betboom streamers battle
betboom streamers battle It is an ambitious social experiment of our moment in history — one that experts say could accomplish something that parents, schools and other governments have attempted with varying degrees of success: keeping kids off social media until they turn 16. Australia’s new law, approved by its Parliament last week, is an attempt to swim against many tides of modern life — formidable forces like technology, marketing, globalization and, of course, the iron will of a teenager. And like efforts of the past to protect kids from things that parents believe they’re not ready for, the nation’s move is both ambitious and not exactly simple, particularly in a world where young people are often shaped, defined and judged by the online company they keep. The ban won’t go into effect for another year. But how will Australia be able to enforce it? That’s not clear, nor will it be easy. TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram have become so ingrained in young people’s lives that going cold turkey will be difficult. Other questions loom. Does the ban limit kids’ free expression and — especially for those in vulnerable groups — isolate them and curtail their opportunity to connect with members of their community? And how will social sites verify people’s ages, anyway? Can’t kids just get around such technicalities, as they so often do? Related Story: Platforms Will Be Held Liable The law will make platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and Instagram liable for fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars ($33 million) for systemic failures to prevent children younger than 16 from holding accounts. “It’s clear that social media companies have to be held accountable, which is what Australia is trying to do,” said Jim Steyer, president and CEO of the nonprofit Common Sense Media. Leaders and parents in countries around the world are watching Australia’s policy closely as many seek to protect young kids from the internet’s dangerous corners — and, not incidentally, from each other. Most nations have taken different routes, from parental consent requirements to minimum age limits. Many child safety experts, parents and even teens who have waited to get on social media consider Australia’s move a positive step. They say there’s ample reason to ensure that children wait. “What’s most important for kids, just like adults, is real human connection. Less time alone on the screen means more time to connect, not less,” said Julie Scelfo, the founder of Mothers Against Media Addiction, or MAMA, a grassroots group of parents aimed at combatting the harms of social media to children. “I’m confident we can support our kids in interacting in any number of ways aside from sharing the latest meme.” The harms to children from social media have been well documented in the two decades since Facebook’s launch ushered in a new era in how the world communicates. Kids who spend more time on social media, especially as tweens or young teenagers, are more likely to experience depression and anxiety, according to multiple studies — though it is not yet clear if there is a causal relationship. What’s more, many are exposed to content that is not appropriate for their age, including pornography and violence, as well as social pressures about body image and makeup. They also face bullying, sexual harassment and unwanted advances from their peers as well as adult strangers. Because their brains are not fully developed, teenagers, especially younger ones the law is focused on, are also more affected by social comparisons than adults, so even happy posts from friends can send them into a negative spiral. What Unintended Harms Could Be Caused? Many major initiatives, particularly those aimed at social engineering, can produce side effects — often unintended. Could that happen here? What, if anything, do kids stand to lose by separating kids and the networks in which they participate? Paul Taske, associate director of litigation at the tech lobbying group NetChoice, says he considers the ban “one of the most extreme violations of free speech on the world stage today” even as he expressed relief that the First Amendment prevents such law in the United States “These restrictions would create a massive cultural shift,” Taske said. “Not only is the Australian government preventing young people from engaging with issues they’re passionate about, but they’re also doing so even if their parents are ok with them using digital services,” he said. “Parents know their children and