High Point defeats Pfeiffer 81-50CALGARY, Alberta – Minnesota Wild goalie Marc-Andre Fleury bounded down the tunnel and onto the ice for his 1,000th NHL start and what was presumably the final start of his career in the home rink of the Edmonton Oilers — a team he’d beaten 16 times previously in his career. ADVERTISEMENT He corralled one of the dozens of pucks strewn around the ice and fired toward the cage he would soon be guarding. But his attempt at an empty-net goal was foiled when the puck he had shot hit another puck at the top of the crease and both slid to the corners of the rink. It was just the first thing that would go wrong for the guy teammates lovingly call “Flower” on this night. Less than 30 seconds into the game, he swung at a puck bouncing in his direction all the way from the red line. He missed, and the Oilers led 1-0 on a fluke that had the Rogers Place crowd roaring and smiling. After the initial shock wore off, Fleury was smiling too. “I haven’t played in so long, I wanted to do well and help the team, and at the beginning to let that one in, I was mad for a little bit and then I just laughed. It was so stupid,” he said following Minnesota’s 5-3 win, which gave him a 4-0-1 record for the season. “The guys came by and they gave me a tap, and they laughed and kind of made it a little lighter. And they battled well, nobody sat back.” ADVERTISEMENT Just under 60 minutes of game time later, Flower was the one grinning in the Wild locker room as Minnesota won its ninth road game in a dozen opportunities. Fleury finished with 28 saves, and the other two Edmonton goals both went off the skates of Wild defenders. In the first period, he made a sprawling poke-check save to thwart Oilers star Connor McDavid’s rush to the net that had the Edmonton crowd primed to explode again. It was the 1,030th appearance in an NHL game for Fleury, moving him past Patrick Roy into third in the NHL record books for most games played by a goalie. He will turn 40 on Thanksgiving Day and has been in the league since 2003, after the Penguins made him the first-overall pick in that summer’s draft. But with Filip Gustavsson off to a fantastic start as the Wild’s mainstay in the crease, and Jesper Wallstedt waiting in the wings (in Iowa) presumably as the franchise’s goalie of the future, Fleury finds himself in a new role: backup goalie. Perhaps the only time his ever-present smile seemed forced following the win in Edmonton was when Fleury pointed out, on two occasions, that it was his first start in three weeks, since a win at San Jose on Nov. 7. ADVERTISEMENT Minnesota coach John Hynes reiterated on Friday afternoon that there was, for a brief moment, a thought that the Wild would carry three goalies — Gustavsson, Fleury and Wallstedt — for a time in October, meaning there would be two backups, or a rotation plus a third stringer. It didn’t work out that way. “Gus and Flower played well. Wally played well. But based on contracts and things like that and where everyone’s at in their career, Wally went down and played (in Iowa) and he’s doing a good job now and has found his game,” Hynes said. “But Flower’s playing really well and Gus is playing really well. So, it hasn’t been that he’s...the understudy. It’s just, here’s what we need to do everyday and then we’ll try to let you know when we’re going to start. Sometimes, it might be in advance. Sometimes, it might be a little closer to the game.” Fleury has made it clear that this will be the final season of his career, so like a rare flower that only blooms once in a while, seeing one of his remaining starts is worth seeking out. Of course, with the Wild defying expectations, the team’s fanbase is clearly hoping this flower keeps blooming well into May or even June. POCATELLO - The West Side football program continues to move up the historical ranks. It became just the third team in Idaho history to win five state championships in six years following a 27-6 win over Declo in the 3A State Final Friday night at the ICCU Dome. The Pirates (11-1) joined Sugar-Salem (2023) and Snake River (2000) as the only other ones to do so. They also moved into a tie with Snake River for the second-most state title in Idaho history with No. 10. Highland has the most with 12. West Side got some payback in a rematch of last year’s state title game, as well. Declo (10-2) handed the Pirates their only loss in a road encounter back on Sept. 27. The Hornets won 6-0 that day. It was the first time West Side had been shut out in 19 years. But the Pirates made sure that didn’t happen again. A goal line stand midway through the second quarter jumpstarted a 20-0 run over the next two quarters. The Hornets had a 1st and goal at the West Side 8-yard line. A delay of game and a combined sack by Raef Graves, Jaxxon Bastian and Jarrett Anger knocked them all the way back to the 21, though. So they had to settle for a 38-yard field goal from Bode Brackenbury that was no good. The Pirates capitalized with a 5-minute, 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive that was capped by a 12-yard touchdown pass from Jaden Fuller to Bryson McDaniel with just one minute and 16 seconds remaining in the first half. Drake Sage and older brother Crew Sage extended the lead to 20-0 on touchdown runs of 66 and 1 yards, in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. Declo’s Gavin Rasmussen did take a kickoff 90 yards to the house to cut into the lead at 20-7 with 10:37 to go in the game, but Crew shut down any notion of a comeback. He scored his second touchdown of the game on a 58-yard run with 4:46 left that put the game away for good. Crew finished with a game-high 118 