Share a virtual helicopter with fair dinkum Hollywood royalty as the secrets of ancient landscapes are conquered by high-tech drones in Australia's vast, rugged northwest. "It gets under your skin. It's one of the last truly great wildernesses left on Earth," Luke Hemsworth, older brother to Liam and Chris, tells fellow explorers on a virtual flight into the Kimberley region. Isolation has helped to preserve the remote part of Western Australia as a biodiversity hotspot and keeper of deep-time stories. It is home to some of the world's biggest tides, rock formations that date back two billion years, and the world's oldest rock art galleries that have layers of images where artists have returned several thousand years after the first painters. Hemsworth says the area has always had an "inexplicable pull" for him, so when he finished high school in Melbourne he flew to the remote northwest region of Australia to work on a pearl farm and explore. He was also an obvious choice for the latest ground-breaking virtual reality (VR) documentary from award-winning Australian filmmaker Briege Whitehead. "There really is nowhere else like it on the planet," Hemsworth says, as narrator of The Great Kimberley Wilderness by White Spark Pictures. Whitehead says it took four years to create the 35-minute film, the first of a three-film deal with the National Museum of Australia, the Western Australian Museum, Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum and ScreenWest. "There's a lot of innovative technology that's going into it ... for the night-time lapses in particular," she said. A scene where the Milky Way perfectly aligns within Cathedral Gorge, which only happens for three nights of the year, required custom-built equipment they developed with tech giant Canon and local firm Camera Electronic. Otherwise, the cameras used for 360-degree filming look like giant soccer balls, with eight lenses around them to create the sense of immersion. "It is essentially eight cameras in one, to achieve shots like that," Whitehead explained. Nor was there a drone set-up available off the shelf that could carry a 6.5kg, 360-degree camera so they customised that with internationally renowned XM2, which also worked with environmentalist Bob Brown on his recent film The Giants. White Spark Pictures says it is the first in the world to produce high-resolution video that is 360-degree and 3D, with drone shots that are then stabilised using their own technology. "We shoot everything between 8K and 12K, so as VR headsets get better and better, it's already future-proofed," Whitehead said. "We do all our sound mixing at Warner Bros in LA, and this was the first film that we've done Dolby Atmos theatrical VR sound mix - it's a first in the world for this medium, which is also why it sounds so amazing." Working with more than 11 Indigenous communities, Whitehead said creating the sense of presence required a "very fine balance" to be struck in what stories they wanted to tell - to simultaneously avert future foot traffic and welcome people to explore in the right way. The audience can journey to the three-tiered waterfalls in Carr-Boyd Ranges, filmed on Miriuwung Country, and to Oomari (King George Falls), filmed on Balanggarra Country, where a tourist could not go for cultural reasons. Beloved British animated couple Wallace and Gromit are returning to screens in their first feature-length film in 20 years for a typically mad-cap adventure that spotlights the dangers of technology in the wrong hands. "Vengeance Most Fowl" will air on the BBC on Christmas Day for the first time before being made available on the Netflix platform from January 3 worldwide. Inventor and director Nick Park has returned to the technology theme that he explored in his 1993 Oscar-winning hit "The Wrong Trousers", but updated to take into account the advent of artificial intelligence (AI). The tale centers on tea and cheese-loving Wallace's latest invention: an "intelligent" robotic gnome called Norbot, which helps around the house and garden, threatening to replace the ever-loyal Gromit, who takes pride in the daily tasks of life. "Wallace is completely deluded and obsessed, whereas Gromit represents the human touch," Park told AFP in a pre-release interview. "He likes doing his gardening. It's not about just seeing an end result, it's the act of doing that is enjoyable. "I love the fact that we have technology. We have to just sometimes ask: is it always enhancing our lives and our relationships, or is it somehow diminishing them in some way?" Park has shown loyalty to the idea of "doing" throughout his four-decade career and still insists on real-world modelling to create Wallace and Gromit instead of resorting to computerised imagery. At his Aardman Animations studio -- makers of other hits including "Chicken Run" and "Shaun the Sheep" -- films are shot frame-by-frame, with clay models slowly moved and altered in a technique known as "stop motion" that dates back to the dawn of cinema. At their fastest rate, the 200-person production team for "Vengeance Most Fowl" produced two minutes of film per week. "Everything's made by real human beings and that hopefully shines off the screen," Park said. The limitations actually spur creativity, he insists, and are a core part of the franchise's appeal. "With CGI (computer-generated imagery) I guess you are tempted to just use it to the full. You've got everything at your disposal," he said. "Whereas I think if you don't have that, you tend to be more creative with what little you've got." The film sees the return of the villainous penguin Feathers McGraw from "The Wrong Trousers", which won an Oscar for best short animated film. Feathers McGraw is blank-faced throughout, but his on-screen menace is always obvious -- often to comical effect -- while a full range of emotions are expressed, as ever, through the legendary eyebrows of Gromit. "Very small nuanced movements can say a lot," Park said. One small change to listen out for in the new film is Wallace's new voice after the death of English actor Peter Sallis, who had played him since his debut in 1989. Up in Salmon Arm, the theft of a parrot from a local pet store had local RCMP and the community on the lookout, even offering a cash reward. Sightings were reported and chased down for hours, until finally, Ed’s World of Critters and Supplies staff were able to retrieve the bird from the thief. When the bird was returned to the store, it was promptly purchased