By Sheila Carrillo Last week, I joined in the flurry of preparations for a full-on gourmet Thanksgiving meal at the free annual downtown Vet’s Hall feast, beautifully covered by Sentinel reporter Jessica York. One of dozens of volunteers, I parked my car in the adjacent bank parking lot and headed for the hall’s side entrance, surprised to encounter an outdoor kitchen set up by iconic chef Joseph Schultz, who was frantically scurrying amongst a steaming cauldron of boiling red-skinned potatoes and an enormous wok with vegetables being stirred with an oar-like paddle. Inside, room-length rows of tables were being adorned with fall colors while an assortment of tempting desserts — donated by the best of our outstanding bakeries — were portioned off onto real plates. I wound up stationed by the front entry door, assigned to wrap eating utensils in paper napkins, tying each bundle of silverware with gift ribbon. Awkward fingers and short patience found me up and stretching my legs as the first diners entered and approached a full-course Thanksgiving meal being served from warming trays brimming with turkey roasted by Beckman’s Bakery and mounds of luscious trimmings cooked by Joe from his van and parking-lot kitchen. Pacing, I heard a woman behind me — the first to enter the door— murmur that she didn’t know if she would be able to help herself to food. Turning, I saw a small elderly figure leaning on a walker and offered to fill a plate for her. After seating her with her plate, I picked up water and chocolate milk at the nearby drink table. When I turned back to bring her drinks, my heart sank. She sat softly weeping, head bent over her plate, food untouched. I leaned close to hear her whisper, “I haven’t eaten in three days. I am so grateful for the food.” I put my hand on her boney back, stroking her gently to soothe her. Recalling a past experience with someone who hadn’t eaten for days, I prompted the woman, who sat staring at her overflowing plate, to be careful to eat very slowly. Crying softly, she told me she had been sleeping in her car, that she had been in the hospital in Merced and when she returned to Santa Cruz, the door to her Grandview apartment was locked. Alarmed, my mind began racing for solutions, and I reassured her that I would find her some help. A woman sitting across from her put her hands together in prayer and thanks as I ran to the organizers, told them her situation, and asked if there was anyone present connected with social services who could help her. Shocked that I turned up nothing helpful, I ran back to tell her not to leave while I sought help. Sitting on a bench in a quieter corner of the entry hall, I made phone calls, starting with the nearby Salvation Army and Housing Matters, and then all the shelter phone numbers I could find. All I got was recorded messages saying to leave my name and number for shelter and safe parking wait lists. Not having taken her phone number, I awkwardly left mine. I never reached a live person, though one message said that my call would be returned within two hours. When I rushed back to the table, she was gone. Others at the table said that she had become cold, and there were no blankets around. She left to warm up and had taken her foil-wrapped plate with her. The woman who had shown me gratitude said she feared for the elderly woman’s life — that being that cold could be a sign she was dying. Kicking myself for not taking her name and phone number and not even remembering the name she had told me when I introduced myself, I alerted organizers to keep an eye out for her should she return. Reluctantly, I went to join family friends for dinner. As I walked out of Vet’s Hall, a tall man in a suit, said to me — as to everyone leaving — “Have you had your Thanksgiving dinner?” and then reached out to hand me a dollar bill. “Really?” I thought. P.S. Five days later, I got a response to my urgent messages regarding shelter. I learned that the shelter phone service is only available 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. An animated game, anyway. The real game takes place at Madison Square Garden, where Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs face the New York Knicks in a game televised on ABC and ESPN and streamed on Disney+ and ESPN+. The special alt-cast, the first animated presentation of an NBA game, will be shown on ESPN2 and also stream on Disney+ and ESPN+. Madison Square Garden is a staple of the NBA's Christmas schedule. Now it merges with a bigger home of the holidays, because the "Dunk the Halls" game will be staged at Disney, on a court set up right smack in the middle of where countless families have posed for vacation photos. Why that location? Because it was Mickey Mouse's Christmas wish. "Basketball courts often have the ability to make a normal environment look special, but in Disney it can only turn out incredible," Wembanyama said in an ESPN video promoting his Christmas debut. The story — this is Disney, after all — begins with Mickey penning a letter to Santa Claus, asking if he and his pals can host a basketball game. They'll not only get to watch one with NBA players, but some of them will even get to play. Goofy and Donald Duck will sub in for a couple Knicks players, while Mickey and Minnie Mouse will come on to play for the Spurs. "It looks to me like Goofy and Jalen Brunson have a really good pick-and-roll at the elite level," said Phil Orlins, an ESPN vice president of production. Walt Disney World hosted