UAAGI Chief Marketing Executive Lyn Buena says Lynk & Co is targeting a growing middle class Interview by Kap Maceda Aguila WHEN IT was formally launched in the Philippines last April at the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS), Lynk & Co (distributed by United Asia Automotive Group, Inc. or UAAGI) wanted to change the average car buyer’s notion that China-headquartered car marques are known for delivering value for money and hardly anything else — certainly not the characteristics associated with more premium brands. Lynk & Co leverages its affinity with the Volvo and Geely brands, being a joint venture of both. For one thing, Lynk & Co vehicles “are designed and built using advanced architectural platforms such as CMA, SEA, and BMA. These platforms allow for model scalability and adaptability in light of new energy solutions, such as translation of Lynk & Co’s designs to accommodate new electric vehicle technologies,” according to a company release. “(It is a) premium, global vehicle (brand) that ticks all the right boxes in terms of design aesthetic, safety, and modern connectivity,” UAAGI Group Managing Director and Lynk & Co Philippines Brand Head Froilan Dytianquin had said during the Lynk & Co preview ahead of the MIAS launch. Meanwhile, UAAGI Chairman Rommel Sytin said that the brand “not only elevates UAAGI’s entire auto brand portfolio, but also allows us to cater to a wider audience of Filipino motorists and their discerning tastes and preferences.” We caught up with UAAGI Chief Marketing Executive Lyn Manalansang-Buena on the sidelines of the inauguration of Lynk & Co’s fourth operational dealership — this one located along Quezon Avenue. Paramount Cars, Inc. President Jessica Lee-Sy had noted in her speech that the country today boasts 21 Chinese car brands, with more poised to enter the market. We asked Mrs. Manalansang-Buena how Lynk & Co intends to stand out in this crush of competitors, and more. Here are excerpts from our interview: VELOCITY: How do you see the industry shaping up, and how does Lynk & Co position itself differently from the other Chinese brands that are out there? What particular segment of the buying market are you eyeing? LYN MANALANSANG-BUENA : I agree it’s a crowded marketplace now, but at the end of the day, I think it has a lot to do with the product that you offer. We’re very fortunate because Lynk & Co, in cooperation with its mother company Geely, has produced very premium cars. Because of a rising middle class, a lot of people are going to want cars that are more rewarding — not just a basic tool that can get you from point A to point B. That’s exactly what Lynk & Co offers, something that will make you feel good about your purchase — (providing) an environment that you’re happy with. It’s something that I feel is a significant proposition for a new breed of middle-class workers in the Philippines. There’s a lot of discovery about brands that are not as known but offer good technology, premium environment, and safety. I think that’s a very strong proposition in terms of our lineup in Lynk & Co. What’s the timeline for growing the network? We have two dealerships that will open by the first half of next year, and our plan is to have eight open showrooms by the end of 2025, conservatively. We have partners north and south of NCR. That’s the plan: To have more presence in very specific areas where we feel the market is ready for a brand like Lynk & Co. You’re planning to release electrified options as well. Are seeing you an uptick in demand from your customers and the industry in general for electrified powertrains? Because of the distinct profile of the Lynk & Co audience, I think they’re one of the first adopters. They’re among the first to embrace new things, new technologies — so long as it makes sense, because they’re also very discerning. As long as we can make sense of that, the infrastructure is ready, the technology and after-sales are supported which is what we have in UAAGI — because UAAGI is very well known for its exceptional after-sales services across our four brands — I think yes, we are doing those steps. We are being cautiously optimistic, but we’re reading the market very well because it evolves fast. We want to make very calculated, smart moves whenever we choose a product to introduce.Sampson breaks single-season touchdown record in Vols’ win over UTEP No. 11 Tennessee struggled with UTEP early but rallied in the second quarter en route to a 56-0 win over the Miners. The Vols (9-2) rebounded from their loss at Georgia and now sit one win away from their second 10-win season in the past three years. Tennessee got a boost in its playoffs hopes during the game after Florida defeated No. 9 Ole Miss in The Swamp, which prompted Neyland to be flooded with Gator chomps. A rare sight indeed. Still, head coach Josh Heupel and the Vols aren’t getting too ahead of themselves with a matchup with Vanderbilt coming. Unless the Vols get a chance to host a playoff game, this was the last time that the seniors took the field at Neyland Stadium. This specific group has played a key role in Josh Heupel and Tennessee’s rise near the top of the SEC. “I mean these guys, when I got here, the outside noise around this program was way different than it was when I started,” he said. “And that doesn’t happen because of me. It doesn’t happen simply because of assistant coaches. They’re a huge part of it too. But it’s gotta be from within the locker room. And when a lot of guys left, they chose to stay. “They believe in this program. They wanted to be a part of this program. Believed in me. Trusted enough in me to help build this thing. And it takes a special person to do that, and these guys are special.” Nico Iamaleava led the way, completing 17-of-23 passes for 209 yards and four touchdowns — a career-high for the redshirt freshman. Bru McCoy caught two of those touchdowns in his last regular season game in Neyland — his first two of the