by a customer, who had been saving up for months to bring him home. In Kamloops, efforts from three young kids resulted in a swing set getting installed a local park. With the help of their parents, Sitka Porte r put together a petition in April asking the city to install swings at the North Shore playground. “I personally like swings because you can go really fast and very high,” said eight-year-old Porter. “It’s kind of just an essential for a park — and this park has no swings.” The petition got traction from the kids’ door-knocking and online presence, resulting in a conversation with the city’s parks division. In early summer, upgrades planned for another Park allowed for a swing set to become available, which was installed at a local park at the end of November. A Kamloops Grade 12 student made history in November at the BC School Sports swimming championships, setting three records while taking home four gold medals. Surgical equipment provided to midwives Dr Shah says that MNCH programme, in collaboration with JICA, has been operating in remote parts of KP, including Mansehra MANSEHRA: The Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) programme in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency on Sunday provided surgical equipment to qualified midwives to establish birth stations in remote parts of Mansehra and Torghar districts. “We are implementing a comprehensive strategy to set up birth stations in remote parts of the Hazara division to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates,” Dr Shah Faisal Khanzada, the district health officer, told a ceremony at the Community Midwifery School here. The surgical equipment was given away to 14 qualified midwives for birth stations in the both districts. “These midwives, who have previously undergone modern training courses in obstetrics, as well as pre-and post-natal care, will establish birth stations in remote areas of both the districts,” Dr Khanzada said. He said that the MNCH programme, in collaboration with JICA, has been operating in remote parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Mansehra, Battagram, and Torghar, where 24 such stations have already been established. Dr Tariq Shah, a representative of the international programme, said that Dr Khizra Hayat, provincial coordinator for MNCH in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has been focusing on addressing maternal and infant health issues, particularly in rural areas. The event was also attended by divisional social organiser for MNCH in Hazara, Hameed Turabi; district head Sayyar Khan and others. “This is why local educated girls are first trained in modern healthcare and obstetric practices and then deployed in their respective communities to provide essential healthcare and obstetric services to pregnant and lactating mothers,” said Turabi.

The impressively large boulders, called armour stones, are being temporarily stored next to the Barbados Association of Retailers, Vendors and Entrepreneurs’ market along the Mighty Grynner Highway. Senior Minister in charge of Infrastructural Projects and Town Planning Matters Dr William Duguid said the approximately two-acre area would serve as the loading point for the repair work. “That is an area being prepared for the armour stones that will repair the fishing harbour. So as they come in from the port, they will be stored there and then they’ll be used to repair the fishing harbour that was damaged. It’s being prepared so that as they arrive, we get them out of the port quickly and store them there for easy access,” he told the DAILY NATION. Duguid said he was not up to date with all the information and directed further enquiries to C. O. Williams Construction, which he said was working with the contractor on the project. C. O. Williams general manager Marc Atwell said their current purview was solely the offloading and stockpiling of the stones and could offer no information regarding contractors. He said each stone was made of granite and weighed anywhere between ten and 13 tonnes. “We have to stockpile there because the normal area where you would stockpile over by the Flour Mill, a lot of the fishing boats themselves are out there under repair. There really wasn’t much room so everything right now is just stockpiling in preparation for the works to start next year,” he said. Atwell added that the stones would be moved to Fisheries as needed, adding they could not be stored there either because there was not much available room. “So that’s kind of the closest place that we could find within the area that made sense. Obviously, we would have liked this to be done before the fishing season started, but it’s timing with the boat and when it arrives,” he said. The general manager said a decision was made not to reuse the concrete dolos currently making up the breakwater. “The engineers, Baird & Associates, are the engineers for the client – the port. They came up with [a new design]. The dolos are old technology, and they felt that the armour stone would be a faster and better solution. But they would more be able to speak to that.” Atwell said it was all systems go to get the work done as soon as possible. “The port is pushing hard to get the job done as soon as possible and to get the boats back in safe harbour. Just to get those rocks in is a big effort.” In October, boat owner Shurland Clarke said he was less concerned about getting money from Government for repairs and more about the time it was taking for the breakwater to be replaced. “My problem is there are boats that get damaged, rebuilt and put back in the water, yet that breakwater still damaged. As more boats return to the dock, they will end up having to dock where there is no protection,” he said then. WASHINGTON — The House Ethics Committee on Monday accused Matt Gaetz of “regularly” paying for sex, including once with a 17-year-old girl, and purchasing and using illicit drugs as a member of Congress, as lawmakers released the conclusions of a nearly four-year investigation that helped sink his nomination for attorney general. The 37-page report by the bipartisan panel includes explicit details of sex-filled parties and vacations that Gaetz, now 42, took part in from 2017 to 2020 while the Republican represented Florida’s western Panhandle. Congressional investigators concluded that Gaetz violated multiple state laws related to sexual misconduct while in office, though not federal sex trafficking laws. They also