their needs the best, and they should be making these decisions for their families — not big government. That kind of forcible control over families inevitably will have downstream cultural impacts.” David Inserra, a fellow for Free Expression and Technology, Cato Institute, called the bill “about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike” in a recent blog post. While Australia’s law doesn’t require “hard verification” such as an uploaded ID, he said, it calls for effective “age assurance.” He said no verification system can ensure accuracy while also protecting privacy and not impacting adults in the process. Privacy advocates have also raised concerns about the law’s effect on online anonymity, a cornerstone of online communications — and something that can protect teens on social platforms. “Whether it be religious minorities and dissidents, LGBTQ youth, those in abusive situations, whistleblowers, or countless other speakers in tricky situations, anonymous speech is a critical tool to safely challenge authority and express controversial opinions,” Inserra said. A spot check of kids at one mall in the Australian city of Brisbane on Wednesday didn’t turn up a great deal of worry, though. “Social media is still important because you get to talk to people, but I think it’s still good that they’re like limiting it,” said Swan Son, a 13-year-old student at Brisbane State High School. She said she has had limited exposure to social media and wouldn’t really miss it for a couple of years. Her parents already enforce a daily one-hour limit. And as for her friends? “I see them at school every day, so I think I’ll be fine.” Conor Negric, 16, said he felt he’d dodged a bullet because of his age. Still, he considers the law reasonable. “I think 16 is fine. Some kids, I know some kids like 10 who’re on Instagram, Snapchat. I only got Instagram when I was 14.” His mom, Sive Negric, who has two teenage sons, said she was happy for her boys to avoid exposure to social media too early: “That aspect of the internet, it’s a bit `meanland.'” Related Story: Other Countries Are Trying to Figure It Out, Too Parents in Britain and across Europe earlier this year organized on platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram to promise not to buy smartphones for children younger than 12 or 13. This approach costs almost no money and requires no government enforcement. In the United States, some parents are keeping kids off social media either informally or as part of an organized campaign such as Wait Until 8th, a group that helps parents delay kids’ access to social media and phones. This fall, Norway announced plans to ban kids under 15 from using social media, while France is testing a smartphone ban for kids under 15 in a limited number of schools — a policy that could be rolled out nationwide if successful. U.S. lawmakers have held multiple congressional hearings — most recently in January — on child online safety. Still, the last federal law aimed at protecting children online was enacted in 1998, six years before Facebook’s founding. In July, the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly passed legislation designed to protect children from dangerous online content, pushing forward with what would be the first major effort by Congress in decades to hold tech companies more accountable. But the Kids Online Safety Act has since stalled in the House. Related Story: While several states have passed laws requiring age verification, those are stuck in court. Utah became the first state to pass laws regulating children’s social media use in 2023. In September, a judge issued the preliminary injunction against the law, which would have required social media companies to verify the ages of users, apply privacy settings and limit some features. NetChoice has also obtained injunctions temporarily halting similar laws in several other states. And last May, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said there is insufficient evidence to show social media is safe for kids. He urged policymakers to treat social media like car seats, baby formula, medication and other products children use. “Why should social media products be any different? Scelfo said. “Parents cannot possibly bear the entire responsibility of keeping children safe online, because the problems are baked into the design of the products.”