real NBA games in 2020, when the league set up there to complete its season that had been suspended by the COVID-19 pandemic. Those games were played at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. The setting for the Christmas game will be Main Street USA, at the entrance of the Magic Kingdom. Viewers will recognize Cinderella's castle behind one baseline and the train station at the other end, and perhaps some shops they have visited in between. Previous alternate animated broadcasts included an NFL game taking place in Andy's room from "Toy Story;" the "NHL Big City Greens Classic" during a game between the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers; and earlier this month, another NFL matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys also taking place at Springfield's Atoms Stadium as part of "The Simpsons Funday Football." Unlike basketball, the players are helmeted in those sports. So, this telecast required an extra level of detail and cooperation with players and teams to create accurate appearances of their faces and hairstyles. "So, this is a level of detail that we've never gone, that we've never done on any other broadcast," said David Sparrgrove, the senior director of creative animation for ESPN. Wembanyama, the 7-foot-3 phenom from France who was last season's NBA Rookie of the Year, looks huge even among most NBA players. The creators of the alternate telecast had to design how he'd look not only among his teammates and rivals, but among mice, ducks and chipmunks. "Like, Victor Wembanyama, seeing him in person is insane. It's like seeing an alien descend on a basketball court, and I think we kind of captured that in his animated character," said Drew Carter, who will again handle play-by-play duties, as he had in the previous animated telecasts, and will get an assist from sideline reporter Daisy Duck. Wembanyama's presence is one reason the Spurs-Knicks matchup, the leadoff to the NBA's five-game Christmas slate, was the obvious choice to do the animated telecast. The noon EST start means it will begin in the early evening in France and should draw well there. Also, it comes after ABC televises the "Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade" for the previous two hours, providing more time to hype the broadcast. Recognizing that some viewers who then switch over to the animated game may be Disney experts but NBA novices, there will be 10 educational explainers to help with basketball lingo and rules. Beyond Sports' visualization technology and Sony's Hawk-Eye tracking allow the animated players to make the same movements and plays made moments earlier by the real ones at MSG. Carter and analyst Monica McNutt will be animated in the style of the telecast, donning VR headsets to experience the game from Main Street, USA. Other animated faces recognizable to some viewers include NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who will judge a halftime dunk contest among Mickey and his friends, and Santa himself, who will operate ESPN's "SkyCam" during the game. The players are curious how the production — and themselves — will look. "It's going to be so crazy to see the game animated," Spurs veteran Chris Paul said. "I think what's dope about it is it will give kids another opportunity to watch a game and to see us, basically, as characters." But a conspicuous handful of filmmaking lions in winter, or let’s say late autumn, have given us new reasons to be grateful for their work over the decades — even for the work that didn’t quite work. Which, yes, sounds like ingratitude. But do we even want more conventional or better-behaved work from talents such as Francis Ford Coppola? Even if we’re talking about “Megalopolis” ? If Clint Eastwood’s “Juror #2” gave audiences a less morally complicated courtroom drama, would that have mattered, given Warner Bros.’ butt-headed decision to plop it in less than three dozen movie theaters in the U.S.? Coppola is 85. Eastwood is 94. Paul Schrader, whose latest film “Oh, Canada” arrives this week and is well worth seeking out, is a mere 78. Based on the 2021 Russell Banks novel “Foregone,” “Oh, Canada” is the story of a documentary filmmaker, played by Richard Gere, being interviewed near the end of his cancer-shrouded final days. In the Montreal home he shares with his wife and creative partner, played by Uma Thurman, he consents to the interview by two former students of his. Gere’s character, Leonard Fife, has no little contempt for these two, whom he calls “Mr. and Mrs. Ken Burns of Canada” with subtle disdain. As we learn over the artful dodges and layers of past and present, events imagined and/or real, Fife treats the interview as a final confession from a guarded and deceptive soul. He’s also a hero to everyone in the room, famous for his anti-Vietnam war political activism, and for the Frederick Wiseman-like inflection of his own films’ interview techniques. The real-life filmmaker name-checked in “Oh, Canada” is documentarian Errol Morris, whose straight-to-the-lens framing of interview subjects was made possible by his Interrotron device. In Schrader’s adaptation, Fife doesn’t want the nominal director (Michael Imperioli, a nicely finessed embodiment of a second-rate talent with first-rate airs) in his eyeline. Rather, as he struggles with hazy, self-incriminating memories of affairs, marriages, one-offs with a friend’s wife and a tense, brief reunion with the son he never knew, Fife wants only his wife, Emma — his