Ludhiana: With BJP preferring new faces in the list of 93 candidates it released on Tuesday night for the MC elections on Dec 21, disgruntled leaders of the saffron party who did not get a chance started looking for alternative parties on Thursday. Some of them had even started planning to contest as independent candidates. BJP did not give the tickets to many ex-councillors who joined the party recently, while some were denied ticket to settle core workers who had been working hard for long. The party is contesting from all 95 seats of Ludhiana MC for the first time. That is why it took the party long to finalise names. Senior most ex-councillor Sunita Rani got the ticket from Ward 88, while party worker Sunil Moudgil was successful in getting the ticket from Ward 62. Vishal Batra, who joined the saffron party recently, was overlooked. Throughout Wednesday, there was speculation of Batra joining another party. The party also did not give a ticket to ex-councillor Parvinder Lapran’s wife from Ward 51. Instead, BJP picked a Hindu face in Neeru Sharma. Lapran had joined saffron party before Lok Sabha elections as he is close to Union minister of state Ravneet Singh Bittu. Despite this, he did not get the ticket. Now, Lapran is planning to field his wife as an independent candidate. Ex-councillor and senior leader Davinder Jaggi, who has been given the ticket from Ward 82, had sought it from Ward 83. He has decided to leave the party and contest as an independent because he has no base in Ward 82. Some other ex-councillors and leaders have also announced to go independent. As described in Nano Letters , their findings provide a new pathway for creating therapeutics for cancer and heart disease and expanding the field of tissue engineering. "Every cell is responsive to pH," explains Jinglei Ping, associate professor of mechanical and industrial engineering at UMass Amherst and corresponding author of the study. "The behavior and functions of cells are impacted heavily by pH. Some cells lose viability when the pH has a certain level and for some cells, the pH can change their physiological properties." Previous work has demonstrated that changes of pH as small as 0.1 pH units can have physiologically significant effects on cells. However, studying the direct impact of pH changes has been challenging because existing methods of changing the cellular environment are slow and rely on diffusion. "How a specific cell responds to the pH variation in real-time -- that is unknown," says Ping. It has been established that pH can be manipulated with a microelectrode, providing the initial means for the design, but doing this while also measuring the change in pH introduced a new hurdle: The graphene transistor to measure the pH is also sensitive to the current from the pH-modulating microelectrode. "So, the current you measure is not specific to pH," says Ping. This is where Ping took inspiration from fighter aircraft machine gun and propeller synchronization. In a fighter aircraft, machine guns are located behind the propeller. The aircraft needs to shoot bullets without hitting its own propeller. The solution is that machine guns are synchronized with the propeller so that the fast-firing guns only shoot when aligned with an opening between the slower-moving propeller blades. Ping's team created a similar gap by briefly turning off the current that changes the pH. This milliseconds-long gap is large enough for the transistor to make an accurate recording of pH without the interference of current from the microelectrode, but small enough that the pH does not have time to revert to normal. Their device was able to manipulate pH with a resolution of 0.1 pH units, far exceeding previous electrode-based attempts that only reached 0.6 pH units. They tested their device on bacteria and heart cells. They found that the movement of bacteria (Bacillus subtilis) decreases as the environment becomes more basic. Compared to conventional methods, the new method was more efficient. It required a single sample and captured nine data points in about nine minutes, while the conventional method took two hours to collect 13 data points, each requiring its own sample. They also found that when the pH of the environment is reduced from neutral (7) to acidic (about 4), cardiomyocytes doubled their heartbeat frequency, highlighting the device's potential to advance scientific understanding of the relationship between metabolic acidosis (when the body is too acidic) and tachycardia (a condition where the heart beats too fast), as well as to address important questions in cardiology therapeutics. "It opens the doors and it solves a technical question, and it brings out a lot of what-if questions to scientists," says Ping. "I will not say that we have addressed any of those long-term questions, but we provide a tool to address them." Ping envisions that this technology can be applied to bioelectronics, tissue engineering, tumor therapy and regenerative medicine. His excitement lasted for only a short time. "Until I realized it was on Wednesday," Mahomes said Monday. Plenty of sore bodies will take the field Wednesday when the Chiefs (14-1) visit the Pittsburgh Steelers (10-5) in what will be the third game in 11 days for both teams. Both squads just played on Saturday. The Chiefs posted a 27-19 home win over the Houston Texans and the Steelers fell 34-17 to the host Baltimore Ravens. "You're not going to feel great," Mahomes said of the short week. "That's kind of just what it is. You don't make excuses in this league. You go out and play football, and you fight until the very end, and you try to get a win at the end of the day. "You're motivated to play a great football team, to play in Pittsburgh in a great environment, a great stadium. It'll be rocking playing on Christmas, so everybody's going to be watching." If Kansas City wins Wednesday, it clinches the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. The Chiefs have 14 victories for the third time in the past five seasons. The franchise has never won 15 games in a season. Kansas City hasn't committed a single turnover during its five-game winning streak. Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson isn't fond of hearing "turnover" after he made two big mistakes in Saturday's loss to the Ravens. Wilson lost a fumble after a 19-yard gain to the Baltimore 4-yard line in the second quarter and later was intercepted by Marlon Humphrey, who returned it 37 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Wilson called it "unacceptable" and now has his focus on making amends against Kansas City. "I don't think there's enough time to really sulk or worry or fear," Wilson said. " ...