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. Drake added 85 yards and the score on just six carries. For a more in-depth story and reaction from West Side head coach Tyson Moser and players, check idahostatejournal.com .Joseph P. Williams Sept 8, 1927 - Nov 8, 2024 WWII Veteran Joe Williams passed away in his home in El Dorado Hills at the age of 97. Born in Detroit, MI., his parents immigrated from Poland, entering through Ellis Island, their names changing from Wilinski to Williams. A proud World War 2 Navy Veteran, Joe served on the aircraft carrier USS Roosevelt. He visited many parts of the world, and was honorably discharged with a Victory Medal. After college he entered the emerging new world of technology and and became an expert in the beginning stages of computer development. Joe was still a computer expert at 97. He was flown as a consultant around the country from New York, Chicago to Seattle. He met his first wife, Helen in Los Angles. They moved to El Dorado County in 1970 where they raised four children. Although he worked many long hours, he always found time for summer vacations that the family remembers as fun-filled adventures; especially boating on California Lakes and trips across the country. Joe built his home on Hollow Oak Drive 55 years ago, overlooking Folsom and Sacramento, with views of the costal range. It is still and will be the family and friends gathering place. He was known for his dry sense of humor, open mind and his extraordinary kindness. Joe Williams is survived by his wife, Dorothy-Ingram Williams; his daughter, Carlen Vincent of Cameron Park; his son, Jeffrey Ellsworth of Placerville; his sister, Irene Varney of Florida; his grandson, Ryan Gibson of Cameron Park; great granddaughter, Kyndell Turpen of Cameron Park; son, Grant Ingram of Somerset; grandson, Maxwell Ingram of Cameron Park; and beloved extended family. He will be missed and remembered by countless friends of all ages, In lieu of contributions, please give to your favorite charity; but Joe would be pleased if you took an hour with your loved one, perhaps pour a glass of wine and made a toast to the heavens.
El Dorado County supervisors voted unanimously to appoint Amanda Earnshaw as the interim director of the county’s Information Technologies Division at their Dec. 10 board meeting. The appointment moves Earnshaw up from her prior role as assistant director. She replaces former Director Tonya DiGiorno. The board unanimously voted to dismiss Digiorno, who was hired in December 2019, in closed session during a special meeting Nov. 15. Earnshaw will remain in her new position until a permanent director is appointed. The interim director job at Step 2 of the salary range pays $88.26 per hour. The agreement notes Earnshaw can be “terminated earlier by subsequent action of the Board of Supervisors,” according to the recommendation made by Human Resources.None
LIMERICK Twenty Thirty (LTT) and the Technological University of The Shannon (TUS) have agreed a memorandum of understanding on the development of the 10-acre Cleeves Riverside Quarter. The new plan would see up to 1,700 students, student accommodation and college lecture spaces added to the development. In total, some 500 accommodation units will be in the overall development, with almost half of them student accommodation. LTT, a property development company established as a special purpose vehicle of Limerick City and County Council to plan and develop key strategic sites in Limerick City and County, has committed with TUS, which operates seven campuses throughout Ireland’s Mid-West and Midlands region, to explore the potential development of a higher education campus and related ancillary support service buildings, including student accommodation, at the site. Designs are already complete for the residential elements and public realm, and with the new addition of the university campus, this will complement the scheme, delivering a new neighbourhood for Limerick where people can live, learn, work and grow up in. The TUS element, which will be subject to funding from the Higher Education Authority (HEA) and other sources, is centred on the Cleeves Riverside Quarter Flaxmill Site in Limerick, one of the most historic industrial sites in the city. The plan is to transform the LTT owned site into a dynamic project that will become a new heartbeat for Limerick. LTT will in 2025 submit the first of its two phased planning application for the site, located on O’Callaghan Strand/North Circular Road. Phase 1 will include public realm, housing and heritage works, with Phase 2 to include the LTT-TUS partnership. Following the successful delivery of the masterplan, the design teams have already been working together on the project, which would see up to 1,700 students located on the site. In total, some 500 accommodation units will be in the overall development, with almost half of them student accommodation. Conn Murray, chairman of LTT said, “Our mandate is to be an enabler of economic growth in Limerick by developing ourselves or partnering with other developers to deliver key strategic sites that can act as catalysts for economic growth. This partnership with TUS, will be a brilliant proof point of what we are seeking to do. It will bring over 1,700 students into the city centre, which will help with the transformation of the city into one of the most vibrant urban centres in Ireland. TUS is a perfect partner for us on this and we look forward to working with them on this transformational project for Limerick.” TUS president Professor Vincent Cunnane, “The mission of TUS is to be a catalyst for sustainable change through education