former Goddard College student — in this metaphoric confessional. Schrader and his editor Benjamin Rodriguez Jr. treat the memories as on-screen flashbacks spanning from 1968 to 2023. At times, Gere and Thurman appear as their decades-young selves, without any attempt to de-age them, digitally or otherwise. (Thank god, I kind of hate that stuff in any circumstance.) In other sequences from Fife’s past, Jacob Elordi portrays Fife, with sly and convincing behavioral details linking his performance to Gere’s persona. We hear frequent voiceovers spoken by Gere about having ruined his life by age 24, at least spiritually or morally. Banks’ novel is no less devoted to a dying man’s addled but ardent attempt to come clean and own up to what has terrified him the most in the mess and joy of living: Honesty. Love. Commitment. There are elements of “Oh, Canada” that soften Banks’ conception of Fife, from the parentage of Fife’s abandoned son to the specific qualities of Gere’s performance. It has been 44 years since Gere teamed with Schrader on “American Gigolo,” a movie made by a very different filmmaker with very different preoccupations of hetero male hollowness. It’s also clearly the same director at work, I think. And Gere remains a unique camera object, with a stunning mastery of filling a close-up with an unblinking stillness conveying feelings easier left behind. The musical score is pretty watery, and with Schrader you always get a few lines of tortured rhetoric interrupting the good stuff. In the end, “Oh, Canada” has an extraordinarily simple idea at its core: That of a man with a movie camera, most of his life, now on the other side of the lens. Not easy. “I can’t tell the truth unless that camera’s on!” he barks at one point. I don’t think the line from the novel made it into Schrader’s script, but it too sums up this lion-in-winter feeling of truth without triumphal Hollywood catharsis. The interview, Banks wrote, is one’s man’s “last chance to stop lying.” It’s also a “final prayer,” dramatized by the Calvinist-to-the-bone filmmaker who made sure to include that phrase in his latest devotion to final prayers and missions of redemption. “Oh, Canada” — 3 stars (out of 4) No MPA rating (some language and sexual material) Running time: 1:34 How to watch: Opens in theaters Dec. 13, running 1in Chicago Dec. 13-19 at the Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. Bryce Thompson scored 17 points and achieved a milestone as Oklahoma State defeated Miami 80-74 on Friday afternoon in a Charleston Classic consolation game in Charleston, S.C. Thompson made 6-of-14 shots from the floor, surpassing 1,000 points for his career at Oklahoma State (4-1), which also got 15 points from Marchelus Avery. The Cowboys won in large part thanks to their impressive 3-point shooting (10-for-22, 45.5 percent). Oklahoma State backup guard Arturo Dean, a Miami native, posted eight points and one steal. MANCHESTER, NH – The long-awaited Phase Two of the Manchester School District’s Long Term Facilities Plan is set to be discussed at the Manchester Board of School Committee’s meeting on Monday Dec. 9. In this new phase, all of Manchester’s 12 existing public elementary schools will receive updates – excluding for Beech Street Elementary School, which was proposed to be rebuilt across the street from its current location as part of the first phase of the facilities plan. That proposal is dependent on a land swap which stalled out two weeks ago after the Manchester Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted 8-7 to “pause” the project. In addition to Beech Street, there will be new buildings at Bakersville, Gossler Park, Jewett Street, Smyth Road and Webster Elementary Schools. Weston, Northwest, McDonough, Parker-Varney, Highland-Goffes Falls, and Green Acres will receive renovations. The schools will be rebuilt or renovated in four phases: Gossler Park, Jewett Street and Smyth Road in the first group (2026-2032), Bakersville, McDonough and Webster in the second group (2033-2039), Highland-Goffe’s Falls, Northwest, Weston in the third group (2040-2046) and Green Acres and Parker Varney in the final group (2047-2053). With the first phase of the facilities plan finalizing the transition of fifth grade public school classes into the city’s four public middle schools, there are no further plans for the middle schools in Phase Two. However, the city’s public high schools will receive a complete update. Manchester West, Central and Memorial High Schools will remain at their existing locations, with Career and Technical studies offered at the Manchester School of Technology distributed among Central and Memorial, with a Magnet School for the Arts joining the general studies program at West. Central in particular will be completely rebuilt, either on its current campus or at an alternative location not mentioned in the agenda materials for next week’s Board of School Committee meeting. Plans for both potential rebuilt Central High Schools are projected at five stories tall, with the option remaining at the current campus removing existing underground parking. Memorial would also be rebuilt on its current campus along the edge of Weston Road, with parking and athletic fields placed at the current location of the school building. Central’s design and construction would take place from 2026 to 2033, followed by Memorial (2033-2040) and West (2040-2047). The current Manchester School of Technology building would be transformed into potential central offices for the district, a special needs school for Grades 5-12, transportation offices, adult education services. This transformation would take place only after conclusion of the Central and Memorial plans. Costs for the elementary school proposals in Phase 2 range from $852 to $894 million. The high school cost will range from $1.365 to $1.433 billion. TORONTO — Canada's main stock index lost nearly 250 points Thursday, led by weakness in energy and base metals, while U.S. markets also fell. The S&P/TSX composite index closed down 246.99 points at 25,410.71. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 234.44 points at 43,914.12. The S&P 500 index was down 32.94 points at 6,051.25, while the Nasdaq composite was down 132.05 points at 19,902.84. “I think the markets had some time to now digest where rates could be going into the near term,” said Adelaide Chiu, portfolio manager, vice-president and head of responsible investing at NEI Investments. On Wednesday, the Bank of Canada announced an outsized half-percentage point interest rate cut and signalled it would slow the pace of cuts going forward. “With the policy rate now substantially lower, we anticipate a more gradual approach to monetary policy if the economy evolves broadly as expected," said Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem. And in the U.S., the monthly report on consumer inflation came in largely as expected, helping set the stage for a quarter-point cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve next week. Globally, interest rate cuts are moderating as inflation reaches targets, Chiu said. A large study found that greater exposure to long-term air pollution was linked with increased risks for blood clots that can occur in deep veins, which, if untreated, can block blood flow and cause serious complications, even death. These findings came from a longitudinal study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that included 6,651 U.S. adults who were followed for an average of 17 years between 2000 and 2018. Participants lived in or near one of six major metropolitan areas: New York, Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Throughout the study, 248 adults, 3.7% of the study sample, developed blood clots in deep veins that required hospital care. The likelihood of this outcome was linked to anywhere from a 39% to a more than two-fold increased risk based on long-term exposure to three different types of air pollutants. Blood clots in deep veins, collectively known as venous thromboembolism (VTE), include deep vein thrombosis, which occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein of the legs, arms, or an internal organ, and pulmonary embolism, which occurs when a blood clot breaks off from a deep vein and travels to the lungs. Exposure to air pollution, which can set the stage for inflammation and contribute to blood clotting, has long been associated with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. While previous research has also suggested a link to VTE, this is the largest, most comprehensive U.S. study to report that association with three different types of air pollutants. This included exposure to tiny air pollution particles equal to or less than 2.5 micrometers(link is external), which can be inhaled from a variety of sources, including smoke from coal-burning power plants, forest fires, and motor vehicle exhaust. Participants with greater overall exposure to this type of air pollution had a 39% increased associated risk for VTE compared to people exposed to lower levels. People with increased exposure to oxides of nitrogen(link is external) and nitrogen dioxide(link is external), pollutants most often found from vehicle exhaust, had a respective 121% to 174% increased risk. To reach these findings, the researchers analyzed the relationship between patients hospitalized for VTE and levels of air pollution collected through extensive biweekly community-level monitoring — including samples taken from the homes of participants. They then compared those with the highest exposure levels — the top 75% — to those with the lowest exposure — the bottom 25%. They also conducted multiple analyses to control for variables associated with VTE, such as age, exposure to tobacco, and underlying respiratory and other health conditions. If the cited amount in mismanagement of 73.5 billion tenge over six years is true, it is scandalous. However, we do not know what the auditors' definition and criteria of mismanagement is. So, let's first find out what the report actually says. What is clear, however, is the outcome of a 2023 internal audit of NU's Social Development Fund (SDF) , and it is sobering. This SDF audit reveals a blatant disregard of corporate governance principles, where individuals entrusted with university resources prioritized personal gain over the mission of NU. The audit revealed that SDF management led by current NU Executive Vice President Aslan Sarinzhipov constructed an intricate web of subsidiary entities, including abroad, to systematically evade the oversight and control of the University. Funds ( over 14 billion tenge ) meant to assist students and faculty were used for personal gains of Aslan Sarinzhipov and questionable deals. Unfortunately, NU senior officials such as Vice President Kadisha Dairova participated in such schemes. When I voiced my concern earlier over the developments at NU, it is largely because of the track record of senior officials there.
