By Yuji Yoshikata / Yomiuri Shimbun Correspondent 7:00 JST, December 11, 2024 TEHRAN — Last year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, who has been released temporarily from a Tehran prison on medical grounds, vowed to continue her fight for women’s rights. “I will not keep silent,” she said during an exclusive interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun. Mohammadi gave her first in-person interview with a media organization since receiving her Nobel Prize at her home in the Iranian capital on Thursday. Mohammadi, 52, a political prisoner, had surgery about three weeks ago mainly to remove a tumor from her right leg. She was granted temporary medical leave from prison on Dec. 4 for a period of 21 days. She has a brace on her right leg and currently uses a walker. But with her high spirits, she does not look like a longtime prisoner. “Within these 21 days, I will not keep silent,” Mohammadi said in the interview. “It doesn’t matter if these 21 days are going to change into two days or 22 days. It will not affect my decision.” She expressed deep concern about the oppression of women in Iran and Afghanistan, saying, “I think talking about peace and democracy in the current world without paying attention to women’s rights is impossible or meaningless.” Mohammadi on Thursday evening invited Yomiuri Shimbun reporters to her home, along with her relatives, fellow human rights activists and supporters. With the painful-looking brace on her right leg, she talked with the visitors for more than five hours. Mohammadi is a political prisoner who has been sentenced to lashings and a total of more than 30 years in prison on charges that include spreading propaganda against the state. However, the authorities have imposed no major restrictions on her during her release. No obvious signs of surveillance were seen around her home. Even if restrictions are imposed, “I will not accept them,” she insisted. According to Mohammadi, news of the Nobel prize win in October last year reached her through an inmate who had learned about it from another inmate who was allowed to talk on the phone with people outside the prison. “I think the Nobel Peace Prize created an opportunity not only for me but also for Iranian women and the country to accomplish democracy and achieve women’s rights,” said Mohammadi. Her 55-year-old brother, Mehdi, and his wife are currently in Tehran from Mashhad, northeastern Iran, to take care of Mohammadi. “Twenty-one days is too short. I hope the temporary release will become a full release,” he said. During the interview, Mohammadi also delivered a message for women in Japan. “I think that the interaction and dialogue between women in various societies can lead to reciprocal growth of the societies,” she said. “I hope that such dialogues and interactions will be created between women of Iran and Japan.” When the topic shifted to her 18-year-old twin children — Ali and Kiana, who live in exile in Paris with their 65-year-old father, Taghi Rahmani — Mohammadi walked over to where the wallpaper had been marked with the twins’ heights, and wondered aloud how tall her children had grown. About a decade ago, her twins fled Iran amid growing government pressure on Mohammadi, and Rahmani later joined them. Since then, Mohammadi has been unable to see them in person as she has been arrested and imprisoned multiple times. “When they were leaving [Iran], they were a bit taller than 1 meter,” she said while tracing with her finger over the wallpaper of cartoon animals where her twins’ heights had been marked. “I have kept this, so that when they come back someday, I will measure their height and know how much I have lost,” she said. Though a strong-willed human rights activist who has refused to buckle under pressure, Mohammadi is also motherly, and related how missing out on so much time with her children caused her “deep sorrow.” , human rights activist and journalist Born in Zanjan, northwestern Iran, in 1972, Mohammadi was arrested and imprisoned multiple times after writing articles criticizing the Iranian government in 1998. A role reversal doomed the No. 22 Xavier Musketeers in their only loss of the season, against Michigan at the Fort Myers Tip-Off on Wednesday. Normally a team that avoids committing turnovers and pressures its opponent into making them, Xavier (6-1) will try to recapture its early-season winning form when it hosts South Carolina State on Sunday in Cincinnati. Sarnia police have issued a public safety advisory in the area of Kathleen Avenue and East Street following the report of a disturbing break and enter. They say they were called to the area Tuesday just after 8:30 a.m. for a break and enter that had occurred earlier in the morning. According to police, a man had entered the residence where a woman was sleeping at about 3 a.m. Police say the woman woke up to the man standing beside her bed naked with a knife. After a struggle, the victim caused the man to drop the knife and flee the residence. Police say the victim was sexually assaulted but did not require medical attention. The man has been described as white, in his 20s, has a bald head, with a distinctive tattoo on the right side of his body. Officers are canvassing the area for any potential witnesses or video surveillance. Sarnia