season. Will play without the ball in his hands as hard as anybody I’ve been around. Takes great pride in that. There’s been some opportunities and we just hadn’t connected on it. And you watch him after one of those plays, he resets to the next play as well as anybody. Today was cool just to see him connect and go finish on a couple of big plays.” Sampson had a quieter day with just 11 carries but went for 77 yards and a score, picking up another 25 through the air. Freshman Peyton Lewis added 46 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. On defense, James Pearce picked up two sacks. Jermod McCoy and John Slaughter each had picks as well. Boo Carter led the team in tackles with six and also took two punt returns for 56 yards. The Vols were sluggish in the first quarter and only picked up 37 total yards compared to the Miners’ 76. Iamaleava couldn’t settle in and missed a pair of potential touchdown passes to Dont’e Thornton and Bru McCoy. He eventually settled in to open the second quarter with a pair of first-down passes to Sampson along with one to Miles Kitselman and McCoy. Sampson broke the seal with a 14-yard touchdown run. With the score, he broke the program’s single-season touchdown record with his 22nd. On the same play, he also broke the record for points score with 132. Both records were previously held by Gene McEver, who held it for nearly 100 years (1929). It was all Tennessee from there. “Once we started doing the everyday things consistently, all 11, had a really good day,” Heupel said. “Created explosive plays, were efficient in the run game, creating some explosive plays there too. And we were efficient in the red zone, so proud of that. Just settling into the ball game after not our best start.” Iamaleava had a trio of touchdown passes to Squirrel White and Ethan Davis as the Vols scored on four of its final five possessions of the half after punting on its first three. Tennessee scored 28 second-quarter points and held the Miners scoreless in the first half. The Vols scored on their fifth straight possession to open the second half as Iamaleava and Sampson set it up with runs of 29 and 13. Iamaleava found McCoy for their second end-zone connection of the afternoon, pushing the Vols’ lead to 35-0. Peyton Lewis then stretched it to 42 with a three-yard touchdown run. UTEP put a respectable drive together and flirted near the red zone, but Pearce picked up his second sack of the day. The Miners were forced to settle for a 52-yard field goal and it bounced out off the crossbar. Iamaleava picked up a pair of chunk plays to Dont’e Thornton and Miles Kitselman before Lewis picked up his second touchdown of the afternoon. Cam Seldon capped off the scoring with his first career touchdown on a three-yard rush with 5:17 remaining. The Vols will travel to Vanderbilt next weekend to conclude the regular season. “The better you play, the more you win, the bigger the games get,” Heupel said. “Doesn’t matter. So for us, this is the next step in our journey. Laser focused (in) how we prepare, how we practice, get ready to go play. I mean, you’re going to have to play well and you need to play well in all three phases in this one.”

Google is making significant changes to Google Photos that will replace the familiar Library with a new “Collections” menu when accessing the service via your browser . The change follows similar updates Google recently introduced to its corresponding mobile apps. A few other tools have also moved around in the Google Photos side panel, but don’t panic; all the functions are still there, just in different locations. If you’re familiar with using Google Photos on your mobile device, you should have no trouble adapting to the new browser interface as the changes align with the latest versions of Google’s Android and iOS apps. Here’s what’s new or removed: Google Photos Changes: Explore function removed First, the Explore function, with its confusing magnifying glass icon (it’s not a search function!), has been removed. Now, “People and pets,” “Places” and “Documents” can be found in their own sections of the main Google Photos menu rather than having to click Explore first to reveal them. Google Photos Changes: New Updates section — goodbye Sharing Google has now added an Updates section to the side menu. This mirrors the function available via the mobile apps, which serves as a place for notifications of recent activity such as comments and likes on your pictures, people joining your albums or sharing their albums with you. On your mobile device, these updates can be accessed by tapping the alarm bell icon near the top-right of the screen, which will show a red dot when new updates arrive. The new Updates section replaces the former Sharing menu option, which provided a similar function but with much less information and is no longer required. You can now see sharing activity from within the Updates section. Google Photos Changes: Library replaced with Collections The Library section has now been renamed to “Collections” and still contains many of the same subsections, including Favorites, Albums, Documents, Archive and your Locked Folder. The Collections section also adds People & Pets and Places (previously found under Explore), Videos (to quickly see only video content) and one of my personal favorites, “Recently added,” which shows you photos and videos in the order they were uploaded regardless of when you took them. Before this update, you had to access the search menu and manually type “Recently Added” to access this function. No one likes change for the sake of it, but these recent updates make it easier to access commonly used functions while bringing the Google Photos Web interface much closer to that of the mobile apps. The update is rolling out now on an account-by-account basis. I have the new interface on one of my accounts but not the other, so if you’re wondering why your Google Photos page looks different to someone else’s, this is why.
