The West Kelowna Warriors addressed a need to their roster via trade on Tuesday, Nov. 26. In a press release, the team announced their have acquired Swedish defenceman Axel Lofgren from the Powell River Kings, in exchange for defenceman Landen Hilditch and forward Eliot Compton. Lofgren brings a scoring punch to the Warriors defensive core as he's currently fifth in scoring for BCHL defencemen with 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) in 20 games. "Lofgren is a big, mobile, smooth skating defenceman with great offensive instincts and ability to create offence." said Warriors Head Coach and General Manager Simon Ferguson. "We are very excited to add Axel to our d-core as we think he will be a great fit for our style of play. Obviously anytime you add a player of Axel’s calibre in a trade you have to move out some valuable players." Hilditch has a record year for the Warriors in 2023-24, recording 15 points in 51 games. He has just two assists in 19 games this year and in his career, has 26 points in 109 BCHL games. Compton, also heading to the Kings, has 13 points in 72 career games, all with the Warriors. "Landen and Eliot are both good hockey players and even better people which made moving them especially difficult. We wish them nothing but the best in their futures and we thank them for everything they have given to the community of West Kelowna," added Ferguson. Lofgren also brings some comradery to the Warriors, as he's going to reunite with Warriors' Elias Callgren. The two of them played together for Luleå HF J20 of the J20 Nationell League in Sweden last season. The Chicago Cubs are entering quite an important offseason. Last winter, they stole the Milwaukee Brewers manager, Craig Counsell, from the National League division rivals, but in Counsell's first season, the Cubs fell short of the postseason. Now, they have the winter to build the team of Counsell's dreams, though it may not be with the big name players that many imagined. USA Today's Bob Nightengale has reported the Cubs won't be landing any of the big free agents that the fans have been raving about. "Yet, instead of negotiating with any of the marquee free agents, they instead are focusing on the mid-market players. They're probably out on Soto, Burnes, Fried and Snell," Nightengale wrote. "The only thing that could change their plan is if they're able to unload first baseman/outfielder Cody Bellinger. The worst-kept secret at the GM meetings was the Cubs offering Bellinger to anyone and everyone. So far, no team has expressed strong interest." But, it doesn't seem likely at all that Chicago is able to move Bellinger unless they're willing to eat some of his contract. "Come on," one GM told Nightengale, "who's going to touch that contract? The risk is just too great for the production." With Bellinger likely to remain in the Windy City, the Cubs will need to pivot to cheaper options. They could look to boost their bullpen quite a bit this winter while also using the trade market to acquire cheaper players. Kentfield resident Heather McPhail Sridharan, one of two candidates in the Nov. 5 runoff election for a Board of Supervisors seat, has conceded the race to rival Brian Colbert of San Anselmo. McPhail Sridharan had fewer votes than Colbert in the preliminary count on Election Day, and she did not gain the lead as more ballots were counted. As of Thursday, Colbert had 14,408 votes, or 51.18%, and McPhail Sridharan had 13,402. The county elections office has tallied all but a few ballots and plans to release the final results on Dec. 3. McPhail Sridharan said she sent Colbert an email Wednesday night to concede and wish him luck. She also sent a message to her supporters: “I feel humbled by your unwavering support throughout the last eighteen months. Many people counted us out during this race and we showed that a grassroots, bottom-up effort led by individuals that care about our community is possible.” Colbert, a member of the San Anselmo Town Council, will become the county’s first Black supervisor. He will succeed Katie Rice, who declined to seek another term in the Ross Valley seat. She endorsed Colbert. Colbert led the field in the March primary but did not reach the 50% threshold to avoid a runoff with McPhail Sridharan, a former Kentfield School District trustee. While he presents himself as a moral politician, looking down on the U.S. President ( Billy Bob Thornton ) for making his own advances on Natalie, David acts on his attraction in the end nonetheless. While the pair ends up in a public, seemingly unproblematic relationship (for now) by the end of the film, we can’t overlook their checkered origins.