Police Service is requesting that anyone in the area of East Street/Wellington Street/Walnut Avenue South/Cherry Drive with dash cam or video surveillance to contact Sarnia Police Service Detective Reg Musclow at 519-344-8861 ext. 6198. DRIVERS who customize their license plates have been warned to fix their tags to avoid being slapped with fines costing over $100. The Florida Highway Patrol is cracking down on people with license plates that are airbrushed, vinyl-wrapped, or customized. Any changes to standard, state-issued license plates are prohibited thanks to a new rule that kicked in around August. This means you can't make aesthetic changes like swapping the color of your license plate or adding airbrushed designs. The alterations are illegal because they can affect the plate's reflectivity, safety features, and the yellow validation stickers, cops said. Cops have doubled down on the rule recently after it was revealed that citations for unlawful alterations have skyrocketed. READ MORE ROAD LAWS “We are trying to stop the current trend that we are seeing,” FHP's Lt. Alex Camacho said, according to ABC affiliate WPLG . “If you put this tag on your car, we are going to seize that tag. "You are going to get your vehicle towed and get an infraction for it." Camacho warned, “It’s bigger than people saying it’s not a big deal.” Most read in Motors License plate modifications can also include using license plate covers, illuminated devices, or anything that interferes with seeing the details on a plate. FHP is bringing down the hammer on illegal plates due to citations for these violations going up 98% since 2020. Depending on the county, anyone who violates the guidelines could be committing a non-criminal traffic infraction. Statewide, the penalties include a $60 fine, three points on the driver's license, and additional fees according to the county rules. In some Florida counties including Flagler County, drivers could face a fine of $116 for the violation, police said. If the Florida plate has been changed so it can't return to its original condition, the driver is required to get a replacement plate from their local tax collector. Driving on a public roadway with customized license plates is illegal in Florida. Florida Statutes Section 320.061 prohibits the unlawful altering of a license plate. The law states that altering or obscuring the following items is illegal: Motor vehicle registration certificates License plates Temporary license plates Mobile home stickers Validation stickers Drivers cannot mutilate, alter, deface, or change the color of the plate in any way. You can also not apply or attach the following to the license plate: Substance Reflective matter Illuminated device Spray Coating Covering Other material interfering with the legibility, angular visibility, or detectability of the license plate Nothing should interfere with the ability to record any feature or detail on the plate. "A person who violates this section commits a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a moving violation as provided in chapter 318," the law states. The penalties for the violations include a $60 fine, three points on the driver's license, and additional county fees. State troopers can also confiscate altered plates, leaving the owner to apply for a new plate. However, there are still ways to make your license plate stand out. SPECIALTY PLATES Florida offers over 100 specialty license plates for unique organizations. Specialty plate purchases send money to the causes they represent. Plus, drivers can order personalized license plates at some certified service centers - it's just decorating the plates unofficially that could lead to penalties. Biden did the second-guessing as he delivered a speech at the Brookings Institution defending his economic record and challenging Trump to preserve Democratic policy ideas when he returns to the White House next month. As Biden focused on his legacy with his term ending, he suggested Trump should keep the Democrats' momentum going and ignore the policies of his allies. The president laid out favorable recent economic data but acknowledgedhis rare public regret that he had not been more self-promotional in advertising the financial support provided by his administration as the country emerged from the pandemic. “I signed the American Rescue Plan, the most significant economic recovery package in our history, and also learned something from Donald Trump,” Biden said at the Washington-based think tank. "He signed checks for people for 7,400 bucks ... and I didn't. Stupid." The decision by the former reality TV star and real estate developer to add his name to the checks sent by the U.S. Treasury to millions of Americans struggling during the coronavirus marked the first time a president’s name appeared on any IRS payments. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris , who replaced him as the Democratic nominee , largely failed to convince the American public of the strength of the economy. The addition of 16 million jobs, funding for infrastructure, new factories and investments in renewable energy were not enough to overcome public exhaustion over inflation, which spiked in 2022 and left many households coping with elevated grocery, gasoline and housing costs.