Trans Golfer Says LPGA Gender-Eligibility Rule 'Part of the Reason' for High Trans Suicide RateNEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball switched a pair of series involving the Tampa Bay Rays to the first two months of the season in an attempt to avoid summer rain at open-air Steinbrenner Field, their temporary home following damage to Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay is scheduled to play 19 of its first 22 games at home and 37 of 54 through May 28, then play 64 of its last 108 games on the road. The Rays are home for eight games each in July and August. A series scheduled at the Los Angeles Angels from April 7-9 will instead be played at Tampa, Florida, from April 8-10, MLB said Monday. The second series between the teams will be played at Anaheim, California, from Aug. 4-6 instead of at St. Petersburg, Florida, from Aug. 5-7. Minnesota's first series against the Rays will be played at Steinbrenner Field from May 26-28 and the Twins' second will be at Target Field in Minneapolis from July 4-6. Tampa Bay heads into the All-Star break with a 10-game trip to Minnesota, Detroit and Boston, and has a 12-game trip to the Angels, Seattle, Oakland and San Francisco from Aug. 4-17. Tropicana Field, the Rays’ home since the team started play in 1998, was heavily damaged by Hurricane Milton on Oct. 9 , with most of its fabric roof shredded. The Rays cannot return to the Trop until 2026 at the earliest, if at all. Tampa's average monthly rainfall from 1991 to 2020 was 2.25 inches in April and 2.60 in May , according to the National Weather Service, then rose to 7.37 in June , 7.75 in July and 9.03 in August before falling to 6.09 in September . The Class A Tampa Tarpons, the usual team at Steinbrenner Field, had six home postponements, two cancellations and four suspended games this year from June 21 through their season finale on Sept. 8. The Rays are now scheduled to play their first six games at home against Colorado and Pittsburgh, go to Texas for a three-game series, then return for a 13-game homestand against the Angels, Atlanta, Boston and the New York Yankees. The Tarpons will play their home games on a back field. AP MLB: https://apnews.com/Mark Wahlberg’s decades-long dedication to his body is well known. Wahlberg also flipped a personal residence in Vegas, which, according to People, he purchased for $14.5 million to enable his children to attend school after leaving Los Angeles and sold it for $16.6 million barely a year later, moving into another Vegas home. Wahlberg also invested in Aquahydrate, a brand of electrolyte water, with the currently embattled Sean “Diddy” Combs in 2019. According to Forbes, they both invested $20 million. They’re the . Is that your speed? The name of Canada’s new WNBA team was announced today on X and people on that platform reacted quickly. Some commenters to the post suggested the name sounds nice, but lacks a ‘wow’ factor. User @KBTHEBOSS_ said “Doesn’t sound bad, but lacks identity and inspiration, including the branding.” That opinion seemed to resonate with other users, like @Angelle007, who said “I’ll be supporting but not a fan of this name/logo or brand. Nothing about it reflects Toronto IMO.” Others, like @backhandoftruth, seemed flatly unimpressed: “They could have done better than this. It’s not bad just bland.” Some users were harsher, even questioning if the team officials listened to the name suggestions they asked the public to . User @jrwarbs said, “What a horrible name ... Y’all could have done so much better, we gave so much feedback and to get this??” The team’s logo and colours were also unveiled, and several commenters found them a letdown. User @natssssart replied with “Hey so there’s already 3 (WNBA) purple teams and this is the fourth” and @LauraBusta said, “Also this colour palate doesn’t pop. Is it 1982?” Colour aside, several X users found the logo design reminiscent of the Indiana Pacers’ emblem. User @DLoThaReal said, “Hopefully this grows on me but it gives me Pacers vibes.” Another user, @Tom21378062, found the name and logo uninspired after so many : “Literally so many other suggestions that were better. Also the logo looks like a rip off Pacers one (just) saying.” Tweets saying the designed logo highly resembled the Pacers logo can be seen in the comment section. Team president Teresa Resch said in an interview that the colours were “a modern take on a very familiar Canadian colour palate” and that the name resembled control while playing basketball. “Tempo is not about going fast or slow, it’s about control. And truly, as Canadians, we’re not playing your game, we’re defining ours through that control,” said Resch. The team plans to debut in 2026. Information can be found on X at @ or on the team .

