Marcus Rashford gives Man United dream start against Ipswich TownNEW YORK (AP) — Having waited 63 years for an Ivy League football title, Columbia had to stand by for another 40 minutes. The Lions had beaten Cornell 17-9 but needed a Harvard loss against Yale to secure a share of first place on the season's final day. So Columbia players retreated to their locker room on a hill a few hundred feet from Wien Stadium to watch the game in Boston on TV as a few hundred fans remained and gazed at the gold-and-orange foliage of Inwood Hill Park glowing in Saturday's afternoon sun. When Yale recovered onside kick with seconds left to ensure a 34-29 Harvard defeat, players let out a scream and streamed back onto the field to celebrate, smoke cigars, lift a trophy and sing “Roar, Lion, Roar” with family and friends. Who would have thunk it? “You had the realization of, oh, I’m a champion, which is something that hasn’t been said here in a while,” co-captain CJ Brown said. Harvard dropped into a tie with Columbia and Dartmouth at 5-2, the first time three teams shared the title since 1982 — the conference doesn't use tiebreakers. “It was nerve-wracking, for sure, but definitely exciting because that's something that not a lot of people have experienced, especially here," running back Joey Giorgi said. There have been several top players at Columbia — Sid Luckman, Marty Domres, Marcellus Wiley among them — but the school is perhaps better known for owners such as the New England Patriots' Robert Kraft and former Cleveland Browns head Al Lerner. Columbia's only previous championship in 1961 also was shared with Harvard. That Lions team was coached by Buff Donelli, a former Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Rams coach who scored for the Americans in soccer's 1934 World Cup. Columbia set a then Division I-AA record with 44 consecutive losses from 1983-88, a mark broken by Prairie View’s 80 in a row from 1989-98. Since 1971, the Lions’ only seasons with winning records until now were 1994, 1996, 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022. Al Bagnoli, who won nine Ivy titles in 23 years at Penn, couldn't manage one at Columbia from 2015-22. He quit six weeks before the 2023 opener, citing health, and was replaced on an interim basis by Mark Fabish, his offensive coordinator. Jon Poppe, now 39, was hired last December after working as a Bagnoli assistant at Columbia from 2015-17 between stints at Harvard from 2011-14 and 2017-22, plus one season as a head coach at Division III Union College. He led the Lions to a 7-3 record overall, their most wins in a coach's first season since George F. Sanford's team went 9-3 in 1899. Poppe had wife Anna and 7-year-old daughter with him in the locker room watching the countdown to the title. “Sixty-three years of whatever into now,” he said. “Just seeing a lot of that history myself, personally. This is a hugely — a feeling of elation, seeing my dad on the field, a lot of emotional things with that.” Before a crowd of 4,224, quarterback Caleb Sanchez's 1-yard touchdown run put Columbia ahead in the second quarter. Giorgi's 1-yard TD run opened a 14-3 lead in the third and Hugo Merry added a 25-yard field goal in the fourth, overcoming three field goals by Alan Zhao. Giorgi rushed for 165 yards and finished his career with 2,112, second in school history. He and Brown missed what would have been their freshman season in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. Given Columbia's athletic history — the most successful sport is fencing — it is not an obvious football destination. “I saw the dedication, whether it resulted in wins or losses,” Brown said. “I saw their dedication to the product that they put out on the field and also the athletic department, the facilities that we had here, the busses on schedule and stuff, I was like, OK, they care about their athletes. People here want to win and it doesn’t matter what’s happened in the past, it matters what we’re going to do now.” Poppe cited a mindset. “You get 10 opportunities, unlike other sports, it is a grind to play this sport and prepare the way we do just for 10,” he said. As the final whistle sounded in Boston, Brown noted an unusual initial reaction in the locker room. “It was like kind of awe when they recovered the kick,” he said. “It was a lot quieter than you would think it would be, but you could feel the joy and the elation.” They accomplished what more than six decades of their predecessors had failed to. As the players headed out, Poppe had a final word. “Day off tomorrow,” he said. Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . However, some smaller banks have chosen to take a different approach by offering higher interest rates to attract and retain depositors.

