(AP) — Voters dejected by the presidential election results need to find a way to give back and remain involved, Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton said Saturday as they celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Clinton presidential library. The former president urged audience members in a packed theater to remain engaged and find ways to communicate with those they disagree with despite a divisive political time. The two spoke about a month after former President Donald Trump’s win over Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election. “We’re just passing through, and we all need to just calm down and do something that builds people up instead of tears them down,” Bill Clinton said. Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state who was defeated by Trump in the 2016 election, said she understands the next couple of years are going to be challenging for voters who don’t agree with the decisions being made. “In addition to staying involved and staying aware, it’s important to find something that makes you feel good about the day because if you’re in a constant state of agitation about our political situation, it is really going to shorten your life,” she said. The Clintons spoke during a panel discussion with journalist Laura Ling, who the former president helped free in 2009 when she was detained in North Korea with another journalist. The event was held as part of a weekend of activities marking the of the Clinton Presidential Library’s opening in Little Rock. The library is preparing to of its exhibits and an expansion that will include Hillary Clinton’s personal archives. Hillary Clinton said part of the goal is to modernize the facility and expand it to make it a more open, inviting place for people for convene and make connections. When asked about advice he would give for people disappointed by the election results, Bill Clinton said people need to continue working toward bringing people together and improving others’ lives. “If that’s the way you keep score, then you ought to be trying to run up the score,” he said. “Not lamenting the fact that somebody else is winning a different game because they keep score a different way.” “And in addition, figure out what we can do to win again,” Hillary Clinton added, eliciting cheers. The program featured a panel discussion with cast members of the hit NBC show “The West Wing” and former Clinton White House staffers. The weekend amounted to a reunion of former Clinton White House staffers, supporters and close friends, including former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and adviser James Carville. McAuliffe said he and Carville ate Friday at Doe’s Eat Place, a downtown restaurant that was popular with Clinton aides and reporters during Clinton’s 1992 White House run. He said he viewed the library and its planned expansion as important for the future. “This is not only about the past, but it’s more importantly about the future,” McAuliffe said. “We just went through a very tough election, and people are all saying we’ve got to get back to the Clinton model.”

LeBron James at 40: A milestone birthday arrives Monday for the NBA's all-time scoring leader When LeBron James broke another NBA record earlier this month, the one for most regular-season minutes played in a career, his Los Angeles Lakers teammates handled the moment in typical locker room fashion. They made fun of him. Dubbed The Kid from Akron, with a limitless future, James is now the 40-year-old from Los Angeles with wisps of gray in his beard, his milestone birthday coming Monday, one that will make him the first player in NBA history to play in his teens, 20s, 30s and 40s. He has stood and excelled in the spotlight his entire career. Rising Sun Devils: Arizona State looks to pull off another big surprise at the Peach Bowl ATLANTA (AP) — As they prepare for Arizona State’s biggest game in nearly three decades, the guys who made it happen aren’t the least bit surprised to be rated a nearly two-touchdown underdog in the College Football Playoff. That’s a familiar position for the Sun Devils. They've been an underdog most of the season. Of the eight teams still vying for a national championship, there’s no bigger surprise than 11-2 Arizona State. The Sun Devils went 3-9 a year ago and were picked to finish dead last in their first season in the Big 12 Conference. Now, they're getting ready to face Texas in the Peach Bowl quarterfinal game on New Year’s Day. Penn State coach James Franklin says Nick Saban should be college football's commissioner SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Penn State coach James Franklin believes college football needs a commissioner and he even has a candidate in mind: former Alabama coach Nick Saban. Franklin made the suggestion Sunday at Penn State’s College Football Playoff quarterfinals media day ahead of the Fiesta Bowl. The sixth-seeded Nittany Lions are preparing for their game against No. 3 seed Boise State on Tuesday. The veteran coach was responding to a question about Penn State’s backup quarterback situation after Beau Pribula transferred to Missouri before the playoff. Pribula’s decision highlighted some of the frustrating aspects of a new college football world in the Name, Image and Likeness era and the transfer portal, forcing players to make tough decisions at inopportune times. Penn State's polarizing QB Drew Allar puts critics on mute and keeps winning games SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Even when Penn State quarterback Drew Allar gets some praise, it’s usually a backhanded compliment. They say he’s a good game manager and stays within himself, or that he doesn’t try to do too much. They mention he might not be flashy, but he gives the team a chance to win. And here’s the thing about Penn State since Allar stepped under center: The Nittany Lions have won games. A lot of them. Sometimes that’s hard to remember considering the lukewarm reception he often gets from fans. The polarizing Allar has another chance to quiet his critics on Tuesday, when Penn State plays Boise State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals at the Fiesta Bowl. Crosby breaks Lemieux's Penguins career assists record in 3-2 victory over the Islanders PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sidney Crosby broke Mario Lemieux’s Pittsburgh franchise career record for assists on Michael Bunting’s power-play goal and the Penguins beat the New York Islanders 3-2 on Sunday night. Crosby has 1,034 assists, good for 12th in NHL history. Only three players — Ray Bourque, Wayne Gretzky and Steve Yzerman — have more assists with a single team. The 37-year-old Crosby has played 1,310-regular-season games. Lemieux played 915. Evgeni Malkin added the deciding power-play goal in the third for Pittsburgh, which has 14 goals with the man advantage in its last 13 games. Anthony Beauvillier also scored to help the Penguins win for the seventh time in their last eight home games. Alex Nedeljkovic made 29 saves in his first start since Dec. 17.