Kylan Darnell/Instagram Kylan and Izzy Darnell responded to TikTok commenters who allege their luxury Christmas hauls included fake designer items. Days after posting videos on Christmas Day of their luxury presents from their parents and receiving comments accusing their designer bags of being fake, the sisters reacted to the commenters in new videos. “Did you get this at Walmart? I have the same exact bag!” one person wrote on a video posted by Izzy, 18, on Dec. 25, as other people questioned the gifts’ authenticity and demanded to see receipts. On Friday, Dec. 27, Izzy shared a nearly three-minute reaction video. “Somehow you guys are hating so hard you’re trying to make me hate my Christmas gifts from my parents that worked hard to buy me those gifts. ... It’s not me, it’s you. I’m sorry, but for people on this app to be trying to bully a teenager into hating what their parents bought for them is wild,” Izzy said, before exclaiming in a singing voice, “Y’all are insane.” Related: In a now-deleted video that , Kylan, 20, seemingly admitted to some of the gifts being fake. “Some of my stuff that’s designer is real and some of my stuff is fake. I thought that was, like, an everybody thing,” Kylan explained, adding, “I didn't mean to offend anybody, but whenever my mom hands me a Christmas present, I was raised to be grateful for whatever I got.“ Then, on Saturday, Dec. 28, Izzy teamed up with Kylan to show off a second haul of gifts that resulted from all the hate on social media. “Since everyone on here is a D1 hater, you guys made my mom and dad feel so bad over our Christmas presents,” Izzy said. Related: Izzy continued, “So they went and bought us all new — and, not only did they buy the same purses again so we can have more, so we have real and fake. Receipt? Give them the receipt.” That’s when Kylan held her phone up to the camera to share what appeared to be a legit digital receipt from the online store . “Not only did we get those purses — show them the t------s,” Izzy said to her sister, who then drew attention to her chest and said, “We got boobs!” “And we got a nose,” Izzy said about her nose job. “So, silence yourselves.” “This is real, y’all. We’d never share a receipt or anything like that, because we’re not like that, and don’t believe in that,” Kylan then said “But y’all asked for it!” Izzy exclaimed. “The justice has been served.” The sisters then opened three new gifts, which included a Louis Vuitton bag and a Chanel bag from FRWD. At the end of the video, the sisters thanked critics and fans. “This is our Christmas haul, and we love you all so much,” Kylan concluded. “We hope you all had the most amazing holiday season, and thank you for clocking us, because we wouldn’t be here without you.” Read the original article onLas Vegas quarterback Gardner Minshew is out for the season due to a broken collarbone, head coach Antonio Pierce confirmed on Monday, leaving the Raiders with a short week to determine their starter. Minshew suffered the injury when he was sacked and landed on his left shoulder late in the fourth quarter of Las Vegas' 29-19 home loss to the Denver Broncos. Former starter Aidan O'Connell, who was sidelined by a thumb injury in Week 7, could return off injured reserve in time for the Raiders (2-9) to face the two-time reigning Super Bowl champion Chiefs (10-1) on Friday in Kansas City. "We'll see if Aidan is good to go," Pierce said. "He's been ramping up." O'Connell entered the 21-day practice window on Monday as the Raiders determine when to activate him. "Seeing him able to grip the ball comfortable, hopefully, no pain there, and just being able to be efficient," Pierce said. "To put a player out there that's hurting or injured still, that's not to the benefit of the player or our team." O'Connell, 26, has played in four games this season, starting two (both losses). He is 52 of 82 (63.4 percent) for 455 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. As a rookie last season, O'Connell started 10 of 11 games, going 5-5, and completed 213 of 343 passes (62.1 percent) for 2,218 yards, 12 TDs and seven interceptions. The Raiders selected O'Connell in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. "Obviously at the quarterback position, you've got to be smart," Pierce said. "I think with Aidan, his future's much brighter looking ahead. ... I'll have to really rely on our doctors and medical staff." Desmond Ridder replaced Minshew and went 5 of 10 for 64 yards. Ridder, 25, has appeared in three games this season for Las Vegas and is 16 of 26 (61.5 percent) for 138 yards and one TD. Ridder played the previous two seasons for the Atlanta Falcons, who selected him in the third round of the 2022 draft. For his career, he is 338 of 529 (63.9 percent) for 3,682 yards, 15 TDs and 12 interceptions in 22 games (17 starts, 8-9 record). Minshew, 28, completed 25 of 42 passes for 230 yards with one touchdown and one interception against the Broncos. He finished his first season with the Raiders with 2,013 yards, nine TDs and 10 picks on 66.3 percent passing. He joined the Raiders in free agency after stints in Jacksonville (2019-20), Philadelphia (2021-22) and Indianapolis (2023) and won the starting job in camp. But he was benched multiple times for O'Connell as the Raiders struggled as a team. --Field Level Media

