The re-establishment of the Nigeria Sports Commission has been welcomed by various stakeholders in the nation’s sport. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is upbeat about the new prospects for the sector’s growth, even as he has expressed implicit confidence in the competence and capacity of the NSC leadership, including Shehu Dikko, the Chairman, and Bukola Olapade, the DG, to deliver. In the past few weeks, the duo have been rejigging the direction and framework of our sports to reset, refocus and relaunch the sector as a veritable asset for national development, and with more professional administration and management. As has been revealed by Dikko, “the strategic approach of the Renewed Hope Agenda and shared prosperity aims to establish sports as a vital pillar of Nigeria’s economy and a unifying factor for national development.” The repositioning covers the entire sports eco-system with the target of improving sports infrastructure across the country, eliciting mass participation, greater and more gainful youth engagement, generation of about three million direct, indirect and induced jobs, attainment of about five per cent share in global sports export, the attraction of foreign direct investments and foreign exchange earnings, and provision of an enabling environment for private sector participation and investments to complement government efforts. The target is to steer the sports sector to contribute about three per cent to the National Gross Domestic Product and for our national teams to achieve a more respectable podium finish in international competitions. The strategies include institutional repositioning through the restructuring of the sports sector framework, which already began with the establishment of the NSC and the ongoing upscaling of the Establishing Act to meet global best practices. As an enabler for sustainable growth, the restructuring of the sports federations for greater efficiency and effectiveness; and the deepening of grassroots and school sports to strengthen the sector’s foundation through wider access to sports for the discovery, nurturing, and grooming of elite athletes. The goal is ambitious, bold, and daring. It is taking the road less travelled, but the strategies already outlined by the NSC assure its attainment as they are deliberate and focused. The most critical success factor, perhaps, is the will of the government under the overall vision of the Renewed Hope Agenda to take sports more seriously than before. Related News Ex-Eagles stars, Fagge honour Dikko Nigeria will never return from Olympics empty-handed again - Dikko FG panel indicts AFN in Ofili's Paris Olympics omission President Bola Tinubu, with his natural boldness and vision for the future, has served notice of his willingness, not only by the reclassification of sports as a national asset and critical driver of economic development, national cohesion and image building, but especially also with the deliberate capital allocation of over N78 billion to sports in the 2025 Budget proposal, the highest in about 60 years. The proposed budget is directed at accelerating sports development and growth through the establishment, construction, reconstruction, and revival of various capital and critical sports assets and programs to set the foundation of a robust and virile sports economy in Nigeria. These include the full rehabilitation of the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja, to set the framework for its eventual concession and transformation to a sports city, together with the completion of its 200-room Athletes’ Hostel, abandoned for over 15 years, but which now will be commercialised after its completion to rake in revenue. The reset programme also includes the rehabilitation of various other Federal Government stadiums across the country, the construction of mini sports centres across various communities, the construction and equipping of the High-Performance Centre in Abuja, the rehabilitation and upgrade of the Sports Hospital/Clinic, which would also be commercialised and open to the public, and the development and equipment of a world-class anti-doping laboratory intended to rake in foreign exchange and reverse capital flight, as the nation and most African countries currently take samples overseas for analysis. Also interesting is, in addition to the normal budget line for sporting activities, there is now a specific and separate budget line to take care of preparations for events like the Olympics, commonwealth, African games, World and Continental Championships, the Paralympic and other para-sports competitions, the World Cup and AFCON qualifiers and support for NUGA Games, School Sports and others. Added to this is a deliberate reserve budget line for international competitions in the service-wide vote for the participation of national teams in international competitions. This means that when team Nigeria qualifies for any international event, funding would be drawn from the vote, as against the old fire brigade approach of having to start seeking funds after each qualification. The agenda also includes the provision of funding support for the stabilisation of sports federations, and part of the strategy is the acquisition of sports content from the federations for production, aggregation and monetisation. This will also entail the setting up, equipment and training of personnel for the operation of a sports media production unit. The scope of work is wide, deep and challenging. Still, it is the ultimate game changer we have craved, and it is reassuring that the NSC also understands the need and has plans to recruit and train more hands to cascade its operations across the geographical zones, states and local governments. With President Tinubu having set the agenda and demonstrated willingness, and the vision and direction now clearly articulated by the leadership of the NSC, the