The connections are clear between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers, longtime NFC South rivals. The teams get together for a meeting on Sunday in Charlotte and showed recent signs they can play with any team. "It's an NFC South battle," Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles said. "All of them are going to be hard, none of them (are) going to be easy. ... They're playing pretty good football. They missed some games here and there, but they're playing very good football. It's going to be a tough battle." Few introductions are needed on Sunday, as first-year Panthers coach Dave Canales came to Carolina after serving as Buccaneers offensive coordinator a season ago. Canales' prized pupil last season, Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield was with the Panthers for part of the 2022 campaign. "There's some familiarity," Canales said of his connection to the Buccaneers. "Knowing coach Bowles, he's got a really sophisticated system and he attacks each team with a specific game plan. There's some principles that carry over. I know that he's going to have some things up his sleeve." The Buccaneers (5-6) playing a division opponent for the first time since an Oct. 27 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The goal will be notching back-to-back wins for the first time since the first two weeks of the season. Four different ball-carriers, including Mayfield, found the end zone on the ground during a 30-7 drubbing of the New York Giants last Sunday. Mayfield also completed 24 of 30 passes for 294 yards. "For me, the biggest thing was blocking and tackling," Bowles said of what his team did well last weekend. "We cleaned up the fundamental and technique part of it." Star wideout Mike Evans was back in action for Tampa Bay following a three-game absence due to a hamstring injury. He finished with five receptions for 68 yards against the Giants and now gets a crack at a Carolina team allowing a league-high 30.9 points per game this season. However, the Panthers have tightened up their play as of late, winning two games in a row before hanging with the two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs in a 30-27 setback last Sunday. The outing against Kansas City may have been the most efficient performance of Panthers quarterback Bryce Young's two-year career. Young completed 21 of 35 passes for 263 yards and one score without throwing a pick. "It's not all Bryce, it's the whole unit," Canales said. "It's a collective effort, but he certainly needs to be the voice and driver of that." Wide receiver Jalen Coker (quadriceps), tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders (neck) and safety Lonnie Johnson (personal) were all missing from practice on Wednesday for Carolina. Defensive end LaBryan Ray is dealing with a hand issue and was among those limited. Safety Jordan Whitehead (pectoral) was one of four Buccaneers to miss practice on Wednesday. Evans practiced in full. Carolina and Tampa Bay might as well get used to each other, as the two teams will collide again in Week 17. --Field Level Media
Superannuation is one of the most important financial tools for securing your , but how does your balance stack up against the average for Australians in your age group? Understanding where you stand can provide valuable insight into whether you're on track for the lifestyle you envision in retirement—whether that's a comfortable retirement with plenty of financial freedom or a more modest lifestyle covering the basics. Different retirement lifestyles Firstly, let's look at what a comfortable and modest lifestyle in retirement means according to Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia ( ). It is the peak policy, research and advocacy body for Australia's superannuation industry. ASFA describes a comfortable retirement as follows: The comfortable retirement standard allows retirees to maintain a good standard of living in their post work years. It accounts for daily essentials, such as groceries, transport and home repairs, as well as private health insurance, a range of exercise and leisure activities and the occasional restaurant meal. Importantly it enables retirees to remain connected to family and friends virtually – through technology, and in person with an annual domestic trip and an international trip once every seven years. Whereas a modest retirement strips back on things like international trips and leisure activities. It is described as: The modest retirement standard budgets for a retirement lifestyle that is slightly above the Age Pension and allows retirees to afford basic health insurance and infrequent exercise, leisure and social activities with