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum (HMFF) in Tel Aviv is a civil, volunteer-based organisation focused on the safe return of all hostages held by the terrorist organisation Hamas. Through all available channels the HMFF will not rest until they are all back home. A small group of Sydney women have recently joined together to raise funds for the HMFF. Entrepreneurs Jo Bloch and Nicky Jackson are two of the Sydney group who worked closely with Israeli Itay Shenberger from the HMFF network to help create a new project, Bring Back the Light Australia “This upcoming holiday of Chanukah, we will light an extra candle for the hostages’ return, placing it beside the menorah,” explained Shenberger. “For over a year now, we have all carried a flame of hope in our hearts, yearning for the return of our dearest loved ones. “We are doing everything we can to keep that flame burning at its brightest. “Now, we call on the Jewish communities in Australia to help banish the darkness. “This Chanukah let us spread light and advocate for their return through special candleholders.” The HMFF had candle holders especially created in Israel from the same material as the dog tags worn by IDF soldiers. Each candle holder is supplied with eight yellow candles, one for each night of Chanukah, for a donation of $50. “Help us spread the light, when you put a match to the candles this Chanukah, by praying for the safe return of our hostages and by sharing your images on social media tagged with #BringBackTheLight #BringThemHomeNow.” Shenberger added. Every cent raised from sales will be donated to the HMFF in Israel, helping to provide material support to released hostages and families of hostages. “This will increase awareness and show the world that we stand with the hostages and their families, bringing light to their darkness and strengthening the global call for their release. “Our group has committed to buying 1000 candle packs and we are hoping to raise $50,000.” Shenberger said. “By making a $50 tax deductible donation to the Chai Charitable Foundation (a registered charity) you will receive one candle pack from the Hostage Forum together with an email listing information on various pick-up points across Sydney and Melbourne,” he added.

American Airlines Stock Breaks Through Delays. Don't Expect It To Soar.

Vanderbilt aims to conclude its nonconference schedule with a sixth straight win when it hosts New Orleans on Monday in Nashville, Tenn. Since losing to Drake 81-70 in the Charleston Classic title game on Nov. 24, the Commodores (11-1) have jumped to 37th in the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) ranking. They have won their last five games by a combined 138 points, with 52 of those in a 105-53 rout of The Citadel on Dec. 18. New Orleans (2-10) has a NET ranking of 334 and enters on a six-game skid, two of those coming losses to Southeastern Conference members Texas (98-62) and LSU (86-70). First-year coach Stacy Hollowell's squad fell 86-61 on Saturday at McNeese State, which dropped the Privateers to 0-2 in the Southland Conference. Vanderbilt coach Mark Byington, who is also in his first season, has done an impressive job in overhauling a roster within a program that went 9-23 last year. Byington hit the transfer portal hard and found both star power in Jason Edwards, scoring balance in Devin McGlockton, AJ Hoggard and Tyler Nickel and additional depth via nine newcomers who average at least 15 minutes. Edwards is the SEC's third-leading scorer at 18.9 points per game, while McGlockton (11.8 ppg) Hoggard (10.3) and Nickel (10.0) round out the Commodores' double-digit scorers. Vanderbilt is shooting just 32.7 percent this season from 3-point range but has canned 20 of 41 attempts (48.8 percent) over its last two games. "After practice, a lot of guys continue to get 50 makes in or more after practice, so the reps are just going to show we can all shoot the ball pretty good," guard MJ Collins said. New Orleans has a star of its own in guard James White, who leads the Southland in scoring (19.2) and rebounding (7.9). The Privateers' upset hopes ride on him and freshman MJ Thomas (8.3 ppg, 7.0 rpg), who has averaged 11.4 points in the last five games. White has totaled 12 minutes over two appearances against Vanderbilt in 2022 and 2023 while at Ole Miss. "(White is) a rangy, athletic player with all-conference potential," Hollowell told Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook this summer. This will be New Orleans's ninth straight road game. The Privateers have played just once at home (a Nov. 9 loss to Troy), but will host their next three games after Monday. --Field Level Media