next critical success factor is the support of the citizenry, especially the sports and corporate communities, by joining hands in making our bed how we would want to lie on it. Thanksgiving Eve has fully replaced New Years Eve as the biggest bar night of the year. Having reduced my playing schedule, this is the first Thanksgiving Eve in my 50-year musical career that I have had that night open to go out and hear great music. So, the problem is this: with all of these choices, where should I go? Let’s look at the options. The party starts tonight when Uncle Charlie & The Meatballs take the Copper City Brewing Company stage from 7-9. Tired of arguing politics with your drunk uncle? Stay in town and head to the Celtic Harp for Gridley Paige Naked and Scared at 6 p.m.; Piggy Pat’s for Stage Road from 6-9; Smoking Guns Saloon at 7 p.m. for Grit N Grace and Broken Rule; Lukin’s for Remedy at 9; or One Genny for Soul Injection at 9:30 p.m. If you time it right, maybe you can catch all these great bands. There’s no shortage of great music in the valley either, with Don Pinto & Friends at Heelpath Brewery in Frankfort at 6 p.m., Steve Rigo at Ilion Elks lodge from 6-9 , Rocking Rod at Perri’s Pub in Frankfort beginning at 7 p.m., and the Max Scialdone Band at Fratello’s Pizzeria from 8-11 The party returns to Rome on Wednesday with DIGG and BADDOGG at The Snubbing Post, Mark Macri at DeMatteo’s at 6 p.m. and, for those in a tryptophan-induced mellow jazz mood, ZZ Entertainment with an early 4:30 show at Franca’s Wine Room. OK, where to go now? Let’s head west, where the choices are plentiful, including 7 Hamlets with a 5:30 p.m. show from Second Breakfast, Chasing Neon at Vernon Downs at 6 p.m., Before August playing the Verona VFW at 7 p.m., Anthony Consiglio with a 6 p.m. performance at 3 Bastrds Brewing and, finally, The BOMB returns to rock Nothin’ Fancy at 9 p.m. Or maybe you need a slightly longer drive to work off the huge meal or disappointing football scores. Again, there’s plenty to choose from, including Stan Premo Project at the Sandbar Grill in Bernhards Bay (6 p.m.); Nelson Brothers at the Camden American Legion, (7 p.m.); Fish Creek Rodeo at the Cleveland House (6 p.m.) Florence Hotel — Just Thrown Together (7 p.m.) and SGB Party at the Good Life in Camden. (7 p.m.). Also — I told you there was a lot to choose from — Kevin “K-Dogg” Dundon at The Junction in Alder Creek at 6; Whiskey Creek at Matteson Hotel in Cedarville at 8:30pm; Brian Wagner at Meier’s Creek Brewing in Cazenovia at 6 p.m.; and Terry Mojo Johnson at Nick Stoner Inn in Caroga Lake at 5 p.m. Now let’s hear from the people who claim there’s never anything going on around here.SoundHound AI, Inc. In Surveilled ( now streaming on Max ), celeb journalist Ronan Farrow investigates how governments use powerful spyware to hack phones and keep tabs on people. The cynical among us won’t be surprised to hear this. But that cynicism is further fortified by Farrow’s discovery that it’s not just fascist despots enacting this breach of privacy and civil liberties – democratic governments are using the software to monitor their own citizens, among them political dissidents and journalists. Farrow grew interested in the topic after his high-profile exposes of Harvey Weinstein and Leslie Moonves’ resulted in him being surveilled by private investigators who used his phone to track him. Farrow has since published multiple pieces in The New Yorker about this troubling technology, with his 2022 story headlined “How Democracies Spy on Their Citizens” forming the basis of this eye-opening hour-long documentary. SURVEILLED : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT? The Gist: The NSO Group is a cyberintelligence organization based in Israel, and infamous for its software dubbed Pegasus, which allows users remote access to smartphones. The company’s only customers are governments, and both parties claim Pegasus is used solely to combat organized crime and terrorism. The software is credited for being a key component in the arrest of infamous Mexican cartel lord El Chapo – but it also has been linked with the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the hands of Saudi government agents. Pegasus exploits code loopholes in various apps, most famously WhatsApp, which scrambled to patch its security vulnerabilities to combat the spyware, and subsequently sued NSO. The most distressing thing about Pegasus? It can worm its way into phones and not only access its data – photos, web history, etc. – but record audio and video without the user even being aware of it. The documentary follows Farrow throughout 2021 and 2022 as he travels from continent to continent investigating this shady activity. Scrutiny on NSO in the wake of its very public controversies found the company adopting a new philosophy of “transparency,” which meant Farrow was allowed to visit its lavish Tel Aviv headquarters to interview various employees – under the watchful eye of its PR rep, of course. The company opened the doors to the press, “up to a point,” Farrow narrates. He walked away with a variety of assertions that NSO’s vetting process for assuring its government clients use Pegasus responsibly is tight. Take our word for it is the takeaway. Trust us. Of course, Farrow distrusts such assurances and digs deeper. He finds a former NSO employee willing to dish on the company’s questionable ethics as long as his identity remains anonymous. He travels to Toronto, where activists at a group known as Citizen Lab have developed a means of testing phones for traces of Pegasus activity. Farrow then follows that thread to Spain, specifically Barcelona, where Citizen Lab investigator Elies Campo learned that the democratic government has been using Pegasus to spy on activists, journalists and politicians supporting a separatist movement in Catalan. From there, Farrow returns to the U.S. to