three last year on a Monday, and this week there are two. (AP) — The woman who in 2006 falsely accused three Duke University lacrosse players of raping her has admitted publicly for the first time that she made up the story. The accusations made national headlines at the time, stirring tensions about race, class and the privilege of college athletes. She led Iowa to the national championship game, was the top pick in the WNBA draft and captured rookie of the year honors in the league. Fans packed sold-out arenas and millions of television viewers followed her journey on and off the court. Clark's exploits also put other women's sports leagues in the spotlight. A group of 74 sports journalists from AP and its members voted on the award. Other athletes who received votes included Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles and boxer Imane Khelif.