and research that transforms lives, our region, and the world beyond. Our participation in the Cleeves Riverside Quarter project is very much in line with this mission and our continued expansion. LTT is a fitting partner for us as we have shared goals, and while there is much to do to realise this Cleeves Riverside Quarter project, we are committed to and passionate about its potential to deliver for Limerick, the Midwest region and beyond.” Among the key elements of the masterplan for the site are the 500 residential units, workspaces, a waterfront office tower a vibrant, connected Public Realm that will connect seamlessly across campus well as linking the Cleeves Riverside Quarter to the city. The 10 acre Cleeves Riverside Quarter is one of Limerick’s most recognisable sites, synonymous for its 142ft red-bricked chimney stack, which remains the emblem for what was one of Ireland’s largest industrial sites of the 19th century, designed and built for up to 6,000 workers. It was home to the famous Cleeves Toffee and the Condensed Milk Company, which had 3,000 employees on its payroll and sourced its raw material from 3,000 farmers across Ireland.Video Live Streaming Software Market 2024: A Decade of Phenomenal Growth Ahead 12-20-2024 07:19 PM CET | Business, Economy, Finances, Banking & Insurance Press release from: Prudent Markets Video Live Streaming Software Market The Video Live Streaming Software Market 2024-2023 report provides a comprehensive analysis of Types (Transcoding and Processing, Video Management, Video Delivery and Distribution, Video Analytics, Video Security, Others), Application (Broadcasters, Operators, and Media, BFSI, Education, Healthcare, Government, Others), Analysis of Industry Trends, Growth, and Opportunities, R&D landscape, Data security and privacy concerns Risk Analysis, Pipeline Products, Assumptions, Research Timelines, Secondary Research and Primary Research, Key Insights from Industry Experts, Regional Outlook and Forecast, 2024-2032. Mutual of America Capital Management LLC Reduces Holdings in Avnet, Inc. (NASDAQ:AVT)After a sterling regular season, Battle Mountain’s 2024 volleyball campaign came to a close at the 4A state tournament last weekend in Denver. The Huskies — who walked into Denver Coliseum as the No. 4 seed, boasting a 23-1 mark — lost to No. 12 Mead 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 in the first round and then fell to No. 11 Palmer Ridge 25-18, 26-24, 25-16 in the elimination bracket on day 2. No. 1 Thompson Valley swept No. 8 Lutheran to capture the state title. “In retrospect, having the opportunity to play on the state floor at the Coliseum and knowing you are amongst an elite group of teams to have earned that right feels great,” head coach Scott Graves stated in an email after the tournament. “From a coach’s perspective, you’ll always wonder how you could have changed the outcome by changing something along the way. Bottom line: I’m proud of this team! Proud of what they accomplished and proud of the tough journey they endured and years of training to get them there.” The Huskies won the first 20 games of the season before falling to Palisade in a best-of-three tournament match on Nov. 2. Throughout the win streak , they developed a reputation for clutch composure and dramatic five-set victories — especially against key Western Slope rivals. Two days after defeating Glenwood Springs 3-2 on Oct. 1, the Huskies rallied for a reverse sweep against Eagle Valley, taking the last set 19-17. After winning the region tournament on Nov. 12, Battle Mountain’s veterans looked back on the single blemish as a necessary wake up call. “Honestly I think we needed that,” Tyler Heimerl said after the 3-1 win over Standley Lake, which clinched the team’s first state berth in 10 years. “We needed to see top-level teams. Going into regionals, nothing was promised.” “That showed us that we can’t just be given something,” added Gracie Halminksi, who was selected to play in the all-state game this Sunday. While Graves saw his team exhibit some nerves in the first state match, he said in general, they handled the environment and experience well. “While we didn’t win, we put up a good fight in both matches but just couldn’t seem to get firing on all cylinders at once,” he added. The Huskies led 24-23 in the second set against Palmer Ridge — the defending state champions — but couldn’t close the deal. “I think we win that set, we win the match in four,” Graves continued. “Though we lost in three sets, it still felt good hanging with the former state champions.” The Huskies graduate five seniors from the roster in Heimerl, Halminski, Kylah Romer, Izzy Zastrow and Presley Walters. Graves, who has known most of them for many years, said they brought a “mix of talent and leadership” to the program. “It has been a pleasure to work with them and watch their skills grow,” he added. “I have no doubt that all five of them will go on to do great things.” Battle Mountain also brings back a talented core with significant varsity experience. Libero Evie Steinberg and outside hitter Lela Goehring are just sophomores and setter Keena Shikverg and all-around playmaker Cynthia Orona are juniors. “I’m very excited about the future of the Battle Mountain volleyball program,” Graves said. “There is a bunch of talent throughout the levels. The younger athletes got to see what hard work and determination can mean and that is always a good lesson for the next group coming in. The future is bright.”and both recently could be indicative of a wider scheme targeting professional athletes, prompting the NFL to issue a security alert to teams and the players' union, .