family and friends. What do you need? Based on the assumption that the retirees own their own home outright and are relatively healthy, a comfortable retirement currently requires the following superannuation at 67: For a modest retirement, significantly less is required: How do you compare? That's how much you need, but how much superannuation do Australians actually have? Here's the most recent data according to QSuper: Do you have enough to retire comfortably? This is a difficult question to answer because everybody is different. But you can use a calculator like to plug in your numbers and find out whether or not you are on track to retire comfortably. If you are on track, that's great! If not, don't be too disheartened. Making extra superannuation contributions could help you get to target by the time you retire. But it is worth remembering that the comfortable retirement figures are for today. Due to inflation, someone that is now in their 20s will likely require significantly more when they reach retirement age compared with someone that is about to retire. So, always aim for more superannuation than you think you will need. It's certainly better to have too much than too little. In the latest episode of Safe Mode, Greg Otto talks with Emily Crose about her new book “Hack to The Future: How World Governments Relentlessly Pursue and Domesticate Hackers.” Emily explains how the US government managed to weaponize a subculture widely seen as misanthropic and awkward into a lever of power that now has far-reaching geopolitical implications In our reporter chat, Greg Otto talks with Tim Starks about the continued investigation and fallout of the Salt Typhoon hacks. At the 2021 Holyrood election, Reform UK was a political footnote. They were outperformed by the likes of the Scottish Family Party, the (fake) Independent Green Voice, and even the Abolish the Scottish Parliament Party. Their share of the vote? A pitiful 0.21%. However, in July, the party pulled in 167,979 votes in Scotland — 7% of the total. Polls suggest that in months since their support has doubled to around 14%. It’s a staggering turnaround for a party that, not long ago, looked destined for obscurity. The credit is partly down to Nigel Farage’s return to frontline politics. A polarising figure, the Brexiteer has a knack for winning over disenchanted Tories, but Reform’s recent success shows they’re also peeling away votes from disillusioned Labour supporters and even some Lib Dems. READ MORE Reform UK membership jumps 10% in Scotland Russell Findlay: Reform vote in Scotland 'too high for my liking' Nigel Farage's Reform will back Anas Sarwar to be next First Minister Record attendance at Reform conference but Nigel Farage stays away Their election campaign was chaotic — a fact they’d likely admit. Candidate vetting was almost nonexistent, with one hopeful suspended for making pro-cannibalism comments and suggesting humanity should be “obliterated.” While they fielded a candidate in every Westminster seat in Scotland, many were paper candidates from England who never set foot north of the border. Yet in England, Reform won five seats and finished second in 98 constituencies. With this success has come a shift toward professionalisation under their new chairman, Zia Yusuf. Born in Bellshill to Sri Lankan immigrants, Yusuf studied at the LSE, worked at Goldman Sachs, and made a fortune founding a luxury concierge service. Now, he’s steering Reform toward next year’s local elections in England and, crucially, the 2026 Holyrood vote. Under Holyrood’s Additional Member System (AMS), any party winning around 5–6% of the vote can pick up seats. For Reform, that could mean 13 or 14 MSPs if their polling holds over the next 16 months. While they may not be policy heavy, they could cause chaos for some of the other parties. “Reform is primarily picking up support amongst Unionist voters,” Professor Sir John Curtice told BBC Scotland’s Sunday Show. “But the rise of Reform creates a problem for Unionists north of the border: it fragments an already divided Unionist vote even further.” Reform's first test might come sooner than 2026, with a likely council by-election in Glasgow North East — the second in the ward in just a few months. The vacancy was triggered after Labour’s Mary McNab, elected in October, was disqualified for failing to resign from her council job in time. Reform’s candidate last time, a local barber, came third in that election, where just 12% of voters turned out. The party is growing fast. A Reform insider recently told The Herald they now had 5,844 members in Scotland — a remarkable number given they scraped together just 5,793 votes at the last Holryood election.