( MENAFN - Newsroom Panama) Panama is saved, Moody's Ratings maintained the country's investment grade rating, but changed the outlook from stable to negative. Last Tuesday, November 26, the rating agency Standard & Poor's lowered the credit rating, leaving the country one step away from losing its investment grade. Moody's, on the other hand, kept the country in investment territory, but one step away from losing it and with a negative outlook. The agency affirmed the issuer and long-term senior unsecured debt ratings at Baa3, as well as the long-term ratings of the senior unsecured debt program at Baa3. The report also noted that the negative outlook reflects the greater-than-expected deterioration in the country's 2024 fiscal balance and significant obstacles to achieving rapid fiscal consolidation, which points to risks that debt indicators could weaken considerably. With Moody's rating, Panama is one step away from losing its investment grade, as is the case with S&P, while with Fitch the country was left without investment grade since March of this year. “Despite the new government's willingness to address structural fiscal challenges, as evidenced by the ongoing discussion on pension reform, underlying budgetary rigidities could limit the authorities' ability to materially reduce fiscal deficits and stabilize debt ratios ,” Moody's warns. Panama's total debt balance reached $53,809 million as of October 31, representing 61.6% of the nominal gross domestic product projected by the MEF, estimated at $87,347 million for 2024. While the fiscal deficit expected for this year will be higher than 4.5% and for 2025 at 4%. Moody's expects this year's fiscal deficit to exceed 6% of GDP, compared with a deficit limit of 2% of GDP originally set by the fiscal rule. While it estimates the debt-to-GDP ratio to approach 61%, exceeding the median of 56%, and debt affordability to weaken significantly, with the interest-to-income ratio projected at 19%, down from 14% in 2023, well above the median of 10%. Furthermore, it indicates that this scenario in the country would affect the credibility of fiscal policy, increasing the sovereign's borrowing costs and further deteriorating access to debt. “Other credit risks come from contingent liabilities related to the Social Security Fund (CSS) and litigation associated with the Cobre Panamá mine.” In the report, Moody's says that the affirmation of the Baa3 rating reflects the opinion that Panama's economic strength continues to support its sovereign credit profile, and that it expects economic growth to remain solid compared to other similar economies. “We also highlight the government's greater willingness to implement policies that address fiscal pressures, in contrast to previous administrations.” In a statement, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Felipe Chapman, said that the government's commitment to financial discipline has been reaffirmed, emphasizing that the fiscal deterioration, referred to by both rating agencies, Moody's and S&P, affects everyone; hence the importance of having responsible regulatory frameworks that ensure economic stability and the well-being of the population. “These warnings from the rating agency are an additional alert to the one issued this week by Standard & Poor's (S&P), which revised Panama's sovereign rating from BBB to BBB-, emphasizing in its report actions that strengthen tax collection. The rating changes were one of the risks anticipated by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Felipe Chapman, before taking office,” the MEF said in a statement. In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Charles Kushner, the father of Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, as being a “tremendous business leader.” Trump added that Charles Kushner would “be a strong advocate representing” the nation and “its interests.” Jared Kushner, who is married to Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, has previously stated that he would not return to the White House if Trump won the election. “I am pleased to nominate Charles Kushner, of New Jersey, to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to France,” Trump wrote in his post. “He is a tremendous business leader, philanthropist, & dealmaker, who will be a strong advocate representing our Country and its interests.” “Charlie is the Founder & Chairman of Kushner Companies, one of the largest & most successful privately held Real Estate firms in the Nation,” Trump added. “He was recognized as New Jersey Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young, appointed to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council, & served as a Commissioner, & Chairman, of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, as well as on the Boards of our top institutions, including NYU.” As Breitbart News previously reported , in December 2020, Charles Kushner was among the 16 people that Trump pardoned. In 2005, Charles Kushner was sentenced to serve two years in federal prison after he plead guilty to “18 counts of tax evasion, witness tampering and making illegal campaign donations,” according to the New York Times . “Congratulations to Charlie, his wonderful wife Seryl, their 4 children, & 14 grandchildren,” Trump added in his post. “His son, Jared, worked closely with me in the White House, in particular on Operation Warp Speed, Criminal Justice Reform, & the Abraham Accords. Together, we will strengthen America’s partnership with France, our oldest Ally, & one of our greatest!”After his team's 102-89 home win on Wednesday night over Purdue Fort Wayne, Penn State coach Mike Rhoades challenged his team's fan base to show up and make more noise. "Sweat with us," he said at one point. At 5-0, the Nittany Lions haven't had to sweat much to get off to a fast start. They might not have to expend much perspiration to make it 6-0 on Monday when they meet Fordham in a semifinal matchup at the Sunshine Slam tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla. Penn State hasn't played a strong schedule so far, but the team has been impressive. It's averaging 98.2 points per game and 13.8 steals per game, both of which ranked second in Division I through Saturday's play. The Nittany Lions were seventh per in turnover rate, forcing 25.3 per 100 possessions. Point guard Ace Baldwin Jr. is leading the charge, scoring 16.4 points and dishing out 7.8 assists while chipping in 2.6 steals. Zach Hicks has nearly doubled his scoring average from 8.4 last season to 15.8 this season, while Northern Illinois transfer Yanic Konan Niederhauser has beefed up the interior, tallying 12.2 points and 7.2 rebounds. Meanwhile, Fordham (3-3) is coming off a 73-71 home loss Friday night against Drexel in New York. The Rams blew a seven-point lead early in the second half and missed a chance to force overtime when leading scorer Jackie Johnson III missed a layup as time expired. Johnson, a UNLV transfer, is averaging 19 points per game and is making nearly 48 percent of his shots as one of three Rams with double-figure scoring averages. Jahmere Tripp scores at an 11.0 clip while Japhet Medor is contributed 10.5, but Fordham is struggling to make shots, canning only 41.5 percent from the field. The Rams were picked for a 14th-place finish in the Atlantic 10 despite returning more scoring than any team in the league except for VCU. Third-year coach Keith Urgo thinks his team can defy low external expectations. "We're experienced and I think we're poised to have a tremendous year," he said. --Field Level Media