found that Gaetz “knowingly and willfully sought to impede and obstruct” the committee’s work. “The Committee determined there is substantial evidence that Representative Gaetz violated House Rules and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, impermissible gifts, special favors or privileges, and obstruction of Congress,” the report said. Before the report came out, Gaetz denied any wrongdoing and criticized the committee’s process. “Giving funds to someone you are dating — that they didn’t ask for — and that isn’t ‘charged’ for sex is now prostitution?!?” he posted on X, the website formerly known as Twitter. “There is a reason they did this to me in a Christmas Eve-Eve report and not in a courtroom of any kind where I could present evidence and challenge witnesses.” Gaetz , who was first elected in 2017, spent the majority of his time in Washington enmeshed in scandals that ultimately derailed his selection by President-elect Donald Trump to lead the Justice Department . Gaetz abruptly resigned from Congress last month. His political future is uncertain, although Gaetz has indicated interest in running for the open Senate seat in Florida. The committee painted a damning portrait of Gaetz’s conduct, using dozens of pages of exhibits, including text messages, financial records, travel receipts, checks and online payments, to document a party and drug-fueled lifestyle. The committee said it compiled the evidence after issuing 29 subpoenas for documents and testimony and contacting more than two dozen witnesses. In addition to soliciting prostitution, the report said Gaetz “accepted gifts, including transportation and lodging in connection with a 2018 trip to the Bahamas, in excess of permissible amounts.” That same year, investigators said, Gaetz arranged for a staffer to obtain a passport for a woman with whom he was sexually involved, falsely telling the State Department that she was his constituent. In some of the text exchanges made public, he appeared to be inviting various women to events, getaways or parties, and arranging airplane travel and lodging. At one point he asked one woman if she had a “cute black dress” to wear. There were also discussions of shipping goods. One of the exhibits was a text exchange that appeared to be between two of the women concerned about their cash flow and payments. In another, a person asked Gaetz for help to pay an educational expense. Regarding the 17-year-old girl, the report said there was no evidence Gaetz knew she was a minor when he had sex with her. The woman told the committee she did not tell Gaetz she was under 18 at the time and that he learned she was a minor more than a month after the party. But Gaetz stayed in touch with her after that and met up with her for “commercial sex” again less than six months after she turned 18, according to the committee. Florida law says it is a felony for a person 24 or older to have sex with a minor. The law does not allow a claim of ignorance or misrepresentation of a minor’s age as a defense. Joel Leppard, who represents two women who told the committee that Gaetz paid them for sex, said the findings “vindicate” the accounts of his clients and “demonstrate their credibility.” “We appreciate the Committee’s commitment to transparency in releasing this comprehensive report so the truth can be known,” Leppard said in a statement. At least one Republican joined all five Democrats on the committee earlier this month in voting to release the report despite initial opposition from GOP lawmakers, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, to publishing findings about a former member of Congress. While ethics reports have previously been released after a member’s resignation, it is extremely rare. On behalf of the Republicans who voted against making the report public, the committee chairman, Rep. Michael Guest of Mississippi, wrote that while the members did not challenge the findings, “we take great exception that the majority deviated from the Committee’s well-established standards,” to drop any investigation when a person is not longer a member of the chamber. Guest added that releasing this report sets a precedent that “is a dangerous departure with potentially catastrophic consequences.” But Maryland Rep. Glenn Ivey, a Democratic member of the committee, said that for transparency, it was crucial for the public and Congress as an institution to read the findings. “I think that’s important for my colleagues here in the House to know how the committee reviews certain acts,” he told The Associated Press. “Some of these were obviously conduct that crossed the line, but some of them weren’t.” Mounting a last-ditch effort to halt the publication of the report, Gaetz filed a lawsuit Monday asking a federal court to intervene. He cited what he called “untruthful and defamatory information” that would “significantly damage” his “standing and reputation in the community.” Gaetz’s complaint argued that he was no longer under the committee’s jurisdiction because he had resigned from Congress. The often secretive, bipartisan committee has investigated claims against Gaetz since 2021. But its work became more urgent last month when Trump picked him shortly after the Nov. 5 election Day to be the nation’s top law enforcement officer. Gaetz resigned from Congress that same day, putting him outside the purview of the committee’s jurisdiction. But Democrats had pressed to make the report public even after Gaetz was no longer in the House and had withdrawn from consideration for Trump’s Cabinet. A vote on the House floor this month to force the report’s release failed; all but one Republican voted against it. The committee detailed its start-and-stop investigation over the past several years, which was halted for a time as the Justice Department conducted its own inquiry of Gaetz. Federal prosecutors never brought a case against him. Lawmakers said they asked the Justice Department for information about its investigation, but the agency refused to hand over information, saying it does not disclose information about investigations that do not result in charges. The committee then subpoenaed the department for records. After a back-and-forth between department officials and the committee, the department only handed over “publicly reported information about the testimony of a deceased individual,” according to the committee’s report. The report said Gaetz was “uncooperative” throughout the committee’s investigation.