ask politicians what they’re doing to combat such surveillance tactics, and if they’re using them in any capacity. The answer is complicated of course, but it’s also a big fat yes, although entirely within the civil liberties of the citizenry. Farrow’s takeaway? Take our word for it. Trust us. What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: Kill Chain , The Swamp , After Truth ... all docs, like Surveilled , that we wish didn’t have to exist. Performance Worth Watching: Campo is an underappreciated hero of the movement to combat Pegasus, at great personal sacrifice – we learn that the Spanish government hacked his family members’ phones to keep tabs on him. Memorable Dialogue: Farrow asks Connecticut Rep. Jim Himes if the U.S. government uses Pegasus. The politician says yes, but only so the FBI can be fully informed about how it works so they can better combat it: “The notion that, for the first time in our history, we’re gonna say we’re gonna let all the bad guys have technology that we’re not going to use – that’s a novel concept. And when you really think it through, a little bit of a scary concept.” Sex and Skin: None. Our Take: “A little bit of a scary concept.” Understatement of the year. Another disconcerting truth Farrow underscores in Surveilled ? “You can’t put the tech genie back in the bottle,” a U.S. government official says. In other words, once Pegasus is out there flying around, it can’t be eradicated. Now, if you’re wondering what kind of grim, hopeless conclusion Farrow reaches by the end of the doc, well, here it is: “Our only path toward privacy might be living without our phones.” Loll that notion around in your brain, parse it critically with all the even-handed logic and reason you can muster, consider the context of life in America (and other countries wrangling with political instability, of course) and the conclusion you’ll reach is pithy and obvious: We’re doomed. Sorry to be a bummer. Just reflecting the tone and message of this documentary. But hey, at least we’re better informed about things, right? It’s always better to know things than not know things, I keep telling myself, not sure if I’m lying to myself at least a little bit, and realizing that this is always the silver lining one paints atop bad news. We do get some glimpses into the diligence of serious investigative journalism as we watch Farrow poke and prod and dig and ask difficult questions. It’s not his responsibility to spin things positive or make us feel better. He doesn’t offer a viable solution to the problem of state-sponsored citizen surveillance; let’s face it, asking billions of people to smash their phones with a peen hammer is like asking a crocodile to please let go of your leg, because ow, that hurts. We’re too dependent on the tech, and many of us are all too willing to look the other way, or compromise our civil liberties for the sake of convenience, or be complicit in that look all you want because I never do anything wrong sense. These notions bubble up during the course of Surveilled , alongside a quieter subtextual assertion that we shouldn’t expect allegedly democratic governments to do the right thing for the sake of the greater good, the U.S. included. Consider the words Rep. Himes uses here: “the bad guys.” What a relative term. The U.S. government is certainly considered to be “the bad guys” in other parts of the world, and maybe even within its own borders. Also not particularly reassuring: The Pegasus ordeal puts massive tech conglomerates like Apple and Microsoft on the frontlines of the battle against NSO, since their products are being exploited for nefarious means; on one hand, Big Tech has lots of money and sharklike lawyers at their disposable, but on the other, we trust them as much as the government to do the right thing. All kinds of troublesome information spills out of Surveilled , a documentary that offers reportage so vital, it’s no fun to watch whatsoever. Our Call: For better or worse, we’re more informed about very bad things after watching Surveilled . STREAM IT, then go pour yourself 17 stiff drinks. The study takes into account life expectancy, age dependency, quality of life, safety, healthcare as well as climate index and happiness ranking. Each of these criteria were analysed to calculate the composite score, by which countries are ranked. The data is taken from open reports by the World Health Organization, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and Worldometer. The top ten rankings were: Coming top Japan, with the maximum score of 100, has good healthcare and affordable cost of living. Will Utah State or Boise State forfeit vs. San Jose State in the Mountain West semifinals?STEVENSON, Wash. (AP) — Two Oregon men were found dead in a Washington state forest after they failed to return from a trip to look for Sasquatch, authorities said Saturday. The 59-year-old and 37-year-old appear to have died from exposure, the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office said via Facebook. The weather and the men’s lack of preparedness led the office to draw that conclusion, it said. Sasquatch is a folkloric beast thought by some to roam the forests, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. The two men were found in a heavily wooded area of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, which is about 150 miles (240 kilometers) northeast of Portland. A family member reported them missing around 1 a.m. on Christmas Day after they failed to return from a Christmas Eve outing. Sixty volunteer search-and-rescue personnel helped in the three-day search, including canine, drone and ground teams. The Coast Guard used infrared technology to search from the air. Authorities used camera recordings to locate the vehicle used by the pair off Oklahoma Road near Willard, which is on the southern border of the national forest. To remove this article -
